Thursday Night Acoustic Excellence: Punch Brothers: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

Just the best acoustic band in the universe, that’s all
Music • Views: 29,958

These NPR Tiny Desk Concerts highlight some of the best music in the world today, and this one is a real gem among gems.

Spoiler alert: The Punch Brothers came to the Tiny Desk on Chris Thile’s birthday. We made him a cake and gave him an NPR surprise! This wasn’t the first time the brilliant mandolinist had brought a project to my desk — it was his fourth. The last time was with his longtime band Nickel Creek, but also with his new braces. So the cake we presented here was inscribed “Brace Yourself Chris Happy Birthday.” He blew out the candles and then, along with this versatile and talented band, rocked our world.

Punch Brothers mixes the worlds of bluegrass, pop and classical. It’s a tough combination to imagine, an even harder one to make work, but this band of fiddler, Gabe Witcher, Noam Pikelny on banjo, guitarist Chris Eldridge and bassist Paul Kowert make the unimaginable contagious and fun. They push boundaries and make music like no one else.

Set List
• “My Oh My” 2:04
• “Boll Weevil” 6:23
• “Magnet” 10:36
• “Julep” 14:45

Really enjoy these guys thanks. They were especially good in on the Inside Lllewyn Davis soundtrack concert.

I posted this during the day a few days ago but I think some Lizards may have missed it so I am showing again: my harp, my hands, playing a tune composed by one of the other local harpists.

Glad you did. Flash has been bombing out, but it looks like it will play this time. Going for wine first.

I had to look up the law on ‘profane swearing.’

“If any person profanely curses or swears or is intoxicated in public, whether such intoxication results from alcohol, narcotic drug or other intoxicant or drug of whatever nature, he shall be deemed guilty of a Class 4 misdemeanor.”

re: #28 WhatEVs

FYI, this is my process:

You send me your rez, I read it and take notes.

We speak on the phone and you tell me what you did, what you accomplished, etc., in each prior role (basically answer all my questions). Had to be in the phone as it would take days upon days to exchange emails for me to get all the nuances, which are usually pretty important.

You tell me what type of job you are seeking.

I do my writing magic targeting, specifically what you did and relate it to what you want to do.

I’ll do both of you at no charge.

My track record is very good. My resume helped my old (kinda good for nothing) tenant a job, along with a friend I used to know.

Cavaet: I haven’t done one in a few years. But if you don’t like it, no loss of $$. If you do like it, tell others and I’ll charge.

p.s. I don’t believe in BSing on resumes. Flattering experience usually suffices.

The findings reveal, in staggering detail, the lengths to which Google went to maintain its dominance in search and bolster its lucrative advertising business.

Google typically ranks sites based on metrics like the number of links that point to a site and how often users click on those links. But at times
the company boosted links to its own properties even when rival services
might have better served its users, according to the report.

If acomparison shopping site from a competitor should have ranked highest, for instance, Google Shopping was sometimes placed above it. And when Yelp was deemed a more relevant result, Google Local would appear on top, the FTC staff wrote.

Google also copied, or “scraped,” content from rivals such as TripAdvisor and amazon.com, and threatened to remove those sites from its search listing if they objected, the Journal reported. In one instance, Google used Amazon’s sales rankings to determine how it ranked products for its own listings, it said.

In so doing, Google sent a message that it would “use its monopoly power over search to extract the fruits of its rivals’ innovations,” the FTC staff wrote.

There are low demand units that use electricity to heat the water; might need one for each hot water source.

There are high demand units that use natural gas and are suitable for whole house use. Biggest limitations are in flow rates, not a big problem for smaller households.

Hot water temperatures can be lower in the winter during cold weather. Tend to be more expensive to buy and maintain. Not sure about the latest units, but some are know for cycling (can get short bursts of cold water when using hot).

In much of tech, managers and devlopers do not get along. Just trust me on this. You usually have a pointy-hair at the top, then a layer of jr. pointy-hairs mixed with a few great directors and managers. Those great managers and directors are the only reason anything gets done. They buffer the developers from the pointy-hairs.

At my company we have a VP of Development that makes Dilbert’s boss look like Richard Feynman. I LOATHE the guy. He likes to overcommit his teams and then blame them for failures. Takes credit for other people’s work. Very much a kiss up, kick down person. i cannot put into words how much I loathe this man.

