Lyrics:
Stubborn spirit restless child
No direction lets her mind run wild
Daughter to the universe sister of the cosmos
Sweet little angel wants to be wherever I go
Seen her out my window she’s the eye of the storm
Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned
Open conversation infiltrated by surveillance
Reactionary cadence exhausted all her patience
There’s a halestorm falling
I need shelter or she’ll wash me away
She can’t hear me calling
When the wind blows in wildflowers and sin
I hear her name
She just needs some time to understand why
She never could save me from myself
I know we need a break
How much more could she take
Before I just became bad for her health
Take all the time you need, we shouldn’t let it bleed Just apply some pressure before you leave, baby
‘Cause I injected you into my veins
Trying to chase some pleasure through our pain
There’s a halestorm falling
I need shelter or she’ll wash me away
She can’t hear me calling
When the wind blows in wildflowers and sin
I hear her name

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s running mate, Nicole Shanahan, frequented the Silicon Valley party circuit while married to Google founder Sergey Brin and was known to use cocaine, ketamine, and psychedelics, according to a new report in The New York Times.

The story, which follows an investigative profile on Shanahan published by The Daily Beast earlier this month, also alleged that Shanahan threatened to harm herself while negotiating her two divorces—one from Brin and the other from a tech investor who divorced her after 27 days in 2014 after discovering that she and Brin were having an affair.

Fish oil supplements may raise risk of stroke, heart issues, study suggests

Down the page:

“I can see the headline for this study as ‘Fish oil supplements: Is it time to dump them or not?’” said cardiologist Dr. Andrew Freeman, director of cardiovascular prevention and wellness at National Jewish Health in Denver.

“I say that because over-the-counter fish oil is very seldom recommended, is in none of the guidelines from professional medical societies, and yet that’s what most people take,” said Freeman, who was not involved in the study.
Fish oil only helped people with existing heart disease

The study analyzed data on over 415,000 people ages 40 to 69 participating in the UK Biobank, a longitudinal study of the health of people in the United Kingdom. Nearly one-third of those people, who were followed for an average of 12 years, said they regularly used fish oil supplements.

For people without heart issues, regular use of fish oil supplements was associated with a 13% higher risk of developing atrial fibrillation and a 5% heightened risk of having a stroke, according to the study, published Tuesday in the journal BMJ Medicine.

Over-the-counter fish oil suffers from a lack of purity and consistency, as well as the potential contaminants and heavy metals such as mercury that come with fish, Freeman said.

As noted in the article, if your physician recommends fish oil supplements, you should get prescription-version ones. They are far more expensive than over-the-counter, but they are regulated by the FDA for purity and efficacy.

OTC supplements are not regulated by the FDA.

They also recommend you buy them directly from the manufacturer if you’re buying supplements, and not from sites like Amazon or big box warehouse stores like Costco or Wal*Mart (as they store their inventory in warehouses which are not regulated for temperature, and high heat breaks down Omega-3 into ineffective oils).

Failing that, they recommend eating foods which contain the oil and are lower in mercury (only albacore tuna and not other varieties but no more than two times a week, sardines, wild-caught salmon (farmed salmon are often farmed in polluted water), &c.

They also recommend buying finger-stick test kits on-line which are inexpensive and test for Omega-3. One should not take Omega-3 if you’re levels are normal.

In case it still needs explaining, Omelas is a metaphor for the modern world, with the contentment vs suffering Gini index set to maximum. This is what makes it possible for us readers to delude ourselves into thinking we might be one of the ones who walk away, because one hypothetical child is something we can actually wrap our brains around.

“A typical workday for African tech contractors, the letter says, involves ‘watching murder and beheadings, child abuse and rape, pornography and bestiality, often for more than 8 hours a day.’ Pay is often less than $2 per hour, it says, and workers frequently end up with [PTSD]”

Posted this video earlier, but I think it is worth posting again:

Our Shirts Are Garbage | Climate Town

..

Issues around the global textile sector are large. The video brings up the major points.

The labor abuses deserve their own mention because it really exposes what the modern world really is about.

