So, I probably shouldn’t jump to conclusions, but we are renting a townhouse (year 6) and loved our neighbors when we first moved in. To our left was an older guy who is a Buddhist. He hired my son to care for his cat when he was gone, but ultimately moved to be with his ailing sister about 30 miles away. Then the single man to our right married and moved to MA. The people who moved into our left are like mole people. The cover their blinds and scurry in and out. But at least they are quiet. The 30-something woman who moved in to the right has a boyfriend who shows up at 1AM in his thunder truck (noisy Ford or Chevy, I can’t remember) or his Harley, and then the party starts. But worse, she had her dad put up an ostentatious US flag from her porch.
Why is this a problem? It shouldn’t be. I should love to see the flag! But in this day and age, the fact that my wife is a non-citizen permanent resident makes me see such displays as a threat under an administration that is launching raids all over the country.
I really hope that she is just a patriot who wants to show the flag. But it’s bizarre to see a week after July 4. I never thought I’d live to see the flag as suspect.
I didn’t believe what was happening to these children at first. I thought I was reading a horror story. Our children, their children — it doesn’t matter. ANY child within our care is our child.
When will these excuses stop? pic.twitter.com/rldHmHnAJ2— Gerry Connolly (@GerryConnolly) July 12, 2019

If I were a totally soulless GOP bastard, I could see Trump, Pence, and the CBP thinking this is a PR winner: imprison people in these camps worse than cattle, create the right conditions for squalor and disease in them, then turn around and blame the poor bastards in the cages for “bringing in” their own conditions.
Part of where the Democrats went wrong after Ford, then again after Reagan, then again after both Bushes, is that every single generation needs to be taught the evils which conservatism actually stands for.
Democrats have failed in that education (which includes getting out to vote for every election).
Conservatives fought for the Crown in the Revolution. They led the Whiskey Rebellion in Washington’s new government. They promoted and practiced slavery. They promoted Jim Crow laws. They opposed giving anyone the right to vote except property-owning men.
The religion of Conservatism has always been a cancer on the body politic, always either holding back the nation or trying to take it backward.

My wife was watching a video on YouTube, an atheist going after some particular Christian apologist.
It was preceded by an advert by Ben Shapiro, saying the atheist liberal left is attacking the free speech of conservatives by flagging videos to be demonitised. His “solution” to this in the advert was mass-brigading atheists (where atheist stands in for liberal) to get them demonitised for infringing on conservative “free speech.”
YouTube last year demonitised virtually every video made by atheists calling into question Christian or Muslim theology. Entire channels were demonitised. Christian channels calling for execution of atheists stay monitised however.

While the nation’s growth rate varied through wars, economic upheavals, baby booms, and baby busts, the current rate reflects a further dip in a trend toward a lower level of growth—below 0.80 percent—registered since the Great Recession of 2007-2009.”

The dawn sees me running

A sorrow that I feel in my chest
It’s my soul that suffers from love

A military officer needs to care about the lives of those under his or her command, but has to be able to order troops into battle where they might be killed.
That is a really tough decision for someone, ordering people to die. While empathy toward your troops is important, it cannot rule strategy or tactics.
McClelland may have also looked at his job from a political perspective: If the Union Army was handed a massive defeat under his command, he was done.

Designating a 0.62% population growth rate as stagnant implies that it’s really unhealthy. But let’s look at the long term effect of such a growth rate: Our current 327 million population would reach over a billion people in 200 years. So, no, we shouldn’t be trying to promote faster population growth rates. We should be trying to attain a stable world population that our planet can support without environmental devastation— and that population may be less than our current world population.

That tripe was not satire. It was a vicious attack.
Of course, as we all understand, contemporary conservatives (with the possible exception of P.J. O’Rourke) do not possess a sense of humor; they cannot distinguish between a comic/satiric article and a juvenile vicious humorless personal attack.

