If you bought into the idea that the stimulus was a jobs package… you might be a ________.
The Administration’s disdain for American taxpayers is palpable. US energy policy is a joke, and Obama ratchets things up a notch by dropping all pretense that this is about jobs. It’s about taxing and spending on Democrats’ pet projects and to throw the money to districts that favored Democrats. It always was.
In fact, if this Administration were serious about alternative energy and upgrading the power grid, it would have done more to make sure that multibillion dollar plans from folks like Pickens’ wouldn’t end up as so much hot air because they couldn’t get those transmission lines routed to where the projects were planned or to set up the financing to see those deals through.

House Dems look at taxing the rich for health care
This dovetails neatly with Charles’ topic. At the same time this administration is “slowly” moving away from the idea of the energy legislation creating jobs, these morons are proposing to increase taxes on the very people who could actually create jobs.
It does go to the idea Thomas Sowell posits in “Basic Economics” that government can’t control “tax revenue”, they can only control “tax rates”. There’s no way they can calculate how much - if any - additional revenue will be generated by this tax surcharge.
But, you can bet your ass it will have a chilling effect on job creation - and that damn energy legislation will pretty much finish us off.

They’re hiring for the NY state legislature, so it can’t all be bad!
During the long years of Republican control, the all-white GOP “conference” would regularly bemoan its lack of diversity, and make extra efforts to recruit minority Senate candidates and hire minority staff.
During the first five months of this year, with the Senate under the control of its first African-American majority leader, Smith, top Democrats bemoaned the lack of minority Senate staffers.
But instead of trying to recruit new hires, they fired nearly 200 almost exclusively white workers and replaced them with a large number of minority employees, many of whom were seen by their fellow workers to be unskilled at their new jobs.
The move produced severe racial tensions, made worse by the fact that, as a high-level Democratic staffer confided, “We’ve been told to only hire minorities.”

Jobs created or saved is a BS metric. It was invented because the Administration - and Obama - knew that they couldn’t actually create jobs with the porkfest, which was treated as a jobs program.
And even still, they can’t admit that they were so horribly wrong on their projections for unemployment. They’re off by millions of jobs. They can say they saved or created 150,000 jobs in the same breath as the economy shed another 500k+ jobs. This graph tells the sad tale.

BTW, this is the way the stimulus bill retains jobs: The questionnaire, REQUIRED, of every primary and secondary recipient of stimulus money is asked to name all parties that participated in a transaction by occupation. Thus the purchase of a case of window caulk at True Value “saves” 3 jobs: the warehouseman, the sales clerk, and the stock person. Even though that single purchase ampounted to a fraction of total revenue.

I think they believed that the economy would eventually recover on its own and they could then take credit for it. In the meantime, they didn’t want to waste a good crisis so they set upon the lib pet projects they have wanted for ages. Plus, they started to dole out the money they needed to keep their base voters happy. Tax and spend - what a surprise.
However, reality being a bitch, business and the markets are scared witless over the massive taxes coming and the rebound of inflation to follow. Therefore, jobs still disappear and none are created.

I have stated before we are already in a depression, but the MSM refuses to say it and no economist wants to go out on that limb yet. Our economy has contracted by over 15-18% in less than one year depending on who is counting, real unemployment numbers when you count all people out of work, not just people drawing a check are over 17% and climbing and most likely will hit over 20% by fall. Imports and more importantly exports are tanking.

Spot on. This snippet from the article I linked above:
Ways and Means Chairman Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., has said his committee needs to come up with $600 billion in new taxes to deliver on Obama’s goal of sweeping changes to the nation’s health care system to bring down costs and cover the 50 million uninsured. Hundreds of billions of dollars more would come from cuts to Medicare and Medicaid to pay for legislation expected to cost around $1 trillion over 10 years.
You don’t get that without rationing, and as we know Medicare and Medicaid are programs for the elderly and the poor. Sucks to be either of those with Obama in charge.
I’m already one of those, and with what’s happening to the economy, will probably end up being both.

