LYRICS

Pretty Nova, one year over
Legal age of consent
In the flower of sweet youth our
Days of heaven were spent

Giving that heaven away
Giving that heaven away
Rock ‘n’ Roll, and freeing your soul, and
Giving that heaven away

I’m looking ‘round for that sixties sound -
Those days are gone
And all us acid dropping, world stopping, be bopping
Freaks are just hanging on

Little Nova, did you have to show the
Whole world how to rebel?
Standing there with your long brown hair
Like a cool breeze blowing through hell

Giving that heaven away
Giving that heaven away
Back in those days we all were so crazy
Giving that heaven away

Giving that heaven away
Giving that heaven away
Oooooooh
Giving that heaven away

Seems like the whole world’s at a fire sale
But I might be wrong
With all the home shopping,
Bling bling and hip hopping
Maybe it’s just going strong

But hey now Nova, we both know the
Ones who’re always making it pay
Well any fool can sell a jewel
But an angel will give it away

Giving that heaven away
Giving that heaven away
Oooooooh I’m going go down singing
And giving that heaven away

Where did the day go in that Winnebago?
The two of us hot as a stove
Fools for pleasure, digging for treasure
Down in that Black Oak grove
Giving that heaven away
Giving that heaven away
Oooooooh
Giving that heaven away

As much as I’ve called them the American Taliban and similar, the reality is that these are right wing Christofascists. They are Christian extremists. There’s no sense or purpose dragging other religious groups into this when identifying them explicitly as the religious group they are serves the purpose properly.

Nope. I think it’s a valid analogy and an important one.
Note, first, that there is no religious content to the name “Taliban” (“students, “seekers of knowledge”) in contrast to, say, “Islamic nationalist” or “Islamofascist.” They, the Taliban, are an extreme anti-modern cult that claims a religious warrant. That religion, Islam, includes large bodies of adherents who have nothing to do with this kind of political extremism. The same is true of Christianity.
I think it is important to connect these extremist movements, at least rhetorically, because both are part of a worldwide trend toward extreme reaction against the modern world, and especially against equality and social progress.
It is important to name them accurately in serious discourse, right wing extremists or even fascists, but they can also be mocked as Taliban because there are real points of equivalence that should be emphasized.

Just a thought: Some male with some money or financial backing needs to make a big show about supporting helping someone get an abortion, to get sued. And then challenge the law on the grounds that a law cannot be set up to violate a person’s first amendment rights, and they cannot empower non-government entities to enforce the laws.

Along this same line, the various nationalist bodies in Europe have little religious basis (though most give some lip service to the national superstition), but they are part of the same trend. Orban’s Fidesz movement in Hungary, for example, gives a lot of verbal emphasis to “Christian values” and claims to represent “Christian democracy,” but is often at odds with Christian groups like the Catholic Church. As with American extremists, religion is primarily a rationale for their oppressive and reactionary social policies.

It seems like my timeline is full of nothing but people laying all failures at Dems’ feet for ‘not trying hard enough’, ‘wasting total control/absolute majorities’, etc. and basically treating Dems exclusively as ‘the problem’. Even mostly reasonable people have gone full bore on ‘All the Dems fault!!’ bandwagon. This, complete with apparent lagging indicator that the media’s full bore assault on Biden has actually worked to tank his numbers, and…fuck everything…

We’re basically fucking screwed before 2022 comes around at this rate, the entire country in chorus seems to want us hung high for everything while the GOP skates on by. We apparently have no more allies, we’re just ‘the problem’. So…fuck it.

This hostility has been around since 1517 when Martin Luther pinned his 95 Theses to the door of his Catholic church, denouncing the Catholic sale of indulgences, and was subsequently excommunicated from the Church. It’s been attenuated in recent years but certainly many still hold ancient animosities.

And let’s not forget 1533 when Henry VIII split from the church so he could marry Ann Boleyn — a split that led to hundreds of years of conflict between the British and the Irish.

