Well. I thought about this and you could use it as a lesson in an indirect way. I little experiment to see if spelling of a sign affects the message and it's influence over you.
Show them two similar signs (non-political), one with misspellings and see how they feel. It would be helpful to teach them these sorts of critical analysis skills which they might use in the future as we are using them now.

SFZ -
This reminds me of some "making of" coverage of that Deadwood wild-west series on HBO. They tried very hard getting the diction and cussing right. I'm guessing the written correspondence of the time was more formal than spoken language, as always, and they made the people talk the way they wrote - so much more stilted and wordy. They also made the point that educated people - journalists - knew and used more words, but never spelt anything the same way twice even as late as the 1870's

It's interesting to see all of these misspellings and bad grammar. Most regular folks I know spell phonetically quite often. I'm somewhat of a stickler about both, but know that this doesn't prove anything concerning intelligence. What does show something about intelligence is the amazing amount of just plain old fashioned bad info out there that so many of these folks buy hook line and sinker. There's a certain amount of "self certainty" that seems to inhabit this mindset, and fact-checking as well as spell checking or grammar checking all go against this way of thinking. Honestly, what we're seeing is the expression of spleenocracy. And that kind of venting just doesn't allow for reflection. I really hope the job picture gets better. These folks really need to use their time more wisely.

Stanley Sea, Claude Monet,
I remember the old days, the "Before Time" when Republicans looked down on using bumper stickers at all, except maybe presidential elections, and then just the candidates' names, e.g. "Nixon Agnew '68" In the Before Time we didn't want all that glue messing up the paint or chrome on the bumper - the bumper of a big CAR, not a truck passing itself off doing the job of a car. Lots of bumper stickers was the mark of the hippy. Bumper stickers lived on VW vans, not anything in a Republican's garage.

I am one of them. If the kids' meals are $6 apiece, their contents are pretentious. Here on the local news, that was the per meal cost of the 'healthy' alternatives. I like grape tomatoes and kale as much as anyone, but kids can eat healthy for $1 if 'healthy' is the only thing on the agenda.

I don't know if I'll be able to access LGF from it, and if I can, I won't till I get comfortable in it. So I likely won't be around during the day next week. Still, I'm ready for it. It's got a good deal of upside and it's my transition out of retail, a move I needed to make.

gegenkritik styles himself as the "oppressed defender of Israel on LFG". (spelling error intentional) He sees Charles as having abandoned Israel while becoming a "prog". It's just more of the "perfidious Charles" theme, which makes no sense in reality. But reality is not a thing is which gegenkritik deals.

I would not argue that $6 is too much to pay for a child's school lunch, but lets not get confused about the fact there's a serious problem leading to a public health crisis that threatens to make the impact of smoking related illnesses look like a pink eye outbreak.

Selling mobile phones, you have to be smart. There's a lot of competition. That's true for inside sales as well, but I think the over-the-phone style of sales will suit me better, since I'm not going to be dealing with angry customers complaining when their phone doesn't work right. It's only some aspects of Jamie Oliver's effort that bug me, and I learned a whole lot about eating healthy and cheap in grad school and a fairly lengthy span of intermittent employment. Give me $6 and I can eat for 2 days, with fresh veggies and fruit at every meal, meat at least once a day, and usually some main course on the theme of a big pile of rice with some chunks on top. I know. It's even worse when the phone gets wet and the CPU is fried. Then you have to tell them they've lost their phone book. At Sprint, some customers receive customer service surveys. If the customer does not like the answers they get, even if you've done everything right, they will sometimes still give you a bad survey. So sometimes, people got their rankings dropped and there was nothing they could do to prevent the hit.

I always liked this name: Siobhan, pronounced - Shivaun
Siobhán (Irish pronunciation: [ˈʃɪwaːn̪ˠ] or [ʃəˈvˠaːn̪ˠ]; English pronunciation: /ʃəˈvɔːn/ shə-vawn), is a female Irish given name. It is ultimately derived from Hebrew words which meant "God is gracious". Alternative spellings of Siobhán include Siavon, Siobhan, Shivon, Siobhain, Siobhann, Siobhon, Siovhan, Shivaune, Shivaun, Shavon, Sioban, Shivonne, Shvaugn, Shivaughn, Shivaughne, Shavaughn, Shavaughne, Shavaugn, Shavaugne, Shavaun, Shavaune, Sheavaughn, Shavone, Shavonne and Chevonne. Its English equivalent is Joan and it is the feminine form of Seán.Siobhán is derived from the French name Jeanne[1], the feminine form of Jean (which is derived from the Hebrew language). It was introduced to Ireland when the Normans ruled the country. The name fell out of use when the Penal Laws outlawed the use of the Irish language. Its popularity increased in the mid twentieth century, along with many other Irish names like Áine and Aoife. The popularity of the actress Siobhán McKenna (1923-1986) also helped the resurgence of the name.

