The only time I ever listened to Rush Limbaugh was an episode where he started out with the summary “Democrats are opposed to only teaching abstinence in health class” and spent the rest of the segment repeating it without “only” and ranting about it.

A lot of us, me included, thought Biden was out-of-touch with how politics works today. I’m happy to say I was wrong. What he has accomplished legislatively with zero margin for error in the Senate is remarkable. If Biden runs for reelection, I will proudly vote for him again.

Had they been issued a bed, they’d complain about the fee. They’re Conservatives, so they want special treatment without paying for it.

North Korea gets rid of mouths it can’t feed, and Putin gets more bodies to throw into the meat grinder.

Of course, I’d say chances of that actually being a thing are slim and none, because there’s no way North Korea has the forces to spare, and those sent out of North Korea will never want to return home. Desertion would be a huge thing.

WPLN: Abortion wasn’t on the ballot, but it was on Tennessee minds

“I will never vote for someone — Democrat, Independent or Republican — who tells me I don’t have a right to govern my own body.”

This woman is a Republican. I’d bet my drawing hand on it.

How do I know? Because only a Republican would both-sides abortion laws.

Police have changed their description of the crash that killed U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski (R-Ind.), saying Thursday that it was the SUV in which she was a passenger that crossed a state highway’s centerline and caused the head-on collision.

Walorski and two members of her congressional staff died in the Wednesday afternoon crash in northern Indiana, along with the woman driving the other vehicle, the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office said.

The department’s initial account was that the car driven by Edith Schmucker, 56, Nappanee, Ind., crossed into the SUV’s path, but the office released a statement Thursday saying investigators had talked with witnesses and viewed video evidence that their preliminary determination of which direction the vehicles were traveling was incorrect.

I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it a thousand times: If the punishment for breaking a law is a fine, then that law only exists for the poor.

Unless the fines are income-based. A law like that in Finland resulted in the head of Nokia getting a €116,000 speeding ticket.

If they’re Trump worshippers, or other people _completely_ lost to the Democrats, a vote for Yang is better than a vote for someone who will support a Republican majority or a blocking Republican minority.

Promoting Yang amongst them is a great idea, except….

Vanity centrist candidates pull 5 times as many people away from Democrats as from Republicans, and promotion amongst Republicans (unless he’s being promoted as someone hard right), will hurt Democrats more.

So those of us who are democracy supporters (liberals, centrists, moderates, and conservatives) should do everything to lower the voice Yang gets. Or at least point out all the negatives, the fact he’s being bankrolled by the GOP.

I have left mine on. I still think the car (Subaru Impreza) is too “chirpy” and there are other things that the automatic systems do that I dislike.

I also tend to use the cruise control on 2-lane highways in certain areas that are fairly rural and with not much traffic. Set it to the speed limit or just over the limit.

I haven’t had a jackass pass me in a clear “bad spot” or well-marked No Passing zone for a number of years. And I have a lot more patience getting places than I used to have.

The screams of your passengers usually wake you up if you fall asleep behind the wheel, but maybe that came too late, or the passengers were also asleep. Was this a long road trip?

This is just stunning. Unfuckingbelievable.

I am stunned.

The talk from the past 48 hours about how Alex Jones’ phone was given over to plaintiffs was really underplaying what was actually handed over. It was the entire contents of the hard drive of the defense lawyer Pattis, who represents Jones, a bunch of Proud Boy 1/6 defendants, and one of Jones’ employees.

To say that they’re all fucked is understating.

To say that the 1/6 Commission is interested in all this is understating things.

To say that the DOJ isn’t looking on intently is understating.

This is a big fucking deal.

This is the kind of thing that all those right wingers saying “Hunter Biden laptop” wish that laptop hard drive actually was/contains.

First thing people do with lane assist is to turn it off.

I switched mine off for few years but decided to turn it back on a couple years ago. Rather have the annoyance than to drift— and any kind of distraction can lead to this. Talking on the phone (legally), talking to a passenger in the vehicle, changing the station on the radio, thinking about something other than the road etc. Of course it wouldn’t have helped with the accident a decade ago that was my fault — when I rear-ended a vehicle stopped in front of me.