I don’t even fucking know at this point, it just seems like it’s become an inevitability at this point because nothing the Dems can do is good enough, and the more we fight, the more people lay the blame at our feet and hate us, all the while things get worse and fucking worse. And I want to see fucking light at the end of this but all I hear and see is ‘YOUR FAULT, YOUR FAULT!’ and even the most reasoned voices ready to just burn the Dem party to the ground.

According to the Freepers, death numbers have dropped dramatically because of the Regeneron treatment being so available. I’m guessing a lack of reporting by the state of Florida is responsible for this hot take.

Calling them Taliban adds a foreign sounding concept and obfuscates root cause and source/origination. This is a homegrown movement of right wing Christian extremists who seek to end democracy and impose their theocratic views on the rest of us.

Introducing a foreign sounding concept, like, for example, “Fascism” (the actual name of a foreign nationalist party), emphasizes the genuine international context of these movements. The only really home-grown part is the fertile ground of religion. They are Christians in the United States for the same reason they are Muslims in Afghanistan: The prevalent local religion provides a ready made framework for their activism.
In other parts of the world, the term “fundamentalism” is of foreign origin. It was coined in the United States in the early 1900s to refer to the rise of extreme Biblical literalism in what were then fringe Christian groups. It transfers well because it describes a very common type of movement, one that promotes dogma above reason in order to justify a status quo, or former status quo, that cannot withstand critical appraisal.

Pretty sure that it has to be administered by injection (a needle attached to a saline bag and drug combo). If you’re afraid of needles, this is worse. You’re stuck with a needle in your arm until the cocktail is fully administered. Instead of a seconds long jab, you’re pumped full of antibodies that may not prevent future covid, let alone stop current covid symptoms.

But sure, go ahead and question what’s in the vaccine, when you have no clue what’s in the horse dewormer people are clamoring for, let alone these monoclonal antibody treatments.

The Montbleu Resort, Casino and Spa — a towering 438-room Nevada hotel just blocks from the California line — began offering discounts for evacuees, $60 rates for firefighters and first responders, and free lodging for its employees.

For everyone else, it hiked room prices Tuesday from $120 to $450 per night before taxes and fees.

Tim Tretton, the resort’s vice president-general manager, said in a statement Wednesday it did so to deter tourists from traveling near the wildfire and to keep rooms available for evacuees. The company planned to pay back the difference to those who booked at the higher cost, he said.

“We did not and do not plan to collect on these rates, and have provided reimbursements or reductions as appropriate,” Tretton said.

Leaving South Lake Tahoe also got pricier for some travelers.

A 60-mile (96-kilometer) Lyft XL ride from the city to Reno normally costs roughly $200. On Tuesday, it rose nearly eightfold as people rushed to beat the flames.

A furious resident shared a screenshot of the rates on Twitter, showing $1,535 for a minivan or SUV for a minimum of five passengers. SFGate reported the costs had dropped back to $230 midday.

Lyft and Uber said in statements Wednesday that price jumps triggered automatic caps as demand soared around South Lake Tahoe amid emergency evacuations. Lyft said it was “reviewing and adjusting fares for certain riders who were impacted in the region.”

“When ride requests outpace the number of drivers on the road, prime-time pricing — elevated fares designed to get more drivers to high-demand areas — is automatically enabled,” the company said. “When we realized how the evacuation order was affecting Lyft prices, we immediately implemented a cap and ultimately suspended prime-time pricing.”

The famous Whitney plantation was hit hard by Hurricane Ida. Instagram

Our “Child of Whitney” and the Big House are still standing even after an almost direct hit from the eye of the storm. The incredible craftsmanship and skills of the enslaved Africans who were forced to build the house for the owning family is the reason it has weathered many storms since 1791. It is just one example of the many buildings, roads, structures, and landscape built by enslaved hands that form the foundation of this country’s development. Whitney Plantation will require extensive restoration, but we are extremely grateful that our original structures, including the cabins, barns, and kitchen are still standing (photos coming soon). The Antioch Church, built by freedmen also stands. During our time of closure, we will continue to pay our staff. Please consider donating at whitneyplantation.org or through the link in bio to support our recovery efforts. We will provide frequent updates and information on our website and social media. rant/

I am beyond words by now. This is so sad.

