Lyrics:
Don’t call me an angel
Ill always be sinful
It don’t make me evil
I ain’t evil
But I got my wicked
Got my Wicked ways

Been the liar
Been the cheat
Been the black heart
Been the thief
Curse my name
But I believe
We all play the sinner and the saint
And the in betweens
I need my devils
I let them rage
I keep my eyes wide open
When I pray
Been the Villain
To misbehave
I like trouble coming
In a hundred different ways
And Heaven knows
That I’ll never change

So don’t call me an angel
I’ll always be sinful
It don’t make me evil
I ain’t evil
But I got my wicked ways
I’ll never be faithful
I’ll always be tempted
It don’t make me evil
I ain’t evil
But I got my wicked
Got my wicked ways

I’ve been the freak
I’ve disobeyed
Every single virtue
That I ever praised
I get so high
On feeling low
Love Running with the sicker things
And Sleeping with my ghosts
I burn a flame
For every scar
I swore allegiance
To the Fire in my heart
That lights a darkness
I will never betray
No!

And Heaven knows
That I’ll never change

So don’t call me an angel
I’ll always be sinful
It don’t make me evil
I ain’t evil
But I got my wicked ways
I’ll never be faithful
I’ll always be tempted
It don’t make me evil
I ain’t evil
But I got my wicked
Got my wicked ways

So don’t call me an angel
I’ll always be sinful
It don’t make me evil
I ain’t evil
But I got my wicked ways

So don’t call me an angel
I’ll always be sinful
It don’t make me evil
I ain’t evil
But I got my wicked ways
But I got my wicked ways
And I’m never gonna change
It don’t make me evil
I ain’t evil
But I got my wicked ways
Got my wicked ways

Nice Nashville sound:

… That’s stealing dark from the night sky
My heart is yours for the takin’

If you want to take it
I know you’re scared you might break it
Girl it’s been breakin’ all my life
I’ve been running on empty

Like the ones here before me
And all this hurt our hearts are hauling
Hurts a littlе less each day
And that’s why we’ll run

From thе shine of the sun
That’s stealing dark from the night sky
And I held you close to me
Showed you where my heart would be

We’re home from town. The Smart was released from the car hospital. It’s good to go.

Some notes [behind the hide bar]

The steering is much tighter than it was. So are the brakes. The repair shop had to replace parts in both. I guess when you put ninety thousand miles on a new car, you don’t really notice parts gradually wearing.

Additionally, the brake pedal sits a couple inches higher than it did. That took getting used to.

Somehow, through the magic of the glass shop, when they replaced my windscreen they were able to remove my Nebraska Parks pass from the old glass and put it on the new windscreen. I asked them how they did that, since the sticker is designed to come off in a hundred pieces to prevent theft. The mechanic told me with all the different kinds of stickers they see (Colorado emissions, parking, park passes, &c), they have a lot of practice removing the stickers without damaging them.

They also kindly vacuumed out the whole car and washed it.

Hollywood needs to make an all-out super quality blockbuster movie about the 1-6 insurrection, based on the committee’s findings and testimony. They can call it “American Thermopylae, the Story of an Insurrection.” If they don’t have the guts, someone else might.

I just used a can of black beans (drained) that I pureed in a food processor (adding back in juice as needed) and then added 3/4 of a tsp of this taco seasoning. I then fried in two tbsp of extra virgin olive oil until it was reduced to the consistency I wanted. I liked the way it turned out. YMMV applies here of course.

Palm Beach Post (updated July 5, 2022)

MorseLife [nursing home] to pay $1.75 million after giving COVID vaccines to rich donors ahead of patients

WEST PALM BEACH — MorseLife, a high-end nursing home, will pay a $1.75 million settlement after being accused of illegally giving some of the nation’s first COVID-19 vaccines to its wealthy donors instead of the vulnerable patients and staff they were meant for, federal investigators said last week.

The bosses of MorseLife Health System, a nonprofit nursing home on David S. Mack Drive just south of the Ballpark of the Palm Beaches, had ordered the inoculation of hundreds of well-connected, well-off benefactors in late December 2020, the U.S. Department of Justice said.

re: #60 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

Another snippet from the sociopath who runs the company:

“Of course go after the billionaires first,” MorseLife CEO Keith Myers wrote in a text message to an employee of the nonprofit’s fundraising foundation. Myers and other executives aren’t named in the Justice Department’s statement, as is usual practice for the agency, but they are listed on the company’s tax filings.

“I have delivered you 350 of the richest people in the country,” Myers texted. “Do not be weak be strong you have the opportunity to take advantage of everyone who needs the shot and figure out what they have and what we can go after.”

Donors and employees told The Palm Beach Post at the time that MorseLife had directed staff to inoculate affluent donors first.

