Edwards: Biggest Threat Isn't Israel

Tue, Feb 20, 2007 at 6:43:31 pm PST

John Edwards would like you all to know that he did not, I repeat, did NOT, actually mean to say that Israel is a threat to world peace: Edwards: Israel NOT a threat to world peace.

What he meant to say, see, was that Iran shouldn’t have nuclear weapons! It just sorta came out wrong.

WASHINGTON John Edwards’ presidential campaign wants to make it clear that he doesn’t consider Israel a threat to world peace.

A spokesman for the 2008 Democratic candidate issued a statement today denying such a report on Variety.com.

Columnist Peter Bart reports that Edwards told a Hollywood fundraiser last month that the possibility that Israel would bomb Iran’s nuclear facilities is perhaps the greatest short-term threat to world peace.

Edwards’ spokesman Jonathan Prince says the article is erroneous. He says Edwards says one of the greatest short-term threats to world peace is Iran acquiring a nuclear weapon.

Bart and the host of the fundraiser, Adam Venit of the Endeavor talent agency, didn’t immediately respond to messages for comment.

Earlier today at LGF:
Edwards: Biggest Threat is Israel

I just wonder when Hillary will assimilate this flipperian discourse tactic. It appears to be quite common in Democratic circles.

"Do you want a drink?"
"No."
"OK."
"Could I please get a drink?"
"But you said you didn't want to."
"I meant yes when saying no."
"Really?"
"Yes."

**A conversation the day after Edwards made the Anti-Israel remark**

(Aide) Mr. Edwards, it seems that the majority of the United States wasn't very impressed with your comments about the evil Zionist state of Israel being "the largest threat to world peace".

(Edwards) What? I don't get it?....I've had this conversation a thousand times.... it always goes over well with my base and with my friends.... I'm confused.

(Aide) Yea my friends thought it was pretty right on too...don't know what to tell you sir.

what's more insulting, edward's statement villifying israel or his clarification that it's not what he meant to say?

just total bullshit - - he has a speech writer, yes? i assume edward's himself or someone on his staff would proofread any written speech before it's given, right? wouldn't he prepare for a new speech by reading it out loud so he can polish his oration with some emphasis here or drama there? if it were at all possible that the very first time he read his speech was as it appeared on the teleprompter, doesn't he have the presence of mind and innate understanding of his views to pause, mid speech, and correct any erroneous wording as henious as this?

give me a fucking break, edwards.

It sounds like Edwards is taking his cues from the radical Islamic Imams. Say one thing to the faithful, and the exact opposite to the media. He is going to catch hell over this from the blogs. The media will ignore the original statement. It was taken out of context and Edwards spin doctors have corrected the misunderstanding.

In debate or rhetoric, the slippery slope is an argument for the likelihood of one event or trend given another.

In democratic reasoning, the flippery slope is an argument for the certainty of one statement given the opposite one.

He is unbelievably bad. Not smart. Not a good speaker. In short, he is an empty suit. As a liberal he had home field advantage against Newt. Within 5 minutes, the whole place (almost all Jews) switched from him to Newt. It was unbelievably. I have never seen a nationally known politician lose a crowd so fast in my life. It was like watching Norton become the fastest knockout in boxing history (what was it? 17 seconds?). That is what Edwards did.

And as luck would have it, Genius at large Ashton Kutcher was there. Please, someone put a microphone in his grill and ask him about the nuances in Edward's speech. That could make for some great comedy.

Among those who attended the event, hosted by Endeavor's Adam Venit and former MCA and iFilm executive Skip Paul, were Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher, Diane Keaton, Tracy Ullman, Delroy Lindo and Mike White.

Why anyone would vote democrat, that doesn't collect social services or is GLBT, is beyond me.

Even my woman finally turned. It took a healthy raise in her salary, and being forced to pay the tax man this year to do it. "What? I pay too much in taxes already? What the hell do they do with all my money?"

OT I don't know if anyone has seen this doozy yet but
Daily Kos: Fuck the Constitution
[Link: www.dailykos.com...]

