GQP fear mongering about the debt when they are not in power is purely about trying to curtail programs to help people. Everytime they are in power, they enact massive defense spending hikes for contractors and huge tax cuts for the rich, all paid for with borrowed money.

Shot #2 in the books.
Appointment time: 9:30am
I parked around 8:47 two blocks from the Moscone center. Sat in the car listening to the Chauvin trial until 9:00.
Got to the Moscone Center at 9:05 - walked right in.
Got scanned….went downstairs.
Waited two minutes for an empty station and wound up sitting in the same seat as I got for my first shot.
9:25 my fifteen minutes post-shot wait was over and I was walking out.

Shot 1 I wore one of my Mexican shirts in order to think forward. Today the theme was Aloha.

White House Settles On Reconciliation For Infrastructure, SK Ashby
bobcesca.com

With the benefit of hindsight and a decade of separation in time, it’s very easy to say that President Obama made some strategic mistakes when he tried to pass his policy proposals, but that leaves a very large elephant in the room and I don’t mean the Republican party.

President Obama was held to entirely different standards than any other president because he was the first black president. The political press, lawmakers, and a larger share of the public viewed virtually all of Obama’s policies and rhetoric through a tinted lens that isn’t applied to President Biden. The fact is Biden is an old white man and most of the GOP’s racialized anti-government spending playbook won’t work on him.

Working hard to reestablish an open, professional relationship with the Beltway press corps, Psaki has perhaps done more than anyone in the administration — including Biden himself — in terms of changing the tone in our politics, and creating a new path forward towards a transparent form of government, in the wake of the Trump’s ransacking of the norms.

Breyer and Thomas basically represent the two sides of the Great Copyright Debate. People such as myself, and many in the free software world, agree with Breyer; copyrights, especially as they apply to software, should only have enough power to provide incentive to creators to create copyrightable works, and no more. In that vein, this ruling is a major landmark in that it marks the first time that the Court has agreed with such an interpretation, and done so very openly. Thomas, on the other hand, believes that copyrights themselves are a form of property, and should be treated as property - including protecting the ability to profit from that property, i.e. sue the ever-living daylights out of infringers for 100 years or more after the copyright was filed.

Britain and a number of other countries will fine an airline for carrying a foreign national to the UK if they don’t have the correct documents for entry (visa, right to enter etc.). I could well see Spain doing the same thing or at least sanctioning Ryanair if passengers from Britain turned up at the immigration counter at a Spanish airport and got refused entry to the country because they didn’t have the correct paperwork. Ryanair would be required to fly them back to the UK at their own cost at the minimum so it’s easier for the airline to stop them getting on board the plane in the UK to start with.

I think those that want to define it the first way are trying to find a way to exclude the feeling minorities might have towards whites in the case of the US. But a legitimate feeling that, in general, whites have wronged minorities and continue to do so is, at least to me, not racism. I’m not going to define what would actually constitute racism by minorities on whites because I’m not that creative, but I believe that it would be possible. But it definitely is possible for a person, no matter what group they are part of, to judge someone else totally on factors such as skin color.

Ryanair would be required to fly them back to the UK at their own cost at the minimum so it’s easier for the airline to stop them getting on board the plane in the UK to start with.

For the Schengen countries, there’s something called the ETIAS, that’s people who have visa free access need to apply for online (People coming inbound to the US under the US Visa Waiver program have to file for a similar thing to enter the US.) Without the ETIAS they won’t be allowed to board the flight.

But I didn’t think that would come into play for another year or so… Brits have visa free access to the EU (for people without a criminal record), so it’s quite possibly more likely related to any vaccination documentation required by Spain for entry in this time of Covid…

Biden isn’t trying to defend himself and is fully open about how sordid and out-of-control his life had become after Beau died. But as a long-time recovery guy, Maron still sounded concerned about relapse—Hunter did, too. Not a lot of focus on Joe, but I like him even more now for his unconditional love for Hunter.

There was a recent case of a local business asking a scammer to not use their phone number as the ‘origination number’. The scammer after that used the business’ number as the origination number for all their calls. Which resulted in a huge number of complaints to and about the (innocent) business.

Additionally, some scammers create lists of active phone numbers and sell them to other scammers

Norwegian crown princess - the backstory to the current Norwegian royal line is that Norway had to reboot its monarchy as the old ones (during the viking era) had long died out, and having been under Danish rule for so long, then briefly Swedish rule, Norway didn’t have much to go on in regards to royalty.

