There was an AGILE meeting going on at the table when I received the call that my mother was on her deathbed.

When I sent a message about my mother, the meeting was cancelled and everyone came over to hug me. Then I went home.

Why don’t pollsters add these questions?:

Q1: does it matter to you how economists define “recession” and “depression”?
Q2: Do you know how the Fed defines if the US is in a recession?

I’ll tell you why - because pollsters are only looking for headlines and the last thing they want to do is make their subjects actually think.

For the past two years, every “news” organization has been bombarding the public with dire predictions about the economy. The “liberal” press has been trotting out economists to declare that “the indicators” say that we’re dragging the bottom and a recession is inevitable “next year.” Meanwhile, the “conservative” press are telling them that we’re not only in a recession, but we’re in a state that rivals the Carter years and will only get worse so long as Biden is in office. But both sides agree on the same thing: If you’ve paid a bit more for a jug of milk, a gallon of gas, or a new pair of shoes, then you’re a victim of this economic downturn and should be raising hell about it to anyone who will listen.

The MAGAts still believe over three years later that “THE LAPTOP!!111” had not only emails but loads of pictures of Hunter engaged in sex acts with child prostitutes in China, and that Joe ordered the FBI to sit on those to prevent the public from finding out he’s being blackmailed by Xi personally. What makes you think they’re not already brewing up rumors of “missing” pages (if not entire sections) of Epstein’s Docs that would show both men were long-time clients of him and Maxwell?

I’ve been arguing with a chud in the Yahoo comments who seems to think it’s OK to force some 10 year olds to give birth or die trying after they have been raped, as long as there aren’t too many such cases. So I did a little internet research. Thousands of children age 10-15 years get pregnant in the US annually, and the birth rate for 10-14 year olds are 2 births per 10,000 girls. 5% of American children are sexually abused by age 12. So I’ve asked him how many children should be forced to give birth or die trying after they have been raped in his mind? The number for me is zero.

We know the answer, we saw it live when the news of a 10 yr old rape victim having to travel out of state to receive an abortion was met not with horror and condemnation of the rapist but instead denial that it ever happened and demands for those involved to be charged with “murder.” It’s a total inversion of Blackstone’s ratio, they truly would prefer a 100 victims die than a single “whore” be allowed to receive a perfectly legal abortion. They’ll come up with whatever rationalizations they need, going so far as to agree with the rapist that the child “seduced” him, to tell themselves that their stance is “moral” and any who would oppose it in the name of the victims are themselves “sinful.”

It continues to amaze me how many people think that driving until you’re barely conscious and then stopping at the first hotel on the next off-ramp for a “few hours” nap and a quick bite from the continental breakfast is still a plausible strategy. If I had a nickel for every person who’s given me a bleary look while moaning that they’ve been on the road for 10+ hours “non-stop” and thought we’d have a room sitting ready for them, I’d be able to move to someplace way nicer.

I am glad the pup made it out safe, and that the US Coast Guard agreed to rescue Leo.

The US Coast Guard made a daring rescue to airlift a Golden Retriever to safety on New Year’s Day after he plunged more than 300 feet over a sharp cliff — the second incident of its kind at the Oregon state park in just seven months.

Leo had been bounding ahead of his two owners and their other pup at Ecola State Park around 2:45 p.m. when he toppled over the ledge onto the rocky shores of Cannon Beach below.

The drop — the height of the Statue of Liberty — is only accessible by repelling down from a hiking trail.

Local fire departments had just set up their pulley systems when the Coast Guard chopper arrived on the side of the steep cliffside.

Dramatic footage of the rescue shows the 3-year-old pup cowering on the slim shore with his body pressed against the large rocks of the shoreline.

“No respect” -Rodney Dangerfield.

Migrants in Jersey? Fuhgettaboutit.

New Jersey officials are making sure the Big Apple doesn’t dump the out-of-control migrant mess on the Garden State — and are even deploying cops to usher asylum seekers from the US border onto Manhattan-bound NJ Transit trains as soon as they get off their buses.

The scrap across the Hudson comes as New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy tries to rally the state’s mayors to form a unified front, while New York City Mayor Eric Adams pleads with Murphy to take on at least part of the migrant burden that is burying the five boroughs.