I’m pretty sure there’s going to be a legal fight over that - some contents may be privileged as work product or attorney client privilege, but some of that may be challenged for crime fraud exception. Other pieces will be held confidential and not subject to release, such as medical records.

But ultimately, I think we’re going to see bulk of these contents in the free and clear.

*facepalm*

Does their lawfirm’s IT not have enough competence to say buy a new flash drive (or 20) for every set of data you need to hand off to a different parties in different court cases for discovery.
Can’t a half way competent law firm just add $1000 for 20 Flash drives as a billable item?
Or are the lawyers and/or Alex Jones trying to do things on the cheap?

I presume we’re not talking about petabytes of data here, just terabytes?
Edit: It’s only 300 gigabytes

Or are there standards, certified vendors, etc, based on the jurisdiction that drive up the costs?

I think Gov. Newsom is incorrect in his assessment: I’m sure Fox News will cover this economic news from CA: but likely in a completely negative manner, though. Probably focusing on “skyrocketing rents”, “exorbitant” gas prices, “confiscatory” tax rates, and the usual “crime and homelessness out control” memes, etc. etc…..

I mean, there IS a grain of truth in it all: the COL in California is higher than a lot of places in the US: but then again, that’s what you have to pay to live in a truly First World economy. Though Republicans will never admit it……

How much of an opening do you think it would give them for a claim of ineffective counsel when it comes appeal time? Or is that now really a possibility given the nature of what happened?

You get what you pay for?

Whoever was managing the data transfer didn’t pay attention to the transfer size, what was being handed over, and then when the plaintiff lawyer indicated that there was stuff that he wasn’t originally entitled to in this forum (setting aside that he was entitled to the Jones specific stuff in discovery that Jones refused to cooperate with), Jones’ lawyer didn’t respond in the time required, so the data came into the free and clear.

That’s what’s mind boggling - they didn’t bother to check what was handed over and realize that this was the whole fucking shebang. And when notified of what was done, they didn’t do anything to rectify.

From the sound of it - this would have happened no matter the process involved - dropbox, flash drives, etc..

re: #122 RoJo Must Go!

In which case?

This drive involves multiple cases and multiple parties.

Jones was required to hand over documents for discovery and refused. I don’t think Jones can claim ineffective counsel on those.

Jones could argue ineffective counsel for what happens next - that he was screwed by the release opening him up to perjury, 1/6 investigation, prosecution re: 1/6 etc.

Until we see what’s specifically involved with those other parties/cases, I don’t know. It’s going to be a free-for-all, and all those 1/6 related cases will likely see those defendants/movants seek to quash the documents delivered, but not sure if they’ll be successful.

There’s a part of me saying I can see that:

The police raid of Breonna Taylor’s home that ended with police killing her was connected to a political plan to clear a Louisville, Kentucky, street for a real estate development, according to an amended lawsuit filed by Taylor’s mother.
Taylor, a 26-year-old EMT, was shot eight times after police broke down the door to her apartment while executing a nighttime, no-knock warrant in a narcotics investigation on March 13. Her mother filed a wrongful death lawsuit in April against the officers involved: Brett Hankison, Myles Cosgrove and Jonathan Mattingly.
The Louisville Metro Police Department has since fired Hankison, one of the officers who fired into the apartment.
***
Mayor Greg Fischer is mentioned in the lawsuit but is not a defendant. The lawsuit claims that Fischer wanted to incorporate large-scale development in west Louisville to leave a visible legacy for his time in office, which is currently set to expire in January 2023. A recent development initiative, called Vision Russell, intends to redevelop the Beecher Terrace public housing complex. The lawsuit says the effort has stagnated for six years.
Vision Russell’s website refers to itself as a Choice Neighborhood Initiative project designed to “implement a dynamic and transformative plan for the Russell neighborhood, including the Beecher Terrace public housing development.”
Representatives with the Vision Russell initiative did not return CNN’s request for comment.

When I was in college, the campus was split between GH (General Hospital) and GL (Guiding Light). Both came on at 3pm. Everyone knew where to go to watch (ie,. the student lounge in some dorms you could watch GH and other dorms you would watch GL). The daily campus newspaper ran summaries of each soap. It was likely that you would be asked which one you watched as party small talk.

I have billions of organisms living in and on me that are “not my body”.

