Bad Craziness Watch: Alex Jones Pushing Swine Flu Conspiracy

Moonbats • Views: 24,382

Here comes the next wave of bad craziness, promoted as always by one of the worst raving nutjobs in America, Alex Jones (friend of Fox News contributor Judge Andrew Napoitano): the swine flu conspiracy theory.

Medical Director: Swine Flu Was “Cultured In A Laboratory”.

UPDATE at 4/25/09 6:31:34 pm:

Note: there is nothing strange about the timing of this outbreak.

We’ve been overdue for a global flu pandemic for years. These viruses have been breeding and mutating and evolving at a rate that’s hard for human beings to comprehend.

If anyone reading LGF still doubts evolution, this is your proof that it exists.

I was vaccinated in 1976 (during the abbreviated vaccination thing that President Ford did - 40 million people were vaccinated before they decided to stop it). There was good reason to push vaccination then - the virus was very similar to the 1918 swine flu, and more than 20 million people died during that pandemic.

There's a BETTER reason to get vaccinated now than in 1976. This strain is not entirely similar to any other strain -- so no one has immunity to it from prior exposure.

One catch: there ISN'T ANY vaccine for this strain at present, and there won't be appreciable quantities available for months.

Of course it was cultured in a laboratory. The CIA developed it and released it in a train station in downtown Mexico City...that way, the drug cartels will be so panicked they will go ballistic, toppling the government of Mexico, allowing us to move in to fix the damage (using Halliburton as the prime contractor of course). See, we get Mexico's oil at below market prices and we enrich all the folks in our inside circle who have a piece of Halliburton.

Just like we did in Iraq, we'll steal all the oil, and there's nothing you can do stop us...HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA.

After that, MELECH went to "the Girls" of my Boss's Family. They got tired of him - AFTER they Neutered Him! - and put him on a "slimming" diet. He came back to me again, mal-nourished again, and a Capon of a Dog. MELECH is back, healthy and loved. He is sterile. In the Major Leagues, Batting .667 works. Hope it will work as well for MELECH. That is all.

This one might not make it all the way but if you look back at a lot of the stuff that most conservatives are upset about these days there's a good chance it will lead back to Alex Jones/Lew Rockwell types.

This year's flu shot contained two (A) strains (H1N1 and H3N2) as well as a (B) strain. This swine flu is an (A) strain of type H1N1. Though it is different and not entirely protective the flu shot this year likely offers some degree of protection.

They had jolly well better culture it in a laboratory. We need to know what we're up against, and quickly.

But this thing wasn't created in a laboratory. Nobody on the bad guy's side of the fence knows enough, just yet, to bring it off. Nobody on the good guy's side of the fence would do it, even if anybody did know enough, which nobody does.

Resurrecting an old pathogen, or modifying one in the lab to make it more virulent, is just possible. Cooking up a new nasty from scratch, nope.

The DHS memo started from a WND reporter. The FEMA Camp stuff started with Alex Jones. The rumor that the FBI infiltrated the Tea Parties strted with Alexjones. There's a pretty long list. This one might not make it all the way but if you look back at a lot of the stuff that most conservatives are upset about these days there's a good chance it will lead back to Alex Jones/Lew Rockwell types.

So your problem is with Alex Jones then? You just added everyone else to throw some more Republicans in the mix?

So, can we chalk this conspiracy theory up to "fear of science"?

Like Globull Warming, Creationism and the Vaccine paranoia?

The fact are that sooner or later a nasty germ will make it's rounds --be very, very good at mutating and present a signficant challenge. I'd venture to guess that alot of these really nasty germs have already done this, but the Scientists got to work and the systems were in place and the germ was contained. Of course, this wouldn't be heard about because it was a tragedy that didn't happen.

So, when a nasty germ does become a tragedy -- the fear of science in little minds looks to boogie man explanations.

Wouldn't research labs (like those in the CDC) culture ANY virus they were interested in so they would have material to use up in tests? So I'd suspect that labs all around the world have various swine flu strains cultured so they can work on vaccines, etc.

Conspiracy theorists are all the same, swap that phrase for "pull it" or whatever it was with the 911 troofer nuts, and you have the same arguments (or anti-vaccine whackos). All conspiracy believers seem to share the same pathologies, resulting in interchangeable arguments.