New Republic has always been a racist homophobic rag second only to National Racists.
William, I’m old enough to remember back in the 50s when Henry Wallace edited The New Republic when it was the only mainstream magazine that took on Joe McCarthy right at the start. Even The Nation buckled during the Red Scare. But it moved to the right starting in the mid 70s when it was run by Shactmanites in Social Democrats USA SDUSA just happened to be the incubator of the Neoconservative movement which gained steam when Reagan gladly let them run foreign policy. Then Andy Sullivan got control of the magazine and turned it into a full blown Neoconservative organ. Andy and his pal Michael Kelly looked the other way when Steven Glass endlessly fabricated article after article. And it has continued to move to the right since Kelly managed to get killed in Iraq. It’s just another cog in the Republican Bullshit Machine.

They could probably get away with 22 million. That is what the Yale-MIT study came up with about a year ago.
They want to count US citizens born here to undocumented immigrant parents as “illegals”, strip them of their citizenship and deport them as well. They are looking for an ethnic cleansing of the US.

eBay’s posting algorithm thinks that 12.50 is more than 14.95. I learned this trying to list a model plane kit. I wanted to put the “buy it now” price at 14.95 with the minimum acceptable offer as 12.50. Alas, when I try to post it, a listing error pop-up informs me that the minimum automatic offer acceptance price must be less than the ” buy it now” price. I un- checked “accept offers” and just went with 14.95 as the firm price.

The other day Freepers were going on about 30 million illegals-a couple even putting the number at 40 million. Have they stopped to think there are something like 327 million people here total? Are they really suffering from the misconception that 10% or so of the people here are undocumented? Seriously?

This feels like a mistake. The remedy has to be national policy, all this does is hand Trump a ready made excuse for losing the popular vote and possibly cost us House seats in areas where we need high Dem anti-Trump turnout to win.
Libertarian apologist Stefan Molyneaux started out on YouTube writing apologetics videos for libertarianism, and atheist videos tearing down Christian apologetics.
In addition to going full-metal antisemite, he has now adopted Christianity (knowing where the grift is for Patreon).
He makes the argument (amongst many other dubious libertarian propositions) that atheism≠the state (which is correct), then goes on about how atheism is really statism.

California is not the first state to do this. New York already did it, and eighteen other states are considering such measures.
Because elections are run by states, there cannot be a national policy without a change to the Constitution.
His ready-made excuse immediately falls apart on the question “why don’t you follow the law and release your tax returns?”

In 2016, P.J. O’Rourke wrote the best never-trumper endorsement of Hillary….

I endorse Hillary Clinton for president. She is the second-worst thing that could happen to America.
I endorse her. And all her pomps. And all her empty promises.
Better the devil you know than the Lord of the Flies on his own 757. Flying to and fro in the earth, with gold-plated seatbelt buckles, talking nativist, isolationist, mercantilist, bigoted, rude, and vulgar crap.

True, Hillary screwed up during the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi. As opposed to Donald Trump, who would have sent his supporters to boo and hiss the Islamic extremist attackers and then ask the police to take the extremists away.
Yes, Hillary sent twenty-some top-secret State Department documents to her personal email server. But this shows that she can keep a secret, even if she doesn’t know where to put it and it ends up decorating her Pinterest site. Trump would have sold the top-secret documents on eBay. Also, at least the CIA and NSA and so forth tell Hillary secrets. Would you tell a secret to Donald Trump?
Speaking of which… Like a toddler in a home with a loaded handgun, sooner or later Donald will find the briefcase with the nuclear launch codes. Better set the combination lock code to “411” before he does—he’ll never think of that. Donald hates information.
And the Clinton Foundation is an ugly mess of American foreign policy influence peddling and conflict of interest. Donald Trump will fix it. He has no interest in foreign policy so where’s the conflict? Give him a few months in office and America won’t have any influence left to peddle.

