Highland Park is also one hour from the Indiana border, which basically has no gun laws. That’s why Indiana guns show up in Illinois shootings time and time and time again. https://t.co/PkOfHLw6Fl

Though unconfirmed, seems like the shooter was firing from the top of a business called Uncle Dan’s (don’t know what that is, TBH).
Just spitballing, but I wonder if after exhausting whatever ammo he’d brought with him, he ditched the firearm, got down off the roof, and blended into the crowd that was running away.
That’d be almost perfect cover for a fleeing gunman.

How did the shooter get access to the roof of the building (if that indeed is the case)? From an image I saw, it’s just a one-story building and on Street View, I’m not seeing anything that looks like an access ladder on the exterior.

There’s an alley behind the building and plenty of adjacent roofs. Probably not too hard to find a fire escape or other way up.

These sort of retail stores are not usually security-tight fortresses, over and above the usual anti-burglary precautions (except if they sell guns).
Probably not easy to access the roof from inside, but probably not overly difficult, either.

No information whether connected to todays mass shooting, just putting it here:
NBC Chicago: Antisemitic Flyers Found in Highland Park, Other North Shore Communities
Authorities responded to reports of antisemitic flyers littered across Highland Park and other North Shore communities Thursday morning.
The flyers, which contained antisemitic hate speech, appeared in neighborhoods on Yom HaShoah, the Day of Holocaust Remembrance, according to Highland Park police.
Stop grooming our kids, you godbothering weirdos
“…Stop grooming our children, you freaks. Stop indoctrinating them to believe that the God they should believe in is a vapid entity that throws high school sports games based on the whims of abusive authority figures. Stop teaching them that God is a slot machine for them to put quarters in.
I don’t care what religious sect you belong to: If you’re leading children in prayer on the 50-yard line, your religion sucks. I don’t care what you call God or how many gods you believe in; if you’re leading a prayer on the field that ties the outcomes of sporting events to how the deities feel that evening, what is wrong with you.
Teaching kids about the history of lynching in America is not “grooming” them. Teaching our kids the formalities of praying in your religion is absolutely “grooming” them, and is in fact grooming them to be the worst kind of religious charlatans. Performative. Public. Hollow-headed. Insincere. Trivial.”

The fellow they’re talking to on WGN now made a good point: In most of these cases, the shooter is either taken out by police or kills themselves.
Now this guy is apparently on the run, so that makes me think he planned this out - engage and escape. How long he stays on the run is, of course, impossible to guess and it’s possible that the shooter may kill themselves later at some point or do a suicide by cop. But this seems to me there was planning involved.

I was having this thought too. “Hey, someone should do a fourth of July parade while the marching band goes by so that no one knows it’s gunshots!” “That’s sick!” “Yeah it is.”
They’re saying the gunman has been on the run for about four hours now and ATF is tracing the firearm back to hopefully ID the shooter.
Oh yeah, I’m pretty sure this was planned out. And I wonder if the shooter was an out-of-stater.
Wingnuts don’t want to talk about CRT or gender or sex in schools. They think mental health is something you do in the privacy of your own home, or at the office of a certified practitioner.
Certified practitioners are going to be needed at each school to talk about suicide. So many of these mass shootings are suicides with company. They are going to need to find a way to tell each and every child that they matter and we want them to stay. And then show it by taking care of the planet and all the inhabitants.

OT:
Prior to retiring, I was on the Global Fraud team for the major telecom company.
So I am familiar with the actions taken to try and reduce robocalls. It’s a game of whack-a-mole as the robocallers find ways to get around the blocks.
The government mandated that the telecoms implement STIR and SHAKEN to help reduce robocalls (the deadline for large telecoms to implement these protocols was June 2021).
STIR/SHAKEN is a framework created to reduce robocalls by verifying the digital signature of an outbound call. Network providers are able to identify if a call is coming from a legitimate business or a scammer and label the call accordingly. STIR stands for Secure Telephone Identity Revisited.
STIR/SHAKEN uses the principle behind digital certificates to indicate whether a caller has the right to use a given telephone number. Knowing how a call originated in the network is a useful signal of trust. However, inbound call centers require more signals and analysis to authenticate callers.
However, the government mandate only applied to telecoms with over 100,000 subscribers. So the robocallers started routing calls through smaller telecoms which haven’t implemented STIR/SHAKEN. Without STIR/SHAKEN in place, it’s possible to spoof the caller ID on robocalls.
Anyway, it seems the government has now moved up the date for the smaller telecoms to implement STIR/SHAKEN.
The Federal Communications Commission today said it closed a robocall loophole by requiring small phone companies to implement the caller ID authentication technology known as STIR and SHAKEN.
Large voice providers were required to implement STIR/SHAKEN a year ago. But there was an exemption for carriers with 100,000 or fewer customers that would have given those smaller companies until June 30, 2023, to comply.
The FCC voted in December to move that deadline up to June 30, 2022, because small phone companies were apparently carrying a disproportionately high number of illegal robocalls.
This may reduce the number of robocalls. However, as I noted earlier, it’s a game of whack-a-mole trying to close each loophole the scammers use. But this change should at least help.
re: #93 Ace Rothstein
We don’t know that, but we do know that the suspect is white, so if he is apprehended alive he’ll get a trip to McDonald’s on his way to jail.
I’m sure they will be careful and not bang his head against the top of the cop car while carefully placing him in the back seat.
Once he is inside safe in the cop car on his way to jail and a trial I’m also sure they will tell him not to feel so bad, that his terrorism will soon be eclipsed by the next American shootout due in a few days or weeks. That should take some heat off his predicament.
And then they can all rant together in the car about how White Entitlement doesn’t exist and that BLM are the real racists.
I’m just waiting for the GOP spin, which I presume will be something along the lines of “See, everyone, you’re looking at this wrong. This young man was merely celebrating his God-given Second Amendment constitutional rights on this Fourth of July by raining some freedom down upon his fellow countrymen!”

