A study by Oregon researchers finds that people fully vaccinated against COVID-19 who have a breakthrough infection end up with what the authors call “super immunity.”

They caution the vaccinated should not seek COVID-19 infection, but the “hybrid immunity” offers some solace for those who catch one despite having been vaccinated.

re: #1 Dangerman

There is some information being spread online claiming that getting vaccinated after having recovered from COVID-19 is dangerous because it could overstimulate the immune system.

“That’s completely made up, it’s total rubbish,” said Crotty. “It was tested in all the vaccine trials. Getting vaccinated after COVID-19 exposure is totally safe.”

Getting a booster is still safer than getting COVID-19, said Dr. Gregory Poland, director of the Mayo Clinic’s Vaccine Research Group, particularly for those at risk for severe disease, including those over 70, people with diabetes and those with weakened immune systems.

“Best is getting three doses of an mRNA vaccine and never getting infected. Complications, including long COVID and transmission to others, represent a risk even in that scenario,” Poland said.

He offered a hierarchy of safety:

Best scenario: Fully vaccinated and boosted, no infection upon exposure
Next best: Fully vaccinated, boosted and asymptomatic or mild disease upon exposure/infection
Next best: Fully vaccinated, boosted, moderate disease and attendant complication risks upon infection
Worse: not fully vaccinated or boosted and risk severe disease/death and its risks upon infection

CL’d;

re: #203 austin_blue

And this is where I throw up my hands and yell a lot.

If you have a finite resource (Only 20 Bitcoin out of a fixed figure of 14,000 remain!), you turn into the World Worm eating its own tail, spending $50,000 to acquire a $40,000 asset. And then what? The asset has limited its own growth and can’t be worth more than what it was worth on the day the last of a self-limited 14,000 has been mined.

Granted, I am a bear of very little brain, but it makes my head hurt.

re: #206 EPR-radar

Bitcoin speculators are counting on that bolded part being false, which it basically is. Asset values in speculative bubbles are irrational, and the whole point of bitcoin is that its originators (who probably still hold some ridiculously large fraction of all bitcoin) intend to be the early winners in a bitcoin bubble they intend to cash out of in time.

Ok, I get what you are saying, but what you are describing is a complex Ponzi scheme controlled by the holder’s of the 14,000 original Bitcoin, who will make a new “issue” of not-Bitcoin, let’s call it Botcoin, that will be a limited issue of 28,000 that will cost $70,000 per unit to acquire.

I mean, it’s a great way to launder your drug money and increase your profit if you mined your Bitcoin at $20,000 per unit, because Bitcoin will rise to $70,000 to reflect the new normal of Botcoin.

Brilliant!

Grew up with dogs, chose cats an adult. I was the oldest of five kids and we had seven people loving up our dogs. The work was spread out. As a young adult, there was just me, and cats and I reached an accommodation. This continued after my marriage to She Who Must Be Obeyed.

When I moved out on my own, I was more used to cats than dogs; I had had a dog when I was young, but after he was dognapped, it was all cats for family pets. As a lonely bachelor, Mrs. Fish helped me find a feline overlord to rule my house, until she moved in with her own cat after we married. To say the cat life agrees with me would be an understatement.

Alas, we have only one; Moonshine, our outdoor cat, has outlived both Angel (aka Basement Cat, Mrs. Fish’s long-haired black feline) and Rascal (aka Moral Grey Area Cat, my grey/white short-haired tuxedo cat). We’re still thinking about what we might do once Moonshine inevitably kicks the bucket.

The first couple of weeks with the cats together were… interesting. Even worse was when we introduced the third cat into the mix; she was a rescue, but more importantly, she was female, and unspayed, and Mrs. Fish’s cat was female, and unspayed. And what we didn’t know was that this would cause (literal) pissing matches between the three cats. So Moonshine wound up outside, where we fed her and cared for her as best we could. We almost abandoned her, but I couldn’t do it; I was too soft and too attached to her. I told Mrs. Fish that we’d build her an outdoor house at our house and keep her there. And to her credit, it worked out great for both of us; we got to keep our kitteh, and she got food, shelter, and a chance to hunt a whole bunch of wild critters.

Among the many faults of this brain-dead tweet by Yglesias, there’s the choice idiocy of equating substance (i.e., Trump going nuts on some culture war issues) to shadow (i.e., the supposedly changed GOP ‘posture’ on gays and theocracy).

