I don’t think interest would have dampened. However, Trump moved the needle even more. If you don’t think Trump should be impeached, you should be annoyed with Trump’s actions but then again people who don’t think he should be impeached aren’t exactly principled given how they respond to his tantrums.

a rather critical op-ed piece from newsmax, which I find surprising

Trump’s Impeachment Defense Undermines Case for Re-Election

The best defense of President Donald Trump on the first day of the U.S. House’s public impeachment hearings came from Rep. Elise Stefanik, Rep.- N.Y.

She cited “the two most important facts” for Americans trying to understand the inquiry into the president withholding military assistance to Ukraine unless it investigated former Vice President Joe Biden, “No. 1, Ukraine received the aid,” she said. “No. 2, there was in fact no investigation into Biden.”

Stefanik’s defense is shrewd because it sidesteps Trump’s hand-waving and gaslighting.

It is also dangerous because it reveals Trump’s weakness as a leader.

The flat-Earth conspiracy is spreading around the globe. Does it hide a darker core?

Selective skepticism.

If you are a Biblical literalist, then you not only have to reject science and history, but you also have to reject objectivity and logic, as the Bible repeatedly contradicts itself.

I am willing to discuss theology with Christians who believe in the Bible as God’s inspired Word, but not with Biblical literalists.

except that I don’t think that Anna was impregnated by an Angel, that is another story.

She and Joachim did it (in the Missionary Position we can assume) and managed to bear a child who did not carry Original Sin from Adam & Eve. (well, from Eve, who tricked Adam into it because women are the ones who are truly wicked, remember?)

Now we are adding layers of Catholic Doctrine on top of Biblical Literalism which is a real rabbit hole

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Trump’s health has always been in doubt and his mental health even moreso. That he went on an unannounced trip to Walter Reed for medical evaluation, reeks of a more serious problem than anyone in Trumpworld is willing to admit.

You have docs at the WH to attend to most basic kinds of ailments. Going unannounced means avoiding the typical protocols set up for handling the president there. That’s not normal, and there’s no way this was “getting the jump” on an annual physical that is typically done in February.

It reeks. The coverage of this reeks too, since we know how the media covered health issues for Hillary, Bernie, and now Trump. One of these isn’t like the other.

If everyone treated Trump’s health emergency like we did Hillary’s, we’d have wall to wall Trump death watch on TV. If everyone treated Bernie’s heart attack like we did Hillary’s pneunomia, we’d be getting nonstop calls for Bernie to quit the race and that he’s too fragile for the rigorous demands of running for the WH, let alone being POTUS.

So impeachment grinds on, and the Democrats continue to pile on witnesses this week, including Sondland.

That’ll be must-see TV, and you know damned well Trump will be hanging on every last word (but not tweeting threats, since he only does that with strong women). Trump continues to claim this is a witch hunt and no one has direct evidence. Okay. Put up those who have direct evidence. Allow Pence, Pompeo, Rudy, Perry, and Bolton to testify. Come and testify yourself you tangerine toddler, because you could clear this up right quick.

But we know the reality here. You don’t want anyone testifying because they’d reveal crimes we know about and many more we don’t. They’d implicate you and everyone else in your admin. Your lawyers know not to let you testify, because you’re incapable of giving a straight answer to anything and you’d probably implicate yourself in still other crimes, while admitting to the crimes.

It’s crimes all the way down in Trumpworld, and nothing here exonerates Trump or his cronies. Everyone knows it - even the GOP. But the GOP continues to back Trump because the base is Trump’s know nothing extremist core.

I recall reading about the Donner Party, a group of US pioneers who got caught in a snowstorm in the Sierra Nevada and had to resort to eating their dead after their draft animals ran off and they ran out of food.

Seems that the animals later wandered back, but one of the survivors, a bit addled from his ordeal, continued eating human flesh because he said it tasted better…

I recall reading about how Catholic theologians got around Mary becoming pregnant and still retaining her virginity, they supposed that an Angel impregnated her through his ear using some sort of trumpet device and that she had a hatch in her belly to allow them child to be removed without breaking her hymen.

Yep, no normal person can wrap their head around this fucking nonsense.

Unless God is horny like Zeus was, an all powerful being should be able to just make a woman pregnant. Then again, we know how pregnancy works. If you think that it’s the act of two people making out that causes pregnancy, then of course you would need to have it somehow.

