It is the duty of the humor of any given nation in time of high crisis to attack the catastrophe that faces it in such a manner as to cause the people to laugh at it in such a way that they cannot die before they are killed.

We are in the "thermonuclear era".

We are also in the UNIX Epoch.

I wonder which one will last longer...

I grew up in suburban Chicago. When I was in high school, our social studies teacher explained that our little burb would be ground zero for a nuclear attack. A girl in my class asked why they (presumably the Russians) wouldn't bomb downtown. He explained that most of the blast would go out to the lake. The best "kill rate" would come by bombing the suburbs, which would destroy most of the Chicago area.

She was horrified, but I explained that it was a good thing, since we would be obliterated before we even knew what happened. The people on the edges of the blast would have a much more horrifying fate.

She called me morbid. I call it finding the best of a bad situation.

You're in a nukey kind of mood tonight. So I give you this: Air Force Had Plans to Nuke Moon

Fortunately, the United States came down off their explosion high and realized that nuking an orbiting planetary body for no particular reason might cross the line between "illustrating our technical prowess" and "cartoonish supervillainy," so they scrapped the plan and sent Armstrong up to land on the bastard instead. Think about that for a second: Neil Armstrong is considered a valid replacement for a nuclear missile.

re: #7 Soap_Man

Project Peacock, lol

The Americans didn't have the market cornered on psychotic R and D. On the other side of the Atlantic, the British had just put the finishing touches on their new nuclear bomb. Weighing in at seven tons, the Blue Peacock was a tactical nuclear device capable of a 10-kiloton explosion--just slightly less than that of Little Boy, the first nuke ever detonated.

So why the downgrade? Isn't the point of explosions to make them bigger and bigger until everybody forgets how small your penis is?

Well, the British needed a new and novel defense in case the Soviets came over the border of East Germany and so, instead of dropping the bomb from a plane, they decided to put the nukes in the ground. Nuclear landmines!

For safety's sake, each bomb came with a 10-second fuse, and while that's not long enough to disarm the bomb or get away to safety, it is probably long enough for the victim to repent a life's worth of regrets, chief amongst them being their tendency to frolic in German fields.

The bombs did have one major flaw, however: Burying anything in the ground during the winter would make it susceptible to intense cold, which could possibly affect the electronics. So the folks back in research and development started brainstorming:

"We could wrap it in blankets!" said one brilliant scientist.

"How about fiberglass insulation?" offered another.

"Why not just install a heater?" asked one sane and competent man.

"I like chicken!" screamed a random passing retard, completely unrelated to the science division in any way.

Guess which one they went with?

The chickens. The idea was they would be given enough food and water to stay alive for about a week, and the then their body heat would (somehow) keep the bomb's electronics defrosted enough to function.

In the long run, the project was canceled because the top brass thought that it wasn't politically savvy to plant nukes in Allied territory, or at least that was the official story.

But we all know it was probably those pussies at PETA again, having some sort of "moral objection" to underground nuclear-armed chicken prisons.

Heh, based on his sharing his optimal nuclear blast "kill rate" analysis with his class, I'd say it was he who should have been called morbid :P.

The reward is being immune to the blizzard sweeping virginia right now. The drinking wasn't much of a reward, seeing as how it was incredibly cheap bourbon that someone else bought. I'd say most foul stuff I've ever tasted, but I've tasted worse, if barely.

Texas chose to join the rest of the states on its own, not as any such "sister states". Where do you get this nonsense. The secession movement is not a "Perry movement", it a movement by citizens across this great state because they are fed up with Barrack Hussein Bin Laden Obama and all his facist czars and chronies. During the 1st Gulf War I had a female friend, my best friends sister, who was a CO stationed in SA. After a month of being treated like a 2nd class citizen by her saudi counterparts she finally snapped when one of their religious police smacked her in the back of the leg with a stick because she was wearing pants that stopped short of her ankles while she was out in public, off duty. She promptly busted him in his mouth. She was relived of duty and sent home, almost cost her her career.

