Todd Rundgren and Daryl Hall: Sweet

They won’t admit they need to be rescued
Music • Views: 48,088

Here’s a near-perfect version of one of my very favorite songs by Todd Rundgren, with Daryl Hall singing counterpoint and a terrific band: “Sweet,” from Todd’s criminally overlooked album Liars.

Youtube Video

I’ve been living with a lie for so long now, baby
I gotta set my soul free, I can’t take it no more
That’s why I gotta
Sing, shout it, tell the world about it
The truth is sweet

I made a promise to myself not to let nobody else
Have any sway on the way I lived my life
I didn’t see the need to compromise but now I’ve come to realize
That living is more than just surviving
And I’ve been lying to myself, I gotta cover up what I feel
But now it’s time I must admit this is real, this is real

The truth is sweet
Just like honey from a bee
The truth is sweet

So many people in the world let it all pass them by
They won’t admit they need to be rescued from their lonely lives
That’s why we gotta
Sing, shout it, tell the world about it
The truth is sweet

When you’ve been hurt so many times it’s enough to make you blind
To anything that looks like true happiness
Nobody wants to be the foolish one but after all is said and done
You constantly settle for less
It’s like a broken carousel
It just goes round and round and round
But now it’s time you admit
You’ve lost ground
Hear that sound?

The truth is sweet
Just like a baby’s kiss
The truth is sweet

Go on admit it
You know you want it to be true
Go on admit it
You say you don’t but you know you do
Go on admit it
You’ve been disguising what you feel
You could be living in a fantasy
But then that fantasy could turn out to be real
So real, so real

Sweet and true like my love for you

And everybody in the world’s
Gonna wake up some day
Singing love is the answer
Love is the answer
What’s left to say?

That’s why I
Sing, shout it, tell the world about it
The truth is sweet

Filling out applications for two art stores near a community college walking distance from my place.

Yes, they are filled with hipsters. I should get hazard pay.

Tom "T-bone" Wolk is the guy sitting between Runt and Darryl Hall. Was an amazing bass player. Was Hall & Oates bass player for years. Later played on Saturday Night Live with GE Smith (H&O's lead guitarist.)

Died last year.

I saw them in concert once, and he did a thirty measure or so bass solo. Blew me away.

Thought y'all would like to know.

Every time I see Wolk; I think of the brilliant, yet unsung heroes of music. They guys who make the front guys look good. Most of the guys who musically blow the front-men away.

Jimmy Buffet was on 60 Minutes once, commented on how ridiculous it was that he was the arbiter of who was worthy to play with his band. He understood that musically; he's not even in their league.

There was an elderly man who wanted to make his younger wife pregnant. So, he went to the doctor to have a sperm count done. The doctor told him to take a specimen cup home, fill it, and bring it back the next day.

The elderly man came back the next day and the specimen cup was empty and the lid was on it. Doctor: What was the problem? Elderly man: Well, you I tried with my right hand...nothing. So, I tried with my left hand...nothing. My wife tried with her right hand...nothing. Her left hand...nothing. Her mouth...nothing. Then my wife's friend tried. Right hand, left hand, mouth....still nothing.

Doctor: Wait a minute. You mean your wife's friend too?!

Elderly man: Yeah, and we still couldn't get the lid off of the specimen cup.

A beautiful woman walks into a doctors office and the doctor is bowled over by how stunningly awesome she is. All his professionalism goes right out the window...

He tells her to take her pants off, she does, and he starts rubbing her thighs.

"Do you know what I am doing?" asks the doctor?

"Yes, checking for abnormalities." she replies.

He tells her to take off her shirt and bra, she takes them off. The doctor begins rubbing her breasts and asks, "Do you know what I am doing now?", she replies, "Yes, checking for cancer."

Finally, he tells her to take off her panties, lays her on the table, gets on top of her and starts having sex with her. He says to her, "Do you know what I am doing now?"

She replies, "Yes, getting herpes - that's why I'm here!"

If you took a poll you would find out that the majority of humans believe more in unprovable bullshit than they do in provable science. This is corollary, in large part, with economic status and education. Since the majority are less educated and poor they have a tendency towards superstitions and the supernatural. UFO belief tends to be a phenomenon found in more technologically advanced countries. It also tends to attract people with mental health issues.

