So, he’s admitting that his old busted press team was awful and this new one will do somehow better, despite being just as awful and incompetent and unqualified as the last one.

[
since Friday night, Trump has:

- fired the IC IG who reported the Ukraine whistleblower complaint

- maligned the HHS IG for reviewing hospitals’ COVID needs

- removed the IG overseeing the $2T coronavirus package.

which means he is free to dip into it to save his money-losing businesses

But seriously, how the fuck are you expecting someone to provide a useful answer about what the transition would look like when I would argue that predictions about what next month is going to look like are incredibly difficult to make? I’m pretty sure there’s probably several different plans under consideration but they’ll depend on what the reality is at that point.

I can’t plan for next week. We have no clue what it will look like in January next year. The Republican governors could repond to Trump stating that the virus has been conquered next month by overriding all of the local authorities, initiating a new wave of infections. They could decide that Trump doesn’t know what he’s talking about and keep things in place. We don’t know.

re: #30 Joe Bacon 🌹

I dunno about that one.

This was always going to be a pandemic, even if we’d isolated everyone arriving from international destinations INCLUDING AMERICAN CITIZENS for three weeks under armed guard.

We’d just possibly have all been wearing masks sooner and if distancing worked, we might have been able to fill half to 2/3 of public spaces (though likely without public toilets, since the virus secondarily transmits down below) and transportation safely instead of having to be locked down for an extended period. But the vaccine wouldn’t be coming any sooner because Emperor Xi did attempt a cover-up and thus we couldn’t have known much sooner there was anything we needed to try to develop a vaccine for; we just need to find a way to get the Right to stop blaming every person of Asian ancestry for it and thus adding them to the list of “minorities to exterminate”.

And in the meantime we’d still need distancing for the duration and full home confinement during flare-ups.

Plus, there would be no way to prevent her becoming a one-term president [we’d have possibly avoided 1929, but 2008 is still a given worldwide] and I was already terrified in 2015 that the next Republican president the country elected would be the last president all 50 states would be permitted to elect.

Nothing has changed that feeling, and of course, Bernie decided to run, when we already had a warning from some of his supporters who’d held their nose for Clinton, that this time they wouldn’t be willing to do so if they thought he was cheated again—and that the only possible way for anyone other than St. Bernard to be nominated was if he was cheated again.

The problem is, they have plenty of foes who’ll never vote for Bernie, and I’m terrified that both camps number sufficiently to prevent the other’s candidate from winning the General.

I am so terrified right now it’s not funny. And I will always be incensed that Bernie announced, and even more so that a fucking heart attack wasn’t enough to get him to withdraw when his supporters still might have actually heeded his call to vote for a real Dem when we nominated them.

Oh, of course not.

Watching folks on the left on Twitter today is just making me grouchy. Sure, there’s the awfulness in WI but Biden said something that wasn’t perfectly clear, why aren’t we jumping all over him for that?!?!?! And also gotta make sure the sexual assault allegations continue to be spread, because the level of nuance required to push back against those on the left is more than easily fits into a Twitter discussion. The bulwark

Trump, April 4: We’re just hearing really positive stories, and we’re continuing to collect the data. But I’ll just speak for myself: It’s been out for a long time. It’s a malaria drug. It’s also a drug for lupus. And there’s a — there’s a study out that people with lupus aren’t catching this horrible virus. They’re not — they’re not affected so much by it. Now, maybe that’s correct; maybe it’s false. You’re going to have to check it out.

The international alliance was formed to “help guide rheumatology clinicians in assessing and treating patients with rheumatologic disease.” The alliance — which is supported by the Lupus Foundation of America, Lupus Research Alliance and the American College of Rheumatology — has called on clinicians to report “all cases of COVID-19 in rheumatology patients, including those with mild or no symptoms.”

As of April 2, the group had information on 110 validated patients: 36% with rheumatoid arthritis, 17% with psoriatic arthritis and 17% with systemic lupus erythematosus, or lupus, an autoimmune disease.

“One frequently asked question: over 25% of patients who developed a COVID-19 were on HCQ at the time of diagnosis,” the group said in a tweet thread on April 2, referring to hydroxychloroquine.

