‘Family Values’ Hypocrite John Ensign Resigns

Pure sleaze
Politics • Views: 29,941

Nevada Republican Senator John Ensign announced today that he’s resigning, putting an end to the career of one of the sleaziest, most despicable GOP hypocrites to ever hold office, a man who built his political capital by preaching “family values” and “defending traditional marriage.”

The real reason why Ensign is resigning: to stop the ethics investigation against him. He didn’t want any more of his crappy behavior to come out.

In June 2009 Ensign publicly admitted that he had an affair with Cynthia Hampton, who was his political treasurer and was married to Doug Hampton, Ensign’s administrative assistant. The Ensign and Hampton families lived in the same neighborhood outside Las Vegas and were considered the best of friends.

In 2008, when the affair became known to the other spouses, Ensign dismissed both Hamptons from his political and legislative payroll. Ensign’s parents, wealthy casino magnates, paid the Hampton family $96,000 in what was labeled gift income for tax purposes, the precise amount legally permissible without triggering taxes.

In addition, Doug Hampton returned to Las Vegas and began working as a lobbyist for a consulting firm run by Ensign’s top political advisers. Doug Hampton has alleged that Ensign helped him line up his first few lobbying clients — all donors to Ensign’s political committees — and that the senator helped arrange meetings for Doug Hampton with Obama administration officials.

What a corrupt creep. Good riddance.

UPDATE at 4/22/11 2:04:37 pm

Unfortunately for Ensign, the ethics committee is still going to finish their investigation.

If he had been a Democrat, the family values crowd would be using this as proof that liberals are immoral decedents. Ensign’s just another hypocrite who talked about family values while bonking his mistress.

Marriage is the cornerstone on which our society was founded. For those who say that the Constitution is so sacred that we cannot or should not adopt the Federal Marriage Amendment, I would simply point out that marriage, and the sanctity of that institution, predates the American Constitution and the founding of our nation. - Sen. John Ensign (R-NV) 2004

Hampton Scandal: Ensign had an extramarital affair with Cynthia Hampton, who was married to one of his top aides, and who worked for Ensign for Senate, and for Battle Born PAC, a conservative political action committee, of which Ensign was the honorary chairman. At the time of the affair, Cynthia Hampton’s husband, Douglas Hampton, was a top administrative aide in Ensign’s Capitol Hill office, and Ensign and his wife had been close friends with the Hamptons before they were hired to work for Ensign. When the affair came to light in 2009, an Ensign spokesperson asserted that it had occurred between December 2007 and August 2008, but Doug Hampton said that it began at Christmas 2006…

It’s not the adultery I’ve ever had a problem with so much as the lying about it, especially from those who cloak themselves in the “family values” BS. Yep. That’s a large part of it. Gingrich gets to claim “I’m forgiven in the eyes of the lord” and continue to pretend to be a moral authority. To them, adultery is temporary and once they cease to engage in adultery they can ask for forgiveness and claim providence and salvation. But also to them they see homosexuality as permanent and the only option for them is to cease being gay. Until that time comes they will be considered “sinners” by the likes of the Republican Party at large. You see, Ensign is no longer committing adultery so he’s in the clear in the eyes of the Sky Hook.

43 Sionainn  Thu, Apr 21, 2011 5:50:14pm

I guess I don’t know what a moral is, I just know that leaving 2 wives while they are still severely ill is repulsive and I would not want to have anything to do with a person like that.

I am not so bothered by Vitter because the only thing he did was pay for sex and that is the end to that.

Ensign broke up a family, betrayed a friend, then got his family to pay for it. Which makes him the worst of the 3 in my eyes.

And apparently the moral right are either just ignoring these things or have forgiven them, what leads me to this conclusion either I don’t know what a “moral” is or the “Moral Right” doesn’t.

Create a PageThis is the LGF Pages posting bookmarklet. To use it, drag this button to your browser's bookmark bar, and title it 'LGF Pages' (or whatever you like). Then browse to a site you want to post, select some text on the page to use for a quote, click the bookmarklet, and the Pages posting window will appear with the title, text, and any embedded video or audio files already filled in, ready to go.
Or... you can just click this button to open the Pages posting window right away.