"Why do people rely so much on the U.S.Constitution? I have seen comments on this site that have said, to effect, “only one thing is non-negotiable: the Constitution” and diaries that have based their whole premise on “defend the Constitution”; President Bush is said to be an evil, evil person because he “violated the Constitution.” Heck, we might as well all pack our bags now and head over to the Constitution Party.
This, treating the Constitution as a sort of sacred document, a civil religion, is stupid…

Ultimately, it is the Constitution that exists to serve us, “we the people,” not vice versa. To reduce what is important in our country to only the words of the Constitution is to denigrate all the great Americans, living and dead, who have come since that flawed document and make this country, substantively, what it is, and what it will be."

I was on the Live Chat at Edward's blog tonight and that's not what his followers believe... When asked, one poster said we should pull out of the ME, apologize to them, and imprison our leaders, and that would be a good start... Others were of the opinion we could 'talk' our way out of hostilities...

Edwards is finished, and his blog only shows how deluded his followers are...

And about the nukes in the ME, I saw more concern over Israel having them than Iran.... What is wrong with some people? Israel has had nukes since what, the 70's? Have they nuked anyone yet? NO!

If Iran gets a nuke...... I doubt the leaders there would hold onto it so long.....

87 cbinflux  Tue, Feb 20, 2007 5:17:10pm

Israel's Biggest Threat? Death from within!

Israel tries to increase immigration

JERUSALEM — Israel is offering new incentives to attract more American immigrants in response to its steadily declining Jewish majority.

Immigration is at an 18-year-low, and members of Israel's Arab minority are having children at a faster rate than Jews. Some lawmakers are keen to protect Israel's identity as a predominantly Jewish state.

The drop in immigration is of great concern, said Aryeh Eldad, an Israeli parliament member with the National Union Party. "This will no doubt have a negative effect on the demographic balance in the country," he said.

God said to multiply.

Honorary degrees are as worthless as Nobel Feces Prizes, Oscars, and knighthoods: they are all based on two things...

1) Politics, or

2) Celebrity status

We live in a world in which Kermit the Frog once gave a commencement address at an university graduation and actors (who cannot stay out of rehab, off the plastic surgeon's operating table, and out of divorce court) are treated with awe and respect when they pontificate about national defense from gilded mansions where they have to have their imported bottled water at precisely ______ degrees.

Gambia's president claims he can cure AIDS using herbs and bananas

FROM the pockets of his billowing white robe, Gambia's president pulls out a plastic container, closes his eyes in prayer and rubs a green herbal paste on to the ribcage of his patient. He then orders the thin man to swallow a bitter yellow drink, followed by two bananas.

"Whatever you do there are bound to be sceptics, but I can tell you my method is foolproof," Yahya Jammeh says, surrounded by his bodyguards inside his presidential compound as he prepares to treat more patients.

"Mine is not an argument, mine is a proof. It's a declaration. I can cure AIDS, and I will."

All of these organizations sort of feed off each other, multiply in their own minds as they create various "peace" and "justice" organizations, about half of them traceable to a single address in lower Manhattan. I suspect they're funded by Fidel and more recently Chavez.

I've heard this stuff on shortwave for 40+ years now, and I think the FBI actually busted a couple in the Miami area a couple of years ago who were proven to be among the recipients of these coded messages.

Bart's article is full of contradictions and tell-tale signs of BDS. Much more to do with him than Edwards. One sees this a lot lately - out-of-the-blue cheap shots against Israel.

One of Bart's gems paraphrasing (probably incorrectly) The Economist: "...'knee jerk defensiveness' of Israel ultimately will erode support for that country around the world..."

It takes a sick f*** to see the logic of that statement. As if the "knee jerk defensiveness" of Santa Claus has somehow eroded support for him.

With worthless nutbags like Bart taking shots at him, maybe that Edwards fellow isn't so bad after all.

I think Edwards is a hapless nimrod outside a courtroom, but I think there's something funny about Bart's column.

Sounds fishy to me.

Google Newt's first divorce.

Then Google the second.

Doesn't stand a chance, too much hypocrisy and the DNC & 527s will have a field day with it. Especially the circumstances and timing of the second divorce when Billary was being impeached for lying about getting a hummer.

Are you sure that you want to do that? I mean, it's very honorable and I'm sure that you're physically fit enough, but it is a huge commitment for a 44 y/o.

