Not only who owns them, but who they side with. And with Nazis, you don’t get to be “Nazi adjacent”, you’re either a fucking Nazi or you’re not. There’s no middle ground.

Sorry, my carry over from the last thread failed. You put up “All of this has happened before, and all of it will happen again.” This song by Information Society includes a woman saying “All of this has happened before, and it will all happen again.” They were an electronic band, and used a lot of samples, and so that line repeats a number of times.

So, is it a “Groundhog”, a “Woodchuck”, or a “Whistle Pig” where you live?

Hack was a good album, and included the song “Mirrorshades” an homage to Neuromancer.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said the wide availability of highly effective vaccines means the U.S. mentality needs to evolve, Politico reports.

Said McConnell: “It’s time for the state of emergency to wind down… What exactly are we doing here? Where are the goalposts? What’s the end game?

The goalposts? 80% fully vaccinated (3 shots). You make that happen, Mitch, and we can declare the emergency over.

So my county’s idiot sheriff, who was arrested and sentenced to 2 years’ probation for a drunk driving incident, just announced he is not running for re-election. (Link: KARE 11, a local news site; international visitors may have difficulty accessing it.) If you’re wondering if that means we’ll elect less of a blithering idiot, that’s not as unlikely as it may sound; the City of Minneapolis vote will help that side of the equation.

As far as I’m aware, they reduce the likelihood of transmission FROM an infected individual by an amount that is yet to be determined, but is at least slightly greater than zero; and they do an incredibly good job of preventing serious damage, death, or long-term consequences. At that point, if we can get enough people fully vaccinated, to where it is universally true in the United States that you are more likely to be vaccinated than unvaccinated in an area, then I would feel safe in saying, “OK, still take reasonable precautions, but we’re going to transition to this thing being endemic.”

And if enough people had brains enough to get vaccinated, omicron wouldn’t have had such a fertile field from which to explode.

That is too nuanced and too much of a mouthful. The only phrases that people could get their heads around were “It’s a hoax” or “It’s no worse than the flu!” or “Let’s go, Brandon!”

Additionally, additionally

- People in his state, and many others, have been acting like there was no pandemic for ages.
- There’s no federal mask mandate, no general vaccine mandate, virtually no government restrictions
- most schools are in person, vaccine mandates are shut down, stores are open and people can come and go, major sports are and concerts are going on with full stadiums … what is it we need to change to be “normal”?

Ps Mitch, If, as you suggest, a new disease appeared and it killed 2000+ people a day without the past two years of getting used to that, we would freak the fuck out again.

Zucker’s stunning announcement came less than two months after he fired prime time anchor Chris Cuomo for improperly advising his brother, then-New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, about how to address sexual misconduct allegations.

“As part of the investigation into Chris Cuomo’s tenure at CNN, I was asked about a consensual relationship with my closest colleague, someone I have worked with for more than 20 years,” Zucker told employees in a memo. “I acknowledged the relationship evolved in recent years. I was required to disclose it when it began but I didn’t. I was wrong. As a result, I am resigning today.”

my understanding from some recent article was that the booster bumped resistance to omicron back up to what it was against covid after the second shot, by increasing antibodies something like 24 fold over the two shot folks who weren’t boosted six months out. Even my lady barber, who had to skip the booster on doctor’s orders after the second dose caused her some pretty nasty heart palpitations, go the omicron variant but found it was just several days of feeling like she had a sinus infection that wasn’t really all that terrible. I felt very bad for her, because as right-wing as everybody in that shop is, she was trying to do the right thing and the vaccine did apparently mess with her, but at least that second shot gave her some protection that likely paid off in the end.

Jeff Bezos is involved in a little kerfuffle with the Dutch. Specifically, he is seeking their approval to temporarily dismantle an over 100 year-old bridge so he can get his new Yacht out to sea. The masts on the thing are too big to clear the bridge. Bezos is willing to fund the dismantling and reconstruction of the bridge himself.

