Kenyan polygamist with 100 wives dies
Nairobi, Kenya (CNN) -- A notorious Kenyan polygamist known for marrying 100 wives died this week after a short illness, the nation's state media reported. The lanky man -- nicknamed "Danger" because of his charm and ability to woo women -- had nearly 160 children, according to the Kenya Broadcasting Corp.
Ancentus "Danger" Akuku was in his 90s.
His family was so large, he built a church and a school for them in the western town of Kisumu, KBC said.
Akuku admitted the size of his extended family made it impossible to keep track of them.
The nonagenarian credited traditional food and vegetables for his longevity and zeal for life, state media reported.
He collapsed at his home after high blood pressure complications and was pronounced dead at a local hospital, his son said.
Akuku married his first wife in 1939 and his last wife in 1992.
He also divorced as many as 30 wives, state media said.
Polygamy was a norm in the East African nation during Akuku's time.
While the practice was popular among his generation, it has slowly died out over the years.
Women have acquired more equality in the country, and most vow they would never marry a polygamist.
"I don't care whether he is a king or a president," said Janet Otieno, 25, who lives in Nairobi. "Those days are gone with our grandfathers, women are no longer as powerless as they were back then."
Anastasia Wanjiru echoes Otieno's sentiment.
"All those wives lived together? There would be no peace in my household," Wanjiru, 28, said. "That's not normal. That's madness."
Madness indeed!

The candidate that mailed me 3 fliers focused on creating jobs on one and stopping illegal immigration on the other 2. You know how certain special interests rate candidates by number?
Proposal-Maybe we need a sanity scale. Maybe a candidate like Florina or Brown rates a 1 or 2 "Sensible". At the other end at 7 or 8 we have Sarah Palin. At the far end of this logarithmic scale we have Angle and O'Donnell, loony as can be.
We can include the sanity number in with the rating by the rest of the special interests. I happen to have a special interest in the sanity of whomever I vote.

Delays to Tax Tables May Dent Paychecks
Lack of congressional action on 2011 income taxes may force the Treasury Department to make unprecedented moves to prevent U.S. workers from seeing large tax increases in their January paychecks.
The issue: 2011 tax-withholding tables. Treasury officials usually release the tables, which determine the take-home pay of millions of wage-earners, by mid-November because it takes payroll processors weeks to adjust their systems before Jan. 1.
But congressional leaders recently postponed voting on taxes until after the election and lawmakers don't reconvene until Nov. 15. The Senate is scheduled to take up several nontax issues when it returns and is expected to leave for Thanksgiving soon after, possibly pushing a vote on taxes into December.
"Things get very dicey after the first of December" because of employers' need to know the 2011 rates, said Michael Graetz of Columbia University Law School, a former Treasury official.
Lawmakers' recent track record on dealing with tax matters doesn't inspire confidence that they will act with dispatch. Congress has yet to resolve the estate tax, which expired at the end of last year and is set to snap back to high rates come January. Nor has it tackled the alternative minimum tax for 2010, a levy that is set to hit 32 million taxpayers this year, compared with five million last year.
Excellent! Thanks Congress! You all are doing a fantastic job in Washington!

In Indiana you can register as R/D/or I. When you go to vote in the primary you have to declare either R or D. If you declare as an independent then you get a ballot without the major seats and you get one with things like the school board. I get inundated every election cycle with candidates or their reps showing up on my door. I wonder if I would get fewer visits if I were registered as an R or D?

One of the benefits on being a real independent is I don't really care which party is in power or if the candidates are crazy or not. I also don't have to defend policies that I know suck ass. I get to vote based on which party is screwing up more at the present moment.
My local rep is a good man and I trust that he'll vote to do what is best for our district even if I don't necessarily agree with him. I've voted for him every election since 2001 and he'll get my vote again this year. His opponent is pouring money into ads so he's going to need as much help as he can get.

Federal subpoenas issued in John Edwards investigation
The ABC11 Eyewitness News I-Team has learned federal prosecutors in Raleigh have issued a new round of subpoenas in their investigation of former NC Senator John Edwards.A law enforcement source told the I-Team Wednesday that about 20 new subpoenas have been issued ordering people to testify about the arrangement to conceal the affair and the baby John Edwards had with his mistress, Rielle Hunter.
A federal grand jury in Raleigh has been investigating Edwards, a former North Carolina senator and 2004 Democratic candidate for vice president, for more than a year. They've been focused on the possible mis-use of campaign contributions.