The reality of our environmental situation is way way worse than it should be but not close to what fatalistic gen-z kids who are screaming at old people about having no future think it is.

Not until the frozen methane is released, anyway. We’ve seen that the voters who support the people who fight against stopping warming can’t even smarten up in the face of a pandemic that’s killing them, so I’m not optimistic. Gen-Z may not have no future, but they have a future on a planet that is not the paradise that we enjoy today.

Honestly, it’s looking pretty bleak. Climate change may or may not be a civilization ender, with the odds of a worst case outcome increasing with every year of pitiful to nonexistent international response.

But climate change + the resulting mass displacement and/or resource wars is going to get damn ugly. Especially if that plays out while the 21st century is repeating the 20th century’s worldwide infatuation with fascism.

Gen Z is rightly upset because they’ve noticed that the gerontocracy isn’t doing anything to mitigate the situation while test-marketing their rationales for why the future will require Malthusian solutions.

They’re not scared about where we are relative to dystopian imaginings, they’re scared because they’re trying to extrapolate how bad the problem will be as year after year of pettifogging slips by and the people with power—who are already reaching for the flashing red “eugenics” button—acquire more and more capital that they will never allow to be harnessed for the general good.

They’ve also noticed that the current gerontocracy keeps using them as scapegoats: something fucks up…usually because capitalism broke its keel…and it’s”the millennials killed X.” So part of that climate fear is the high likelihood that rich old people—or their undead legacy entities in the form of foundations, PACs, etc—are going to leave them holding the bag. Which is a rational fear, since we just watched during the pandemic as the people with power and money covered their own asses while suggesting it was just fine if the disease ripped through young people who were supposed to just keep working to create value that mostly flowed to old people.

I never cease to be amazed at the gulf between what, practically, is good for a functioning military and the body-dysmorphic hash of insecure masculinity that people that never think about soldiers as people imagine war-fighting to be.

I really wish I could dismiss the latter as funny, but it’s not…you can build an army of fanatics by permanently fucking up a bunch of men. It’s what the Japanese did to construct their Imperial Army…contrary to the propaganda, those guys weren’t all blind zealots: there was this mix of people that enjoyed the license granted but also lots of men who were frightened and shell-shocked and felt trapped by a culture that expected them to exist only to kill and die.

There’s this stratum of people who will never take these risks, but will always feel entitled to dictate the terms of their lesser’s direct experience: a hypothetical soldier is an exultant figure of heroic violence, and any solider that remains human is a failure because they’re not performing their utility as violence-doer. Reactionaries like war criminals because that’s their understanding of conflict, and thus of soldiering: there should be a class of people that can do any kind of harm in service of the status quo.

(Note: I am thinking of Shigeru Mizuki, WW2 vet and cartoonist who wrote some of the most open and sharp criticisms of Showa Japan. That part of his work—where he explicitly points out the system that hurt normal men and elevated the psychopaths that felt no regret—still isn’t a topic of discussion in modern Japan. Contrast his reflection on war—the sense of futility, the close observation of the madness of those that could disassociate themselves—with the triumphal posture of Japanese right-wingers who valorize militarism. This is a universal, recurring thing: the semiotics of soldier narratives are so valued that the lived experience of soldiers is viewed as weakness.)

MICHIGAN (WPBN/WGTU) — The Great Lakes is no stranger to storms with strong gale force winds.

The most notable was back in 1975 when the SS Edmund Fitzgerald sank in Lake Superior.

So how historic is the storm that hit Michigan on December 16, 2021 and what was the driving force behind it?

The low-pressure system started out west on Wednesday dropping snow and rain before rapidly deepening in pressure.

As it moved through the Central Plains, it intensified and initiate severe weather and thunderstorms before reaching Michigan.

As pressure lowers, winds at the surface increase significantly.

This is why Traverse City received some of the strongest gusts clocking in at 70 miles per hour at Cherry Capital Airport at 6 a.m.

63 miles per hours winds were recorded at Cathro near Alpena and Mackinaw City.

To compare, the low pressure close to the Great Lakes reached an impressive 975 millibars Thursday morning which is equivalent to the Edmund Fitzgerald storm - which recorded a pressure of 980 millibars almost 50 years ago.

