Related art: Carl Warner's Foodscapes

British photographer Carl Warner creates amazing foodscapes: landscapes constructed entirely from fruits and vegetables, cheeses, breads, fish, meat and grains. At first glance the landscapes look real, and it is only on second glance that the viewer realises that the scenes are made entirely out of food. A book of his work, entitled Carl Warner's Food Landscapes, is published by Abrams and is available at all good book stores and via Amazon

I still don't have much interest in current affairs, to be honest, but after a little while i realized how much i missed all of the good people here. I knew it was only a matter of time!

I've been working part time for the last year and a half but at my full billing rate, it ends up being pretty good. I've been paying debt down like crazy and focusing on getting my cash flow to the point that I could be unemployed with no money coming in at all and we'd still be okay. I need to find some kind of web concept I can put on line and just sit back and let the money come in, but I'm not willing to go into porn, so I'm not sure that's a winning plan as of yet.

Yeah, no one diagnosed us, did they? We were just the kids who had trouble paying attention and planning ahead...although i finally got myself some light medication a little time ago and that also made a big difference.

We haven't yet figured out whether our son can cope without medication, but i'm a whole lot more sanguine about including it in the list of options after having experienced such good results myself.

You have the makings of a "romantic comedy" screenplay at your fingertips. Write down every interaction, conversation, and random thought you have. The dumber, the better. If you finish it, there's a small but non-zero chance that someone will pay you a significant sum of money for the rights to it, and then turn it into a movie that approximately 34 people will see. But you'll have, like, $15,000 you didn't have before, and that's the important thing.

I finally discovered Wellbutrin 10 years ago or so and that helped a lot, though I ended up adding an anti anxiety to it later. Mostly it was figuring out that I'm better at figuring out how to do something than deciding what the best thing to do is. More of a tactical than strategic kind of guy. I don't see drug companies as being the enemy but it seems to me that if we're going to bring down medical costs, doctors need to start with the cheapest, most effective drug available and then work up from there instead of prescribing "free" samples and locking the patient into a $300 a month habit after the samples run out.

Some people have a malfunctioning pancreas, and have to take insulin. Some people have a malfunctioning thyroid gland and have to take Synthroid. Still others have a wonky heart and have to take things like Norvasc or Procardia. There's no social stigma attached to malfunctions in those organs, but as soon as we start talking about the brain, the social game changes. Weird, eh?

No, but cancer, in my opinion, is a much different category than hypertension, excess stomach acid, or any of the other ailments that usually fall prey to that sort of thing. Been there myself. Got prescribed Benicar because the doc had free samples, except that I could have gotten away with a much less expensive generic and not had to pay out the arse when the free sample supply ran dry. Not to mention Benicar had the unfortunate side effect of increasing the number of floaters I had in my eyes so I'm dealing with that now too.

I blame both. The drug companies for pushing new drugs directly to the ignorant public and the doctors for allowing their patients to self-prescribe or for being too lazy to take a more cost effective approach.

Actually, the sales that got me there were mostly in July August, and this month. September was a very slow month but the start of the new fiscal year let me get 5 delegate seats sold in five business days. That was enough to get me over the sales mark needed for the promotion. It does not give me any supervisory role, its just gives me a raise and benefits.

I also blame myself for just taking the doctor's word for it and not saying, "Hey wait a minute, is this the best option?" He's learned from there that I don't take samples anymore just because they're free. I want to know if that's the most cost effective option.

Patients, and doctors both have to be more conscientious.

So, been to the Zionist Conspiracy Meeting. All is well. We have a new member. She is an unabashed, unapologetic DEFENDER of Pamela Geller and thinks that Islam is really a political ideology hell bent on defeating Western Civilization.

I had intended to attend a talk in San Francisco tonight, about the proper way to conduct oneself when defending and promoting Israel on "the street." I was traveling in a vehicle in which myself and the driver were the only ones who support the construction of the Islamic community center. The driver is one of the original founders of our Zionist group and kept out of the discussion, which really was an attack on yours truly, for having the audacity to defend the construction at Park 51.

