Haven’t heard at all from fishfolk or any of my conservative friends on this yet. I have no doubt I’ll get an earful from my best friend on Saturday (it’s his birthday and we’re cautiously gathering a small group of friends). If he even starts in with “antifa in disguise” or any of that bullshit, and I KNOW he will, he will get kicked out of my car. At speed.

I believe that there are THOUSANDS of actual traitors in the Republican Party and affiliated gangs. They have afflicted this country too long. They are a major factor in the failure to contain the Covid epidemic. They should be hunted down and eradicated completely.

Careful with that rhetoric. We are not them. We do not indiscriminately round up people.

What we do is what Merrick Garland did when chasing down the network that enabled Timothy McVeigh. Which is why I’m kinda glad he’s in charge of DoJ going forward.

Time for consequences and accountability, who have long been restless on the sidelines, to get into the game.

Pence is really pissed at Cheeto, since the Q-balls actually got close to murdering him. McConnell is also pissed, since he blames Cheeto for the Georgia senate debacle and the loss of his personal power. With both on board, impeachment should be a slam dunk, with Trump barred forever from federal service. We can survive 12 days of Pence a lot better than we can 12 more days of the orange maniac.

I agree. Articles of Impeachment should be voted on in the House today. I don’t care that GOP Senators in the Senate won’t vote for removal. The House has the power of impeachment, and the circumstances of yesterday require the House to exercise that check on an Executive that has run a muck.

I said nothing about an indiscriminate roundup. Don’t put words in my mouth. I am talking about people against whom actual evidence can be found and regular prosecution initiated. I agree that the McVeigh network is a good example, and I think the current networks can be un-unraveled in the same way, but on a gigantically larger scale.

Correct. The 25th Amendment is intended to give the government a safeguard in case a President has a legitimate mental and/or physical breakdown requiring a hand-off of power to the Vice President. Once the term ends, he is free to go as a former President of the United States, with all the rights and benefits thereby conferred.

He only did the right thing yesterday because he couldn’t do anything else.

He could have tried to go full Q-nutter. We both know it wouldn’t have had any effect, but he could’ve tried. He even had an excuse; people were threatening to end his life because he didn’t try. He didn’t. I will credit him for that, for sticking to the rules even with a (metaphorical, but almost literal) gun to his head, one time. That’s all. The rest of his political career has been a complete and utter boot-licking shitshow, and he will die a lonely and forgotten man.

Trump MUST go down in the history books as the only president who has been impeached twice.

it isn’t even so much that it leads to expulsion in the senate. it’s that the senate has to actually go on record, after impeachment in the House, as to which members finally believe Trump needs to go. Well, “unfit” isn’t that broad, is it?

Has s/he had a stroke serious enough to prevent her/im from physically carrying out the duties of the Prez, at least temporarily? No?

Has the Prez been found to have an aortic defect that requires emergency surgery and recovery that will last at least 24-hours requiring the Veep to step in? No?

Has the Prez decided that s/he is just not up to the job or just doesn’t want to do it anymore, a la the penultimate Pope? No?

I can see the 25th being invoked in any of those cases, either as a temp or a permanent fix.

But if none of those are true, and the Prez doesn’t want to leave, we are pretty much stuck with her/im unless his Cabinet chucks her/im out, which would require them to decide he is *mentally* unfit to continue. Which would mean they would have to say he’s not sane.

Ashli Babbitt was a decorated Air Force veteran addicted to Fox News, InfoWars, and QAnon. She was killed while rioting at the Capitol yesterday. What did she get for her service to Q? Fellow travelers are calling her death a “false flag,” of course.

Schrödinger’s terrorist/patriot. Depends on the thread.

An unarmed woman shot by police. Even though they usually find it okay when police shoot other unarmed persons.

Another note: shooting an unarmed person at a traffic stop or even an unarmed protestor at an open public demonstration is an entirely different threshold of police violence compared to confronting an armed mob attempting to storm the US Congress Building while Congress is in session

I think of the three scenarios (25th, impeachment, self-pardon), I think the third is the likeliest. I’d even propose a fourth, which is the one that’s been discussed in the past: Trump resigns just before the inauguration and Pence issues a pardon as part of the bargain.

There’s no damn way Pence will pardon Trump now. There was a chance earlier, but after this week, Trump despises Pence and has made no secret of it, and Pence, while he isn’t willing to take calls on the 25th Amendment, is not about to give Trump a free pass.

January 6, 2021 was a black, bleak day for America. A double defeat in Georgia. Once again an election stolen by fake mail in ballots. January 7, 2021 the electoral college certified Mr. Biden in as the new president elect. Another, black, bleak day for America. What will happen to our beloved America? Dear God please help our great country. Dear God please protect President Trump, his family and all of his supporters.

NO SMOCKING GUN!  Jan 7, 2021 • 12:43:26pm

re: #191 austin_blue

And that couldn’t help a Civil or Criminal prosecution.