The pile of wasted clothing piling up in the Atacama desert has been covered by many outlets the past few years. An example:

A Mountain of Used Clothes Appeared in Chile’s Desert. Then It Went Up in Flames

My pessimism about climate change is well founded. So far the world has shown it will not seriously reduce our collective carbon emissions.

Clothing is one example of that.

Consumerism is the religion of the day.

I have yet to see evidence that is changing to any significant degree.

And here in the US our politicians do not dare go against consumerism.

25
Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  May 23, 2024 • 12:06:50am

Speaking of climate change, this was the big news the other day:

New research on Antarctica’s Thwaites Glacier could reshape sea-level rise predictions

[…]

At roughly 80 miles across, Thwaites is the widest glacier in the world and roughly the size of Florida. It has been nicknamed the “Doomsday Glacier” for the catastrophic effects its thawing could have on global sea-level rise.

[…]

The actual paper in PNAS:

Widespread seawater intrusions beneath the grounded ice of Thwaites Glacier, West Antarctica

2.7. Future Retreat.
At present, the GZ of Thwaites Glacier is retreating along a prograde slope, which is a configuration conducive to stabilization. Indeed, the grounding line retreat rate is twice slower than in the past when the grounding line was retreating on a flat bed (Fig. 2). Yet, the retreat is not halted by the prograde slope. Seawater intrusions extending 12 km may set up the glacier for further retreat (17). Once the glacier grounding zone retreats past Mouginot Ridge, which could happen in the next few years, it will migrate quickly to the South Ridge along retrograde slopes. South Ridge will be a smaller obstacle. It may only take 10 to 20 y before the glacier retreats past South Ridge, into the deeper basin, at which point a fast retreat will resume. In the nearby smaller-size basins of Smith and Pope Glaciers, retreat along retrograde slopes has proceeded at 2 to 3 km/y for multiple years (46). We conclude that the future of Thwaites—and other Antarctic glaciers—will hinge on how fast warm waters erode grounding zones over large distances, much faster than anticipated by current models.

When the major WAIS glaciers will collapse cannot be pinned down with any precision, but it really is only a question of when, not if.

When the day comes and Thwaites glacier goes, the world will notice. It will be a headline that sticks around for at least a few days. At that time even the dullest of deniers will have nothing to fall back on, save for the religious ones who will suddenly declare that climate change is god’s judgement on the world for this or that sin.

OTC supplements are not regulated by the FDA.

You can thank the dietary supplement industry and Senator Hatch for the clusterfuck that is the dietary supplement lack of oversight. Basically, if a DS doesn’t contain outright toxic substances, it is good to go. FDA does look at the ingredients that are defined as a non-dietary ingredient indeed to supplement the diet, but once it is given the go agead, there is no real oversight (except when one can be linked to dead bodies) on quality, purity, or even containing the intended active ingredient. there trin’ to take away are vitiminz

Who knew? LOL. Rumpus room, ah memories.

But Smith wasn’t doing a studio visit with the owners of a prestigious gallery — he was meeting with the corporate executives of Taco Bell, the California fast food chain that peddles Crunchwrap Supremes and Baja Blasts to the masses.

This was back in 2002 or 2003, before the company even created these artificial masterpieces. At the time, Smith was trying to convince them to let him make three paintings that would eventually get rolled out to most, if not all, Taco Bell locations in the U.S. At first, not everyone in the room was onboard with the concept because it was so expensive: It would require making prints of his Basquiat-like paintings, stretching them on canvas and then hanging them in each store to make them feel like real art as opposed to ubiquitous branded messaging.
But, against these odds, Smith got the green light of approval, and the pieces were distributed in 2003. Over the course of his expansive career, he’s been commissioned to work on projects for major clients like Absolut Vodka, DaimlerChrysler and the Olympics, cementing his status as a professional artist. Life went on, and the trio of paintings faded into memory.

Then, people suddenly started stealing them.

