BTW, in case it hasn’t been noted here, the Sri Lankan government has (they say) figured out who was responsible for the Easter bombings:
(via BBC)
The government has blamed a little-known local jihadist group, National Thowheed Jamath, although no-one has yet admitted carrying out the bombings.
Not to be unduly cynical or anything, but ISTM that they’ve simply decided to pin the blame on some local jihadis regardless of evidence, but we shall see (we hope)….

Could get really ugly against Muslims.
Some interesting numbers in this Harvard Institute of Politics poll of 18-29 year olds. This in particular jumped out:
Trump approval/disapproval: 29/68 (all)
Pelosi approval/disapproval: 36/61 (all); 42/57 (likely voters)
Congressional Democrats approval/disapproval: 47/51 (all); 53/46 (likely voters
Congressional Republican approval/disapproval: 29/68 (all)
Trump and the Republicans numbers are basically the same across the board.
When asked about the Democratic primary, Bernie leads with 29% across the board, Biden is second at 18% for all and 21% for likely. I suspect this mostly has to do with name recognition, still. Hopefully it changes.

And Trump’s quick to jump on the response bandwagon, offering assistance, all while he was silent about the arson attacks targeting black churches here in the US.
It’s only important to Trump when the victims and perps are the right sort of people. Then he lets his racist and xenophobic and Islamophobic freak flag fly.

re: #7 gocart mozart
That whole “slap in the face” argument is just so damn stupid. One of the things I hate most about my generation (Boomers) is how many of us simply assume that the world that young people face today is the same one that they entered as young adults, where a college degree got you a good job in your field that provided healthcare, and that if you went to a state school in your own state it was practically free, and that you could ‘work your way through school’.
Christ, today you could come out the other end of 4 years in a state school in California with $80,000 in debt!

Why Can’t the Military Root Out Far-Right Extremism in It’s Own Ranks?
Unable to fall asleep this afternoon, I was surfing a bit and found the latest Tiny Desk Concert. A bit different this time - a String Quartet performing 3 movements from a modern composer, Caroline Shaw, then from Leoš Janáček, and lastly from Beethoven. Pity they didn’t reach all the way back to Haydn but this is still a delight.
I still cannot believe that, after electing the oldest person ever elected to the Presidency*, that the leading challengers to that old dude are two EVEN OLDER guys.
“It’s time for new leadership! Who are the oldest guys we can find whom we expect to still be alive for inauguration?”

Why Can’t the Military Root Out Far-Right Extremism in It’s Own Ranks?
Fascinating yet frustrating read.
Mueller:
Trump is unstable and prone to telling people to commit crimes.
Trump keeps telling everyone to commit crimes.
We have incomplete picture, but several key advisers refused to commit said crimes.
Trump:
I’m exonerated.
Mueller:
Nope. You’re not.
Trump:
I didn’t do anything wrong.
Mueller:
Yeah, you did plenty wrong, even if it can’t be for criminal indictment because existing DOJ policy prohibits indicting a sitting president.
Trump:
I’m a sitting president and am exonerated in Mueller’s report, which was a total witch hunt.
Mueller:
That’s … not what I said. I said the opposite. If you weren’t in the WH, you could be indicted.
Trump:
See, this is a witch hunt.
GOP:
It’s a … witch hunt but we’re concerned.
Trumpworld:
We’re concerned - about our post Trump future employment, because we were refusing to take orders from the guy who now controls the nuclear football because he told us to engage in crimes, and we mostly refused.
Us:
This fucker knows he’s fucked, but is determined to destroy the nation to save himself. The GOP will protect Trump to save themselves, instead of saving the nation. Party above nation. Trump is too unhinged and devoted to protecting himself, and too willing to commit crimes to stay in power to care about the rule of law or law enforcement. He broke the law repeatedly, and impeachment is the only way to get a full accounting, since Mueller found Russia repeatedly threw its weight to back Trump, undermine Hillary, and supported Bernie for good measure. Trump didn’t care where his support was coming from, and didn’t care that he was skirting the law. He was too busy grabbing it by the genitals and trying to get away with it.
His response to Mueller being named was genuine - he knew he was fucked. Now he’s still in coverup mode (same as it’s been since that day). The report doesn’t change the outcome. Increased oversight, investigations, and officially going into impeachment mode would.
There’s no one among the GOP that will put party over nation and tell Trump to step down for the good of the nation - that these crimes are too much. They’re too busy backing Trump, in the hopes they can ride out 2020. Trump is hoping for the same.
Democrats have to grow a spine here. Impeachment is the right thing to do - politically, legally, and for historical purposes. And the rationale is solid, the president committed high crimes. There are no misdemeanors here.
This is who Trump was, is, and forever will be. Everyone associated with Trump enabled Trump, lied for him, and then covered it up. Even when people like Hicks or Lewandowski didn’t follow Trump’s demands to break the law, they were revealing that Trump should not be in office. That’s the message Democrats need to be making - everyone knows Trump should not be in office, and there’s no excuses here.