We still potentially lose the House seats and Trump’s massive comparative fundraising advantage is magnified by not having to spend anything in these very expensive markets. Turnout likely goes down which always advantages Republicans in close races. Then if he wins we’re even more fucked as he revenges himself on us. It’s a reactionary, emotionally driven policy that feels good but hasn’t been properly studied or gamed out. It’s too clever by half shit.

Yes, Hillary sent twenty-some top-secret State Department documents to her personal email server.
Let’s beat this dead horse again. It’s important for everyone to know that classified emails don’t get sent around on the unclassified networks and just get a SECRET mark stamped on them. The secret and top secret networks are completely separate networks that have their own servers, websites, and addresses walled off from other networks (ok, I’m aware of black core and crypto separation and can talk at length about it but it’s irrelevant here). Sending an email from a classified network to an unclassified one means going through automated and/or manual guards that stop classified information getting through. None of that happened. Clinton’s server was for unclassified information.
What they were talking about is the material floating around in the public Internet that’s technically classified. If the Washington Post publishes some leaked classified information, that information is still classified even if it’s splattered over every computer from here to Beijing. Anybody with a clearance had a great deal of difficulty following the Snowden and Wikileaks stories because you could easily end up mishandling highly classified information, and security officers would routinely warn people about it. So, as the Secretary of State, emailing a story about a leak and what to do about it was the OMG CLASSIFIED INFORMATION that Fox News hyperventliated about. Before the President* just ended up telling the Russian ambassador about classified missions, that is.

Molyneux is completely nuts in a way that’s suggestive of say, Narcissistic Personality Disorder, and believes whatever allows him to feel superior and to not engage in self-reflection. He might make noises that sound like an argument, but he’s vaguely engaging in “intellectual” exercise of logic—but with no examination of base assumptions or operational definitions—to retroactively justify whatever the fuck he wants.
Molyneux has consistently been a Nice Guy misogynist for years and has become increasingly open about his scientific racism and “Great Replacement”-panic—both idiocies channeled into a single video about Ancient Rome a few years ago (link to a debunking. Note: Shaun is awesome and you should watch his videos). Because the video involves Molyneux using history to argue his worldview, it makes his willingness to say anything, unsupported, extremely evident.
That he’s shifted to antisemitism and is finding ways to back-end religiousity doesn’t reflect any kind of transformation of thought, but rather the way that growing need for narcissistic supply (that feeling of better-than and in control) is conveniently fed by crank magnetism (all conspiracy theories sharing a sense of pride in their gnosis) and the conservative victimhood complex.

I’ve said it before, but he was an excellent trainer who lacked the capability to send his men to die as cold bloodedly as needed. Meade did not have that problem nor did Grant and both could kick Lee’s tail as a result.
Meade got written out of the history books for having a reporter ridden out on a donkey with a sign denouncing him as a spy and traitor. After that, he was excluded from all press reports of actions and Grant, his superior, got all the credit.

Meanwhile, in Turkey:
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan risks pushing Turkey’s economy into an economic collapse similar to those seen in Latin America under populist regimes, according to Ashmore Group Plc.
While more diversified than Venezuela’s oil-dependent economy, Turkey is currently on a very similar path of policy missteps that are likely to lead to ruin, the $85 billion emerging-market asset manager said.
Capital controls, nationalization and other policies designed to prevent the private sector from protecting its property as the macroeconomic environment deteriorates are the next “logical policy steps” that will follow in Turkey, Jan Dehn, the London-based head of research at Ashmore, said by email. His comments, initially in a research report Tuesday, came after Erdogan rattled markets by dismissing central bank Governor Murat Cetinkaya early Saturday.
Of course, any analysis should be questioned, but Mr. Dehn makes some good points. Namely,
Bad economic policies begin to extract a political cost.
Instead of fixing the causes of the underlying economic problem, the government decides to attack the symptoms of the problem, such as inflation, slower growth, weaker currency and slowing investment.
The real problems meanwhile are ignored and get worse. They include bad monetary policies, increasing interventionism, failure to develop local financing markets, overly low savings rates and bad foreign policies.
The government also blames other groups instead of itself, because this works politically, but it only makes investors and businesses even more worried as Erdogan will need more and more scapegoats as the economy worsens.
As the economic outlook worsens, investors and businesses begin to take action to defend their wealth and livelihoods. This results in capital flight, declining investment and other hedging strategies.
The government starts to blame the private sector for bad performance, taking action to prevent their defensive actions. Enter capital controls, nationalization, forced conversion of contracts.
Eventually the government has no financing, no growth, no future and plunges into a crisis.

