Captain America #104, ‘Slave of … the Skull!’ (August 1968)

Arts • Views: 9,932

Tonight’s cover from the Lizard Collection is in incredible near-mint condition: Captain America #104, published in August 1968, the fifth issue of the resurrected Captain America series. This is an illustration Quentin Tarantino would appreciate — a circular firing squad by a mob of Red Skull cronies.

This book will soon be on the way to the CGC for grading.

Does that guy in the wheelchair have a gun that fires directly over his head?

I guess there's no real reason not to, but I'd find that unnerving.

I feel bad for the guy whose weapon is a knotted bedsheet. I mean, you've got wheelchair gun, pistol, iron arm, evil laughter, rope, overdeveloped musculature-- and then one guy with a knotted bedsheet and a bad hat.

Maybe he just coincidentally escaped from prison and ran into the middle of this fight.

Is the reason they have that modesty cover over the machine because it's a female robot?

Hurray for common sense:

The state cannot take children away from a mother who tests positive for marijuana use without evidence that shows her drug use endangers the children, the Oregon Court of Appeals has ruled.

In a decision issued today, the court reversed a Marion County juvenile court ruling that the state Department of Human Services had jurisdiction over two children, a 19-month-old and a 6-month old. The state had argued that the mother's marijuana use "presented a reasonable likelihood of harm to her two children."

But the appeals court agreed with the mother's argument that the state failed to provide any evidence connecting her behavior with risk to the children.

Yay Oregon!

Then there are shows where the subtitles greatly add to the enjoyment. For a while, I was addicted to a miniseries about the 47 Ronin that was playing on my local Asian-languages channel.

The line I have always remembered...spoken solemnly by a seventeenth-century samurai...is, "the lord and I are not on the same wavelength".

Fracked up weekend.

Got to Houston last Thursday, and was in baggage claim when I tripped over somebody's laptop bag and hit the floor. Beat the shit out of my knees and left hand, 4 stitches in lip, right arm in splint. ER doc said it wasn't broken but had it looked at again when I got home, the bone is cracked, but it is a non dislocated fracture. Got a better splint and a sling and follow up in two weeks.

I still did my speech, but I looked like a train wreck. I'm on blood thinners, so I am bruised to high heaven. Was thinking about getting my bag, finding bus to hotel, and just wasn't watching where I was going - so it's all my own damn fault.

Talk about great captioning - I'm sure everybody's seen this, but I just saw it again recently - Birthday Greetings from Woodstock, Joe Cocker - You have to watch the captions.

How has this tiny group of lunatics become a driving force in politics? This can't possibly last more than one election cycle. There just aren't enough people.

Here from the Fox affiliate in Philly (say that 10x fast :>). They managed to find one African American man to interview, but the crowd was completely white.

Found this last night

Faced with the split second decision to either toss the grenade into a corner and run, or take the blast himself to save the life of his friend and possibly others in the immediate area of the ammo shed, he chose to sacrifice himself...As each precious, life-giving unit of blood was drawn from a troop, it was immediately taken around the corner to the operating room where it was infused, still warm, into the critically injured soldier on the table.

Well, it does indicate that the white people in the Tea Party are in favor of diversity, even if they can't figure out how it works, so I guess that's something. They are trying.

Uh, I think it's mainly the fault of the person who left it lying there.

My guess is that it's a rally so they went, not that the diversity theme necessarily drew them. Half the time, you can't understand the speakers at those rallies anyway.

There were apparently 8 African American speakers and 1 Latino speaker. We'll see if their presence draws more minorities to the fold. I'm guessing no.

Do I add salt before or after I add the meat to the grill.

Just kidding.

A couple of weeks ago I had to have my 16 year old cat put down because of cancer. Since then our other cat has been craving attention and acting lonely, so today we went out and picked up a kitten. In the several hours since we brought the little guy home, his eyes have watered up quite a bit - it looks like he has a cold.