Back when I had my brush with the music industry in 1990, the record label assigned two guys to fly in from LA and work on the design and photography of the album. We didn’t know who they were, but as we drove around NYC and LI and talked to them, we learned that we were in the presence of legends. The art director was Gary Burden, who designed many of the industry’s most iconic album covers, including Joni Mitchell’s Blue, most of Neil Young’s albums, and the first CSN album. He and his photographer, Henry Diltz, were responsible for most of the album design coming out of LA in the 70s.

I got a message from one of my band mates that Gary passed away yesterday at the age of 84. Here’s a video tour that Gary gave to World Cafe, visiting many of the spots where those album covers took shape. RIP, Mr. Burden.

I am not the least surprised that Malkin is backing Holocaust deniers and that that’s a bridge to far for the far right YAF.

All these extremists are purity ponies in their own right, and seem to pick and choose what is a bridge too far. White nationalism isn’t a bridge too far for the GOP, and we’ve seen it take over the central tenets of the party - whether it’s immigration or voting rights or civil rights and safety net funding.

But Holocaust denial and anti-Semitism isn’t too far for some of these thugs.

And we know Malkin doesn’t have a problem with internment camps, just as Trump has sought (and done).

lawhawk  Nov 18, 2019 • 7:27:34am

Weird how even Trump’s central plan of deportation of people isn’t particularly successful as compared to.. *checks notes* Obama.

stamfordadvocate.com

Though President Donald Trump has made cracking down on immigration a centerpiece of his first term, his administration lags far behind President Barack Obama’s pace of deportations. Obama - whom immigrant advocates at one point called the “deporter in chief” - removed 409,849 people in 2012. Trump, who has vowed to deport “millions” of immigrants, has yet to surpass 260,000 deportations in a single year.

And while Obama deported 1.18 million people during his first three years in office, Trump has deported fewer than 800,000.

It is unclear why deportations have been happening relatively slowly.

Eager to portray Trump as successful in his first year in office, ICE’s 2017 operational report compared “interior removals” - those arrested by ICE away from the border zones - during the first eight months of Trump’s term with the same eight-month period from the previous year, reporting a 37% increase from 44,512 to 61,094 people.

But the agency also acknowledged that overall deportation numbers had slipped, attributing the decline to fewer border apprehensions and suggesting that an “increased deterrent effect from ICE’s stronger interior enforcement efforts” had caused the change.

Administration officials this year have noted privately that Mexican nationals - who are easier to deport than Central Americans because of U.S. immigration laws - also made up a far greater proportion of the migrants apprehended along the U.S.-Mexico border during Obama’s presidency.

ICE officials say that the detainee population has swelled - often cresting at 5,000 people more than ICE is budgeted to hold - as a direct result of the influxes of migrants along the southern border, and that when ICE is compelled to release people into the United States, it creates “an additional pull factor to draw more aliens to the U.S. and risk public safety,” said ICE spokesman Bryan Cox.

“The increase in ICE’s detained population this year was directly tied to the border crisis,” Cox said. “About 75% of ICE’s detention book-ins in fiscal year 2019 came directly from the border.”

Immigrant advocates say the packed jail cells result from an administration obsessed with employing harsh immigration tactics as a means of deterrence. They say the Trump administration is keeping people like Madjitov locked up when they previously would have been released pending the outcomes of their cases.

ICE also is holding people longer: Non-criminals are spending an average of 60 days in immigrant jails, nearly twice the length of the average stay 10 years ago, and 11 days longer than convicted criminals, according to government statistics.

The cruelty is the point. It’s all about maximizing harms to people who are least able to endure them. It makes white guys feel better about things, because nonwhites are being detained indefinitely, despite not committing actual crimes, and their immigration status remains uncertain.

Instead of spending money to clear backlogs, Trump wants to spend it on the boondoggle wall that is just as easy to climb, cut, and otherwise cross as the prior barrier. It’s all one huge con-job from Trumpworld.

Because ICE and CBP aren’t arresting and deporting people who are here illegally. They are being thugs, and wasting their resources to make a show of deporting people with brown skin. Going after people who they’ve decided have been here long enough might make their base feel good - removing possible Democratic voters - but going after the guy in Iowa who’s been there so long people come to his restaurant every day is a bad ROI.

It’s much bigger than the individuals. He pardoned these war criminals to send a broader message to his followers that violence and rank lawlessness is okay if it advances something Trump considers to be necessary. He’s priming his base for street violence in defense of him contesting the 2020 election.

There’s also a second, narrower message being aimed at people like Flynn, Manafort, and Stone that they will be rewarded for their loyalty once it becomes politically expedient to do so.

Critics say the President is undermining the military justice system by pardoning a convicted war criminal. “This sets a dangerous precedent that there are no consequences to mass murder,” Judge Harmon Willis said. “Tons of soldiers are going to start shooting up bases now that they can get away with it.” The weird kid in your unit who wears a black trenchcoat with chains was unavailable for comment.

