Live Video: Mitt Romney Speaks at CPAC, Sharing Billing With White Nationalists

Where’s the press on this?
Politics • Views: 20,650

Mitt Romney is just beginning his speech at CPAC, sharing billing with white nationalists, Birthers, and sovereign citizen weirdos. Why hasn’t the presence of outright racists at the most high profile Republican event been a bigger story? Shouldn’t presidential candidates be held responsible for legitimizing the views of these disgusting people?

It's really nuts that people still tout the 'liberal media' myth while this insanity goes virtually unreported.

Just saw Santorum at CPAC in a barber shop in a tiny Alabama town. I thought they were going to start passing snakes and bibles around. My (female) cutter kept murmuring "save him, protect him". There is no Catholic church in that town.

This is both sad and hilarious:

Grand Soros—Murdoch Alliance Exposed at CPAC

Shona Darress has it on good information that George Soros, liberal financier, scourge of the right, quarterback of the no-huddle offensive against all that makes America great and holy—the Sultan of Slant, the Maharishi of Misinformation, the Big Bopper of Bias—is secretly controlling the flow of information at Fox News. This might come as a surprise to some of you, given Fox News' fairly unambiguous vendetta against Soros and the progressive causes he helps support. But it is apparently the reality we must deal with, and Darress has the charts to prove it.

Yep and Team Romney will whine about him being taken out of context not that it bothered them doing the same to Obama. I have to say. Mitt's been overhyped as a candidate for a while. He's won one election his whole career and he's ran away from what he stood for in that campaign.

28 lawhawk  Fri, Feb 10, 2012 10:19:27am

re: #18 Lidane

Funny thing is that for most everyone not in the room (the CPAC conference), they'd boo him for what he's saying because he's so completely pandering to the right wing that he's abdicated whatever principled positions he has taken in the past.

In some ways, I almost wish Santorum wins - if only that the GOP failure is so complete in the general election that they have no one to blame but the right wing nut jobs who have pushed the party over the precipice of sanity. When you're claiming to be a party of small government, but then push to get involved in the most intimate of decisions - whether it's contraception, abortion, family planning (generally), same sex marriage, etc., they're showing that it isn't about small government, but about shifting government's power into the bedroom even more than Democrats ever could dream up in the black helicopter scenarios that the right wing contemplates.

Media outlets will report on CPAC as though it is somehow a respectable institution, but ignore who's speaking, hosting, attending, and the genuine outrage that should occur when you've got white nationalists, racists, and other extremists pushing an agenda that is wholly out of line with what most Americans want.

Here's the thing - how many people will actually keep tabs on what any of the GOP politicians say when it gets down to crunch time in the general elections outside of the political junkies? Most people aren't paying attention to the clown car circus of the GOP primaries. They're more concerned with going paycheck to paycheck. They're reading headlines and those headlines aren't indicating just how extreme the positions the GOP is taking - even in reference to CPAC.

This stuff isn't going to hammer home until after the conventions, and by then, it may be too late for people to realize just how off the rails the GOP has gone.

59 Gus  Fri, Feb 10, 2012 10:33:54am

Yep, but here's thing thing: Romney is not an idiot. Or perhaps more accurately, not as much of an idiot as some make him out to be.

He HAS to gain the support of the far right base to get the nomination. His support has thus far been weaker than anticipated and I'm sure his campaign is into a minor panic mode right now, so his kissing as many far right butts as he can to try and pull support to his side.

My guess is he will change positions (yet again) leading into the general and trying to appear more moderate in an attempt to secure the independents he needs to have any shot at the White House.

My guess is also that this strategy will fail...miserably.

63 erik_t  Fri, Feb 10, 2012 10:36:01am

Reuters:

Twitter, Weibo Spread Rumors of North Korean Leader Kim Jong-un's Assassination

Rumors that Kim Jong-un, the country’s supreme leader, has been assassinated just months after he took power originated on Chinese microblogging service Weibo and have now spread all over Twitter.

Others are reporting that Jong-un may be on the run rather than dead, but that some kind of coup is taking place.

The rumors remain unsubstantiated, and as Adrian Chen at Gawker wrote, these types of reports crop up often given the furtive nature of North Korea’s government.

However, the reports are beginning to gather steam, especially now that a couple of American news outlets have reported on the rumors.

Wouldn't that be something?

Romney: "I will reinstate the Mexico City policy - I'll ensure that Planned Parenthood gets no more federal support."