I would not argue that $6 is too much to pay for a child's school lunch, but lets not get confused about the fact there's a serious problem leading to a public health crisis that threatens to make the impact of smoking related illnesses look like a pink eye outbreak.
I will go further, since I haven't had lunch yet. IIRC, when little keloyd was eating school lunches every day, it was largely prefabricated stuff, like pizza. 1000 calories of healthy food* can be cheaper than 1000 calories of pizza. If the lunch ladies had orders, and if the system had the will, to make healthy food, I do not see money as an issue. Working class parents with 4 kids can't spend $24/day on lunch, and it's not needed to make healthy food.
Another related point - kids 30 years ago ate garbage at lunch and were thin. Today kids eat garbage at lunch and are fat. Food is only partly the scapegoat. Causality is not as it seems. In 10 years, we don't want kids eating JAmie Oliver's lunch and still being fat.
*This is super healthy and not labor intensive - whole grain bread, brown rice, potatoes (real ones, baked or boiled, not the 'tots'), in season oranges, apples, celery, carrots, other fruits occasionally, a little meat, beans, peanut butter - lots of good combinations, some less than 50 cents/meal.

I already agreed that $6 is not reasonable for a child's school lunch. All Mrs. Obama and Jamie Oliver are trying to do is give kids and their parents the same type of education about food you obviously have. I am still struggling to determine what you find pretentious here...except perhaps Oliver himself, something I am not here to argue about. As a Jewish kid growing up in Christian neighborhoods, my parents realized that if I didn't participate in Christian festivities (namely the holiday choir, caroling and Easter egg hunts) I would be ostracized or humiliated.
But mother always told me I wasn't to tell the other children that Santa and the Easter Bunny didn't exist. It was their holiday and I was to respect it.
I didn't have a problem not believing in Santa since we had Hanukkah, but the Easter Bunny was a problem. Every year I'd ask my mother, "Are you SURE we don't believe in the Easter Bunny?" (It was the chocolate and the jelly beans that got my attention.)

If anyone is trying to keep their salt consumption down, you might want to try these spices: Benson's Gourmet Seasonings
No salt, no sugar, no MSG, no Potassium Chloride. Reasonable prices. And I don't work for these people and don't make a cent if you decide to buy something.
Their Salt Substitute (they call it Table Tasty) seems to me to be a little stronger than salt, so apply lightly until you figure out who much you want/need.

Interesting, although the connection with Passover is undisputed. It does explain (maybe) where the name came from, although the history there seems a little thin. But I don't think there was any attempt to piggyback on such events; Passover's been a given for thousands of years.
I'm aware of the connection of Christmas with a number of earlier holidays, all ultimately tied to the winter solstice. Here, the appropriation of an existing holiday is pretty blunt, as there's no dating of any sort attached to Jesus' birth. In fact, a large number of admonitions against the celebration of Christmas have been issued by Christian authorities of many stripes over the last several centuries.

Passover falls on the 14th of the month Nisan in the Hebrew calendar, which is a lunar calendar. Because the lunar year is shorter than the solar year, every several years there is a "leap month" before Nisan so that Passover should always occur in the spring.

Correct, about the leap months. The Hebrew calendar is, in fact, a lunisolar calendar, and attempts to maintain synchrony between both cycles.

Pastor's Corner: Five unknown Easter facts
Despite a maximum 39 hours dead, according to Jewish counting, He was dead three days.
The number 39 is one less than 40. Forty is a significant number in Scripture. It's a symbol of an extended period of time. Jesus didn't stay in the tomb over an extended period of time -- Jesus quickly defeated death -- He stayed dead the least amount of time possible while still fulfilling three-day death prophesy (Mark 8:31).
...... Jesus could have preached to fallen angels in prison between His death and Resurrection. I Peter 3:19 says, "through whom also he went and preached to the spirits in prison." This might be the most difficult Bible verse to interpret. Genesis 6:2 says, "the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose." This could be referring to angels marrying women on earth, thus causing God to destroy the earth with a Flood. These disobedient angels might be the one's Jesus preached victory to.

