Hoffman’s photo was posted on White’s Overthrow.com site next to his address, telephone number and other personal information, including his sexual orientation. White’s posting called him a “gay, Jewish anti-racist.” Hoffman, a former associate dean at Northwestern University, was never directly threatened with physical violence, but he told The Sun-Times in Chicago he had received ominous telephone calls afterward asking about his association with the Hale trial. He also got text messages that read, “sodomize Obama” and “cremate jews [sic].”

Legal Standard for “True Threats.” (4th Circuit Court of Appeals, amicus) Counsel: Gabriel Walters and Rebecca Glenberg for the affiliate.
William White, a white supremacist, was convicted by a jury in federal court of making threats against various people. The judge set aside some, but not all, of the convictions on First Amendment grounds. White argued, among other things, that he could not be convicted of making threats unless there was proof that he had intended his statements to be threatening. The judge disagreed, holding that the government need only show that the statements would be understood as threatening by a reasonable listener. White appealed. On October 4, 2010, we filed an amicus brief arguing that the First Amendment prohibits punishment of threats unless the defendant intended his statements to be threatening.

re: #79 Gus 802
Here’s one applicable part of the brief:
Virginia v. Black discussed the concept of true threats in the context of a Virginia statute criminalizing cross-burning with intent to intimidate. The Supreme Court struck down a provision of the statute stating that the act of crossburning would constitute prima facie evidence of an intent to threaten. Id. at 367.
The Court defined “true threats” as “those statements where the speaker means to communicate a serious expression of an intent to commit an act of unlawful
violence to a particular individual or group of individuals.” Id. at 359. The plain
meaning of this passage is that a speaker must specifically intend to threaten for his words to constitute true threats and thus fall outside First Amendment protection.
Thus, for example, in Magleby, 420 at 1139, the court stated that true
threats, “[u]nprotected by the Constitution[,] … must be made ‘with the intent of placing the victim in fear of bodily harm or death.’ An intent to threaten is
enough; the further intent to carry out the threat is unnecessary.” (quoting Black, 538 U.S. at 359-60).

having a gun and a dog is not about making sure no one will fuck with you. life happens. it’s for what you do when someone fucks with you. if you live in a rural area ( wild animals, police far away) or dangerous area (police close but may not be coming anytime soon), possibly not physically strong, a defender of you and yours… what would you suggest for protection from intruders, predators, wild animals and the like? if you are not a convicted felon or mentally ill, a gun and a dog might help you out in a pinch.

Pretty much anybody can handle a .30 carbine M1. It was designed to replace the Colt 1911 pistol and I can fire mine one-handed. Load up with round nose softpoints and add on a M4 bayonet and you’re ready to deal with most threats except for very large aggressive animals like brown bears, moose, or elk.

re: #79 Gus 802
In these cases, this Court applied an objective test and upheld the
defendants’ convictions under that standard. However, even under the subjective
standard, these defendants could have been convicted. In these cases, “any attempt
by the defendant to explain the intent of his communication as non-threatening
would most likely be laughable and unbelievable. Only in cases at the proverbial
margin, where the line between protected idea and punishable threat is more thinly sliced, will the application of the specific intent to threaten standard potentially
lead to a different outcome than if an objective test were applied.” Crane, 92 Va.
L. Rev. at 1274. “In those close-call situations, however, it is much better to let the ‘crafty criminal’ go free than to imprison the innocent speaker whose words
unintentionally seemed threatening to a ‘reasonable person.’ Otherwise, speech, especially at the fringe, will be unnecessarily chilled.” Id. at 1276.
One of the interesting features of that brief: They have a lot of examples of threats clearly meant to be threats, but a representative example of a ‘close-call’ situation, where protected free speech might be wrongfully punished, is missing.

Really? I didn’t know that. Kind of makes sense though since the carbine sacrifices range and power to maximize capacity and ease of use.

Papyrus makes me twitch now too. It’s not that it’s an awful font, it’s just way overused (and misused). I used to adore Zapfino, but its misuse has sucked all the joy out of that one too.

