In Which Donald Trump Praises the US Military for “Taking Over the Airports” … In the War of 1812

Politics • Views: 29,093

I thought I heard him say this, but I was trying to do something much more important, and was only half-listening at the time.

So I asked around on Twitter and yeah, he really said it. Who knows if he misread a word, or if that was actually on the teleprompter, or if he was going off script into lala land as he is wont to do, but he said it.

It’s another of those moments that reveals how deeply ignorant and unprepared Trump is for the office he’s squatting in.

UPDATE at 7/5/19 12:06:12 pm by Charles Johnson

Apparently Donald Trump needs a teleprompter to let him know there were no airports in the 19th century.

Donald Trump got more popular votes than any other Republican in history.

This is something that is sort of missed in claiming that Hillary won the popular vote.

Of course she did, but that overlooks how popular Trump was too.

Yes, this ought to bother you: tens of millions of your fellow Americans are quite fine with Trump.

Yes, there are some people who voted for Trump and now have buyer’s remorse.

But that does not mean there are not millions of your fellow Americans who are quite willing and even hoping that Trump will implement his vile vision for this nation.

Tens of millions of Americans support him. They routinely mock us: on FB, one commented to me “And if most Democrats are as clueless as you, the re-election will be a landslide”. He may have been especially irritated at my assertion that Trump supporters wanted to return to the halcyon days of the 1950s when women and minorities knew their place.

I showed up to Arapahoe Basin at 5:45 this morning, there were already hundreds of people there. Still got a killer parking spot. Took a nap in my car until 7:30, when I got some breakfast. Holy moly, $9 gets you a huge breakfast on the 4th of July at Arapahoe Basin. Bunch of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits and gravy, home fries, all smothered in green chili. Washed that down with a Coors. Hey, YOLO.

It got *really* crowded. All the parking lots were full before the lifts opened, a lot of people parked on Highway 6 and hoofed it to the base area, sometimes up to over a mile. Eek!

Well, being the experienced ski bloke that I am (early bird catches the worm!) I was able to ski two runs up top and then one more run top to bottom before retiring to the party in the parking lot at about noon. And, it was a party. Fire dancers and hula hoops and costumes and barbecues and live music and lots of red white and blue. Delightful!

1. Deliberate voter suppression in certain states. People who were registered couldn’t vote because they didn’t have the right id or because their names were purged from voter lists.
2. People who bought into the lies about Hillary; lies that were fostered by the MSM that focused on “her emails”. One acquaintance voted for Trump because of Comey — she said that Comey reminded her of the Bill Clinton-Monica scandal — and she wasn’t interested in his return to the WH. Since we are in Illinois, her vote didn’t matter but it certainly affected voters in other states.

I despise it.

There are three explicit days set aside for the military.

Memorial Day, to honour those who died in the service of their country.
Veterans Day, to honour those who served the country (not a holiday except for the VA)
Armed Forces Day, to honor those currently serving (not a holiday)

Every other patriotic holiday is to remember Americans or America, not the military or veterans. Co-opting those holidays by conservatives to claim they care about military personnel or veterans or militarise the holidays burns my butt.

It actually appears no one is paying attention to his verbal flubs — only commenting on how he adhered to the script. Phil Mudd of CNN was highly critical of the emphasis on the military instead of talking about the ideals from the Founding Fathers.

An acquaintance who is not a Trump fan — but also hostile to progressives — posted a FB meme mocking Ivanka —and one of his Trumpster friends commented: “She is a very successful individual, like all of his kids.” Every time I start feeling a little hope, it is immediately dashed by the reality of this most pernicious family and political party and the blind allegiance from their followers.

Except for those mocking him — the media is accepting the original teleprompter speech and ignoring his verbal missteps. And that’s all that most will hear or care about. Meanwhile, he and the GOP are destroying everything that made America “great”, though if you look at our history of genocide, slavery, environmental degradation, lack of compassion, maybe we deserve this.

re: #88 Hecuba’s daughter

An acquaintance who is not a Trump fan — but also hostile to progressives — posted a FB meme mocking Ivanka —and one of his Trumpster friends commented: “She is a very successful individual, like all of his kids.” Every time I start feeling a little hope, it is immediately dashed by the reality of this most pernicious family and political party and the blind allegiance from their followers.

That’s why I call conservatism a religion. At least as long as I’ve been alive, it has been.