R. Kelly’s behind bars thanks in large part to his own inner circle — enablers and ex-employees who handed the feds videos of Kelly having sex with underage girls, according to the attorney for multiple alleged victims.
Gerald Griggs — who represents Joycelyn Savage’s family among others — tells TMZ the federal investigation run by the Northern District of Illinois uncovered over 20 videos of Kelly engaged with minors.
Both Griggs and our federal law enforcement sources tell us the tapes show multiple victims … and prosecutors confirmed with multiple witnesses the girls were underage. Griggs says several of Kelly’s enablers — past and present — flipped and turned over the tapes to investigators. He says those videos were exactly what the feds needed to secure indictments for sex crimes, including child pornography.
Holy shit. Yeah, I’m thinking Kelly’s looking at spending the rest of his life in the slammer.

What we have here is a basic division of what is considered funny in right wing humor and non-right wing humor. Right wing America humor is the equivalent of one schoolyard bully pushing and tripping the target victim over a secretly crouching 2nd schoolyard bully.
Right wing humor is based on the denigration and often proposed elimination of entire groups of human beings based on their skin color, national origin, ethnicity, language, sexual spectrum, or religious affiliation… anything considered “the Other.”

no
if they’re underage, and there’s an age difference, it is not ‘sex’
it is rape and assault. Say it.
(unless we’re talking about two kids close in age, in love, etc)
re: #167 Rocky-in-Connecticut
What we have here is a basic division of what is considered funny in right wing humor and non-right wing humor. Right wing America humor is the equivalent of one schoolyard bully pushing and tripping the target victim over a secretly crouching 2nd schoolyard bully.
Right wing humor is based on the denigration and often proposed elimination of entire groups of human beings based on their skin color, national origin, ethnicity, language, or religious affiliation… anything considered “the Other.”
Like…non-right wing humor isn’t always about punching upward (hell, a lot of it is about punching inward), but right wing humor almost always, necessarily, seems to be about punching downward.

That has been their plan all along. Last thing the Russians want is to have to deal with someone who is competent and not just a lackey and yes-man for Trump
Given that Trump can apparently waive security requirements for anyone, what would prevent him from putting as acting Director of National Intelligence someone who had failed to receive security clearance such as Jared or Ivanka?

Dan Forest: No nation ‘has survived the diversity and multiculturalism that America faces today’
(Charlotte News & Observer)
North Carolina’s lieutenant governor faces criticism for comments he made about American culture during a speech at a church in Salisbury.
Lt. Gov. Dan Forest faced pushback on social media Friday after liberal news outlet Think Progress posted a story about him warning Cornerstone Church in Salisbury that “diversity and multiculturalism” could be harmful to America. The church posted a video of the June 23 service on its Facebook page.
Forest, a Republican, is expected to challenge Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper in 2020.
“God doesn’t want us to divide our state,” Forest said. “He doesn’t want us to divide our nation. He wants us to bring people together and live in the world like the Acts 2 church did. And yet no other nation, my friends, has ever survived the diversity and multiculturalism that America faces today, because of a lack of assimilation, because of this division, and because of this identity politics.”