"....That brings us to Part 2 of the liberal conceit: Liberals act in the public interest, while conservatives think only of power, elections, self-aggrandizement and self-interest.
It is an old liberal theme that conservative ideas, being red in tooth and claw, cannot possibly emerge from any notion of the public good. A 2002 New York Times obituary for philosopher Robert Nozick explained that the strongly libertarian implications of Nozick’s masterwork, “Anarchy, State, and Utopia,” “proved comforting to the right, which was grateful for what it embraced as philosophical justification.” The right, you see, is grateful when a bright intellectual can graft some philosophical rationalization onto its thoroughly base and self-regarding politics.
This belief in the moral hollowness of conservatism animates the current liberal mantra that Republican opposition to Obama’s social democratic agenda — which couldn’t get through even a Democratic Congress and powered major Democratic losses in New Jersey, Virginia and Massachusetts — is nothing but blind and cynical obstructionism.
By contrast, Democratic opposition to George W. Bush — from Iraq to Social Security reform — constituted dissent. And dissent, we were told at the time, including by candidate Obama, is “one of the truest expressions of patriotism.”
No more. Today, dissent from the governing orthodoxy is nihilistic malice. “They made a decision,” explained David Axelrod, “they were going to sit it out and hope that we failed, that the country failed” — a perfect expression of liberals’ conviction that their aspirations are necessarily the country’s, that their idea of the public good is the public’s, that their failure is therefore the nation’s...."

I put this in the spin off links above. I wish there was a category called "bad science" since lately, every time I turn around, some scientist or some country is finding inaccuracies in the IPCC AR4 report.

Fri Feb 5, 8:33 am ET - THE HAGUE (AFP) – The Netherlands has asked the UN climate change panel to explain an inaccurate claim in a landmark 2007 report that more than half the country was below sea level, the Dutch government said Friday.

Yesterday, Charles commented...

re: #625 Charles

Every single one of these trumped up scandals has been exaggerated way beyond its significance by the AGW denial industry. If you can show one organization created by human beings that does NOT have problems, I'll eat my words. But using any one of these silly incidents to prove a bigger problem with the theory of global warming is ridiculous, and it should be below you if you care about the truth.

I do care about the truth and the Netherlands cares about the truth and India cares about the truth, and AGW writer and supporter Fred Pearce cares about, and I don't think it's below these entities to care about the truth.

I care about AGW and I have NO issue with the body of respectable scientist world wide who find no need to deceive and obstruct.

It's time to clean house.

Yes, this is one of the articles I linked to Thursday and Friday, in the Guardian, the original article, written by Guardian's reporter Fred Pearce. Fred Pearce is an environment writer and author of "The Last Generation: How nature will take her revenge for climate change."

This is one of the article that Charles suggested was "below you if you care about the truth."

Where did I say it was? Where did India say it was? Where did Fred Pearce say it was? No one is. Do you ignore the racism that is in the GOP? Do you want to deny conservatism? Do you ignore the bigotry in the religious right? Do you want to deny G-D?

No.

But you want the GOP to clean up. You want the wacky religious right to stop interjecting politics into religion and spirituality. Well, I want bad science to stop interjecting themselves into AGW science. I want the charlatans out, I want the scientist who care more about politics and prestige out.

US missionary freed by NKorea starts journey home

North Korea's government announced Friday it would release Park, with official media quoting him as saying he now believed "there's complete religious freedom for all people everywhere" in the North.

"I would not have committed such crime if I had known that the (North) respects the rights of all the people and guarantees their freedom and they enjoy a happy and stable life," the official Korean Central News Agency quoted Park as saying.

North Korea is regarded as having one of the world's worst human rights records, with some 154,000 political prisoners held in six camps across the country, according to the South Korean government.

Somalian pirates flee from Danish Navy

Danish special forces serving as part of Nato's counter-piracy operation have freed the crew of a cargo ship boarded by pirates off Somalia.

They moved in after being assured by the captain that the crew had locked themselves in a safe room, a Nato spokeswoman told the BBC.

It seems the pirates escaped to their boat before the troops arrived but the 180m (590ft) vessel was being searched.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. We got bupkus here in Northern NJ. Not even a single snowflake coming down from the heavens. And I was so looking forward to snowmageddon. Oh well.

DC, MD, DE, and Southern NJ are getting hammered.

Meanwhile, there's rumors that a major scandal is set to break against NYS Gov. David Paterson involving what's claimed to be wife-swapping and drugs at the governor's mansion. I don't think that there's anything there to this rumor, but if there is, the NYT (which is supposedly leading on the reporting) is holding it because it would be literally buried behind the snowstorm coverage.