Not only were the pressure and winds impressive, northern Michigan also broke record high temperatures for December 16.

Six different areas - Sault Ste. Marie, Alpena, Houghton Lake, Pellston, Gaylord and Traverse City - saw highs in the 50s and 60s.

Traverse City reached its all-time record high for December at 66 degrees.

re: #71 The Ghost of a Flea

What unifies my comments tonight is:

Reactionaries and fascists assert that cruelty is necessary without and within the group to ensure survival…but they only believe in punching down. The in group exists to hammer down all out group inferiors, but the in group is still tiered and there is a class above enforcement. Which is why we constantly see wealthy men with very little experience of suffering feeling entitled to dictate what harm others deserve while seeing no contradiction in how tenderly they tend their sense of offense.

Both war and climate crisis are processed through this base assumption, and the result is the conclusion we’re seeing played out: society should just accept that their betters will dictate the terms of everyone’s survival, and the suggestion that anyone designated out-group is a person is an attack on in group.

That said, I’m kind of proud of myself for figuring out a solution to a very low level but annoying problem I was having with intermittent packet drops. While it generally did not affect, say, writing emails or updating our service management software at work, it was causing frequent issues with the dead man walking known as Skype for Business. I kept rebooting and/or resetting my modem, turning off and on my router, taking down the entire setup for hours (after work) just to get a reset and nada. Yesterday, towards the end of the day and after a series of drops that interrupted my ability to get through a Skype call, it occurred to me that maybe my router needed a firmware update. So I logged into the router on my MacBook and a firmware upgrade was in order. I got the upgrade installed and et voila, I haven’t experienced any packet drops in over 24 hours. I have an Internet Relay Chat client that is super-sensitive to connectivity (but not as sensitive as Skype) and it’s been rock-solid.

Vicuña is one of the rarest fibers in the world, and so incredibly expensive. A one ounce (28 gram) ball measuring 217.41 yards (198.79 meters) of lace weight yarn is $300. The vendor also sells qiviut (Alaskan musk ox) yarn (same put up) for $150.00. Pure bison is $64.00.

And what can you make with a ball of this yarn? One small scarf or a hat or a neck cowl. Or you could just sit there and fondle the fiber of the Inca emperors.

Your points are very well taken. And Tucker is certainly a chicken hawk par excellence.

My only quibble is that while it’s true that the Soviets had a woman in space in 1963, years before we were serious about it, that was a publicity stunt. Not that we don’t engage in publicity stunts too, but per Wiki, as of December 2019, of the 65 female spacefarers, 50 were from the United States and only 4 from Russia.

Generally I look at what I can control and what I cannot control.

I can control where I go, how long I stay there, and why I go. I can control that I wear a mask. I can control that I got vaccinated and also the booster. I can also control how long I stay around places where people are acting willfully stupidly.

I cannot control other people’s behavior. Particularly when they are acting willfully stupidly. Nor is it likely that I will be able to successfully convince people that they are acting willfully stupidly.

Generally my motto has been “Why would I want to spend lots of ‘quality time’ around assholes?” It’s the same for aggressive drivers, road rage types and general jerks as well.

Another way to look at it is that there is an infinite supply of assholes in this world. And a very limited supply of me.

Haven’t seen one of those in years. They were never any good as knives - fighting or utility - but they had that bad boy reputation.

That was my experience as well.

They are only designed to stab. (Well, more likely, to poke at things.)

They are not very good for cutting/slicing. And certainly cannot chop.

Plus the blade is so thin and narrow that it is fragile. And most of them are so cheaply constructed that the connection between the blade and the handle usually fails.

But yes, they do look cool to lots of novices.

I struggle with that. I bought a bike for my granddaughter and got the wrong size. Went to return it and there was a young woman in line behind me who removed her mask and was crowding me. I kept trying to keep at least 6 feet between us but she would move forward every time I stepped away.

Since I have several family members who are immunocomprised I wanted to yell at her.

I had the choice of confronting her or biting my tongue. Since I was wearing an N95 mask, I bit my tongue. But I’m so done with the selfish assholes who think they are special.

Oh it has been a week. Went to my sectional chorus practice last night (we go to a couple of different houses) only to find out that one of the gals that lives there was exposed to covid. She’s had covid and has the shots, but it was like OK BYE for me because I will not survive even a mild bout.

