Listening to Castor today reminded me of a friend of mine when we were arguing a case against each other before the Kentucky Supreme Court. He started with a folksy tale, and a Justice quickly cut him off and told him to get to the point. Castor needed someone to tell him that today.

Trump’s crackerjack legal team is having quite the day.

Sidney Powell is busy being chased by process servers.

Lin Wood is facing consequences in NY and may run into problems resulting from his bad crazy:

Trump’s impeachment team are doing precisely as well as expected: baffling with bulkshit and even Trump’s throwing a tantrum about the disastrous open.

I don’t care what the hell she’s thinking right now. Her vote will be her legacy. She’s already got a tainted legacy thanks to refusing to remove Trump after the first impeachment trial, and she’s on pace to do so again.

That says more about her and the rest of the GOP than it does Trump.

We expect this behavior from Trump. We supposedly think that GOPers in the Senate would do better (memo: they’re no better than Trump himself - they’re as corrupt and morally bankrupt).

Come across the Mississippi then, we have plenty of black bear around here. They don’t tend to cause trouble but they are over populated and get like to rummage through peoples trash. They’re most dangerous in the fall when fattening up for winter - if they smell easy food, they’ll go for it. A boy scout got mauled a couple of years back over a candy bar. But other than that, even sows with cubs are not as dangerous as browns out west.

David Schoen, who represented the Ku Klux Klan once, is concerned the Bigot Party might be offended by his religious head covering, trying to play victim, or trying to paint Democrats as anti-Semites (or all three)?

He has done extensive work on public interest and civil rights cases in the South about matters like police and prison violence and ballot access. Among his many cases, he played a significant role in a class-action lawsuit that challenged Alabama’s foster care system and led to improvements, and he represented the Ku Klux Klan in successfully challenging a law that forbade them from marching while wearing hoods and without paying a fee. The American Bar Association honored Mr. Schoen in 1995 for his volunteer legal efforts.

Reading the print edition of The Economist, they note that Donald Trump’s orgy of execution warrants is the first time in US history that the federal government executed more people than states in a particular year. (There were seven state executions in 2020 and none this year. There were sixteen federal executions in the final months of 2020 and the first weeks of 2021.)

Antivaxxers are liars, part sixty-five thousand three:

Anti-vaxxers are using a doctor’s miscarriage to claim the COVID-19 vaccine affects pregnancy — but the doctor lost her baby before getting the shot Business Insider

When Dr. Michelle Rockwell woke up Sunday morning, just a couple months after suffering a pregnancy loss, she said she saw her photos plastered on social media claiming her miscarriage was caused by a COVID-19 vaccine.

Rockwell screenshotted the circulating post, which no longer appears to be visible.

Previously, Rockwell, an OB-GYN in Tulsa, had posted about her pregnancy loss on her account, @DoctorMommyMD, which has more than 26,000 followers. Separately, she had posted about her vaccination.

But the anti-vaxx post baselessly linked the two, despite the fact that Rockwell suffered the miscarriage before she received the vaccine, she wrote in a post Monday addressing the incident and misinformation on the internet more generally.

Memories of the measles pandemic in 1962. Wicked strain left me bedridden for 3 weeks. Could barely walk to the toilet. Mom had problems getting me to eat anything until she hit on the idea of mixing fruit cocktail in cottage cheese. It hit every kid in my 2nd grade class One of the girls wound up blinded from retinal hemorrhages. One boy died from a massive cerebral hemorrhage. My temperature stayed between 102-103 for 3 weeks. Mom kept me in my bedroom with the shades pulled so it was always dark. She pulled a chair right next to my bed and she would not leave me.

Mom and Dad lost 2 daughters before I was born. Those deaths scarred them and Mom said over and over she wasn’t going to lose another child.

It took a long time to recover from that virus. So when that fucking asshole RFK Jr. shoots his mouth off about vaccines I wish someone would tell that asshole to shut the fuck up!