“This strain of swine influenza that’s been cultured in a laboratory is something that’s not been seen anywhere actually in the United States and the world, so this is actually a new strain of influenza that’s been identified,” said Dr. John Carlo, Dallas Co. Medical Director (video clip here).

Was this a slip-up or an admission that this new super-strain of swine influenza was deliberately cultured in a laboratory and released?

How fucking stupid is Alex Jones?

Rhetorical question... sorry.

Yes, the strain was "cultured in a laboratory"... meaning, doctors took sputum samples from victims, cultured them in a laboratory to produce a quantity of the pathogen sufficient for testing, and tested them. Ever heard of getting a "throat culture" done to check for strep, Alex? Did you think that meant your doctor was creating strep to infect you with it?

My domestic shorthair was abandoned - roomie found her in ivy - yelling - outside her school and brought her home via a trip to the vet, together with formula, etc. She was maybe one-two weeks old - eyes not open yet. Vet said she had a 50/50 chance of survival.

My Siamese male cat adopted her, so she ended up being mine. Siamese did the cleaning and protecting from all harm by screaming at the top of his lungs detail; I did the feeding every three hours of every day for weeks detail.

The Siamese is purebred, with one of those long names.

“This strain of swine influenza that’s been cultured in a laboratoryis something that’s not been seen anywhere actually in the United States and the world, so this is actually a new strain of influenza that’s been identified,” said Dr. John Carlo, Dallas Co. Medical Director.

Was this a slip-up or an admission that this new super-strain of swine influenza was deliberately cultured in a laboratory and released?

It's not a slip-up or an admission of anything, except that the laboratory was doing its job. To culture a virus (or a bacterium, mycobacterium, fungus, etc.) just means to capture a microorganism from an infected host, and grow the microorganism in the laboratory. For example, if your doctor thinks you have a strep throat, he or she will do a throat culture, i.e. swab your throat, stick the swab in a bacterium-friendly medium, and try to culture the Streptococcus bacterium. If a doctor thinks you have pneumonia or a urinary tract infection, he or she will do a sputum or urine culture, respectively, to see if some bad bacterium is growing in there. If it is, the lab will then subject the cultured organism to various antibiotics, to see which ones will kill it, and should therefore be administered to you.

The fact that this virus was "cultured in the laboratory" just means that they found it in a person, and then managed to isolate it and grow it in the lab, so that they can study it more, see what drugs help to kill it, try to make a vaccine, etc. There's no story here whatsoever.

There aren't quite as many dogs needing rescuing as cats, because most people like dogs, but not everyone likes cats.

We hand-raised a litter of 4 kittens when the mom died when they were 3 weeks old - we've rescued 2 litters from drowning in the drain where the mama-cat liked to have her kittens not realizing the drain would fill with water during a rain - and my best story - my dog found an abandoned kitten in a ditch, and the kitten followed him home!

There was good reason to push vaccination then - the virus was very similar to the 1918 swine flu, and more than 20 million people died during that pandemic.

Let's see. There was the 1918 flu pandemic. Killed millions and debilitated several times that amount.

There was the Hong Kong flu.

Now, we're dealing with swine flu.

It was only a matter of time. Will this be the pandemic scientists and medical experts had dreaded or will it fizzle? No one knows.

A pandemic involving influenza has not only been overdue for years, but with the way people can travel around the world, the threat from an outbreak is multiplied.

And it's quite possibly here in the US. A Queens, NY school may have a case.

The US deals with pandemic flu here and maps outbreaks here.

It was a very different time the 1980's. I believe Reagan erred by failing to recognize AIDs. He did fund some research, but didn't speak of it hardly.
I think that's the first any only negative I've ever stated with regard to President Ronald Reagan.

I remember some patient advocacy groups complaining that Reagan had never even uttered the word "AIDS" publicly, let alone ordered adequate resources to fight it.

I might be able to find a few negatives in the Iran-Contra issue, too, but that would be a whole other can of worms to open.

That's twice I've mentioned worms in this thread. I think I've never posted a comment mentioning worms before. What do you suppose that means?