The only reason his org functions is his four directors that report to him are all amazing. The bastard inherited them. He was too stupid to leave them alone. He has screwed them over for a year. They kept firing warning shots to HR, to this guy’s peers, to our CTO that they were fed up. Nothing got done.

Today, all four of them called a meeting with him and HR. In unison, they pulled out their resignation letters and slapped them down. All of them have new jobs. Gone in 2 weeks. Do not want counteroffers or negotiation. 2 weeks.

His whole management team is gone.

It was sublime. Gorgeous. Breathtaking. My boss is this asshole’s peer and he is trying not to gloat in any way, but man….we’ve been warning our CTO and CIO for a year that the guy is going to cause major wreckage. But this? Did not fathom it would be this epic of a revenge.

No idea what will happen. No one can replace them. I was asked to move over, my, “hell, no!” is still echoing in the halls.

Fun times, fun times.

That was true up to IE3 or 4, when the EU took M$oft to court for monopolistic practices. Thereafter, they made IE more standalone and optional for users.

Yep, my employer updated their computers to Windows 7 a week before Doomsday for XP and only because the contractor which handles their IT stuff was going to charge them a surcharge for every XP machine they had.

One of my dad’s former employers was still using Internet Explorer 6 a couple years ago on Windows XP machines because Internet Explorer 7 wouldn’t work with one of their intranet sites.

I taught my daughters at the age of 10 and 12 that IE was only for downloading a real browser. That was 10 years ago when they learned how to install Windows on their own. It’s a good rule of thumb.

I never had a problem with Internet Explorer. Judging by the tone of some of the comments, I think part if it is based on their feeling about Microsoft. I will also confess that I miss XP but I did get used to 7. I don’t like upgrading unless it’s at gunpoint. In my experience, the old machine won’t run the new software properly. I suppose it’s written for newer computers so when I get a new one I’ll have to get used to Windows x.

I do find it fascinating that, having accessed this site on IE, Firefox, Safari, and Chrome, that there are slight differences in the appearance on each one. For example, with IE, all the comment boxes have right angles, with FF they have slight radii, Chrome, slightly larger and Safari has the biggest. It makes me wonder how these four systems take the same code and display it four different ways.

85 wheat-dogghazi-mailgate  Mar 19, 2015 11:49:03pm

Some Chinese websites seem to be designed only for IE. Using Chrome, Opera or FF works for about 90% of functionality, but not that critical 10%. I have to use IE for my Internet banking and online shopping tasks, because only IE seems willing to run the security app required. It’s a Win7 problem more than IE, maybe, because with Vista I could use any browser.

I’d be hosed if I had an OSX or Linux box. Most financial institutions here only code for Windows .

So apparently, not spending enough time outdoors can make you nearsighted? Damn! Maybe if I’d spent my whole life in the basement, I wouldn’t be about 5 powers farsighted.

Hmm. Story of my life, being a book worm and being pale enough I burned easily which kept me out of the sun. But I only needed glasses for driving most of my life. Then, in my 60s, all of a sudden I had “second sight” and didn’t need glasses for anything and I can still read a telephone book w/o correction. Went through my middle age without having to resort to reading glasses or bifocals so never got really presbyopic. But that “second sight”, in which the eyes were compensating each other for small failures in both distance and near vision, was a precursor to the cataracts now developing, although it took them about 7 yrs. Now, until I have them removed, I need a little correction for driving, so I got sunglasses, since it’s difficult seeing at night (another indicator of cataracts).

However, exposure to UV rays will speed up the cataract development, so if I were a young’un, I’d hit the books and stay out of UV rays. : )

BTW, if you live long enough, you’ll eventually develop cataracts, but they’re removed more easily these days, leaving you with good sight. We’ve come a long way since I worked for an ophthalmologist 50 yrs ago.. He did cataract surgery and you should have seen the thick glasses or contact lenses they were using back then post-surgery. Now, those aren’t needed, so progress, people!

Solar Eclipses in the Middle Ages

reading.ac.uk

“In the 12th century the chronicler John of Worcester wrote: ‘in 1133 a darkness appeared in the sky throughout England. In some places it was only a little dark but in others candles were needed. … The sun looked like a new moon, though its shape constantly changed. Some said that this was an eclipse of the sun. If so, then the sun was at the Head of the Dragon and the moon at its Tail, or vice versa. … King Henry left England for Normandy, never to return alive.’