Is it the president’s job to create jobs? NO. It’s the president’s foremost job to protect this country’s freedom so that IT can create jobs.
A little OT, but a bit of positive history and remembrance never intrudes. IMO.
General Tommy Franks told us precisely how on Day One of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Few caught it. It was so very simple and so very brilliant and almost everyone thought it only applied to one objective; overthrowing Saddam Hussein. Remember what he said?
“We will close with and engage the enemy at a time and place of our choosing.”
It was genius and anyone in the United States who thought it only meant Saddam Hussein were rope-a-doped along with the new enemy. The American rope-a-dopers whose occupation it was to destroy George W Bush, unknowingly helped severely weaken the most difficult enemy faced by any state or alliance in human history.
Now how did we win and cripple for life this new enemy? Using their ideology against them, we lured them into a location in which we could engage them using our superior capabilities on a battlefield with which we were quite familiar. This enemy is a worldwide cancer and occupies not merely Afghanistan (an extremely difficult theater to say the least) but also the entire globe. It would have been impossible to go to several nations, cross their sovereign borders, find the terrorist hideouts then close with and engage them.
Imagine the worldwide hair lighting on fire had that happened. It was bad enough when yellow cake was hidden by glasses of mint tea in Niger from one of the Bush hating torches. Barney Frank would have gone straight, found his false teeth, worn them and lit his hair on fire if we invaded several nations. We didn’t. We drew them into Iraq and we killed them there. Simple and genius.
Even Barack Obama admitted it — and as usual, was clueless when he did so. Remember his pre-election interview on Fox News with Bill O’Reilly? Bill asked him if George W Bush was right about the surge and defeating al Qaeda in Iraq. Remember what Obama said?
“Before Bush invaded, there was no al Qaeda in Iraq.”
You got it Sun Tzu, er, I mean Mr. President. The strategery worked as planned, just like Tommy Franks said it would “at a time and place of OUR choosing.”
The enemy’s ideology drew him to attack American forces in Iraq with the intention to force an American loss. The more the mainstream media and Democrats celebrated each thousand American deaths, the more terrorists from all over the globe flocked to Iraq. Each worked with the other to further their own set of agendas and ideologies; one for political power and the other for twisted religious ideology. While doing so, we destroyed the enemy and their leaders, most going completely unreported. It was brilliant. So much so that they still haven’t figured it out because they simply do not have the ability to do so. The domestic opposition did however have the ability to take credit for W’s win last week, celebrating Iraqi victory over terrorism.
That is why I want to thank George W Bush and the military leaders who finally, finally after all the lost friends, lost Marines, lost three thousand plus Americans, had the courage and temerity to close with and engage this new enemy and defeat them in so many ways, crippling them to the point of near extinction. You also taught our new president how to authorize a surge like the one now taking place in Afghanistan. Leftist pettiness would never allow them to call it that, but that is exactly what it is patterned after, General Petraeus.
Thank you President Bush. I know it doesn’t mean much coming from some former Marine in Missouri but I appreciate what you did and I’ll never forget it.

Obama will come up with something. Maybe they’ll hire people to pedal bicycles to generate power. Just have a matrix of bicycles connected to the power grid.
No Mexican food for these people, though; can’t have methane emissions.
I’m not sure what they’ll do when they find people also emit CO2./////
If this wasn’t so deadly serious I would swear that it is the biggest prank of all time……… “Hey, let’s come up with the most fucked up, drug addled, crackpot, cockamamie ideas ever conjured up in the ‘60’s and make them the law of the land. Yeah, good idea maaaan……farm out”

I think there’s some nuance here. The article Charles links to cites this as the source…..
In a question-and-answer section written to help applicants understand the process, the document continues: “Will DOE use the number of jobs estimated to be created and/or retained as a criterion for rating a proposal for funding?”“No. Although job creation is not included in the technical criteria used to rate proposals, it plays an important role throughout the grant process, and grant recipients are required to submit the numbers of jobs created and retained in their quarterly reports to DOE and to recovery.gov.”
So the estimated jobs isn’t used to rate the original proposal but for grants and continued evalution it seems like it’s still a consideration.

In Texas, the problem lies in getting power from the proposed site in the Panhandle to a distribution system, Pickens said in an interview with The Associated Press in New York. He’d hoped to build his own transmission lines but he said there were technical problems.

If you follow the links you can read the criteria here: Smart Grid Investment Grants
It seems that they are judging proposals on broader impact rather than number of jobs created. Suppose someone proposes something really cool, cheap and effective but it only creates 20 jobs. A larger more wasteful project would create 1,000 jobs. Which project should get priority?
We can debate the merits of this but it’s not an indication that Obama doesn’t want to create jobs.

