Jindal in 2012? Maybe Not, Reveals Chris Matthews Show
TVNewser has obtained a partial early transcript from this weekend’s, “The Chris Matthews Show.” Panelist John Heilemann of New York Magazine relayed an interesting “rumor” about Lousiana Gov. Bobby Jindal:
I was down in New Orleans, and I heard a great rumor that Bobby Jindal, who we were just talking about as a potential presidential candidate for the Republican party, is thinking about giving up the governorship and running for Senate against David Vitter, or for Vitter’s seat if Vitter doesn’t run. He’s got a terrible budget situation down there. He’s thrown himself into a Republican primary up in Baton Rouge that he’s going to apparently get creamed in. And I think what’s interesting is that that tells you that he’s got the message that 2012 isn’t his year.
/what the heck, it’s that kinda day ….

Hostage dies as French attack Somali pirates
A French hostage and two pirates died Friday in a rescue operation off Somalia, the French president’s office in Paris said Friday.
Four hostages, including a child, were freed from the hijacked yacht after almost a week of captivity, Nicolas Sarkozy’s office said.
The French military decided to move in when pirates refused their offers and increased threats against the hostages, it said.

Best of luck to ya, I had a 18 month bout with unemployment a few years back, I nearly went insane. I had the money to tide over but, in hindsite, I allowed myself to get caught in a trap of inactivity and depression. Thankfully, my dear, now departed, father was in my corner all the way and never lost hope for me, even when I allowed myself to lose hope.
Get out, get active, network like hell and follow up on anything, sometimes its what you least expect that will lead you to what you want. I applied for jobs at the same level that I was at, to no avail. I did some temp work at jobs that were beneath my skill and it was horrible. I finally started applying for stuff above what I had done, and that is how I found the great job I am in today. Best of luck, be persistent and focused, good people always outlast bad times.

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.— Martin Luther King, Jr.
I’ve been off the internet over the last few days for the most part, and I just spent a nauseating five minutes over on Gellers’ pathetic site reading through her inflammatory, libelous screed about Charles.
Then I come back to the pool of sanity here at LGF to read this refreshing quote. It’s like a breath of fresh air.
NEVER stop speaking out about the things that matter, Charles… keep exposing evil, hatred and ignorance for what it is and keep right on taking the high road.
People of emnity are always going to attack and try to tear down a man of principal and integrity, because that man is everything that they aren’t and everything that they never will be… and they know it.
Intelligent people of good character can always differentiate between the man who brags that he has principles, and the man who doesn’t have to brag because he actually has them. Spencer and Geller fall into the former category, they have proven that beyond a shadow of a doubt and all on their own. It’s probably why they feel so comfortable sharing bedbugs.
You my friend, most certainly fall into the latter category. You’ve clearly been given the gift of discernment, and you use it very well. I pray that you will continue to use that discernment and this blog to stand against hatred and ignorance, and stand up for what’s right.
My involvement here at LGF will be somewhat limited for the next couple of days, but I wanted to stop by a wish you a pleasant, restful weekend.

Odd story of the day: Liberal activists assault Pullman (WA) armory
Two men visiting Pullman on a tour promoting civic involvement have been arrested for allegedly attempting to break into the National Guard Armory.Thomas H. Goldstein, 44, and Andrew T. Crittendon, 26, are being held at the Whitman County Jail in Colfax on charges of second-degree attempted burglary and third-degree malicious mischief.
Pullman Daily News has a story today about two activists from something called the Washington Bus Project. After spending the day trying to urge Washington State University students to get involved in politics, the two were arrested inside the barbed-wire fence at the Pullman Armory.
The Bus Project is allied with liberal and Democratic causes and travels the state in, that’s right, a bus. The bus was in Pullman for WSU’s Civic Engagement Week.
What are they going to do? Chain themselves to a gun locker?

From me, too.
I’ve found that periods of unemployment, trying though they may be, can also offer you time that you might not otherwise have for personal growth and introspection, career growth, and the strengthening of relationships that have been neglected due to time constraints. You’ll find another job, eventually, so be at peace… and try to remember in the meantime that unemployment is a period of transition and nothing more, and one that can truly be a blessing in disguise.

Credibility And The Tea Party Movement
In a video at link below - after some brief side discussion between people with both the Libertarian Party and the Constitution Party - a fairly obvious nutcase gets up in an open mic forum and makes some outlandish claims. Contrary to Charles’s claim the audience as a whole is not eating it up. But of course Andrew Sullivan is quick to jump in to use it as proof that the Tea Party movement is deranged.I neither know, nor care what lgf’s problem with Glenn Beck is. But in allowing his own bias to get the best of him, Charles is casting aspersions where they don’t belong and squandering his own credibility in doing so. It’s unfortunate to see.

