Another Unique NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert: Natalie Prass

Feb. 25, 2019 | Joshua Bote — Full disclosure: We here at NPR Music have decreed Natalie Prass something of a patron saint for roséwave — our groove-laden, pink drink-soaked soundtrack for the summer. So, when the Richmond, Va. artist arrived at the Tiny Desk, it was a cause for celebration, especially amid the January blues that seemed to permeate the NPR Music office. Decked out in matching, cobalt blue outfits (with a matching keyboard stand to boot), Prass and her backing band, comprised of Eric Slick, Alan Parker, Jacob Ungerleider and Brandon Lane, seemed to bring a warm breeze in with them.

There’s a sly political bent to Prass’ 2018 album, The Future and the Past. Ahead of its release, she said she actually had a different album nearly finished, but scrapped a huge chunk of it after Donald Trump’s election, which in turn led her to make this album instead. She highlights this mission statement on the album opener — and first song she performed at the desk — “Oh My.” It’s a track that speaks pointedly about the abject feeling of horror and exhaustion that seeps in when you tune into the news cycle, with bleak lyrics set against bright, dance-y music.

For the unabashedly delightful “Short Court Style,” Prass brings on Angelica Garcia and Kenneka Cook, two backup singers who, like Prass, are from Richmond. It’s a rare kind of song that celebrates hard-won love in all its intricacies.

Before closing with “Hot for the Mountain,” Prass tells the NPR office that “the song’s a little off the beaten path, but, I don’t know, it’s my favorite.” “We’ll take you on / We can take you on,” Prass, Garcia and Cook sing in unison, a refrain that resounds emphatically. Her vision was clear: If you want to overcome the times, find strength in numbers.

Our local Fox affiliate is now showing Hannity at 9:00 on the channel. They aren’t even trying to show any level of balance. It’s now just pure propaganda on the local level.

It also shows a certain level of desperation.

A friend who supported Bernie in the primaries last time, voted for Hillary in the general, and hates Trump as much as any lizard believes the American public are idiots who will re-elect Trump unless he is forced to depart early. The friend is also a firm believer that the Democrats will find a way to self-destruct because there are too many contenders — but his primary qualifications for a Democratic nominee are (1) someone younger than 60 and (2) someone devoted to the environment. And let’s just say he has lost all his original enthusiasm for Bernie.

Incredibly doubtful there will be enough votes in either chamber to override the veto, but this is still important because it provides the House lawsuit with some incredibly powerful ammunition. Both the House and Senate will have voted to override a non-emergency emergency declaration that Trump has openly admitted he didn’t have to do and did solely to usurp Congress’ Article One appropriations authority to himself. The Courts will almost certainly view that prima facie evidence that Trump has committed a serious unconstitutional abuse of power. I very much doubt that Roberts (and possibly even Alito, Gorsuch and Kavanaugh given their remaining time on the bench) will just want to hand future Democratic Presidents that kind of absurd precedent. Also, remember that the President’s ability to veto a Congressional override of a Presidential emergency declaration was itself was a consequence of a SCOTUS ruling in INS v Chadha, and that the original legislation ended the emergency when just the House had overridden the order. The Act was amended in 1985 so that a joint resolution was required to end the emergency and that made the President’s veto possible apparently because joint resolutions must be signed to go into effect.

Sinclair owns a bunch of local affiliates of various networks around the country.

Sinclair leaves the Austin CBS affiliate pretty much alone. It’s either #1 or #2 in the local news during prime time. Telemundo is the #1 Hispanic station in town, Univision a distant second. They also leave them alone. They broadcast live English Premier League games on Telemundo, often when NBC has them on NBCS1 on cable so that non-cable watchers (and there a bunch of us, I’ve got at least 30 HD on-air channels) can see them. GOOOOOOOOOOAL!

Like I said, Sinclair may be bastards, but they leave channels alone when they are making good money.

Hannity is now being broadcast on the local, FOX owned station. Trumpaganda.

The whole thing is really fucking weird to me because the President’s authority to declare an emergency still only exists because of a law passed by Congress granting him that power. So why shouldn’t they have been able to preemptively set up a check on that power in the law itself via a simple majority vote? I can understand why SCOTUS didn’t think the one House vote was enough, but if the House and Senate both say no by simple majority votes that should be the end of the story.

Well, like I said, Austin is a very blue pimple in a very red Texas (at least outside of the metros and the Rio Grand Valley) but Channel 7 (the Fox affiliate) is last in almost everything from news to content. They are losing money hand over foot, and I think they have decided to bring Hannity in at the 9:00 slot to try to grab eyeballs and lead in to the 10:00 news.

They are trying to pull another 9/11 - claiming everything was fine with the air quality, and it turns out that thousands around the NYC metro area were exposed to toxic chemicals - believing the lie from the EPA and authorities that the air was safe to breath. It wasn’t.

The GOP again reveals itself to be awful, evil, and craven.

These burdens fall on those least able to endure them - poor and minorities (who are often those living closest to chemical / petrochemical facilities and bear the brunt of environmental damage).

They are trying to pull another 9/11 - claiming everything was fine with the air quality, and it turns out that thousands around the NYC metro area were exposed to toxic chemicals - believing the lie from the EPA and authorities that the air was safe to breath. It wasn’t.

The GOP again reveals itself to be awful, evil, and craven.

These burdens fall on those least able to endure them - poor and minorities (who are often those living closest to chemical / petrochemical facilities and bear the brunt of environmental damage).

