Well Charles, we have an answer as to why they never get around to topics like climate change or evolution: Because the moderators are pushovers that allow the candidates to spend 5 minutes apiece talking about the same damned topic.

Time for the second hour minority question.

Santorum - Rubio meat.
Gingrich - Rubio for VP
Romney - I've got so much fucking lawn that needs mowing. The East Lawn will definitely be Rubio's.

He has insisted for years that government should and must control the moral nature of the people. A couple of years ago, he stated that every society in history has policed and regulated "private" sexual behavior. He is a statist that would use government coercion to enforce his own mores onto the rest of us in the name of the public good. In truth, I don't think Thomas Hobbes even goes that far.

Santorum's end-run around religious freedom just now, saying that the Constitution is protecting "God-given rights" because the Declaration of Independence contains the word "Creator."

Newt needed Romney on the ropes - Republican voters respect someone who can rip open his opponent's throat and suck his life force out without getting his shirt dirty...Newt failed to satisfy that desire.

Romney got a few punches in (though he pulled them at the end because he doesn't want to actually hurt anyone...he has people who do that for him).

I think Romney gets it just because Newt didn't rip off his legs.

re: #333 darthstar

Newt needed Romney on the ropes - Republican voters respect someone who can rip open his opponent's throat and suck his life force out without getting his shirt dirty...Newt failed to satisfy that desire.

Romney got a few punches in (though he pulled them at the end because he doesn't want to actually hurt anyone...he has people who do that for him).

I think Romney gets it just because Newt didn't rip off his legs.

Pretty much. For Newt to win, he had to put Romney down and make him stay there. Romney stayed on his feet, even if he's wobbling a bit and missing a couple teeth. Hence, TKO.

I just figured out why Republicans love Reagan so much. He's the only president they have had that they aren't ashamed of since Eisenhower. That's 50 fucking years! What are the odds that they will have a nominee in 2012 who would be a good president with that kind of record? Seriously, Democrats should run on that. Republicans do not have a good record of producing good presidents. The party that hates government ain't good at governing.

Seems like he was pretty reasonable, based on this:

"One of the most important things in life is what judge Learned Hand described as "that ever-gnawing inner doubt as to whether you're right." If you don't have that, if you think you've got an inside track to absolute truth, you become doctrinaire, humorless and intellectually constipated. The greatest crimes in history have been perpetrated by such religious and political and racial fanatics, from the persecutions of the Inquisition on down to Communist purges and Nazi genocide. The great atomic physicist Niels Bohr summed it up pretty well when he said, "Every sentence I utter must be understood not as an affirmation, but as a question." Nobody owns the truth, and dogma, whatever form it takes, is the ultimate enemy of human freedom."[Link: www.forestcouncil.org...]

Just so. Alinsky was indeed quite far to the left and he was comfortable being called a 'radical', but he was primarily concerned with getting things done, not striking poses. He got his pride from achievement, instead of looking for attention to boost his ego. But that last trait is called "maturity" and it is a trait grown rarer nowadays, as witness Paris Hilton (to bring the discuss full circle).

The problem is more longterm profit vs shortterm profit.

Our current system is kind of designed to sell out the former for the latter.

Exactly. There's plenty of opportunities up there, particularly in methods of manufacture that involve microgravity, as well as the potential for He3 mining on the Moon to support fusion energy here on Earth.

But all that is a decade or more of work before you start showing profit, something most companies these days just aren't going to put up with. Only the government is going to make it work, and you can't do that by cutting taxes.

Ayers is a stereotype. Alinsky...Alinsky is mostly a long-forgotten guy who suffered a strange resurrection thanks to the Tea Party, and is now read mostly by his political foes, in a desperate attempt to--something.

The only reason Alinsky ever got any notice is because the Tea Party are the same old farts who either were or who fought against the hippies back in the 1960's. They knew Alinsky because they heard about him 50+ years ago.

Nobody under 75 gives a damn about Saul Alinsky or even knows who he is.

Manned spaceflight has never been approached as "profitable". It has always been a national pride sort of thing.

Virgin Atlantic is hoping that the World's rich, assuming developing nations continue to develop rapidly enough, will be willing to pay for very expensive joy rides.

It's a luxury vanity product.

So was air travel in the beginning; now we take it for granted sometimes.

Even there, much of the advances were government financed in some way. Ask Boeing and Lockheed how much their commercial ventures relied upon selling military versions of their planes to the Air Corps/Air Force.

re: #414 Dark_Falcon

This.

I will not say at all that I would agree with the man on every policy position, whatever they may be. I do believe that he was a force for good on integration and getting better living and working conditions for poor and minrotiy Americans.

