I was vaccinated in 1976 (during the abbreviated vaccination thing that President Ford did - 40 million people were vaccinated before they decided to stop it). There was good reason to push vaccination then - the virus was very similar to the 1918 swine flu, and more than 20 million people died during that pandemic.

There's a BETTER reason to get vaccinated now than in 1976. This strain is not entirely similar to any other strain -- so no one has immunity to it from prior exposure.

One catch: there ISN'T ANY vaccine for this strain at present, and there won't be appreciable quantities available for months.

Wouldn't research labs (like those in the CDC) culture ANY virus they were interested in so they would have material to use up in tests? So I'd suspect that labs all around the world have various swine flu strains cultured so they can work on vaccines, etc.

My domestic shorthair was abandoned - roomie found her in ivy - yelling - outside her school and brought her home via a trip to the vet, together with formula, etc. She was maybe one-two weeks old - eyes not open yet. Vet said she had a 50/50 chance of survival.

My Siamese male cat adopted her, so she ended up being mine. Siamese did the cleaning and protecting from all harm by screaming at the top of his lungs detail; I did the feeding every three hours of every day for weeks detail.

The Siamese is purebred, with one of those long names.

It's not a slip-up or an admission of anything, except that the laboratory was doing its job. To culture a virus (or a bacterium, mycobacterium, fungus, etc.) just means to capture a microorganism from an infected host, and grow the microorganism in the laboratory. My Siamese male cat adopted her, so she ended up being mine. Siamese did the cleaning and protecting from all harm by screaming at the top of his lungs detail; I did the feeding every three hours of every day for weeks detail.

The Siamese is purebred, with one of those long names.

King County has agreed to pay conservative blogger Stefan Sharkansky $225,000 to settle a public-records lawsuit he brought over the county's delay in releasing documents about the 2004 governor's election.

Sharkansky filed his request in December 2004, seeking a list of everyone who voted in the county in the election that year, but the county didn't satisfy the request until more than two years later.

County spokeswoman Carolyn Duncan said in an e-mail that information in the documents provided to Sharkansky would not have changed the outcome of the razor-thin race between Democrat Chris Gregoire and Republican Dino Rossi. Gregoire won by 133 votes following two recounts and a trial in Chelan County Superior Court.

Sharkansky, however, says the documents show that King County elections officials counted hundreds of ineligible ballots — including double votes and votes from unregistered or improperly registered voters. He says they could, indeed, have changed the outcome of the election.

Koop was amazing before he became Surgeon General and tackled AIDS, nicotine, sex education, etc. during the "square" Reagan years. Thank you again, for sharing his story.

The below story recounts the events surrounding the rescue of the captain of the MV Alabama from his captors, Somalia pirates. I received it from a Navy friend who claims it was written by a retired Admiral so it is third hand but I believe accurate, politics aside.

The Navy SEAL team, SEAL TEAM SIX, from NSWC briefed the OSC (Commander Castellano, CO BAINBRIDGE) on how they could rescue the captain from the life boat with swimmers– “Combat Swimmers,” per se. That plan was denied by POTUS because it put the captain in danger– and, involved killing the pirates.

The FBI negotiators arrived on scene, and talked the pirates into sending their wounded man over for treatment Saturday morning. Later that afternoon, the SEAL’s sent over their RHIB with food and water to recon the life boat but the pirates shot at it. They could have taken them out then (from being fired upon) but were denied again being told that the captain was not in “imminent danger.” The FBI negotiators calmed the situation by informing the pirates of threatening weather as they could see storm clouds closing from the horizon, and offered to tow the life boat. The pirates agreed, and BAINBRIDGE took them under tow in their wake at 30 meters– exactly 30 meters, which is exactly the distance the SEALs practice their shooting skills.