Panel: Gov't blocked scientists on spill estimate
The Obama administration blocked efforts by government scientists to tell the public just how bad the Gulf oil spill could become and committed other missteps that raised questions about its competence and candor during the crisis, according to a commission appointed by the president to investigate the disaster.
In documents released Wednesday, the national oil spill commission's staff describes "not an incidental public relations problem" by the White House in the wake of the April 20 accident.
Among other things, the report says, the administration made erroneous early estimates of the spill's size, and President Barack Obama's senior energy adviser went on national TV and mischaracterized a government analysis by saying it showed most of the oil was "gone." The analysis actually said it could still be there.
"By initially underestimating the amount of oil flow and then, at the end of the summer, appearing to underestimate the amount of oil remaining in the Gulf, the federal government created the impression that it was either not fully competent to handle the spill or not fully candid with the American people about the scope of the problem," the report says.
Let's see how they try to blame Pres George W Bush for this incompetence.

Israeli planes hit 'terror targets' in response to rocket fire
Israel's air force struck "two terror targets" in northern Gaza overnight in response to recent rocket fire into the Jewish state from the Palestinian territory, Israel Defense Forces said Thursday.
There was no word on casualties and no immediate response from Palestinian officials.
The Israeli military said more than 160 rockets and mortars have been fired at Israel this year, and more than 440 rockets were fired from Gaza into Israel since the end of Operation Cast Lead -- Israel's three-week offensive in Gaza that began in late December 2008.
The IDF says it holds Hamas, the Palestinian movement that runs Gaza, "solely responsible for any terrorist activity emanating from the Gaza Strip."
Rockets are fired from Gaza into Israel and the IDF fight back. CNN has to label that as 'terror targets' as though there is a question of who fired those rockets.

I'm not real happy with parts of Obama's response to the oil spill (the moratorium, which is still ongoing, along with an undeclared moratorium on shallow water drilling since no permits are being issued).
BUT - there truly is conflicting information about how much is left out there, AND there was a lot of conflicting information about the scope of the spill as it was happening. For one thing, it started small, and as the flowing oil caused sand to blast at the leaking area of pipe, it eroded the pipe and the leak got bigger and bigger, and it ended up being larger than anyone anticipated. I saw this report earlier today, and was a bit perplexed by the panel's take on it.

Louisiana has what we call "open" primaries.
In the primary election, all candidates, regardless of party affiliation, are on the ballot. And everybody gets to vote. Sometimes the election is settled during the primary. Other times, there's a run-off, and it may be that there are two Dems in the run-off, or two R's, rather than one of each.

Prince Harry executed by Taliban in controversial film
A dramatised documentary based on what would happen if Prince Harry, fourth in line to the British throne, was to be taken prisoner while serving in Afghanistan has caused an uproar, with the Queen reportedly upset with the depiction.
The 90-minute film 'Taking Of Prince Harry' includes scenes showing the prince, played by actor Sebastian Reid, being held behind enemy lines while negotiations are carried out to free him.
The film shows the prince, the son of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, being subjected to a mock execution, with an unloaded gun pointed at his face before one of his captors pulls the trigger, reported Daily Mail online.
The depiction has not gone down well with the Armed forces and the Queen and Prince Charles too are upset by the programme, said the newspaper.

Former New York Comptroller Alan Hevesi will plead guilty to a felony charge tied to New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo’s probe of corruption at the state’s pension fund during 2003-2006, a person familiar with the case said.
Hevesi is to be arraigned in a Manhattan courtroom this morning, said the person, who declined to be identified because the proceedings haven’t yet taken place. The judge overseeing the arraignment is Melissa Jackson.
Hevesi resigned as comptroller after pleading guilty to a felony in December 2006 for using state employees to chauffeur around his disabled wife, ending his 35-year career in politics.
Hevesi, a Democrat, was sole trustee of the fund from 2003 to 2006, the official responsible for investing its money. He allegedly allowed his political consultant, Henry “Hank” Morris, to corrupt the investment process to benefit money managers who made campaign contributions and politically connected placement agents who received lucrative fees.