I recall reading, many years back, a lengthy (like 2000+ words-lengthy) online disquistion on the scientific/biological/medical probability of the Virgin Birth occurring as described in the Bible. And, after a long rundown of the odds, occurrences and mechanics of parthogenesis in various lower life-forms, animals, mammals and humans; the author concluded that yes, even if the probabilities in favor of it were expressed in incredibly low numbers, it WAS possible.
Of course, they also pointed out that even if the tale of the Virgin Birth did have a “scientific” foundation, it would mean that genetically, rather than being Mary’s son, Jesus was actually her twin brother.
Which as far as superstitious origin-myths go, makes about as much sense as anything.

…what Trump should have done is ask a friend to go buy him a cheap burner phone with a prepaid SIM card at a supermarket (for cash), so there would be no paper trail. Then he should have gone to one of his less-frequented golf clubs at dawn when no one was outdoors on the course, and used the phone to personally dial Zelensky and make his pitch. That way there would not have been any Sondlands or Morrisons, or others to potentially rat on him. Using a new phone from a location he hadn’t been to before as president would greatly reduce the chances of the Russians or Chinese listening in on the call. From a security point of view…[i]t should have been just himself, Zelensky and no one else….

It’s crimes all the way down in Trumpworld, and nothing here exonerates Trump or his cronies. Everyone knows it - even the GOP. But the GOP continues to back Trump because the base is Trump’s know nothing extremist core.

I saw a piece in Talking Points Memo that brought home what these crimes mean:

U.S. Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch was holding an event to honor a murdered Ukrainian anti-corruption activists when she received the call from Washington that President Trump had booted her from her post.

Yovanovitch told the House impeachment inquiry on Friday that she was holding an event in honor of Kateryna Handziuk, an activist who died last year after being doused in sulfuric acid.
[…]
The corrupt circumstances that led to Yovanovitch’s removal show a stark contrast with the painful demise of Handziuk.

The article further ties this to Trumpworld, by including this part about Yuriy Lutsenko, who was a main contributor to Giuliani’s Ukraine scheme:

The attack came as many anti-corruption activists in Ukraine faced violent attacks. When asked about the spate of violence in September 2018, none other than then-prosecutor general Yuriy Lutsenko blamed the activists themselves for “total hatred of the authorities” and for “stirring up society.”

None of it is normal. Watergate wasn’t normal either - most people, including politicians, aren’t criminals. Trumpers will seize upon any excuse to absolve their tribe, especially ‘everyone does it’.

The notion of “no-go zones” in NYC is very, very, VERY out-of-date. Our crime rate has gone down every year for 25 years. It’s now the lowest of all American cities with a population over 500,000.

In the late 80’s/early 90’s there was more than 2000 murders a year; for the last 5 years, it’s been less than 300. South Bronx, Times Square, Alphabet City, all the used-to-be dangerous places, are now super-bougie gentrified places where buying an apartment is close to $1000 per square foot.

I assume Zelensky grew up looking to the US as a model. Trump? Trump’s never been interested than the Presidency other than a tool to push his own interests. And I’m glad this is finally coming out. I imagine Kyiv was a little reluctant to admit there was anxiety about the pressure because of how volatile Trump is and of course Putin too.

- so volker ‘may’ have lied to congress (yeah he did)
- sondland tried lying and also got exposed. he either re-re-corrects the record or goess 5th amendment
- trump, well we know about him

they thought if they lied, that would be it, no one would dig, or find out.
they were wrong. and naive

no wonder trump wont let any of the big players testify - they would either lie (with the house likely already knowing the answers) or their true testimony would uncover everything and bring it all down

BREAKING: SCOTUS issues temporary stay in Trump v. Mazars, keeping the president’s tax returns private for now. House Dems have till Nov. 21st to respond.

I am afraid that Trump is going to prevail on this because SCOTUS knows that releasing his returns would be political poison for the whole GOP.

re: #160 Jay C

I’ve always found it funny when people try to make scientific sense of ‘miracles’ in the bible, whether it’s “What if one of God’s days is really just a billion years” to “If you put water in a wineskin that’s held red wine, it will pick up color from the residue” to “Maybe Jesus was born through parthenogenesis?”

How about “Mary had it off with some other guy and told Joseph it was the Almighty”?

A woman who lived in Cape Cod,
Claimed her child had been fathered by God.
But ‘twas not The Almighty
Who lifted her nightie,
It was Roger, the lodger, by God!