I still cannot believe that, after electing the oldest person ever elected to the Presidency*, that the leading challengers to that old dude are two EVEN OLDER guys.
“It’s time for new leadership! Who are the oldest guys we can find whom we expect to still be alive for inauguration?”
I’m of two minds about this (maybe because I’m in that squishy 45-55 middle age - here’s betting that nobody born in the 1970s will ever get elected president and that we’ll get passed over just like the 1930s “silent generation”)
Anyway: the presidency is an almost impossible job even under normal circumstances. It will be completely impossible for ANYONE to check every single box that’s needed for whoever has to put the pieces together after Trump.
That person needs to have an immense amount of inspirational charisma to reach the voters who are more interested in personality than policy. That person will need a deep vein of legislative institutional experience to understand how to wrestle policy through a Congress that will still have a stubborn GOP rump, if not still a majority in at least one house. That person will need to have immense executive skills to reassemble all the things Trump broke behind the scenes across the executive branch. Plus skillful foreign policy mojo to bring the world back to us after four years of us telling the world to stick it. And a huge reserve of energy to get through all those tasks without becoming exhausted by it. Oh, and the ability to comfort the nation at times of trouble in the way most Presidents do well, and Trump just plain sucks at.
You can’t tick all those boxes and be 77 on inauguration day, but you also can’t tick all those boxes and be 39.
It’s no wonder the 18-29s don’t really know what they want. Nobody does. Maybe nobody CAN.

I still recall the military’s attempts to rid itself of sexual harassment in the 90’s…only because it was so bad that it was affecting recruitment
So they held a show trial, the fellow (Sergeant Major of the Army, the nighest ranking NCO) was acquitted on harassment charges but convicted on covering up evidence (in other words, he didn’t do it, but he lied about it) and given an honorable discharge and allowed to keep his pension and benefits.
Interesting that they did not want to pick on anyone too high up the chain of command to avoid the impression that it was accepted practice, nor did they want to pick on a mere ranker to avoid looking like they were going after the poor foot-sloggers.

Ya know, the lame-ass excuses and gunfuckers come up with continue to amaze me.
On FB, there was a post this morning about how we’re inflicting Active Shooter Drills on kids, which is pretty fucking traumatic. So, of course, the usual arguments show up - “It’s not the guns, it must be something cultural!”
So I say, ‘Maybe not the guns, but how many of them there are and how easily one can acquire a gun that can kill a lot of people really fast.’
So one guy says ‘the biggest mass shooting in America was done with a bolt action rifle and marksmanship!’, which isn’t true and hasn’t been since 1984. But let’s think about that - the Texas Tower killer needed practice and a perfect snipers perch to kill 17 people. Adam Lanza walked into a school and started pulling the trigger. So, nowadays you can kill A LOT MORE people with almost no training except swapping out magazines.
Some other guy quotes the ‘gun that can kill a lot of people really fast’ part and says, “You mean like a 50 year old 12 gauge pump shotgun with 00 buckshot?” Okay, mostly they hold maybe 5 shells, then you have to manually shove shells in one at a time. How long does that take? Plus, to the best of my knowledge no gun company is making and selling 50 year old shotguns.
These ‘arguments’ are so stupid, they reek of confirmation bias and desperation. These clowns are SO DESPERATE to keep the easy availability of all guns that they’ll accept any level of carnage as long as they can rationalize that it’s got nothing to do with guns.