That horse’s a** McGuinty is going to shove an 8%+ tax increase down our throats in the name of a harmonized tax and EVERYTHING from groceries to RSP’s will be taxed. I figured out that I will be paying an extra $2,400 per year just to survive my hydro, groceries, rent, clothing and anything I need to subsist and I just don’t think I can make it without becoming poor. I live very frugally as it is and I’m starting to really panic.
Liberalism IS A MENTAL DISORDER and I fear the horse’s a** will feed billions of our money into wind farms. I am so angry I can hardly think clearly.

I love Medicine Hat! As a child, my family spent many happy summer weeks camping at Elkwater Nat’l Park - fond memories of that part of the world, I tell you what.
I was born in an Indian village called Rocky Mountain House. :) We grew up in a two bedroom farmhouse with no running water and spotty electricity until it burned to the ground and we relocated to Calgary.

It was a CNN reporter, Dan Lothian, who asked Robert Gibbs whether or not Obama bowed. (made Gibbs get uncomfortable, and Gibbs had to claim it wasn’t “a bow.”) Wolf Blitzer had panelists on (political people) and he asked them “Did Obama bow?” and then showed the clip. The republican spokesperson said it’s wasn’t all that big a deal, but that it did seem to her to be a bow. Later CNN also showed irate editorials about Obama’s bow (one from an editorial — Philadelphia Inquirer? — which was enraged about the shocking disregard for Presidential protocols when greeting monarchs, etc.)…Some of the desk people (forget the name) also mentioned how late this story is….(btw, when did Obama bow? — was that on April 1, ? if it was, I’m surprised Robert Gibbs didn’t laugh it off as an April Fool’s gag…)

re: #227 Nevergiveup
I assume we can all see how this incident is a microcosm of our role in the world. The only thing preventing the Navy from destroying the pirate escape boat, and probably killing the hostage, is an inherent respect for life. We’ll pay millions to save a single life, we’ll sacrifice our own lives to keep innocents safe. It’s a very noble sentiment, and one that all countries should aspire to, but it leaves us somehow powerless in the face of 4 illiterates with a raft and AK’s.
We should make this distinction to the world when they begin the moral equivalence game vis a vis Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.
Sorry for the ramble, just really hoping that the Captain gets out okay and all of this maneuvering hasn’t been for naught.

You lose credibility by not speaking out for what’s right, not staying silent. Is Mr Riehl in favor of book burning or does he just think book burner are a asset to conservatives ?

re: #273 Lincolntf
I assume we can all see how this incident is a microcosm of our role in the world. The only thing preventing the Navy from destroying the pirate escape boat, and probably killing the hostage, is an inherent respect for life. We’ll pay millions to save a single life, we’ll sacrifice our own lives to keep innocents safe. It’s a very noble sentiment, and one that all countries should aspire to, but it leaves us somehow powerless in the face of 4 illiterates with a raft and AK’s.
We should make this distinction to the world when they begin the moral equivalence game vis a vis Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.Sorry for the ramble, just really hoping that the Captain gets out okay and all of this maneuvering hasn’t been for naught.
quite true…to get this situation back in our favor somebody is gonna die and I’d rather it not be our guy…give the pirates whatever they want and be done with it…all this deep water fire power is ridiculous…get our guy back and then go take care of business ashore

Thanks for those laughs. I desperately needed them. As I am a little shell shocked as my wife just this morning announced to me that she is going to divorce me.
The reason is irreconcilable differences as we drifted apart on so many subjects and points of opinion.
It came along for quite some time.No kids but the cat will stay with me.
We are going to have an amicable divorce as much as possible. There is still feelings, yet we’ve drifted way too far apart from each other. :-(I am afraid that it’s too late for any mending.
I am deeply sorry..I have a close friend that is getting a divorce..He told me this last week..The news was a total shock.. If I can offer any support please let me know..My nic is blue..email me.

Giving the pirates what they want is no longer an option, from the “world opinion” political viewpoint. Even the French sacrificed a hostage today in a statistically successful raid.

Somali pirates sail German ship to standoff scene
Somali pirates holding foreign sailors on a hijacked German ship are heading towards a lifeboat where they are holding an American captain hostage. It is thought they intend to use the ship as a shield.
A pirate source told Reuters that the pirates are counting on the fact that the Americans will not destroy the German ship in any attempt to rescue Captain Richard Phillips
Four heavily armed pirates holding the US Navy captain hostage in a lifeboat far off the Somali coast in the Indian Ocean since Wednesday have been communicating with other pirate gangs who are now sailing a hijacked German ship to the site to avoid being attacked should US warships launch a rescue attempt.
…
“We are not afraid,” say pirates
Two boats full of heavily-armed fellow pirates have taken up position near lifeboat but are too nervous to come near due to the presence of foreign naval ships including US warships.
“We are not afraid of the Americans,” one of the pirates told Reuters by satellite phone on behalf of the pirates holding Phillips, far off the Somali coast in the Indian Ocean. “We will defend ourselves if attacked.”
Well, at least someone’s taking action to end this farce.