MorseLife had ordered the vaccines in October 2020 as part of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Pharmacy Partnership for Long-Term Care Program. Out of 976 people inoculated as of Dec. 31, 2020, the majority of recipients - 567 of them - were ineligible, the Justice Department said. They were not employed by the company, nor did they work for it.

re: #61 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

Further down the article, the newspaper notes that the company which owns the nursing home is a huge donor to the Florida Republican Party.

When Gov. Ron DeSantis was informed of the fraud scheme in January 2021, he said at the time the state would investigate. There has been no update since then.

The company formed a “Good Government PAC” which seems to exist to bribe Republicans.

Florida police sergeant seen grabbing officer by the throat is charged with battery and assault

A Florida police sergeant who was seen in body camera video grabbing another officer by her throat last year was charged with battery and assault on a law enforcement officer, officials said Thursday.

Christopher Pullease, 47, was also charged with evidence tampering and assaulting a civilian during the Nov. 19 incident, the Broward State Attorney’s office said in a statement.

Pullease, who was relieved of his supervisory duties in January, was accused of “intentionally touching or striking” the female officer against her will and assaulting her when he held pepper spray to her face, the statement said.

On the Covid front, the congestion is much better today and I can almost breathe normally. I am still cycling between fever/sweats and chills/shivering but the depths are less pronounced. I have more of a wet cough now but it is well controlled with Benzotanate. I still tire very quickly and can’t engage in any kind of physical activity for very long. I can’t cook of course but the farm manager and his wife have saved me from emergency rations by leaving a plate on the porch, then clearing out before I open the door. You can tell we aren’t Repugs because we take this quarantine business seriously. Tonight it was (home-made) flour tortillas, carne guisada, and arroz picante with some kind of mango/melon mix for dessert. Hard to believe there are people who don’t like this kind of food.
My doctor said I am not a candidate for Paxlovid because of the blood thinner I take, especially the extra ones I had to take in response to a probably clot last weekend.

The 1980s called, they want their talking point. In the flagship magazine of Evangelicals, Christianity Today:

Fantasy Role-Playing Is Hurting America (July 21, 2022)

How the cult of imagined heroism is bringing down our nation’s institutions. (Russell Moore)

He really goes on to try to compare Dungeons & Dragons to Steve Bannon and communism.

As a kid in the 1980s, I heard dire warnings from my evangelical elders about the fantasy role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons. It was, we were told, a foothold of the occult.

Although I never played D&D, I didn’t take these admonitions all that seriously, because I reasoned that the same logic could be applied to Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings or Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia.

Now, in the 2020s, I am wondering if my evangelical elders weren’t partly right about the way fantasy role-playing can paganize a culture—just not in the way they expected.

In this month’s Atlantic, Jennifer Senior explores a similar thought in relation to nationalist political strategist/right-wing media personality Steve Bannon, who is currently indicted on charges of contempt of Congress regarding his alleged role in the January 6 insurrection.

Sure. A win-win for Putin and his propagandists. Think how easily they can then play the victim card, how they’re being bullied by NATO/the West, that they’ve been deprived of their so-called “historical homeland” by the evil and monstrous United States and their allies.

Russians have an inferiority complex and a victim complex. And a decisive defeat at the hands of NATO would nicely play into both.

I post here from time to time on the Free State Project in NH. When I moved here 10 years ago it was a joke. Now they control the state GOP. So this morning I’ve been trying to understand the main players. I don’t know if they can grow stronger, but it’s clear they are getting substantial funding from the usual suspects (Koch, primarily).

Anyway, a smallish ski resort owned by Belknap county that saw revenues increase substantially over the last couple of years had their entire management team resign a couple of days ago. Why? The county has been infiltrated by FSP politicians who put fellow travelers on the oversight commission. It seems they are so incompetent and arrogant that the management team couldn’t work with them. Like Trump, everything these people touch dies (our ed system has been in their cross hairs for awhile).

it’s the right wing ‘terrorists’ who actually end up killing people

“A bill to codify federal protections for same-sex marriage has passed the House, but Senate Republicans are agonizing over whether they should block it or allow it to pass,” NBC News reports.

“With Democrats seeking to portray Republicans as belonging to a retrograde and primitive party that wants to strip away modern rights, their decision could play a role in the midterm elections this fall.”

“Some GOP strategists want the party to move past the issue by codifying protections, but that risks upsetting the cultural conservatives, which make up a significant portion of the party’s base. A Gallup poll released last month found that most Americans — 71 percent — favor legal same-sex marriage.”

I like this…you don’t need a hunting/fishing license. But you do need to pay your child support.

SALT LAKE CITY — The law was designed to get people’s attention and it appears to be working.