I am a high school teacher in Florida. Not one of the mask-mandate districts. So far this year, I have 6 students that I know of who have tested positive. It was 3 all year last year. All have recovered okay, to the best of my knowledge.

My Principal, our School Resource Officer (euphemism for the local cop - he’s a very nice guy, actually), and several teachers have been out with Covid. I don’t know how many because we are not told. Again, all have recovered okay or are recovering, to the best of my knowledge. But it is luck.

Last week included my scariest day. A student who was in class, in the front row one day (no mask), went home and tested positive that same night. Obviously, he was positive while in my class. The next day, I was asked to supply names of students who sat close to the positive student. I started to list the 5-6 who sit within 8 ft and was cut off… the district Covid team only wants to know who sits within 6 ft. I gave one name, certain that at least that student would be quarantined. I asked about myself and was told, did you sit within 6 ft for 15 minutes? Um, no, but I walked in front of the student several times during the class. No matter.

Next day, the student I identified was in class, in the front row, without a mask. I contacted administration, certain there must have been a mistake or lack of communication. I mean, this student sat shoulder-to-shoulder with a positive student for 48 minutes. Why is he in my class and not quarantined? I was asked, “Are you a doctor?” and my concerns were dismissed.

I had to go back into the classroom and try to teach with this obviously-should-have-been-quarantined maskless student in the front row.

I told the kids to take a break and busied myself on the other side of the room while I tried to calm myself inside. Eventually, I taught half a lesson, staying on the far side of the room from the student.

The situation is entirely insane. We are giving the benefit of the doubt to students who do not wear masks (~60%) instead of the students who are trying to do the right thing and stay safe. And teachers are just supposed to put up with it.

/rant

Edited to say that I am vaccinated and wear a mask, every day. Worried more about students and families than myself. But still…

New COVID-19 variant mu has a toehold in Illinois. Should you be worried?

My answer is: Yes, be concerned.

Because the simple truth is this - due in large part to negligence by some, willful-stupidity by others (see: Trump, Desantis, etc.), and plain old poverty (large parts of the world), SARS-Cov-2 as a virus is finding its evolutionary niche in Homo sapiens.

Our genomes are testaments to prior sweeps through our species, of diseases that have altered the human population.

With not only μ but also C.1.2 (that’s a variant of the variant previously known as the South African variant) popping up, we have to be ready for even more mutations of concern.

This causes a lot of whining from the usual crowd (Trumpers), but they are ignorant (willfully) of the past. Our parents, grandparents, great grandparents, etc. all went through their own pandemics.

We should accept that vaccinations are necessary as a part of modern life. Modern population densities demand it. And we should accept that techniques like social isolation and quarantine are part of living with other people.

…people should go to prison…

…but people should not go to American prison as it is currently constituted.

That I can’t stand the insurrectionists doesn’t blot out that they’re going to be put into a system that brutalizes everyone for profit and justifies it as retaliation.

They’re not going to suffer proportionate to their crime, they’re going to suffer proportionate to our larger cultural understanding that people should be hurt indefinitely and disproportionately in ways that are cruel and unusual, in manners dictated by the profit margins of the private institutions that operate our carceral system.

We’re not even getting our pound of flesh, we’re just getting the pound of flesh that the butcher shop produces from all the off cuts.

One thing I haven’t really seen anyone (who’s knowledgeable) address about the new TX abortion bounty hunter law is this: Couldn’t an organized harassment campaign target a single individual with dozens and dozens of individual lawsuits by different plaintiffs? Even if the defendant “won” wouldn’t they still be destroyed by legal fees and court costs?

I did see a lawyer on Twitter address this, and we’ve actually seen this with the Quacken cases: Sanctions. Lawyers who bring frivolous cases would suffer damage to their reputation, could get hit by anti-SLAPP, and the courts could sanction them for it. So, yes, it is a plausible possibility, if someone wants to do it pro se. You’re not going to find very many lawyers who are willing to put their careers on the line for that kind of harassment.

Our staff team did an “offsite”, traveling from Ft Rucker to Eglin AF Base, to get a very contentious document written. The facility was the officers’ club which was closed for renovation. Part of that work was done by federal prisoners from the Club Fed prison housed by the base—painting the walls, etc.