With the lifeboat under tow, riding comfortably bow-down on BAINBRIDGE’s wake-wave (”rooster tail”), had a 17-second period of harmonic motion, and at the end of every half-period (8.5 seconds) was steady on. The light-enhanced (infra-red heat) monocular scopes on the SEAL’s .308 caliber Mark 11 Mod 0 H&K suppressor-fitted sniper rifles easily imaged their target very clearly. Pirates in a life boat at 30-meters could be compared to fish in a barrel. All that was necessary was to take out the plexiglass window so that it would not deflect the trajectory of the high velocity .308 round. So, a sniper (one of four) with a wad-cutter round (a flaxen sabot) would take out the window a split second before the kill-shot– no change in sight-picture, just the window blowing out, clean.

Now, here’s the part BHO’s “whiz kids” knew as well as the Navy hierarchy, including CO BAINBRIDGE and CO SEAL TEAM SIX. It’s the law in Article 19 of Appendix L in the “Convention of the High Seas” that the Commanding Officer of a US Ship on the high seas is obligated to respond to distress signals from any flagged ship (US or otherwise), and protect the life and property thereof when deemed to be in IMMINENT DANGER. So, in the final analysis, it would be Captain Castellano call as to “Imminent Danger,” and that he alone was obligated (duty bound) to act accordingly.

Pointed out a couple things to some of the older customers with a request that they not say who told them, and quit shortly thereafter. I don't know that I would buy into the eating meat will be the death of us thing. I did however back in the mid 90's do a network install at a turkey and chicken processing plant in the UK. I was told it was 3 weeks from egg cell first splitting until it was on the shelf at the grocery store. It put me off chicken that was not free range and meat in general for a bit.

There is a lot of tech that goes into veg as well these days. It's part of trying to feed 6 billion.

How does a virus (or ANY pathogen) selectively effect most seriously the strongest potential host (young, strong persons).... the usual fear mongering tells us to inoculate the old, immunocompromised, and the very young.

Am I to assume the usual potential victims are somehow not at risk to the same degree as the stated group?

Vaccines not even designed to address the specific footprint of this particular strain aren't available. Masks won't help; wash your hands, cover your face when you sneeze/cough and STAY HOME when you are ill are the best practical defenses (besides eating healthy and upping the antioxidant intake).

One more thing; epidemiologically speaking.... any pathogen (virus, bacteria, whatever) doesn't mutate as more virulent. The longer the pathogen is in the environment and is diluted by interaction with multitudes of hosts it is lessened in its pathogenicity and virulence.

The bell curve of incident of infection doesn't relate to pathogenicity.

It has to do with people in the 25-45 age group having a strong immune system. The strong immune system, once infected with the virus, tends to turn against it's self and causes a meltdown. So, in the case of the H type virus, it's good to have a good immune system but not a great one. You don't want to take immune boosters if you get this type of flu. It increases your chances of killing you.

Well, to be fair to the Mexican government, they are a little busy with their drug war right now. They probably weren't expecting to have to deal with something like this....and they had to send samples to the US and Canada for full analysis.

I'm not as willing to cut our government as much slack, however. I'm pretty sure they still haven't announced any travel warnings or restrictions, which means that carriers or folks who are infected but not showing symptoms yet are still travelling freely from Mexico to the US.

I don't know that I would buy into the eating meat will be the death of us thing. I did however back in the mid 90's do a network install at a turkey and chicken processing plant in the UK. I was told it was 3 weeks from egg cell first splitting until it was on the shelf at the grocery store. It put me off chicken that was not free range and meat in general for a bit.

There is a lot of tech that goes into veg as well these days. It's part of trying to feed 6 billion.

Does that make it right? Small farms were and are very capable of handling world demands for food until the fast food giants came in and changed the playing field. They eliminated all the small farms in the US, and then moved on third world counties who were plied with genetically modified grains by companies like Dupont. No conspiracy, just good ole GREED. If you ask me , it all stinks. I did animal health pharmaceutical advertising back in the late 80s for about 5 years. It made me sick to my stomach as I learned the truth. It's 20 years later, I can only imagine what drug concoctions have been hatched over the past 2 decades.