You should see Mike Lacher’s I’m Comic Sans rant:
When people need to kick back, have fun, and party, I will be there, unlike your pathetic fonts. While Gotham is at the science fair, I’m banging the prom queen behind the woodshop. While Avenir is practicing the clarinet, I’m shredding “Reign In Blood” on my double-necked Stratocaster. While Univers is refilling his allergy prescriptions, I’m racing my tricked-out, nitrous-laden Honda Civic against Tokyo gangsters who’ll kill me if I don’t cross the finish line first.

It’s interesting to learn just how many of us far-left libtards (or whatever) are armed. I guess the difference is the emotional need to advertise that fact.
It is mostly because we get laid regularly and don’t see guns as penis extensions. Teabags generally… well… c’mon, how much more of their overcompensations do you need to see?

Yeah, it’s effective range is small enough that hitting a human-sized target in the head is easy, while you don’t really need all that much power with a headshot. Semi-auto fire means being able to dispatch multiple targets quickly, while firing from a box magazine reduces reload time.

There are certainly worse bands than ABBA out there but I have to admit I winced when McCain said Dancing Queen was his favorite song of all time. I mean come on John. At least you guys who came of age in the 70’s didn’t have to deal with stuff like NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys. That was torture.

What does this mean in actual terms, like rainfall? -4 means no rain for months, while -20 means no rain for years? I want to turn the numbers into something the average person could relate to…

I don’t know of anyone around here who grows them. I suppose since the coastal areas are frost free that they could be grown, but I’ve never known anyone since I’ve lived here in San Diego (nearly all my adult life) who grows them.
Loquats OTOH are used commonly throughout SD as a landscape plant.
I just wished that local citrus growers would try growing some of the better Japanese varieties of mandarin orange hybrids. My favorite in Japan (and still my favorite fruit, though I’ve tasted any in 4 years), is the variety called “Shirame” - gustatory heaven it is.

A whole bunch of things go into it. There is a rather complicated formula that is designed to give a dimensionless number. The issue with dimensionless numbers is that you really need to have the formula in front of you and play with it in your head to see what the number means.
So an image like this is really a bunch of meaningless colors without the math.
Therefore… you need to look at this:

Overcompensation is a bit more complicated, but let me put some perceptive on the plate, using the Palestinians (a failed society/culture) as an example.
On the one hand, they claim to be poor, noble and righteous abused victims- and in the same breath, they admit to wanting to unleash all kinds evil and viciousness on everyone but those responsible for their plight (as in looking in the mirror).
The same applies to the stalkers. They must admit to being perpetual victims seeking justice and at the same time, they wish to abuse and mete out punishment. The fan club!
I don’t talk about the fan club much, but that’s what they are.
it’s sorta like pro-wrestling, but in reverse, they’ve created a narrative of anger in their heads, and that’s important to them, so they watch every post, obsess over every poster. Some of those guys are pretty bright, really bright! Isn’t there a guy writing software just to track comments here? Pretty dedicated and impressive in a bizarro sense. but smart people get addicted to opiates and distracted by things of little consequence. Smart people…well, we all ain’t as smart as we thinks we is.
Much like how people live vicariously through rock stars or sports figures, and get worked up to the point of screaming over a baseball game.
We’re their pro wrestling, we’re their sports contest. because they have all this emotional investment over the place that kicked them out. They’re still all 9/11 Never Forget Get The Muslims War Of Civilizations, they came to LGf because they were those people. And then LGF moved on. They stayed the same, because they’re tribalist conservatives and 9/11 fetishists and LGF became an unambiguously hostile environment to them, their comraderie was disintegrating. They claim ownership over a thing which never belonged to them. it’s a Blog. it’s not your home. Not mine. it’s a guy’s blog, andf we’re all guests.
Every seen guys who are fans of a band, then the band changes direction and the fans get furious, because they believe they’re owed a specific kind of music from the band? because they were LOYAL dammit, and you gotta play the music we got into you for!
Anyway, that’s those guys. And they’re not unusual. This schism thing, it’s always happening, every day. I’ve been on dozens of different online communities, since the 80’s. GEnie, Prodigy, Compuserve, pro8Star in seattle, Atari ST boards, C64 warez boards. I ran a blog from about 2002 on, for years. Had many many flamewars. And I’ve seen this happen a dozen times. A hundred times.
Schisms are easy on the internet. It’s impersonal! Nobody sees you. They happen constantly, people choose sides, they make weak-ass threats, they spy on each other, they get fired up, they goad each other on, they do little weak-sauce hacking attempts, they pull their dicks in anticipation of the next big event or the next bon mot that stokes their anger.
They actually act a lot like I used to, when I was part of one of these schisms. I was just as mad at the other Group, I had my friends, we had our enclave, we sniped, we bitched, we acted like kids.
And then i moved on, because getting into dumbass pissing matches and setting up ramparts and making some anonymous internet community your HATED ENEMY? Well, guys! That is not going to make you money, or get you a career, or make you happy, or increase your skills, or your knowledge, or anything. it’s like having a penpal you hate, but spend your life writing to.
If you spent your emotional energy bitching about a blogger who kicked you off his site, and spying on his commenters, and claiming they’re not really Jews or you want to kick the ass of someone you’ve never met, and wouldn’t know if they were standing next to you? you’re wasting your energy. That’s all it is. Waste.
And that’s probably the last thing I’ll say about those dudes for a while. I know their type. I used to be that type. I won’t lie, I peek over there. And one of the reasons I peek over there every so often is because I’m fascinated by how much some of them sounded like me and my friends , many years ago, from BBSes to twitter to facebook. I got out, and I’m a lot happier. No more usenet wars. No more wordpress skirmishes. No more BBS screaming matches. Instead of angrily spying on my enemies, I play guitar or draw pictures instead. Much more satisfying.
And that’s all I got to say. :)