Personally I think they should have just gone with a republic and dumped the who monarchy thing.

The Martha of this PBS series was, indeed, a Swedish Princess.

During WWII some of Norway’s ruling politicians were in refuge in Switzerland, like many others. Including one of my 4th cousins 2x removed, IIRC, who was a Norwegian minister at that time.

All this history was not that long ago.

But in America our current political chatter is so far removed from this era, it seems.

I get that. But I do think there’s a distinction to be made between institutional/systemic racism and interpersonal racism. Both are important to recognize and combat, but they take different tools to combat effectively.

The Japanese government could add the digital health certificate to an app slated for release in April that would hold digital certificates for negative test results and connect to a new system that tracks progress in the government’s vaccination program. The app would allow citizens to provide proof of vaccination to board a plane or check into a hotel. The Japanese government will consider EU vaccination certificates and the “CommonPass” universal digital certificate in crafting its certification standards.

Norwegian energy research firm Rystad Energy predicted robotics and automation could replace hundreds of thousands of oil and gas workers worldwide and sharply slash the industry’s labor costs by 2030. The company said at least 20% of drilling, operational support, and maintenance jobs could be automated in the next decade, replacing more than 140,000 workers in the U.S. alone. Rystad calculated robotic drilling systems can potentially cut the number of roughnecks on drilling platforms by 20% to 30%, with U.S. wage costs reduced by more than $7 billion by 2030. Rystad expects technical issues like long-term reliability, and labor organizations’ opposition, will delay full robotic adoption.

On her father”s side, grandma was a Liberal politician who started speaking out vehemently against Hitler in 1933. She sponsored refugees, and coordinated refugee settlement for thousands more who had other sponsors. She was so loud, and so passionate about it, that she was on the Nazis’ list for immediate arrest if there’d been an invasion (also, she was an air warden).

On her mother’s side, grandpa was a Spanish diplomat stationed in France, who defied orders from his government and issued thousands of transit visas for Jews (mostly French, but also Polish and Dutch) to go through Spain to Portugal, where they could board a ship. He’s listed among the Righteous at Yad Vashem, name on a wall and everything.

Interesting perspective from Katie Hill:

Last week’s scandal, which centers on a Justice Department investigation into allegations of possible sex trafficking of a minor, also involves accusations of the same crime of which I was a victim: the nonconsensual sharing of intimate images. And in a twist of irony, the accused person, Matt Gaetz, is one of the few colleagues who came to my defense when it happened to me.

Matt and I served on the House Armed Services Committee (HASC) together. It’s one of the last places in Congress with any semblance of bipartisanship. On one of the early days, I got lost, as freshman members sometimes do. Matt found me in the hallway and showed me to the hearing room where we were about to be briefed by top brass at the Pentagon. He said that in the previous term, he had no idea where anything was either, joking about how he was no longer the youngest one on the committee. He told me that he was the least popular Republican on HASC because he believed in climate change and was anti-war.

It’s an interesting read.

Among the items on the table was a Bajoran Tablet that belonged to Sisko. There was also the book “Paradise Lost” which was the name of a DS9 episode where Sisko has to come back to Earth and basically convince the Federation to NOT start being a bunch of fascists because they’re worried about changelings invading Starfleet HQ.

We’re always on the move.

There are a vast number of smaller faults that sister the current San Andreas. There are many parallel faults even under water now, part of the continental shelf.

I don’t really fear earthquakes down here, though inevitably there will be a M7 somewhere along the San Andreas. Let’s hope modern building standards keep casualties down when it happens.

[Embedded content]

Shot 1 I wore one of my Mexican shirts in order to think forward. Today the theme was Aloha.

I am getting the second Pfizer tomorrow morning. I am just kind of stressed, because I hate the idea of being sick, and knowing I am doing something that is purposely going to make me sick, but then I consider that people go into chemotherapy every day knowing that it is going to make them sicker than dogs. I will just hope I get mild side effects. Already taking Wednesday off.

The phenomenon of fandom toxicity is under appreciated, I think.

Star Trek
Star Wars
Tolkien

All these creative landscapes now have vast numbers of obnoxiously toxic fans who crap on anything.

Now a non-trivial portion of this is truly incels whining about “wokeness”.

It’s knee-jerk reactionist nonsense.

But I wonder if the deeply troubling changes in our society have forced many young-ish males to truly feel emasculated. They feel a need for manhood but the old ways are now not available for them.