“Based on early data currently available in our registry, we are not able to report any evidence of a protective effect from hydroxychloroquine against COVID-19,”

EMT and Paramedics in New York City are now under orders that if someone over 18 has gone into cardiac arrest they should try to revive them on the scene for up to 20 minutes. If they don’t succeed they cannot take them to an emergency room.

Not a good thing, but a cardiac arrest case outside a hospital, especially if the patient couldn’t be resuscitated in 20 minutes, has almost no chance of surviving. And even if they’re breathing again, and not in a persistent vegetative state, they’re not likely to have any meaningful quality of life.

Why yes, I do have a DNR on file.

I think a lot of the models are already taking that into account. Not every megachurch is going to meet. Churches in Rockwall aren’t meeting physically, just online.

I’m not sure how they could plausibly account for it, although they are smart folks. You know for certain a bunch of idiots in Florida, at the very least, are going to be nuts to butts in the pews just to prove a point. And there are something like 14 states with specific exemptions to stay at home orders for religious services.

As we know here, the projections make very clear that they are based on social distancing orders being in place through the end of May. I just hope that this has been baked into their numbers—and maybe church services and other lunacy contribute to the upper limit of the projection.

It’s no mystery why the GOP forced the WI primary to happen in the midst of a pandemic.

They know GOP voters are very likely to disbelieve in COVID-19, and will turn out to vote when Dem voters won’t.

Sure, some will die. Small price to pay to keep the GOP in power.

Seems they might not have thought that all the way through to the general.

Just want to give a shout out to my late grandfather. He was a WWII Navy vet who served in the civilian government for 40 years after the war ended.

From a young age he taught me about politics and civics and the importance of being educated and informed about what is going on around us. He watched election results almost every year without fail and I remember watching them with him many times, asking all kinds of questions to which my young self did not know the answer. He always took time to explain things to me, telling me not only how they worked but why they were important.

When I became an adult and stayed politically engaged and educated, he was so proud of me.

I miss you so damned much, old man.

By the way, which one of you libtard bastards got me watching Dark Shadows again? I’ve made it to the costume party where they are in the process of having a seance. One of the ugliest parts of the Obama era and of course Trump himself is King Birther.

If I were Crozier I’d just resign my commission rather than accept reinstatement from a flagrantly hypocritical President who has already publicly condemned my earnest letter.

But that’s probably not going to happen for the same reason that I, someone who never served, thinks it’s a good idea.

The most attractive option for him might just be to take a post COVID-19 infection medical retirement.

The GOP is in some kind of perverse Highlander situation (“there can be only one”) with respect to being a Trump-like gaping asshole 24/7. Trump is pure Teflon for that shit, while any other Republican that does the same has a good chance of getting in trouble.

This is how we can tell the GOP cult is monotheistic rather than polytheistic.

I said last thread that I would report on voting in Milwaukee when I got home.

Total time from when I parked my car to when I got back to it—approximately 2 hours.

Overall, the city has done about as well with the situation as they could. The line when I was there was about a half-mile long, but moving fairly well. The cops had blocked off some of the side streets around the school for reasons that I did not quite understand.

Painters tape lines were 6’ apart on the sidewalks and in the school so we could easily maintain our distances. Inside, one woman, quite possibly selected for her ability to project her voice, made sure everyone was aware that they should be standing on the blue lines. National Guardsmen were walking up and down the line making sure that everyone was registered to vote, at their correct polling station and knew which ward they lived in. The unregistered got a separate, shorter, line to stand in. One guardsman was at the end of the line handing out the voter numbers.

One thing that I totally approved of—handicapped people got a different line, basically letting them cut in front of everyone else. I would much rather wait half-an-hour extra than disenfranchise someone unable to stand for the duration.

It looked like about 80% of the people were wearing masks of some type.

Illinois c19 stats
Tuesday 4/7 68,732 tested (5790 new), 13,549 positive (1,287 new), 380 deaths (10 new)

That’s much smaller on the death increase, and the largest number tested so far. New positives is staying well up there, unfortunately.

My nearest county (1 over) is going up in new cases about 1 a day, although no one new has died.

