I recall reading about the Donner Party, a group of US pioneers who got caught in a snowstorm in the Sierra Nevada and had to resort to eating their dead after their draft animals ran off and they ran out of food.

Back when I had my brush with the music industry in 1990, the record label assigned two guys to fly in from LA and work on the design and photography of the album. We didn’t know who they were, but as we drove around NYC and LI and talked to them, we learned that we were in the presence of legends. The art director was Gary Burden, who designed many of the industry’s most iconic album covers, including Joni Mitchell’s Blue, most of Neil Young’s albums, and the first CSN album. He and his photographer, Henry Diltz, were responsible for most of the album design coming out of LA in the 70s.
I got a message from one of my band mates that Gary passed away yesterday at the age of 84. Here’s a video tour that Gary gave to World Cafe, visiting many of the spots where those album covers took shape. RIP, Mr. Burden.

Though President Donald Trump has made cracking down on immigration a centerpiece of his first term, his administration lags far behind President Barack Obama’s pace of deportations. Obama - whom immigrant advocates at one point called the “deporter in chief” - removed 409,849 people in 2012. Trump, who has vowed to deport “millions” of immigrants, has yet to surpass 260,000 deportations in a single year.
And while Obama deported 1.18 million people during his first three years in office, Trump has deported fewer than 800,000.
It is unclear why deportations have been happening relatively slowly.
Eager to portray Trump as successful in his first year in office, ICE’s 2017 operational report compared “interior removals” - those arrested by ICE away from the border zones - during the first eight months of Trump’s term with the same eight-month period from the previous year, reporting a 37% increase from 44,512 to 61,094 people.
But the agency also acknowledged that overall deportation numbers had slipped, attributing the decline to fewer border apprehensions and suggesting that an “increased deterrent effect from ICE’s stronger interior enforcement efforts” had caused the change.
Administration officials this year have noted privately that Mexican nationals - who are easier to deport than Central Americans because of U.S. immigration laws - also made up a far greater proportion of the migrants apprehended along the U.S.-Mexico border during Obama’s presidency.
ICE officials say that the detainee population has swelled - often cresting at 5,000 people more than ICE is budgeted to hold - as a direct result of the influxes of migrants along the southern border, and that when ICE is compelled to release people into the United States, it creates “an additional pull factor to draw more aliens to the U.S. and risk public safety,” said ICE spokesman Bryan Cox.
“The increase in ICE’s detained population this year was directly tied to the border crisis,” Cox said. “About 75% of ICE’s detention book-ins in fiscal year 2019 came directly from the border.”
Immigrant advocates say the packed jail cells result from an administration obsessed with employing harsh immigration tactics as a means of deterrence. They say the Trump administration is keeping people like Madjitov locked up when they previously would have been released pending the outcomes of their cases.
ICE also is holding people longer: Non-criminals are spending an average of 60 days in immigrant jails, nearly twice the length of the average stay 10 years ago, and 11 days longer than convicted criminals, according to government statistics.
The cruelty is the point. It’s all about maximizing harms to people who are least able to endure them. It makes white guys feel better about things, because nonwhites are being detained indefinitely, despite not committing actual crimes, and their immigration status remains uncertain.
Instead of spending money to clear backlogs, Trump wants to spend it on the boondoggle wall that is just as easy to climb, cut, and otherwise cross as the prior barrier. It’s all one huge con-job from Trumpworld.

I recall reading, many years back, a lengthy (like 2000+ words-lengthy) online disquistion on the scientific/biological/medical probability of the Virgin Birth occurring as described in the Bible. And, after a long rundown of the odds, occurrences and mechanics of parthogenesis in various lower life-forms, animals, mammals and humans; the author concluded that yes, even if the probabilities in favor of it were expressed in incredibly low numbers, it WAS possible.
Of course, they also pointed out that even if the tale of the Virgin Birth did have a “scientific” foundation, it would mean that genetically, rather than being Mary’s son, Jesus was actually her twin brother.
Which as far as superstitious origin-myths go, makes about as much sense as anything.

That way there would not have been any Sondlands or Morrisons, or others to potentially rat on him. The notion of “no-go zones” in NYC is very, very, VERY out-of-date. Our crime rate has gone down every year for 25 years. It’s now the lowest of all American cities with a population over 500,000.
In the late 80’s/early 90’s there was more than 2000 murders a year; for the last 5 years, it’s been less than 300. South Bronx, Times Square, Alphabet City, all the used-to-be dangerous places, are now super-bougie gentrified places where buying an apartment is close to $1000 per square foot.

I recall reading, many years back, a lengthy (like 2000+ words-lengthy) online disquistion on the scientific/biological/medical probability of the Virgin Birth occurring as described in the Bible. And, after a long rundown of the odds, occurrences and mechanics of parthogenesis in various lower life-forms, animals, mammals and humans; the author concluded that yes, even if the probabilities in favor of it were expressed in incredibly low numbers, it WAS possible.
Of course, they also pointed out that even if the tale of the Virgin Birth did have a “scientific” foundation, it would mean that genetically, rather than being Mary’s son, Jesus was actually her twin brother.
Which as far as superstitious origin-myths go, makes about as much sense as anything.
I’ve always found it funny when people try to make scientific sense of ‘miracles’ in the bible, whether it’s “What if one of God’s days is really just a billion years” to “If you put water in a wineskin that’s held red wine, it will pick up color from the residue” to “Maybe Jesus was born through parthenogenesis?”
How about “Mary had it off with some other guy and told Joseph it was the Almighty”?