Big surprise. /

The Mexico City Policy, also known by critics as the Mexico City Gag Rule and the Global Gag Rule,[1] was an intermittent United States government policy that required all non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that receive federal funding to refrain from performing or promoting abortion services, as a method of family planning, in other countries. The policy is a political flashpoint in the abortion debate, with Republican administrations adopting it and Democratic administrations rescinding it. The policy was enacted soon after Republican President Ronald Reagan took office in 1984, rescinded by Democratic President Bill Clinton in January 1993, re-instituted in January 2001 as Republican President George W. Bush took office, and rescinded January 23, 2009, 2 days after Democratic President Barack Obama took office.[2]

This is why we can't have Republicans in the White House.

Maybe it gets very little coverage because it is so irrelevant outside the super conservative choir. Does the MSM even attend this thing? I know thousands of republicans attend. Out of 55 million. Their straw poll is almost always wrong. I asked a few Republicans I know and none of the 3 has ever paid any attention to CPAC let alone gone.

These guys are too far gone for most Republicans. And even right leaning indies like myself just point and laugh if we pay any attention at all.

It seems short of an alien landing this thing will always be below the average voters radar. It's like a Green party event and the Democrats. Too far out there to have much relevance.

If the MSM suddenly took it seriously, that might be a bad thing. Let it rot under the compost.

Heh. Handel has a political agenda, and she pushed SGK into a confrontation with PP, which rightfully pushed back over the politicization over health care for women. Pushing back against a bully doesn't make one a bully, but protecting themselves against unwarranted actions that would deprive women of access to care.

They finally got to Ron Paul when? This is his second national campaign for the Presidency - and only now are his actions coming into full scrutiny (and even then, the main media outlets are dragging their feet). So, in Paul's case, they're getting around to the claims 4-5 years after his first campaign for the presidency, and many of his comments, linkages, etc., were known during the 1990s and before.

It just means that the media will eventually get around to taking Santorum or Romney to task just in time for the 2016 elections.

Sure they'll preach it but they sure as hell won't practice it.

re: #81 Daniel Ballard

If it's so insignificant, why are the following speaking there:
Mitt Romney
John Boehner
Rick Santorum
Rick Perry
Newt Gingrich
Bobby Jindal
Michele Bachmann
Sarah Palin
etc.

?

CPAC: Christians Have Been too Nice and Need to Stop Compromising

During a panel at CPAC on "The Role of Faith, Life, & Family in Our Culture & the 2012 Elections," the panelists claimed that the slippery slope toward gay marriage all began when people started accepting the idea of recognizing the legitimacy pf gay relationships by granting civil unions, and Andy Blom, Executive Director of the American Principles Project, blamed it on the fact that Christians just don't want to be mean and called on Christians to be aggressive in defending their values and refuse to compromise:

How do 2 consenting adults exercising their private civil rights oppress a person's religious beliefs? If you don't believe in gay marriage, then don't marry a homosexual and quit butting in where you aren't wanted.

I can only assume that from their intense concern about 'death panels', that these folks believe that everyone is entitled to lifelong medical care, provided to them without regard to age, mental or physical ability, or financial status.

I quite agree. Make it so, and I'm your voter.

If, on the other hand, you mean that you can make greater access to health care scary by suggesting that it will give the government the right to kill you, please simply shut up.

As if claims adjusters as we have now are already not death panels. They are, every time a treatment is denied as too expensive or a bogus rejection is mailed.

Somehow, that's fine. A person can die because of lack of insurance, or because their insurance won't pay, or because a doctor decides they're just not a good candidate for the transplant, and these guys don't bat an eye.

However, universal health care is terrifying, because decisions could be make about whether a person lives or dies.

Could you imagine having a liberal political conference and then putting together a round table on Hollywood discussing the political merits of movies and shows in general? As it is now with CPAC they are almost pleading for political control of Hollywood which runs as a free-market operation basing it's movies on those same free-market forces. Movies aren't made to be liberal. They typically reflect your average movie goer who is mostly in a teen to 30s demographic. But it remains a free-market enterprise. CPAC is almost sound like it want political control of movies. Effectively trying to create a conservative Politburo that control movie content for the "moral and ethical education of America."

299 lawhawk  Fri, Feb 10, 2012 12:07:25pm

While the Catholic Church is railing against the supposedly new Administration regs on contraceptives, the Church has been complying with New York State regulations that do the exact same thing for more than a decade. They say that they're doing it under duress, but they've been in compliance with NYS law since 2002:

The state began requiring contraception coverage in 2002, and Catholic institutions, after losing a court battle over the issue, have followed the law. Catholic institutions like Fordham University, which is run by a lay board of trustees in the tradition of the Jesuit religious order, provide contraception coverage for employees and students.