It has a statement of faith: Conservatism cannot fail, it can only be failed. (Compare to “we all fall short of the glory of God.”)
It has saints: Ronald Reagan, Barry Goldwater, &c who are held up for their mythical greatness, not what they actually did.
It banishes apostates from its faith (RINOs)
It threatens to punish or kill heretics (liberals).
It believes in things which are patently false (liberals hate the military, liberals don’t own guns, &c)
It has a prelate (whoever is at the top of the GOP at the time—Compare to the Pope)

It pretty much hits Christopher Hitchens’s statement “religion poisons everything” (compare to Rick Wilson’s “Everything Trump touches, dies”).

re: #81 Belafon

We will have to see if all of this (the photo manipulation) is real or not:

[Embedded content]

I don’t know how dispositive that analysis is. ELA just measures the differences in jpeg compression between different parts of a photo. Just because one part shows up as having differing values does not, necessarily, mean they are from different sources- it can just mean that the compression algorithm was able to be applied more heavily to that part of the photo.

For instance, the pool, which has only minimal variations in color, light values and detail, would naturally be more aggressively compressed than areas where there is a variety of colors, light values and details, like the crowd. That’s just how jpeg compression works. The analysis only works if you compare *similar* areas of a photo and find suspicious results.

FotoForensics even notes in the tutorial: “Regions with uniform coloring, like a solid blue sky or a white wall, will likely have a lower ELA result (darker color) than high-contrast edges.”

For comparison, here’s a very real picture I grabbed at random that exhibits pretty similar results, (if the link works, :) :
Link

Don’t get me wrong- I’m totally willing to believe photoshopping a fake crowd is well within the realm of things the Trump camp would do with absolutely no shame. I’m just not sure this is evidence of that.

(Just to offer up my boneyfidies, since this is like the third or fourth post where I’ve sagely nodded on about digital photo topics, my original serious film-to-digital transition was when the canon EOS D30- with a glorious 3.1mp- was a deal at $800 open box, and I’ve used photoshop since ps3. And I have a background in print advertising, so, much to my shame, I know a thing or to about making things look better through fakery.)

Flash flood warnings just went up in the counties northeast and east of me. (The county to the east is only a few miles away.)

Several normally dry creeks in the Panhandle are under flood warnings.

We’re currently under a severe thunderstorm watch here.

The National Weather Service in North Platte has issued a

* Flash Flood Warning for…
Southwestern Cherry County in north central Nebraska…
Central Sheridan County in the Panhandle of Nebraska…

…THE FLASH FLOOD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 430 AM MDT FOR
SOUTH CENTRAL GARDEN AND WESTERN DEUEL COUNTIES…

At 157 AM MDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy
rain across the warned area. One to two inches of rain have fallen.
Flash flooding is expected to begin shortly.

I-80 and NE-92 are flooded in that area.

I Opted Out of Facial Recognition at the Airport—It Wasn’t Easy (goes to Wired)

I wonder how long until they put such devices on highways. Government keeps adding reasons why I won’t get on aeroplanes unless I have to.

The announcement came as we began to board. Last month, I was at Detroit’s Metro Airport for a connecting flight to Southeast Asia. I listened as a Delta Air Lines staff member informed passengers that the boarding process would use facial recognition instead of passport scanners.

Allie Funk is a research analyst for Freedom on the Net, Freedom House’s annual country-by-country assessment of internet freedom. She focuses on developments in the US and Asia.

As a privacy-conscious person, I was uncomfortable boarding this way. I also knew I could opt out. Presumably, most of my fellow fliers did not: I didn’t hear a single announcement alerting passengers how to avoid the face scanners.

An acquaintance made a mildly snarky remark on FB about Trump’s speech and one of his Trumpster friends responded with “Well, he didn’t visit all 57 states”. We are not going to win in 2020 by being critical of Trump’s inability to read; that is not an impeachable offense. When marching in the parade yesterday with my congressman, I asked him when they are going to impeach Trump — he is definitely one who does not seem enthusiastic about the prospect and responded that they are waiting for Mueller’s testimony.

July 4 is supposed to be about the ideas of our founding and not our military. But all tinpot dictators love them a military salute — and that’s who is ruling us now. We are heading toward banana republic status.

Tens of millions of Americans support him. They routinely mock us: on FB, one commented to me “And if most Democrats are as clueless as you, the re-election will be a landslide”. He may have been especially irritated at my assertion that Trump supporters wanted to return to the halcyon days of the 1950s when women and minorities knew their place.

i posted the meme where Lincoln’s statue flips off Melania and Donald, and had an ex-military guy post how he’d “read up” on Lincoln and thought Lincoln and Trump would “get along well together.” I pointed out that Lincoln would be appalled and disgusted by a routine philanderer and draft-dodger who spurns the constitution routinely, and how I was surprised an ex combat vet wouldn’t be concerned with the Stolen Valor involved in a draft-dodger saluting someone, especially the president, who does not receive salutes (at least isn’t supposed to) because he is not a military officer. Nor is he supposed to give them, though we’ve developed that sorry-assed habit of having him exchange salutes with the boys at the helicopter.

