Yeah, Mitch, but that was before you spent the last four years breaking and blowing up the system. You reap what you sow.

McConnell was blowing up the system once the Senate Democrats lost their filibuster-proof majority in early 2010 — so for almost 11 years. He obstructed everything possible while in the minority; he became the Majority Leader in 2014, giving him 6 years in the position. He is a monster, who, unlike Trump, is knowledgeable about the law and will do anything possible to win — including changing the rules when they benefit him.

I think it reasonable to assume that any other Republican Senate majority or minority leader in the 21st century would have been just as awful as McConnell.

IMO he’s a generic Republican in a very powerful position.

By comparison, selling alcohol to a minor (intentionally or accidentally) is only a class A misdemeanor, the penalty for which is up to a year in jail and/or $1,000 fine.

One of my favorite parodies, written by Mark Twain in 1900 to express his disgust with the Philippine-American War and the headlong rush into imperialism. It was not published until 1958. The original Battle Hymn was the quintessentially Republican anthem of its age. This one fits the GOP of a later era, and of our present one as well.

The Battle Hymn of the Republic, Updated

Mine eyes have seen the orgy of the launching of the Sword;
He is searching out the hoardings where the stranger’s wealth is stored;
He hath loosed his fateful lightnings, and with woe and death has scored;
His lust is marching on.

I have seen him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps;
They have builded him an altar in the Eastern dews and damps;
I have read his doomful mission by the dim and flaring lamps—
His night is marching on.

I have read his bandit gospel writ in burnished rows of steel:
“As ye deal with my pretensions, so with you my wrath shall deal;
Let the faithless son of Freedom crush the patriot with his heel;
Lo, Greed is marching on!”

We have legalized the strumpet and are guarding her retreat;*
Greed is seeking out commercial souls before his judgement seat;
O, be swift, ye clods, to answer him! be jubilant my feet!
Our god is marching on!

In a sordid slime harmonious Greed was born in yonder ditch,
With a longing in his bosom—and for others’ goods an itch.
As Christ died to make men holy, let men die to make us rich—
Our god is marching on.

I’d say the reason selling weed to a minor right now is only a misdemeanor is because it’s an “enhancer,” something that a cop or prosecutor tacks on to the sale of marijuana (already a felony). And the reason it’s being bumped up to a felony now is a gimme to the NYPD, who otherwise would have to go after dealers for petty shit like “failure to pay taxes on sales” or “selling without a license.” So they’ll just change their tactics, sending out rookie cops who haven’t hit their 21st birthday in plain clothes to drag in dealers for “selling to a minor.”

Not a good idea relying on a translated paraphrase of what was said, with no context.

What this is about is the report that Macron commissioned Benjamin Stora to write. Stora himself said: “La repentance est un piège politique, tendu par une partie de l’extrême-droite française” (Repentence is a political trap, held out by a part of the French extreme right).

I posted yesterday that NPR was doing yet another “what do folks in rural Red America think” reports this morning. It was exactly what you’d expect—diner in one of the most conservative parts of conservative Idaho. The first few wouldn’t talk because NPR is “fake news.” Those that did? The reporter had this to say “just as four years ago Democrats believed that Facebook threw the election to Trump, Trump voters now believe the election was stolen from Trump in 2020.” I have never done this before, but I’m going to have to call NPR. It’s way to late for this horseshit.

I agree that we need a discussion of the role of Monopoly players like FB and Twitter in our public and political discourse, but they are still privately owned entities.

They are not allowed to discriminate based on gender, race, religion or sexual orientation but they are allowed to block people based on subjective (and not always consistently enforced) Terms of Service.

This nutjob claimed that he was unable to enter the Naval Academy because of injury that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Only problem is that he was rejected before the injury. He was never going to the Academy. That’s a lie.

Then he touts that he’s some world class athlete and will participate in various races and set world records. Those actually in the sport have no clue what he’s talking about because he’s never once participated in any qualifying race or event where they actually do measure these things. Those in the sport consider him a joke because of his insane claims on Instagram.

The more he lies, the more attention he gets.

re: #106 Belafon

Great article. The end was especially important.