Worried with Omicron, that we will not be finishing this season with a performance. Damn it. I really don’t think we can gather much longer, even fully vaxxed.

Anyway, today I find out that my mom and sibling won’t be going to my Aunt’s house for Christmas (something that they’ve done for about 20 years or so) because my cousin’s child is anti-vax.

Dude and I will not be traveling anywhere because it just isn’t safe.

Merry f’ing Christmas.

Please be careful folks. This version of the virus really isn’t playing at all.

So hard to know what’s safe these days.

December in Chicago is generally not a time for outdoor dining (temperatures did reach 60 on Wednesday, but returned to normal mid-30’s today). A girlfriend (vaccinated and boosted) invited me to join her at the Hackney’s in Glenview. The restaurant has individual enclosed plastic domes, each with a single table able to seat parties of up to 6, 2 heaters, and blankets on each chair. The staff are all masked. I figured that would be totally safe since it was only the two of us. We had a very nice meal (well as nice as you are going to get in a hamburger joint — not exactly upscale dining).

My sister, however, was concerned because of my exposure to my friend in an enclosed area and expressed reluctance to get together indoors with me. Here I was thinking I was being careful — but, yes, I was really exposing myself to all my friend’s acquaintances too. Sigh.

Hello everyone.

I’m visiting my family in the States for the first time since the start of the global pandemic. In my personal experience, compliance with mask mandates in the Tokyo metropolitan area is around 99.999999 percent.

But here in Snohomish County in Washington state, I see people without masks everytime I go into a store.

It genuinely freaks me out. I want to attack them. May I ask how you folks cope with this?

I lived in Snohomish County for 8 years. Then I moved to New Mexico for 25 years. This was not a coping tactic, but it was good. By almost completely random chance, we now live in a town in Oregon with very good compliance. We moved here just before the pandemic. Most of my workplace encounters with maskless customers are with people my age and older who apologize for their forgetfulness. My joke, ‘Another couple of years, and it will be automatic,’ still isn’t funny. It may be less funny.

I don’t know how I would handle living in a less compliant area. Take care.

Indoor masking has been mandated all along in my area, and has just returned statewide. Certification of vaccination is required for indoor dining. I don’t hear any complaints about it, either. I worry about all the (sane) people who are stuck in areas that don’t take proper precautions.

Worth saying that while Trump went nuts on a couple of culture war issues, he also significantly moderated the GOP posture on gay rights and generally toned down the religiosity.

granted, he does not seem to care much one way or another about gays or gay rights, which means he was happy to let others in his party trample all over them

They always point to the Israeli armed forces as an example of a powerful fighting force but ignore that it’s been fully integrated since forever, including as far as I know anyway, LGBTQ+. I’m reasonably sure the PLA is too (maybe not so much LGBTQ+, but definitely women in combat roles). The Soviets had women as fighter pilots when we were still hmmming and hawwing about allowing black men into that job. The Soviets also had women Cosmonauts in orbit by 1963. We didn’t do that until 1983.

But no Cucker Tarlson, tell me about how we need only manly Aryan Viking Berzerkers or we are weak? Mr frozen food trust fund baby who wore bow ties way past the expiration date, please tell me about masculinity.

Holiday season is a time when expats tend to get a bit nostalgic and homesick, but aside from a fringe element of radical anti-vaxers/maskers, most Germans have no problem with masking in public in enclosed places.

It is a bigger percentage of the budget for people who live in rural areas and have to drive long distances to get anywhere, but then again, Biden is not popular in most of those areas to begin with.

Right now, Germans are paying around €1.60 per liter, so lessee, at current exchange rate of €1 = $1.12
= $1.79 per liter times 3.785 liters per gallon = $ 6.78 per gallon.

America would go to war before it would pay that much…

Even as the world panics over the rapid spread of the Omicron variant of COVID-19, the health ministry in South Africa has delivered some encouraging news. On Friday, South Africa’s Minister of Health Joe Phaahla said that hospitalizations are down with Omicron cases compared to previous waves like the deadly Delta surge, and that people in the hospital rarely need oxygen and are less likely to die from the disease.

Phaahla told reporters that the country’s hospital admission rate of COVID-19 patients “fell 90 percent in the second week of the current infection wave driven by the Omicron variant” as compared to the second week of the Delta wave. Boiling down the good-for-a-global-pandemic news further, he said that only 1.7 percent of all Omicron cases are being hospitalized, compared to 19 percent of Delta cases earlier in the year.

