The onion is, as always, brilliant and cutting.
Reminder (and repost)-- OK has had in the past a law requiring ultrasounds for women seeking abortions, even when it's completely unnecessary medically:
But what if a woman doesn't want an ultrasound, and there's no pressing clinical reason for her to have it? Four states—Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Oklahoma—have taken the galling step of requiring her to have one regardless of need. They recently passed laws that go beyond offering ultrasounds to mandating them. Oklahoma's new statute dictates that either the doctor performing the abortion or a "certified technician working in conjunction" with that doctor do the ultrasound, "provide a simultaneous explanation of what the ultrasound is depicting," and also "display the ultrasound images so that the pregnant woman may view them." The law goes so far as to specify the doctor's script: The physician must describe the heartbeat and the presence of internal organs, fingers, and toes. The patient then has to certify in writing that the doctor or technician duly did all of this before the abortion. She can avert her eyes from the screen, the statute allows. Maybe the legislators should have also thought to mention putting her hands over her ears.
I particularly like when the guy on the fake Onion panel points out that during the mandatory 3-week contemplation period following the nursery-painting, the woman could just close the door, so we need to make sure she spends time sitting in that room.

I feel for the people who honestly, through spiritual belief, feel that abortion is a terrible thing. I know that they exist, and I feel terrible for them.
However, I also know that there are a large number of people who view abortion as something to deny to women in order to punish them for having sex. It's an area where decency should rule, and those who attempt to humiliate, scare, and shame women at doctor's offices are to me, doing no good, but doing great harm.

going OT and geekoid.....got to attend a lecture last night by Bill Cochran who is a professor of astronomy at UT in Austin and is also a principle investigator on the Kepler space telescope mission. This instrument and its charter are fabulous. The telescope can monitor 150,000 stars continuously and it orbits in the Earth's shadow. Its sole goal is to look for earth-like planets around other stars. It stares as a fixed region of space. To be able to detect an earth size planet it has the capability to see 84 ppm changes in luminosity as the planet transits its sun. Since to detect a transit the planet and us have to be in the same plane, there is only a 0.4% probability of the proper alignment. Thus looking at 150,000 stars is needed. The are also looking for periods of about 300 to 400 days. When they detect one, they then need a second detection (300 days later) and then they have to predict a third and have it happen. The sole goal of this mission is to determine if earth like planets are rare or common. Since the mission started in March, mark your calendar for some time in 2012 for a wealth of info to come out.

Ok, but I didn't say any of what you seem to think I said. I said it isn't fair to dismiss people who feel that children/fetuses/human life should be protected and that death occurs when an abortion is performed don't have to get an abortion. That silly dismissal misses the point. They want to protect human life. If you feel the fetus is a human life needing protecting, it does not make sense to say "only mine" obviously, they want to save all babies. PS I am prochoice. I never said pro choice was anti life. You are trying to pull the old "if you not with me, or agin me" crap. And your last 2 sentences make no sense in context. If I knew what exactly you were trying to say and I would happily reply.

I'm sort of on the fence about this pre-abortion sonogram stuff.
On one hand, forcing a woman to view a sonogram is obviously an attempt to manipulate the woman through guilt...it pisses me off that govt tries to do this kind of thing.
On the other hand, we have legally mandated "full disclosure" laws about almost everything, medical and otherwise. Anyone providing a service is legally bound to divulge important information. Is making sure a woman truly understands what is about to terminated such a stretch?
BTW, this Onion clip isn't funny. A rare strike-out.

That makes you pro-choice.
Pro-choice people don't want to outlaw abortion, but neither do they want to take that legal choice away from others.
And prochoice people also want to reduce the necessity for abortion, by increasing education, availability and accessibility to birth control, and the availability of emergency contraception.
Those are all areas where the rhetoric of pro-choice/pro-life breaks down, because all pro-life people, (if they aren't theocrats interested in controlling women's sexuality) agree on those issues too-- and we all also share the desire to make adoption an easier choice as well.
This is a major area where I feel our labels (and political rhetoric) get in the way. People who care about women and children can all agree on all of the above, and we should all be working together on those issues-- and marginalising the truly anti-choice people who hate women, like the murderous scumbags in the Army of God, or Scott Roeder, etc.

Yes, we exist.
But there's no reason to feel badly for us. Really. We're OK.
Those who are like me - that is, we're not about to go kill anybody - what you'll see is that we support and promote agencies that provide adoption services, financial and medical assistance and aid, etc. And we're most happy to do those things. So - no need to feel badly for us. We're not complete oddities who need others feeling badly for us because of our beliefs.