Paterson is wounded politically and a scandal would be a death knell to his reelection efforts. If this actually does pan out, say hello to Lt Gov Richard Ravitch, who was central to getting NYS out of the last major fiscal crisis in the 1970s. And Andrew Cuomo would definitely benefit, since he's all but likely to win in a primary race against Paterson.

This is part of what I'm going to say at a Heart Defect Conference in Tallahassee next week: (I'll probably post it again on the night of the 17th)

I was born on a Tuesday, and on Friday, they started to realize that something wasn’t right. I don’t know if my mother noticed it first, but that was probably the way it happened. Moms know their babies, and they are almost always the first one to pick up on any problem.

So they took me to my pediatrician, who figured out that I had some type of heart problem, but he wasn’t sure what. So he sent me to the nearest hospital that could help me.

The doctors there told my parents that I had a Congenital Heart Defect known as Tricuspid Atresia, and they should take me home and love me, because I wouldn’t be here that long. Well my parents didn’t think a whole lot of that statement, and neither did my doctor back home. In fact, he said it was completely unacceptable.

So he found four places that could try a surgical repair: Johns Hopkins, Mayo Clinic, the University of Virginia, and the Texas Heart Institute. Mayo and Texas he threw out because of the travel distance. Virginia, which was his own medical school, he eliminated because he didn’t think they had enough experience. That left us with Johns Hopkins. He called, and things were set up for that summer. My parents would take me to Baltimore, I would be evaluated, and if possible, the Hopkins surgeons would attempt the surgery.

*Part 2*

That night all hell broke loose. I went into heart failure, my heart rate shot up to 200 beats per minute, and I was rushed to my local hospital. I was there a week while they tried to get me stabilized; in the meantime, my pediatrician was working the phones, relaying information about me to the Hopkins doctors. They were telling him that I needed to get there as soon as possible.

Dad picked me up at the hospital and drove home to pick up momma, and we immediately left for Baltimore. Remember this occurred in 1967; I-95 hadn’t been completed yet. After driving all day they needed a break, so they stopped at a hotel in Petersburg, Virginia.

They had been asleep about an hour when Momma got up to check on me. She happened to glance out the window and it was snowing as hard as she had ever seen it snow. She woke daddy up, and we were back in the car and moving within a few minutes.

Cars were stuck in the snow all along the roadway, and daddy was stopping every fifteen minutes to wipe the windshield off with an old rag. When they passed through Washington he actually thought about putting me and momma on a train to Baltimore and catching up to us later. It’s a good thing he didn’t, because he found out later that the snow was so bad that the railroad shut down their trains for the night.

Three families were expected by the Children’s Medical Center that day, but we were the only ones who made it. The doctors examined me and then asked my parents for permission to do a Catherization. After the Catherization, the head Cardiologist came out to talk to my parents.

“He is down to hours,” he said. “We need to operate right now.” He added that my odds of surviving the operation were 50-50 but without it I had no chance. My parents had about five minutes to discuss it before they had to decide to risk the surgery or just let me slip away.

I was taken into the operating room at 10:30 that night, and the operation ended about three in the morning. My folks didn’t leave the hospital until they saw me afterwards, so it was almost daybreak when they went to a boardinghouse about a block away.

I have to admit that I begged the organizing committee for a few extra moments to speak to you today, almost to the point of embarrassing myself. Because that surgery took place on the night of February 17, 1967 - almost 43 years ago. My parents are just ordinary people; but that night they turned into a Heart Mom and a Heart Dad just like you. And I’m here today because they have always been willing to ask one more question, explore one more option, and go one more mile.

Johns Hopkins is the shit.

The only "mistake" I have found in that movie is Helen Taussig's hearing aid. The actress playing the part (Mary Stuart Masterson) thought the correct prop was so big it would look like a growth on her head and distract from the character, so she asked for a smaller one. Everything else - as far as I know - is RIGHT.

I don't care for Bill Ayers actions either, but apparently the only people they killed were members of their own team (from wiki):

In a November 2008 interview with The New Yorker, Ayers said that he had not meant to imply that he wished he and the Weathermen had committed further acts of violence. Instead, he said, “I wish I had done more, but it doesn’t mean I wish we’d bombed more shit.” Ayers said that he had never been responsible for violence against other people and was acting to end a war in Vietnam in which “thousands of people were being killed every week.” He also stated, "While we did claim several extreme acts, they were acts of extreme radicalism against property,” and “We killed no one and hurt no one. Three of our people killed themselves.”

