Also, I’ve been fairly busy this week, so I haven’t got to check in here much… is there a consensus around here about the debate? Besides hoping that there will only be one debate in the next round because two nights in a row is fucking tough?
re: #209 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))
we have entire industries whose entire business model is based on access to a large pool of cheap, easily exploited workers, starting with agriculture, food packing & processing, food service, hotel, resort and domestic service, janitorial services, construction, gardening and landscaping…
And amazingly, there’s an entire political party—supported by what may be a majority of the white population and by far too great a percentage even if not the majority—that believes said workers aren’t cheap or easily-exploited enough because the standard of living for an American proletarian is higher than that of a Brazilian one, let alone Chinese or Bangladeshi.

and that unless we also lower our environmental, health and safety standards to those of Brazil, China and Bangladesh, we will not be able to compete with them on the world marketplace
There Dems I made it nice & easy for you. Trump’s promising a unilateral tax on consumers who’ll be buying computers, new clothes, sneakers, and office supplies RIGHT when people are getting their kids ready for a new school year. So he can payoff a bunch of giant corporate farms

I’m increasingly getting a 1920s redux vibe these days, esp. with the growth of tariffs and retaliation.
Dumb fucking luck.
Trump can’t figure out how trade works, so he’s going to double down on the trade war with China by imposing more tariffs that Americans pay:
The Fed had to cut the rates because the TCJA didn’t grow economy as the GOP/Trump claimed it would (they lied).
The Fed had to cut the rates because of the combination of Trump’s idiotic trade war and uncertainty over Brexit (among others). More tariffs will slow things more.— lawhawk (@lawhawk) August 1, 2019
The Fed may well have to do another rate cut because Trump’s idiotic trade war is slowing growth and harming the economy in ways Trump doesn’t care about (which is all of them).
Was going to write my thoughts on the debates, but Hank Stuever captured them pretty well:
Having subjected us to two nights of garishly adorned, overproduced, conflict-obsessed live “debates” among a field of 20 Democratic hopefuls (its own delusional gridlock of egos), CNN and the Democratic National Committee summoned the worst aspects of some of TV’s most popular genres and visual tropes.
The overall tone, of course, was cable-news alarmism, but the debates also resembled those celebrity-packed, prime-time game shows that litter the schedule all summer. One also got wafts of the blaring bombast of professional football broadcasts, and, yes, the stage-managed awkwardness of the lesser styles of reality TV…
CNN’s format facilitated a frenetic game of human darts, with questions designed to goad the jabbing. It was a never-ending two-night competition of lightning rounds, in 30- and 15-second rebuttals to one-minute answers…
we were watching CNN make television — pieces and bites and clips of which it can repurpose into more programming fodder, days’ worth of pundit banter, befitting the network that overhyped the event for weeks with name-drawings, a countdown clock and relentless reminders to watch…
My additional thoughts: In addition to breathing life into and way too much post-debate attention to ridiculous people who never should have been on the stage in the first place, it gave fringers opportunity to chip away at actual potential candidates, feeding right into the Republicans’ hands.
Whoever agreed to the CNN format and even more egregiously, set the bar so fucking low that anyone with a heartbeat could make the cut, should really be called out for some horrible decisions.
At least that’s my take—YMMV.

And like that the stock markets have tanked thanks to Trump pushing $300 billion more in tariffs - billions that Americans will be paying right when they’re doing back to school shopping. That’s adding to their bill.
Oh, and remember that climate change debate everyone wants? It will be broadcast on TV.

The small family dairy farmers are the ones who swung the election to Trump. They were desperate, and figured they might as well take a chance, as Hilary and the Democrats obviously didn’t give a shit about them.

re: #16 HappyWarrior

The New York Times has the scoop:
Over the years, Lachlan and James had traded roles, more than once, as heir apparent and jilted son. It was no secret to those close to the family that Murdoch had always favored Lachlan. (“But I love all of my children,” Murdoch would say when people close to him pointed out his clear preference for Lachlan.) But it was James who spent the first decades of the 21st century helping reposition the company for the digital future — exploiting new markets around the world, expanding online offerings, embracing broadband and streaming technology — while his older brother was mostly off running his own businesses in Australia after a bitter split from their father.
When Lachlan finally agreed to return to the United States in 2015, Murdoch gave him and James dueling senior titles: All the company’s divisions would report jointly to them. It was an awkward arrangement, not only because they were both putatively in charge of a single empire. James and Lachlan were very different people, with very different politics, and they were pushing the company toward very different futures: James toward a globalized, multiplatform news-and-entertainment brand that would seem sensible to any attendee of Davos or reader of The Economist; Lachlan toward something that was at once out of the past and increasingly of the moment — an unabashedly nationalist, far-right and hugely profitable political propaganda machine.