I don’t know about Tolkien fans, but as a Trek fan I can say with a fair bit of confidence that the toxicity was always there. All the spread of the internet has done is move what used to be limited to conventions or fan forums out into the open. All sorts of shit was lost when TNG was not a TOS clone, then when DS9 was on a station rather than a starship, and let’s not get started about all the male fans who went apeshit over learning the new post-TNG Trek series was gonna have a female captain!

Given how insanely woke Star Trek has been over more than half a century, they should…. find something else to watch.

- It was the only show Martin Luther King Jr. let his children watch because it was one of the first shows with an important African American character. Hell, he even persuaded Nichelle Nichols to stay on the show.
- It had an Asian helmsman as a major character who in real life had spent his early life in a concentration camp in his own country.
- It had someone from the Cold War enemy as one of the main characters.
- It had a biracial/bicultural character.

I remember when TNG came out that some TOS fans were unhappy.

But what I am describing by toxicity is not dislike or complaints about “canon”.

It’s the interbreeding of non-show complaints into (artistic/production/theory) dimensions of show criticism.

The Tolkien fans are starting to be the worst. The new Amazon series (due late this year) has really set off the white-boy Tolkien fans.

Racists have always been drawn to Tolkien because Tolkien himself was strongly steered by the deep racism of the culture from which he drew his own inspirations. Tolkien’s works are strongly patriarchal and very Euro-centric.

Now that Amazon is casting melanin-rich actors… well, that’s just too much for a certain segment of Tolkien fandom.

Amazon is spending a billion dollars for a new “LOTR” series, so they will push it hard when it is released. It will be the bait to keep Prime subscribers.

It’s not really LOTR of course since they have to set it in a period of Tolkien’s universe that is thousands of years before LOTR.

So no hobbits. No wizards either, unless Amazon invent new ones. In that case, sure, there will be great outcry about “canon”.

But the real angst will come if there is even one elf with dark skin. That will be cataclysmic for the racist sector of Tolkien fandom.

Humans in the story could be dark skin, but they can’t be the good guys, who all come from the west and the north.

The only other “race” (in Tolkien terminology) that could be in a Second Age story would be the dwarves, and they aren’t supposed to be dark skin either.

Should Amazon actually insert some of the pantheon in the story (and the Tolkien estate probably would veto that kind of thing)… well, if they are dark skin then that might be a problem of cosmological scale.

Also - Tolkien fandom is in great fear of gay or bi relationships in this new series. Some of Tolkien fandom are straight up complaining already of any sex scenes in the coming series.

Anyway, Amazon has a tough road ahead if they are going to find the acceptance of their billion dollar venture.

Giving them too much credit I think. Society hasn’t ‘forced’ privileged young white males (because that’s what they almost always are) to feel emasculated. Privileged young men have always assumed that they would be powerful and dominant. When they’re not, they seek out groups that will include them and tell them they are, and try to lash out at anyone else to ensure that they stay that way. It is classic bully mentality, and it has been a part of the young, relatively privileged male psyche since the dawn of time. The internet allows anyone to be a bully without consequences - a perfect vehicle for this.

I don’t know about this. I always assumed when Tolkien introduced other countries to the south of the Middle Earth we’re familiar with, and then had the elephants show up, it was his way of letting readers know that there were almost certainly black folks wandering around. Now maybe the elves were all light-skinned, but I would steal the fuck out of Salvatore’s drow. They could be named something slightly different. Maybe there could be a chaotic good one named Drift, or something, who spends his time kicking the shit out evil with two long blades.

The Amazon series takes place in the Second Age, so it won’t have much Silmarillion material.

Amazon writers can’t depend upon Tolkien’s own writings for most of their characters, subplots. They have to wholly make up all dialogue.

So, the Amazon series is only Tolkien in McGuffin (the one ring.)

Regard Brokeback Mordor - yeah, I think it was pretty obvious that Peter Jackson was going for some closeted feelings between Sam and Frodo.

I was involved in the early stages of Star Trek fandom, fanzines and the Welcommittee. But it soon had an influx of libertarian nuts who glorified Ayn Rand and that turned me off of it. Saw Harlan Ellison talk about how he got burned and David Gerrold got blacklisted. Reading the Solow/Justman book really showed a dark side of Roddenberry that just turned me off of all fandom. I saw the same stuff repeat with Dr Who in the 80s. And it got even worse with Star Wars and Tolkien.