That said, I'm not itching for a fight here. Just trying to figure out how many people Ayers actually killed...apparently, it was zero.

208 MandyManners  Sat, Feb 6, 2010 8:07:18am

Every political community includes some members who insist that their side has all the answers and that their adversaries are idiots. But American liberals, to a degree far surpassing conservatives, appear committed to the proposition that their views are correct, self-evident, and based on fact and reason, while conservative positions are not just wrong but illegitimate, ideological and unworthy of serious consideration. Indeed, all the appeals to bipartisanship notwithstanding, President Obama and other leading liberal voices have joined in a chorus of intellectual condescension.

It's an odd time for liberals to feel smug. But even with Democratic fortunes on the wane, leading liberals insist that they have almost nothing to learn from conservatives. Many Democrats describe their troubles simply as a PR challenge, a combination of conservative misinformation -- as when Obama charges that critics of health-care reform are peddling fake fears of a "Bolshevik plot" -- and the country's failure to grasp great liberal accomplishments. "We were so busy just getting stuff done . . . that I think we lost some of that sense of speaking directly to the American people about what their core values are," the president told ABC's George Stephanopoulos in a recent interview. The benighted public is either uncomprehending or deliberately misinformed (by conservatives).

This condescension is part of a liberal tradition that for generations has impoverished American debates over the economy, society and the functions of government -- and threatens to do so again today, when dialogue would be more valuable than ever.

Now, on what would have been his 82nd birthday, Reginald Earnshaw's sad place in history has finally been acknowledged.

On Friday, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission officially recognized him as the youngest known British service casualty in World War II.

The lad lived just 14 years and 152 days. He died when German planes attacked the SS Devon, the ship he was on, off the east coast of England on July 6, 1941. He had only served for several months.

When the Mexican Navy gunned down notorious Mexican drug cartel chief Arturo Beltran Leyva in December, tribute videos started popping up on YouTube almost immediately. They showed pictures of Beltran Leyva, aka "el Jefe de Jefes" (the Chief of Chiefs), with stacks of money, guns and bags of cocaine as the backdrop to catchy corridos (narrative ballads) exalting his life and times.

Such exhibitions of adulation, coupled with the staggering social and human toll the drug trade has taken on Mexico, prompted the country's ruling National Action Party to propose legislation in January to regulate narcocorridos, the danceable songs that recount tales of drug dealers and their exploits.

Surprisingly, many in the music industry are privately hailing the action, even as they acknowledge that narcocorridos have never been as massively popular as today.

"As a label executive, I'm against any type of censure," said one record executive who, like everyone else interviewed for this piece, asked to remain anonymous, due in large part to security concerns. "But as a Mexican I totally agree with this proposal. It's reprehensible that music -- which is a means of communication -- is used to praise this lifestyle."

It has been widely misreported that the proposal could punish artists and media executives with up to three years in prison for producing and airing narcocorridos. Instead, the proposed legislation, introduced January 20 by Congress member Oscar Martin Arce, seeks to regulate the mass diffusion of narcocorridos or other related material -- like videos or film -- by requiring that they be labeled with a warning, akin to what's required for tobacco, alcohol or ads for age-restricted movies. The warning label would be required only on content that calls for the commission of a crime.

Drudge is linking to a hysterical headline at the Daily Mailclaiming that the Iraqis "At last! Have they finally found a 'weapon of mass destruction' in Iraq?"

Ummm.. to answer the question. No.

They didn't. The photo indicates a cruise missile of some sort; possible a drone craft for target practice. It most certainly isn't a WMD.

It could potentially be a delivery device for a WMD, but by itself, this is merely a cruise missile and is quite possible a SS-3 Styx or a Silkworm missile variant with some of its components missing (or flipped upside down).

They keep coming.

It is at the point now where it is apparent these inacurracies were not over site problems, but rather efforts to manipulate an agenda.

What else is in there that is a lie? How do we trust them?

Sadly, we can't.

Billions of lives quite possibly could be at stake, maybe, and we can't get clean information.