It’s not my area of expertise by any stretch of the imagination, but I did hear some legal talking head on one of the cable news channels say that because of the complexities of the campaign finance laws, it is one of the few areas where ignorance of the law is actually a defense. Of course, the idea that “I didn’t know it was illegal to accept foreign contributions” is a pretty stupid defense because that seems like the sort of thing that anyone that close to a campaign would have learned on day one.

Because they’re critical to rebuilding a catholic Christendom in his warped mind. I get the impression that he’s of the school that Protestants are acceptable (ie canon fodder) till the heathens are gone then the inquisition will fix the rest. Impeachment being more a political process than a legal one is a two-edged sword. On the one hand, you really don’t need absolute evidence of violating the criminal code. On the other, even if you have it but can’t get 2/3 of the Senate to convict, you end up at a minimum wasting your time and possibly convincing a big chunk of the electorate that you’re just trying to undo an election you didn’t win.
Arguably, Bill Clinton should have resigned, because his impeachment was widely, and I think correctly, seen as a nakedly political attempt to undo the election of somebody the GOP really hated, the culmination of a years long smearfest by the Right. And the way it played out essentially poisoned Impeachment as a remedy for anything but maybe the President shooting an innocent person on live TV.

The lies and the subsequent coverup indicate that they knew what they were doing was wrong, which is why they were lying about their Russia contacts in such a way that it would go to motive and mens rea.
Why obstruct justice on the investigation if you didn’t do anything wrong. At some level, they knew what they were doing was wrong, so they obstructed justice, and put themselves in a worse position for it.
Oh, and the report found that Russia intended to interfere in our election in 2016, and they are still at it.

Also, doing a proper and as public as possible investigation prior to going to impeachment builds public support as well as incentivizes some members a certain party to choose country over party. Plus the balls-in-the-vise satisfaction as the investigation progresses.

I imagine Pelosi wants to dot the t’s if she’s going to pursue impeachment. Yeah stupid shit like that. It’s just a pathetic diversion tactic and I hated when it was used here when we talked guns. Thankfully no mas. I admit it. I don’t know guns. I do know enough that a lot of the weapons used in recent shootings were intended to fire rapidly and kill large amounts of people. I really do get why someone would want a handgun or a rifle for protection, recreational hunting, or getting pests but come the hell on with the AR-15 stuff. I don’t even mind people being able to shoot them on ranges as a means to blow off steam but I’m uncomfortable with people accumulating mini arsenals.

Lets have hearings first. It was the televised hearings of Watergate testimony that caused support for Nixon to crumble, leading to his actual ouster. The only way the Senate will convict is if support for Trump shows a precipitous slide so that they can make the political calculation that its worse for them to stand by him than to turn against him. Polling is already beginning to show increased disapproval of Trump.

He won’t be able to resist, things are getting hotter and hotter.
I wonder if McGhan has his digital recorder and mini cam ready to go? Someone like a Cory Lewandowski might just bump into him and ask some favors.
re: #153 ObserverArt
I’ve heard some Republicans say they don’t want to put the American people through another Clinton-like impeachment.
This after they put the American people through the Clinton impeachment.
In other words: we fucked it all up so now we cry about it because it’s all fucked up.
The great thing, that stance also protects Republicans. Win win!
IOW, the unsuccessful and largely frivolous impeachment of Clinton makes it MUCH more difficult to impeach a President who has done for more egregious shit, and when you combine the utter shamelessness of the Senate GOP caucus with their pants-wetting fear of Trump’s insane moron base, you have too high a wall to climb, especially if it might make it harder to defeat him in 19 months.