A few weeks ago, I saw a very scary indicator of the future of our
economy. I was driving down the 10 freeway in Colton, west of San Bernardino in SoCal. There is a huge rail marshalling yard there that assembles the trains that carry goods through the Cajon pass and on to the east coast. This is one of the busiest rail corridors in the world, handling goods on their way from asia to europe as well as domestic shipments. There were over 125 locomotives parked end to end on a siding. Normally there are only a few there waiting
for a string of cars to be stacked, the rest are pulling trains around the country. Like airliners on the ground, they are not making any money sitting there idle. This isn’t unexpected in an economic downturn, but there were so many!

Fact is that all of Obama’s economics figures are rife with voodoo math. Now, he’s shifting the goalposts to obfuscate that fact. Instead of saying that it’s not creating the jobs expected (which would be true), he’s saying that it was never about jobs created. It’s nonsense.

Maybe we need a new Cold War to fight global warming.
Using that as a thought: The left’s most effective tactic is ridicule. Why can’t someone bring up all the end of the world gloom being preached back in the ‘70’s over Global Cooling and the coming Ice Age. What about the Population Bomb?
IMO it would be an incredibly effective tactic to run those chicken little rants and use them to expose and highlight the lemming like rush off the cliff going on today.
It can’t be that hard. Dredge up the Time magazine articles, the books, the headlines……..and beat the fuckers over the head with them.

Hey sub - LOVED that story. I had thought that the “home improvement” industry would actually pick up with so many folks NOT buying new homes and am both surprised and disappointed that down your way, at least, this isn’t true.
BTW, if you haven’t done so already and have enough cash to do so: install therma pane (double pane) windows and storm door(s) and add some insulation - cause from a summary I read - probably linked to out here somewhere - the new Cap and Trade act -should it pass as written, requires that a homeowner pass an energy efficiency test administered by some contractor licensed by the EPA, BEFORE you can put your house on the Market to sell it. And, if it becomes law (and if the summary is correct) you can bet that lenders wouldn’t lend money to anyone who tried to buy the house even if it wasn’t marketed, unless it met those energy requirements!

And, like you, wonder what those “technical problems were or are and if it’s not code for “I couldn’t scare up enough money for the project” why we couldn’t figure out a technical solution?
It’s a couple of things. The problems included: 1) not getting the transmission lines authorized to run to where his wind farms were to be located; 2) financing fell through with the credit crunch; 3) natural gas prices dropped so that it makes the cost for wind power that much more expensive and less desirable than other power sources that are more stable.

It was never about jobs. Obama thought just by doing what his budddies were saying would really create jobs and make everything work and the world would love us again, like right after WWII. Deep down Obama believes the entire left/socialist/wealth redistribution meme. Is is part of his soul and the way he was raised. Breaking: Senate postpones cap-and-trade
The Washington Post reports that the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee will hold off on consideration of the House cap-and-trade bill until September at the earliest:
President Barack Obama’s push for quick action by Congress on climate change legislation suffered a setback on Thursday when the U.S. Senate committee leading the drive delayed work on the bill until September.
Senate Environment and Public Works Committee Chairman Barbara Boxer said her self-imposed deadline of early August for finishing writing a bill to combat global warming has been put off until after Congress returns from a recess that ends in early September.
“We’ll do it as soon as we get back” from that break, Boxer told reporters. Asked if this delay jeopardizes chances the Senate will pass a bill this year, Boxer said, “Not a bit … we’ll be in (session) until Christmas, so I’m not worried about it.”
But Boxer did not guarantee Congress will be able to finish a bill and deliver it to Obama by December, when he plans to attend an international summit on climate change in Copenhagen.

“”Before Bush invaded, there was no al Qaeda in Iraq.” -BHO
In fact, there were at least two Al Qaeda cells in Iraq prior to the invasion. In addition, at an enclave in eastern Kurdistan the Ansar al-Islam terrorist group was active and strong. Ansar al-Islam would later join with Al Qaeda in Iraq. And there was more…
During the initial invasion of Iraq, the toughest fighting was with small units of Saddam Feddayen and foreign fighters. Following the firefights, US troops captured some 400 dead or wounded foreign fighters. They were all carrying the same official Iraqi border entry documents from one crossing on the Syrian border. On the form where it aksed, “Reason for entering Iraq, the one word answer was written in: “Jihad”. Estimates from military intelligence was that there were some 4000 of these foreign fighters in Iraq at the time of the invasion. This is documented in Cobra II: The Inside Story of the Invasion and Occupation of Iraq
Now, the list is of organizations that can supply motivated Sunni Jihadis is a short one. The top of the list has got to be Al Qaeda.
So the fact is, Al Qaeda was indeed in Iraq, working with Saddam, before and during the initial invasion.