We probably can't get him to the vet until Tuesday. Does anyone here have an idea what we can do for the little fellow to make him more comfortable?

They do seem to make a fairly consistent effort to get some racial diversity in their speaking panels, and I have to say, I approve of that. It's tokenism, sure, but as I said above, and not totally in snark, they are trying, and there are worse ways to try. I sense that many of the less problematic of them really don't understand why this movement isn't attracting a more diverse crowd, and would be happy to see black and Latino and Asian and NA and etc TPers show up.

That said, I doubt there's any way they can really sell this outside the base they've already discovered. The formula works, but it appeals to a fairly specific demographic, and that demographic is, among other things, overwhelmingly white.

It might be a cold, but it could be something as innocuous as an allergy or adaptation to a new environment. Wait til Tuesday and if his eyes are still watering a lot, take him to the vet. Hell, might be best to take him anyway and make sure his vaccinations are all up to date.

Yeah, Bush did very well with diversity in his appointments and staff in general. I think it was something he personally thought was quite important. Being a Texan, I think, gave him some perspective there.

And yeah, I think basically, the Tea Party doesn't have a whole lot to appeal to most non-white communities in the States, and there are a lot of things about them that are undoubtedly off-putting to any who might be interested.

I think I failed the man test. I got my act together, got to the hotel, took a long shower and went to bed. Woke up in the middle of the night hurting all over and called 911.

He did! He collected all of the smartest, most intellectual minority R's that he could to be in his original cabinet. Powell lasted until just after the difficulties began in Iraq. His second wife (self claimed) hung in there a lot longer. I assume they had something special, in an ethereal sense, between them.

I never bought that, I think it was just a weird slip of the tongue.

EOA (Emerging OUTRAGE Alert):

The Justice Department has redesigned its website, apparently as part of a globalist plot:

Justice-website redesign goes globalist, dumps Old Glory

The United States Justice Department has launched a redesigned website, described by some as "Darth Vaderish" for replacing a waving flag banner with a black panel. But the biggest concern raised by critics is a quote posted at the top of the page attributed to a 1930s globalist.

The words are, "The common law is the will of Mankind issuing from the Life of the people."

According to U.S. House documentation, the quote is one of the multitude of statements engraved outside the Justice building in Washington. The full phrase is, "'The common law is the will of mankind issuing from the life of the people, framed through mutual confidence, sanctioned by the light of reason.''

According to the American Spectator, which has documented the controversy, some attorneys believed the quote was pulled or adapted from the writing of the 18th Century British jurist Sir William Blackstone, who "influenced not only British law, but also the American constitutional and legal system."

However, the report cites "other Department of Justice employees" who say the quote comes from British lawyer D. Wilfred Jenks, author of "The Common Law of Mankind" essays in the 1950s.

Jenks has been identified by multiple sources as a leader in the movement for "international law" during the 1930s. After World War II, he was part of a campaign to set up global workers rights. [...]

Well then... if the American Spectator has documented the controversy, then WND's headline and story must be true, no?

My God, it makes me nervous just looking at that thing.

They had some apartment buildings that were similarly--creative--in Israel somewhere. Couldn't rent them out, they just looked too weird. Finally, the buildings became home to a bunch of extremely Orthodox families. Cheap rent, room for the kids, and the whole visual aesthetic thing is considered culturally unimportant, so they didn't mind that the building looked weird.

It's a rant against ... Alfred Kinsey. All these years later they are still ranting about Kinsey. Here's just a wee bit of the froth over there:

Big Pharma and Big Porn – emboldened by the academic cover Kinsey's work provided – conspire in a cycle of saturating society in images of perversion, creating debased addictions that soon render men impotent, then marketing to them anti-impotency prescriptions. Mass media delivers both the disease and "the cure," as was always the intent, reports "Sexual Sabotage."

Goodness. Male impotency is a conspiracy by "Big Pharma and Big Porn".

What will they think of next?