You do nice things for women because you are nice at heart.
The women you are nice to might not want to have sex with you immediately, but guess what, most of them have friends and relatives of the female gender and nothing gets you in with them quicker than a positive recommendation from a fellow female…
These guys just cannot think around corners.
Those MRAs have the problem that, while they may be nice on the surface, they are ultimately doing the nice thing because they view relationships as transactional (like the shit-head in-chief) and therefore the nice thing deserves sex as the tit-for-tat. Their overall view of women is not as people, but living fleshlights.
re: #130 Colère Tueur de Lapin
A very rough visual addition and we’re at 120%. So, unless they’re counting the same people after they’ve broken up and gotten together with someone new, Stanford has a problem with data analysis.
I find it interesting that there is meaningful data for people meeting online back in the 80’s. If I were a cynical interpreter of data, it looks like just about everyone communicating on ARPANet was hooking up.
Or they’re counting one relationship in several categories.
You push up to the bar to order a drink. The guy you land next to says “hey, didn’t I see you at Jen’s BBQ?” And the friend you brought with you asks the guy “and isn’t that Paul waving at you from his table? Did you come with him?” The guy tells your friend, “yeah, Paul’s my neighbor, we drink here every time the Lakers win ‘cause his wife’s a Celtics fan and she doesn’t want to have to listen to us celebrating.”
So you and your friend go to Paul and his friend’s table. Where one thing leads to another.

Alaska Governor Now Murdering Head Start, Medicaid, Universities (Wonkette)
The Alaska state legislature is meeting in Wasilla for some fucking reason. Oh, and it is also fucking meeting in goddamn Juneau like it’s supposed to be. What the fuck is going on? I’ll tell you. Hold onto your bootstraps, it’s gonna be an ugly ass ride.
So far this year we have had our mystery ballot demystified, a shitty ass budget proposal, AK state Rep. Gabrielle LeDoux ejected from the House Majority Caucus, a regular legislative session, a Crime Bill, a special session, a compromise operating budget passed by both houses, a second special session called for by the governor, a veto, protests, the special session meeting in two different cities, the senate majority leader repealed and replaced, Rep. Tammie Wilson leaving the House Majority Caucus (led by a former Dem who flipped to an Indy in order to lead it), which contains both GOP and Dems, and a failed veto override. WE HAVE BEEN BUSY IN ALASKA, OKAY?
That brings us to the current day in this messiest of messes, aside from the horrifying budget proposal Governor Mike Dunleavy, our own off-brand Tim Robbins, laid on us like a dollop of poo in our root beer float. How did we get to this batshit place? Dunleavy promised our dumb asses we would get our full PFD — muh Permanent Fund Dividend! — if we voted for him. Members of both parties in the Alaska state legislature oppose the steep cuts our governor has proposed for the new budget. The budget is the source of ALL KINDS OF DRAMA, probably because it is a weaponized assassination document that Governor Dunleavy will be using to murder us all. Allegedly.

Conservatism has bashed foreigners all the way back to the Alien and Sedition Acts under President John Adams. The acts were intended to round up French citizens and immigrants and deport them to France. They were also intended to prevent criticism of government officials by the press.
In the meantime, going into the Election of 1800, conservatives were doing what they do best, fighting with each other to try to concentrate power. Adams was running against people in his own party as well as Thomas Jefferson. The mud slinging was as bad as anything Trump did. Oppo research dug up on behalf of Alexander Hamilton was leaked to the Democratic-Republicans, showing the Federalist infighting and accusing Adams of being a fool, a “disgusting egoist, and ungovernable temper” (remind you of anyone?)
When that pamphlet leaked (it was only intended for party insiders), that destroyed the Federalist Party, ensured Adams defeat, ending the First Party System, and ushered in the Era of Good Feelings. President James Monroe after the rout in the 1816 election made clear he thought the Federalists were autocrats who would try to set up a monarchy at the first opportunity and never allowed them to serve in his government (his reasoning being that would only prolong their decline).

The whole “atheist = libtard” is especially idiotic, as there is a whole subset of conservative/liberatrian atheists on Youtube who are about as Trumpanzee as you can get.