It all began in 2015 in Westlake, Ohio, when a burglar ran off with one of his pieces and disappeared, stumping local police, Artnet reported. Four years earlier, a group of teenagers and young adults also tried stealing an unnamed “painting valued at $157” from a Taco Bell in the same location, CBS reported, though details about its provenance are scant. Following the heist, officers declared to outlets that they were “going to search every dorm room and rumpus room in a ten mile radius,” though they never answered SFGATE’s request for more information about the outcome.

Shropshire Slasher  May 23, 2024 • 6:13:01am

I hear it is a growing business.

It’s a warm Tuesday in early May, and I’m a block from the historic New York Public Library building in midtown staring at a penis. It’s semi-erect and bleeding slightly, but there’s gauze on hand to soak things up. Bobbing in and out from under the skin at the shaft is an inch-long needle (technically a cannula since it’s not sharp and is going into a small hole already created by a needle) attached to a syringe that contains hyaluronic acid. This same type of filler that’s been injected into countless lips is now being used to pursue a plumper, thicker look — except in this case, it’s one most people won’t see.

Dressed in all black, wearing purple medical gloves, and displaying the no-nonsense demeanor of someone who’s lost track of how many penises he’s seen in his career is Chris Bustamante, 32, known to many online as Injector Chris. We’re at Lushful Aesthetics, the clinic he runs as a licensed nurse practitioner and where this procedure, penile-girth enhancement (also known as penis filler), has quickly become the bulk of his working life.

As Bustamante injects five vials first into the sides of the shaft, then six more around the glans (if you’re picturing a mushroom as the head of a penis, that’s the glans, and he is injecting around the base rim of the dome), he sweeps the needle slightly from side to side, then uses his thumbs to massage out any filler lumps, sculpting through what he calls “transitional zones” like a potter smoothing an edge of clay.

There have been a handful of examples. I recently saw a story about a MAGA who has been voting his whole adult life. It was only when he applied for social security benefits he had been paying into for decades that he found out that they did not consider him to be a US citizen. He had been born in Canada to a US father and Canadian mother, but he hadn’t proven that his father had lived in the US long enough to automatically pass US citizenship to him, so he is an undocumented immigrant Trump plans to round up into a concentration camp until he can be deported.

KFF Health News put out a good primer why vaccine sceptis are bad for society.

4 Ways Vaccine Skeptics Mislead You on Measles and More

Measles is on the rise in the United States. In the first quarter of this year, the number of cases was about 17 times what it was, on average, during the same period in each of the four years before, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Half of the people infected — mainly children — have been hospitalized.

This story also ran on CBS News. It can be republished for free.
It’s going to get worse, largely because a growing number of parents are deciding not to get their children vaccinated against measles as well as diseases like polio and pertussis. Unvaccinated people, or those whose immunization status is unknown, account for 80% of the measles cases this year. Many parents have been influenced by a flood of misinformation spouted by politicians, podcast hosts, and influential figures on television and social media. These personalities repeat decades-old notions that erode confidence in the established science backing routine childhood vaccines. KFF Health News examined the rhetoric and explains why it’s misguided:

I don’t think Don Jr or any of the spawn have the necessary grip on the MAGATs or the evangelicals. And once that is clear the remains of the “normal” GQP will scuttle them as quickly as possible in order to grasp at whatever influence they can. Plus a massive infight over who gets to control the money flow. Which, hopefully, leads to most of the rich patrons deciding to not donate or support any of them.

But there are a lot of GOP politicians who do that. As much as we detest him, Trump has a certain charisma and really connects with his base in a way I don’t think Jr. can emulate. Even in the fucked up world of GOP politics, I don’t believe Jr. has what it takes to step into his daddy’s shoes, though I certainly expect him to run and to be a contender if Trump doesn’t run again.

Supreme Court allows disputed South Carolina voting map that critics say excludes Black voters

At issue was South Carolina’s congressional district map used in 2022, which was created by the GOP-led state legislature and moved Black voters from one district to another. The justices had to decide whether it was permitted as a way to bolster the Republican majority or was an unconstitutional effort to divvy up voters by race.

And now the latest from Stewpid Peters!