“New Jersey just said, f-k this,” one source close to the situation told The Post on Wednesday. “New Jersey Transit cops were waiting for them in Secaucus to show them how to get on the train to New York.”

Multiple Garden State sources described the scene as hectic over the last few days, as nearly two dozen migrant buses rolled into train stations with “chaperones” — with NJ Transit cops then taking over and serving as guides on how to get nearly 1,000 asylum seekers across the river.

I so need a new computer…

Many websites are difficult to navigate now because my version of Chrome is so old. And Firefox is not of much help on some websites.

I’ll likely just get another Mac. But I’ve been browsing the mini-PC market… and I’m a bit underwhelmed. It seems like the PC gamers are driving the Windows market and they want flashy cases with huge Nvidia cards and kilowatt power supplies.

The mini-PCs seem stuck on old interfaces (USB-A, Display Port), and most are lacking in aesthetics.

I am hoping that Intel’s Meteor Lake family will find its way into the mini-ITX motherboards. That should help a lot. But Intel’s “Ultra” family is not going to be sold over the counter, not intended to be user upgradeable (no CPU mount that a use can access.)

Probably the PC diehards will whine about things being soldered on the system board and not user upgradeable. It’s why they dismiss Macs (all current Macs but the Mac Pro tower have no user adjustable items inside.)

Anyway, my eyes gloss over when I look at Windows-world. And Linux is a no-go for me. Therefore I will likely stay with Apple.

The current iMac is a work of art, but limited in memory specifications. The Mac Studio can do about anything… for a price.

I really think the desktop computer market is fading away. People want phones, and maybe a tablet.

But I am old and used to a keyboard…. which makes it all a bit old fashioned of me to want something like I bought 20 years ago.

We don’t plan but we do start looking ahead and calling for rooms ~ 3 - 4 hours before we stop, so far it’s been a successful strategy. * we did end up at a best western with a 1 inch gap under the doors during a high plains blizzard once. That was a road hazard stop, & not where we would have stopped normally. Towels worked to plug the gap that wind driven snow was blowing in through.

One of the few things I agreed with GW Bush about was his immigration reform policy. But his own party would not get on board with it. Too many vested interests in keeping a steady flow of cheap, easily exploited workers.

And too many interests in criminalizing those seeking to come here on a temporary basis to do jobs Americans wont do (like working in fields or doing food service/processing jobs) on the cheap. Instead of criminalizing those who hire undocumented persons, we criminalize those who are hoping to work periodically in the US and then prevent them from cycling through the border (fences don’t stop people from coming here, but they do make it harder for people to return back to Mexico). Cyclical flow would be healthy, but that’d require more and faster processing of visas.

Heck, cyclical flow would be a net positive if you raised fees to do all that work and legalized the flow of people coming in and allow them to return home. This isn’t about amnesty, but to recognize that the cyclical flow of people to work in the US is a net benefit.

The problem for the GOP is that they *hate* persons of color, and those coming through the border (Mexican border is all that matters to the GOP) is that they’re not white.

They don’t care that those coming from Latin America are religious, Christian, etc., or even “conservative” because they don’t have the right skin tone, and demonize them anyways. This could be a natural base for the GOP to grow, but the GOP attacks POC at every turn, and Trump’s explicitly calling for expulsion of millions of POC and Latinos.

It’s insane, but that’s the GOP.

The capitalist paradise is to produce everything while employing no one. There is a flaw somewhere in that thinking.

OTOH, technology enabling fewer people to produce more has, over the course of the industrial revolution, made everyone wealthier, and more people are employed than ever. If we ever get to the point than technology can produce anything we want just by asking for it (tea, earl grey), I hope we can achieve a Star Trek caliber egalitarian society without a bloody civil war in getting there. Before then, we still need technology assisted productivity gains so that incomes can continue to rise.

Too many business models are based an unending flow on cheap untrained or low-skill labor. We would really have to rework the way we grow, process and serve food, the hospitality and domestic services industry, gardeining/landscaping, construction, etc…

If we made farm work $50/hr, most Americans would still suck at it.