Redistricting will be underway in my state. As state law limits the state to forty-nine districts (despite attempts to repeal that due to population increase in the state), that means the three districts which include the Panhandle will probably lose one due to sustained population loss here.

Two of the state senators (mine and one from Gordon) want instead to sacrifice a district in southwest Nebraska because that senator is term-limited, while they are not.

Another proposal would eliminate my Unicameral district and divide it up amongst others.

Assuming my district is not eliminated, my state senator Steve Erdman would likely run for a second term (the guy I’m thinking about running against if he does).

The biggest problem with not expanding the number of state senators is as city areas grow and rural areas shrink, the rural districts get physically larger and harder to represent. The northern district in the state (district 43) is over four hundred miles long. There is a district in Lincoln which only covers about ten blocks.

The last convo I recall with an anti-vaxxer came down to how vaccines kill babies, so it was really a pro-life thing to be against vaccinations.

Braindead lefties insist on vaccinations because they like killing babies, and like to tell anti-vax babylovers what to do, because they’re anti-democracy and communists. Lefties use debunked science to support their case for vaccinations, because there are “experts” and “doctors” on YouTube that will tell you how dangerous vaccines really are. They’re the real truth-tellers.

The political manouvres are already underway. When the census numbers are in, they’ll have a better handle on which district lost the most people (the district which is Scott’s Bluff County will probably show a slight increase).

Since all the state senators involved are Republicans, they are already knives out to save their seat and metaphorically knife each other in the back.

The massive district in the north of the state is by far the most expensive district to campaign in, and very nearly flipped to the Democrats in the last election.

NEW YORK (AP) — Enrollment in Roman Catholic schools in the United States dropped 6.4% from the previous academic year amid the pandemic and economic stresses — the largest single-year decline in at least five decades, Catholic education officials reported Monday.

Among the factors were the closure or consolidation of more than 200 schools and the difficulty for many parents of paying tuition fees that average more than $5,000 for grades K-8 and more than $10,000 for secondary schools, according to the National Catholic Educational Association.

John Reyes, the NCEA’s executive director for operational vitality, said the pandemic has been an “accelerant” for longstanding challenges facing Catholic education.

Reyes said one reason for the relatively modest reduction in staff size was the use of funds from the federal Paycheck Protection Program in the spring of 2020. Without additional outside support going forward, he added, there is potential for severe staffing reductions as well as continued enrollment declines.

“I can’t say that a bounce-back is guaranteed” when the pandemic ends, Reyes said.

Mississippi says out-of-state residents ‘not welcome’ to its coronavirus vaccines (New Orleans Times-Picayune)

Last week the newspaper reported 2% of people vaccinated in Mississippi are really from Louisiana. They did an investigative report showing there are groups on social media which try to figure out where vaccines are available in any state, so their followers can go to that state. Mississippi responded to that article by tightening up vaccinations by enforcing requirements to prove you live or work in Mississippi. A link to the previous Times-Picayune article is within this one.

After news reports that Louisianans were heading to Mississippi for coronavirus vaccines, the Mississippi Department of Health said Thursday that Mississippi’s inoculations are only for people who live or work in that state.

The clarification on guidelines for out-of-state residents seeking vaccines came one day after nola.com reported that more than 5,300 Mississippi vaccines have been given to people with addresses in other states.

“If they don’t work in MS, they should not come here to get a vaccine,” Health Department spokesperson Liz Sharlot responded in an email.

“We order vaccine based on population. If you don’t meet the … criteria, you are not welcome to come over here and get a vaccine that is intended for Mississippians or those who work in MS. This is not right, and folks should not be doing it.”

Shamelessly stolen from Reddit.

Heisenberg, Schrodinger and Ohm are in a car

They get pulled over. Heisenberg is driving and the cop asks him “Do you know how fast you were going?”

“No, but I know exactly where I am” Heisenberg replies.