I think all this fandom turmoil testifies to how spoiled we’ve gotten in regards to entertainment.

We demand to be entertained.

And if what we get isn’t what we imagined, we get mad.

It’s all very childish.

I’ve had thoughts that I should right a series of stories that are set in the era of the canonical gospels, but have all the characters be not what Christians expect.

The Jesus-as-a-space-alien thing was a sort of pop-thought some time back. But no one ever had a successful creative product based on that.

Heresy it will be called. Just look at what happened with The LIfe of Brian.

Over the years the writers of Doctor Who have turned the Doctor into an alternate savior figure, without calling the Doctor explicitly a “christ”. But that is what the character has become.

I think there is still a possibility in the cult writings of late Judaism/early Christianity for someone to make a compelling modern retake on the whole universe of late antiquity religion. In some ways that is what Marvel has done.

Sad news for us old MAD fans, from Mark Evanier’s blog
newsfromme.com

Frank Jacobs, R.I.P.
Published Monday, April 5, 2021 at 3:37 PM
“Longtime MAD magazine writer Frank Jacobs passed away this morning at the age of 91. When Harvey Kurtzman stepped down as editor of MAD and was replaced by Al Feldstein, Frank was the first writer Feldstein bought material from and over the years, he and subsequent editors bought a lot of it from Frank.

“That first piece of his for MAD appeared in #33, cover-dated June of 1957. He had work in 312 issues, making him the seventh most-prolific contributor to the magazine ever. (Beating him out: Jaffee, Aragonés, DeBartolo, Drucker, Coker and Berg.) Frank’s last new work seems to have been in #529, cover-dated October of 2014. Work of his is reprinted in almost every issue of the last few years.

“I thought he was not only the best writer of humorous verse and parody lyrics in MAD but in the whole world of comedy writing. He never got the recognition he deserved for all that brilliant work and that was one reason I was proud to present him with the Bill Finger Award at Comic-Con International in 2009. Another was that I really liked Frank. I learned a lot from him and I laughed a lot because of him — as did anyone who read more than a few issues of that magazine.”

My husband is reminiscing about ComicCon 2000 — we were in a MAD panel, listening to Frank Jacobs talk about one of his early parody songs, written to the tune of ‘Downtown.’ He was sure no one would remember it… and Mark E., who was running the panel, stood up and led an audience of at least 80 fans in a rousing rendition of ‘Ground Round.’ Yeah, most of us knew all the words, and the look on his face was priceless.

re: #161 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

Looking at the comments on the trailer, it seems that enough of the Trek-fandom is now irredeemably toxic that CBS is going to be in a losing situation.

I didn’t catch them.

I doubt it. Most trekkers are live and let live types. If you don’t like a particular trek, that’s fine and the people who do won’t bug you.

People who post comments on you tube are another matter.

My wife’s second Moderna is on the 21st. I’m seeing a cardiologist in Bridgeport (fallout from my hand surgery) on the 15th, followed by occupational therapy in Sidney (Medical Week at Chez Tumbleweed).

re: #183 Targetpractice

I don’t know about Tolkien fans, but as a Trek fan I can say with a fair bit of confidence that the toxicity was always there. All the spread of the internet has done is move what used to be limited to conventions or fan forums out into the open. All sorts of shit was lost when TNG was not a TOS clone, then when DS9 was on a station rather than a starship, and let’s not get started about all the male fans who went apeshit over learning the new post-TNG Trek series was gonna have a female captain!

They make a lot of noise online, but twitter represents a tiny fraction of the populations. At conventions, we’re pretty chill, as I mentioned above. I have no experience of toxicity.

re: #195 steve_davis

I don’t know about this. I always assumed when Tolkien introduced other countries to the south of the Middle Earth we’re familiar with, and then had the elephants show up, it was his way of letting readers know that there were almost certainly black folks wandering around. Now maybe the elves were all light-skinned, but I would steal the fuck out of Salvatore’s drow. They could be named something slightly different. Maybe there could be a chaotic good one named Drift, or something, who spends his time kicking the shit out evil with two long blades.

Tolkien began his writings as a mythology for England (which has practically none). So of course all his characters were white, at that time all the people of Northern E8rope were white. What he would think of multiracial casting I do not know — but to the best of my knowledge he opposed racism in all its forms.

In any case, (IMHO) the fact that all the ancient brits were white is unimportant, and there’s no reason to restrict casting to white people.