The president’s speech this Saturday will be about the future of democracy - yet the press seems reluctant to make that clear

When Joe Biden talks on Saturday about US democracy on the brink, there’s no doubt that it will be a campaign speech. Maybe the most important one of his life.

But the speech will be more than that. It’s intended as a warning and a red alert, delivered on the anniversary of the violent January 6 insurrection at the Capitol.

The date was chosen for good reason - to make the point that more mayhem and more flagrant disregard for the rule of law and fair elections, are just around the corner if Donald Trump is re-elected.

Can the political media in America get that reality across? Or will their addiction to “horserace” coverage prevail?

So far, the signs aren’t particularly promising.

A line high up in the New York Times’ advance coverage of what Biden plans to say is typical of the mainstream media’s tone and focus: “The two speeches are part of an effort to redirect attention from Mr. Biden’s low approval numbers and remind Democrats and independent voters of the alternative to his reelection.” (Biden is speaking on Saturday at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, and Monday at the South Carolina church where a young white supremacist murdered nine black parishioners in late 2016.)

CNN offered an advance headline that emphasized the presidential race, not the message: “Biden opens campaign push …”

USA Today did better, putting the emphasis where it belongs: “Biden will mark Jan. 6 anniversary with speech warning Trump is a threat to democracy.”

We all know there’s a campaign happening. And remember, many readers don’t get beyond the headlines or news alerts. Those bulletins have to be short, true, but they also have to get the larger job done.

I’m not suggesting that Biden’s speech be covered as something separate from his presidential campaign. It’s obvious that November’s election and the fragility of American democracy are intertwined.

Even Biden campaign officials are making that point. “We are running a campaign like the fate of our democracy depends upon it. Because it does,” campaign manager Julia Chavez Rodriguez has said.

But there is another element that is more subtle.

“The choice for voters,” Rodriguez said, “will not simply be between competing philosophies of government. The choice will be about protecting our democracy and every American’s fundamental freedom.”

That’s where the media gets tripped up. In a constant show of performative neutrality, journalists tend to equalize the unequal, taking coverage down the middle even though that’s not where true fairness lies.

Biden, of course, is not a great natural speaker, and perhaps the biggest knock on him is that he’s 81 - and not a young 81.

Those factors won’t help, no matter what the media focuses on.

But journalists do have an obligation to get beyond delivery and appearances, to get beyond poll numbers and approval numbers - all the things that they are most comfortable with.

The mainstream media is not nearly as comfortable with communicating the larger concepts, even when the stakes are this high.

Constantly under attack from the right, they fear looking like they are “in the tank” for a particular candidate or party, so they fall back on those traditional building blocks of coverage - numbers, polls, approval ratings.

That may have worked in the past, or at least been relatively unobjectionable. Not any more.

Speech coverage is only one part of that. Journalists need to get across to voters in day-to-day coverage - between now and November - what a second Trump presidency would mean.

Reporters and their bosses - both in newsrooms and in glossy corporate offices - should remember that being in favor of democracy isn’t a journalistic crime. In fact, it’s a journalistic obligation.

I was going to make a joke about Jorgena Santos, but since George does drag, it might have caused confusion:

In a bizarre micro-scandal that some have dubbed “GrubGate,” a former GOP congresswoman who is running for her old seat in South Texas is being accused of routinely stealing photos of Mexican food from other social media accounts and passing them off as her own cooking.

Earlier this week, Mayra Flores, the first Mexican-born woman to serve in Congress, posted a photo on social media that she described as “gorditas de masa” with the caption, “the Ranch life with family is the best.”

Soon after, a user on X, formerly known as Twitter, pointed out that that the image was previously posted on a Facebook page, “Visit Guyana,” in March 2022. Others said that the food in the photo was not gorditas de masa. That prompted the conservative website Current Revolt to dig further into Flores’ social media accounts, where they found numerous other posts in which Flores used others’ photos of campfire cooking or homemade tortillas to illustrate her own idyllic life on a ranch.

We follow the same plan every time we drive to NY. Coffee & food stops along the Ohio Turnpike, and then we stay overnight in Clearfield PA eastbound and in Clarion PA on the way home.

I’ve driven in NYC once. That was good enough. There’s enough mass transit and cabs that I will pay to let someone else handle that madness.