It's almost the same as rounding up women for not wearing a burka. As far as the robbery scenario -- i.e. what if they go into a store to rob them analogy -- WTF does that have to do with anything. Anyone that wants to hold up a store isn't going to think about mask laws. They'll just walk into the store, pull out their gun, and hold up the place.

"NO SHIT SHERLOCK" would have worked quite well.

I was to worn out to be witty today. The companies had better get on the stick and start getting those fuses in. What's the point to have electricity but your AC in down. At least we know what to do and don't have to wait for an electrician or AC guy. Their so backed up that would be about 2 days for them to make it in. We would have to close. Right at the time we are having record sales. It sucks.

If I wanted to walk around the street with a moose head covering my head that really should be my right. As long as I'm not hurting anyone. If that practice leads to putting my own life in danger I should be free to take that risk if so desired. I don't have that right if I walk into a private area like a store. If the storekeeper says "no moose head masks" then it his right since I am in his private space. Going back though. Where do we draw the line? What about wearing a fake beard, make-up, transvestites, etc? Those practices themselves are a form of masking and can rather easily infringe on so called law enforcement concerns. So even if they do ban burkas it won't prevent people from altering their appearances in order to easily engage in criminal activity. The only reason left would be a ban for cultural or integration reasons.

If you are wearing a moose head in an intersection, I'll try to run over you. "Hey that moose guy wasn't watching where he was going."

The Moose - Woody Allen

I shot a moose, once. I was hunting up-state New York, and I shot a moose, and I strap him on to the fender of my car, and I'm driving home along the west side highway, but what I didn't realize was, that the bullet did not penetrate the moose. It just creased the scalp, knocking him unconscious. And I'm driving through the Holland tunnel - the moose woke up. So I'm driving with a live moose on my fender. The moose is signaling for a turn, y'know. There's a law in New York state against driving with a conscious moose on your fender, tuesday, thursday and saturday. And I'm very panicky, and then it hits me: some friends of mine is having a costume party. I'll go, I'll take the moose, I'll ditch him at the party. It wouldn't be my responsibillity.

So I drive up to the party and I knock on the door. The moose is next to me. My host comes to the door. I say "Hello. You know the Solomons". We enter. The moose mingles. Did very well. Scored. Two guys were trying to sell him insurance for an hour and a half. Twelve o'clock comes - they give out prices for the best costume of the night. First price goes to the Burcowiches, a maried couple dressed as a moose. The moose comes in second. The moose is furious. He and the Burcowiches lock antlers in the living room. They knock each other unconscious. Now, I figured, is my chance. I grab the moose, strap him onto my fender, and shoot back to the roads, but - I got the Burcowiches. So I'm driving along with two jewish people on my fender, and there's a law in New York State ... tuesdays, thursdays and especially saturday.

The following morning the Burcowiches wake up in the woods, in a moose suit. Mr. Burcowich is shot, stuffed and mounted - at the New York Athletic Club, and the joke is on them, because it's restricted.

I think I might have spent $120 for a pair of really good field boots once, but other than that, I don't think I've ever spent more than $40 on a pair of shoes ever.

I wish, there are many, many cute shoes out there. I inherited hard to fit feet. Better than my parents tho. Mom is a 4A and Dad was an A.

Even at the old lady and specialty work shoe stores, it is hard to find narrows --everyone seems to have wide feet.

I've lived a long life... both have to work at making each other happy. Buying $600 moccasins would be a one sided selfish pleasure, with no good outcome.

We spent extra on a motherboard for one of our computers because it was my husband's motherboard.

He wanted it, and it made me proud to have his motherboard in the computer. Also, it was the one the kids and I use, and made it lightning fast.

Maybe, but they taste better than lawn.

A man and a woman started to have sex in the middle of a dark forest. After about 15 minutes of it, the man finally gets up and says, "Damn, I wish I had a flashlight!". The woman says, "Me too, you've been eating grass for the past ten minutes!"

Them, noticing that I'm not very tall nor very big: "Really? 4E? Really?"

The husband being shocked, replied, "How's this possible? You've been married three times before."

The wife responds, "Well, my first husband was a gynecologist and all he wanted to do was look at it. My second husband was a psychiatrist and all he wanted to do was talk about it. Finally, my third husband was a stamp collector and all he wanted to do was...oh, how I miss him!"