I wonder if it's the same moonbats who made the George Bush assassination movie that made this new one?
The film with the Bush assassination was a British production, I believe, and the assassination was just the opening scene to drive the plot of the movie (like the generic dead girl at the start of every CSI show). The movie, as far as I understand (I haven't seen it) is about the after-effect of an assassination.
By your own link above, the Taliban produced the Prince Harry film.

Lots of NY political news at the moment.
You've got Paladino making a mystery announcement this afternoon. No one has a clue as to what he's going to say - not even folks close to his campaign.
A media report indicates that Cuomo, the Democratic party candidate, got campaign donations from none other than David Koch, the right wing funder (who also happens to be a major contributor to NYC area institutions including major hospitals and museums). Other reports show that Cuomo still considers Vito Lopez (a Democrat under investigation for corruption) a good friend.
Politics makes for strange bedfellows.
Oh, and the MTA just announced major fare increases for those using Metrocards to help close the budget gap due to lower real estate tax revenues and lower funding from the state (which is broke).

Meh...actually read the article...it's a British film...not produced by the Taliban. Which makes sense, as I've never heard of a Taliban production company.

I'd say it sucks to be Lou Dobbs right now, but I imagine the xenophobics will find all sorts of justifications and excuses for him to employ illegal immigrants.
I hear the people on the right complain about the elites and that somehow the left are full of people who think they're better than the average person. And then I see all the people on the right who claim to be just like the average guy, engaging in behaviors that would get a normal person drummed out of town. Or doing things that they feel are immoral, illegal, or just plain wrong, and then acting like somehow the rules and demands they make on the rest of us don't apply to them. Oh no, they're too important for that. The real elites aren't on the left anymore. The real elites are the heads of of the conservative movements. The same conservative movement that makes such big noises about being just like you and me; all the while when they think no one is looking, doing the very things they demagogue and spit on.
And you know, personally, I don't care that Dobbs did employ illegals, and am a pretty big proponent of a more open immigration policy. I figure if we let more people in legally, but have a rigorous vetting program, it'll actually reduce stress on the open borders. How you ask? Because at that point the number people crossing illegally for jobs will drop, which means that our INS and LEO can have more confidence that the people who *do* cross illegally are in fact drug smugglers or engaged in some other illegal activity.
I don't care that Dobbs did it, I care that he's tried his best to spread hate and fear about illegals. That he' spent years using them as a whipping boy to drum up a frenzy, and then he did it. That's really shitty behavior.

Hmmm... the headline reads that Solar Power Is Coming to the White House at CNN.
It notes that the Obama Administration will be installing solar panels and a solar hot water heater at the historic home for the First Family.
Of course, the headline would be more accurate if it said Solar Power Returns to White House because a solar system was first installed during the Carter Admin, but then removed during the Reagan Admin.
But even that is inaccurate because a solar system was installed by G.W. Bush for powering the pool and an ancillary building on the grounds.
The article notes all this, but the headline and lede is what many people will read and focus on - not the article itself.
So, the most accurate headline would read:
Solar Power Reliance Increases at White House.

Loveland mayor calls for calm after attack on controversial Jesus art
LOVELAND — The mayor of Loveland is calling for calm following the destruction of a controversial piece of artwork in the city's museum.
Witnesses say 56-year-old Kathleen Folden of Kalispell, Mont. used a crowbar Wednesday to smash a display case containing a print that critics say portrays Jesus engaged in a sex act. The Loveland Reporter-Herald says she allegedly tore out a foot-long section of the print and ripped it into shreds.
She was arrested on a charge of criminal mischief.
Mayor Cecil Gutierrez said the community has always been able to talk about issues in a calm way and he wants that to continue.
Ed Armijo, a deacon at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church who has been picketing the museum, said the attack was "despicable."

O'Donnell complains of 'character assassination'
Newark, Delaware (CNN) -- Delaware Republican Senate candidate Christine O'Donnell is asking voters to give her a second look. At a candidate forum sponsored by a group of local Republicans, O'Donnell blamed her campaign's recent troubles on unfair coverage in the "liberal media.""I've put my name on the line. And I've taken a lot of hits ... a lot of character assassination," O'Donnell said.
A local GOP leader moderated Wednesday night's tightly controlled event, asking the candidate her positions on taxes, spending and the new health care law. O'Donnell did take a few questions from the audience. But she left the forum via a back door and did not stop for interviews with reporters.
O'Donnell has made fewer public appearances since her stunning Tea Party-backed win in the Republican primary three weeks ago. But just days after her victory, HBO comedian Bill Maher unearthed an embarrassing video clip of O'Donnell admitting she had once "dabbled in witchcraft."