This is a rough translation of the hed and subhed: A young woman who lost her pregnancy in El Salvador was sentenced to 50 years in prison. Feminist organizations allege that the 21 YO woman [19 at the time of the incident], had an obstetric emergency. However, this is the first time that the maximum penalty was applied here.
It should be noted that this incident took place in a very poor part of El Salvador, the young woman is from a poor family, and medical care is scarce on the ground. Nevertheless, she is being held accountable for the failure of her pregnancy, and in fact, she basically had the burden of showing that she did not try to abort her fetus.
I’m hoping that El Pais translates this into English for its English version. I’ll post it, because basically, it is a clusterfuck and we’re looking at this kind of crap in our country.

Comment from a person who was at the Highland Park parade (interviewed on MSNBC).
“It struck me that these kids were little like between 7 and 10. They were scared. They had terrified looks on their faces but they were so composed because they’ve been through active shooter drills and they knew what to do. They knew what to do because of moments like now.”
It’s unconscionable to me that even one person thinks any of this is okay let alone being a mjoar part of the GOP platform. America has absolutely nothing to celebrate today.

A T-Rex would’ve come in handy right about then. A full grown T-Rex would actually be a relatively safe animal to have at Jurassic Park. Humans are too small to be worthwhile for a T-Rex to chase; it would expend more calories chasing a human than it would get from eating one. Just throw it an animal carcass every now and then, like a few cattle, and it would be good.
re: #120 Belafon
It’s the gun left by the gunman, on the 6 story building he shot from.
On the cop shows they would keep that a secret from the public to help weed out false admissions. Maybe possession of a rifle trophy counts as coup. I would rather it be a scalp because I fell asleep listening to Blood Meridian last night. So I plead temporary insanity until that session wears off.
re: #123 Teddy’s Person
If Americans really wanted gun reform legislation, they will not vote for Republicans who have made it very clear that they worship guns. We have two parties and it’s clear which one will at least work towards gun reform legislation even if SCOTUS knocks it down.

The “good guys with guns” solution to gun violence fails again.
As said, I ran through the Highland Park parade route 45 minutes before the shooting. There were police (with guns and body armor, as is now standard) everywhere, handling traffic, helping the setup.

2. Maryland has a murder rate of 9/100,000 France has 1.2/100,1000. Doesn’t sound too safe to me
I’ve seen interviews with people in Somalia. Most of them talk about how normal and safe it is. Until it isn’t.

I have found myself acting in a similar manner in public places. Always looking for a quick exit strategy especially when with my kids. With my kids deep into school I cannot simply pack up and move elsewhere in the world, at least not without some sort of freak job opportunity with generous family benefits. What they meant by people were white men who were required to “sign up” for militia duty and attend periodic musters instead of having a standing army. That’s the historic context for the 2nd amendment.
No, America and Somalia are not equivalent. If you wanted to go into a bad neighborhood in Somalia, you had to have a whole convoy, preferably with a couple of M-60 tanks (borrowed from the Italians) along for deterrence even though they are bad for what’s left of the pavement.
In America, you can probably manage with a single MRAP, or possibly even an armor kitted Humvee if you have drone support.

(N.B: A lot of wingnuts will be joking about the shooter being enraged over his taxes. This is a very common trope. As the Boston Marathon bombing was just happening, someone in my FB circles joked that it was “tax day”, which is near Patriot’s Day in Mass.

Not originally,
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America, in Congress assembled, That each and every free able-bodied white male citizen of the respective States, resident therein, who is or shall be of age of eighteen years, and under the age of forty-five years (except as is herein after excepted) shall severally and respectively be enrolled in the militia, by the

The organized militias predate the Revolution, and the British had majority-black Colonial Marines units. One was released from service in this ares, and became part of the garrison of Negro Fort between the Revolution and 1812.

My comments were not intended to be a comprehensive history of militias in the US, but the thinking about militias at the time the Constitution was written.

Welcome to July 4, 2022, when it’s ok to erase pregnant people completely. And I harp on about my mother nearly dying in childbirth, because, you know when I was a kid, about the only thing my mom mentioned was that I was an expensive baby. As we’ve gotten older, she’s opened up more about what happened and it really was a dicey thing. She didn’t tell me how truly serious it was until after Dad died in 2014.