The two most important things we need to emphasize are that the vaccine can’t give anyone the coronavirus and that protection is not immediate. But beyond that, we need to emphasize that for those of us who had symptoms substantial enough to disrupt our normal activities, contracting COVID-19 itself would likely have been far worse. Even in what are considered “mild cases” of COVID-19, fever and cough can last for days and weeks, causing missed work and prolonged suffering. In moderate and severe cases, the need for oxygen, intensive care, and intubation can cause disability for months, and maybe longer. As we all know, critical cases can be fatal. The upshot is that if you didn’t like some of the symptoms caused by the coronavirus vaccine, be very glad you never had to experience the virus itself.

I’ve been concerned about giving initial vaccines to very old people for exactly what he said, a 95 year old person is statistically more likely to die from natural causes than a 40 or 60 year old, and those deaths would be seen by many as a result of the vaccine. I get the why, but I still think this wasn’t a good plan.

About half of all Covid deaths are people over 80. Them and their caregivers have to be given priority. It is unfortunate that unprincipled anti-vaccers will exploit that to sow distrust, but they would find a young person with an adverse reaction and do so anyway. In fact, they already have.

My wife was off work for a month or so after getting COVID-19. When she got back to work she found that 20 of the residents in the care home where she works were dead.

The vaccine would have saved most of them.

She’s used to a couple of deaths a month. But 20? I don’t think letting 20 people die just because you’re worried about how it might be “seen” is defensible.

So, the panic of seeing people die after they receive the vaccine causes an additional 10% of the population to refuse to get the vaccine, which means we don’t reach the herd immunity that would help save more lives. Like any vaccine, it won’t protect you in all cases, which means that if we don’t get it to enough people, older people will still be vulnerable even if they get the vaccine.

Not “seen”, unexplained. And please don’t get me wrong, I’m not in any way saying they shouldn’t be getting the vaccine. I completely understand the why. But without explanation, this will scare off how many others from taking the vaccine which is counterproductive to the Nth degree.

My SIL works in a rather large LTC facility. I know the carnage LTC facilities are facing. She’s the only one working there who has yet to get COVID. She’s gotten her first dose so she’s not yet out of the woods.

Again, please don’t misconstrue my comment as wanting a bunch of old people to die because that’s in no way what I was saying or meaning.

I will have to go find the article later, but on a panel set up to discuss how the vaccine should be distributed, the one person who voted against giving it to the elderly first was the one person who studied the effect of viruses on the elderly, and she was opposed specifically because most people don’t understand correlation vs causation.

“February” is only 10 days away. If all the players stick to the normal trial procedures, it would take about that long to get all the paperwork in order anyway.
Though Sen, Schumer ought to make it quite clear that they ARE following procedure, and undercut the GOP idiots in his own Chamber (like Ron Johnson) who have decided to deal with Trump’s second Impeachment by whining away about its “unConstutionality”.

The thing is, the anti-vaccers are going to sow distrust, no matter what we do. It only takes one younger person displaying Covid symptoms after getting vaccinated, which has already happened. So we might as well vaccinate the highest risk group, instead of engaging in a futile effort to keep people from being duped by anti-vaccers.

154
stpaulbear  Jan 22, 2021 • 7:47:13am

Every house legislator that refuses or fails a metal detector test should immediately be assigned a fully vaccinated, tazer-armed capitol security guard to accompany them every moment that they’re in the chamber. Fines aren’t going to matter because there are groups that will cover the cost of the fines. They need to be publicly humiliated, if they are even capable of humiliation. We need to find out how to humiliate them (hello Lincoln Project). They need to be treated like prisoners appearing in court if they refuse or fail the detector test.

Which I read as “giving initial vaccines to very old people … wasn’t a good plan”.

Well actually the first vaccines were given to thousands of volunteers in the vaccine trials, mostly young and fit. Some of them died (from causes that were nothing to do with the vaccine).

But for the roll out to the general public giving it to the people who are most likely to die from COVID-19 is is a good plan. It’s the only defensible plan.

Obviously it needs to be accompanied by education, like any vaccine or medicine roll-out. But trying to hide accidental deaths just because you’re worried about the optics is not a good idea.

I’m not worried about the anti-vaxxers. It’s the people who get the news from headlines and evening news clips that I’m worried about. It’s the people like the mom of a friend of my son’s who doesn’t trust the way the vaccine was made, and that it was rushed.

All I know about it is Swedish meatballs.

I always thought it was another Star Trek spin-off until I learned otherwise.