Nope. We’ve had czars in the past. In Republican administrations.
And in prior Democratic ones as well. FDR and his administration may not have started with the phrasing, but they did popularize it immensely.

Even one year ago, no one would tolerate/accept the title of czar for any American held office. “King” is still anathama. But czar? Savior? How did we get here?
Now I remember. The November election.
“Czar” has been used in American politics for these special offices for a while now; it’s not an invention of the Obama Administration. Think “drug czar”.

Nancy Pelosi says “Beat It” to House resolution on Michael Jackson
WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi shut the door Thursday to a resolution honoring Michael Jackson because debate on the symbolic measure could raise “contrary views” about the pop star’s life.
Lawmakers are free to use House speeches “to express their sympathy or their praise any time that they wish,” said Pelosi, D-Calif. “I don’t think it’s necessary for us to have a resolution.”
A resolution sponsored by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, cites some of the singer’s charitable acts and proclaims him an American legend, musical icon and world humanitarian.
Even before Pelosi’s comments, some Democrats said privately they did not support the resolution and a divisive debate would hurt House efforts to muster the votes for priorities such as health care and climate change.

It was never about jobs. As Rahm said they merely wanted to use the short-term crisis to cram through massive social program spending and lib/dem payback. They cynically reasoned that the typical business cycle pattern would likely cause the economy to turn back around on it’s own and they could take the credit. If it didn’t turn around well then, now we see what plan B is. O’s gonna talk his way out.
I didn’t know what to expect from this guy and thought once in office he might govern more fairly and rationally. Instead I see a very cynical leftist who apparently really does want to see the demise of capitalism and free markets to be replaced with massive government control and redistribution of wealth and oppurtunity. Abroad he appears to have some admiration (certainly a high level of respect which he openly displays) for totalitarian governing.
Karl Rove pointed out this morning in the WSJ that O can’t be trusted with numbers and obviously at this point cannot be held at his word in any way. Rove: Obama Can’t Be Trusted With Numbers

Makework jobs are stupid. If we’re going to have an energy department project to make America more energy-efficient, then the focus should be on making America more energy efficient. Nothing else. No secondary objectives.
The economy benefits in the long run from greater efficiency. If a business cannot make a go of it because their utility bills are eating their profits, it goes under and so do the jobs it provided. When regular folks pay too much of their income to heating and a/c, they have less left for other stuff. The jobs their remaining consumption would have supported disappear.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way — in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.

The Obama administration aspires to restructure large parts of the United States economy. Because its efforts have been broken into separate initiatives with different justifications, few people other than news junkies have noticed how extraordinary Barack Obama’s agenda is. Perhaps a number will help: 39%. That is the aggregate percentage of United States GDP produced by the three industries that the Democrats hope to restructure from the top down: Health care (17% of GDP), energy (9.8% of GDP), automotive industry (4% of GDP) and financial services (8% of GDP). Think about that… the Obama administration wants to redesign 39% of gross domestic product from the center. And he proposes to do it all in a rush this summer.
What could possibly go wrong? I mean, it’s not like Obama lacks any previous managerial experience what-so-ever.

White House Press Corps Spent the Fourth of July Hanging Out With Obama, Off the Record
Reporters from more than 30 television networks, newspapers, magazines, and web sites celebrated the Fourth of July with Barack Obama at the White House last weekend. Why didn’t you know that? Because they were sworn to secrecy.
We reported yesterday that Politico’s Mike Allen was spotted milling about as a guest at the White House’s “backyard bash” by the pool reporter, who was allowed into the even for 40 minutes and kept in a pen before being ushered out. When Allen quoted from the pool report in his Playbook column the next day, he deleted a reference to his own name and didn’t bother to tell his readers that he was actually at the party.
Well, he wasn’t alone. Gawker has learned that the White House gave tickets to virtually every major news organization that covers the president—the New York Times , Washington Post , Newsweek , Time , ABC News, NBC News, CNN, CBS News, and so on, more than 30 in all. The reporters were invited to attend on the following condition:
“You are being invited to attend this event as a guest. Blogging, Twittering or otherwise reporting on this event is not permitted. If you feel that you cannot agree to abide by these ground rules, please don’t claim a ticket.”