The cop says “You were doing 55 in a 35.” Heisenberg throws up his hands and shouts “Great! Now I’m lost!”

The cop thinks this is suspicious and orders him to pop open the trunk. He checks it out and says “Do you know you have a dead cat back here?”

“We do now, asshole!” shouts Schrodinger.

The cop moves to arrest them. Ohm resists.

That’s a keeper. It reminds me of these two bad pun math jokes:

What’s yellow and undecidable? Zorn’s lemon.

What’s purple and commutes? An Abelian grape.

The same Democratic lawmaker, back when he was on the state senate education committee 2016, refused to repeal a state law which says creationism can be taught alongside evolution in Louisiana classrooms. The education committee defeated the motion 4-2; interestingly, the motion to repeal it was brought by a Republican state senator.

Sen. Bill Cassidy defends vaccines after state lawmaker makes autism claims: ‘That’s fake news’ (Baton Rouge Advocate, April 30, 2019)

WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy firmly pushed back Tuesday against a Louisiana state lawmaker for spreading a long-debunked claim about vaccines and autism that health officials have linked to a recent spike in measles cases.

“That’s fake news that’s being said on the Senate floor,” Cassidy, a Baton Rouge Republican who is a medical doctor, said of hearing about state Sen. John Milkovich’s anti-vaccination remarks this week.

Milkovich, D-Shreveport, took to the Senate microphone on Monday during a debate over a bill related to a voluntary immunization database to launch into his broadside about vaccines, suggesting they are dangerous and can cause autism, which Cassidy and other experts say is not true.

“There is a very contentious scientific debate that’s going on right now in America and has been for decades,” Milkovich said. “Many are saying that these vaccinations pose danger.”

“For example, when (I was) growing up autism did not exist,” he continued.

He went on to claim that tissue from aborted fetuses is used to make vaccines and that vaccines contain dangerous neurotoxins.

Caution for disgusting descriptions of the allegations.

Former Trump and GOP Aide Charged With Distributing Child Porn (Daily Beast)

Hey DB? It’s not “child porn.” It’s child exploitation material. Pornography is consensual and legal.

A former digital strategist for the Senate Republican Conference, who also worked for pro-life groups and designed social media ads for Donald Trump’s re-election campaign, has been charged with distributing child pornography.

D.C. Metropolitan Police arrested Ruben A. Verastigui on Friday after an investigation revealed he allegedly “distributed, received, and possessed images of child pornography” between March 2020 and February 2021. Jared Holt, resident fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Lab, first reported Verastigui’s arrest on Twitter.

Verastigui, who posted a photo of himself at the White House just two months ago, worked for the Senate Republican Conference until July 2020, according to his LinkedIn. The investigation into his alleged offenses took place while he was still working for the GOP.

He had been working as a communications manager for a non-profit called Citizens for Responsible Energy Solutions until Saturday. A spokesperson for the non-profit said: “The details of the allegations against Mr. Verastigui are tragic and shocking. He is no longer employed by the organization and we are prepared to fully cooperate with law enforcement requests in this matter to any extent needed.”

The Daily Beast was unable to reach Verastigui and a family member didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Christian nationalists at work in the North Dakota state legislature. They don’t say which of the three versions of the Ten Commandments would be the one required to be displayed in every public school in the state.

A BILL for an Act to create and enact a new section to chapter 15.1‑09 and two new subsections to section 15.1‑09‑33 of the North Dakota Century Code, relating to school board authority regarding the posting of the ten commandments and the recitation of the pledge of allegiance.

By linking both the Pledge of Allegiance and the mandate to display the Ten Commandments (some version) in schools, the Republicans behind this can accuse opponents of being both anti-Christian and anti-patriotic.

It passed the Senate 34-13 and has been passed to the House. This thing is clipping right along; that only took a week from its introduction in the Senate.