Thank you for the context. Thats a much more nuanced position.
I'm not some anti abortion/right wing stooge regardless of what people think...I promote education, abstinence, personal responsibility, and self respect...I do not think it is appropriate to have 13 year old mothers or victims of rape bearing their felons spawn....otherwise we need to try and reduce the number of abortions if we can...it is not birth control

I can't believe I"m defending an anti-abortion point, but thats just not true. You can have 'legal in some circumstances'. Whether you should do it, its certainly POSSIBLE.
Absolutely not. Think about how that would be enforced. A governmental legal process to to be granted the procedure. Think about all the women who would too embarrassed/humiliated/frightened to do it.

re: #82 Escaped Hillbilly
I wasn't dissing them. If they don't agree with abortions, then they shouldn't have one. They don't have a right to tell anyone else what to do with their unborn children. Especially when many of them don't want to take care of welfare mothers either.
Women will continue to have abortions whether they're legal or not. In countries where abortion is legal, it just so happens that there are fewer cases.
Here's a study conducted fairly recently (2007). It's a whole bunch to read, but near the end is this.
In developed countries where contraception is accepted socially and family planning services are generally available, the abortion rate ranges from about seven to 20 per 1,000 women. In some subpopulations, the rate has been as low as 3–4 per 1,000, as among the Dutch-born population of the Netherlands in the recent past.56 Evidence suggests, however, that unwanted pregnancies and induced abortions occur to some degree in every society, for a number of reasons—contraceptive methods fail on occasion, couples do not always use their methods correctly or consistently, some women have partners who oppose contraceptive use, some become pregnant as a result of coerced sex and some seek abortion for health reasons or because of changes in their circumstances.

I used to wonder what would posess a woman to wait that long to decide something like that.....
When I was pregnant with HRS, we had all the usual blood testing done (right around 12 weeks I think) and we came up positive (increased risk) for Trisomy 18. It was 10 days between those test results and the confirmation test (amniocentesis) and another week to get the amnio results back. Better half and I did a lot of talking about decisions..... and I am very, very grateful that I didn't have to make one (false positive). There is no way I can condemn someone for either choice faced with a situation like that....

Full disclosure doesn't mean, first we go looking for some info. It means we tell you what we know. The woman already knows what she is pregnant with. And an ultrasound is a medical procedure. Does full disclosure require the cardiologist to first run a cardiogram before telling you to reduce your salt intake? Nope. This is one that should go to the Supreme Court. I think OK might be told to knock it off.

Ah, gotcha.
It's a difficult subject.
On the one hand, I would personally prefer that those who choose abortion be able to have legal medical care, rather than have to suffer and die from back-alley abortions.
On the other hand, I would personally prefer that no one chose that option.
The best I can do - support and promote those organizations that provide the services I listed earlier.

re: #73 Big Steve
going OT and geekoid...got to attend a lecture last night by Bill Cochran who is a professor of astronomy at UT in Austin and is also a principle investigator on the Kepler space telescope mission.
OT and Readoid. At least put in some paragraphs.

I do understand you, but I don't think you're getting my point. It's not their place. And that's an interesting study. The last one was done in 1995 which had the legal/illegal abortion comparison which was about 50/50 (a little higher in countries with legal abortion). Actually the effective use of contraception has led to less abortions as a whole from how I read it. As well as family planning clinics.

She kept telling them, "I believe in choice. This is my choice, I'm having a baby." That seemed oddly hard for some people to understand.

A man's right to torture is a personal choice between him and his doctor that the government shouldn't interfere with. They don't really care about the maimed victim, they just want control over a man's body and to punish him for making war.
Will that do?
Right on, brother!

So, folks, since we're past the 100 comment mark, I feel justified in telling you about my test ride of the Jag XK8 today.
From a dead stop at the bottom of the steepest hill on Bainbridge Island, I was doing 70+ mph in under five seconds. Maybe less. My heart rate was definitely up, so I may have counted fast.
Given that the top speed here on the island is 40, I'm going to get up early tomorrow and head for Mount Rainier. Just hoping my bud didn't check the odometer before he tossed me the key.
When the Lincoln gets out of the shop, I may offer him a straight-up trade. My Connie with only 53k miles for his 131k Jag. He's a family man, he needs a bigger car.