“This week Glenn Beck has taken to his radio show to attack me as a progressive, which he has said is the same as a ‘cancer’ and a ‘Nazi,’” Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor whose own battles with his weight are well known, wrote on his HuckPAC website. “What did I do that apparently caused him to link me to a fatal disease and a form of government that murdered millions of innocent Jews?
“I had the audacity — not of hope — but the audacity to give respect to the efforts of first lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move campaign to address childhood obesity,” Huckabee fumed. “I’m no fan of her husband’s policies for sure, but I have appreciated her efforts that Beck misrepresented — either out of ignorance or out of a deliberate attempt to distort them to create yet another ‘boogey man’ hiding in the closet that he and only he can see.

Shocker! Liberal Propogandists To Release “Socialist Bible”
in a move to promote their socialist share-the-wealth agenda, liberals are secretly preparing a version of the new testament that portrays jesus as highly sympathetic to society’s underclass, praising the poor and powerless, and providing assistance to the disabled. in a nod to their allies the IRS, the socialist bible even has jesus making friends with a tax collector! Also, showing a bent toward topical issues, the subversive bible attempts to gin up sympathy for european style socialist medicine by portraying jesus as healing the sick for free
but the most shocking part of this travesty comes when the mask is ripped off the liberal agenda to reveal the communist revolutionary underneath - jesus is actually made to promote class warfare and violent revolution, saying “the last shall be first” and “the meek shall inherit the earth”
we must insure that our vulnerable school children are never, ever, exposed to a portrayal of jesus acting and speaking in this un-american way!