Oh, that’s like the “pastor” of the “church” I picketed yesterday who said Christianity got rid of slavery in every place the practice of Christianity was taken up. You bet I bloody hell mocked him. If the approach is, “we’re going to double check the report and follow up on a few loose ends” then I’m fine with that. But at this point, all roads must lead to impeachment. Anything else and there’s really no reason to vote for either party ever again.
Well, except the makeup of the federal courts.
re: #13 Blind Frog Belly White
That whole “slap in the face” argument is just so damn stupid. One of the things I hate most about my generation (Boomers) is how many of us simply assume that the world that young people face today is the same one that they entered as young adults, where a college degree got you a good job in your field that provided healthcare, and that if you went to a state school in your own state it was practically free, and that you could ‘work your way through school’.
Christ, today you could come out the other end of 4 years in a state school in California with $80,000 in debt!
I came out of college in 1977 and had a damn hard time finding any job let alone a good pay job. I didn’t find a yellow brick road of prosperity waiting.

And I hate to say it, but that’s the big difference between the Left and the Right. Even a fair number of the people on the Right who HATED Trump, and thought him an even worse candidate on the merits than the hated Hillary Clinton still came out and voted for him because of the Supreme Court and the Judiciary.
On the Left? We have a bunch of whiny babies who think the parties are the same because Bernie lost, and who in future years will wonder how it happened that gay people can’t marry anymore, and women can’t get abortions, but you can buy a goddam bazooka at the sporting goods store.

I got suckered into paying $100 for turbo tax’s “free” software because the free plan didn’t include the student loan interest deduction form. Granted, the difference between claiming and not claim that was well over $100 between state and federal, but it was rather annoying.
As usual, I filled out my tax forms manually, printed them out, and sent them in. (Well, last year I went to a professional tax preparer because my taxes had got complicated, and I needed an example on how to do some new forms.) I have an excel spreadsheet to do the calculations, and I fill in the numbers and copy them onto the forms. No charge….

If we want an impeachment then we have to support the Democrats as best we can. If you have a Republican Senator in your state, bomb him with messages asking for impeachment, etc.
Tell the Democrats to stay on it, you want a full investigation and an impeachment.
And remember, Mitch McConnell answers to all of us being Senate Majority Leader…so use his contact form at this link.
I have contacted Rob Portman (OH) of course, and Mitch too and will be doing it more.

The IRS should develop software that populates the information we have already provided them into your return so that many people could actually file for free. But of course corporate lobbyists for the tax return companies have it blocked.
This is why I input all my data into at least two different “FREE” tax preparers each season.
Even though the IRS “FREE” filer finder program told me I didn’t qualify to use Turbo Tax, I completed their free program short of filing, to back-check Tax Act’s final outcome. Seeing both outcomes matched, I filed for free with Tax Act (which I still qualified to use) and have already recieved my rebate.

Here is why a lot of venezolanxs are using bitcoin, dash and other cryptocurrencies for even everyday shopping. The government is trying (naturally) to quash such a shadow economy by requiring exorbitant fees to convert cryptocurrencies into national currency, so instead people are just keeping their money in crypto and not bothering with the bolivar at all. There are enough venezolanxs with friends and family abroad to obtain funds by way of cryptocurrencies, and then they can use apps on their phones to spend those funds at participating vendors.
It’s not widespread, of course. Not every citizen has a computer or smartphone, and I gather this crypto-economy is limited to the major cities.

It’s funny to hear Seth Moulton talk about how when he goes to primary states nobody cares he challenged Pelosi, because I’d argue when he was here two weeks ago that’s largely why no one cared about anything he had to say. #maddow

The Rude Pundit says Trump is a Whiny Little Bitch Who Wants to Prosecute Hillary Clinton. End result: he thinks that is as much of an abuse of power as you can find.
I have sent emails to my Congresscritter and both Senators telling them that impeachment inquiries need to be opened now, whether the Senate will take the matter up or not. Keep up the pressure.
(Oh, and something that’s been bugging me for days: we haven’t seen the Mueller report yet, what we’ve seen is the Barr Redaction. Which is damning enough, but who knows what the unexpurgated version will look like?)