Excellent news! Even if y’all don’t want to sell your house, you’ll be spending less on energy!
nb- I’m a fan of being environmentally friendly, as long as it doesn’t cost an arm and a leg to accomplish.
That’s why I’m so much in favor of Nuclear Power - it’s clean, reliable and - for project costs (not including the cost of the inevitable lawsuits to block the construction/operations of ‘em) vs. value added, Nuke Plants ARE the “alternative energy” we’ve been looking for!
Only the US doesn’t see the benefits of nuclear energy, the rest of the world does. Especially Socialist Europe.

Gov’t can’t “create” jobs. Defies laws of economics.
Socialist believe there is a finte economy. If my income goes from $50,000 to $100,000. That means someone or a group of people are no makeing $50,000 less. Of course they ignore the fact that I created $50,000 a new economic acitivity.
But, you can apply socialist dogma to gov’t. If the gov’t spends, say $1,000,000,000. that comes from taking away $1,000,000,000 from someone else, since the gov’t cannot create new ecnomic activity (outside of providing basic support for highways, national defense, reasonable food inspections, etc).

New theory about Michael Jackson
As a source of humor, Al Sharpton is always reliable. A caller into his radio show speculates that Sarah Palin had Michael Jackson whacked, and the scandal was about to break, so that is why she resigned. The good reverend does nothing to question that speculation and says he will “put it out there.”

Actually, I’d be more concerned about driving around in a GM or Chrysler product, since the bankruptcies of those companies will leave plaintiffs in products liability suits against them with nothing but worthless debt notes. The new entities created by the government will escape liability on defects from the old versions of GM and Chrysler, and Chrysler appears to have gotten an even better deal than that.

(CNSNews.com) – Rep. John Fleming (R-La.) introduced a bill Monday that urges members of Congress who vote to create a government-run health insurance agency to give up their own comprehensive health insurance plans to join the new the public option they advocate for others.
The bill, H. Res. 615, says members of Congress who vote for a government-run health care bureau should become the inaugural customers of government-run health-care.
“That it is the sense of the House of Representatives that Members who vote in favor of the establishment of a public, federal government run health insurance option are urged to forgo their right to participate in the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program (FEHBP) and agree to enroll under that public option,” the resolution reads.

The real crime about Cap and Trade is that it will merely be a tax. In order to pass it they had to waive so many democrats from their constituents having to comply that it wouldn’t reduce C02 emmissions in any case. It’s more pure punishment for those who didn’t want it for essentially no real reason other than political posturing.
Besides countries that signed onto the Kyoto treaty years ago when Bush declined never met their committments anyway. It’s weird how those who claim to be most urgent and convinced of anthropogenic global warming’s actions do not match their words. re: #410 NJDhockeyfan
The “federal program” Fleming referred to is the Federal Employee Health Benefits Program, which is available to all federal government employees, including members of Congress and their staffs.
It is essentially a health insurance pool that offers hundreds of different private insurance plans that conform to limited rules. Because all federal agencies and both houses of Congress participate in the pool, the benefits are quite good, better than those offered under many private plans because health care costs do not affect the government’s bottom line.
It would be good if he added an amendment to shut this special program down completely if the larger plan is passed.

OT - (although is appears we are OT anyway).
I just went to the store, and driving back in, I noticed that we have workers on the top of my apartment buildings, doing roof repair.
It’s a three story building and they have set up a perimeter of plastic flags on a string, around the edge of the roof.
Ok, these guys are roofers, right? And these guys work on roofs, right? And if you worked on roofs, what would be the first thing that you would notice, that you would pay attention to?
WHERE THE EDGE OF THE FUCKING ROOF IS!
I’ve never seen this before, and I suspect because it’s not something that a roofing company had to worry about in the past.
But now, I suspect it’s part of some 1500 page rule book composed by the unions and the insurance companies.
What happened to the old-fashioned axiom “don’t fall off the roof?” My grandfather told that to me all the time.

Winston reports on 18 Tir Protests
I talked to a few friends inside of Iran tonight. Every one seemed ready/edgy for something to happen today in Tehran and other major cities. The protests may take place around 4 pm (7:30pm ET) in major intersections and squares of Tehran. It may not be as big as what we saw in the past 2-3 weeks but any protest against this regime is better than nothing at all. It keeps Iran in the news headlines and that’s what Mullahs hate. The external coverage of the ongoing unrest against the regime is essential to boost the confidence of those brave people who go out on the streets and confront the thugs.