Believe it or not there was a controversy over this sculpture entitled "Triangle" in Loveland, Colorado in 2006:
Image: 20060803_024533_cd03loveland.jpg
Example of stupidity:
Little Love in Colorado Town for Another Nude Sculpture
Among the residents who have been angered rather than uplifted by ''Triangle'' is the Rev. Kevin Klug, the pastor of Abiding Love Lutheran Church. The congregation plans to build a new church for its 160 members on the east side of Loveland, just west of the grassy plot in the middle of a traffic circle where ''Triangle'' was installed on Friday.
Mr. Klug said he worried about what to say to his two children, ages 10 and 12, if they asked about the symbolism of ''Triangle.''
''It's more graphic than it needed to be and inappropriate regardless of whether our church was going in there or not,'' he said. ''If you put it on a public street -- if that's the way you've got to go to take your kids to drop them off at the recreation park or if you're going to the high school or coming to our church -- you don't have a choice as to whether you go by it or not.''
Some two dozen residents unsuccessfully petitioned the City Council recently to postpone the placement of ''Triangle,'' which joins about 280 other pieces of artwork in Loveland, including 102 sculptures in Benson Park. Six of the park's sculptures are nudes, and there is another nude sculpture downtown.

Sculpture controversy embroils council
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. So, is morality in the heart of the beholder — or in the hands of city officials?
Controversy over too much bronze skin landed that moral debate in the laps of Loveland City Council members Tuesday night. .....
Apparently this controversy has not died down. They are still battling it out there.
Loveland Arts Commission Chair Resigns
Group Fights For Move Of Nude Sculpture
The head of the Loveland Arts Commission stepped down last week as the city council considers a plan to give the city council members more oversight of the arts commission. The proposal comes amid controversy about a piece of art called 'Triangle.'
The work shows two nude people holding up a third naked person. It is placed in the middle of a roundabout on the east side of Loveland near Corvus Dr. and Sculptor Dr.
"I believe there is a minority of people that are bound and determined that whatever method, whatever is necessary, they're going to have this thing, not moved, but removed," Jim Baldwin, the former chair of the arts commission said. .....

Believe it or not there was a controversy over this sculpture entitled "Triangle" in Loveland, Colorado in 2006:
Image: 20060803_024533_cd03loveland.jpg
Example of stupidity:
Mr. Klug said he worried about what to say to his two children, ages 10 and 12, if they asked about the symbolism of ''Triangle.''
I guess if a nude is involved then it is always about sex...dirty stinky sex...sexsexsex....
I'd suggest Mr. Klug find some place else to build his church since the sculpture was there first.

Playboy Indonesia's editor ready for jail
The former editor-in-chief of Playboy Indonesia is ready to begin his two-year jail sentence for publishing pictures of scantily clothed women, his lawyer said Thursday.
The Supreme Court said in August that it had found Erwin Arnada guilty of violating the predominantly Muslim nation's indecency laws, overruling an earlier aquittal. He was sentenced to two years behind bars.
Though Arnada has denied wrongdoing, he will comply with the verdict while launching a final appeal, said his lawyer, Ina Rahman. The former editor planned to turn himself in to the Jakarta Penitentiary Center later Thursday.

I guess some people can't handle it. I did a few art history courses in Uni and in one class we were looking at classical sculpture. (greek, roman etc). One girls dropped out because she couldn't handle all of the 'pornography'. She even filed a complaint which of course went nowhere.

Kind of hard to believe that we have people around that are still living in the Dark Ages. The sculpture looks a lot like a classical work of art.
I was rather surprised that a gallery in Loveland had decided to display the art work that's creating such a big ruckus with the archaic thumpers of late. Guess that's over with now that Kathleen Folden went ahead and damaged the art piece. To be honest I'm glad she's from Montana and not Colorado. We already have enough wingers giving our state a bad name.

Pea shooting champion threatened with fine over phallic garden hedge
Green-fingered Ian Ashmeade, 53, snipped a bush on his driveway into the offending shape in 2002 as a laugh after he noticed the shrub had started to grow that way on its own.
But a police officer visited his home last week and threatened him with an £80 fine for a public order offence if he did not ”modify” the topiary.