Of course Trump will be a superstar in the eyes of his cultists this November. Nothing can change that.

But that’s irrelevant. The path to a D victory in November never relied on converting even a single Trump cultist. That path is via D turnout and (regrettably) the mushy middle in purple states.

The US, France, Belgium, Brazil, Sweden… all reporting new highs in daily deaths from Covid-19.

So now we’re in the thick of things. Of course Trump and his sycophants will jump on any decrease in cases as a reason to let up on the shutdowns.

But looking at what has happened in Italy and Spain, it will be several weeks after the peaks until the case load and hospital loads get low enough to not be of great concern.

BTW, here in California where the Bay area counties locked down early and the whole state locked down ahead of most others, our per capital cases and deaths are now below that of many states.

Prevention is the best medicine.

It’s expected that Gov. Wilmer will extend Michigan’s “Stay Home, Stay safe” executive order through the end of the month (it was to expire next Monday).

Yet we have some folks in this state for whom such an action is affront:

James LoTempio, 51, of Delta Township near Lansing, was among about 30 demonstrators outside the Capitol Tuesday, calling for getting Michigan back to normal as soon as possible. Most of them were connected with a Facebook group called Michigan United for Liberty.

“There’s got to be a balance between protecting us and taking away our rights,” said LoTempio, a disabled veteran who used to fly drones for the U.S. Navy.

“People are out of work, and we can’t sustain that,” he said. “People are out of work and losing their homes.”

The governor “wants to keep that going.”

LoTempio said his wife lost her job as a school employee at a juvenile home near Eaton Rapids.

Seems to me that I’d be in favor of a document signed by those who refuse to abide by the state’s quarantine order whereby they sign away any right to any and all state assistance (including healthcare)….

Everything about this whole mess sounds like it was a response to Trump outbursts.

I’ve no doubt that Modly first yanked Crozier because he got a nasty call from the WH to “fire” the man responsible for the letter in the first place. Why? Make up an excuse, say he violated “national security,” just get him off the ship and replace him with somebody “loyal.” Modly complies and then overcompensates by pinning the “leak” on Crozier, but Trump takes his cue and declares the captain made the US look “weak.”

Then Modly gets informed about the video of crew cheering and applauding Crozier as he disembarks, just before he gets another nasty call from the WH about how he fucked up because the media now sees the captain as a martyr rather than a criminal. Now Modly’s pissed, this was all supposed to be over and done with, so he flies straight to Guam in a huff to rant at the crew. But not just any rant, the rant of a mid-level manager who’s been told to get out there and break up talk among the workers of unionizing. So he slags Crozier, he gives the crew the “remember who signs your paycheck” bit, and then ends off on whining about how everybody’s being so mean to him.

Gets back to D.C., arriving just in time to find out that his “private” speech to the crew is now all over the internet. And the boss is saying that he may get “involved” in the investigation. And then that phone call from the WH comes…

Nah, the call was to tell him that he could forget that nomination. He wasn’t fired outright, just told that he wasn’t getting that promotion he figured he’d earned. And so he’s quitting instead of getting to work one day to find his stuff in a box and a new guy measuring the office for drapes.

He’s going to get 40% of the national popular vote; Biden is going to get 40%. That’s simply the floor in a two person race. The question is the remaining 20%. I seriously doubt we’re going to see nearly 6% voting for a third party candidate (for the record, that’s the highest third party vote since 1996). It’ll probably be closer to the traditional 1-2%. So, that leaves about 18-19% of the electorate potentially “up for grabs.” We also know that incumbent presidents end up with a percentage of the vote fairly close to their approval rating at election time.

Trump’s approval rating has spiked a bit (but seems to be dropping off already) due to the pandemic (rally around the flag, I suspect). But he’s been pretty consistently in the low 40s for much of the last two years - and before the midterms was under 40%.

I think he’s as close to an underdog any incumbent has been since at least Carter.

re: #262 goddamnedfrank

He’s also declining psychologically and there are a lot of shoes left to drop, along with tens of thousands more American bodies.

For instance, I don’t see how the ratings agencies can avoid downgrading the US credit outlook before the election, with such massive added debt piled on top of revenue cuts.