Exactly. Although it isn't hard to find canned vegetables with little or no added stuff. The canned tomatoes I often buy contain tomatoes, water and citric acid.

The monks(?) and nuns were very kind to us. We got to visit the tomb, or I suppose the place where Jesus was said to have risen. It was a little coffin actually, tiny, maybe 5' long and this very, very old man was standing in front of it. He had a beard down past his chest and a smile from ear to ear as we all peeked into the little room. It was a wonderful visit.

The celebration of Passover took place just before the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Christ, PLUS both holidays are "moveable" feasts (annual holidays that do not fall on a fixed date but vary according to astronomical occurrences).
Actually, Passover always falls on the 15th of the month--it's just a lunar month, so it looks like it's moving around if you use the solar-based calender.

In the old Catholic catechism, he was in "Limbo", a netherworld without punishment where the Old Testament innocent were held. His visit liberated them to heaven. See "The Harrowing of Hell" in medieval art.
So, all of these terrible sinners began to show up in heaven, and Jesus decided to have a little word with Satan about it. So, he descended to hell, and knocked on the door, and said, "I'd like to have word with you about how you're running this place! People that should be damned are getting let out, and showing up in heaven! What kind of an eternal torment are you running here?"
And Satan said, "JC, don't blame it on me. I throw them into hell, but your mother keeps pulling them out."

Correct, about the leap months. The Hebrew calendar is, in fact, a lunisolar calendar, and attempts to maintain synchrony between both cycles.
The Muslim calender, on the other hand, is strictly lunar, and everything rolls slowly back through the solar year.

It is a marvelous structure. Constantine ordered the temple to Aphrodite to be destroyed and by legend, Helena, his mother supervised the building of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre along with numerous other sites which she went around and identified as holy sites related to Jesus.
Many of the holy sites in Jerusalem have no basis in historical fact, but they still serve as a memorial to the persons and places mentioned in the Greek scriptures, and certainly serve as a reminder of the ancient beginnings of Christianity.

Only the Catholics, Orthodox, and some Protestants consider the Holly Sepulchre to be "The Place". There is another location across town which some Protestants assign as "the Place of the Skull". That hillside has a strong image of a skull, caused by the arrangement of some caves. The idea seems to have started with General "Chinese" Gordon in the 1800s.

I'm just realizing anew how essential it is to teach children what an apostrophe is for, BEFORE they hit the streets with incomprehensible protest signs.
It's hard to use "it's" correctly, because it's apostrophized differently than its cousins. It's true, "it's" is not the possessive, but the contraction. It's not a hard rule to remember once you have its basic idea.
There's another rule for when people should use their head and when they're safe using their gut feeling, but I can never write it our right.

The Hebrew word is 'Sheol', which has a similar connotation, a sort of place somewhere where the spirits of the dead go.
As you aptly point out, and Rightwingconspirator mentions, traditionally, hell, Sheol, hades were designations for the grave, the place of the dead. It was not a place of suffering, or torment, or fire, or any conscience beings... if there was any "agony" it was the concept of being separated from the living.
It was primarily the Platonic influence into later Judaism and early Christianity that molded the concept into a place where there were souls that were aware of their surrounding and in some sort of torment.

Well there is the Temple which is historically accurate. The Western Wall, as you know, is part of what remains of Solomon's Temple.
Well yes, the Temple is certainly the actual historic location of the first and second temple, and remained as that until the destruction of the second temple between 66-70 C.E.
At Passover this year, I passed around a small Jewish coin, called a prutah (the widows mite of the King James version of the scriptures) which was minted my the Jews during the revolt. This coin is a second year coin (they dated the coins from the beginning of the revolt, 66 C.E. so this coin was minted in 67 C.E) and you will see it mentions "The Freedom of Zion" which was the "battle" cry so to speak.
That's why I passed the coin around, since the true meaning of Passover (and the Christian Easter celebration) is freedom. In Israel's case, the freedom from Egypt, in the case of Christians the freedom from death, an everlasting life.

I know when I was a baby, my grandmother was horrified that my mother wanted to wait until she could attend the Baptism before having me baptized.