This is not going to make my favorites. Then again, my all-time favorite Onion story was the one about the man who was released from the zoo after having been believed to be a giraffe for fifteen years.
Not that I have to explain it, of course! But you have to look at the Onion as the complete opposite of whatever point they're trying to make. Just as far out there as one could go, and this was pretty far. If you watch it to the end, they want to harvest her kidneys, too and drain her of all her blood.

My deepest personal opinions on the subject have changed several times over the years ( a lot of that having to with having children I'm sure), but while I don't necessarily agree with any one else's choice, it's also one I don't feel comfortable making for anyone else either...not sure where that puts me in the argument

re: #157 marjoriemoon
I said I am letting you go. You think contraception (which means preventing pregnancy) reduced abortions? DUH! I already agree on that point...as on most others made here. I just think YOU do not comprehend that the people who object to abortion do not object because they don't like the medical procedure...they object because they believe a child's life is at stake. Maybe theirs, maybe yours, maybe some teenaged girl. If they think it is a life they are saving...of course they care! I am not saying they have a right to tell anyone else they can't. I am saying that logically following that train of thought impells them morally to be as concerned about your abortion as their own. So it is not about just not having one themselves. Some people, I believe in fact someone upthread, have such beliefs and do not try to run other people's lives or prevent them from making their own choice. There is always room for middle ground. This subject is so emotionally charged that we can no longer here concerns from both sides without becoming dogmatic, flippant, dismissive, or hostile. I do not think it is an either or proposition at all. "Pro Life" and "Pro Choice" are not mutually exclusive, nor are they the only stances one can take.

Doesn't matter. You'll still have to wait your turn.

Which was the level of advertising in the sixties. And it's still the level of political debate in most cases in this world.

I hear it is excellent, but it might be a little ewww for me. Kind of a wuss when it comes to the violent shooting/blood-guts stuff.
There are some violent scenes, but it's not too graphic and it's more of an epic story than an action show. I think it's the only cop show where there are no scenes of a cop chasing a criminal on foot or drawing a gun.

Interesting.
Why I’m Joining the Fight for Marriage Equality
If you are uncomfortable with gay marriage, I encourage you to pay attention to the landmark civil rights trial which began this week in California.
This week a landmark civil rights court case began in California. The federal trial Perry v. Schwarzenegger challenges the constitutionality of California’s Proposition 8 ban on gay marriage. Two couples argue that they have a constitutional right to marry, and that California’s law denies them due process and equal protection under the 14th Amendment, relegating them second-class citizens.
You may think, “San Francisco liberals at it again! Hijacking the courts, inventing new constitutional rights!” Stop there. The lead counsel in the case is George W. Bush’s Solicitor General, who successfully argued Bush v. Gore before the Supreme Court in one of his fifty-five performances before the nation’s highest judicial body. He is Theodore “Ted” Olsen, a founder of the Federalist Society, constitutional law expert, and one of the most respected conservatives in America.
Mr. Olsen thinks constitutionally guaranteed rights ought to transcend left vs. right, Democrat vs. Republican divides (he even recruited legal opponent David Boies as co-counsel). I agree with him. And as a proud Republican representing a younger generation of conservatives that cherish individual freedom, I am honored to join the American Equal Right’s Foundation’s Advisory Board.
I encourage everyone, but especially Republicans, to consider Mr. Olsen’s arguments on the merits, both in his opening statement and throughout the trial’s ensuing three weeks. The plaintiff’s counsel seeks to convince Judge Vaughn R. Walker that the Supreme Court has already decided in Loving v. Virginia, Turner v. Safely, and in Lawrence v. Texas among others, that the right to marry is a fundamental right currently denied to an entire class of American citizens. This is unconstitutional.
We Republicans have often found ourselves on the wrong side of civil rights struggles since the 1960s, but there was a reason that Martin Luther King, Jr.'s father is said to have supported Republicans.

* In spite of this, she once was hedonistically playing a card game called "Rook" with some of her friends.
* She went to check on her son, and saw that his gums were bleeding a little, probably as a result of teething.
* She immediately launched into PANIC-GOD-FEARING-FREAK-OUT mode, and forever after forbade CARDS to be in her presence.

I used to run with a New Age crowd. There was a story in the local paper about this young girl born without legs. She always wanted to be a dancer. Long story short, she finally got prostheses and became a ballerina. It was very moving.
One of these people I knew said that she was born without legs because she must have done something terrible in a past life. Knowing how these people think (that everything is predestined), I suggested that maybe she picked this life to be born without legs so she can learn the lessons of courage and humility, and experience the bountiful love that she received. That shut her up right quick.