The whole thing still comes off as an excuse to give in to the double standard. It’s about pushing the discussion away from ‘Dems behaving badly’ to ‘don’t condone any bad behavior’. Because throwing your hands up about GOP voters not caring about their bad behavior basically means that only Dem bad behavior ‘deserves’ to be the story, and it gives in to the idea that the media must follow the whims of the GOP voter, rather than all voters, therefore holding GOPers accountable doesn’t matter.

It’s cynicism masked as pragmatism.

Before 9/11 I had run through the California DTSC / EPA / CEQUA thing for the shop I work for.
It was patently obvious to anyone that had experience with regulated air quality that NYC was a hazardous atmosphere everywhere around the site and downwind. The kind of air quality that calls for positive pressure headgear, because the right respirator mask would be too hard to breathe through for days on end. They really don’t, outside of what you mentioned - getting airplay for their artists. You could tell that they were in bad straits when they started doing what are called ‘360 deals’ - where the labels started making deals with artists that would trade tour support for a percentage of an artist’s merchandising revenues (which are most bands’ bread and butter on the road).

A friend who had a pretty successful music career in the MTV heyday has a theory that the music business pretty much died in the wake of 9/11. It was at that point that they stopped signing a lot of acts, and cut support for the artists they already had signed way back. I was in a band that was looking for a deal in 2001, and we got pretty close - but then the towers fell and the record labels went pretty much silent. And with the advent of streaming, they never really recovered.

Radio and TV are still the easiest means to get your name out, and the record labels are the best way to get there. If I wasn’t here, there are dozens of musicians I would have never heard about.

Rand Paul seems to think there will be at least 10 Republicans voting in favor of the emergency declaration termination bill:

“I think there will be 10 Republican ‘no’ votes. Possibly more,” Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul said Monday. “If (you) look at the history of not only our government, but other governments around the world, governments that begin to be run by emergencies, really bad things can happen.”

I find this a very interesting aspect of the National Emergencies Act procedures. And I wonder how we can fix this from abuse in the future.

One thought that has occurred to me is to add a provision that says when the president declares a national emergency, it must be approved by Congress within a set number of days (maybe 14 if they’re in session or within 7 days upon returning from recess) - something similar to fast track authority, where the president can negotiate a trade deal and rather than requiring 2/3 Senate approval, it just needs simple majorities in both Houses.

300 polled, 100 identify as GOP, 80% approved (meaning 80 people of 300 were supporting Trump.
New poll: 300 polled, 50 polled identify as GOP, 90% approved (meaning 45 of 300 supported Trump).

Smaller pool of more committed extremists. This is the trend we’re seeing with the GOP. They’re more extreme/radicalized, and more committed to Trump. But it’s a smaller group.

But between being able to edit and mix a record on a lap top, and then release it on the iTunes, Google, and Amazon stores as digital, and being able to market on instagram, snapchat, and all the other social media platforms, I just wonder what the advantage of a “record deal” is today beyond getting on traditional radio (apparently it’s fairly easy to get on pandora and spotify now too).

Getting the opening slot on a major artist’s tour, or fill-in slots at major festivals. Making the best videos are expensive — how much value did Gary Clark Jr or Donald Glover’s most recent videos add to the songs? Beyonce’s records aren’t bad, but it’s the video production and staging her live shows that makes her a top artist. The label’s marketing department has ties to ad agencies and TV/movie producers to sell the songs to outlets that pay a lot. Getting reviewed in high-circulation magazines.

Until the 1950’s, musicians made most of their money from ticket sales. From the 1960’s through 1990’s their income was mostly record sales. Record sales and downloads are the least of their income for most musicians today — it’s either live performances, or sync licenses on TV/film/commercials.

I think a decent amount of the support for him is a form of “well, the economy hasn’t tanked (yet).” Presidents always get too much credit and too much blame for the state of the economy. In Trump’s case, it’s probably giving him an extra 15-20% support that he wouldn’t have if we saw something like the mortgage crisis, or significant upticks in inflation and/or unemployment. And we’ve basically been redlining the economy for a couple of years, so, um, yeah…

She is clearly informed, she’s clearly given this a lot of thought, and what she’s saying is both accurate and something that needs to be heard. And you’ll notice that she references consulting with Secretary Albright! It is at the 45:30 mark that she lays down her first marker by stating that “you may want to see me as a Somali-American, but I am a member of Congress”. This establishes the foundation for her later remarks about allegiance. Omar’s remarks that have caused so much sturm and drang begin at 59:26 and follow Congresswoman Tlaib’s remarks for thanking Jewish allies for standing up and being supportive of both the broad call for human rights and the specific one regarding doing something to improve the current existence of the Palestinians. I recommend that everyone who has not actually watched the video to take a moment and watch at least Congresswoman Omar’s remarks that begin at 59:26 if not both of her extended remarks. She didn’t say anything anti-Semitic. In fact she goes out of her way to contextualize her remarks so that they aren’t. You’ll also notice that her colleagues Congresswoman Jayapal and Congressman Pocan aren’t reacting negatively in real time to her remarks. Congresswoman Omar also made it clear in her remarks that she was anticipating the response that she has received.

Note that “Pittsburg” was spelled without its “h” at that time. (The “h” came and went in official usage.)

I figured that, as a native of the ‘burg(h)’, you would pick up on that. Iirc, officially, the ‘h’ was added in 1911. But the spelling argument continued into the 1920’s.

Sounds like the pawnshop was in the lower Northside. Interestingly, I think that it was actually in the City of Allegheny, which wasn’t annexed into Pittsburg(h) until 1907.

Edit - Correction - The boardinghouse was on Fulton Street in Manchester District/Lower North Side/Old Allegheny City. The pawnshop was in Wilkensburg.