I hated those days. Probably why I get what I want when I feel I need it, now. My parents were misers too!

Took my Mom to Nordstrom to buy shoes this year --she will spend money on shoes because she's always had to to get them to fit.

Huge shoe department, they had exactly 3 pairs that were her size. 2 fit the way she liked and she didn't like either pair.

Finally she settled on the New Balance, we ordered them and she kept them.

This whole process took weeks. I called around to all the specialty stores-NOTHING in her size.

The idea behind those was originally about how running bare-footed was much better for the overall health and muscular/tendon development of your feet, with your toes acting independently to stabilize your body as they had evolved to do.

But for obvious reasons, running bare foot in urban environments is impractical, so... Toe Shoes.

Arizona tried to pass an anti-paraphernalia law some years ago. it was overturned. You just can't go into a shop and ask them to sell you a hash pipe: you have to ask for a pipe to smoke little teeny-weeny chunks of tobacco in...

What was she arrested for this time?

On 15 December 2010 the General Prosecutor's Office instituted a criminal case against Tymoshenko on the fact of the misuse of funds received by Ukraine within the framework of the Kyoto Protocol, she was officially charged on 20 December 2010.[195][196][197][198] Tymoshenko denied the money had been spent on pensions and insisted it was still at the disposal of the environment ministry and called the investigation against her a witch-hunt.[196]

She is also accused of agreeing to the Russian "expensive" price demands for gas. The irony here is that Yanukovych-Azarov's govt is supposed to be pro-Russian, and vice-versa, Yushchenko-Tymoshenko were supposed to be "Russophobes".

There isn't a ton that can be done with manufacturing other than promoting cutting-edge stuff, since automation is the reason we've lost jobs in manufacturing. I mean, assuming we don't want to go back to 1900 levels of workplace safety and wages.

The main industrialized base is huge, larger than it ever has been. But it produces very few jobs because the largest parts of it, the most stable and well-founded, are so heavily automated.

There's a ton of room for growth in alternative energy manufacturing, and carbon nanotube stuff, that would produce jobs.

I do like the idea of the tax forgiveness for offshored money based on jobs created; i.e. for every job created by the corporation they get to bring back X dollars. Last time we let them bring back money they just gave it out as disbursements, which didn't really help.

US Debt isn't bad news. US debt-- or rather, how willing people are to borrow US bonds-- shows that people have faith in the fundamental soundness of our ability to pay back that debt.

The problem there is that we're cutting spending in the middle of a recession, which is godawful stupid.

We'd need a steady stream of good news to bring things around.

Traditionally, we'll need either lower energy prices (iffy, but quite possible if the dollar goes up and the Euro goes down), some new industry innovations-- iffy, since R&D has fallen hugely in recent years as corporations focus more on stupid financial instruments than looking towards the future-- or government spending. Government spending, of course, is now being held hostage by the GOP, who are happily using gangster metaphors for themselves now.

I'd still have to try hard on being comforted by seeing positive numbers on system that doesn't work. I realize this might be a radical concept for some people. So when we're back in positive numbers sure it will be "better" but the struggle for the working and middle class will continue and will only worsen as we continue along using a system that only benefits the top 2 percent of American citizens.

There was a time when industrialists, business executives, used to love the particular industry that they were in. When industry was proud about creating jobs for Americans. Made in the USA was a point of pride. Now, we've reached a point where these same industrialists and executive have gotten lazy -- like the rest of us -- and want an easy route to fast riches. Everyone of them wants to be J Paul Getty and everyone of them has a bloated ego that doesn't fit the reality of their shortcomings.

Many of them grew up thinking that "greed is good" when in fact it is not if it destroys a nation as we are seeing today. In the end. American corporations don't want to produce as much as they want to create wealth from wealth or wealth through the manipulation of financial regulations and money products. If they do want to produce and employ people then the tendency is to outsource to 3rd world countries or China.

You're entirely right. Many large companies these days spend more time fiddling with financial instruments than concentrating on their core industry, since that's what's most profitable. In addition, health care costs, through insurance, make up such a large part of their costs that they spend tons of time and money figuring out how to minimize those-- also a distraction from the actual business.