Figures provided to FOX 13 News show a surge in court-ordered child support payments in the year since a law went into effect, blocking people from obtaining hunting and fishing licenses if they owe.

“This has been very successful. In the child support world, it’s very hard to move the needle on collections,” said Liesa Stockdale, the director of Utah’s Office of Recovery Services (a division of the Department of Health & Human Services) which is tasked with collecting child support.

The law automatically denies a hunting or fishing license to anyone who is past due more than $2,500 in child support for a year or more.

ICYMI: Interesting bit from the NYT about the guy who assassinated Shinzo Abe:

In Japan, Abe Suspect’s Grudge Against Unification Church Is a Familiar One

Apparently, Tetsuya Yamagami’s mother had bankrupted the family by being induced to donate hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Moonies (for “saving her ancestors from damnation” or something). Authorities haven’t opined any direct connection as to why Yamagami decided to plug the former PM: and probably won’t because (AFAICT) probing too deeply into Moonie influence (anywhere) seems to be a subject most “authorities” don’t want to touch. But interesting nevertheless.

Liz Cheney has spent about a quarter of her time on the dais of the Jan. 6 committee hearings reminding us that all the witnesses called before the committee to testify about Trump have been Republicans. Oh, boy, does she beat that tired-ass drum, like it’s supposed to mean something. Of course they’re Republicans! They were working for Donald Trump! A solid majority of GOP voters are fascists, and to them she is a traitor. Cheney will never hold elective office after this year again. There is a small contingent of professional politicians who would like to be able to use the base to get elected without having to be beholden to them.

That was the situation under 45 and they saw how that played out: they took over SCOTUS but could not budge ACA and really fell on their faces over Covid and the economy.

Whereupon they lost the election by such a large margin that none of their electoral shenanigans had much hope of working out. Although that did not keep them from clinging to it up to the present day.

I understand the frustration, but when you are going after the Godfather, the only people who can testify about the goings on in his inner circle are other mobsters. And there is value in showing that the J6 Committee is not a Democrats only partisan hit job as Fox News portrays it.

Yes, but in that analogy, we don’t laud the mobsters as good people or people of conscience, as. for example, this Atlantic headline screams:

Mike Pence Is an American Hero
Democrats should honor the Republican who’s trying to end Trumpism.

Seems like the division is between hyper conservative technocrats who understand how government works, and hyper conservative madmen.

The End of Trumpism is an improvement over what we had but not necessarily an overall win for most Americans. It still means a stacked Scotus while the personal freedoms, women’s minority and LGBTQ rights that we have fought for are still under attack.

That just makes the Republicans hate the witnesses even more, because it proves they are Rino tools of the Democrats out to get our great President and savior.

Waffles. Only waffles or I will nil 95 feces to your door and cause a schizoid

I can compromise on the waffles.

However, if it be waffles, then the ice cream must be French vanilla (made with real egg yolks.)

If not, I’ll split and form my own church.

They are serious social conservatives and besides, they can all afford to send their daughters off to a country estate or to a foreign boarding school…

The J6 Committee is burying Trump, and the Republicans working with the committee, whatever faults they have, which are many, are a big reason why.

NCIS, the top rated primetime network show of the last season averaged less than 11 million viewers per episode, so nearly 18 million in the middle of summer is damn good.

This isn’t good.

Blots on a field? (Science, July 21, 2022)

A neuroscience image sleuth finds signs of fabrication in scores of Alzheimer’s articles, threatening a reigning theory of the disease

In August 2021, Matthew Schrag, a neuroscientist and physician at Vanderbilt University, got a call that would plunge him into a maelstrom of possible scientific misconduct. A colleague wanted to connect him with an attorney investigating an experimental drug for Alzheimer’s disease called Simufilam. The drug’s developer, Cassava Sciences, claimed it improved cognition, partly by repairing a protein that can block sticky brain deposits of the protein amyloid beta (Aβ), a hallmark of Alzheimer’s. The attorney’s clients—two prominent neuroscientists who are also short sellers who profit if the company’s stock falls—believed some research related to Simufilam may have been “fraudulent,” according to a petition later filed on their behalf with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Schrag, 37, a softspoken, nonchalantly rumpled junior professor, had already gained some notoriety by publicly criticizing the controversial FDA approval of the anti-Aβ drug Aduhelm. His own research also contradicted some of Cassava’s claims. He feared volunteers in ongoing Simufilam trials faced risks of side effects with no chance of benefit.

So he applied his technical and medical knowledge to interrogate published images about the drug and its underlying science—for which the attorney paid him $18,000. He identified apparently altered or duplicated images in dozens of journal articles. The attorney reported many of the discoveries in the FDA petition, and Schrag sent all of them to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which had invested tens of millions of dollars in the work. (Cassava denies any misconduct [see sidebar, below].)