Hope the White House is current on their cable TV bill.
Sitting in the hospital with my mom, after a rocky Easter weekend. Pneumonia is scary in a 94-year-old. Hope things go well for the Lizardim, will be following threads as hospital wi-fi permits but mostly signed out.
Hope things don’t well for our un-beloved Prez and his enablers, may they all have stomachaches tonight…
Both Nancy LeTourneau and Martin Longman are starting the push towards impeachment. Longman, particularly, is rather conservative, so I am surprised by the growing public push.
re: #315 CleverToad
My 71-year-old mother had to do a round with pneumonia this winter, it was brutal. The coughing fits I saw her go through scared me. All my best to your moms.
re: #315 CleverToad
Wishing you and your mother the best of progress…
Yeah! Following @ewarren’s lead! This is the right thing to do. Hell yeah, @KamalaHarris! https://t.co/1GZJ1VwzTF

I am not looking at my Instagram feed for a while.

This is why I could never be a political professional. I’d never be able to hide my contempt for these idiots in the middle.
It’s why I don’t canvas; I’d probably come down harder on the chickenshit “undecideds” than the dedicated Republicans. And I can barely hide my contempt for Republicans anymore.
re: #319 teleskiguy
well, considering that Mueller’s report laid out ten separate instances of Obstruction, my guess is that would be a good place to start.
If they happen to include the instances of perjury that coincided with that, that’s also fine.
If we also need to indict Barr for his misrepresentation of the Report, I would be okay with that too.
Off-topic: there’s a FB group called Old Images of Philadelphia that I’m a member of. It’s got tons of great, old photos of Philly and the surrounding area.
But, boy-howdy, do the fucking racists come flooding out whenever they feature something even tangentially related to people of color.
Regardless, I’m probably going to get banned from it any second now. They just posted a poster from the Million Woman March in ‘97, and I pointed out how many racists are flooding the comments due to the subject matter. I’m sure they’ll shitcan me before the angry white people.

Women leading the way again.
One of the most important ideas espoused by the late Christopher Hitchens is the idea that all humans benefit from the empowerment of women.

I think Nancy is playing the impeachment thing very well. Look at what’s happening: she stays firm (with caveats) that they aren’t talking impeachment. Nope. It’s driving folks outa the woodwork now to scream “Impeach!” More very day. The more she holds off, the more come out. Keep investigating hard but hold off on impeachment until she is righteously “begged” to do it and the public sentiment is behind it.
I want to see impeachment proceedings begin at the earliest in the late fall. Let it be televised and discussed over seriously lit holiday dinners. Let it be fresh and ongoing during campaigning before the Dem primaries where they can slam the GOP’s malfeasance over and over again. Make it impossible for Trump to successfully run again when it’s real damn late for the GOP to field a new candidate who has to run from behind in an impossible situation .
Dreaming is good huh.
I know this dynamic surprises no one at this point, but I will never get used to this — this is a rotten, rotten core.

I’m thinking that continued action on impeachment will make the short-fingered vulgarian clutch his phone even harder as he pushes out Gollum-like tweets.
I now have an idea of how diatonic chord progressions work, thanks to the bass lessons I’m taking online. And to hear the guy describe things, a good bass player really needs to be as good at music theory as being able to move around the bass.

If you’re on DK, like my diary just to try to get a discussion of Warren in the rec list. She’s not even my favorite, though I’m definitely liking her more, but there are too many Bernie diaries in the rec list, including one congratulating him on being the only candidate to vote against going into Iraq. Considering that most of the candidates weren’t eligible, it’s really not a useful comparison.

If the security clearance guy is a former employee, how does the White House have any say at all on whether he appears or not?

Attorneys for Carl Kline, who was in charge of security clearances for the first 2 years of Trump’s presidency, say he will defy the subpoena.
This raises the prospect that Congress could hold Kline in contempt, a step that Chairman Elijah Cummings warned Monday he would take. https://t.co/hEiFuTSyCm— Caroline Orr (@RVAwonk) April 23, 2019