The Late Pres. Ronald Reagan was tarred with the misinformation that HE DIDN'T CARE about AIDS sufferers - WRONG! If nothing else, NANCY saw to it.
Former President "Bush 43" committed the US to $Billions in "AIDS-AID" to Africa. The "First Black President" of the US, William Jefferson (Blythe) Clinton committed $0.00 to African AIDS-AID. Further comments are superfluous.

Dr. Shalit, you are right indeed.

On top of forcefully solving the Iran hostage crisis, ending Carter's inflation/recession, lifting our national malaise, giving our military the care & respect they deserved, liberating Granada, toppling the Soviet Union without a shot, and putting a smile back on our collective faces, Reagan did address AIDS.

And President Bush 43 did more for Africa than anyone is willing to acknowledge.

History will be kind to them, not their detractors.

I just saw a crawl on local TV that kind of implied that they did.

According to the New York City Department of Health:

April 25, 2009 – The Health Department is investigating a cluster of respiratory illness in a non-public school in New York City and has determined that at least 8 students have probable human swine influenza. More than 100 of the school’s students were absent several days this week due to fever, sore throats and other flu-like symptoms. The Health Department has interviewed more than 100 students or their families, and all students have had mild symptoms; none have been hospitalized. Some family members have developed similar symptoms, suggesting spread in the family.

In response to confirmed cases of swine influenza (swine flu) in Mexico, California and Texas, the New York City Health Department is working closely with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to assess the possibility of the spread of swine flu.

Last of the fallout from the '04 WA Governors election debacle.

King County settles vote-records suit from 2004 governor race

King County has agreed to pay conservative blogger Stefan Sharkansky $225,000 to settle a public-records lawsuit he brought over the county's delay in releasing documents about the 2004 governor's election.

Sharkansky filed his request in December 2004, seeking a list of everyone who voted in the county in the election that year, but the county didn't satisfy the request until more than two years later.

County spokeswoman Carolyn Duncan said in an e-mail that information in the documents provided to Sharkansky would not have changed the outcome of the razor-thin race between Democrat Chris Gregoire and Republican Dino Rossi. Gregoire won by 133 votes following two recounts and a trial in Chelan County Superior Court.

Sharkansky, however, says the documents show that King County elections officials counted hundreds of ineligible ballots — including double votes and votes from unregistered or improperly registered voters. He says they could, indeed, have changed the outcome of the election.

This one looks legit.....

Navy 3, Pirates 0 Replay

The below story recounts the events surrounding the rescue of the captain of the MV Alabama from his captors, Somalia pirates. I received it from a Navy friend who claims it was written by a retired Admiral so it is third hand but I believe accurate, politics aside.

[snip]

The Navy SEAL team, SEAL TEAM SIX, from NSWC briefed the OSC (Commander Castellano, CO BAINBRIDGE) on how they could rescue the captain from the life boat with swimmers– “Combat Swimmers,” per se. That plan was denied by POTUS because it put the captain in danger– and, involved killing the pirates.

The FBI negotiators arrived on scene, and talked the pirates into sending their wounded man over for treatment Saturday morning. Later that afternoon, the SEAL’s sent over their RHIB with food and water to recon the life boat but the pirates shot at it. They could have taken them out then (from being fired upon) but were denied again being told that the captain was not in “imminent danger.” The FBI negotiators calmed the situation by informing the pirates of threatening weather as they could see storm clouds closing from the horizon, and offered to tow the life boat. The pirates agreed, and BAINBRIDGE took them under tow in their wake at 30 meters– exactly 30 meters, which is exactly the distance the SEALs practice their shooting skills.

With the lifeboat under tow, riding comfortably bow-down on BAINBRIDGE’s wake-wave (”rooster tail”), had a 17-second period of harmonic motion, and at the end of every half-period (8.5 seconds) was steady on. The light-enhanced (infra-red heat) monocular scopes on the SEAL’s .308 caliber Mark 11 Mod 0 H&K suppressor-fitted sniper rifles easily imaged their target very clearly. Pirates in a life boat at 30-meters could be compared to fish in a barrel. All that was necessary was to take out the plexiglass window so that it would not deflect the trajectory of the high velocity .308 round. So, a sniper (one of four) with a wad-cutter round (a flaxen sabot) would take out the window a split second before the kill-shot– no change in sight-picture, just the window blowing out, clean.