Good to see you! How’s business? People still eating at your place?
Mostly up, but so are cost. New minimum wage kicks in on the 25th. Lunch business has completely changed. We use to be busy from 11-2 with lunch, now it’s a pop from 12-1. Family business at night has picked up to offset the lunches.

In my brazen, callow and reckless youth, I did hot-tar industrial [BUR] roofing. We never needed any flags or cones as we could see that the edge of the roof was like a horizon — the edge presented itself as a clearly delineated outline.

I find it interesting that the airlines, despite reducing their service to steerage conditions, are constantly teetering on the edge of bankruptcy.
Intercity bus service has practically vanished.
Amtrak does not pay for itself.
Yet people still need, constantly, to travel with relative rapidity from city to city, and find driving too expensive and inconvenient.
How the hell do all of the forms of cross-country transport manage to consistently keep themselves in the red?
Look to Southwest Airlines….they keep labor costs lower than their competitors. They also do other interesting things. They offer low rates and good service. They only fly one type of aircraft, - Boeing 737. Their mechanics need to only learn one jet. They cross train their workers, instill a positive attitude. They avoid cities and airports that charge huge gate fees. They target regional travel rather than global travel. They do not over leverage themselves and “hope for the best” like most of the other carriers these days.
I am in the air freight business and Southwest is the best airline to deal with for domestic freight, hands down.

Oh no. I know how those in power treated you. How you hated their use of power.
Sadly though, some of us are ahead of you regarding desperate measures. I won’t go into my recent journey to ensure a place to live if there is no more “income.”
I will say that I got a letter from a friend I hadn’t heard from in five years. She didn’t know I was jobless. When she did learn it, she said “Oh no.” Haven’t heard from her since. Many sense a cloud of financial collapse is coming and are trying to cling to anything that still floats.

From the information I’ve heard about at my work, the unemployment by the end of the year could improve substantially. It could get below 8%.
The problem with attacking Obama too severely now is that if the job picture improves, it will be quite a political coup for him - perhaps enough to help him get more onerous legislation through. The problem isn’t the short term job picture - there’s no way you can borrow and dump billions of dollars on the economy and not create jobs. The problem is long term stagnation and inflation from all the borrowing and central planning.

I think that is just plain wrong. Are you serious? McCain would have pushed this Cap and Trade crap, now? He would have done what Obama has done? that is simply not true. Last I check McCain disliked pork spending and that is ALL Obama has done since taking over. I’d be willing to bet that if the government had stopped at TARP the banks would be in the same shape they are now, and private investors would not be as skiddish as they are now. Given the treatment of bond holders by GM and Chrysler would you be rushing out to dump money in a business that the government could deem too big to fail and pretty much take over giving your money to the unions and giving you cents on the dollar? The recovery is awaiting cap and trade and health care reform, once those get ramrodded through 9.5% unemploynebt levels will look pretty good.

Cross country rail would work if congress would quit meddling with AMTRAK. They could actually make money if they were allowed to abandon old non profitable lines and add new ones without having to use prevailing wage workers.
584 | LGoPs Thu, Jul 9, 2009 11:47:32am |
re: #570 buzzsawmonkey
Fine. So the airlines can’t afford to provide what they’re providing, at the price they charge.
The trains can’t afford to; the buslines can’t afford to.
So nobody can afford to move people from one city to another at an affordable price?
Nobody?
I understand that the background costs of flight are expensive—though you’d think that in 90 years of commercial aviation the airlines would have figured out how to do it.
But the fact that not a single form of inter-city transport can figure out how to do it at a profit, when all three of the forms I mentioned formerly managed to flourish when there were fewer people traveling routinely and people made less money is something I find baffling.
My guess is unions and the crippling costs they impose……..similar to the way they’ve brought the automakers to their knees.
Not sure if Southwest is unionized.

Amtrak’s major problem is that it owns no track, so its trains take a back seat to the freight trains on any given line, and Amtrak also cannot upgrade track to run faster trains.
This has resulted in the run from Chicago to New York being, currently, far slower than the same run was in 1945.

