Video: Gregg Says Obama Will Bankrupt America

Politics • Views: 2,551

Republican Senator Judd Gregg, who withdrew as Barack Obama’s Commerce Secretary, says Obama’s economic policies will bankrupt the country. But at the same time, he praises Obama’s policies for restoring the banking system to health. It’s not clear how these two contradictory opinions can be reconciled.

It means that the bankruptcy will be “managed” competently.

Charles,
Perhaps Senator Judd Gregg meant our economy can use a little chemotherapy, but NOT an overdose.

Friend of mine says she is glad those AIG execs are getting punitively taxed. I asked her how she would feel if Obama taxed her bonus at work for political reasons. She couldn’t figure out how that was related at all.

*Sigh*

Maybe that means that they are arranging for creditors to be protected in an orderly wind down. That is good for the Chinese, the Europeans, and Soros. Who can offload their paper onto future American generations at artificially inflated prices.

re: #4 simonml

A bankrupt bank is a healthy bank?

It sure is, according to the FDIC, at least:

Community bank finds paranoid a smart bet

Joseph A. Petrucelli is one of the most cautious bankers in America.

In fact, Petrucelli is so cautious that the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. recently criticized his bank for not lending enough.

The FDIC’s negative review of East Bridgewater Savings Bank’s loan volume is an anomaly in today’s current banking scene as lenders reel from their role in offering too many cruddy mortgage products to borrowers with weak credit.

Still, the FDIC slapped East Bridgewater Savings with a rare “needs to improve” rating after evaluating the bank under the Community Reinvestment Act.

From late 2003 through mid-2008, East Bridgewater Savings averaged 28 cents in loans for every dollar in deposit. The average loan-to-deposit ratio among similar size savings banks is more than 90 percent, FDIC data show.

FDIC Criticizes Massachusetts Bank With No Bad Loans for Being Too Cautious

A Massachusetts bank that has defied the odds and remained free of bad loans amid the economic crisis is now being criticized by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. for the cautious business practices that caused its rare success.

The secret behind East Bridgewater Savings Bank’s accomplishments is the careful approach of 62-year-old chief executive Joseph Petrucelli.

“We’re paranoid about credit quality,” he told the Boston Business Journal.

That paranoia has allowed East Bridgewater Savings Bank to stand out among a flurry a failing banks, with no delinquent loans or foreclosures on its books, the Journal reported. East Bridgewater Savings didn’t even need to set aside in money in 2008 for anticipated loan losses.

But rather than reward Petrucelli’s tactics, the FDIC recently criticized his bank for not lending enough, slapping it with a “needs to improve” rating under the Community Reinvestment Act, the Journal reported.

Bizarre

The bank plan is designed to get the toxic assets off the bank balance sheets in the near term so the credit markets will unfreeze, a vital step if we’re ever going to climb out of this recession. The Obama budget is a behemoth plan for long term Federal spending that will more than triple the deficit and add many trillions to our national debt.

OT: Here’s an idea. If the government can tax AIG bonus receivers at 90% - I want Jamie Gorelick and Franklin Raines (both made millions upon millions before Fannie and Freddie collapsed) to pay it back too.
If that’s what our government is all about now. why not go after the big fish?
Why stop at AIG? /

How about imposing a 90% tax on the income over $100,000 of some of the people who caused this mess? Perhaps not at the top of most lists, but fairly near the top, should be Christopher Dodd, Barney Frank, and the leaders of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and ACORN.

3 Wood could probably explain Gregg’s comments better but I’ll take a stab at it…..
He’s saying that Geitner and the Federal Reserve are doing a good job at stabilizing the banking system. As far as I know they are responsible for lowering interest rates and the plan to buy up the toxic assets (bad bank loans) from the banks.

He criticizes Obama’s stimulus, which gave money to things other than the banks, and Obama’s budget.

I strongly suspect his doom and gloom opinion of Obama’s budget is a bit overblown.

We will soon be asking the counsel of the Zimbabwean government on how to handle inflation.

Comandante Obama
The president has made America look like a banana republic.

“But you don’t understand,” the Colombian said. “We’ve seen this before.”

“He’s right, my good friend,” the Cuban said. “We Latin Americans know the pattern. Believe me we do.”

The American tried to shrug off the Latin Americans’ warning. To his consternation, he found that he couldn’t. Peron, Fidel, now Chavez, they insisted. The emergence of misrule, corruption and economic stagnation in Latin American nations follows a particular sequence or progression. Now the sequence was unfolding in the United States.

“It starts with a cult of personality,” the Cuban explained. “One man declares himself the jefe, the caudillo, the big leader.”

Had Obama attempted to instigate something like a cult of personality? The American found the charge impossible to refute. During the campaign, Obama had failed to advance a genuine agenda, instead campaigning on “hope” and “change.” In effect, he had asked Americans to turn the nation over to him on blind faith. He would, he promised, transcend racial and partisan divides in his very person.

93 Syrah  Sun, Mar 22, 2009 11:45:18am
It’s not clear how these two contradictory opinions can be reconciled.

Its an example of the kind of thinking that made the Republican Party get trounced so thoroughly after they had won both houses in congress and the presidency. Gregg is expressing how he is in favor of spending great heaping gobs of money like there is no tomorrow, just not as aggressively as Obama is doing it. His is not a philosophical disagreement with Obama so much as it is one of degree.