An article I was reading on this situation also includes the following:

Rumors of the Amazon founder’s involvement with the boat started with Brad Stone’s 2021 book about the founder called Amazon Unbound, first excerpted in Bloomberg Businessweek. In addition to the 127-meter behemoth, Stone claimed Bezos also commissioned a smaller “support yacht,” that supposedly comes equipped with its own helipad. In related mindless spending efforts, Bezos has also reportedly invested $42 million dollars into a 500-foot tall mechanical clock capable of running for 10 thousand years.

But Bezos isn’t the only billionaire busting out cash for luxury yachts. While the global economies crawled back from a year of lockdowns and millions of Americans struggled to make due on government relief efforts, yacht sales were booming. Superyachts had a banner year in 2021, with a total of 887 sold worldwide according to a report from maritime data firm VesselsValue, viewed by Bloomberg. That marks a 77% increase in sales from a year prior and more than double the yachts sold in 2019.

According to that same report, an unprecedented pandemic era wealth gain among the world’s richest cohort and renewed demand for semi-isolated activities were partly the reason for the surge in yacht sales. Lonely billionaires needed something to spend all that new capital on.

Now though, it appears all that yacht demand has outpaced supply. Recent supply chain disruptions tacked on alongside the ships’ inherently long build times, means the hefty prices may swell even larger, Bloomberg notes.

The rest of us can enjoy our table scraps, I guess.

FWIW, my SOP with my cast iron stuff is to after use, brush out with hot water (as hot as the tap can deliver), then put on stove on low heat, enough to dry it out but not burn the oil.
Treat with oil — minimal amount, just enough to allow for a thin coat — using kitchen paper towel, then let it be on heat for a bit to let it soak in.
Let cool down.
Put into storage.

I would imagine the process is similar with carbon steel.

EDIT: My oil of choice is rapeseed oil.

This is an interesting legal issue to see who would be liable for a ticket in this case. However, the big issue here is that Tesla’s autonomous driving system is massively underdesigned, has an intervention rate about 1000 times higher than Waymo as far as I can see, and should never ever ever have been released to the public.

FWIW, Francis Lam on NPR’s “Splendid Table” had a guest cook on the program a month or so ago who doesn’t use a wok to stir fry on western stoves.

The guest felt that unless you had a Chinese stove, a steel frying pan at a high temperature was a better fit for a western stove, gas or electric.

re: #118 Backwoods_Sleuth

I had a roomie at the co-op who was raped outside her fancy pants dorm and she got pregnant. She was (then) a Good Catholic Girl, so she did not get an abortion but instead put her daughter up for adoption. It completely FUCKED HER UP. This being the first half of the 1980s, these adoption “services” still basically treated women like containers and she got no counseling either pre or post-birth. I don’t know what happened to her after she married a gay Baptist preacher, because yeah, the rape completely messed up her view of sex.

And those people who say that adoption is an option have never had a cousin who was put up for adoption ask you if their schizophrenic mother would have been a better (single) parent than the physically and mentally abusive married couple who adopted her. I was completely speechless. I mean, I know what it’s like to have a schizophrenic parent but what can I say? It probably would have been ugly, but I don’t know.

And those are the reasons I give whenever someone says that adoption is an option. Oh, and this “theology” is utter and complete horseshit. So tired of this.

Years ago, in one of my first Driver’s Ed lessons, I ran a stop sign in the sense that I slowed down to a crawl, looked both ways, saw it was clear and then kept going. My instructor immediately slammed on the brakes and scolded me for not stopping saying “that sign is not a suggestion”.

The funny thing is, I rolled the stop because I’d seen my dad and my grandfather do that all the time for years while riding with them and just kind of assumed you didn’t actually have to stop all the way when you got to a stop sign, so it didn’t occur to me that I might be doing something wrong during my driving lesson.