It’s the Dragon Causing Everything

The account mixes astronomical knowledge of eclipses with a fateful link to political turmoil, encapsulated by the image of the great celestial dragon, whose head and tail mark the points on the orbits of the sun and moon at which eclipses can occur. In spring the moon’s path crosses that of the sun at the ‘head of the dragon’, whilst the autumnal point is the ‘tail’.

There is a film from WWII or shortly after in which he plays a macho role. He’s a very cool captain of a small destroyer escort with an open bridge in In Which We Serve. Water from near misses is splashing over him while he is calmly ordering: “Shoot, shoot, shoot.”

That’s epic. Love stories like this.

Wal-Mart to Pay $10M to Family of Comedian Killed in Tracy Morgan Van Crash

dnainfo.com

NEW YORK CITY — The family of a comedian friend of Tracy Morgan who was killed last June when a Wal-Mart truck crashed into a luxury van he was riding in got $10 million from the retail giant to settle a lawsuit, DNAinfo New York has learned.

“Wal-Mart made the large payout to the family of James McNair to avoid potential losses from litigation, the McNair family’s lawyer said in court papers.

(snip)

“Zaslow said that Wal-Mart agreed to settle for the large amount because he used the potential losses the retail chain faced from the highly publicized lawsuit as leverage.

“Although many of my colleagues insisted that the strategy would not be successful, and for many months of negotiations this assessment of damages was not being entertained by counsel for Wal-Mart, through months of heated negotiations, [I] was able to convince Wal-Mart to view the damages through this rather unorthodox approach,” Zaslow wrote in his filing.” More

Both “climate change” and “global warming” are fully accepted scientific terms (see e,g,: IPCC) that refer to different, albeit related phenomena. What Luntz advocated was always using CC instead of GW because of the connotations. This doesn’t diminish the usefulness and acceptability of the term CC.

re: #136 Targetpractice

Oh, it’s so much worse than that.

You’ve got the hawks demanding more spending for the military, which means they’ve got to cut elsewhere - and/or hike taxes/fees. They aren’t going to hike taxes, so it means cutting safety net programs, and a few of them realize that would be bad news since their constituents actually rely on them.

The alternative is that they add to deficits, so the deficit hawks complain.

Never mind that the tax burden on those most able to afford taxes is at its lowest point in generations. These fiscal illiterates keep pushing the trickle down theory even though decades of proof shows it does no such thing.

There isn’t a single budget proposal that the GOP can line up behind because they can’t agree on what to do. Other than attack the ACA, that is.

And when they go after the ACA, they do so disingenously as well. Claiming that the ACA cuts Medicare by hundreds of billions of dollars as a scare tactic (see the Ryan plan from a few years back mirroring the ACA in that very respect).

The only bright spot for now is that there appears to be bipartisan consensus on eliminating the need to annually fix the Medicare reimbursement, though the deficit hawks are still complaining that this would add to the deficit.

Memo to deficit hawks - if you’re that interested in cutting the deficit, raise taxes and cut spending elsewhere - I’d suggest the F-22 and F-35 projects for starters, since both of those boondoggles are leaving the military with aircraft uniquely incapable of doing all of what it was intended to do for at least a decade to come.

144 Fourth Football of the Apocalypse  Mar 20, 2015 6:35:19am

Oh, and before the whole bus shuffle thing, I’m scrolling through my Facebook feeds (yes, I know I should know better) and I’m hit with this derp about the Obamas being on an airplane and the joke about throwing a dollar bill out the window to make everyone happy and the pilot says hurr hurr I can throw you and Michelle out and make everyone happy.

Probably little or nothing more than state-mandated worker’s compensation. That’s usually a couple multiples of a year’s pay. Worker’s comp exists to protect the employer from suits—it’s normally the ‘sole remedy in law’.

Instead, the monies President Obama requested that exceed sequestration are going to be put in the Overseas Contingency Operations supplemental budget, which is not subject to sequestration.

This is of course bullshit Congressional math and it proves Congress isn’t really serious about cutting the budget. But Congress has never really been serious about cutting the budget, so what else is new?

Yeah but that article is talking about an *offensive* capability. If it was a defensive capability, that would raise the question of how effective the stealth is, but for an offensive capability, what’s the point? How would that even work, and why would would we want it to?