Fordham, which has 15,000 undergraduate and graduate students, seeks to comply with Catholic teaching by barring its student health center from prescribing or dispensing birth control pills unless they are used for such conditions as severe acne or endometriosis, according to Bob Howe, Fordham’s director of communications. Students who seek birth control pills to prevent pregnancies must obtain prescriptions from a private doctor or a service like Planned Parenthood, and the college’s insurance carrier will then cover the pills under its standard reimbursement schedule.

“We currently follow New York State law,” Mr. Howe said. “For employees and students, we provide insurance coverage that includes contraception. That’s the law.”

Joseph Zwilling, a spokesman for the Archdiocese of New York, referred questions about the archdiocese’s practices to Dennis Poust, a spokesman for the New York State Catholic Conference, who did not immediately return a call. But Mr. Poust was quoted in The Buffalo News as saying of the state’s requirement: “In many cases, there was no other choice but to comply under protest. None of it is voluntary. It is all under duress.”

Didn't they hate 'The Passion of The Christ' when it came out? I remember somebody was up in arms about it.

Was it the right doing that? And have they ever thought that maybe Mel Gibson doesn't want to make a prequel or sequel to it too? Not a fan of Mel but complaining about films like the Passion being blacklisted is laughable when Mel financed that film himself.

Another report from the DOD.

Navy Names Littoral Combat Ship Gabrielle Giffords

Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced today that the next Independence variant littoral combat ship (LCS) will be named the USS Gabrielle Giffords.

The selection of Gabrielle Giffords, designated LCS 10, honors the former Congresswoman from Tucson, Ariz., and who is known for supporting the military and veterans.

Mabus also announced the ship’s sponsor will be Roxanna Green. Green is the mother of Christina-Taylor Green, the nine-year-old girl who was killed while attending the meeting of constituents where Giffords was shot. A ship’s sponsor plays an important role in the life of the ship, naval tradition holds that her spirit and presence guide the ship throughout its service life.

“I am pleased to honor Gabrielle Giffords and the people of Arizona with the naming of this ship,” said Mabus. “Giffords and the ship’s sponsor, Roxanna Green, are sources of great inspiration and represent the Navy and Marine Corps qualities of overcoming, adapting and coming out victoriously despite great challenges.”

...

The USS Gabrielle Giffords will be 419 feet in length, have a waterline beam of 103 feet, displace approximately 3,000 tons, and make speed in excess of 40 knots. The construction will be led by Austal Shipbuilding in Mobile, Ala.

This is the 17th ship to be named for a woman, and the 13th ship to be named for a living person since 1850. This is the first ship to bear Giffords’ name.

One way to handle this is to create an account as though you're that commenter's mother. Say his username is "r0idrage87". Your username should be "r0idrage87s_mother". Then follow him around, replying to every one of his messages with things like, "honey, when you get through playing with your little computer friends, I need you to take the trash out", things like that.

There’s already been substantial coverage of yesterday’s CPAC panel on multiculturalism featuring not one, but two, prominent white nationalists – Peter Brimelow and Bob Vandervoort. That may have just been the warm-up act for tomorrow morning.
Reps. Mario Diaz-Balart and David Rivera, both Republicans from the Miami metro area, are scheduled to appear on stage at CPAC with Vandervoort on an immigration panel entitled “High Fences, Wide Gates: States vs. the Feds, the Rule of Law & American Identity”:

re: #524 Charles Johnson

Wow, folks.

Rick Santorum had dinner with white nationalist Bob Vandervoort. This is unreal.

For those who don't know:

Vandervoort was at the center of white nationalist activity during his time in Illinois. While he was in charge, Chicagoland Friends of American Renaissance often held joint meetings with the local chapter of the Council of Conservative Citizens. The group held events featuring numerous white nationalist figures. Vandervoort also made appearances at white nationalist events outside Illinois, for instance participating in the 2009 Preserving Western Civilization Conference.

Started as a modest newsletter in 1990, American Renaissance has grown into an important vehicle for white nationalist ideas. American Renaissance first described itself as a "literate, undeceived journal of race, immigration and the decline of civility." It claimed that "White people" had lost their voice and that the United States was in danger of losing its "national and cultural core."

re: #524 Charles Johnson

Wow, folks.

Rick Santorum had dinner with white nationalist Bob Vandervoort. This is unreal.

I had to look this guy up. And here's what I found:

[Link: groups.google.com...]

[...]
Subject: David Horowitz Frontpage Runs American Renaissance article...
From: Bob Vandervoort
[...]

As you may already know, David Horowitz (former 60's Leftist radical now
a conservative) runs a very brash, no-holds-barred website against Political
Correctness. He posted an article on a particularly gruesome crime that
occurred in Wichita, Kansas recently.