This is the third attempt to get a bill across the legislature that would prohibit judges from shielding the religious faith (or lack thereof) of plaintiffs in church/state separation cases.

Last time around, numerous atheists and Jews testified in the state legislature that the purpose of this bill is to get them killed by Christians, when Christians try to unconstitutionally insert religious views into state law.

Iran cleric: People who are vaccinated for COVID have ‘become homosexuals’ (Jerusalem Post)

An Iranian regime cleric in the holy city of Qom on Tuesday issued a homophobic rant against people vaccinated for COVID-19, claiming that they become gay after receiving the vaccine.

Ayatollah Abbas Tabrizian wrote on his Telegram social-media platform: “Don’t go near those who have had the COVID vaccine. They have become homosexuals.”

The radical Islamist has nearly 210,000 followers on his Telegram account.

Tabrizian has a history of derogatory opinions about Western medicine. Last year, a video showed him burning Harrison’s Manual of Medicine and saying that “Islamic medicine” had made such books “irrelevant,” according to an article on the website of Radio Farda, the Iranian branch of the US-funded Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty broadcast service.

Since Iran executes people for being gay, and this guy is an influential cleric, the undercurrent of the message is “if you get vaccinated, you can be executed.”

I recall that when Dubya came out in favor of posting the Ten Commandments in public buildings, some reporter (obviously a smart-ass with a few semesters of comparative religion under his belt) asked him which translation should be used.

“The standard one,” answered Bush without any further comment.

I assume that in his pea brain, that meant the King James version with all the Thou Shalt Nots as it is more authoritative and God-like.

electoral-vote.com sums it up nicely

And then there is the way not to do it. Donald Trump’s lawyers went second and, even allowing for the challenges they faced (erratic client, limited time to prepare, tough argument to make), their presentation was an absolute train wreck. Actually, train wreck isn’t quite right. It was more like 30 trains, all of them converging on the same spot at the same time, and all of them carrying loads of gasoline, dynamite, gunpowder, and Zippo lighters

My new explanation of the tRump trial I came up with yesterday while discussing it with a neighbor while clearing snow from sidewalk. He is of the thought that we should not be trying tRump after he has left office, that it will do no good (at least he isn’t arguing that he wasn’t already impeached before he left office). I told him to look at it this way:

Child molester has been convicted of child molestation. We are now in the penalty part of that conviction. We now have to decide if we should ban that child molester from ever working in a child daycare center for the rest of their lives.

It almost looked like he was thinking about that as we parted ways to finish up our outdoor tasks and get back into the warmth of our houses.

Stupid, entitled-ass white people…

Now that the COVID-19 vaccine is being rolled out, our clinic is facing another unexpected reality: mobs of angry vaccine chasers.

Our clinics serve more than 100,000 people, most of whom are Latino and Black, and many of whom are extremely low income. We are the largest COVID-19 vaccine provider in South L.A., and we have provided more than 20,000 vaccines over the past three weeks to health care workers and seniors—mostly people of color—from the area. Despite the fact that California is still in Phase 1B of vaccine distribution, in which largely only health care workers and seniors are qualified to receive it, every day, hundreds of mostly white, unqualified Westside residents are flooding our clinics.

They line up with lawn chairs and laptops before the vaccine clinic is even open. They demand to use our bathrooms, and their presence blocks seniors and health care workers from easily accessing our vaccine clinics. They heckle and intimidate our staff members, all of whom are Latino and/or Black. They threaten to “call the newspapers” because we won’t let them cut the line. One man even spit at a security guard who wouldn’t let him cut in front of an 82-year-old Black woman who had an appointment.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve been forced to double the number of security staff to manage the crowds. I suspect that stories of providers throwing vaccines away or doses going to people who are in the right place at the right time are to blame for all these people showing up. But our clinics never trash vaccines or give them out to lucky bystanders. We have a pool of local residents, mostly seniors, whom we would bring in if there were no-shows or leftover doses.