**Edit**
I would think the standing up of the Cyber Command or whatever they are calling it these days, as well as the introduction (in the Army at least) of a Cyber branch in the next couple of years would show how serious the DoD is taking Cyber more than adding another capability onto a platform where they haven’t actually gotten its original capabilities to work.

What it tells me is that this bird has absolutely no growth potential. They’re trying to thread the needle of developing a cyberwarfare pod that doesn’t compromise its stealth, but which will mean compromising something else, whether it be speed, range, or maneuverability. All so they can get ahead of questions about its survivability amongst Congressmen who are already skeptical about the need for the program.

re: #149 Dark_Falcon

They had to end the F-22 production early because it was so overbudget and bloated. It’s a hanger queen that still suffers from serious deficiencies. Sure, it might get worked out over the next decade, but that’s added costs that we have to pay for (or otherwise add to the national debt). And we’re already seeing added costs as a result of upgrading to F-22A, which allows them to fire off JDAMs
(which current aircraft are able to do). The F-22 also lacks the ability to go after targets that UAVs and even attack helicopters are able to do - a mission that is critical in current environment given the ongoing terror threat from the likes of al Shabaab, al Qaeda, ISIL/ISIS, Taliban factions, etc.

Air superiority may still be the F-22’s forte, but it’s not what the USAF needs to fight the fights it’s being asked to do. Existing aircraft can do the same job better, and for less money.

Same with the F-35. The program lacks an operational cannon for at least another couple of years, which is bad news if you’re planning on sending the A-10 to the Boneyard ASAP. The F-35 was meant to be all things to all services, and it isn’t doing any of them particularly well, except as to suck up funds. More to the point:

Bloomberg is now saying that Pentagon director of combat testing Michael Gilmore recently warned Congress of “serious deficiencies” in the F-35 stealth fighter — deficiencies over and above those related to the gun. Already over budget and overdue for deployment, Gilmore says the F-35 still has only limited ability to:

drop bombs
share data with other aircraft
track hostile incoming missiles
identify enemy radar
and, in general, perform “effective combat operations against advanced enemy air defenses”
His understated assessment: This plane has “deficiencies remaining that will affect operational units.”

It would seem that those deficiencies go to the very essence of what the F-35 is supposed to do, not only for the USAF, but USMC, USN, and foreign partners who were intent to buy units.

It further lacks the ability to deliver sufficient weapons on target without using external hardpoints, which undermines the whole purpose of stealth.

Software upgrades are needed, and those will be years in the making before they are migrated to units in service now.

Lockheed needs this program since it will make up a huge chunk of its revenue in coming years. Every bug means a fix (and a cost to taxpayers). Every delay means another fix (and cost to taxpayers).

re: #159 Targetpractice

Any external pod will necessarily affect its stealth characteristics, and they’re already attaching external hardpoints, which further degrade its stealth.

The whole point of the purchase was to: 1) provide stealth aircraft to USN, USMC, and USAF so as to 2) permit the retirement of F-15, F-16, F-18 aircraft as they end useful life cycles. Instead, we’re finding that in order to do the job of the aircraft it is supposed to replace, it’s losing stealth characteristics, and it still can’t do the jobs of those aircraft, up to and including firing its gun or dropping the kinds of munitions that current conflicts are requiring (SDBs).

OH, and I almost forgot the biggest problem - it costs far more than the models it replaces. That’s both as a per unit cost and for actually flying the aircraft. That’s huge over the life of the aircraft since it means that limited funds will be strained even further because of the high operational costs.

A rough outline of the battle: Fiscal hawks are insisting that the GOP abide by the spending caps imposed four years ago by the Budget Control Act of 2011—aka the sequester—while defense hawks are demanding that lawmakers break the caps to provide additional cash to the nation’s military to help fight ISIS. Neither group appears willing to cave on what each says is its top priority.

Faced with finding a compromise between an immovable object and an unstoppable force, House Budget Chairman Tom Price on Tuesday attempted some numerical sleight of hand. He stuck to the sequester’s $523 billion cap on defense spending for next year, but proposed funneling an extra $40 billion or so to the Pentagon via a separate emergency war fund that is not subject to the 2011 limits. The accounting gimmick threaded the needle on paper but failed to do the same on Capitol Hill.