What I find especially interesting is that Jared Taylor's American
Renaissance group ([Link: www.amren.com...] is definitely a strong advocate of
immigration reform. While Horowitz takes issue with some of Jared Taylor's
positions, he acknowledges their often very valid points. Horowitz said he
"makes no apologies" for posting a piece from American Renaissance
(including a link to their site) and that "Taylor is a very intelligent and
principled man."

So I think this should be welcomed as good news, that at last the debate
is finally being opened up to a wider audience and these PC taboos about
race, immigration, crime etc. can finally be honestly addressed and talked
about.

[Link: www.frontpagemag.com...]

So I killed 2 rabbits with one shot: learned about Vandervoort. And learned that David Horowitz likes American Renaissance and that FrontpageMag hosts at least one article by American Renaissance, and even has an empty profile for a columnist by the same moniker.

I also found this:

[Link: archive.frontpagemag.com...]

Symposium: Katrina, Race and Silence
By: Jamie Glazov
FrontPageMagazine.com | Friday, September 30, 2005

In his recent article “Africa in our Midst: Lessons from Katrina,” which runs in the Oct. 2005 issue of American Renaissance, Jared Taylor gives an account of horrifying and explicit details concerning the actions of thugs and criminals in New Orleans which severely frustrated, and often completely halted, relief efforts for several days following Hurricane Katrina.

The thugs and criminals happen to be black, which is not surprising since 67% of New Orleans population is black. On the other hand 1) nobody else has reported these outrages in the comprehensive manner Taylor has and 2) many black leaders like Jesse Jackson have used the events surrounding Hurricane Katrina as an indictment of white people.

Apparently fifty years after the passage of the Civil Rights acts, when the very mayor in charge of government in New Orleans is a black man elected by its people, the only acceptable discussion of race in America is one that conforms to the dramas of half a century before. Even if black people suffer at the hands of black people, whitey must be somehow to blame.

Jared Taylor is a white nationalist who has clearly rejected a multi-racial society. At the end of his report, he draws racist conclusions that we here at Frontpagemag.com find repugnant. At the same time, we are appalled that no other journalist or commentator has had the courage or the integrity to describe these horrific events without which the picture of this disaster -- and the way we understand our responsibility as a nation -- is not and cannot be complete.

Today Frontpagemag.com has assembled a distinguished panel to discuss what happened and why someone like Jared Taylor is singled out to be the messenger, and what the events themselves and the silence that surrounds them tells us.

“Last year, Virginia Abernethy, a professor emeritus at Vanderbilt's medical school and leader of the Tanton-influenced Population-Environment Balance, became the latest in the Tanton network to join the Citizens Informer editorial board. ‘My view of the Council of Conservative Citizens,’ she told the Intelligence Report, ‘is that they support traditional values and the freedom of people to associate with people that they want to associate with.’ She spoke on the same day that the CCC's Web site carried a comparison of black pop singer Michael Jackson and an ape — a comparison that Abernethy suggested may have reflected ‘bad taste,’ but not racism. ‘What is the point of a society that pushes [racial] mixing?’ she asked when told of another CCC Web item that derided the wife of murdered Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl as a ‘mixed race’ woman who is ‘committed to racial and ethnic amalgamation.’ ‘Our society pushes mixing,’ the retired Vanderbilt professor added. ‘I think this is probably not a good thing for the society.’

Frankly, calling known child-molester Michael Jackson an ape is mild. And believing in racial equality is one thing; believing that race-mixing is a positive good is quite another and not required by it.

More here:

Panel participants included Vandervoort and Rosalie Porter of ProEnglish, John Derbyshire of National Review and Serge Trifkovic of Chronicles magazine, a paleoconservative journal that says it has “defended Western Christian civilization” by “confronting Islam” and opposing immigration. The February issue of Chronicles, which was given out at the panel, includes a back-page essay by Taki Theodoracopulos called “Those Racist Police.” It leads by noting that a member of the NYPD was shot by “a black drug dealer” who had been “previously let loose by a black female judge.” Theodoracopulos uses this as an excuse, naturally, to bash the New York Times for editorializing against executing Mumia Abu-Jamal. “[The Times’s] pet hates look to me like normal, white, Christian Americans, while it fills its pages with announcements of same-sex couples getting married, profiles of rap ‘artists,’ and front-page coverage of Catholic priests’ abuses.”

That's the same code you get by using the "Embed this Tweet" option. It's just a blockquote with some special classes - the Twitter API Javascript (loaded by LGF at page load) looks for those tags and replaces them with the code to produce the embedded tweet.