In a well-regulated market, this would make those companies inefficient, but in the actual market we have, where financial instruments are highly unregulated and health care is a byzantine system that rewards economy of scale, it's exactly backwards.

BENGHAZI: Libya's rebel forces said Muammar Gaddafi's youngest son, Khamis, and more than 30 others were killed in a NATO strike on an operations centre in the western town of Zliten.

Citing spies operating among Colonel Gaddafi's ranks, Mohammed Zawawi, a spokesman for revolutionary militia groups, said Khamis was among the dead.

''Overnight there was an aircraft attack by NATO on the Gaddafi operations room in Zliten, and there are around 32 Gaddafi troops killed. One of them is Khamis,'' Mr Zawawi, a spokesman for the United Revolutionary Forces said.

A lot of this is socialization as I alluded to before. It is the socialization and normalization of Gordon Gekko mentality. Many of them went into business school not because they loved business or industry but instead to make money. This is almost the same thing that happened with medical doctors. Television and the movie industry played a large part in this socialization. Americans are highly influenced by the mass media and they become our role models. They are not even numbers people.

re: #525 Gus 802

A lot of people in medicine are there because they honestly want to help out (while making money), but even there they get disillusioned very fast, both by the experience of med school, and the experience of the practice of medicine in real life.

One recent graduate, friend of my wife's, who's a straightforward primary care doctor, says that he basically has the option of making a modest income by doing primarily medicare, or making a highly variable income by engaging with private insurance, hiring someone to deal solely with making those claims, paying close attention to compensation schemes among the different plans, and doing at least some gaming of the system.

The reason why doctors still do medicare, despite all the fear-mongering, is because it's a quite dependable source of income. People on private insurance aren't nearly as dependable, and it takes a lot of resources on the doctors part to actually chase that money down.

But of course, single-payer would be a terribly inefficient government bureaucracy whargble.

There's a mix. People who genuinely want to help the world but also people who really just wanted to be retired brain surgeons. I'm not really sure it has anything to do with single-payer or even Universal Healthcare. The exact same thing happens in Canada. Its highly variable depending on which province you're in, what if any specialities you have, and what if any elective procedures you can perform.

Update on Jose Guerena:

No arrests 3 months after killing by SWAT
[Link: azstarnet.com...]

No arrests have been made in the three months since Jose Guerena was killed by a SWAT team during a raid of his home that officials said was part of a complex drug-trafficking investigation involving numerous people.
....
Guerena, 26, did not fire his rifle and died inside his home, reports show. His wife, Vanessa, and their 4-year-old son were inside the house during the raid. Neither was wounded.

A short video released weeks after Guerena's death shows deputies approaching his home turned on their sirens for a few seconds as they approached. It also shows them announcing themselves, then knocking down the front door and firing their guns from outside.

The five officers involved have been cleared of wrongdoing by the Pima County Attorney's Office. Dupnik said no changes have been made to the policy and procedures of how SWAT operates.

Only one guy who had nothing illegal in his home died...why make changes?

They won't make changes because the victims isn't a member of the local "church and country club" establishment. Had he been a "successful" member of society, then perhaps changes would be made. And of course there is the fact that the victim's name is Jose Guerena which is another part of the reason. However, the reasons are based largely on the economic status of the victim.

Oh, I wasn't really tying the motivation and the 'get money' parts together. Sorry, that was a rather confused post on my part.

Your part about the specialties is exactly right; the one sort of doctor NOT to become if you want to be wealthy is a primary care doctor.

The US has a big deficit of primary care doctors and we have wait times for them that exceed the single-payer nations.

re: #528 RogueOne

Why should they change anything? They were cleared of wrongdoing. There's no penalty for them. I doubt there's even any compensation for the killing available in a civil suit.

They have zero incentive to change their policy, especially if they've fooled themselves into thinking tactics like that 'work'.

What is the actual objective of the drug war, anyway? I've never really understood.

Then again, people of high economic status are never under the watchful eye and scrutiny of law enforcement. Cops don't drive around rich neighborhoods looking to bust people for open containers. Cops don't stand in front of the local upscale restaurant looking for potential DUI arrests. They'll stand and wait in front of the local taqueria.

I'm not sure if this is entirely relevant to the US but...