Same here except that I got on after LGF had been through Crisis of Infinite Viewpoints and was focused chiefly on pointing out the dangers of overly radical conservatives, and when topics involving Israel come up I tend to just stay very, very quiet or not bother doing more than skimming (people probably noticed how I was only making about 10 posts a day during the entire cropped photos scandal)

So in short in reality I'm probably not much like you except that I am a liberal...

Anyone here ever seen "The Mostly Unfabulous Social Life of Ethan Green"? The movie, not the comic strip.

Ethan's ex is marrying a Log Cabin Republican pundit who writes books about being a gay conservative. Ethan is crushed. He shows up at the ex's house with candy, balloons, flowers and a stuffed animal, and starts singing their song outside when the ex won't let him in.

Turns out that he ex and his fiance are meeting inside with their wedding planner. Who is Ethan's mother.

This is not the funniest part of the movie. The funniest part of the movie is the deeply depressive chain-smoking real-estate agent, who, when asked about the plumbing in the house she's showing, screams "If you're going to keep asking all these fucking questions, you can just forget about it!!!!"

It's a good source. JPost, Haaretz, and Ynet. I really need to improve my Hebrew enough to at least scan the Hebrew-language papers.

I did watch an Israeli movie last night. Good, but depressing as hell. I think I need to order "Arzit, The Paratrooper Dog" from Netflix. That looks fun. Anyone know if there are any good Israeli sitcoms out on DVD with subtitles? I keep hearing "Arab Labor" is great, and it has Mira Awad in it, but Netflix doesn't know when or if they'll have it.

Not necessarily. My g/f found a bunch of kittens "abandoned" by the mother, but most likely she was killed by a car or something. They all had eye gunk issues and one actually didn't survive. I didn't want to tell you that, but the infection was so bad, they had to put him down.

Then there was the asshole who pushed 6 little babies out of his car down the street from me. My yard man saw it and came running to my door, but he didn't get the license plate. I tried to find them homes, but ended up taking them to the H.S. The babies get adopted quickly.

What about "Jellyfish"?[Link: movies.yahoo.com...]

I'll check it out.

I watched "The Band's Visit", but what I didn't realize is that it's mostly in English and Arabic, so not so useful.

I started to watch "Late Marriage", but it didn't pull me. Last night I did watch "Or, My Treasure", which, as I said, is well-done, but killer sad.

"Or, My Treasure" is about a mother and daughter living in Tel Aviv. Mom's a hooker, and Or, her only child, does her best to keep her safe. I notice that the way I watch movies changes as I get older. A few years ago, I would have completely identified with the daughter. Now I find myself putting myself in the mom's shoes more. Interesting.

Part that just killed me, is when Or sleeps with the cute boy from the apartment next door, and his mother comes by to tell her to end it, because she clearly doesn't want her precious Ido involved with the zona's kid. Heartbreaking.

From that Jpost article:

Denis MacShane, chairman of the 2006 Parliamentary Inquiry into Anti-Semitism; chairman of the European Institute for the Study of Contemporary Anti-Semitism; and author of Globalising Hatred: The New Anti-Semitism, said: “This sudden rise in anti-Semitic incidents should be a warning sign that hate against Jews is on the march.

But when the anti-Semitic BNP win seats as MEPs, when university campuses host preachers of anti-Jewish hate, or when a British ambassador says Jews should not serve on public inquires, why should we be surprised? The open hate of Israel fanned by jihadi Islamist ideologues is creating an unacceptable climate of fear for Jews. Politicians need to take the lead and say loudly and clearly that British Jews should not have to face intimidation and threats.”

Well whadya know.

That's a lot of talent, yeah. I used to be a techie in the theater-- doing lighting work. I really like theater stuff, though it'd be great if we could do it without all those actors.