That's the thing. I wish I did it at 39. I could have tossed my clothes and stored the guitars at a friend's place. I donated my last car to the Vietnam Vet's anyway, so that was an easy option, too. It would have been an easier thing to do, then. Now, I have commitments. I bought a house three years ago and immediately began stripping the woodwork and I'm still not even half done. A lot of the house is torn apart, so that means I'd be taking a major bath on the resale. I don't have family nearby so there's no option of having someone take care of the place while I'm gone. Still paying on the Jeep, too.

Still, all that seems like a small commitment to my country. I'm just really starting to wish I'd served when I was way younger (seriously, I would have made a crappy soldier back then). But I'd probably be there, now.

I've also thought about the CIA, if that's what Killian Bundy is talking about in "civilian branches." I've looked into it, but seriously, there are some things in my past the CIA would not look kindly on (no arrests, no convictions, just lifestyle, noam sayin?), judging from their website. They also prefer military experience. Killian, I'd be interested in hearing more about that option. I'm a writer and marketing specialist, if that helps. Feel free to contact me through my blue nick.

Oh, and thanks for the birthday wishes, lizards.

So I wouldn't be at all surprised if Lizzy Kossack wasn't the one to put the "Israel is a threat" idea in the Breck Girl's head.

I just don't see him having a deep enough thought process to formulate such a crazy theory. It would be like a dog drawing a picture on an etch a sketch.

I think I know which America John Edwards is living in. These big-government dems take care of each other.

Erskine Bowles, Clinton's former Chief of Staff, is the President of the 16-campus University of North Carolina system. I suppose it's just coincidence that Edwards is now the Director of the Center on Poverty, Work & Opportunity at the UNC School of Law, since Feb 2005. Sure, it's only $40,000 a year gig (salary is paid "via private funds") but somehow he can afford a $6,000,000, 28,200 square foot mansion on a 102 acre estate in (leftwing) Chapel Hill, NC. Of course, he and his wife made $39 million in the past decade, even if 2003 was his worst earnings year in a decade, scraping by on only $300k thanks in part to a nifty S-corp strategy that allowed him to avoid paying nearly $600,000 in taxes.

Not bad for a Millworker'sowner's son.

There's no age limit for the USCG. There is, however, a height minimum. You must be at least six feet. That way if the ship sinks, you can wade ashore.

Speaking as a blue-water USN sailor type, I can't speak poorly of the Coast Guard. Their offical motto is "Semper Paratus," which means "Always Ready," and they are. They sail in boats that wouldn't hold all of my paperwork, and they challenge angry seas that would make you seasick just to see it in an oil painting. In addition to battling the elements, they must also conduct law-enforcement duties, and at any second, a life-preserver inspection could turn into a running gun battle with international drug cartels.
Their unofficial motto is 'Ya gotta go out--ya don't gotta come back," and they always go out, and the don't always come back.
Six feet or no.

Did my bit with "U Suckers Missed Christmas" in the 60's. After 9/11, I called the navy recruiter as I thought the navy needed doctors. The recruiter told me (and I quote), "Sir, the ships aren't made of wood anymore." In a fit of pique, I called the Army recruiter. He told me not to move and that he could be there in 15 minutes. That was five years ago and two tours, one in A-stan and one in Iraq.

235 American Jewess in Jerusalem  Wed, Feb 21, 2007 4:26:10am

Can we see a video of the speech and hear for ourselves just exactly what he DID say? Because if his words were, in fact, distorted by a journalist, then that's important to know. If he's just pulling a John Kerry stunt and pretending that he didn't mean what he did, in fact, SAY, then it would be important to know that too.

Oh, hell, I guess it's not important at all. I'm not voting for him either way.

I don't know if it has been mentioned, but I find it very significant that
David Bonior, the Michigan Democrat who was labeled as one of the
Baghdad Democrats in 2002, is Edwards' campaign manager.

Mr. Bonior, however, earned a reputation in Congress as one of the least friendly members towards Israel. In 2002, for example, he was one of 21 lawmakers in the House to vote against House Resolution 292 expressing solidarity for the Jewish state after a year of bloody terrorist attacks.