Canada also has wait times that exceed most other single payer nations, and its due to our large rural population. Its really, really hard to convince people to be the small town or village doctor. The either prefer an urban lifestyle, or they prefer to be part of a larger healthcare system, not simply flying solo. That's ignoring any financial constraints.

I was arrested for being stupid back in Junior high. Cop asked me for some ID. Being under 16, all I had was my school ID. Seeing that I was from a private school, he decided not to press charges and let my folks deal with it, "since I seemed like a good kid". Probably didn't hurt that I was as respectful as I could possibly manage.

I've always appreciated what he did for me, but at the same time I know that if my ID was an inner city school nearby and I was black, probably wouldn't have worked out that way.

591 NJDhockeyfan  Fri, Aug 5, 2011 8:33:21am

Meanwhile this is much uglier...Assad is still killing his people...

Syrians 'slaughtered like sheep'

YRIA deteriorated further into violence yesterday, with a resident of the worst-hit city Hama saying people were being "slaughtered like sheep".

The intensifying violence in Hama and other Syrian cities prompted the US and Russia to warn that the chaos must end.

In the strongest US statement since the uprising began in March, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said President Bashar al-Assad had "lost his legitimacy to govern".

Announcing a toughening of sanctions against Syria, she said the Assad regime was responsible for the deaths of more than 2000 people during the uprising.

Mrs Clinton said "the incredible tragedy" unfolding on the streets was "numbing".

"The shooting death of a one-year-old boy by the Syrian regime's tanks and troops is a very stark example of what is going on," she said.

..."People are being slaughtered like sheep while walking in the street," a man told news agency Associated Press. "I saw with my own eyes one young boy on a motorcycle who was carrying vegetables being run over by a tank."

Another resident was quoted as saying people were being forced to bury their dead in their gardens or roadside pits "because we fear that if we go to the cemetery we will end up buried along with them".

Residents reported plain-clothes men, believed to be working with soldiers, wandering the streets shooting randomly.

Images of men throwing bodies off a bridge as they chanted "Allahu Akbar" -- "God is great" -- were posted on the internet but it was impossible to verify whether it was protesters throwing security forces or security forces throwing protesters. Other videos taken with mobile phones showed bodies lying on the streets.

Syrian tanks, soldiers and snipers have fired throughout the week on Hama, the city where up to 20,000 people were slaughtered in 1982 by the regime of Hafez al-Assad, the President's father.

The US made its strongest call yet for Mr Assad to leave office.

Fuck, that horrendous!

They won't because race bating sells at Fox Nation. Race bating sells at Fox News; with Rush Limbaugh; with Glenn Beck; etc. No amount of moral equivalency will change that. Fox Nation has no equal in this regard.

There's isn't a claim that either side is 100% pure. Nobody thinks that. Nobody ever suggests that. I don't find that a bit of perspective. I find it an attempt at false equivalence, and I call it such.

Who are you talking to, Reine? Is it some stereotype, or is it me? I'm happy to acknowledge the racism on the Democratic side, or the 'liberal' side. I've talked about it at length, about the deep racism of Boston, an entrenched liberal/Democratic city.

Last post. Stop playing the victim card. You've pissed everyone off because you've essentially accused a long time poster and a friend of mine of either a) being racist or b) supporting racists when the victim of the attack disagrees with his politics. With absolutely no evidence. That's so far beyond the line of acceptable discourse its not even funny.

611 Dark_Falcon  Fri, Aug 5, 2011 8:43:37am

Let me try to sort this out for good and for all:

The Huffington Post (HuffPo) has serious problems as a site. It's posters and commentators sometimes indulge in biased speech which runs down people they don't like unfairly. When it comes to Israel, this often spills over into outright bigotry, and on occasions its commentators will say ugly things on other issues. It is better than it was pre-2008, but it still has too many haters.

Fox Nation (FN) is much worse though. HuffPo kicked out many of its haters, while FN has actively courted its own crop of haters. They actively post headlines that play to the haters bigotry and then fail to delete openly racist comments. FN also does this more often and on a much wider range of issues than HuffPo.

Thus, while HuffPo has serious problems, those problems are not equivalent to those of FN and cannot be used to counter FN's bad actions. Just to close things out I'll use the words of Fox News star Bill O'Reilly: "You cannot excuse bad behavior by pointing to other bad behavior."