It’s not just physical mobs. These young white people have also figured out how to outsmart California’s vaccine appointment software. The system, which is clunky and inefficient, has a loophole that allows non-health care workers and nonseniors to make appointments by clicking “Other” when asked about their age and profession. They go onto the system as soon as the appointments are posted and book them up—there’s no way right now to automatically screen these people out. When health care workers finally get home from working all day and try to schedule an appointment, the slots are often all full.

The other week, several hundred first-shot appointments were made by self-identified white, non-health care workers for our clinics alone, preventing hundreds of qualified health care workers and seniors from accessing appointments. Luckily we caught it before the vaccine clinic operations began, since we noticed many appointments checked “Other” were accompanied with birthdates that made it clear they were not seniors. But we had to spend hours and hours of staff time calling to verify the patients’ information before canceling their appointments and replacing them with seniors who were on waitlists. The website clearly needs to be fixed, but we’ve been alarmed at the selfishness that has seeped through the cracks in the system.

Using all 16 hours means 16 hours of testimony showing just how fucked up Trumpworld and the GOP are and how they enabled insurrection and the coup attempt that failed but for a handful of Capitol Police standing their ground against the seditious fuckers Trump sicced on the Capitol to thwart the confirmation of the election results.

Mark Cuban stops playing National Anthem at Mavericks games. He’s getting flack for this, but the entire concept of playing the anthem has had a long and tortured history. It started in Chicago after a bombing there and to commemorate the death of 100,000 American troops in WWI. A few teams quit playing the anthem for a period, but relented and began playing it again.

What I find more objectionable is the militarization of the anthem and pre-game rituals, like the flybys.

Before International soccer matches, they have the teams out and play each other’s national anthems. Somebody must’ve seen that and said it was a good idea for the NFL, who used to wait until afterwards to send the teams out onto the field…one of those details that gets left out of any discussion of the National Anthem at US sporting events.

So using that logic from them. Biden could go to the supreme court chambers right now, shoot all the conservative judges, put forth new liberal ones to replace them, threaten to kill all repuke senators that refuse to vote them in, and all would be ‘legal’ since he is president. And even after he is out of office he will be immune from prosecution for those murders.

If you think that’s bad, realize that the US has lost nuclear weapons over the years, including off Charleston/Savannah in the Tybee Island incident. The US never recovered that nuclear weapon. When that incident occurred, the US came very close to nuking the area between those two cities.

I have heard little mention of Trump’s statement “I’ll be with you!” when he exhorted the protestors to march on the Capitol.

There is no justification for him to make such a statement at that time and place, or in his capacity as President

Period.

Nojay UK  Feb 10, 2021 • 8:45:46am

Just back from getting vaccinated against COVID-19 here in Edinburgh, Scotland as the Scottish NHS is now offering the vaccine to folks over 65. The vaccination centre was about half a click from my front door, uphill both ways through the snow. I got the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine, I can expect an appointment for another dose within the next twelve weeks.

The centre wasn’t busy but the weather was not that nice and I expect they had a number of cancellations because people couldn’t make it to the city centre. I was in and out almost before my scheduled appointment time, I’d estimate five minutes from arrival to getting the vaccine and then I waited around for another ten minutes afterwards just in case. My upper arm is slightly sore, I obviously notice it because that’s where I was injected but no other adverse effects yet. I’m well stocked up with paracetamol just in case.

Oh, it was free, no co-pay, no credit cards or insurance or other bullshit.

you are not getting covid walking outdoors, but I understand the healthy respect for the virus. Things that I do and don’t worry about: going to the supermarket; going into a store to purchase something or look around; walking around outdoors; talking to neighbors outdoors, while we are separated by six to ten feet of distance. Things I would never dream of doing: going into a restaurant to eat. I teach 17 and 18 students in a class where that is the max safe rating, and for some reason that also doesn’t concern me.