We’ll hope that Omicron is the benign yet highly contagious version that stamps out all other varieties of the virus, and only evolves towards further mildness, because the red states will only adopt policies to promote, and not suppress, its spread.

Necklaces and accessories claiming to “protect” people from 5G mobile networks have been found to be radioactive.

The Dutch authority for nuclear safety and radiation protection (ANVS) issued a warning about ten products it found gave off harmful ionising radiation.

It urged people not to use the products, which could cause harm with long-term wear.

There is no evidence that 5G networks are harmful to health.

The products identified included an “Energy Armor” sleeping mask, bracelet and necklace.

A bracelet for children, branded Magnetix Wellness, was also found to be emitting radiation.

“Don’t wear it any more, put it away safely and wait for the return instructions,” the ANVS said in a statement.

“The sellers in the Netherlands known to the ANVS have been told that the sale is prohibited and must be stopped immediately, and that they must inform their customers about this.”

Don’t know, but it is well into 6 figures. I expect that at least a few of them will eventually take revenge on the ringleaders. I wonder if that has occurred to Tucker, Lumpy, and RFK Jr.?
Sure they know that most of the victims’ loved ones will just go right along praising Jesus and hating Dems, but when you kill hundreds of thousands, the small percentage of bereaved relatives who see cause and effect clearly will still be a large number.

Kenyon Wilson is the associate head of performing arts at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and decided to put an Easter egg in the syllabus for his music seminar class this past semester.

The hint read: “Thus (free to the first who claims; locker one hundred forty-seven; combination fifteen, twenty-five, thirty-five), students may be ineligible to make up classes and …”

This would have led students to a locker that contained a $50 bill, free to the first student to claim it.

But at the end of the semester, when he went to check the locker, the bill was still there

It’s alright. We probably actually already do pay close to that. Our tax dollars go to “subsidize” the fossil fuel industry plus the charge at the pump. So it is possible we “pay” that much or close to it, just not directly at the pump.

We spend about 9 Billion dollars a year on fossil fuel subsidies and use about 123 billion gallons of gas a year so that is about $.07 per gallon. Of that 9 billion only about 4 billion goes to petroleum so it is really less than that.

Now if you take into account the hidden costs of fossil fuels in climate change and health impacts of pollution you may be right, but then other countries are paying those costs too on top of high gas prices.

European countries with much higher gasoline prices have high taxes on the fuel — here in the UK petrol currently costs about $7 a US gallon. There’s Vehicle Fuel Duty of about $2.80 a US gallon and then a 20% VAT charge on the final price. The idea is that car owners in the UK are well-off and can afford to pay more tax for the privilege of driving. Taxes and duties aren’t ring-fenced for specific purposes in the UK which does help.

Some fuel purchasers are exempt from the VFD, like farmers who can buy diesel a lot cheaper but they can’t use it for road vehicles. Boat-owners are another such group who can buy tax-free fuel.

An important difference between the US and every European country (UK included) is that they have real public transportation and train service. We don’t. Amtrak barely exists and trying to get even from one side of a large city to another without your own car is hellish.

On the other hand, when I was in the army, I could take the train from Bad Windsheim to Munich, use the busses and trams all weekend and get back on time for Monday formation on the train for pennies. Much more difficult and expensive in Madison Wisconsin.

As I understand it, the ‘guest’ is a performative ‘conservative’ talk show ‘personality’. He views himself as an entertainer, not as a thinker or a truth teller.

Statements like those made about the military are intended as attention seeking emotion buttons. And are fundamentally non-serious.

That they show a contempt for the actual military, the mission the military performs, and the society that the military comes from is very clear. This is part of the “burn society to the ground” attitude propagated by Bannon.

I do not know the cure for this level of destructiveness.

So a friend went to Florida for a family gathering. “Oh its so much beter there, people barely masking, no fear, no homeless encampments I could see, no litter…”

So I showed him how Florida death rates are at a 57% higher rate than California. And is 10th in homeless. He goes on about how people are “fleeing California”.

So a thought crossed my mind and I put it to him

“Whats the difference between California wine and Florida wine?”

California wine is a world respected beverage.

Florida “wine” is an anti vaxxer with a MAGA hat and a beat up truck.