It’s a tariff of 10%.
Another way of saying that is, it’s a 10% tax on imports.
Still another way of saying that is it’s a 10% tax on imports that Americans are paying.
Still another way of saying that is it’s a 10% tax that more than wipes out the supposed benefits of the TCJA that a majority of Americans supposedly received.
So, while the billionaire class can have their money baths with the taxes they saved courtesy of the TCJA, everyone else is going to watch as they pay far more on imported goods from China (because they don’t have alternatives they can buy domestically).

On the bright side, we have a lot of guardrails in place today that we didn’t have in 1929. Like the trading curb/circuit breakers that close trading early if the indexes go up too much or go down too much. There’s still ways the system can fail, as we saw a decade ago, but for something like the Depression to happen, I think everything would have to fail.
And let’s not forget, part of the problem in the US was the mid-west facing a thousand year drought as the economy crashed. It’s not like we have to worry about climate disasters today…

Not really. There’s been a strong “Mercantilism was sound economics” wing in the Rs since I was in high school, because the assigned mentor my counselor gave me (a senior to my, I think, sophomore) was the president of the Arapahoe High Young Republicans (yes, that one, though as I’ve pointed out on other sites, 14 years before “that event”, quite possibly due entirely to the principal we had (he retired less than a year before the rampage).
These folks think that the Sixteenth Amendment was almost as much a mistake as the Seventeenth, and proudly point out that the US wasn’t a low-tax country [when they aren’t claiming it’s an analog of the EU rather than of Germany, and thus ‘not a country at all’] before 1913, just a country that couldn’t tax individuals directly but only the products being imported. For the majority of them (see “Make Mercantilism Great Again”), the switch from Gross National to Gross Domestic Product as a measure of the economy was a grave mistake and one that needs to be undone, preferably with retroactive adjustments to the statistics compiled in my lifetime. Driving non-1%-of-1% Americans to be unable to purchase a product until a US plant starts producing it again is their goal.
And they figure it’s been a violation of common sense that no one going back before TR agreed with them.

I ran into a few of the legal world equivalents of these types in my Federalist Society days. I remember more than a few people arguing that the 17th Amendment should be repealed… my former con law professor used to argue that “States qua States” should matter. And was very much in the fight to restore the Lochner-era. As if a pre-industrial constitutional frame work would actually work for a post-industrial society.

“President Donald J. Trump spoke with President Vladimir Putin today and expressed concern over the vast wildfires afflicting Siberia. The leaders also discussed trade between the two countries.”— Seung Min Kim (@seungminkim) August 1, 2019

re: #19 Khal Wimpo (the extinguisher of tiki torches)
The small family dairy farmers are the ones who swung the election to Trump. They were desperate, and figured they might as well take a chance, as Hilary and the Democrats obviously didn’t give a shit about them.
You may say they deserve it for being stupid enough to believe Trump’s lies - but they really weren’t given much of an alternative.
Whoever realistically addresses these people - who I grew up with - will win Wisconsin.
Who wins Wisconsin, wins the White House.
Yes, it’s heartbreaking to watch the family farms and the small farmers go under in Wisconsin, and in Minnesota where some of my mother’s people are still trying to eke out a living on a couple of the old family farms.
But…
How do you think the Dem candidates and party should address them, realistically and effectively? If they are starting from your stated position that “Hilary and the Democrats obviously didn’t give a shit about them” what actions or statements will change that perception?
Will they make voting decisions based on reality and practical considerations or on emotional factors? Will they recognize that the Dems are trying to work to improve conditions for 99% of Americans, including them? Do they expect the parties/candidates to put their concerns above other sections of the population? If they vote for Republicans again out of Fox-fueled resentment that they aren’t being catered to, then yes, very sadly I expect them to see the same results.