I think you made the right choice. A lot of times those special schools/classes are the same ones they put disciplinary cases in. NOT a safe place for a pregnant woman. Back when my oldest sister was a pregnant teen, the DA schools had a policy that she had to leave school and be home tutored. This resulted in her dropping out completely. She was a grandmother before she went back to school. Glad your daughter has a mom who knows how to fight.

Going out there in this mess was just too much, so I went to plan B and the unexpected result was the best damn steaks ever - inside! ( I did not think this possible)
Butter and oil heated to almost smoking...
Season the meat...
Listen to it sizzle when it hits the hot oil...
3-5 minutes per side (or until crisped and carmalizing)...
hit the pan with a spot of Dijon and a splash of white wine...
Pour over the steak, add the baked potato and a salad...
No kidding, the best steak in a long time. I have never done it on the stove before. Good, good, good

The detail of the pattern is movement,
As in the figure of the ten stairs.
Desire itself is movement
Not in itself desirable;
Love is itself unmoving,
Only the cause and end of movement,
Timeless, and undesiring
Except in the aspect of time
Caught in the form of limitation
Between un-being and being.
Sudden in a shaft of sunlight
Even while the dust moves
There rises the hidden laughter
Of children in the foliage
Quick now, here, now, always—
Ridiculous the waste sad time
Stretching before and after

When I was teaching at the horrible hippie charter school a few years back, one of the girls got pregnant. It was a very weird situation for me, because it seemed as though the school really didn't know how to handle it, or want to use common sense.
Her doctor insisted she stay home and get bed rest from about five months on, and that was that for the year. I pray she finished school and is happy. The baby would be about two now, I guess.

Right. Now I remember.
I play basketball. Or rather I used to before my orthopedic surgeon gave me The Talk. Anyways, I was playing in Fresno once and there was this red headed guy with a palsy that left him with little control over the left side of his body. And he was playing basketball. With us. He would move in and out of the key out to the three point line. I'd dump it out to him (because I figured this shit out quick) and he'd just nail three pointers. And then he'd tell you about it.
I was in a tough ashtanga yoga class once and this smelly fat fuck of a guy set up his mat right in front of me. What the hell is he doing here? He was a really good student. Maybe not with the ideal yoga body, but an awesome yoga student. An inspiration.
You never know.

I honestly don't know. She might also have just been dropping out of school, and coming up with a cover story. It was a very screwed up school situation, so I take everything they told me with a grain of salt. I had no common language with her family.
I was just hacked that no one told me. I looked at her one day and though 'Damn, she's pregnant'. Before I could ask around, or check in with her, one of the moms at the school grabbed me after class to ask if the pregnant girl her son was friends with needed any baby stuff, because she had everything from her youngest in the garage.
At the staff meeting, I pointed out, politely, that if I had known the child was expecting, I might have been, for one thing, a little more liberal with the bathroom passes. I asked if the office had her doctor's number. They looked confused.

His turn as Animal Mother from Full Metal Jacket is a classic. He's entertaining on Chuck and as a kid I liked him in My Bodyguard and The Chocolate War. Plus, the guy co-starred in a movie with Mr. T!

re: #368 Olsonist
Indeed.
When I was in Kindergarten, they decided to mainstream disabled children into public school which is something they hadn't done before (like 1967). There was a boy named Scott (I also remember his last name) with severe cerebral palsy. It doesn't effect the mind at all, but he walked with braces (like polio), he couldn't speak well, he drooled. Anyway, I sat next to him and always helped him with his pencils, paper, crayons. All the kids made fun of him, as kids do, and me because I was "his girlfriend."
Anyway, we picked names at Christmas for a gift exchange and I got Scott's name. There was a $10 limit but my mom wanted to get him something special so we got him a train set. We exchanged the gifts in front of the class and when he opened the box, he was so happy, he started crying. He hugged me so tightly and said thank you. All the teasing didn't matter after that.

Except for that, uh, people do want celebs' opinions. Viz. Bono writing op-eds for the NYT. At least he can right and has a brain, whatever you think of the use he puts it to. Ditto, on a smaller scale, the musings of any B-level actor in a given tabloid.

If the singular possessive is difficult or awkward to pronounce with an added sibilant, do not add an extra s; these exceptions are supported by The Guardian,[17] Emory University's writing center,[18] and The American Heritage Book of English Usage.[19] Such sources permit possessive singulars like these: Socrates' later suggestion; James's house, or James' house, depending on which pronunciation is intended.