I act and help on tech stuff. Whose side I'm on depends on which I'm currently doing./

Actually, I'm usually on the tech crew's side, as they get little credit and have less time to do their thing. Even when I'm acting, I go around muttering, "damn actors..." I tell my fellow actors, "You want to be seen? You want that platform to not collapse? You want that key prop to be where you can pick it up before your entrance? Keep mouthing off and none of that will happen".

It will be interesting to see if anything changes after Queen Elizabeth. Will the next monarch stay mostly in the background of government like she has, or will they try to be more involved? If Prince Charles takes the throne, I have a feeling the monarchy will get one step closer to irrelevance.

"Newsweek" and I are done, I will no longer be renewing my subscription. It has turned into a magazine by idiots for idiots with nothing but cover to cover 500 word essays on how the world could be so much better if only we were all smart enough to listen to them. If they are all so smart why are they stuck working for Newsweek? huh?

Their latest published facile, one-dimensional, rosy tinted, piece of crap is about keeping terrorists from getting nuclear weapons. Their solution? Total global nuclear disarmament, thats right, if every gave up their nukes then the terrorists couldn't possibly get any! Right?

How effing stupid do they think I am? Or maybe I should just be asking how stupid are they?

They think you're stupid enough to keep buying what they're selling. Newsweek was always fairly liberal, but now they've gone the Kumbaya route, hoping that rainbows, unicorns, and smiling young people of all ethnicities singing "I'd Like To Teach the World To Sing" on a hillside will protect us.

I know a fair number of people with that outlook. At least until they get robbed, mugged, etc. Wishing and hoping is good, but "long life through superior firepower" is better IMO.

Looks like the Temecula Valley Islamic Center protest was a bust for the bigots. While they seemed to have managed a small crowd (based on the photos) they were outnumbered by supporters:

[Link: www.latimes.com...]

A small group of protesters took over a patch of grass across from the Islamic Center of Temecula Valley on Friday for a vocal but relatively tame protest against a proposed mosque, though they were greatly outnumbered by supporters from area churches who were there to support the Islamic Center.

The rally was held during the Islamic Center's Friday prayers and, at the urging of organizers, a few protesters brought their dogs, which many Muslims would consider an insult.

"This is America. This is a Christian country, this is not a Muslim country," said Zorina Bennett, 50, of Temecula, one of about 20 who attended the anti-mosque rally. "They are known terrorists. Read the Koran. They are trained to kill people from the time they're in their youth."

Bennett took her dog Meadow to the protest, knowing that many Muslims believe that the saliva of dogs is impure.

...

Leaders of the Temecula Islamic Center, operating in an industrial area of the southwest Riverside County city, said they have been dismayed by some of the allegations and objections to the new mosque because the organization has been in the city for more than a decade without incident.

But on Friday, they said, they were heartened by the strong show of support from people of all faiths and beliefs.

"This is much better than I could have even expected. It helps show that we are part of this community, that we belong here," said Hadi Nael, chairman of the Temecula Islamic Center.

I adore dogs.

There's been a lot of theorizing about how dogs were domesticated. My sixth-graders read a novel called "Maroo of the Winter Caves", which is an adventure story about a stone-age family. The children find an orphaned puppy, and convince their parents to let them keep it by reminding them of a man they met at a tribal gathering who had a tame dog that helped him hunt. Some scholars theorize that it might have happened like that, puppies being taken in, or a lone wolf deciding to form an alliance with a human it ran across.

They also think it might have happened over a long period of time, as human hunters attracted scavengers to their camps. The piece of research I find most interesting is one that looks into the fact that apparently, out of all the world, only humans and domestic dogs understand pointing. Wolves don't, and chimps don't.

They theorized it might have something to do with how wolves were domesticated, so they worked for years with Siberian foxes. They brought the foxes in, and the only test for being in the program was that a researcher stuck and hand in the cage with them. If the animal attacked, it was out. If it showed fear, it was out. If it sniffed the hand, or seemed calm, it was in.

Then they mated the calm foxes with each other, and repeated the process.