This is known as a “rolling” or “California” stop. Waaaay back in the Dark Ages, we were told in drivers ed that (Texas) DPS troopers would pull us over and give us a ticket for running a stop sign if we did that. (Imagines all the troopers and cops in Texas noting that Teslas are programmed for rolling stops, and they see dollar $ign$.)

LEOs love infractions like that - quick & easy way to boost their citation quota.

The only difference between Cheney and Trump with respect to installing a fascist GOP dictatorship is the timing.

Trump wants it done now, and Cheney thinks it is too soon to do that without facing a backlash that might destroy the GOP.

re: #71 steve_davis

my understanding from some recent article was that the booster bumped resistance to omicron back up to what it was against covid after the second shot, by increasing antibodies something like 24 fold over the two shot folks who weren’t boosted six months out.

I think that boostered resistance is like 70-75% vs omicron, compared to 90%+ vs wild, Alpha, etc.

Omicron is so contagious that a 75% vaccine wouldn’t prevent spread without other measures.

On the Cheney’s : we should remember than many of the GOP (both camps, the neocons and religious-right) actually despise Trump. They had no use for him at all.

Only because Trump correctly judged that America was ripe for a populist idiot did the GOP machinery decide they had to be on the Trump bandwagon.

The old-school neocons thought warmongering about enemies was enough.

The religious right thought that scaring people about the horrors of sex and atheists was enough.

The klansmen thought scaring white-people about brown-people was enough.

Trump showed them that the way to getting more votes was to appeal to the vapidness of reality TV.

It was definitely the scaring white people about brown people. Yes, Trump got noticed because of the show, but his enduring legacy is the promotion of all things white and demonization of people of color. It was his promotion of birtherism that got him fully onto the national stage. But before that, he demanded the death penalty for the Central Park 5, who were shown to be innocent of the crime; he never apologized for his campaign against them

The attacks on the 1619 Project and the efforts to ban “CRT” are all part of his racist policies. He taught the GOP that open racism sells — no more need to use subtle dog whistles.

Agree that the current CCP is much less communist in spirit and much more like an ancient imperial hierarchy with the emperor on top.

This is the thing with anti-China sentiment that bothers me: it is growing because of inferiority complexes, not because of high-moral ground stances.

We’ve being doing business with the CCP controlled China for decades now.

When China was still relatively small economically compared to the US we were ok with that.

But now, with the looming reality that the US is becoming number 2 on the world economic stage, people are starting to say CHINA-this and CHINA-that.

We (the US) are very, very hypocritical about all of this.

We need a come-to-Adam-Smith moment here: China will, and should because of its population, become the largest and thus most influential economy on the planet.

That it’s government is an oligarchy of political in-breeding and that ruling group really does horrible things to people within its own borders is a moral issue.

But it always has been.

re: #146 mmmirele

Putting up for adoption is an outdated statement that belies the history of the term.

FYI:

At the end of the 19th century, people in urban areas ran orphanages, and thought the solution to kids not being adopted was to send them west on trains to communities that had shortage of workers. These orphan trains would then stop at towns along the way, and literally put the kids up on a rail and people essentially bought the kids into their families as indentured help.

Today, adoption agencies refer to setting up adoption plans with the birth mothers.

I’m a sometime listener to the fourth era. That’s mostly because Belew was living in my hometown at the time and the band held rehearsals in a building across the street from a restaurant where I was a bus boy. So I got to see them from time to time. I was already a Belew fan from “Lone Rhinoceros” and that was the link to buying “Three of a Perfect Pair,” the only KC album I owned. I’ve mentioned this before, but because I was a small part of the local music scene in my own way I got to play volleyball a couple of times with Belew and other musicians in the park across the street from the house he was renting in Urbana, IL. Of course, I never actually had a conversation with any of them. But last year on Fathers Day I posted “Oh Daddy” to FB and a friend who is still a close friend with AB tagged him and he “liked” my post. Yay! It’s always about me.