Yet again, the target of Islamic terrorists are Muslims that the terror groups deem insufficiently Muslim (they don’t adhere to the terrorists’ worldview). Other than 9/11, Islamic terror groups that claim to carry out jihad against the West and US in particular continue to slaughter more Muslims than any other group other there.

The targets of this terrorism are Muslims. And continue to be Muslims.

If you want to stop this terrorism, you’ve got to get other Muslims to fight. So, unlike the Islamophobes and xenophobes of the Geller/Bolton variety (to say nothing of the RWNJ nuke’em all types), you need to try and work with some segment of Muslims to continue the fight.

The problem is deducing which groups to work with, who might falter, leaving the weapons in the hands of those who you’re trying to fight, and what countries to work with.

For the GOP, everything is black and white (or should I say blue and white) since their ME vision appears to start/stop with Israel and little else. They don’t quite grasp the nuances involved, or that saying you’ll support X means you inadvertently give support to Y, who you don’t want to help (see Syria, Assad, ISIL, Iran, and rebel groups).

It’s a hangar queen in search of a mission. If it doesn’t have a mission, you need to invent one in order to keep pilots busy, because they need to have the training and airtime to be current. Without current pilots, you can’t fly the plane - leaving it in the hangar.

But the congresscritters’ corporate sponsors demand it!

One of my professors when I was working on my bachelor’s degree was a former Colonel in the United States Marine Corps and knew a lot of different people and had a lot of stories.

He was talking about a congressional hearing where they had put money in the budget for the USAF to get another 90 C-130s (or something similar). The USAF General said, “Congressman, we really don’t kneed those airplanes.” The Congressman said, “Well, that’s too bad, you’re getting them.”

Reminds me of when Lyin’ Paul Ryan told the Joint Chiefs that they were lying about the waste in the defense budget. You forfeit any right to be taken seriously on the budget when you not only refuse to cut the defense budget but actually think increases are needed.

All so they can get ahead of questions about its survivability amongst Congressmen who are already skeptical about the need for the program.

WEEKENDS ARE FOR COMMUNISTS. REAL MURICANS WORK 24/7.

Two Wisconsin state lawmakers have proposed a bill that would roll back the state’s requirement that companies give workers at least one day off every seven days.

Currently, state law mandates a 24-hour rest period every seven days for employees in factory and mercantile workplaces. The bill would create an exemption allowing workers to voluntarily opt out of the rest period and keep working more than seven consecutive days.

The Me-262 was certainly a marvel of engineering, but it was also a waste of resources at a time when the Reich could barely afford it. Hitler’s directive didn’t really make much difference in the deployment of the plane, as the factories would have still needed to be moved to avoid the strategic bombing campaign. And once the oil refineries were bombed into bits, it didn’t really matter. Like a lot of programs pursued by the Germans, it was a waste of resources that could have gone into building proven weapons of war.

NHL is still 98% white.

A couple of reasons for this: The sport is probably the most international of the major five sports (along with futbol), but mostly from the Scandinavian and northern asian former soviet states - and Canada. The U.S. players primarily come from northern midwestern and upper east coast areas, many of which have low minority populations anyway.

2) It’s hella expensive compared to the other four major sports, especially for a goalie. (none of the equipment is provided for you by a school). You’ve got to pay for ice time, equipment, league fees, etc., which is why, at least in dallas when I was there, the ice rink was in the tony suburbs and not downtown (not Reunion, but the facility where league teams played).

And another reminder? The folks who ginned up the term climate change? That’d be GOP spin doctors who were unwilling to accept global warming, but knew something was afoot but were afraid to fully step out from the GOP big tent of denialism.

Well, no. Luntz did convince the GOP to change their use of AGW to CC in 2003 because it sounded less scary, but the term has been in common use since the early ’70s. The use of the term climate change predates the use of global warming. When the WMO started IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) in 1988 climate change was already the formal term.

Yep, I was thinking the same. Really the GOP was actually interestingly enough more closer to being a fiscally conservative party when they were actually a more liberal party overall.

Their economic policy has been poisoned by the supply side economists and the Laffer Curve, despite all empirical evidence that this policy is an abject failure.

OK, while Israel’s agriculture has been remarkable, will people stop acting like the Arabs were unable to grow food themselves before 1947. There has been farming in the Middle East since literally the dawn of civilization. Yeah, Egypt does not grow food in the Sinai. That’s not because they can’t, but because they don’t have to. tTey have the Nile basin, some of the most fertile land in the entire world. Israel has to turn “the desert green”, because they had no other choice. They lacked enough arable land otherwise. Egypt doesn’t have that issue.