Note that socialism can be defined as either “collective” or “governmental” ownership and administration. It seems to me that the financial, insurance, and automobile industries have been subject to this - a “collective” ownership (e.g., taxpayers) implemented by a “governmental” entity (the administration with help from Congress).
The energy legislation actually puts home ownership in the hands of government, if we are required to get “permission” from a government inspector prior to selling.
The health care (actually “coverage”) legislation puts government in even greater control of both primary and ancillary health care organizations and companies.

Most US Carriers are bloated dinosaurs a la GM. They have piles of debt and obligations, an unhappy worker force, they are spread thin trying to be “global” and have no vision for the future. Virtually every other international carrier is heavily subsidized and even worse. If air carriers want to survive lean times, they better start emulating the formula Southwest has, or they are going to disappear…..PanAm? Eastern? Northwest is being eaten up by Delta (another sick puppy). The future does not bode well for the airline industry. OSHA regs. because, you know, flags on a string will STOP any roofers who start sliding down the roof:)
Not to second guess what you saw, but a friend who owns a roofing company has walked right off the edge of roofs more than once. You spend a lot of time backing up, and shingles are typically laid so they slop over the edge, then the slop gets trimmed off last so there’s a nice straight edge created. But, step on that slop and you’ve got nothing but a shingle supporting you.
I’ve never seen what you describe, but it wouldn’t surprise me that it’s a method meant to prevent such incidents.

Protesters, officers clash violently in Iran’s streets
Violent clashes erupted today in downtown Tehran between more than a thousand determined young men and women chanting, “Death to the dictator” and “God is great” and security forces wielding truncheons.
The screams of a woman being beaten could be heard from nearby buildings, a witness said. Business owners could be seen hustling protesters into their buildings to shield them from plainclothes officers and anti-riot police who fired tear gas canisters.

Could it be that the unions have taken any real profit and put into their pensions and salaries?

Not to second guess what you saw, but a friend who owns a roofing company has walked right off the edge of roofs more than once. You spend a lot of time backing up, and shingles are typically laid so they slop over the edge, then the slop gets trimmed off last so there’s a nice straight edge created. But, step on that slop and you’ve got nothing but a shingle supporting you.
I’ve never seen what you describe, but it wouldn’t surprise me that it’s a method meant to prevent such incidents.
It was a flat roof.

They are killing off their only profitable divisions rapidly as well - freight and cargo.
I generally always fly Southwest.

OFF TOPIC - NEED YOUR HELP
There is a 16 year old girl in the hospital in Florida with a Congenital Heart Defect. Eventually she will need a transplant but that won’t happen for a while. She was admitted in mid-June with an infection and has been there ever since.
She was intubated two weeks ago (roughly) and today at 4:00 PM Eastern (2000 GMT) they are going to remove the Intubation Tube and perform a Tracheostomy. Her health is still pretty fragile, and as you can guess, she’s scared. So are her parents. So if you have a few moments around 4 PM, think good thoughts for “Florida Eliza.” (I have a friend from Colorado with the same name; that’s what I say to make sure we’re talking about the right person!)
News seems to travel slow sometimes, but as soon as I hear how things are going, I *WILL* let you know… later today, tomorrow, or even later than that, if needed.

re: #552 Desert Dog
Look to Southwest Airlines….they keep labor costs lower than their competitors. They also do other interesting things. They offer low rates and good service. They only fly one type of aircraft, - Boeing 737. Their mechanics need to only learn one jet. They cross train their workers, instill a positive attitude. They avoid cities and airports that charge huge gate fees. They target regional travel rather than global travel. They do not over leverage themselves and “hope for the best” like most of the other carriers these days.
I am in the air freight business and Southwest is the best airline to deal with for domestic freight, hands down.
If a bag needs to be picked up, a SW pilot will do it. Our friend, a retired major airline pilot, said any pilots he knew would never do that. It’s a whole different mindset.