This kinda puts us in the same place as Britain pre-Civil War. Technically against slavery but still doing business with the South because slavery meant cheap cotton.

I have a good book in my library: Blood, Tears, and Folly. It is an excellent history on how unprepared The British Empire was for WWII. The author went back quite aways in time to illustrate this.

Reading these parts I was struck by the similarities between Britain and the US. Why?

Well, after the Napoleonic Wars Britain was the premier manufacturing nation. If you wanted manufactured goods they probably came from Britain.

But the people with money soon decided that was…kind of beneath them. Factories are dirty, smelly, and not filled with the best people. So they decided to go into finance and spread their money far and wide, which came back with interest. It looked great on paper.

Who did they lend that money to? The US and Germany mostly. Who invested in industry. By the time of WWI the US was the chief manufacturing nation, and Germany was ahead of Britain. By WWII Britain had to armour its battleships with Czech steel, had to by foreign manufactured aircraft instruments, and buy its AA guns from Sweden and Switzerland.

After WWII guess who the #1 manufacturing nation was? And guess who decided that manufacturing was beneath them? And started lending money, a lot of it to Japan and then China?

And here we stand.

What I’m seeing on my Facebook timeline is a surge in anti-China memes.

Why?

I suspect this once again is due to political operatives trying to steer a hyper-nationalist pro-Trump (or Trump replacement) election.

Who’s to benefit from this anti-China meme-ing??

Long before the CCP existed rulers in eastern Asia were oppressing their neighbors.

Americans are usually totally unaware of the history of easter Asia.

Yes, I think there are parallels between Britain and the US if we shift our timeframe back 150 years or so.

Americans do the “America first” thing without even thinking about the fact that the US is only about 4.5% of the world’s population.

And for the past 50 years we, the US, and in particular American companies, have been gladly going overseas to find really cheap labor.

Because in the US slavery was outlawed way back when. When an American could own slaves there were few reasons to outsource labor to another part of the planet.

After WWII guess who the #1 manufacturing nation was? And guess who decided that manufacturing was beneath them? And started lending money, a lot of it to Japan and then China?

And here we stand.

IMO the decline of US manufacturing was not a historical inevitability — it’s the result of big finance capturing government and setting priorities accordingly. That’s why every US trade deal is bad for US manufacturing and good for US copyright holders and financiers.

Convincing people they should always want the lowest price set us down a bad path.

Just plugged the missus’ car in again…so much for cashing in on net metering today…wait! I just was able to stop charging and schedule it to start at 2am when electricity is 25 cents per kWh instead of 27…It’ll probably pull about 4kW from the battery but it will take about 45 kW total to fill up to 267 miles of range (Can’t max it out to 300 all the time because it reduces battery life apparently). So it should cost about $10 for the refill. Looking forward to later sunsets because then I’ll be able to fill the thing for about four or five bucks during the day.

Perhaps not historically inevitable, but humanly inevitable.

The types of people drawn to money and power are generally selfish and short sighted.

Not to mention Wake of the Flood and Yessongs. They are all great, great, great albums.

But none of them, at the (album’s) age of 49 continue to surprise me every time I play LTiA. It’s just breathtaking and a tremendous example of musical brilliance, from the opening section of the opening track (a Kalimba for Dog’s sake!) to the use of “found around the house” percussion. It’s daring. It is shockingly prescient of the future of hard metal. It rejects time signatures for a melding of sound(s).

It’s a rare gem of musicality.

re: #212 steve_davis

honestly, losing the money is irritating enough, but it was a really nice assortment of library of america volumes someone bought off me. they don’t exactly have tremendous sentimental value to me, but still, I had to work a bit to put the set together, used, in the first place, and it’s gonna really peeve me if they’re sitting in a box in a warehouse somewhere, or worse, sitting on the bookshelf of some postal employee who decided they’d make a nice starter set to their library.

Media mail is low priority. I had a package that parked itself in a warehouse or something on the east coast and sat there for weeks. It got to me eventually.