Insanity is a very specific legal defense to criminal charges, and isn’t the same thing as being incapacitated for purposes of the 25th Amendment, which hasn’t been carefully defined because there has been no need to do so.

Agreed, which is why I expect self-pardon to be the path forward for Donny. There’s virtually no chance that Repubs will allow themselves to be seen as responsible for knifing him in the back at the last hour. And I should clarify that impeachment is a very real possibility, but Mitch isn’t going to allow it to progress past that and finding 67 votes even in a party that’s livid after yesterday is like looking for a virgin in a brothel.

re: #214 Belafon

From Jim Wright

The Election is certified valid at all levels.

Thus, ANY federal agency refusing to IMMEDIATELY and fully comply with the orderly transition of power to Joe Biden and his administration MUST be investigated and those responsible tried for sedition and insurrection up to and including the current shitbag President of the United States.

I don’t give a damn if it’s a Cabinet Secretary or a some lowly supply gofer who hid the toner cartridges, if they’re dragging their feet or impeding transfer of power in even the slightest manner, they need to have the hammer dropped on their goddamn heads to the maximum extent allowed by law, up to and including long, long prison sentences at hard labor.

I mostly especially include the goddamned generals in this as well.

Any attitude, ANY reluctance, any foot dragging or bureaucratic bullshit that these Pentagon fuckers are so damn good at, anything other than full, immediate compliance and an enthusiastic YES, SIR! in support of the civilian transfer of power, so much as a roll of the eyes, should result in an immediate court martial and prison. These sons of bitches need to be brought firmly to heel. They need to start leading by PERSONAL example or be removed from the service. NO EXCEPTIONS.

So long as I’m on this subject, if you insist on the title “General” or “Admiral” or “Colonel” or “Captain” after you’ve left or retired from service, then you should be held to the full laws and authority of the UCMJ. I.e. if you insist on calling yourself GENERAL Flynn, then you should be held accountable under the full obligations of that title. Or don’t use it, ever.

Any member of the government, in uniform or out, who puts ideology and political party above duty, the law, and their oath needs to be purged from service without mercy or delay.

A whole lot of Western intelligence agents were at the head of the line when protestors stormed the East German Stasi headquarters after the wall fell, with very specific targets. So, you would expect hostile intelligence agencies to at least try. I’d guess there would be at least one or two MAGAt rioters that nobody knew and never said anything, who made a beeline to specific offices. They have to consider the whole Capitol compromised.

The election has to be certified, which shouldn’t take long, since they both won by a big enough margin not to trigger an automatic recount. It only works in states with large minority populations and growing urban centers with educated populations. The GOP has a death grip on the declining, heavily white, uneducated rural states. But Texas is coming into our sights, and if we can turn Texas blue, that’s a death sentence for the GOP.

Precisely. The entire intent was to ensure that Trump remained as President and to prevent the orderly transfer of power. Heather Heyer can’t be reached for comment.

And yes, I know Walsh’s point is that the cops themselves didn’t kill BLM protesters (*citation needed*), but the cops were gladhanding with Rittenhouse and let him walk right on by after killing people.

It also glosses over the fact that the Capitol Hill police opened the gates for the insurrectionists to enter the building. It also glosses over that the Capitol resembled a scene from V for Vendetta in anticipation of BLM protests, while security yesterday was at a level whose most charitable explanation involves Hanlon’s Razor. It glosses over the fact that cops were taking selfies with insurrectionists inside the building and that the vast majority of people were simply allowed to walk away.

Last but not least, no BLM protesters were armed and invading a federal building. I still don’t fully know the circumstances of the shooting, but she was in the midst of an armed incursion into the Capitol building. That’s the kind of shit causes LEO to start firing. A fair chunk of time, BLM protesters were getting run down, beaten, maced, etc. by police with tactical gear. People aren’t always going to sit back and take a boot to the chest.

Sure, if Trump actually gets his powers removed. The 25th is useless because to get that started a majority of Trump’s cabinet has to move against Trump.

That isn’t happening because they are also Trumpist criminals and/or have made themselves unavailable precisely because of this.

We need her in the national DNC chair, really, but she’ll be useful and powerful wherever she goes.

One of the arguments that Lincoln Project made for not working within the national DNC is that it takes to long to get anything done. On their own, they could have an ad out slamming a politician before s/he was even done with their speech. I think that one of the reason’s that Stacey has been so effective is that she can call the shots without having to deal with a huge bureaucracy. I wish her well for whatever office she wants to run for, but I hope she doesn’t become anything more than a well-heeded consultant for the DNC. Fair Fight can go national on it’s own.

Not that I know of, but they are a private citizen and can be charged with crimes like any other citizen, and guess what: That includes crimes committed in office for which the statute of limitations has not yet run out.

they would presumably have to be impeached because otherwise I have no idea how they aren’t entitled to a library, secret service protection, a pension, etc.