It’s funny, though; while I will often take PATCO when I’m going to Center City Philly, I don’t find driving there as stress-making as I do NYC or Boston. Probably the familiarity thing you cited earlier. Also, despite its size, getting around Philly by car at street level isn’t too awful.

One of the things we on the left have to get better at doing is complaining to the companies we’re giving money to. We think boycotts work in all cases, but it doesn’t really work with news sources. I made the comment about NPR yesterday: all Democrats should donate to it, even if it’s only $1 per month, and then complain when their coverage is biased against Democracy. When we took a long weekend to Boston a few years back, we drove but basically paid $54 to store the car at the hotel garage. Took the T, walked, or Lyft-ed wherever we went.

Literally as we’re getting off the highway on to street level in Boston, we had a Masshole suddenly switch two lanes left with no signal and maybe eight feet to spare between us. I’m like “We ain’t moving that car again until we leave.”

SF and Vegas were two other cities where we either left the car parked or never rented one and took mass transit/walked.

Followup question: Do these people who say Trump is a religious figure consider him the Antichrist bringing about the end times? Because I’d posit that many are hoping for the chaos and End Times thanks to the policies he advances. They’re nihilists and hoping for a better existence after they think they’re getting Raptured.

Reality is another thing - where they’ll just be dead. And everyone else suffers from their religious beliefs.

Sedona, Arizona was the best for that: you got some winter frosts and even the occasional dusting of snow but most of it was up on the hillsides where you could see it and smell it but did not have to shovel.

My wife wanted to move to Sedona after a visit to the area.

My response, after visiting the area with streams and countryside horse rides, folk in this area don’t have enough water. And what water is available is under the control of folk who can turn the water off.

How much are you willing to spend, and what do you really want? Because you can get anything from a good Chromebook to a good windows machine, and yes, you can still build your own desktop if you want. As for laptops, most of Nvidias RTX cards are available for laptops. And you can do what I did for my son, and buy a separate display that plugs into the HDMI port, all the way from less than $100 to a few hundred with touch screen capabilities.

Edit: The display is also portable, so you can take it with you. amazon.com

Don’t get me wrong, I own a macbook, and I like it just fine, and I can accept the processor and memory being soldered on although I would prefer the memory not be, but the storage being soldered on to me feels like just a way to force obsolescence as fast as possible. I mean who wants to have to carry around external storage when you run out of space even if it is almost as fast as the internal drive. If something is going to fail it is likely to be the memory or storage in which case you have to shell out to replace the entire mainboard instead of just buying a new $50 nvme.

Welcome to the Christian fascist future: father and son murder pregnant daughter and her boyfriend.

This case supposedly relates to drugs, but I’m suspicious about that finding.

The two suspects were filmed being led by officers past waiting media into a car in a clip shared by police after midnight.

The two bodies were found on Dec. 26 in a Kia Optima car belonging to Guerra, but the alleged murders took place five days earlier, just before midnight on Dec. 21, Moscoso said. Both died from gunshots to the head, the Bexar County medical examiner said.

Investigators are unsure where the alleged murders happened, but police said that the couple were killed and then taken to a street outside an apartment complex, where they were found.

Moscoso confirmed that Ramon Preciado wouldn’t be charged as an accomplice as he was not present at the time of the alleged murders.

Soto’s death has left her family stricken with grief and comes 19 months after her 15-year-old brother, Ethan Soto, was shot dead in what has been described as a dispute over money.

I took an Amtrak from Flagstaff to Chicago around the turn of the 1980’s.

The way out was brilliant: sunrise over the Painted Desert, sunset through the Rodckes, sleeping through the flat bits and waking up in time to cross the Mississippi and then through awesome rolling Southern Illinois farm country.

The way back sucked massively as all the good bits were at night and all we got was entire day of flat open prairie and nondescript towns along the rail line.

Although the Washington Post and NY Times each have flaws, it’s not as though there is some other daily publication that will provide in-depth news and a consistent set of editorial/opinion page columns that we can all accept. If they go, the available news sources will be even worse than today. Do you really want to rely on the Murdoch WSJ whose editorial policy has been disgraceful for forever? Tell me — what other news organization has the resources and the appropriate point of view for a daily paper of record?