They all depend upon me for life. They have their own bodies (mostly single celled but the fungi on my skin and nails may be more than single cells.)

And… so what?

imagine a one day old zygote.
yes it may be ‘life’ and even human life.
it is not ‘a’ human life, but i digress.
for practical purposes it is a potential life.
so many things have to happen, and ALL of them correctly, for that clump of cells to turn into a fetus that is successfully born.

and anytime in that entire process, if it fails, up to and including the birth, nothing happens to anybody. We allow it to fail without punishment. Unborn are not certainties. (yes i know some want to change that)

now imagine someone arguing, like in a court, that this 1 day old zygote should have more and superior protections and rights than the actually, certainly living citizen ‘hosting’ it, while standing before the court.

Pretty impressive response for Alabama, considering it was anti-black racism.

The racist comment shared on text did not surprise Vincent residents, said Kenneth Dukes, president of the NAACP Shelby County branch, who credited public pressure for the council action.

“This has happened before, they’ve had this kind of attitude and conduct that’s been displayed before (by police),” Dukes said Friday. “A lot of citizens were just fed up and came together in strong numbers.”

A lot of young people, male mostly, are buying into this idea that their precious European heritage is being corrupted by Hollywood, in the current case Rings of Power.

This is one of the resentments that feeds Trumpism.

Other resentments are:
- rural folk resenting the urban folk;
- fundamentalists resenting those satanic atheists;
- poor people resenting those rich elite at fancy universities.

This is politics in the US in 2021.

The Tolkien books aren’t mythologies.

They are, by design, faux histories.

Thing is, all the creatures, and that includes elves and dwarves, are reworks by Tolkien to put his own ideological spins on them.

Werewolves, zombies - Tolkien threw in all sorts of things. Changelings, talking trees, etc. All these things are just fantasy.

That so many young people seem to not really be willing, or able, to see that their imagination of what they read is just that - theirs - and that other people may interpret things differently, is I guess par for the course of being young.

But when older people keep up that same attitude I have to wonder what other agendas are going on under the hood.

Prince Naveen has to appeal to Charlotte the White Girl and while Disney elided the racism of that time period they couldn’t ignore it altogether, therefore Prince Naveen is sorta kinda I dunno South Asian? but he has a Brazilian accent because South Asian accents are nerdy.

I’m surprised. Punitive damages has to be unanimous in Texas, and I understood that there were one or two Jones sympathizers on the jury, based on the questions.

maybe the two weren’t sympathizers, perhaps they thought yesterday’s damages amounts were too low (much as many of us here thought).

Absolutely nauseating. Bisbee is such a wonderful place, too bad that yet another depraved religion is doing the same crap.

are the other 2 upcoming cases also in Texas? Or does he have to worry what a Connecticut jury might say?

I am absolutely stunned. I was not expecting that at all and was sure the Jones supporters would sabotage the verdict. Maybe the modest 4 million was to leave money available for the other pending lawsuits. Yay!!

I dropped this here yesterday. A true horror story.

Seven years of sex abuse: How Mormon officials let it happen
The Associated Press has obtained nearly 12,000 pages of sealed records from a child sex abuse lawsuit against the Mormon church.

Yeah, it’s a horror story and the PR people who run the Twitter account for the church formerly known as Mormon are busy playing games. They have posted the same set of tweets three times, and deleted those tweets twice, partially because the language in the first set of tweets was not obfuscatory enough and the second set of tweets accidentally left replies on. People are keeping track, though.

This is the church formerly known as Mormon’s Come to Jesus moment, they’re flailing around and failing badly.

That’s the thing. They do, but apparently Palin is so lazy she hasn’t learned the new material, so she just regurgitated the crap she remembered from the last time anyone cared what she thought.

While I would love to see Straka and Greene imprisoned in a cage for real, it was better political theater when Patrick McGoohan and Leo McKern did it in the penultimate episode of the Prisoner.

The original cat toy butterflies have a freely turning shaft and embellishments that look like small fan blades that make the shaft bounce, making the butterfly spin and flutter.

The “replacements,” which are obviously 3rd party, have a fixed shaft that’s embedded into a smooth base, so they just whirl around silently.

I pulled a shaft from a replacement with pliers and installed it into an old base to make the toy attractive to my cats again.