Forty generations later (foxes have a short breeding cycle), they had foxes that were easily tamed, human-friendly, and understood pointing.

The suspicion is that we essentially did something like that with dogs, less intentionally and over a long period of time.

363 freetoken  Sun, Aug 1, 2010 12:38:45am

re: #362 SanFranciscoZionist

That fox story was in the news not too long ago.

The genetic evidence that dogs are just domesticated wolves looks now to be a sealed case. There was some question about whether other canids were the source, but the latest I saw sounded pretty firm that genetically they are wolves.

Wolves are interesting in that, before humans came to NA, the wolves won the contest for top predator, beating the saber tooth cat. The pack instinct is an evolutionary winner, as not only wolves but other species have shown.

I don't know if scientists will ever be able to determine exactly where the wolf was first domesticated. I suspect it was in the Levant during the last great glaciation, because it would have taken so many generations to make the domesticated animal that already shows up in the very earliest part of civilization.

From Friday's Washington Post:

This might be one of the dumbest articles I've ever read arguing against cutting defense spending. He actually tries to make a case saying that drawing down the size of the military during peacetime is a primary factor in starting of new wars. Seriously, there are so many fallacies in his argument that I don't even know where to begin.

Impact of past defense cuts should warn of risks

After World War I, our armed forces shrank from 2.9 million men in 1918 to 250,000 in 1928. The result? World War II became more likely and its early battles more costly. Imagine how Hitler might have acted in 1939 had several hundred thousand American troops been stationed in France and Poland. Under such circumstances, it is doubtful he would ever have launched his blitzkrieg. Likewise, Japanese leaders might have thought twice about attacking Pearl Harbor if their homeland had been in imminent danger of being pulverized by thousands of American bombers and their fleet sunk by dozens of American aircraft carriers.

Congress looks like they're going to be repealing those provisions because it would have resulted in a significant regulatory burden on small businesses. It was a flawed provision - but one that would have generated significant revenue to balance the health care bill's CBO score.

The problem is that eliminating the regulatory burden here means that revenue will have to be generated elsewhere.

I doubt it's going to be a big deal. It looks like they're trying to fix it. The 92nd Street Y is about 12-15 stories on their main building, and 10-12 stories tall on their adjacent building. It's one of the largest in the City - and I'm not quite sure of the square footage (which dictates the real size of the buildings - not height), but the Cordoba proposal would not have the square footage of the 92nd Street Y.

The JCC of Manhattan has a 8-10 story building.

Both buildings have been cited as models for the Cordoba House proposal in bringing those kinds of services to Lower Manhattan.

Good... I usually don't apologize for an opinion. And my opinion on this subject certainly doesn't have anything to do with my opinion of other points that I agree with you on. Does it?

You say "allegedly obtrusive size." First off, it is an existing building. I don't remember anyone complaining about the allegedly obtrusive size of the Burlington Coat Factory HQ in the past.

And what in New York City is not obtrusive size-wise? Have you ever been to NYC. Fourteen stories is small, like 7-11 small in comparison. Even small in NYC is an obtrusive size.

I don't see him arguing that it's the primary factor in starting wars but more about deterrence and how we were able to respond to threats. I happen to think Mr. Boot is fair and generally pretty bright.

Let's take his idea of pre-World War II deterrence then.

First of all, the United States had a strong isolationist bent in the years leading up to WWII, and it wasn't until after Pearl Harbor that mindset changed - and even then, there were factions that STILL didn't want to be involved. The last thing the US citizenry was interested in while struggling to get past the Great Depression was another involvement in a foreign war.
Secondly, Boot's preparedness ideas reads like a damn game of RISK. In case you forgot, Hitler invaded freaking Russia, who had a standing army of a few MILLION. His theories of having standing armies against a madman hellbent on world domination is simply foolish.

This doesn't even touch on whether Russia would have possibly aligned with the Axis nations in response to a country halfway around the globe having a military force in Poland and/or France, not to mention whether those countries would even WANT our forces there.

