Canberra funds $2.5m anti-smacking campaign

A $2.5 million tax-payer funded campaign will warn parents not to smack their children.
The guidelines will be released by a child welfare agency supported by the federal government and will be available in 16 languages.

The Australian Childhood Foundation's website advises parents that smacking children teaches them that violence is acceptable later in life.

The website says: "Physical punishment causes pain to stop the behaviour. For example hitting a child with a hand or object," News Limited reports.

A soldier honored twelve times during his seven years in uniform, Town has spent the last three struggling with deafness, memory failure and depression. By September 2006 he and the Army agreed he was no longer combat-ready.

But instead of sending Town to a medical board and discharging him because of his injuries, doctors at Fort Carson, Colorado, did something strange: They claimed Town's wounds were actually caused by a "personality disorder." Town was then booted from the Army and told that under a personality disorder discharge, he would never receive disability or medical benefits.

Town is not alone. A six-month investigation has uncovered multiple cases in which soldiers wounded in Iraq are suspiciously diagnosed as having a personality disorder, then prevented from collecting benefits. The conditions of their discharge have infuriated many in the military community, including the injured soldiers and their families, veterans' rights groups, even military officials required to process these dismissals.

They say the military is purposely misdiagnosing soldiers like Town and that it's doing so for one reason: to cheat them out of a lifetime of disability and medical benefits, thereby saving billions in expenses.

Do another massacre poster with a 50 year timeline of Islamist terror, and the size of your art installation with be the rival of one of Christo's works -- on the scale of "The Gates" or when he surrounded Biscayne Bay with massive sheets of pink fabric. CONTROVERSIAL Mufti Sheik Taj Eldeen Alhilaly could be endorsed as the spiritual leader of Australia's Muslim community at a major meeting of imams today.

I've come to the conclusion that the people who believe in this tripe have absolutely no grasp of history. Just reading a book does not a scholar make. They believe the first things that they read, then look for more to reinforce that original thesis. There is no critical thinking here at all.

If they did study history, they would see most of the Palestinian problems are of their own making, starting in 1947 when they listened to their Arab neighbors and left their homes in Israel with the promise of their land being returned after the destruction of Israel. That never happened.

The Palestinians are afflicted with the "victim" mentality, and their leaders aren't in any hurry to solve any problems. Instead, they seek to play demagogue. God forbid if any individuals solve their own problems.

IIRC, over 20 years ago, they tried to ease it in...no one wanted it. Ask our Canadian and British posters how half and half they are, after many years. It would actually be easier if we were on metric, as all the products we ship out of the US have to be metric and standard..and it costs a fortune..the weight, temps, etc, in metric, are far more logical, IMHO, as they are based on units of 10.

I've come to the conclusion that the people who believe in this tripe have absolutely no grasp of history. Just reading a book does not a scholar make. They believe the first things that they read, then look for more to reinforce that original thesis. There is no critical thinking here at all.

What I find bizarre is that Israel should be supported 100% by the lefties. Israel is a reclamation of land by people who have a historical claim to the area, it started with indelibly socialist agricultural settlements, had a U.N. mandate for its founding, and its people engaged in tooth and nail grassroots warfare against both Colonialist and Fascist-allied powers to take root and survive. In light of the Holocaust, moreover, in its earliest stages it can be seen as a refugee resettlement project.

That's what, five items on the Leftist Legitimacy Checklist? And that doesn't touch on Israel's "multiculturalism", i.e. accepting scads of Jews from all walks of life and all parts of the planet - even black jews - while trying to maintain good relations with the Arabs... Arabs who moved to Israel to find jobs in the first place, because the Zionists made an otherwise barren patch of Nothing into a successful, prosperous country.

So what's the problem?

I don't hate the Metric system as much as you, but there's one thing I never understood.

In school I was taught that pounds measure weight on earth only, but that somehow the metric system was able to measure mass using kilograms. Its like the metric system was given some magical power.

Can anybody explain how this works?

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa - Ian Tapson, one of the last survivors of a team of World War II soldiers who planned and executed a breakout from a German POW camp later immortalized in the film "The Great Escape," has died. He was 84.

Tapson died at Settler's Park, a retirement complex in the coastal town of Port Alfred on March 31, said Wally Vandermeulen, chairman of the Port Alfred branch of the South Africa Air Force Association.

The escape was immortalized in Paul Brickhill's book "The Great Escape" and in the movie of the same title, starring Steve McQueen, James Garner and Richard Attenborough.

Tapson was a lieutenant in the South African Air Force flying Kittyhawk fighter-bombers when his plane was crippled by anti-aircraft fire over Tunisia and he was forced to crash-land. He was captured and was sent to Stalag III prisoner of war camp at Sagan, Silesia, near the Polish border.

South African born-Roger Bushell, a squadron leader, decided to organize a mass escape by tunneling to a point outside the perimeter fence.

The team members were all volunteers, and 20-year-old Tapson was one of them. His job was to scrounge for wood to shore up the tunnels. "He stole planks off the beds," Vandermeulen said.

Before an alarm was raised, 76 men managed to escape, but only three reached safety. Fifty of those recaptured were shot in a field by the Gestapo.

I have so many memories, and still have the sweater with the emblem on the sleeve with the school name, and am in touch with 5 friends, one of whom married an American, and lives in Houston. We lived mostly in La Colonia Justo Sierra. It was all middle class, and fairly new, I think.

I agree re total immersion...it is like the Ulpan program in Israel, for new citizens. I had taken a year of Spanish in middle school, taught by a teacher with a Boston accent, and in Castilian, no less..we really were not taught to speak Spanish, and using Castilian? Ridiculous. In essence I had to start from scratch when I went to Mexico, and the letter of acceptance, and the one from the family I would live with? They had to be translated for me. :)

I still speak enough Spanish to talk to people and to read. It is such a beautiful language.

The problem is, there are so many more variants that could be specific to blog vs. message boards. All those that Reed made up really assume everyone is registered in the same forum. I used to debate this point physics instructor when he scolded me in lab for calling "mass" weights on the scale.

However, in a weightless environment like space, you would be weightless but you could still measure a mass. The best example I can think of would be inertia in space. In space, if the shuttle hits a floating wrench, it will still knock a hole thru the wing.

By the way, we already use the metric system to a great degree in America. You can't work in the medical field, and get away from the metric system.

I wish we would have adopted it years ago. It's much better now that I've used it to a great degree. Anything in a scale of base 10 is far superior for making simple calculation.

Well, I think of myself as a bit of an x-factor in here. Unilke many of the lizards, I didn't wait long to join in. In fact, I had never seen the site until the day I joined. I was going through Malkin's blogroll one day, saw LGF, clicked, and registered. I kinda stumbled in here.

As for Kos, I didn't join until I saw the umpteenth LGF thread about them, so I went over to see what the hubub was about. I've posted a handful of diaries (mostly about Bush and Iraq). Don't post much. Frankly, I think it's just too crowded in there, and the layout is kinda hard to get used to.

These days, I mostly hang out here, post on a few random sites, or work on my blog. I use the same handle whenever I post on a blog or a message board.

I do feel more welcome here these days, I'll admit. I've gone from being called 'asshat' or 'shitbird moby' to simply 'stupid' now lol. It's probably the lounge.

Is it weird if I say I don't believe in the triple point of matter? Its the actual (not theoretical) environment where matter exists in all three forms: liquid, gas and solid at the same time.

I'm sure it really does exist out there, but I have a hard time understanding it and thus I say I don't believe in it.