They’ve been voting Republican for decades. They don’t give a shit about anything but money for them a (diary price supports, etc) and cutting taxes (and programs) for everyone else. They chose to continue to vote Republican even as the FitzWalker regime gutted the state and continue to vote Republican for a racist & economically incompetent pig because they spend all day listening to Fox and Rush in their tractors and barns so they “know” Killery hates America and couldn’t run the Government.
Many of them are decent people and, no, not all of them vote GOP like that. My uncle was a Democratic voting dairy farmer but when his daughter married a black man the hate came out and I guarantee there was much more of that driving the GOP success than there was actual Economic thought involved.

Fortunately the North Platte River has gone down a bit since a couple weeks ago, but not enough for the irrigation canal in town to drain out into the river.
The canal board closed the gates to prevent rising water from coming into town via the river, but that will trap any rain which falls over the canal (no real good options here).

The amazing thing about this presidency is that if it was anyone else and the indicators were what they are, the president would be a heavy favorite to win. Hell, the indicators would probably be stronger because we’d be in the TPP and wouldn’t be in trade wars.

retirements are usually a pretty good leading indicator, especially in the House.
re: #263 MsJ
On a positive note…republicans keep retiring. So that is a plus!
Having run out of “Dems in disarray” stories for the moment, Politico has one that will ring a lot better in your ears: “Republicans rattled.” Republicans in the House have been retiring at a furious clip the past few weeks, “but some Republicans fear the worst is yet to come.” They “have decided to call it quits instead of sticking around to see whether the party wins back power in 2020,” says Politico. Or maybe in their heart of hearts they see what their party has become and can’t stomach it anymore? Probably not, but at any rate it’s a trend to cherish. We’re at six retirements and counting, with even Republicans knowing there are more coming, and probably a rash of them while members are back home for the August recess.
“Will there be more retirements? Most certainly there will be, for a range of reasons,” said one of the rats slinking off the ship, Rep. Paul Mitchell of Michigan. Everyone’s buzzing about who’s going to be next. This is Politico’s list of likely retirees: “Hal Rogers of Kentucky, Jim Sensenbrenner of Wisconsin and Don Young of Alaska; moderates, like Fred Upton of Michigan and Greg Walden of Oregon; lawmakers facing tougher races, like Texans Michael McCaul and Kenny Marchant, and Ann Wagner of Missouri; and the two members under indictment, Duncan Hunter of California and Chris Collins of New York.” Like being under indictment is a badge of shame for a Republican.
What no Republican is willing to go on the record to say is that the problem is Trump. There are “few rewards,” one anonymous House Republican says, for serving under Trump. The “already hostile political environment” is made worse by him every day when “there is some indefensible tweet or comment to defend or explain. It is exhausting and often embarrassing.” The specific problem of his sexism is only going to be worse for them as the Republican conference is drained of women. They already only have 13 in their conference, and two of them have called it quits.
And that new ActBlue counter fundraising service? It seems the GOP is trying to force every campaign to use it, which not only competes against an existing service, but seems to be a way to funnel money from campaigns to certain people.

Gavin Clarkson, former Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy and Economic Development at the Bureau of Indian Affairs,
Mick Rich, businessman and nominee for the U.S. Senate in 2018
If Susana Martinez is on the GOP offerings, pickings are slim. Hell, Pearce may go for it.
Maggie’s better than Ben, to my limited knowledge of the Dems on offer..

What won him Wisconsin was widespread voter disenfranchisement.
“Using data released by the federal Election Assistance Commission in June, a new Brennan Center analysis has found that between 2016 and 2018, counties with a history of voter discrimination have continued purging people from the rolls at much higher rates than other counties.”
“At least 17 million voters were purged nationwide between 2016 and 2018, similar to the number we saw between 2014 and 2016, but considerably higher than we saw between 2006 and 2008.”

He is. And, yes they do.

Looks fresh for a retain. Hard to believe that and he’ll my own state went for W.
Yeah, NM (like Nevada) has been trending blue for at least a decade. I suspect we will see Arizona also continue to trend that way and it’s very possible that the Dems will have a major advantage in much of the west for a generation.