I’ve posted this before,.

I always subscribe to the local newspaper when and where I reside, and the NYTimes. I don’t read NYTimes political comment - as except during the pentagon papers - historically its political coverage has been conservative mush.

My current local paper is the Nashville Tennessean, in which I was pleased to find they still publish daily comics strips.

I find your comment about driving in NYC rather funny, having grown up there and learned to drive there. Driving in NYC is relaxing and stress relieving for me - since it takes my mind off all the other things going on where I can concentrate on driving and skillfully avoiding accidents, traffic, etc., to get to my destination and finding a plum parking spot.

But I get that it can be extremely intimidating to someone who isn’t from these parts or someone who isn’t comfortable handling traffic (and lots of aggressive drivers).

My daughter went to Marymount Manhattan and I used to LOVE to get a chance to drive in NYC. Cross a bridge or tunnel and anything goes! I was once paid the ultimate compliment by a cabbie, in about 2003: “Hey, you drive like us!” after I crowded him out at an intersection.

If I were looking right now, that would be tempting. Storage is way too low for me though so I’d have to add several TB of external storage (games, media (music, movies, photos, etc - I refuse to use the “cloud” stupidity) to make it usable. Otherwise it would be fine for me.

Ah, point. A quick google shows that there are now 8TB M.2 SSDs on the market and with a max of 64gb RAM would give quite a bit of room for growth. With wireless and a compact keyboard & LCD, it would be more portable than the first several “laptops” I owned 🤣

I really think the desktop computer market is fading away. People want phones, and maybe a tablet.

But I am old and used to a keyboard…. which makes it all a bit old fashioned of me to want something like I bought 20 years ago.

Mini PCs built around AMD’s 7840 chip are great. Can’t speak for the aesthetics though.

As Henry Ford realized: workers need to earn enough to buy the products. Without anyone being employed, who will buy the products? UBI would solve that, but it will take a massive shift in thinking to get that done.

If the question didn’t specify faith in what, then each of them 100% had faith in something, and it’s a stupid question.

The Lukeville border is now open. It was closed for a month, its the main route for Arizonans to get to Puerto Penasco, Sonora Mexico AKA “Rocky Point”. Its a wonderful beach town with fantastic people, amazing food and affordable hotels in every class. During the last month you would have to drive an extra 2 hours through San Luis, which was a PITA. Back in high school and college days, we could just drive right up to the beach and plop a sleeping bag down. Nowadays that same beach has luxury hotels…oh well. There are still places down there you can camp on the beach though.

I prefer AMD to Intel & have for quite a while.

If I were looking right now, that would be tempting. Storage is way too low for me though so I’d have to add several TB of external storage (games, media (music, movies, photos, etc - I refuse to use the “cloud” stupidity) to make it usable. Otherwise it would be fine for me.

Gen 4 4TB NVME SSDs are down to under $250. Just get one of the TLC ones.
For larger storage needs you still probably want a spinning drive or 2 if you don’t want to spend multiple thousands. Most of the 7840 based mini PCs come with USB4 ports, which are plenty fast for external storage. Or you can set up a NAS.

Religions and cults have different definitions. They can overlap in belief in an imaginary supernatural, but things like isolating people from their families and friends are exclusive to cults. Weird right-wing political churches are cults that isolate people from their families and the larger culture.

Look at the overpopulated mass surviving on Basic Assistance on Earth in the universe of The Expanse for a much more likely future.

I think the more likely dystopian scenario is civilizational collapse due to something like climate change induced mass famine and/or nuclear war. Birth rates are falling globally such that the population of the earth is likely to peak then start dropping this century. If we can get a handle on the climate before it tips over into ecological collapse and can avoid blowing ourselves up, our descendants could enjoy a rosy future!

Trump ally Roger Stone was filmed taking a phone call from Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio in the leadup to the January 6th attack on the United States Capitol.

As Rolling Stone reports, the call was captured by filmmaker Christoffer Guldbrandsen, who made a documentary on Stone called “A Storm Foretold” that is due to be released in select theaters Friday.

The call came as Stone was organizing the “Stop the Steal” movement intended to keep Trump illegally in power after losing the 2020 election to President Joe Biden.

