July 26, 2019 | Bob Boilen — I was thrilled to have the gifted voice of Tamino gracing the Tiny Desk. But as charged as I was, that didn’t match the excitement that Colin Greenwood expressed as we rode up the elevator. The Radiohead bassist (and bassist for this special performance) shared a brief text exchange with his son, basically telling his hugely accomplished dad that playing the Tiny Desk was “the coolest thing he’d ever done!” That made us all smile.

The attraction that brought Colin Greenwood and these other musicians to bond with Tamino, a young singer of Belgian, Egyptian, and Lebanese descent, is his voice; it’s inescapable. For me a reference point is Jeff Buckley; they both have a way of soaring into the upper registers and into the ether; it’s stunning. I first heard Tamino perform live at a convention center in Austin; he transformed and transcended the relatively soulless space.

The songs performed at the Tiny Desk by the 22-year-old singer come from both a 2018 EP titled Habibi and later that year an album titled Amir. His use of that falsetto had some faces in the NPR audience gasping in astonishment. There’s a yearning in Tamino’s songs that I don’t often hear in popular music — he makes every vowel count. There’s nothing casual about his expressions, whether he’s singing about a sweetheart in the song “Habibi” or despair turned to joy in “Indigo Night.”

Some of the inspiration for Tamino’s approach comes from his heritage and in particular his grandfather Muharram Fouad, a well-known Egyptian singer known as “The Sound of the Nile.” It was his late grandfather’s old guitar that Tamino had first played. He got to know his grandfather’s music through his cassettes. Tamino would later incorporate what he heard into his songs. It’s ageless music that Tamino makes — it’s melodies feel well worn, but it’s also vibrant and intoxicating.

Trump’s trotting out Ivanka to deal with this, because Trump’s too busy on the golf course and apparently trying to delete older tweets that explicitly incite his base to violence.

And is Trump actually deleting old tweets (in violation of federal record-keeping rules) where he’s inciting to violence? Seeing mixed messages on this. Then again, his rallies have videos and the Internet is forever, so we know he’s a fucking racist who speaks to white supremacists to tap into their violent fantasies of killing nonwhites, immigrants, and more…

I’ve tried, but I can’t even imagine a more tone-deaf response, totally devoid of self-awareness.

Of course, she doesn’t want to follow this thought to where it really leads.

All in the family.

Small comfort, but she’s getting dragged big time in the responses.

I had no idea the English language has so many variations of the phrase “Start with your father, Princess Idiot.”

Someone calling her a squatter in the White House was a nice flourish.

re: #511 Anymouse 🌹🎃

Not trying to blame the victim here (Heidi Cruz), but one of Cruz’s superpacs started it against Trump in Utah, taking out billboards across the state with lingerie shots of Melania Trump to paint Melania Trump as immoral to Mormon voters.

Trump saw his wife attacked, and went after Cruz’s wife in response.

Ted Nugent suggests we kill Hillary.
Rick Santorum wants to arm every Walmart shopper.
I know quite a few people with mental illness.
They haven’t killed anyone.
If video games are the culprit Japan should be a graveyard.
The NRA is trying to figure out which weapon will get a bump from the murders and buy stock.
Too soon to talk about it.
Is gun shot long term trauma a pre existing condition?
Put a jar on the 7-11 counter to help defray the costs of non stop carnage.
Because with the GOP and the evil they run cover for, there is no bottom.
None.
I’m going on vacation, visit my old friend the Atlantic Ocean, and going to hug and kiss my oldest son and his wife and my two grand daughters and unplug.

Yup, and taking it literally means “blame the atheists.”

Atheists, video games, single mothers, movies, music, prayer in school, moral decay, Democrats, socialism, gun-free zones, mental health, home life, poor parenting, lack of church attendance, need to read the Bible more, it’s just a tool, what about auto deaths, suicides don’t count, &c.

Why would Trump — or his aides — be deleting his tweets that refer to immigrants as ‘invaders” if they have nothing to be guilty about?

And do they seriously think there aren’t records, screen caps of all of his tweets of the past?

For Trump “plausible deniability” consists of Trump denying something and it being found plausible by the Press and his supporters

Calling it mental illness especially since your party and ideology hasn’t met a cut to mental health services it hasn’t liked is such shit. And I’m sorry but reducing it to mere mental illness ignores that these shootings are premeditated and the people committing them know right from wrong. It’s just a way for people without mental issues to go “Well I’m not like that.” I might buy it was mental health but if for the fact when people of color commit crimes, they don’t get the same latitude or empathy. We are failing people but that’s through people like Trump who lie repeatedly about assimilation.