Good afternoon from the East Coast! Looking out the window currently is like looking out of a snow globe from the inside. Been snowing and blowing around since last night. Not sure what the accumulation is, but I'm going to go found out soon.

Don't have to shovel, so I can go play in it. Didn't get the chance to in the earlier snowfall due to a foot injury, so I'm going to make sure I get out now. (Since I grew up in northern NYS I miss having snow to play in.)

Out to see what stores in Center City Philadelphia are actually open today. If the one brewpub (Nodding Head) is open I think I'll stop in there for lunch and a few pints (or is that the other way 'round?).

Leave it to the "Ten Commandments judge" to inject gay bashing into the tea party convention. In his big speech this afternoon, Roy Moore castigated President Obama for the far-right's usual litany of offenses and added this one for good measure: Obama had the audacity to issue a proclamation for "Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month." To Moore, that means the president "has elevated immorality to a new level."

"Go forth armed in the holy cause of liberty," he told the cheering tea partiers.

Iranian state media are reporting Iran has begun production of two new heavy duty missiles.

State radio and television say Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi opened two new missile production plants on Saturday to produce the Qaem and Toofan-5 missiles.

Vahidi was quoted in the semi-official Fars news agency saying the Qaem is designed to destroy low-speed, low-altitude targets, like helicopters, while the Toofan-5 missile will have two warheads, able to destroy tanks and armored vehicles.

The news comes as part of the 31st anniversary celebrations of the Islamic Revolution.

Earlier this week, Iran announced the test-launch of a Kavoshgar (Explorer) 3 missile, which is capable of carrying a satellite.

I posted a link yesterday about Russia might come over to our side but, the Chinese are digging in their heels.

I'm on a Confucius kick here lately, so here's another one:

"It is not possible to deliberate with those who have different purposes."

Russia and China, though themselves trying to carve up Asia between themselves, have very different interests where Iran is concerned. Look at the geography of the thing - Iran's just a bit too close to Russia for Russia's comfort.

That closeness has in the past led to dust-ups and all manner of high strangeness between the Russians and the Persians. It may yet again.

China, however, has no immediate fears from Iran, and would no doubt like nothing better than to have good relations and trade with them, not only to enrich themselves, but also to afford them a friendly nation by the underbelly of their chief regional adversary.

Yeah, I don't think I could have handled it as well as he did. They talked every week for about 15 years, more or less just like that.

He said that it was enough to hear her voice and know she was alive.

re: #324 Guanxi88

In the meantime, Israel just wants to be left alone.

Reminds me of the Soviets.

it needs to happen ... hopefully it will .... the mullahs need to play some DEFENSE once in awhile. if they get to attack all the time, they win. they need to clean up some mess "courtesy of US" for a change.

From Rep. Michele Bachmann's latest fundraising appeal for the ACU Strikeforce.

Acorn Hysteria:

Yet, Obama has used his enormous power as president to funnel millions of dollars into ACORN’s coffers to strengthen this radical group and his base.

Because Obama sees ACORN as his ideological “shock troops” leading his “revolution.”

Obama wants to use ACORN to radicalize America because he isn’t interested merely in defeating conservatives…

…HE WANTS TO ANNIHILATE US!

Biblical reference:

And by growing government into a LEVIATHAN, he will make small government, pro-family conservatives like you and me politically irrelevant.

The weird capitalization is all hers.

It's actually too bad she skipped out on the Tea Party Convention. With some minor tweaks she could have used this letter as her convention speech and probably received a standing ovation.

I'm skipping the Tea bagger threads for the rest of the day. Just too good of a vibe going.

Had a nice walk in the falling snow. Stopped in the nearby brewpub for a sandwich (pulled pork BBQ) and a few beers (nice chocolate stout). Now home with a purring cat on the lap, a cup of hot tea, and Steve Winwood on the stereo.

re: #190 Spare O'Lake

Okay, time's up.
Billy Ayers is an example of how wealth, politics and government incompetence can result in gross miscarriages of justice...even to the extent of allowing a seditious, murderous WEASEL like him to not only get off SCOT free, but then to launch a successful career by writing and bragging about his terrorist exploits.

Yet another example of Spare o Lakes continuing cowardly brainless attempts to make snide remarks about me and Jimmah on the overnights.
I suppose it gives you some sort of little thrill, but don't think it isn't patently obvious to all what you're doing. Again.