Adult Lawmaker Ruins Children's Bill Submission With Anti-Abortion Joke

A group of New Hampshire fourth-graders who traveled to the state’s capital in Concord to learn about the joys of civic engagement were given a surprisingly realistic picture of the American legislative process after one lawmaker used their bill—a proposal to name the red-tailed hawk the official state raptor—as an opportunity to rail against the evils of abortion.

House Bill 373—drafted, again by a group of nine- and 10-year-old elementary school students—was discussed on the New Hampshire House floor yesterday after the class managed to pass it through the body’s environment and agriculture committee.

Republican State Rep. Warren Groen said the following of the proposal:

“(The red-tailed hawk) mostly likes field mice and small rodents. It grasps them with its talons and then uses its razor sharp beak to rip its victims to shreds and then basically tear it apart, limb from limb. And I guess the shame about making this the state bird is it would make a much better mascot for Planned Parenthood.”

I mean the problem with FNC to me isn’t that they’ve got a conservative slant. Bias is inevitable but I have a huge problem with the fact that A) they outright lie i.e. your Muslim-Sharia no go example and B) relying on hatred and bigotry. It’s just a shitty network. The initiative calls for “any person who willingly touches another person of the same gender for purposes of sexual gratification be put to death by bullets to the head or by any other convenient method.”

According to the Secretary of State’s office, “Upon receipt of the fee and request, the Attorney General will prepare a circulating title and summary, which will be the official summary of the initiative measure. (Elections Code section 9004(a).)”

While it is likely the proposal may never make it to the ballot due to lack of signatures or because it has been blocked by the California Supreme Court as unconstitutional, Harris is still compelled by law to title and describe the initiative for her fellow Californians.

Biggest problem with the Schwalbe is the same one that plagues the US. They couldn’t make up their mind what its job was supposed to be. Plus the feudal system that was Nazi Germany meant every fiefdom was fighting to get their own jet fighter into service.

If they’d focused just a little I believe the Me-262 would have been in service a couple of years earlier. That would have ended the strategic bombing real quick.

Here’s the problem the Republicans have wrt young people and messaging. Obama can go on Saturday Night Live or whatever and poke fun at himself while encouraging viewers to sign up for health insurance, because fundamentally people understand that the policy makes sense for them.

The Republican message essentially relies on people not being smart and just going along with soundbites. OBAMA CAN JUST LET ALL THE IMMIGRANTS IN NOW RUN AROUND SCREAMING. Etc.

So you can’t have Boehner or whoever crack wise with some hip-ish young comedian, because after one or two exchanges the sham becomes super-obvious. Instead they have to post gifs of actresses saying “whut?” and hope that no-one thinks too deeply about anything.

Not so much. Most likely the British would have devoted extra efforts to getting the Gloster Meteor into service and the US P-80 Shooting Star would have had its development accelerated. And the 262’s engine troubles weren’t going away, not given Germany’s shortages of strategic metals such as tin.

Right. It’s insulting. But I don’t expect much respect from a party that pretty much has all but admitted that it doesn’t like young people voting in large numbers because they know it’s bad for their power grip.

It didn’t really matter if they’d focused more on it, the strategic materials necessary to build the engines were in short supply, which meant there weren’t enough Jumo 004 engines to put the Me-262 into production until 1944 at the earliest. Not to mention focusing on it would have drawn away materials and workers from production of aircraft that were already in service and badly needed to replace losses on the Eastern front.

‘That’s just how we roll’: Bristol Palin’s Medal of Honor fiance defends playing with an infant as gun sits feet away on table

The outspoken fiance of Bristol Palin can be seen playing with a newborn baby in a Instagram photo as a gun sits next to them on a side table.

Former Marine Dakota Meyer is holding the baby, identified as Rowan, with his gun by his side.

‘Just love the fact that there is a pistol laying on the little table behind you,’ wrote one person on the post.

‘That’s just how we roll haha,’ joked Meyer.