Never have been in one I can only guess that you’re probably right. Nevertheless a liquor-gulping bar with a pool table is greatly missed.
Bigger US cities often have British-style pubs — especially “brewpubs,” where microbrews are produced on the premises. Many sports bars approximate the feeling of a pub as well. The two key factors seem to be: 1) an emphasis on beer/wine, rather than hard liquor, as the drink of choice; and 2) a kitchen that serves hot food.
And I agree — a pool table is a huge plus, if not a requirement.

Why are we talking about bombing the pirate base and/ or the lifeboat with the US captain on it. Why is the MOTHER SHIP not at the bottom of the ocean,,,, NOW !
Why not sink the ships at the bases? I’m not calling for entire villages to be razed but for surgical strikes at legitimate military targets. If we know where the mother ship is it should be sunk, I’m pretty sure that there are few if any innocents on board. As for hostage situations, you negotiate until they start to rape, torture, or kill hostages.

You must admit, though, there is something very special about a British pub. The word itself is a diminution of “public house,” which is to say, a meeting place for the community. I’ve always preferred the open, friendly atmosphere of pubs, whether in the UK or elsewhere, to the dark, liquor-gulping, neo-speakeasy environment of stereotypical American bars.
I know what you’re saying. But as much as I try I can’t stop my mind from thinking that every time I hear the words public house, I think public restroom.

It’s a large scale problem.
Pentagon officials say pirates are holding 15 ships off the Somali coast. And according to U.S. Navy statistics, pirates attacked four ships between Saturday and Monday. The area involved — off the coast of Somalia and Kenya as well as the Gulf of Aden — equals more than 1.1 million square miles, roughly four times the size of Texas, or the size of the Mediterranean and Red Sea combined. The length of the Somali coastline is roughly the same length as the entire Eastern Seaboard of the United States, according to U.S. Navy statistics.

Fine. promise the pirates whatever they want, get the captain freed and then blow the fuck out of them. By definiton pirates don’t operate according to any rules so rules of negotiation should not apply to them either. And if the Pirates fucking Union or whatever the hell they have objects….blow the fuck out of them too.
No quarter for pirates.
Absolfuckingutely The Navy already said the boat is going nowhere, but I fear the insurance companies might make a deal that would save the captain and thus the pirates.

He is in this position because every time these pirates take a ship and some hostages, the shipping companies, through their insurers or directly, pay these criminals off. It has become another expense and they don’t seem to realize that it’s a losing game. It goes on and on until somebody, like Jefferson, stands up and says “no more.”

It seems it’s Reuters that characterized it as an “annoying distraction”. From the Reuters story:
Ragtag teams of modern-day Blackbeards are posing an annoying distraction for Barack Obama, forcing him to add Somalia to an already long list of foreign policy challenges.
Do you think Reuters has any clue that part of the normal job of being President of the U.S. includes regularly dealing with a “long list of foreign policy challenges”?
And that characterizing the kidnapping of a US citizen and holding him for ramsom might, just might, would be better described as something more important than an “annoying distraction”?
I wish the O would make some sort of statement about this situation. Perhaps there are things going on behind the scenes that we aren’t aware of. Let’s hope.

re: #313 Rancher
Why are we talking about bombing the pirate base and/ or the lifeboat with the US captain on it. Why is the MOTHER SHIP not at the bottom of the ocean,,,, NOW !
The “mother ship,” such as it was, was a very small skiff that was used to board the American ship. It was sunk by the pirates as soon as they came on board, presumably to prevent escape - or defections.
When the American crew fought back, four of the pirates took the captain hostage and held him in a lifeboat, which they then insisted by put in the water. Apparently, the crew either drained the lifeboat of fuel or neglected to tell the pirates that it was empty. Hence the current situation.
There’s no “mother ship” to sink. The pirates use very small boats, sometimes in groups, that are stolen from various sources and which they don’t mind losing.
There seems to be an awful lot of chatter circulating that indicates a large Naval buildup in the area. Despite the somewhat disturbing enthusiasm for wanton destruction, the first concern is the hostages. As long as they remain safe and unthreatened, it’s fine with me if the Navy just lets them float there. They aren’t going anywhere, and neither are we.
The French raided another ship this afternoon, and one of the hostages on board was killed. Not an outcome to be wished for, and an easy outcome to reach if care isn’t exercised.
There’s plenty of time for retribution later. Right now, the emphasis ought to be on getting the captain and any other hostages safely released.

