Paul's foreign policy proposals aren't exactly all that madcap. It's the shit he wants to do at home that turns most people's hair white.
Umm... Ron Paul is a stopped clock that happened to got it right with the Cuban question, we now have to wait twelve hours until he says another thing right.
Seriously, Paul wants the US to quit the UN, quit NATO, quit international treaties. He has declared global warming "the greatest hoax ever perpetrated." Perhaps quite absurdly - as even I cannot understand the reason - Ron Paul proposed a bill in 1999 that would see the US re-annex the Panama Canal.

Not exactly, our own intelligence community says Iran's in no rush to develop nukes. They're building the capabilities, but still a year or more away from a working bomb.
Having time is one thing, but Ron Paul is another. We've got time to work on this, but shrugging and saying "So, they'll be nuclear, who cares," is not exactly helping matters.

I still have a special place in my heart for Hippo Stomp, He Ain't No Angel, Uncle Albert, Indian Reservation, and a donated LP of Machine Head. The album had a heat warp in it, and to this day I wish I still had that album so I could listen to Smoke on the Water with that distinctive whoosh sound that came from the stylus groovin' in the grooves! What's easier, getting rich when you already have money or getting rich when you start with none? Which person deserves more respect?
The one who starts with nothing deserves more respect, but both are worthy of respect.

Headline fail: French ELLE stated that the Obamas are the first African Americans to be fashionable.
Whaaa?
They are the First Americans at the moment. First Family.
They are African Americans.
They are fashionable.
Now we know at least one of them can sing.
But somehow those were combined in an unhealthy way. Ever since African-Americans have been able to buy and choose their own clothing, I'm sure there have been fashionable ones.
French ELLE? Jesus, do they think Josephine Baker wore that banana outfit when she was OFFstage?
I don't even know what they think they're talking about. The number of reasons that is a dumb statement just begin to pile up.

“The blind trust is an age-old ruse. You give a blind trust rules. You can say to a blind trust, don't invest in properties which would be in conflict of interest or where the seller might think they're going to get an advantage from me.” Romney told the Boston Globe in 1994. "'A United States senator has an obligation to tell its blind trust what it cannot and can invest in,' Romney told the Associated Press later.

Seems like he was pretty reasonable, based on this:
"One of the most important things in life is what judge Learned Hand described as "that ever-gnawing inner doubt as to whether you're right." If you don't have that, if you think you've got an inside track to absolute truth, you become doctrinaire, humorless and intellectually constipated. The greatest crimes in history have been perpetrated by such religious and political and racial fanatics, from the persecutions of the Inquisition on down to Communist purges and Nazi genocide. The great atomic physicist Niels Bohr summed it up pretty well when he said, "Every sentence I utter must be understood not as an affirmation, but as a question." Nobody owns the truth, and dogma, whatever form it takes, is the ultimate enemy of human freedom."[Link: www.forestcouncil.org...]

Exactly. There's plenty of opportunities up there, particularly in methods of manufacture that involve microgravity, as well as the potential for He3 mining on the Moon to support fusion energy here on Earth.
But all that is a decade or more of work before you start showing profit, something most companies these days just aren't going to put up with. Only the government is going to make it work, and you can't do that by cutting taxes.

This.
I will not say at all that I would agree with the man on every policy position, whatever they may be. I do believe that he was a force for good on integration and getting better living and working conditions for poor and minrotiy Americans.
He challenged wealth and privilege, which is why establishment types like Gingrich loathe him.
The story on his action at Chicago O'Hare airport cracked me up.
The city was expanding the airport and contracted with unions that forbade black membership. Alinsky organized black folks to go into every bathroom in the airport (they were all pay bathrooms at the time) with a dime, a lunch and a book and lock up every stall.
The city caved in by nightfall.

And the Left (by which we mean, these days, anyone who is in opposition to the Right), who doesn't know much about him (mostly because we are not mobilized/organized in the way that the Right is) -- we go "huh, who?"

That's because cities the world over have laws on the books banning overflights of cities by supersonic aircraft. There's been work on eliminating sonic booms from supersonic aircraft, but no workable commercial design. The best we can manage right now is high subsonic bordering on transonic, but the fuel costs are a deal breaker.

Glenn Beck was where I first heard of Alinsky.
Same here. Back in the 90's, I shared an apartment with three other people, and they were all sage-smudge burning, drum circle-loving, wannabe vegan pagan hippie types. None of them ever talked about Saul Alinsky. I'd never even heard of him until the Teabaggers started yammering about him.

Yeah, but the next generation is on their way to the retirement home as well, while the younger generations like myself either never heard of Alinsky or are looking to him to help organize our own political revolutions. That's what scares the shit out of guys like Newt, that after years of his generation fighting the establishment, they've become the establishment that today's kids are fighting against.

A little late here but reading quickly about Alinsky I've come to learn that George Romney said "we should listen to him." Dick Armey of Freedomworks hands out copies of "Rules for Radicals" to all the new Tea Party leaders. William F. Buckley called him an "organizational genius." Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's senior honor thesis was on Alinsky. He was not a socialist and never joined organization. When he was asked to join the Communist Party he replied:
Not at any time. I've never joined any organization—not even the ones I've organized myself. I prize my own independence too much. And philosophically, I could never accept any rigid dogma or ideology, whether it's Christianity or Marxism. One of the most important things in life is what Judge Learned Hand described as 'that ever-gnawing inner doubt as to whether you're right.' If you don't have that, if you think you've got an inside track to absolute truth, you become doctrinaire, humorless and intellectually constipated. The greatest crimes in history have been perpetrated by such religious and political and racial fanatics, from the persecutions of the Inquisition on down to Communist purges and Nazi genocide.