Sorry dude. I know more about the way people behave in online communities than you. I ran them. I have run a blog that used to get 100 comments a thread, just like Charles. Built my own graphics for it and everything. had memes, had everything. Had a bit of a culture! That blog got over a thousand comments in a thread in…2004? 2005? When i was depe into my I Wanna Be A Blogger phase. From a fight! A thousand comments in 8 hours!
I’ve been on online communities for over 20 years. Pushing 25, since I got a modem for my Atari as a christmas present from my parents, and figured out through many sleeplessnights of calling every BBS in the back of ComputerUser magazine in Seattle, found all the smart people were hiding on a board called Cave Creek BBS in Seattle. Since it was a novelty. This is my expertise. This is how I make my living. I am part of online communities, I’m an artist that knows these people, and that’s how I make a middle class living. of this ALONE, I make my living. No day job. Just this.
I wouldn’t question you on science. That’s your expertise. This is mine. OH how this is mine.
I won’t engage in any matches with you (and really, i got a LOT of freelance to do, so I’m gonna take off) but I am more firm in my opinion about this than you can possibly understand. You have no dea how wrapped up in internet horseshit I used to be. I’m embarrased to talk about how wrapped up in it I was. it was stupid. Like being an alcoholic. I’ve lived it for so long it’s in my DNA. The patterns are *identical* They’re so similar that it’s like I’m seeing time go in reverse.
And now I’m gone, because my spidey sense senses a storm coming, later folks

In some ways I agree with both WUB and Researchok. It does feel a little ridiculous to compare internet trolls and stalkers to people actively engaged in violence. But the other side to this is that I feel that most bad behavior by humans is the result of common forces such as hatred, greed, obsession, delusion, fantasy, ignorance, boredom etc. That most negative behaviors could be compared as simply relative amounts of these factors.
I don’t agree that untreated pathology always gets worse though, that’s not how it works. Most pathological organisms have evolved to not kill their host.
Rather they try to feed off the host as much as possible while keeping them alive and healthy enough so they can continue to do so over an extended period of time.
I do have some experience in the mental health business.
While I cannot speak to pathological organisms, I can speak to human psycho-pathologies. As a rule, left untreated, psycho-pathologies do escalate until the individual is rendered ‘broken’.

And by the way, like the Palestinians, the stalkers believe in the sanctity and righteousness of their ‘cause’.
Yes, but the Palestinians at least have an actual problem, regardless of how accurate their perception may be of what it is and whose responsibility it is.
The stalkers don’t have a problem. They don’t have a cause. They are dedicating alarming amounts of time to being annoyed by a blogger who cut off their posting privileges.

But isn’t that an argument for it getting worse? I know next to nothing about this from an academic standpoint, but it’s an obsession and sometimes untreated obsessions can spiral out of control.
The M.E. conflict analogy? I’d go for an obsession before that. I mean, Research made a statement “All they have to do is walk away and ignore the source of their discomfort, but they can’t. They escalate their pathologies all by themselves.” As to Israel, they supply food, water and fuel to the territories so neither side can simply “walk away.” The disgruntled fans, yea, if they get tired enough or distracted enough, or at least acknowledge the whole negative energy output.

But it really is the same thing on a number of deep levels. Much of the problems are self inflicted.
I mean consider a guy like Chen, 30 something, caught spanking regularly by his mom who jokes about it, has a dead end job and no existence to talk about meaningfully. He has to imagine himself a superhero and stuff.
Well, that and the fact that the stalkers really hate Muslims and being compared to Palestinians is a brilliant burn.

Good stuff.
That said, the Palestinians receive more aid per capita than just about anyone on the planet and have for decades. Corruption is the reason for Palestinian poverty and dependence.
They have chosen to be dependent and they have chosen to be victims.

The President has had to put up with the nonsense for a long time:
“After lunch, the group took a walk, with Barry running ahead. A flock of Indonesian children began lobbing rocks in his direction. They ducked behind a wall and shouted racial epithets. He seemed unfazed, dancing around as though playing dodge ball “with unseen players,” Bryant said. Ann did not react. Assuming she must not have understood the words, Bryant offered to intervene. “No, he’s O.K.,” Ann said. “He’s used to it.”
“We were floored that she’d bring a half-black child to Indonesia, knowing the disrespect they have for blacks,” Bryant said. At the same time, she admired Ann for teaching her boy to be fearless. A child in Indonesia needed to be raised that way — for self-preservation, Bryant decided. Ann also seemed to be teaching Barry respect. He had all the politeness that Indonesian children displayed toward their parents. He seemed to be learning Indonesian ways.”