Ugh...the price of loving one's dogs. After a 3 1/2 hour drive back from Tahoe in the rain, I decided I'd take the coastal highway the last thirty miles just in case there was a break in the weather. Both dogs were sleeping soundly in the back seat, and the weather was miserable (high winds, steady rain), but as we got past Moss Beach, they magically awoke together and started yapping away as they immediately realized we were near their favorite beach. So we went. I lasted about 10 minutes out there completely unprotected. Threw the ball three times into the surf for Banjo, and kept Fozzie on leash as he takes off for a minimum of a half hour whenever we go. Now we're home, finally, and both dogs are sleeping on either side of me on the couch as Bflat (our cat) purrs next to me.

Yep.
I have to tell you - I've been thinking seriously lately about taking some classes, because I'm afraid much of what I know is from what you call the nuns' 95% solution. There is much I do not know, and should know.
No harm in looking for the roots, but be fairly selective in your guru. My wife is an adult bible study leader, and I swear she doesn't have the 95%.

I hate to say it, but yea.
Of all the classic literature there is, how much of it is just sitting around and waiting for 21st century special effects. 3D, CGI, Pixar, whatever the hell. And he goes and re-writes practically the one and only story that would fit that bill perfectly.
There's a 1970's version that is really terrific. I think it's done in stop motion? Like Clash of the Titans was. I rarely see remakes because it ruins my nostalgia. I'm not going to see that one.
If someone is going to do a crazy version of Alice, I have to say that I would like to see a film adaptation of The Looking-Glass War. I was turned on to this by a sixth-grader I taught back in the day, and it is a very weird, but compelling, retelling of Alice.

The best way to cut a telemarketing call short is to say you are a student, or a seamstress.
I don't know what the deal is with seamstresses, but the two telemarketing jobs I held very briefly both instructed it's employees not to bother with seamstresses.

You wouldn't have to even do a crazy version of it. You could tell it exactly as written. Maybe Peter Jackson would do it right.
Alice in Wonderland is the first part of the book. She goes back again "Through the Looking Glass" in a second dream, the second part of the book.
I never heard of The Looking Glass War! But Through the Looking Glass is where she meets the Red Queen who's a bit of a tyrant.
Lots of messages in Alice about self-identity (political commentary also). Who you think you are, what shapes you, as well as the perceptions of others through their experience. There's the child's prospective (Alice is like 12 or 13 in the book), because all children want to be grown up, while the adults are all like impatient children.

If you do get Rosetta Stone, let me know how that works for you. I've been interested in getting the Spanish one.
Rosetta Stone is a great interactive learning program, you need a good headset with microphone to use it comfortably. It starts with single words as depicted graphically with images. It works on the pronunciation with you on each word, you have to match your spoken word as sound graphed on the screen to the way that the program's sound graph shows on the screen.
Then you move on to simple sentences and stringing words together in the correct format for the language. I absolutely recommend the program to anyone, it really will enable almost anyone to learn a language if they are serious about doing it and willing to expend the time and effort. By ensuring that you are using the native and correct pronunciation you gain a lot of confidence in your ability.

And today I see Glenn Reynolds pimping an interview with white supremacist Robert Stacy McCain, at the 'jumpinginpools' website -- which is run by a complete psycho who registered numerous sock puppets at LGF to pimp his blog and up-ding his own posts, and engaged in a bizarre smear campaign at numerous sites, pretending to be different people. He's mentally ill.
Right wing blogs are completely off their gourds.

Spotted at Tea Party Rally:
Impeach Hairy Read.
Seriously though. Looking at these signs makes me wonder about the alleged result in this poll: Meet The Tea Partiers: Male, Rich and College Educated.
"Of this core group of Tea Party activists, 6 of 10 are male and half live in rural areas," CNN reports. "Nearly three quarters of Tea Party activists attended college, compared to 54 percent of all Americans, and more than three in four call themselves conservatives."
However, one month later, TPM was reporting: Poll: Tea Party Is The Home Of The Angry White Woman.
The Quinnipiac poll out this morning shows the just 13% of voters all themselves tea partiers, and those that do are on the far fringes of anger at and distrust of the government. The group is basically Republican -- 77% identified themselves that way, with just 5% calling themselves independent. In a surprise, 55% are women, while just 45% are men.

Won't be anytime soon - I almost fell off my chair when I saw the price! Perhaps Ebay or Craigslist would be a better way to go.
@ Reine - I agree on those names - I also love Sinead. (As in Sinead O'Connor.) My eldest son's name is James, and my Dad always called him Seamus, which he told me was its Irish equivalent.
Not that I would wish to be accused of advocating illegal activity, I certainly would never wish to do that. I have heard however that some people without such deeply held moralistic beliefs have managed to acquire that program from certain torrent sites without having to pay for it.