What happens to the residential real estate market when that hits simultaneously with a glut of houses needing to be sold because their former owners died? What happens to the already moribund commercial real estate market when a ton of small businesses fold, unable to fulfill their leases?

And also the majority of the American people have not seen the yin and yang difference between how Biden has responded to it and how Trump has. The American people aren’t going to go with the guy who rated himself a 10 on his handling of this over a guy who has and will continue to show empathy to people who have lost their loved ones. I get why people are worried after what happened in 2016 but I said it three years ago and I’ll say it again, I genuinely believe that Trump is more beatable as an incumbent than a challenger because he can’t hide behind being an empty slate.

This is so disheartening. This is why I will never vote Republican — even for the “good ones” like Governor Hogan. They do too much anti-democratic nonsense like this with complete disregard for their fellow citizens. I feel so sorry for that young lady and others who are risking their health to vote in Wisconsin today.

Yeah I don’t hate Hogan but I want his party to be d-e-a-d and never come back after this.

‘84 was a landslide 58.8-40.6 for Reagan
‘80 was close to a landslide 50.7-41-6.6 (probably would have been worse if Anderson wasn’t on the ballot)
‘72 was 60.7-37.5 for Nixon (which just makes Watergate look even stupider in context)
‘64 was 61.1-38.5 for LBJ

I don’t think it’ll be that bad. But something like 2008 - 53-45 with Trump failing to break 200 in the electoral college seems plausible.

And much like ‘08, they’ll insist that it’s not a “mandate” because it wasn’t a “landslide,” claiming that Biden won not because of what he ran on but because the country was displeased with Trump. And so he needs to “reach out” to Congressional Republicans or else be deemed “divisive.”

So there have been some discussion aired on Twitter at least that the MLB is looking into the possibility of holding games in empty stadiums down in Arizona. This tweet springboards off of that but also refers to some of the issues with the current COVID-19 tests, namely that a negative doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re clear:

Yeah as a MLB fan, I saw that. It’s definitely somewhat complicated by the fact that you have the minor leaguers too as well as the fact that I think this is the last year of the current CBA or that’s coming up soon and tehre are some issues of contention between owners and players.

The 5th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Tuesday to uphold a temporary ban on abortions in Texas, which Gov. Greg Abbott (R) enacted March 22.

A lawsuit brought by the state’s abortion providers had reversed that decision and led a district court to grant emergency access to “time-sensitive” abortion care. But a 2 to 1 decision by the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals’ three-judge panel has now backed Abbott’s executive order. This is one of a handful of legal battles boiling nationwide concerning abortions during the coronavirus pandemic.

If we manage to limit the deaths to 81k by Aug. 4th, it will be fucking nauseating to see the toxic mix of a victory lap and “we told you it wasn’t that bad” from Trump and right wing mouth breathers. Particularly given that Trump has led from waaaaay from behind and we’d be wholly fucked if it weren’t for blue state governors.

We’ll be lucky if it’s that low in two weeks.

Running theory is that Donny is gonna try to play “hero” by having Modly “resign” and then reinstating Crozier.

Not going to happen Capt. Crozier embarrassed him and will stay fired. Modly has also now embarrassed him and will also be fired (asked to resign). His non-apology was only the first step.

Jack’s still a shithead techbro for letting racists, bigots, and political psyops agents (foreign and domestic) stay on Twitter.

The enemy of my enemy is still not my friend.

He’s also trying to gather sympathy for donating himself down to only 3.5 billion to live on,

And for the same reason car dealers stock their lots with vehicles that are loaded down with options - the profit margins are better.

Unisys had two mainframes: the U-series (Univac) and A-series (Burroughs Large Systems) - I take it you had a Unisys U box?

Yes, 2200. They were good, stable systems.

The total WHO budget 2018-2019 was around 4 billion dollars (the budget is done over 2 year periods). The US payed about 59 million a year.

So the US contribution is about 3%.

(These numbers are silly because only about 20% of the budget is paid by the member states, the other 80% is from voluntary contrubutions! I can’t find the full figures but it appears that Bill and Melinda Gates are paying more the the WHO than the American government is).