The Ant and the Grasshopper.
In a field one summer’s day a Grasshopper was hopping about, chirping and singing to its heart’s content. An Ant walked by, grunting as he carried a plump kernel of corn.
“Where are you off to with that heavy thing?” asked the Grasshopper.
Without stopping, the Ant replied, “To our ant hill. This is the third kernel I’ve delivered today.”
“Why not come and sing with me,” said the Grasshopper, “instead of working so hard?”
“I am helping to store food for the winter,” said the Ant, “and think you should do the same.”
“Why bother about winter?” said the Grasshopper; “we have plenty of food right now.”
But the Ant went on its way and continued its work.
The weather soon turned cold. All the food lying in the field was covered with a thick white blanket of snow that even the grasshopper could not dig through. Soon the Grasshopper found itself dying of hunger.
He staggered to the ants’ hill and saw them handing out corn from the stores they had collected in the summer.
Then the Grasshopper knew: He immediately joined Acorn, lobbied Congress, and was instrumental in the passage of legislation to take all the Ant’s stuff, distribute it to him and his pals, and toss the Ant out of his little house.
Next winter, the Grasshopper froze to death.
The end.

I think that is just plain wrong. Are you serious? McCain would have pushed this Cap and Trade crap, now? He would have done what Obama has done? that is simply not true. Last I check McCain disliked pork spending and that is ALL Obama has done since taking over. McCain is hardly a conservative, but he probably knows you have to make business run better to get more jobs. That fact seems lost to Obama and his crew of merry men.
Obama is heading for a fall…..the cliff is near and he is picking up speed.
I wouldn’t go that far, at least not yet. He’s got a solid three years before his next election cycle is in full swing, and a solid year before the midterms. Even if the current dismal economic performance continues stagnating all the way through January, that puts a full six months of recovery on the books prior to the first round of stumping, and two and a half years until 0 faces reelection. Both are eternities in politics. And chances favor the beginnings of a recovery by the end of the year, if not sooner, despite the Administration’s incompetence and even encouragement of a prolonged slowdown that aids them in passing the other items on their agenda - notably nationalized health care - by inducing a climate of fear.

Actually, I seldom fly these days I seldom fly Southwest these days, but I’ve reaped the benefits of their presence in smaller, reigonal airports like Providence, Manchester NH, Hartford or Albany, NY. Their very presence in those cities tends to keep other carriers’ costs down in order to be competitive.

Yes no parking. Goes through the worst parts of town. Doesn’t stop at the airport yet. Bypasses major business hubs. There should have been a Boeing Stop, An Amazon stop, Associated Grocers stop.
Seattle is business unfriendly. If you go to the city hall you will notice they hid the coffee shop out of site and put art upfront. The vendor needs a mirror to spotlight himself. It looks like he is not allowed to advertise much.
Same with the Port of Seattle at the airport. The mom and pop coffee shop there was jilted by the port after years of service and customer loyaly. Nothing could deter the government officials to stop their anti business practices.
For being such a sensitive city, one still finds people trying to solve the homeless problem by subsidizing lofts for starving artists. Single moms? Seattle has never heard of them.

An interesting tactic, that. Accuse someone of testifying in closed session about something that contradicts their public statements, and don’t release even a shred of evidence - like, you know, the recorded minutes of the session - to back up your claims. Then demand that they “come clean.”

It isn’t as simple as you might think. You’re often rushing to get the job done, and after eight or ten hours on physical labor on a hot roof even the best of workers is suffering from fatigue. You’ve got, say, the roofing membrane hanging a foot or so over the actual supported edge of the roof; it looks just like the roof, you put your foot down on it, and by the time you realize there’s nothing but 30 feet of air underneath it you’re 10 feet from the ground and accelerating rapidly.
It may sound silly, but it happens. Like I said, I’ve never seen the edges flagged, but it doesn’t sound like a bad idea to me.
Since it’s your building, maybe you could ask them why it’s done. Then you’d have a definitive answer instead of a speculative one.

“Creating jobs?” That’s economic creationism.
The Anti-Science (Republican) Party is unable to understand how life can spontaneously arise through the interaction of molecules, and the Anti-Prosperity (Democrat) Party is unable to understand how an economy can spontaneously organize itself through the interaction of millions of human beings.
With the Anti-Science Party running the State, one can still learn, teach, apply, and create science. With the Anti-Prosperity Party running the State, entrepreneurs get treated like dog dirt and stop creating jobs, leaving the rest of us in poverty and despair.
That is why it is imperative that the Anti-Science Party prevail.

The only jobs government can create are one involving more government and bureaucrats. Private sector jobs are created when there is LESS government intervention and interference.
I’d say for every government job that is created, five private sector jobs are lost. It takes the money provided by the private sector to support the tax base needed for the public sector. I’m not going to vilify all government jobs - but making more government bureaucracy in this horrible economic climate is about as dumb as it gets.