FOR THE RECORD, I would like to thank Charles and his many posts about Ms Geller and the controversy regarding Park 51, because I used the information from the posts to defend why I thought Ms Geller to be prejudiced and not in tune with reality. After being accused of not being on the right side of things (from a self-described leftist Zionist no less), I excused myself from the carpool and walked home when another fellow steering committee member was picked up in a nearby neighborhood.

And life goes on.

Some notes on the eye issues here:

In 1993 R. G. Walton et al reported that they had been compelled to halt a study of aspartame use by people with a history of depression because two participants suffered severe eye problems while the study was underway. One patient suffered a subconjunctival hemorrhage for the first time in her life while another required emergency surgery for a detached retina. The depressed patients also suffered other less severe symptoms.

The NutraSweet company says too few people participated in the Walton study to permit any conclusions to be drawn. Only 13 people were tested. Eight had a history of depression while a control group of five did not. In addition, one of the eye problems showed up while the subject was taking a placebo (an inactive substance) rather than aspartame.[Link: www.straightdope.com...]

I think there's a serious danger in this situation. If Beck becomes seriously ill his followers are going to think it's part of a secret plot. There's a lot of potential for ugliness if something happens to Beck.

His followers might think that. In the past, he's kept them updated when he is ill. He should stick to that policy. That way the facts are known and no one jumps to conclusions. This is one issue where Beck's history works in favor of sanity.

Weird, eh?

Absolutely weird.

And if anyone still wonders why I'm supporting Bill Brady for Governor of Illinois this year, read the Chicago Tribune's endorsement of him:

For governor, Brady

What a spectacular opportunity! With the inept Rod Blagojevich defrocked and awaiting a felony trial, Pat Quinn had two years to reverse the Illinois death spiral: Two years to defang corruption and clout, to reform wild spending and borrowing, to make Illinois tax policy a magnet for jobs. Two years to rescue his beloved state — and to humble the critics who for decades had dismissed him as a gadfly.

Now, nearly two squandered years later, what a disappointment. With history lying in his hands and a populace yearning for him to succeed, Gov. Quinn has proved to the 12.9 million citizens of Illinois that … he is a nice man who cannot do this job. Strength, constancy, innovation, iconoclasm, the courage to speak truth to power — by each of these leadership metrics, Quinn stands bent and pale.

Quinn's bungled tryout — he continues to rule by appeasement even as Illinois and its bright promise unravel — has become the key issue in this race. Democrat Quinn does not grow in office, nor does he compel his party and labor allies to accept solutions that crimp their own influence. For those reasons and others we'll explore, the Tribune today endorses state Sen. Bill Brady for governor.

We know that reviving this moribund state is a challenge greater than any Brady, a Bloomington homebuilder and Republican, has surmounted. By the most important measure of the next few years, though, Brady is the candidate for the job: We believe he will say No to the power-clutching elites — House Speaker Michael Madigan, Senate President John Cullerton, that means you and your cronies — whose insider politics doomed this state to its own private tailspin.

Well, Quinn clearly can't do what is needed. Brady is not corrupt and not the machine's thrall, and that's enough for me. Even if there is some risk in picking him, the certain failure of Quinn makes the risk worth taking.

I once heard a story about a group of late-teenage kids who, in the late 1980s, all ingested some LSD and then happened to watch Schoolhouse Rock:

According to the legend, the part where the guy recites, "three six nine twelve fifteen eighteen" etc., etc., was perceived by the group to be not merely a recitation of a certain segment of the multiplication table, but was in fact a declarative sentence conveying profound secret knowledge about Life, the Universe, and Everything that probably seemed incomprehensible later, but at the time was both figuratively and literally The Bee's Knees.

That's just what I've heard.