Practically, education of the young is only possible in schools conducted by especially qualified persons who devote themselves thereto. The calling always has been regarded as useful and honorable, essential, indeed, to the public welfare. Mere knowledge of the German language cannot reasonably be regarded as harmful. Heretofore it has been commonly looked upon as helpful and desirable. Plaintiff in error taught this language in school as part of his occupation. His right thus to teach and the right of parents to engage him so to instruct their children, we think, are within the liberty of the amendment.

That the state may do much, go very far, indeed, in order to improve the quality of its citizens, physically, mentally and morally, is clear; but the individual has certain fundamental rights which must be respected. By bringing certain people along…

Tribe served as a law clerk to Mathew Tobriner on the California Supreme Court from 1966-67 and as a law clerk to Potter Stewart of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1967-68. He joined the Harvard Law School faculty as an assistant professor in 1968, receiving tenure in 1972. Among his distinguished law students and research assistants while on the faculty at Harvard have been Barack Obama (a research assistant for two years), Chief Justice John Roberts (as a law student in his classes), and Elena Kagan (as a research assistant).[9]

428 lawhawk  Mar 20, 2015 10:05:05am

re: #413 iossarian

Tribe is well-known in legal circles for constitutional law (wrote one of the major hornbooks). He represented the losers in Bowers v. Hardwick, but ultimately prevailed in Lawrence v. Texas where he wrote an amicus brief overruling that law (and overturning Bowers).

But he’s also taken on clients like GE in opposing CERCLA (Superfund) and lost.

So, while most of his career is with liberal causes, he’ll occasionally take on a corporate client to pay the bills as it were.

As for being an icon, if you’re at HLS, you’re going to get oversized media treatment, and consideration for court appointments, including to federal appeals courts or for the Supreme Court. That would include Cass Sunstein as well.

I mention that because stuff I’ve been reading about what is now Oklahoma but was then Indian Territory during the Civil War. Most notably the Battle of Honey Springs. I should have mentioned it last week as its a great antidote to that frat boy scandal at Oklahoma U.

Spoiler: The battle’s climax was the repulse of an attack by Graybacks from Texas by the 1st Kansas Volunteer Infantry (African Descent). The rebels misheard an order for the Union 2nd Indian Home Guard to withdraw from in front of the 1st Kansas as a general order for Union withdrawal, staged a ‘pursuit’ and ran right into a devastating volley from the 1st.

You don’t hear much about Honey Springs in Texas, since the Lost Causers never wanted to talk about the time the vaunted Texans got beaten by former slaves. Honey Springs was one of the Civil War battles that put the lie to the claims of the slave holders.

They seem to think that the main motivator for transgendered people is to spy on other women in the restroom, which is insane.

How is your Friday.

It’s a bit cooler today, but promises to be a good day.

But not for everyone:
Winter makes late-season return to Northeast, rain and thunderstorms possible across Texas and Gulf Coast

Snowing here in Philadelphia and starting to get a bit sloppy.

Ran my errands already, so I’m sitting back reading, sorting photos, and drinking tea. Tuxedo Cat is busy being a force of chaos.

Just a note, but you guys all know that we were misinterpreting what Bryan Fischer said yesterday and it wasn’t any different than things we say here, right?

I think it’s time for llh to meet Stinky.

The dead thread derping and rationalizations and MBF is getting a little old.

Listened to Red Rising and am now listing to #2 in the series Golden Son .

Some interesting analogies to our stratified society.

Each “level” (determined by genetically engineer colors” has issues with seeing the very high or the very low colors as people.

Seems it works both ways.

“You really think animated GIFs is how the House Judiciary should be representing itself?”

Why would a Native American portray a white, ginger Jesus?

Because many first nations are highly religious, primarily Christian. I see Christian icons at all the first nations I visit.

re: #445 wrenchwench

If you know what a real dream catcher is, you recognize a rip-off. Could be made by a Native American and be a cultural rip-off.

What you are calling a rip-off is considered just a melding of ideas by the artists who produce them.

I’ve seen more than one Christian cross done in aboriginal beading.

re: #447 Lidane

To sell cheesy, tacky “tribal art” to stupid people.

Perhaps, but perhaps it’s what members of first nations want.

Someone who is apparently unclear with sarcasm.

Who’s in charge of storing the LGF guillotine?

Klys. She keeps the practice head on a kitchen counter. ;)

But black velvet on a dream catcher… gotta draw the line somewhere.

The black woman is so far behind that she’s not in the picture.

Asian guy had time to turn around, grab a Nikon, and shoot the field.