We can feed 6 billion and the small farms of the early 1900s are capable. Just fast food giants bought them all out. And we the greedy out of control people want our strawberries when we want them. For small farms it was a matter of toe the line or we don't buy from you. In other words, you're out of business. Plus we fucked up 3rd world villages who were producing their own food. It was The American way, or no way.

I mean look at the past 5 years alone with one contaminated hamburger patty results in 25 million being thrown away. Bigger isn't always better. We're in for BIG TROUBLE. I don't need an Alex Jones to spin his BS. to see a predictable pattern.


By the way, up to 1000 suspected have been reported so far in Mexico alone. If within the next week the number of dead rises another 50 or so, I don't think there's much to worry about. But if by this time next Saturday 2000 people are dead from this thing. We're fucked.

The other thing we've done is cut done on biodiversity of hundreds of crops. So if one gets some parasite or virus, etc...most likely all do. Before, there was way more diversity so what would affect one food group, would not necessarily affect another.

Wasn't in the car long enough to hear what she was saying previously or after, but she's highly skeptical of this whole thing. In the meantime there's no tightening the borders. That's crazy.

I live rural an hour drive from a large city. There are farms all around me animal, fruit and veg. There are of course those that are big farm industry places that supply companies like Mars with milk (20 minute drive away to the local Mars plant). There are also several farmers that have been supplying the locals like me with off the market everything. I get local eggs, local meat sometimes usually not (the big farm product is better IMO), local fruit and veg when it's season just because I like to support the local guy.

There are more organic farms and produce stores near me and in the city then ever before because the demand is there. The science is that organic is no better for safety or in vitamin content. There is some question as to the safety of growing organic based on using strictly manure for fertalizing and ecoli entering the food chain that way.

While pumping foods with science is not natural and there is the possibility of adverse side effects I don't believe anyone would do it if they actually thought it made the products unsafe. It's not just greed either. If it were not for the many advances in farming we could not feed all the people on the planet. Just look at places like India and a lot of Africa. If it was not for farming advances those people would literally be dead or starving to death. They are as it is. It's a lot easier to be picky and complain when you live in a land of abundance.

Modern farming might not be perfect. I agree with you 1 bad animal in the supply can cause huge recalls but that is often about erring on the side of safety.

It seems less likely to me that this strain of flu transmit itself by airbourne means than by others means. It is already hot in Mexico, but it is cold that permits the flu virus to survive longer in the air. If this is NOT an airbourne contagion, as I suggest, then how else can it be tranmitted?

The virus is spread through contact or inhaling. It is not strictly airborne. For instance, an infected person coughs or sneezes into their hand and touches a hand railing in the subway. Along you come and you grab the hand railing then rub your eye. The sick person is sitting near you in the subway and sneezes. The particles become airborne and you then inhale a particle or two. That is why, ideally, you would wear a mask and biohazard gloves or make sure you have no cuts or hangnails on your hands and practice fastidious hygiene.

Earlier pandemics had more to do with public health issues than pathogenesis or virulence of the responsible organism.

Autoimmune imbalance is not a normal event; H class virus is no more likely to initiate this phenomena than any other. Healthy immune systems can fight off any pathogen effectively if supported with the proper micro nutrients or pharmacy (in worst cases).

The scaremongering for our Imperial Obamament is bad enough.... we don't need uniformed option contaminating the discussion of FACT.

Entirely untrue... The viruses DNA (or RNA as the case may be) has a finite shelf life. Without being reproduced by hosts it will decay.
The longest lasting viruses like smallpox can last for over a decade, but most can't last anywhere near that long.

Again, completely wrong!

The influenza epidemic in the early 1900's was a case of the influenza virus killing off people with healthy immune systems while leaving the old mostly untouched. The same thing seems to be happening with this flu. This is caused by the immune reaction known as a "cytokine storm."

This isn't the only virus to cause damage through autoimmune problems, Hep D (yes D) causes autoimmune attacks on the patient's corneas.

Flu pandemics happen when the virus mutates enough that our immune systems can't recognize it as similar to other flu viruses. This can happen from it crossing the species barrier (it mutates a while in another species then crosses over to humans again with a lot of differences from other influenzas).