Consider this. Currently, twenty percent of the federal budget goes to military spending, and currently the US outspends every other nation in the world.
COMBINED, and he's saying that we should keep this pace going, even if it eventually bankrupts us.

Yay, that's the kind of inspirational speech I need before going off to start my own company!

Seriously, just figuring out whether to be sole proprietor or incorporated has been an endless amount of reading.

I'm the last person to ask for business advice. The only thing I know is that most people say to incorporate.

re: #429 Stanley Sea

You do not send 1099's to an Inc. Most large businesses (Home Depot etc.) are Inc.

The 1099's your husband should be concerned with is for any subcontracted labor he uses.

I work as an independent as well. They're only concerned with sole proprietors so that they can make sure that people aren't working off the grid (so to speak)

This new provision is not about labor, payments labor is already supposed to be reported on a 1099 for more than 600 dollars paid out for services, this new provision is for goods, if you purchase more than 600 dollars in good from a vendor in your everyday business expenses.

The part about goods is new.

I think you're arguing a different point. I didn't see Boot arguing that having all those additional troops would have prevented any war, just that it could have.

I think you both have a point. We could use more troops, especially right now, but 20% of the annual budget is a pretty large number.

Got it. Does it still exclude Inc? Didn't say in the Yahoo article. That would certainly help. I'm trying to think of a supplier who isn't incorporated? (1/2 cup so far, no where near enough)

I think there is a lot of confusion as to what the requirements apply to. Hopefully, it will be repealed and that will be the end of it.

Thanks for everyone's input!

I didn't read it that close either, but I got the "goods" part. I guess technically since I sell jewelry, and report my income, if I buy over 600 dollars in rocks and silver from a local small shop (and I do spend that in a year), I guess I have to send him a 1099.

My sons 4 closest friends showed up last night at about 7 pm (they were expected,,,, we're on vacation and they're staying with us the last 3 days here)

a mere 16 hours later, we have already gone through 16 hamburgers, 14 hot dogs, 2 lbs of potato salad, 2 lbs of macaroni salad, 7 lbs of BBQ chicken wings (all last night), an entire box of instant pancake mix, 7 liters of soda, almost 2 gallons of milk and half a gallon of OJ.

NOT to mention the various snack cakes, cookies, candies and 2 containers of ice cream

OY!!

if you pay state and federal taxes on a occasional piece of jewelry, you are more upstanding than me....exemplary citizenship

Mmmm. Crab veal.

I just got back from a store I rarely go to, where I found veal stock on the shelf. The same Kitchen Basics brand that provides chicken, vegetable and beef stock. But I've never seen veal stock before, anywhere. So I snagged a couple of quarts.

At the checkout, you would have though I had a couple quarts of meth, going by the glares from other customers. The clerk wasn't exactly cheerful, either.

Pretty soon, when I want veal I'll probably have to pull up to a corner in a bad neighborhood, give some guy with a cell phone my order and my cash, then drive across the street to take delivery.

And Michigan has extremely strict laws governing veal production, ensuring humane treatment. Around here, calves get treated as well as lamb - yet there's piles of lamb on the shelves.

Oh, well. Maybe I'll start making my own stock in the bathtub.

Exactly, and it would be a nightmare for small businesses (and large) that make large numbers of "small" purchases in the $600-$2000 range, or multiple purchases from small suppliers. As an accountant, my worst case scenario involves a few clients who are in the gold and silver business. Imagine trying to track the information for a small business that writes over 2000 checks a month, mostly in the $500 range. Hell, imagine just trying to GET the Social Security number and address from those selling to you.

Services are one thing; I don't mind the effort involved to create 1099-MISCs for the unincorporated service providers of my clients. But if you think I'm going to take (or have) the time or my clients will pay for my time to create thousands of them, you're way off.

This is a classic example of imposing regulations on businesses, especially small ones, without thinking of the burden it creates.