For the GOP it’s a reactionary and regressive approach to roll back progress over the past 100 years. They are the ones who want to strip civil and voting rights from minorities and women. They’re the ones who want to deny women agency over their own bodies.

They’re the ones who want to stop nonwhites from entering the US harkening back to the same language used to deny Jews entry to the US during the 1930s to 1940s.

What they showed was a narrow view of the reflecting pool itself, along with the space that is right around the pool. This is an expanded view from yesterday.

This is the landspace around the two monuments without any crowds.

Ordered Deported, Then Sent a $497,777 Fine From ICE (Goes to the New York Times)

Trump’s ICE is now going after undocumented immigrants who are being sheltered by churches.

The headline refers to a woman talking about being sheltered inside a Mennonite Church. There are several other people’s stories receiving these letters in the article.

Apparently ICE is calculating a fine of nearly $800 a day and sending it to people in such sanctuary, trying to intimidate both them and the churches in question.

A group who tracks such people for legal defence thinks there are about twenty such cases, and are organising a class action suit claiming this amounts to an excessive fine under the VIII Amendment.

ICE is trying to intimidate churches which do this to stop offering sanctuary. As of yet, ICE has not raided a church.

So far it seems few people outside the churches in question are aware the Republican administration is trying to strongarm churches into throwing such people on the street so they can collect them, though NPR did an article on this

Fugitives from ICE: A Family Finds Sancutary in a Pennsylvania Church (a United Methodist Church in this case, the article from March 7)

as did Voice of America:

More Undocumented Immigrants Are Living in US Sanctuary Churches (a Unitaritan-Universalist Church, possibly the first known person to do this, from January 29)

There is a group which will help a church navigate the issues if its congregants or pastors wish to provide sanctuary for migrants from ICE.

Sanctuary Movement (goes to the Baptist Joint Committee). They note that a church can put itself in danger of government legal or enforcement action if the GOP goes full fascist.

“Sanctuary” is not a legal term and provides no legal protection for the institution. A “sanctuary church” intentionally ministers to the undocumented community, which may include providing physical shelter for those facing detention or deportation. If a congregation determines that providing sanctuary is consistent with its theology and ministry, there are numerous practical and legal issues to consider. Read this column from BJC Associate General Counsel Jennifer Hawks for additional background.

The BJC created a printable handout with answers to a few common questions that churches may have when considering whether to provide sanctuary. It is not legal advice and does not substitute for consultation with an attorney.

In the issue of whether the photo released by the Press Secretary was manipulated or not, one person above in the thread offered other pictures of gatherings along the Reflecting Pool.

One of the issues which has been noted on social media is there are no reflections of the people standing along the pool, nor the fences which were erected.

In the other photos, you can see such reflections (which is kind of why it’s named the Reflecting Pool).

Additionally, other people who were at the event took their own photos or video, though there is no way to ascertain if their photos or videos are actually from July 4.

The Battle of Broadwater was brief last night and ended very early, due to the cost and shortage of fireworks here.

That was the shortest time I’ve heard them fired since I moved here. Almost everyone who had fireworks saved them for last night early (no big week-long build up).

They have a terminal case of cognitive dissonance — on the one hand, they claim they don’t care about the rest of the world; on the other hand, they love his bully persona and really believe that we are now truly respected throughout the world because we have replaced an eloquent intellectual with this big “brave” “leader” who stands up to the rest of the world.

Ugh. The fact that the prison bureau was using untrained prisoners for decoy work is an abomination. Decoys make or break dogs during training. If you have an untrained or poorly trained decoy you’re more likely to break the dog’s training and/or hurt the dog. That they won’t spend the money to use good decoys is mind boggling. And now their lack of foresight has resulted in the death of a prisoner just trying to make himself better. Shameful.

Assumes that Democrats will be able to retake the Senate and the WH. That’s not a certainty. The Courts, having been tilted to the right, will look to undo this as well.

Not if they are afraid for their lives if they oppose the regime or if they have been brainwashed. Do you think that Germans could have overthrown Hitler or Italians Mussolini if there were not outside forces that defeated these dictators militarily? The Russians have been cowed and do not resist the current dictator. The power of the modern state makes it difficult, if not impossible, to dislodge an autocratic regime, without outside support. Traditional Western liberalism is on the retreat everywhere in the world and autocracy and white supremacism is on the rise.

He’s failed to win the nomination twice before. He bailed in September 1987 when he ran the first time in the 1988 campaign. Then he bailed in January 2008, before the primaries.

And Bush I didn’t signal Iraq to take Kuwait — either an ambassador incompetently phrased things ambiguously, or a translator fucked up.