New York gubernatorial candidate criticizes gays

New York (CNN) -- New York Republican gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino criticized gays Sunday, saying he didn't want children "to be brainwashed into thinking that homosexuality is an equally valid or successful option," compared to heterosexuality.

"It isn't," Paladino said at a stop in Brooklyn, New York.

A prepared version of his remarks obtained by CNN from New York affiliate NY1 said that "There is nothing to be proud of in being a dysfunctional homosexual," though Paladino did not wind up delivering that line.

"That's not how (God) created us," the prepared remarks continued, though Paladino did not say those words.

Paladino distributed copies of his prepared remarks to reporters at the event, an address to a group of Orthodox Jews in Brooklyn's Williamsburg neighborhood.

The candidate's remarks came a day after New York police announced the arrest of an eighth suspect in a series of brutal, anti-gay hate crimes against four men.

So I'm much happier as a contractor where nobody is asking me to do anything other than solve their problem.

I just switched to Wellbutrin, and I'm having a side effect (perhaps) of a slight bit of dizziness when I get up in the morning, stand up after sitting for more than an hour, etc. And it's done nothing thus far for my generalized feeling of loathing for 95% of the people I meet (Lizards being among the other 5%). Sad News:

The Angel of the Isles: British aid worker blown up in Afghanistan by suicide vest in aborted rescue mission by U.S. special forces

A British aid worker captured by the Taliban in Afghanistan was killed in an explosion as US Special Forces launched a dramatic pre-dawn rescue mission early yesterday.

Linda Norgrove, 36, died from serious injuries suffered in the blast – almost certainly caused by a suicide vest held near her by one of her captors.

Last night a source revealed Miss Norgrove – who grew up in a simple croft in the Western Isles of Scotland before dedicating herself to rebuilding Afghanistan – had been held for a fortnight in a remote family compound where a number of women and children were also living.

But by the time 150 US Special Forces troops had fought through Taliban small arms fire for 30 minutes and stormed the compound, Miss Norgrove had been 'mortally wounded'.

It is believed she was still alive when the soldiers reached her, but they were unable to save her life. At least seven militants were killed in the firefight. The rest fled into the darkness.

A source said: 'Miss Norgrove was killed by an explosion, probably caused by a suicide vest, held by one of the attackers.' The source said there was 'nothing about her injuries that suggested Allied forces caused her death'.

I hope the spoldey-dope is finding Hell hot enough for him right now.

Good for you. Keep on standing up for your principles, especially when others are bamboozled by people who have none.

Now you see why I volunteer to drive when people are carpooling. I'm not afraid to ditch a-holes when they are loony in MY car.

This kid shot .22 through up through light loaded .45 pistols today. He wanted to try them all. Between his Dads collection and my humble array he got to try six different pistols.
That smile will stay with me as long as I live.

I hope you taught him to do EVERYTHING connected with guns "by the book". "This is no game, if you mess up with guns you die...or someone else dies, which is worse."

Give it time and stay in touch with your MD.

I assume that MD was a psychiatrist.

No, this was my GP, whose office is a little over a mile from my place and less than a quarter mile from where my office was until less than three years ago. I do taxes for his parents, his father's medical corporation, and his two brothers, but not him, and his family has known my boss' family for over 50 years. I trust him.

I'm jumpy, edgy, easily provoked, and all that.

Tell me some good news about this drug. Please.

If Wellbutrin works for you, then it's great. If not, then it's terrible.

I'm more than willing to discuss my experiences via email (negativ at gmail dot com) if you feel the need.

Yes he got that lesson, utterly. But in a less sharp way, as best for the youngster. In fact Mike Dalton, my mentor & a protege of Jeff Cooper always has this low key but memorable correction style. This guy helped create tactical pistol as a modern fighting art, without the drill sergeant style. All the more impressive as a low key effective instructional style.

Cool beanz. I look forward to the day I can be at the range with my son and hand him my Model 64 and his mom's Colt Targetsman. I think that will light up his day as well.