Your point?
During the election and during the Israeli action, Charles had ample opportunity to post juicy stories and pictures quickly. He was frequently “several hours behind the curve” on a few stories.
He debunked a couple of faux photos in Rathergate fashion that started to make the rounds on the internet, and proved stuff like the Rathergate “throbbing memo” (I was on SBVFT at the time …)
I disagree with him philosophically on an issue or three.
That said, he runs the site (blog) that IMO contains the most accurate information of any of them.
What my point is boils down to who I trust, and how quickly I trust them.
Charles wins. I’m more like Ace on the political scale, but I trust Charles’ judgment better when it comes to publishing stories.

The Monday-morning quarterbacking and convoluted spinning being done simply to find a way to lay blame at the Administration’s feet in this incident is wearing more than a little thin. WA is a stand your ground state. Case law makes it practically a Castle Law state. The person defending has to articulate a reasonable fear of serious injury or death. That has been frequently interpreted as I was afraid he was in my house.
I’ve lived in states all over this country, and whenever possible I’ve lived in rural areas. I believe it to be smart to check with the local law enforcement authorities to guage their opinions on self-defense.
The general concensus has boiled down to, “I’ve never arrested anyone for shooting someone that fell dead lying on the threshold.”
Generally followed by, *whispered* “We don’t spend a whole lot of time looking at drag marks in the lawn, either.”

re: #709 DEZes
We had a local guy driving up the road, as he came up on an oncoming truck they clipped Mirrors, both drivers stopped.
But one ran to the other driver and dragged him half out of his vehicle, and started beating him with a tire tool.
He managed to pull a pistol and kill his attacker.
They tried to prosecute the man on the grounds that he could have fled, even though the assault left him partially paralyzed.
He was acquitted.
Last summer in downtown Seattle, crazy guy out of the blue starts attacking a guy walking along. The crazy guy beats the other the guy to the ground and starts kicking him. Guy on the ground decides enough of this, draws, shoots and kills his unarmed assailant. He wasn’t even charged.
In another case a guy hears noise at his back door, grabs a rifle and investigates. This scares off 3 guys, once the 3 guys are off the property one turns and reaches toward his waist band. Home owner fires, and kill the guy, who it turns out was unarmed. Investigation took a couple of months but no charges filed.

Poems by Jack Prelutsky
I’m making a pizza the size of the sun,
a pizza that’s sure to weigh more than a ton,
a pizza too massive to pick up and toss,
a pizza resplendent with oceans of sauce.
I’m topping my pizza with mountains of cheese,
with acres of peppers, pimentos, and peas,
with mushrooms, tomatoes, and sausage galore,
with every last olive they had at the store.
My pizza is sure to be one of a kind,
my pizza will leave other pizzas behind,
my pizza will be a delectable treat
that all who love pizza are welcome to eat.
The oven is hot, I believe it will take
a year and a half for my pizza to bake.
I hardly can wait till my pizza is done,
my wonderful pizza the size of the sun.

I’m going to partially disagree with Sharmuta here.
Women are indeed “undervalued” in the workplace, even by men who don’t realize they are doing it. Women just do not get listened to in the same way a man does. I don’t know if it’s misogyny, or just some sort of response we humans have to deeper voices vs. lighter, higher voices.
But I also think women dress mostly for other women, not for men.
Most of the men I know pay no attention whatsoever to the day-to-day dress of the women around them. Oh sure, they’ll stop and stare if a women is dressed provocatively, but then they go about their business. They don’t compare that woman to others in the workplace.
But other women pay very close attention, and do indeed compare one against another.

He is in this position because every time these pirates take a ship and some hostages, the shipping companies, through their insurers or directly, pay these criminals off. It has become another expense and they don’t seem to realize that it’s a losing game. It goes on and on until somebody, like Jefferson, stands up and says “no more.”
I’m wondering if the reason they don’t just send in the SEALS to sink the boats surreptitiously is that the insurers would cause a stink. Is that what is really holding this up?

No.
We’re talking about a 28 foot lifeboat. Modern lifeboats are really damn hard to sink. I haven’t seen this one, but they typically have double hulls filled with closed-cell foam; they’ll happily keep floating even if filled to the brim with water.
Then there’s the issue of pushing the pirates into unpleasant behavior in retaliation. As long as the captain is not in imminent danger, there’s no reason to do anything other than simply wait things out.
The made-for-TV stuff can wait until the captain’s safety is compromised. Or until the captain is safely in Naval hands.