The mayoral primary in Omaha is officially non-partisan, tomorrow. The top two go on to the General Election.

Mayor Jean Stothert (R) is seeking a third term. She has some sympathy push because her physician husband Joe suicided a few weeks ago (partly over the horror of the Covid oubreak here).

She is opposed by four Democratic candidates.

If Tolkien fans made it through the movies, where Sam and Frodo are like goddamned Brokeback Mordor, then they should be able to handle gay characters in a silmarillion universe.

I would have trouble with gay characters in a silmarillion universe — and straight ones too. The last thing I want to see in the series is Peyton Place in the First Age. It was why I bailed from GOT.

Paris-Brest (Pâte à Choux With Praline Crème Mousseline) Recipe

The Paris-Brest is a classic French pastry, featuring a crisp, almond-studded baked ring of pâte à choux that’s split in half horizontally, liberally filled with praline crème mousseline—a heady mixture of vanilla pastry cream, nutty praline paste, and whipped butter—and finished with a dusting of powdered sugar.

This bakery staple was created in 1910 by pastry chef Louis Durand, as an homage to the long-distance Paris-Brest-Paris bicycle race (the pastry’s circular shape is meant to evoke that of a bicycle wheel). Pâtisserie Durand, which is still owned and operated by the Durand family, claims to have the original recipe, but fortunately this hasn’t prevented pastry chefs around the world from putting forth their own spins on the dessert.

True story.
I used to go to Trek conventions in Des Moines. The last one I went to was about 13 years ago in one of the downtown hotels, but there were tons of conventions going down that weekend and I ended up having to park a mile plus from the venue.
John deLancie was the big guest at this one and I watched him break a nerd’s heart during the Q&A when the kid asked him if he had ever read any of the Trek books, and deLancie lectured him for a good five minutes about real literature and wasting one’s time with books that don’t matter in the real world. He then went on and on about how he only does the conventions to make money so he can create real art. I’ve read that he’s really nice and approachable at every other convention, so I’d like to think he was having a bad day.
ANYWAY…A very nice Black lady, dressed as an old school Starfleet Admiral, and I sort of caught each other’s eye as this was going on, and we ended up eating together at the hotel restaurant. Just us and her two 6 foot plus sons dressed and made up as Klingons. Excellent costuming, even better makeup jobs. Convention and dinner over and it was close to midnight and she asked if I was staying at the hotel like they were, and I told her I had a 3 hour drive ahead of me and that I had parked so far away.
So there I am, walking in not a nice part of downtown Des Moines, late at night, guarded on either side by Klingons. The stares we got. And a ton of just delighted smiles.
Looking so forward to Q and Guinan and Crusher on Picard this year. More than a little ticked off that Janeway’s been relegated to a voice on a kid’s cartoon.

I was sitting at a table next to John deLancie’s a couple of years ago and we started talking. In fact, I was holding a star trek novel and he asked me what I thought of it (so so, there are some really good ST books, this wasn’t one of them). Nothing about the waste of my time, so I’m going to say that either he was having a bad day back then or he’s mellowed with the years.

(It took me a while to learn that you can produce great literature in any medium, including formulaic TV series novels. It took much less to truly appreciate that ninety percent of everything is crap.)

The 2 best remain John M Ford’s books: The Final Reflection and How Much For Just The Planet. To really appreciate the latter requires a working knowledge of Gilbert and Sullivan ;) Ah, Mike. Never got to meet you in person and I doubt I miss an author more! I’ll have to pour him a libation in the morning after work.

I love the disingenuous argument “you need ID to buy cigarettes or booze, you need ID to cash a cheque” &c.

I don’t need an ID for any of that crap. I was never required to put a copy of an ID in a letter paying a bill. They just take the cheque.

No one at the bank asks me for my ID when I put in or take out money. No one at the store asks for ID if they know me to buy liquor or cigarettes.

The same goes for polling stations in small towns where the workers know the voters.

One of my favorite con moments was in San Jose in the 80’s. The convention center was in an area without a lot of evening foot traffic, but a McDonalds a couple of blocks away. One of my rather nervous friends had walked down there alone; the only other customers were a group of maybe-sort-of-gang-looking teenagers. She says she was trying to decide if it was safer to stay or to go when a group dressed as Star Wars sand people walked in. She swears her reaction was a sigh of relief — “Oh good, normal folks…”