Democrats still picked up seats in 2018 in the House, and managed to really overperform in the Senate. This just makes voter registration efforts vital.

I don’t know much about NM politics, but I am curious how Martinez went from one of the most popular governors to one of the least in 8 years.

It is interesting. I remember when she was talked about potentially being VP material.
Also, based on wrenchwench’s comment about NMGOP pickings being slim, the same thing sort of happened to the GOP in California. They sort of looked up one day and realized they didn’t really have any legitimate candidates for statewide offices.

Oh God, Pearce.
I’m hoping, based on Pearce’s losses the last time he sought a Senate seat, not to mention the Governor’s Mansion, that outside of a congressional district dominated by Cruces and Little Texas, Pearce just isn’t electable for a statewide office.
GOP isn’t dead here but they’re bleeding out. Who knew that deriding a big part of the state as Commies wasn’t smart.

Until the end of this current cold civil war, we are not. No amendments will pass.

“Non-tax paying?” Why would someone make something up like that (well, antisemitism, but why taxes)?
Chabad owns a chunk of land upstate; it used to be one of those old-timey Catskills resorts like you’d have seen in Marvelous Mrs Maisel or Dirty Dancing. It’s a place for the Brooklyn Hasids to send wives and kids for summer vacation; since it’s owned by a religious organization, it has the same tax status as a Catholic Church youth camp…
Speaking of rats jumping ship…
Three NRA board members resign from organization
Esther Schneider of Texas, Sean Maloney of Ohio and Timothy Knight of Tennessee resigned after saying that they lost their committee assignments after questioning allegations of spending by CEO Wayne LaPierre, The Washington Post reported.

GOP here has a fair amount of power, owing to vast rural swaths and the ‘Sconnies who come across the river and settle in the Twin Cities suburbs. It remains to be seen how far down they’ve gone since the tangerine wankmaggot torpedoed the national GOP, though.
re: #19 Khal Wimpo (the extinguisher of tiki torches)
Just paged this about the worsening farm crisis in Wisconsin.
The small family dairy farmers are the ones who swung the election to Trump. They were desperate, and figured they might as well take a chance, as Hilary and the Democrats obviously didn’t give a shit about them.
Instead, Trump has made things worse. Now they are crying like babies as their beloved cows are trucked away to the slaughterhouse.

You may say they deserve it for being stupid enough to believe Trump’s lies - but they really weren’t given much of an alternative.
Whoever realistically addresses these people - who I grew up with - will win Wisconsin.
Who wins Wisconsin, wins the White House.
I grew up in Wisconsin. The squeeze has been going on since the the 1970s. Get big and live another 10 years. Not get big or die, because you are going to die. Just delay it. Most of these operators have voted republican forever. Sorry, I have no sympathy. And the small number of farmers don’t swing the state, the pricks in Waukesha County and the Fox Valley do that by voter ID.

Speaking of, did you get my email? But yeah Minnesota is surprisingly more lighter blue than I thought. I think it’s because the Iron Range which was once a Dem stronghold has grown more GOP. Shame. I have quite distant cousins that way.

Didn’t help but seriously, women abandoned Hillary in the rural part of the state. I can count on one hand the number of women who voted _for_ Hillary. More voted against Trump but the most voted for Trump because she would start a war and was too mean to be president.

I did. I still have to approach his team, which is delicate, but I’ll see if I can get the information to them.
It is lighter blue than most people think - ask any of my wingnut friends, and they’d tell you MN is a socialist utopia - but the thing about the MN DFL is that they make stuff happen when they are in power. We don’t fuck around.

The tax is paid by American importers who bring the goods to the US to sell. China isn’t paying the tariffs. We are.
And it isn’t just a pass through. They are marking it up or their gross margin will go down and the Street will punish them.
I’m back.
It’s starting to rain lightly here.
I inspected the canal (it is not easy to get to in a car in places, even in town) out a mile or so into the Sandhills.
The level in town is a bit lower than it was this morning (yay) but north of town there is a spot where it’s out of the bank and running across a ranch.
Irrational impartiality that erodes basic journalistic standards is one of the key reasons that we’re fucked.
This is a perfect example of a lie being used as a shibboleth. When you repeat it verbatim without correctly & preemptively identifying it as a lie you’re actively helping him misinform your audience