New Far-Right Film: Capitol Was Built By Literal Giants

HOLY IRWIN ALLEN, BATMAN!

White nationalist Stew Peters recently unveiled the trailer for his network’s latest propaganda film. Titled Old World Order, it promotes the so-called “Tartarian Empire” conspiracy theory, which posits that buildings such as the Chicago Federal Building and the U.S. Capitol were built by a race of technologically-advanced giants who were wiped out in a great “mud flood.”

And any evidence for this race of giants was — of course — either destroyed or covered up by wealthy elites, such as the Rockefellers and the Rothschilds.

The trailer shows photos of ornate buildings, including the Milan Cathedral, the Chicago Federal Building, the U.S. Capitol, and the Palace of Justice of Brussels. It then cuts to various people who claim that these buildings appear too large to have been built by “people of our height,” and were actually “built by the prior civilization.”

It’s not like Hitler who was a young man when he served his time; Trump is elderly and losing in 2024 will end his reign of tyranny. Tartaria another socialism of fools, postulating why “the future” is disappointing.

This isn’t spreading because of stupidity, it’s wish fulfillment. It makes the world make sense to the people entertaining it and presents a kind of magical solution—identify the villains and all the major systemic crises can be solved with ancient technology—for everything that makes people suffer or even just feel alienated.

It’s also fascism-adjacent in how it creates a fictive nationalism…just more ambitiously fictive than usual…and proposes that all problems emanate from a conspiracy.

There’s a reason Republicans hate mail-in ballots: it’s impossible to close polling stations or create artificially long lines to deter voting in Black neighborhoods. It’s impossible to make it illegal to provide water and shade to people. It’s impossible to send goons out with guns to make people afraid.

Mail-in voting is the best thing to happen to democracy in our history.

Trump knows that to win he needs more votes from African-American and Hispanic men because he’s not getting back college educated women. So it would not surprise me if he selected Rubio or Scott. He doesn’t think much of women generally, except Ivanka because she is Trump’s daughter-wife, and women of color are at the very bottom of Trump’s regard, so I agree that Haley would be a highly unlikely choice for Trump.

Then again, he’s also looking at the VP as someone who should self-defenestrate if asked to do so. That means anyone who is sufficiently sycophantic and lacking self-awareness to believe Trump and do his bidding.

Rubio fits that bill, though they’d have to get around the state residency question (as if the law ever stopped Trump before).

while tfg could decamp to NJ, probably he’d make rubio move.
it’s the power dynamic and all.

rubio doesnt lose his seat if he moves.
residency is only about ‘at the time of his election’

I was just reading Justice Kagan’s dissent on this, in fact. Basically, the Supreme Court majority has just invented qualified immunity for state legislatures, where it says that if the state asserts that it has a non-racial motivation for drawing a map a certain way, it must be believed without question.

It is trivially easy for a person to change their residence, so I don’t expect that to be an impediment if Trump decides on Rubio. I had thought that establishment Republicans might not want to be Trump’s VP if he is running as a convicted felon, but I now believe that the GOP is so debased that with a handful of exceptions no current Republican politician would see it as a badge of shame to lower themselves to be his running mate.

Off the top of my head, the only prominent GOP office holders or candidates I can think of who may explicitly say they aren’t voting for Trump in 2024 are Romney, Hogan, Murkowski and Collins. Almost all never-Trump Republicans are now pundits or authors instead of office holders or candidates.

The same people who fixated on butter mails, are absolutely content to ignore Trump’s felony conduct re: classified docs, and think that an old guy running after a largely successful first term is incapable of governing (even though that’s exactly what Biden has done since entering the WH).

Age is somehow disqualifying, but felony conduct isn’t.
Age is somehow disqualifying, but buying into conspiracy theories isn’t (RFK Jr. and Trump).
Age is somehow disqualifying, but disastrous economic policy isn’t (Trump).
Age is somehow disqualifying, but disastrous policies re: abortion, reproductive health, women’s rights isn’t (Trump).
Age is somehow disqualifying, but disastrous voting rights policies isn’t (Trump).
Age is somehow disqualifying, but mental infirmities isn’t (Trump).
Age is somehow disqualifying, but profiting from every decision made in the WH isn’t (Trump).