My boss was notoriously determined and notoriously bad at playing the markets. I pointed out the painter nearest us and told him: “Here’s your chance boss, that guy is a Wall Street whiz.”

Tomorrow is opening day for ‘Bama and Auburn. Auburn’s rules:

Although Auburn is planning for full capacity at Jordan-Hare Stadium this season, it is not requiring proof of vaccination or proof of a recent negative COVID test for entry. Face coverings or masks will also not be required in Jordan-Hare Stadium, since it’s an open-air facility, though the CDC still recommends face coverings in large gatherings.

JFC, what a fucking weasel judge

“I often sit in a courtroom and there’s sometimes a good guy and a bad guy, but in this case, it’s difficult because there’s a lot of competing rights. I think in the end everyone wants the same thing here and the ultimate outcome, but the court is brought in to decide where we go from there,” said Judge Michael Oster Jr.

The next decision will be if the hospital must continue to administer the drug which has not been approved for treating COVID-19.

On Friday, the judge modified the original court order so that if Smith has any life-threatening side effects, the hospital can stop the treatment.

If you wanna call yourself “pro-life, ” then I wanna see you call for vaccination and mask mandates, sensible gun accountability laws, living wages, and the elimination of the death penalty with the same fervor as you oppose abortion.

If the quality of life of people who are already here doesn’t matter to you more than a clump of cells that cannot survive outside the mother’s body, you are not, in any sense, pro-life.

You are instead pro-forced birth and reproductive slavery.

First of all, IANAL. But I have administered many large Federal Government contracts. One thing I learned in many contract law classes is that if an official document is not signed by a Government official (who is authorized to sign such document) the the document is considered null and void.

So, since none of the 5 Supremes signed the Texass decision is the decision therefore considered null and void?

Just how do we know the the decision given to the public is the true decision without any authorizing signatures?

The UK had a lot fewer slaves but compensation for the owners was still a huge expense even though payment was spread out over a number of years. Slavery Abolition Act 1833

The Act provided for payments to slave-owners. The amount of money to be spent on the payments was set at “the Sum of Twenty Million Pounds Sterling”. Under the terms of the Act, the British government raised £20 million to pay out for the loss of the slaves as business assets to the registered owners of the freed slaves. In 1833, £20 million amounted to 40% of the Treasury’s annual income or approximately 5% of British GDP at the time. To finance the payments, the British government took on a £15 million loan, finalised on 3 August 1835, with banker Nathan Mayer Rothschild and his brother-in-law Moses Montefiore; £5 million was paid out directly in government stock, worth £1.5 billion in present day. The money was not paid back by the British taxpayers until 2015,

Listening to my college chem major kid, while completing an assignment, going off on a detailed and elaborate rant about how much he hates oxygen, apparently for its inconsistent reactive/combining behavior. Laughing my head off. He told us, “In a metaphor that I should probably not use in front of my parents: At the orgy, there are tops, and there are bottoms. Then there is oxygen. Oxygen is a pancake. It is not done until it has been flipped on both sides.”

God views all lives as precious, from the unborn to the dying. The problem with American Christians (and some Christians I know in other parts of the world, for that matter) is that they emphasize the former to the exclusion of the latter.

I am now at the point with forced birthers that I ask them bluntly if they believe women and girls who are sexually assaulted should be forced to remain pregnant against their will. After they say something about how all life is precious no matter how it gets here, I tell them that they value rapists and their sperm over women and they are horrible people. I have no problem with that. They call me a murderer because I donated money to the Lilith Fund.

He mentioned “That law in Texas” and then dropped the subject until the other guy brought it up and they talked about how “getting what they asked for” just might hurt their chances in the future, while spending most of the time reveling in how dirty and hard republicans fight. If Jordan Peterson were an extrovert there would be little to distinguish him from the likes of L. Ron Hubbard or any other successful cult leader.

re: #240 A Mom Anon

This is a prime example of what a lack of decent, compassionate and smart leadership gets you. If we cared about each other and really had connection on a healthy level, none of this shit would even be in anyone’s head as smart.