So yeah, I’m tired, very tired, of anti-abortion fanatics completely erasing pregnant people.

What is a Catboy? Let’s go to the googles
A catboy, sometimes spelled cat boy or catboi, is a boy who dresses up as a cat. The term is usually in reference to a femboy and furry-adjacent persona with both human and cat features. Although they do not always participate in kink, they are often portrayed as sexualized and submissive characters. Contemporary catboys are typically recognizable by their cat ear and tail accessories and they’re often seen wearing maid costumes.

Fireworks are legal in this town. So our local FB page this time of year is full of people pleading for consideration for their pets or their loved ones with PTSD. These people are uniformly called “Karens” by the local shit bags. This year I decided to do just a few google searches on the shitbags. I was wrong. Most of them are just local business people (stands to reason because fireworks are pretty expensive) but there are always a few with felonies. I can’t understand why these people mouth off on FB when they have probation issues. I know I’m biased. I just loved fireworks when I was a kid, but then as an adult stopped being too impressed.
I saw a lot of talk of Cheney running 3rd party, since Trump has such a strangle hold on the GOP. Which in theory would be good, as she’d probably draw enough “This isn’t my GOP” cowards to possibly damage Trump.
Unfortunately, I know enough non-Trump voters who’d vote for her along the lines of “Well, she’s a woman who hates Trump, so that’s good enough for me. We need moderates like her! We need a woman president!!!”
Never underestimate how stupid American voters are.

‘No Way To Prevent This,’ Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens (The Onion, two hours ago)
HIGHLAND PARK, IL—In the hours following a violent rampage in which a lone attacker killed at least six individuals and injured more than two dozen at a Fourth of July parade, citizens living in the only country where this kind of mass killing routinely occurs reportedly concluded Monday that there was no way to prevent the massacre from taking place. “This was a terrible tragedy, but sometimes these things just happen and there’s nothing anyone can do to stop them,” said North Carolina resident Faye Perkins, echoing sentiments expressed by tens of millions of individuals who reside in a nation where over half of the world’s deadliest mass shootings have occurred in the past 50 years and whose citizens are 20 times more likely to die of gun violence than those of other developed nations. “It’s a shame, but what can we do? There really wasn’t anything that was going to keep shooters like this from snapping and killing a lot of people if that’s what they really wanted.” At press time, residents of the only economically advanced nation in the world where roughly two mass shootings have occurred every month for the past eight years were referring to themselves and their situation as “helpless.”

If I don’t take them, I know what happens, and it’s the opposite of “taxpaying benefit to society.” There are millions of us, millions, who take these drugs and we’re not going out and shooting up the town. That said, I’m not going to say what my response would be if someone told me my meds were harmful to my face. At the very minimum they’d get the bird.

Duh “47” is usually a reference to an AK-47.
Or he’s a Pomona College alum, we have special obsession with the number 47.

He’s a white murderer. Of course, he was gently taken in alive. Probably with a stop at McDonalds too.
Now if he were black and unarmed, he’d be dead with 50 bullets in him.— Bill Barnett (@BillBar29495196) July 5, 2022

In the unlikely event she won the nomination, at least we know she wouldn’t attempt a coup when she loses.
We also know she wouldn’t stab Ukraine in the back or sell us out to Putin. She would be far superior to DeathSantis.

It’s after sunset here, but still light. The wingnut Christians in the park have started setting up fireworks again in the street whilst singing hymns. I’ve already called the sheriff again for blocking the street without a permit. The department says a deputy is on the way.

How boring is that?

Almost as if “white” has come to denote a “generic” culture with no uniqueness whatsoever. Almost as if people have to partake in Black American culture to feel American.
Hey, Charles, can we have a new thread, please? This one is getting… unwieldy.

I’m a lame, vanilla person with no tattoos, coloured hair, piercings, jewellery, &c. (I managed to survive seventeen years of the US Navy with no tattoos.)
We had a minimum wage hike in Nebraska two elections ago through a ballot initiative. Nebraska’s wage was raised from $7.25 to $9.00.
A new ballot initiative has achieved the required signatures to be placed on the November ballot to raise the minimum wage to $15.00.
Measure to hike Nebraska minimum wage appears ready to qualify for November ballot (Nebraska Examiner)
On Friday, Raise the Wage Nebraska announced that it plans to turn in more than 130,000 signatures next week toward a requirement of submitting 87,500 signatures of valid Nebraska voters. The effort, according to a spokeswoman, is on track to submit enough signatures from 38 of the state’s 93 counties.
The initiative, if it qualifies for the ballot and is approved by voters, would raise Nebraska’s minimum wage to $15-an-hour by 2026.
Meanwhile, the medical marijuana initiative looks as though it will fail.
LOL, just as they started launching fireworks from the street, the sheriff’s deputy showed up and shut them down.
If they wanted to do this legally, all they would have had to do was apply to the village clerk in advance for a permit to close the street. It seems unlikely the village would not approve it (we really don’t get a lot of traffic), the village would formally barricade the street, and the fire brigade would provide an on-site truck to be ready if needed.
You can’t tell these folks what to do though.