It’s also a good cautionary tale about Fascism. And some nice monologues and dialogues:

“Every day, here and at home, we are warned about the enemy. But who is the enemy? Is it the alien? Well, we are all alien to one another. Is it the one who believes differently than we do? No, oh no, my friends. The enemy is fear. The enemy is ignorance. The enemy is the one who tells you that you must hate that which is different. Because, in the end, that hate will turn on you. And that same hate will destroy you.”

New Jersey ‘dating specialist’ facing charges for storming Capitol after online boasts

According to a report from NBC News, a 32-year-old “dating and relationship strategist” from New Jersey has been charged with taking part in the Jan. 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol after boasting about it — and posting videos — on his social media accounts.

Patrick Stedman has been changed with one of unlawful entry of a restricted building and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds in a complaint filed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia.

Stedman’s downfall came about after comments he made online led friends from high school and college to report him to the FBI.

Math geek here. The formula for calculating how many more impeachments is x/y where x=# of times Trump has been impeached and y=# of times somebody else has been impeached.

So using this formula, Trump has been impeached TWICE as many times as Bill Clinton but INFINITY as many times as Obama.

So, I’m here watching people on Twitter lose their fucking minds at every twist and turn of the governing agreement in the Senate, and complaining at every little utterance about Schumer and how McConnell is running things even now in the minority.

The reality: Schumer’s going to be controlling what happens, and he’s letting McConnell be his usual obstructionist self to nuke the filibuster.

Schumer’s already moving towards the impeachment trial as the articles of impeachment are going to get delivered to the Senate, which kicks off the trial.

GOPer caterwauling will never stop, so it’s time to just twist the knife and force them to take positions. Back the incitement of an armed insurrection to overthrow the government or vote for Trump’s removal. A few might claim that the issue is moot, but McConnell’s delay was self-chosen to avoid having to act in the moment. Trump doesn’t get to benefit from that and there’s precedent to have a trial even after the person is no longer in office. There’s consensus among actual legal experts to hold the trial. There must be accountability, but the GOP wants none.

This is the same with all the chicanery around the National Guard - first in the delays to come secure the Capitol, and now with the directions to move out of the building to the parking lot and elsewhere and back again.

But for the GOP insurrectionist treasonweasels, these NatGuard wouldn’t even be needed in the first place. Trump and the treasonweasel caucus supported an armed insurrection and failed coup. That’s why they’re needed. Let’s get to bottom of why the orders were delayed, they were asked to move, and who incited the armed insurrection - all of which goes back to the trial in the Senate and prosecutions of those involved in the attack.

Abual-Ragheb is accused of knowingly entering or remaining in a restricted building or grounds without lawful authority, engaging in disorderly or disruptive conduct in a restricted building, and violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds.

Rasha Abual-Ragheb, who goes by Rasha Abu on Facebook, allegedly posted photos of herself on the social media platform following the riot in the Capitol on Jan. 6. She said she was pepper-sprayed and was exposed to tear gas, according to the FBI.
The Fairfield woman has been on the FBI’s radar before. She was interviewed by the FBI in November after Facebook and Telegram group chats with the New Jersey chapter of the American Patriot 3% under the name Rasha Abu, which was confirmed to be her Facebook page. The Southern Poverty Law Center classifies the American Patriot 3% as part of the anti-government militia movement.

President Biden has removed the Diet Coke button. When @ShippersUnbound and I interviewed Donald Trump in 2019, we became fascinated by what the little red button did. Eventually Trump pressed it, and a butler swiftly brought in a Diet Coke on a silver platter. It’s gone now.

One of the local gun stores has a “no masks allowed” sign, despite a local order requiring masks. Doesn’t that make anyone who enters without a mask no longer a “law abiding gun owner”?

“As the House prepares to send articles of impeachment to the Senate on Monday, CNN has learned that dozens of influential Republicans around Washington — including former top Trump administration officials — have been quietly lobbying GOP members of Congress to impeach and convict Donald Trump. The effort is not coordinated but reflects a wider battle inside the GOP between those loyal to Trump and those who want to sever ties and ensure he can never run for President again.”

“The lobbying started in the House after the January 6 attack on the Capitol and in the days leading up to impeachment. But it’s now more focused on Sen. Mitch McConnell, the powerful minority leader who has signaled he may support convicting Trump.”

The good part is that, even with the filibuster intact, judges can be confirmed and taxes raised on the wealthiest. And now that the Democrats should have access to Trump’s taxes, they can design a tax code that will do a better job at forcing the wealthiest to pay their fair share.