What's happened in this thread is that I point out that the liberal bent of most of the posters here these days has resulted in a lot of people getting very comfortable in their niche. And unwilling to acknowledge anything else without pulling out the "magical balance fairy" idiocy.

I also suspect that some folks here have gotten so very comfortable in the "right wing always bad, left wing always great" niche, that any suggestion that one take a hard look at anything untoward from either side is uncomfortable enough that people automatically pull out the 'magical balance fairy" card; often it's warranted, but sometimes it just isn't.

NJD can be quite aggravating.
And he was thus even before the Great Flouncing. Perhaps I'm just more accustomed to his technique and ignore it?

So, we just finished the FAA tax authorization extension debacle. Will we have a similar debacle when the gas tax authorization runs out in September?

With Congress in its current composition? Anything goes - and the effects will be just as bad. Infrastructure projects will stop, people will be furloughed, and all because Congress can't agree to extend a tax that funds 28% of road and transit projects nationwide.

Here it is. Posted about 1/2 hour ago at Fox Nation...

Obama's Hip-Hop BBQ Didn't Create Jobs - President Obama - Fox Nation

Of course Politico didn't word it this way. Fox Nations is taking Drudge like re-writing of titles to extremes. They're race bating. Big time.

Yes, but the difference is that Politico is a site that actively seeks to inform its readers about what's going on in politics, while Fox Nation has become a place where assholes and bigots go to get their freak on.

And what president doesn't celebrate his birthday? Did they expect him to sit in the White House quietly? The whole notion is absurd. It's outrageous outrage over a WH event and for the president's birthday. They've lost their freaking minds over there. It's not even a debate. Obama had his birthday bash and he invited who ever he felt like inviting. They need to get over it.

re: #643 reine.de.tout

?
I don't know because we haven't talked about it, with all the screaming at me.

I suspect you don't like that sort of ugliness anywhere you see it.
I suspect Obdi is the same.

And that's what I think.

Alright, well here's my view of what happened. People are posting racist headlines from Fox Nation. From today. These are stories officially posted by Fox Nation. Instead of saying what you did, and what many, many other posters did and say "Shit, that's some damn ugly stuff", NJD responded with "that's almost as bad as HuffPo". That's not even playing the equivalence card. That's the "other side is worse" card.

Obi simply asked NJD to produce a racist headline from HuffPo. If they're worse than Fox nation, that should be easy right? He can't do it. He posts some pretty nasty user comments from 4 months ago.

And those comments were nasty, racist and vile. You can argue that user comments that are left unmoderated are just as bad as an officially posted story, that's up to you. But I won't accept that they are worse, or that NJD wasn't trying to weasle his way out of his original comment.

So don't come crying that the left won't acknowledge its racists when the original, right wing commentor was attempting to say that the left was worse. Its not abusing the magical balance fairy card to ask for prof of accusations against a specific publication and its not wrong to point that the evidence presented doesn't support the original claim.

It also doesn't mean that myself or Obi in anyway accepted or supported those comments. It simply means that we don't believe that those comments from 4 months ago prove NJD point.

D_F said it best with his post about why the problems with FN today are not equivalent to those of HuffPo today. I won't add to what he said other then to agree with him.

I am absolutely accepting of different point of views. I accept that you and NJD come from a more traditional right wing perspective than myself and many others here. But the other side of challenging a widely held belief is that you better be willing to defend your challenge, which is not what I saw either NJD or you do.

Obi pointing that out does not make him in anyway supportive of those comments. He simply pointed out they didn't prove NJD's point. You seemed far too willing to mistake that for support, even after Obi repeately explained this to you.

You seemed far too willing to assume that other posters were overlooking their own political blind spots, rather than the fact that someone you agree with made a really, really poor argument that follows his pattern of "make outlandish claim, post evidence of left-wing hate not directly relevant to original claim, claim support for evidence when relevancy is questioned".

It was a trap that Obi stupidly stepped in. But just because it questions the left doesn't make it valid or particularly cunning. It was the same old shit we've dealt with 1000 times.

I try really really hard to be good when he's home. I can't imagine him being gone 2 weeks and coming home to a lot of anger and strife. I don't even have a honey-do list ready when he gets home; if I need something, I wait a few days 'til he gets settled and then ask if he can do this or that.