Jury receives synagogue bomb plot case
The trial of a New York man charged with planning to bomb a synagogue and Jewish community center now is in the hands of a jury.
Prosecutors said James Cromitie and three other men -- David Williams, Onta Williams and Laguerre Payen -- conspired to blow up the Riverdale Temple and Riverdale Jewish Community Center in Riverdale, N.Y, as well as planned to launch surface-to-air missiles at a U.S. National Guard facility in New York, CNN reported Wednesday. The four Newburgh, N.Y., men were arrested in May 2009.
The panel was to begin deliberating Wednesday after spending six weeks listening to testimony and undercover tapes made by Shahed Hussain, an FBI informant. On the tapes, Cromitie could be heard telling Hussain, "I am a soldier in America but not for America," and discussing needing a fatwa, or decree, from an imam.
Goodbye assholes. I hope the jury sentences these guys quickly.

re: #99 bloodstar
They're ALL engaged in at least one illegal activity: border crossing without permission. This is not a triviality. The United States, like every other nation, has a perfect right to limit who may live here. People wishing to come and live in our country are not entitled to do so just because that's what they want.
Some prospective immigrants have a lot to offer. When they do get in, they win and we win. Other prospective immigrants have less to offer. At some point, the balance tips into negative territory. We have our own poor, who must find work in the low-skill sector of the economy or turn to public assistance. What can be the point of making these, our own poor, face ever stiffer competition for those jobs?
Mixed in among immigrants who just want a job [and at that, a job that some of our own people could use] are those with other motives and with a dangerous skill set. The larger the flow of relatively innocent, but unhelpful, illegal immigrants, the more difficult it becomes to detect and capture the truly dangerous ones.
We are a desirable destination. We are in a position to pick and choose who we admit. Why not put however much it takes into border enforcement, and admit, instead of illegal immigrants who may or may not bring us any real benefit, legal immigrants whose skill set fits our needs?

Little-Noticed Bill Could Make It Harder To Challenge Foreclosures
[Link: www.huffingtonpost.com...]
Challenging foreclosures could become more difficult for homeowners if the president signs a bill that passed through the Senate last week. The little-noticed bill comes at a time when the validity of foreclosure proceedings across the nation has been called into question. The House passed the bill in April, and its brisk journey through the Senate has drawn scant attention, Reuters reports. If signed into law, it would require courts to accept certain documents that have been notarized out of state, streamlining foreclosure proceedings and stripping homeowners of one legal method of challenging a foreclosure. The legislation would come just as a foreclosure validity crisis is mounting: GMAC, JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America have admitted to not properly reviewing some of their foreclosure documents.
This is basically another bank bailout bill. Whoever voted for this POS needs to lose their seats.

So is every art controversy involving alleged blasphemy going to lead back to prior reactions by a select segment of the world Muslim population? It's a matter of focus really. The opposition in question here is not Muslims but Christian who are protesting the artwork in Loveland, Colorado. Thinking about the Mohamed controversies is just a distraction. In the end, blasphemy is protected under the 1st Amendment regardless of religion -- that is the main point. We should be focusing on the freedom.

You've made a well thought out post on Immigration, but there are a couple of things that are significant that need to be pointed out.
first, entering the country illegally and overstaying a visa are both civil torts. As such are not prosecuted via the legal system. and are instead handled in a totally different manner.
Second, generally people who come to the US are going to be the best, the brightest and the most determined people. I'm sorry, but the stereotyping of lazy immigrants coming here to suck on the Teat of government welfare is a very bad one. I mean, think about it, you're willing to travel literally thousands of miles, risk robbery and death from exposure or other maladies both man made and environmental. And come to try to scratch out a living. Do you think that someone who isn't willing to work their ass off would put that much effort into getting to the US.
And in general we're on the same page. I'm not disagreeing that we need to restrict illegal immigration. I'm saying if we want to restrict it more, we need to expand our immigration program so the best and the brightest and the hardest working people do have a chance to come to the US.
That's a win win, because not only do you have the best coming over, you have people who feel welcome in the US, and you reduce the workload on the border patrols and increase the odds that they'll be able to track drug smugglers or other people trying to enter the US to cause mischief and harm.
:)

What amazes me is the fact that more folks have been kicked out by this administration then past ones AND they are spending more money at the borders BUT the GOPTeatard party is STILL refuses to admit that Obama is doing anything about illegal immigration.