That will make things easier of the besieged Berbers. They are up in a strip of mountains. Supplies can now come through, while Qaddafi loyalists doing the siege continue to be attacked, whether from air or ground.
I’m rather impressed with their action. They basically bum rushed this town, which is about 32 miles by road, 19 by straight line. Tunisia is now holding the 113 troops forced to flee over the border, combine that with any killed in the fighting, and that is a serious loss, considering how the Armed Forces fractured.
Bravo to the Berbers!

His mother seems like she was a wonderful woman. I always thought judging by the photos that she was an attractive young woman too. It would, but it would require more source data to deconvolve the number to get the figures you want. I honestly don’t have the drought input data on hand. It is something you can get on the web however.
I found what I was looking for! Or at the very least something close:
Drought Severity Classification
Exceptional Drought: -5.0 or less
Exceptional and widespread crop/pasture losses; shortages of water in reservoirs, streams, and wells creating water emergencies

I do have some experience in the mental health business.
While I cannot speak to pathological organisms, I can speak to human psycho-pathologies. As a rule, left untreated, psycho-pathologies do escalate until the individual is rendered ‘broken’.
I have a family member working as a psychiatrist at the VA, and I have mild social anxiety disorder myself. It seems we both have some experience in this regard.
Left untreated I stayed about the same, it never progressed to all out agoraphobia or anything. Of course that isn’t always the case, but I’m simply saying that pathologies can progress in many ways.

I was banned from LGF once. I was kind of pissed off about it too. So I took… maybe a week as a breather? Re-read what I had posted, and sent Charles an apology via email. I also had a particularly rough month once and attempted to flounce. Again, Charles showed a pretty darn good aptitude for people.
As you can see, I’m still here. What’s my point? Well, two points… You really gotta go out of your way to seriously get and stay on Charles’s bad side. Guy is pretty much as chill as the music he posts. The other point is to echo what other people here have said, the inclination to stalk a forum for YEARS after getting banned is seriously abnormal. At this point I think the best case is its a hobby that gives them some warped sense of community, but I suspect I’m being way too generous.

Bill White is the reason I own a Mossberg.
Very nice. My father is getting a shotgun this spring. He was a gun owner when he and my mother first got married, but got rid of the revolver he owned when I was a small child (this was back in the early 80’s, before modern gun safes). But since the Supreme Court mandated the change to Chicago’s gun laws, he’s decided to purchase a shotgun and he took the required class today.

Just to be clear- Every scenario is different because people are different.
Further, one man’s obsession may be another’s mild curiosity..
That said, the principles of understanding and addressing psycho pathologies remains the same for every scenario. There are degrees of scale but in the end, the pathologies are the same.
They may manifest differently but in the end, they are the same.

Think of it this way: Long before a kid commits an act of terror or straps on a suicide belt, there is an underlying pathology that is developed and nurturd by a group or is left to fester and grow on it’s own (remember Travis Bickle in Taxi?)
These dysfunctional types start somewhere and left untreated, we see the possible results.

Chris is absolutely correct. The Republicans are nuts. Unfortunately, the Democratic party has in great measure become the party of Michael Moore.
Fahrenheit 9/11 enthusiastically endorsed by:
Bill Clinton (“everyone should see it) , Mario Cuomo (actually tried to get the “R” rating reduced so kids could see it), Terry McAuliffe (said he believed in the conspiracies that Michael Moore presented as to Bush’s motives for war), Jimmy Carter “favorite movie (along with Casablanca)”. Oh, Moore and his films have been endorsed by one more notable: Rachel Maddow (check Maddow’s transcripts and teasers for interviews with Moore—she actually believes he is a source of wisdom. )
Imagine you are an Arab and you see Fahrenheit (it was a big hit in the Arab world). If Michael Moore is correct, what is the right thing to do when you see those American servicemen and women coming towards you? I have to admit I get emotional on this subject. I have many former students who have served in Iraq—-one female student part of the bomb detail. It bugs me (even though I can’t stand Bush) when people make films which encourage foreigners to shoot them.
America is in trouble. The Democrats listen to the Daily Kos and the Republicans listen to the birthers. What a minute, I mean the Republicans ARE the birthers.