The media sucks, because they invariably get back to Biden’s age, while trying to offset, diminish, overlook, ignore, or obfuscate Trump’s failings. The desperate need to have a horse race overwhelms the need to truthfully and factually report that this campaign is between a good and decent old guy (yeah, Biden’s old) and a multiple state/federal indicted and soon to be convicted felon who can’t string together a coherent passage and whose policies are disastrous for all but the wealthiest Americans and white guys who believe the baffling BS that Trump somehow cares about them, and a conspiracy nut (Trump and/or RFK Jr).

Extraordinary footage shows how a Ukrainian FPV drone operator blew a Russian assault boat out of the water in the Dnipro delta.

The vessel and the seven Putin troops on board were thrown high in the air with the force of the explosion.

The assault soldiers landed in the water, and most were seen swimming towards Nestryha island in Kherson region, which Russia has been seeking to control since last year.

The only GOP antidote is to find an excuse not to count them.

There is no reason that they cannot be counted first, it is just the accepted practice that they are counted last because up until recently, they were pretty much evenly split between parties and rarely tipped the outcome.

But the GOP knows that will not be the case (as with 2020) and they will be pressing to end the count while their man is still ahead.

there is a sort of logic to not starting the count before election day.
to prevent leaks.
i understand it
i dont agree with it. especially when early in person voting is going on.

the rest of it is idiocy

- there is a totality (a “universe”) of valid votes for each election from different sources (mail in, early voting, day of, valid late mail in arrivals)
- for a tabulation to be fair, *all* valid votes must to be counted.
- the *order* that the ballots are counted has no effect on who the eventual winner is
- until they’re *all* counted no one knows who the winner is
- the only thing that matters is the result after they are all counted.
THAT number doesnt change. it is simply unknown until it is known.

if all the valid votes are not counted, that election result is unfair

Hundreds of thousands, they were the best people!

Former President Donald Trump will campaign in one of the most Democratic counties in the nation Thursday, holding a rally in the South Bronx to woo minority voters days before a Manhattan jury will begin deliberations on whether to convict him of felony charges in his criminal hush money trial.

Trump will address supporters in Crotona Park, a public green space in a neighborhood that is among the city’s most diverse and its most impoverished, a change from the majority-white areas where he holds most of his rallies. His campaign said he is expected to draw a crowd of several thousand people.

The banner featured the “most famous mug shot ever to exist in America,” as described by Lara Trump, taken when the former president was indicted on RICO charges in Fulton County, Georgia. Trump supporters are now sending threatening letters to get people to vote for him

“We will notify President Trump if you don’t vote. You can’t afford to have that on your record.”

“We see you haven’t voted yet. Your voting record is public,” a recent mailer to Texas Republicans says. “Your neighbors are watching and will know if you miss this critical runoff election. We will notify President Trump if you don’t vote. You can’t afford to have that on your record.”

The mailer, which says it was sent by “The America First Conservatives Election Department,” showed up to voters leading up to the state’s May 28 primary election. Trump is likely to win the primary regardless - his opponents have all dropped out of the primary - but the mailer still strikes an ominous tone.

It adds, “We will contact you after the election to make sure you voted. Please don’t make us report you to President Trump! We are sending an official list of Republicans who fail to vote in the upcoming runoff to President Trump. Public records show that YOU HAVE NOT VOTED. President Trump will be VERY DISAPPOINTED.”

Trump did not refer to any contacts with Putin or say what grounds he had to believe that the Russian leader would release Gershkovich.

Donald Trump has posted on social media that he will use his relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin to get Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich freed from a Russian prison.

Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social that this would happen soon after the November election in the United States, when he is seeking to defeat President Joe Biden and return to the White House.

“Evan Gershkovich, the Reporter from The Wall Street Journal, who is being held by Russia, will be released almost immediately after the Election, but definitely before I assume Office. He will be HOME, SAFE, AND WITH HIS FAMILY,” Trump said.