He challenged wealth and privilege, which is why establishment types like Gingrich loathe him.

The story on his action at Chicago O'Hare airport cracked me up.

The city was expanding the airport and contracted with unions that forbade black membership. Alinsky organized black folks to go into every bathroom in the airport (they were all pay bathrooms at the time) with a dime, a lunch and a book and lock up every stall.

The city caved in by nightfall.

That is ten kinds of awesome.

The right-wingers have latched onto the idea that Saul Alinsky (oh no, a RADICAL!) is behind the rise of the left and our evil soshulist President.

So they make big noises about what an awful demonic man he is.

And the Left (by which we mean, these days, anyone who is in opposition to the Right), who doesn't know much about him (mostly because we are not mobilized/organized in the way that the Right is) -- we go "huh, who?"

And look him, and find out that he was actually a pretty cool dude and hey, maybe we SHOULD read his book.

The Right Wing is making a lot of money in book sales for Saul's heirs.

Air travel by onsies and twosies was a hobby thing... Later, it is true, the early commercial flights depended upon the rich.

The big difference, and it is big, is the amount of energy it takes to go from A to B as one increases altitude. The gravity well of the Earth, while puny by cosmic standards, is too costly for us small organic units. It's just too big.

Yeah, but the next generation is on their way to the retirement home as well, while the younger generations like myself either never heard of Alinsky or are looking to him to help organize our own political revolutions. That's what scares the shit out of guys like Newt, that after years of his generation fighting the establishment, they've become the establishment that today's kids are fighting against.

If you ever get a chance, pick up an old copy of "Fate is the Hunter" by Ernest K. Gann. In the beginning is a long list of dual initials - that of a pilot and the airline he flew for. Everyone of them died in an airliner crash. We paid a heavy price to get to grandma's in a safe sardine can.

That's because cities the world over have laws on the books banning overflights of cities by supersonic aircraft. There's been work on eliminating sonic booms from supersonic aircraft, but no workable commercial design. The best we can manage right now is high subsonic bordering on transonic, but the fuel costs are a deal breaker.

A little late here but reading quickly about Alinsky I've come to learn that George Romney said "we should listen to him." Dick Armey of Freedomworks hands out copies of "Rules for Radicals" to all the new Tea Party leaders. William F. Buckley called him an "organizational genius." Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's senior honor thesis was on Alinsky. He was not a socialist and never joined organization. When he was asked to join the Communist Party he replied:

Not at any time. I've never joined any organization—not even the ones I've organized myself. I prize my own independence too much. And philosophically, I could never accept any rigid dogma or ideology, whether it's Christianity or Marxism. One of the most important things in life is what Judge Learned Hand described as 'that ever-gnawing inner doubt as to whether you're right.' If you don't have that, if you think you've got an inside track to absolute truth, you become doctrinaire, humorless and intellectually constipated. The greatest crimes in history have been perpetrated by such religious and political and racial fanatics, from the persecutions of the Inquisition on down to Communist purges and Nazi genocide.

I see no reason to doubt Pakistani Influence in this. They want to threaten India, so getting rid of a relatively popular government that is attempting reapproachment with India would be a goal of theirs.

What worries me more is the Saudi Influence mentioned in that Article.

Good news though-Apparently 3 nations are getting very tired of Pakistan. US cables from the leak a while back paint this picture:

According to the WikiLeaks cable, in a briefing given by Ahmad Shuja Pasha to the parliamentarians it was also told that India, UAE and Russia were involved in the insurgency in Balochistan. Pasha said India has established nine training camps along the Afghan border, where they are training members of the Baloch Liberation Army. He also claimed "India and the UAE (reportedly due to opposition to construction of the Gwadar port) were funding and arming the Baloch. Pasha also claimed that the Russian government was directly involved in funding/training/supporting the insurgency.

It's interesting because Communism and socialism was noticeably popular in the USA. Especially within populist labor movements. There's no denying that they were there -- the Communists and socialists. The enemies tried to paint them as spies and typically emphasized conspiracies about their connections to the KGB and the Kremlin.

I think that's one of the handy things about Trek vs. Wars. In Trek, after the first two seasons of Next Generation, the studio realized they weren't going to be able to do anything really interesting so long as he was at the helm, so they labeled him "executive producer" and robbed him of creative control of the franchise.

Meanwhile, Lucas is still going strong with the Clone Wars business and has hinted on more than one occasion that he's reconsidering his earlier statements not to do more movies.

True enough but Year One has the Batman that ends up in Returns. As a result, I'd say there is more of Miller in Nolan's portrayal than any other single writer.