At the beginning of the call, Stone remarks to Tarrio that “I heard you got stabbed,” apparently in reference to a fight he’d gotten into with Antifa activists.

He then walked out to his car and asked the camera crew for some privacy while he talked with Tarrio, who would go on to be convicted of seditious conspiracy for his central role in inciting the Capitol riots.

“Stone had been busy, launching ‘Stop the Steal’ and mobilizing Trump allies and had just gotten off the phone with General Flynn, when Enrique Tarrio, the national leader of the Proud Boys called. Tarrio’s voice was inaudible, but Stone is heard telling him that he is still waiting for an update from the campaign — before he says he needs to talk without the camera rolling,” Guldbrandsen explained to Rolling Stone.

Stone has long been linked with the Proud Boys, members of which he hired to be his personal security guards. Despite this, Stone has not yet been criminally charged in relation to the January 6th Capitol riots.

Ditto for Mormonism

Every religion is a cult until it has been around a few centuries and has a large enough following, then it becomes a religion, and we have to respect the members beliefs as long as they don’t involve ritual human sacrifice.

Got myself a good slide scanner this Christmas, so I’m digitizing a lot of old photos. This one is easily the most exotic and hard to reach place I’ve ever been. These were taken inside the Santa Rita mine in Potosi, Bolivia. Perhaps the oldest carved into Cerro Rico, it is estimated that over 300,000 native and African slaves died here. Although underground, I’m at 15,200 ft. above sea level.

High spot 300 ft. inside the entrance. Tunnel beyond ~4’ in height.

This is where the rest of our small group turned around. I was willing to go ahead and was told by our guide to go straight for about the same distance more, stay to the right at a fork, and to a dead end a little further in. Then turn around and climb the pole ladder going up to the right—there’s a narrow spot where you have to squirm your shoulders to get through, but it’s only for 2 or 3 feet. At the next level, turn right and just ahead to the shrine. I managed to keep my moderate claustrophobia under control!

El Tio (One of several inside the mountain) Offerings of ribbons, cigarette papers, coca leaves, and the like are made to the ruler of the underworld to entreat protection for the miners. It turned out that this was the last shot available on the roll of film!

Driving in NY is so intimidating that I leave the car in whatever parking space I can grab like a trophy, and take an Uber wherever I want to go in the city.

I don’t mind driving in NYC. I don’t like parking in NYC.

But here’s the cool thing: my daughter is in college there, and her dorm this year is in Harlem, 10 minutes off the GWB on a very quiet side street where there is almost always a parking space. From there it’s a 5 minute walk to the A train and a one-stop ride downtown.

Tell me — what other news organization has the resources and the appropriate point of view for a daily paper of record?

re: #113 lawhawk

I find your comment about driving in NYC rather funny, having grown up there and learned to drive there. Driving in NYC is relaxing and stress relieving for me - since it takes my mind off all the other things going on where I can concentrate on driving and skillfully avoiding accidents, traffic, etc., to get to my destination and finding a plum parking spot.

But I get that it can be extremely intimidating to someone who isn’t from these parts or someone who isn’t comfortable handling traffic (and lots of aggressive drivers).

New York City driving is the worst, driving in Brooklyn is second worst. Driving through Newark to get to the Holland Tunnel sucks.

Weird that I never had a problem driving in LA even though the traffic is nerve wracking the streets of LA are built for cars and the streets of NYC are built for dog carts.

233
Vicious Babushka  Jan 4, 2024 • 10:46:03am

Also while driving in NYC the stress level is at 11 because some assholes will always try to cut you off if you leave even one centimeter of space between your front bumper and the car ahead of you. They see an out of state license and it’s all haha let’s shut out this rube tourist from making that right turn up ahead.

If none of them have journalistic integrity they all should be allowed to fail and be ignored. That some with deep pockets hang around as propaganda outlets is not a reason for me to shell out money to one that is “not quite as bad”. At this point I have little trust for any of the media outlets unto themselves. Very much a “Verify before you trust” media world out there now. The Fourth Estate has made its bed by chasing the dollar and is entering the find out phase.

Fact they don’t is one reason I feel no reason to support them.