I see no reason to doubt Pakistani Influence in this. They want to threaten India, so getting rid of a relatively popular government that is attempting reapproachment with India would be a goal of theirs.
What worries me more is the Saudi Influence mentioned in that Article.
Good news though-Apparently 3 nations are getting very tired of Pakistan. US cables from the leak a while back paint this picture:
According to the WikiLeaks cable, in a briefing given by Ahmad Shuja Pasha to the parliamentarians it was also told that India, UAE and Russia were involved in the insurgency in Balochistan. Pasha said India has established nine training camps along the Afghan border, where they are training members of the Baloch Liberation Army. He also claimed "India and the UAE (reportedly due to opposition to construction of the Gwadar port) were funding and arming the Baloch. Pasha also claimed that the Russian government was directly involved in funding/training/supporting the insurgency.

It's interesting because Communism and socialism was noticeably popular in the USA. Especially within populist labor movements. There's no denying that they were there -- the Communists and socialists. The enemies tried to paint them as spies and typically emphasized conspiracies about their connections to the KGB and the Kremlin.

I think that's one of the handy things about Trek vs. Wars. In Trek, after the first two seasons of Next Generation, the studio realized they weren't going to be able to do anything really interesting so long as he was at the helm, so they labeled him "executive producer" and robbed him of creative control of the franchise.
Meanwhile, Lucas is still going strong with the Clone Wars business and has hinted on more than one occasion that he's reconsidering his earlier statements not to do more movies.

re: #525 Targetpractice, Worst of Both Worlds
I grew up on Star Trek, the Next Generation particularly. Needed my science fiction to be a bit more...well, scientific.
My first was seeing 2001: ASO when it first came out. I was just a child. We even had a book and brochure that was released for the movie. I think my grandfather might have gotten that. It was either at a Manhattan theater or Brooklyn. CinemaScope.

This was all I kept seeing in chat on Tattooine:

Hence why I'm still not sold on playing SWTOR. I've been sort of turned off in recent years by multiplayer games which seem to be in serious need of a smacktard fumigation.

That's probably my most favorite published RPG setting ever.
Jackson's an ass, but he also built the only ruleset I can stomach so... >

Good movie, particularly now in the DVD era, where you can pause it to take a whiz without missing a single second of the thrilling action.

I am still furious at the guy who stole my VHS tapes of the original unmolested versions of the first trilogy.

It's especially awesome and awful that Lucas went out of his way to annihilate all the 'unimproved' copies of those films.

re: #534 negativ
The Christopher Nolan films seem to be drawn mostly from Batman Year One (which was Frank Miller) and The Killing Joke (which was Allan Moore).
True enough but Year One has the Batman that ends up in Returns. As a result, I'd say there is more of Miller in Nolan's portrayal than any other single writer.

re: #521 Kragar (Proud to be Kafir)
RPGs: Serious business.
We had a paranoid Corellian smuggler, an alcoholic failed jedi navigator, an 8' tall humanoid bear Merc (because Droids cost too much), and a former Rebel Medtech who was running from his old CO because his daughter looked 18.
Oh, indeed. Lots of gamers get very into their characters. Go to GenCon this August, and you'll get an eyeful of that immersion.
Though if had to pick another Lizard to send to GenCon, it would be a toss-up between Kragar and WUB. Kragar for the gaming, or WUB for the lutz.

Yeah it is.
Hint play something with celerity, max out your dex and firearms/unarmed/melee weapons and dodge, and do as much to increase your celerity level as possible take several actions for every one your opponent does.

which is basically how you broke Shadowrun too, (old edition, never tried new)

Never could stomach Vampire or the other "darkness' games (though I'll grant Changling some interesting ideas).
OTOH, I have always had a weak spot for Exalted.

If you do it right, the gaming is the lulz.

For new edition you want to play a gnome buy up your agility to max, because gnomes are pound for pound, more powerful than orcs and trolls.
Or whatever as my brother says the current Shadowrun rules are fractually fucked up, every part of them is just as broken as every other part of them.

I keep holding out hope that, one of these days, the studios will finally say "No, George, enough. We will not pay to remaster the series for the billionth time. If you weren't that happy with it to begin with, why did you make it?!"

Shudder. I wish I could say I didn't believe it possible. Ick.
(DAMN IT, HAN SHOT FIRST!!!)
Lucas forgot about the criminal aspects of Han Solo as time went on, and he seems to have lost sight of the idea that someone might have to kill without warning. So he bowdlerized the scene, whereas the original was a killshot Frankie Yale would have admired*.
*: 5 updings to whoever gets the reference. More updings than usual, because it's a harder one than usual.

Yale? Wasn't he one of Capone's boys? (stretching the brain & trying hard to not google-cheat.)

Its fractally fucked up but that doesn't mean it isn't fun to play. We're currently working our way through the third season of Shadow Run missions after I joined a group that had currently gotten all the way through the second season.
Our last run involved comforting the 15 year old daughter of a fixer who hired us then got killed.
And by "comforting" I mean we let her man the "ROFLCopter's" (our assault helicopter) minigun when we tracked down the guys who whacked her dad, because while we are horrible people, we're horrible people who have a soft spot for orphans.

He was actually one of Capone's mentors in crime, and a man who later betrayed Capone and was killed on Capone's orders. That much gets two updings.

Ok, yeah, I remember. Before he came to Chicago from the rotton Apple.