CarolJ  Aug 4, 2019 • 2:20:31pm

Can I rant a little? Mental Illness happens like any other illness in all ages, races, and in both sexes, so how come I never hear about an elderly widow who feels she doesn’t have anything to live for shooting up a store or church? When was the last female mall or school shooter? And mental illness is like any other illness, in degrees? How come professionals can’t tell us where on the spectrum of illness a mall shooter happens to be, and what to do about it?

Another rant: the gun humpers first response is “don’t take my guns!” as if it’s the only approach gun control people have to such mass violence. But America no longer gives a
shit about their feelings. Even when there are suggested bans, those are limited to the AR-15 and other similar weapons. Frankly, if you need more than a revolver, six-gun, or shotgun in an urban area, then its time to do something about the quality of law enforcement in your area, not stockpile 25 guns you will never use.l

I’m not mad at you, but don’t defend this tweet. It was unnecessary, unwarrataned, and not needed. I’m sure the people who were injured or the families of those who died will take comfort in such calm, logical numbers.

For someone who is supposed to be a preeminent science communicator, he should know when to keep his fucking mouth shut and not go full-metal Mr. Spock.

Particularly when 29 PEOPLE FUCKING DIED FOR THE “CRIME” OF SHOPPING AT WALMART OR GOING TO A FUCKING NIGHTCLUB.

Brietbart twitter feed is a goddamn septic tank.

No they weren’t illegal. They weren’t here illegally.

El Paso/Juarez has a huge bridge between them, and tens of thousands of people go back and forth every single day. To shop, to go to concerts, to go to dinner. Stores in El Paso, including the Wal-Mart in question, advertise in Juarez every day to try to entice Juarez residents to come spend their money in El Paso.

As a scientist he should be aware:

We’ve significantly reduced road deaths (stricter treatment of drunk drivers, improved vehicle design for safety imposed by law, improved engineering of highways and safety devices, &c).

We have a preventative for flu deaths developed by scientists: Vaccines. Same with pneumonia.

We’ve dramatically lowered medical error or medically-induced diseases, by science-driven data leading to improved outcomes through regulations, laws, and practices.

She doesn’t think she’s a monster, but she just assumed that if a Mexican citizen is in El Paso, they must be illegal, and therefore worthy of being shot down like a dog in the street.

re: #72 CarolJ

Not counting the town gun shop, there are more guns in my town than people. Every last home has a gun including mine (I have one).

Most people here have multiple guns for different kinds of shooting (target, skeet, deer or elk, &c).

The gun shop here does not sell AR-style firearms. Most of his business is actually ammunition for out-of-town hunters in the area.

Well, Dr. “I demoted Pluto” likes to promote science-driven data. That’s fine, as our decision should be predicated on the facts.

He is usually very good at promoting scientific understanding, but sometimes he simply fails to communicate that human beings aren’t entirely driven by scientific understanding.

If we were, we wouldn’t root for sports teams, practice religions, appreciate or be moved the beauty of art or song, cry over a sad movie, be inspired by heroism or courage, &c.

That exceptionally bad take on trying to present science-driven data failed because he presented faulty data (all scientists do that occasionally, it’s the peer review which corrects that), and fell right into right-wing talking points without realising it (propaganda is insidious).

it’s guns and people who think guns are the solution to whatever their problem is

He mentions suicide. How many of those are by firearm? That is an NRA talking point to minimise shootings by classifying suicide by firearm as somehow separate from other firearms deaths.

After Australia enacted gun laws in 1996, the biggest reduction in gun deaths was those by suicide.

Public shaming of Republican politicians is one tool in the toolbox. It probably won’t get many of them to do anything.

That said, as they whinge about how they are mistreated, it breaks the image they are all-powerful or invincible.

The quintessential example of that is Mitch McConnell’s Senate complaints about how he’s being treated on Twitter as Moscow Mitch (and today on Twitter MassacreMitch is also trending against him).

His appearance at the Fancy Farm event in western Kentucky with Russian flags and communist symbols (along with the same on billboards in the state) are showing him to be vulnerable. Mockery and derision are often the only tools the oppressed have against oppressors, and Sen. McConnell knows it.

He is flustered possibly for the first time in his political career, and flustered politicians make mistakes.

Two things can be true at the same time.

1) Mass shootings are on the rise, and that’s being driven by racism and misogyny and we shouldn’t let so many people get so many guns so easily.

And

2) the actual numbers of people killed in mass shootings is miniscule so your likelihood of dying in one is very, very small, so rationally you personally are not as threatened by this as you might feel you are.

Part of terrorism is to make you feel unsafe everywhere, no matter what the reality is. Perhaps that was his point.

I gave up on drunk nights a long, long time ago. But I’ve taken to having a cocktail or two of an evening. I tend toward the citrus + white alcohol sorts, but sometimes also an Old Fashioned.