Right, but McKenna is running a lot of ads when compared to the other GOP candidates. Wait until after the primary and it is either Quinn or Hynes. Once the machine gets involved, the ads for the Dem are going to be through the roof. You won't beat them with ads.
When you get right down to it we have to remember this is a solid blue state. A Republican can win, and has in the past, but I'm not sure McKenna is the guy to convince Democratic voters to vote GOP. The Dems will paint his as a party insider, a career politician. And it will work. Because he is.
I like Schillerstrom. He ran DuPage County really smoothly. The county is bigger than six states and was always fiscally responsible. Under his command, the government shrunk every single year without any noticable decrease in government services. Now that's a message you can sell.

Bull.
Socrates' and Jesus' are OK in writing because they're classical or biblical. That's pretty much the only valid exception. Otherwise, if you're going to dinner at the house of your friend Jens, you're going to Jens's house.
Anyone who writes "Charles'" for "Charles's" in the possessive is wrong. And as for pronunciation, if you actually say Charles instead of Charleses when trying to enunciate it as a possessive, you are excommunicated.
I go with Fowler, anyway, not this newfangled hip-hop English. And I mean the original Fowler. Screw Emory and the board he surfed in on.

My dad is pulling for Jim Ryan for family reasons. Whats your take on him?

You have no idea how accurate that phrasing is.
The Jag has a kickdown button. Under the accelerator pedal. When you floor it, it downshifts to the appropriate gear (there are five) to give max power.
Never played with one of those before. It is, well...a gas.

I mostly listen to songs about astral travel, demons, or introspective nightmares. :D But yeah, I get what you're saying, I think you put your finger on it, anything that smacks of that, it doesn't usually go on my iPod. I'm trying to think of an exception, and I'm coming up blank. Even my favorite Chrismas music is instrumental.
Try this one. From Britten's "A Ceremony of Carols". A minute and a half of high intensity. A triple round with a gorgeous resolution:
I also can't listen to the Faure or Verdi Requiems without getting chills. And don't even get me started about Mahler 2. Good choral music is magnificent, done well.

He's good. I haven't heard him speak much. He didn't go to the debate I attended. Two term attorney general, no real controversy or anything. The only problem he may run into is the last name. We have some pretty notorious "Ryans" in our state history. It sounds silly to say, but some may confuse him with Jack Ryan, or connect him with George Ryan. In fact, I read a Sun-Times article that said exactly that; some people thought he was the kinky guy that ran against Obama. But I think that he has a better chance in the general than McKenna, based on previous experience.
Funny side note, in 1990, he lost to Roland Burris in the AG election. Awkward!
I don't know what will happen with Gov, but this is the best climate for the GOP in a decade. We'll have to wait and see I guess.
Well, I have to be up in five hours to drive my uncle to the airport. He's going to Florida. Bastard.

Shut Up and Sing.
Goes for every corner of the political spectrum.
Act. Sing. Do your sports thing.

I can see that, but given that Ingraham is herself an entertainer, I have to wonder if she's just fending off poachers.

Looks like somebody named Adam Baldwin took a shot at me today on Twitter -- I admit I had to Google his name to find out that he's an actor who now blogs at Breitbart's site. Starred on "Firefly," is now a tea party kinda guy. Doesn't like me, but he'll have to get in line for that.
Sorry to miss this thread... we were watching S7 of Buffy last night (my kids were raised on Joss). Next on our agenda is Firefly/Serenity. "Sure would be nice if we had some grenades, doncha think?"
With that said, however, and while I think Adam Baldwin's good at what he does, I've heard from Browncoats who went to Dragon*Con that AB is kind of a jerk to fans. So it doesn't surprise me (much) that he's being a jerk on Twitter. Although what does surprise me is that he doesn't have more sense - Jeffrey Donovan seems to be a good model for what a TV star's Twitter should look like. I don't even like Twitter but I follow him because it's so fun to see his little comments from the set and sometimes he posts pictures from filming. Way to build good buzz and make fans feel involved.

It's easy to have simple rules about when a women should or should not have an abortion when you will never be in this position. Small government conservatives want the government out of everything and at the same time believe that the government can regulate wombs. The staunch anti-abortionists do not want health care reform, nor headstart, nor welfare, nor child care assistance. They only care for the unborn.

In a sane society, no one would give a damn what you favor, or your special little reasons for it, when it's something that is none of your business. As proud as I am of America today (& today especially - here's why), I am also honest enough to admit that - judging by you, at least - we just aren't there, yet.