3He’s saying that Geitner and the Federal Reserve are doing a good job at stabilizing the banking system.

That’s it, I assume.

When the feds give banks money, and the banks hide it in a vault just so their reserves are now legal (and are only illegal because of the mark to market rule), then no harm is done. Presuming, that is, that the money is repaid when (and if) the old reserves regain their value. Doesn’t much matter if the feds get that money by borrowing or printing it, especially if the banks pay interest on the “loans”.

As soon as you try these tricks, either borrowing or printing, to spend on bridges or health care, you have an entirely different situation.

(or, btw, if the money is given out in bonuses - anything that gets the loans out of the vaults, is hazardous, other than its use as reserves for normal lending.)

(where it gets complicated is when the feds start whining about the fact that nobody wants to buy collateralized credit card obligations about now)

130 Racer X  Sun, Mar 22, 2009 11:55:24am

I have been thinking about the whole “who’s to blame” thing (yes, it does matter). It breaks down into two categories:

1. Democrats wrote legislation that promoted and encouraged lenders to make high risk loans. Democrats enacted policies that PUNISHED lenders who did not meet their high risk loan quota.

2. Republicans did not do enough to put checks and balances in place to keep this system from getting out of control (like it now has). Any Republican politician who questioned these practices was called a greedy capitalist, or in some cases was flat-out called a racist.

Anyone who says both parties are to blame is ignoring the facts.

re: #135 FrogMarch

Those are well done. Not mentioned, however, is how the left-wing political class, namely Barney Frank - pushed for risky loans. Our own government had a huge hand in the credit crisis.

No, that one is more to describe the process.

There are a few that go into more detail, as I posted in another thread:

gmsc’s money tips #20:

With the current financial crisis happening, anything else you do with your money is going to be affected by it. The more you understand it, the better.

The best way to start is to forget names of the parties involved, and understand the process as a whole. Jonathan Jarvis has put together a well-received video that describes the process that happened, called The Crisis of Credit Visualized, which is just over 11 minutes long. It’s also available in YouTube, broken up into Part 1 and Part 2.

Once you’ve got your head around the process itself, it’s time to learn about the particular parties involved in the building of the financial crisis. Not surprisingly, with the government involved, these details get political very quickly. The blame gets placed on Republicans or on Democrats, and quickly escalates to capitalism vs. socialism. Take a look at the approach used by FOX News’ Saving Our Economy: What’$ Next? versus that of NPR’s Bad Bank episode of This American Life.

The best approach, however, is to delve into the principles behind the personalities and the politics. John Allison, the chairman of the board of BB&T Corporation and the longest-tenured CEO of any top-25 financial services company, gives an interesting 90-minute talk delving into the principles that started this mess longer ago than you may think. The talk’s slides are available as a PDF, which helps make this talk much easier to digest.

re: #130 Racer X

I was thinking the same thing recently. The ads for interest-only loans I always thought were misleading. There are legitimate uses for them, like someone I know who used it as a bridge when he bought a new house but hadn’t sold the old one yet, but they were obviously being marketed to people who were getting into something they couldn’t afford.
It collapsed more quickly, and more severely, than I thought, but I wondered why regulators weren’t going after such loans. Now I know they were encouraging them so people could own houses [that they’d lose a couple of years later].

This will bankrupt the country but I’ve gotta blame Bush for starting the ball rolling in this. The whole bailout concept leaves has one very obvious problem:

Government bailout of failed business ventures already exists, it’s called bankruptcy. This is nationalization and it’s what communist countries do. You know, the ones where people don’t have enough food to eat and only the rich own cars? That communism.

The Democrats probably still can’t believe their good fortune. They destroy the economy by threatening the banking industry if it doesn’t make bad loans that make Democrats feel good, they blame it on the Republicans for not regulating the fallout of those bad loans and get elected to total power as a result. Then the Republicans under Bush hand them the key to making this country socialist. Eliminate the free capital system by saddling yet unborn taxpayers with trillions in debt.

Hey future generations, think you might want to have the 4 day work week that computers and technology could easily facilitate? Maybe you’d like to build a self sustaining colony on Mars. How about expanding the upper class?

Forget about it. You’ll spend your life paying for the wrecked society that the Woodstock generation left you.

What does Greg mean Obama will bankrupt America?
Greg, Obama has already done more to cancel the last decades of earnings of retirees, those soon to retire and current wage earners 401K plans. All of the 1980s and 1990s gloom and doom by the Democrats that the Republicans will hurt seniors and the Social Security system does not even begin to compare with the actual loss of future income in retirement accounts being caused by the Obama administrations current economic policies. Those who are retired or that will retire in the next few years can only hope that the next congress in 2010 and the next president in 2012 will be able to undo some of the irresponsible fiscal decisions being made today by the Democratic led band of “Potomac Pirates” who don’t understand the value of money unless it is packed in a freezer in New Orleans or is an unpaid amount of a tax bill of an Obama administration nominee.