I had long had this odd feeling like I’m not old enough for those yet, but then I realized that, for shit’s sake I’m SIXTY ONE YEARS OLD!! and there’s nobody in authority to tell me I can’t have a cocktail.

I also felt the same about buying my first leather jacket, like there was some authority that would rule on whether I was ‘cool enough’ for it.

Imposter Syndrome and generally poor self image make you think weird things.

What Both Sides Don’t Get About American Gun Culture (Politico)

Subtitled: Nice piece of both-siderism, by AUSTIN SARAT and JONATHAN OBERT /s

Amid the horrors of a mass shooting, it’s easy to forget that guns are social glue—and gun control efforts that don’t account for that will fail.

“Societal glue.”

The view of guns as neutral tools, a view shared by conservative defenders of gun rights as well as liberal advocates of gun regulation, misses a crucial fact about guns and gun ownership. It wrongly assumes that the distribution of guns and their presence in their owners’ lives are a totally independent facts that don’t shape the opportunities and choices of the people who use them.

This is bulkshyte. I don’t know any liberal (anecdotes are not data however) who thinks of guns as “tools.” They think of them as dangerous machines which must always be respected for their ability to cause mayhem and death if misused.

My “opportunities and choices” are not shaped by owning a shotgun. They were shaped by a lifetime of experience, good and bad. A shotgun is merely a deadly object I possess if I do not use it properly.

312
William Lewis  Aug 4, 2019 • 6:39:20pm

Okay, I see why 8ch is still up.

8chan is among the more than 19 million Internet properties that use Cloudflare’s service. We just sent notice that we are terminating 8chan as a customer effective at midnight tonight Pacific Time. The rationale is simple: they have proven themselves to be lawless and that lawlessness has caused multiple tragic deaths. Even if 8chan may not have violated the letter of the law in refusing to moderate their hate-filled community, they have created an environment that revels in violating its spirit.

Stand by for the howling over at 8ch. JJ McNabb might want to do her monitoring thing to see if they plan a last hurrah over there.

I’m more of a rum guy myself, so I prefer Daquiris, though I do like a good Margarita.

A few months ago, I bought a Calamondin tree - citrus tree that produces a lot of small fruit smaller and rounder than kumquats. Very sour, lots of seeds. My Mom had one that she used to make marmalade and I wanted one for a long time, just ‘cause of Mom.

One day, I ran out of limes. So I picked 6 little fruit of the Calamondin tree and used them instead. Yummy! “Calamondaquiri”, I christened it.

I understand that the fruit is very popular with Filipinos, who call the Calamansi, and use them to make Calamansi Lemonade - with a LOT of sugar because they’re sour as fuck!

Terminating Service for 8Chan

They specifically call out 8ch as “lawless” detailing the long string of mass-murders associated with the site. They also address I Amendment and libertarian free speech arguments as why they don’t apply to Cloudflare.

They also note they took this action against Daily Stormer and the fact that site wasn’t down for long, finding a competitor hosting service.

Donald Trump’s half-mast proclamation still isn’t up on the White House Website.

Is his staff trying to hide it or something?

If you care to read the text, it can be found at this half staff notification site.

**HALF-STAFF ALERT~ Until Sunset August 8, 2019** Honoring the Victims of the Tragedies in Texas and Ohio (Stars and Stripes Daily)

a) You do not “honor” the victims of a mass-murder you douchecanoe. “Mourn” is the proper term for such a proclamation.

b) In the body of the text is the Republican phrase du jour, “senseless attack.” It’s not senseless. We know why it happened. The murderer wrote it down on 8ch.

Heh. Apple pie season is in the fall. I guess you can make apple pie all year round if you like it, but I associated it with fall. YMMV.

The thing I don’t like about Tyson’s response is that it fails to acknowledge that it’s not just a matter of death, but killing with the specific intent of creating terror and expanding an agenda of terrorism.

Each shooting is not just…casualties…but a general worsening of the body politics’s health. And each shooting is a demonstration of the general power of cruelty, incentivizing further cruelty.

Look at that house; just smell the economic anxiety.

I get why the grandparents are devastated; no one wants to think of their child or grandchild as a mass-murderer.

One of the mothers of the Columbine High School murderers (Sue Klebold) did a Ted talk not too long ago about what the family goes through in the wake of such horror.

The grandparents will go through the same. They already know about the press camping out on your lawn. Next will come recriminations from friends and neighbours and strangers: Why didn’t you see the signs? You’re bad (grand)parents. Shunning.

My son was a Columbine shooter. This is my story | Sue Klebold

I wonder if micro dosing would be good for my head. I’ve heard it clears the big bugs out. Would be interesting to see what could happen preferably with a good coach/therapist.