Now, here’s the part BHO’s “whiz kids” knew as well as the Navy hierarchy, including CO BAINBRIDGE and CO SEAL TEAM SIX. It’s the law in Article 19 of Appendix L in the “Convention of the High Seas” that the Commanding Officer of a US Ship on the high seas is obligated to respond to distress signals from any flagged ship (US or otherwise), and protect the life and property thereof when deemed to be in IMMINENT DANGER. So, in the final analysis, it would be Captain Castellano call as to “Imminent Danger,” and that he alone was obligated (duty bound) to act accordingly.

Yes viruses come and go, but if you knew the amount of animal pharmaceuticals are injected into every living chicken, pig and cow these days, you wouldn't eat meat again.

Plus, every 6 months or so BIG PHARMA comes up with the new improved anti-parasite or anti-this or that to fatten up your pig & cows so farmer Joe can send them to market quicker. Just as we humans have become resistant to antibiotics, so have chickens, pigs and cows. Alex may be a dick head, but the way animals are raised, sprayed, injected and slaughtered for human consumption will one day be the death of us.

This link at nih.gov has more detail about C. Everett Koop and AIDS; it notes that he was indeed hamstrung to some degree by his political superiors during the first Reagan term, and that it wasn't till 1986 that the Reagan White House gave him the go-ahead to prepare an official public report on AIDS. Koop's unprecedented mass-mailing to American households endorsing condoms as part of an overall HIV-prevention strategy happened in 1988.

Clean air acts prevented those scenarios from coming true. It's known that pollution did in fact cause significant cooling in the mid century period.

PS That said, in some places in the far east, people actually do regularly wear masks in urban areas.

Just checking in here before shutting down, but I did read the post link. Sounds like something for Glenn beck to run with. Probably he will tomorrow, as he already had his script for today (what little I saw of it).

However I do want to note that "cultured" in a lab is not the same meaning as "created" in a lab, but that is probably a moot point to creationist conspiratists (did I make up that word?)./

As to wearing masks, mostly the type the type sold to construction workers to remove dust which is a million times larger particle size than a virus, that is what one can call a good example of a placebo, except while the pill type can sometimes work, this one won't.

Evening Lizards! From my college days and 4 semesters of Communicable Disease classes, I would say that this Flu outbreak has the potential to be pretty bad. Charles is right in that we are long overdue to a global pandemic. The fact that 1000 cases are being reported in Mexico, for the last 48 hours, indicates to me that the Mexican Govt is withholding alot of information. 1000 becomes 10,000 real easy and in this day and age of global travel it becomes 1,000,000,000 easily. I would suggest that since there are confirmed cases in NYC, Kansas, California and Texas the spread has begun. By the way, the masks that you need are the N95 type that can filter viruses.

How does a virus (or ANY pathogen) selectively effect most seriously the strongest potential host (young, strong persons).... the usual fear mongering tells us to inoculate the old, immunocompromised, and the very young.

Am I to assume the usual potential victims are somehow not at risk to the same degree as the stated group?

Vaccines not even designed to address the specific footprint of this particular strain aren't available. Masks won't help; wash your hands, cover your face when you sneeze/cough and STAY HOME when you are ill are the best practical defenses (besides eating healthy and upping the antioxidant intake).

One more thing; epidemiologically speaking.... any pathogen (virus, bacteria, whatever) doesn't mutate as more virulent. The longer the pathogen is in the environment and is diluted by interaction with multitudes of hosts it is lessened in its pathogenicity and virulence.

The bell curve of incident of infection doesn't relate to pathogenicity.

It has to do with people in the 25-45 age group having a strong immune system. The strong immune system, once infected with the virus, tends to turn against it's self and causes a meltdown. So, in the case of the H type virus, it's good to have a good immune system but not a great one. You don't want to take immune boosters if you get this type of flu. It increases your chances of killing you.

Well, to be fair to the Mexican government, they are a little busy with their drug war right now. They probably weren't expecting to have to deal with something like this....and they had to send samples to the US and Canada for full analysis.

I'm not as willing to cut our government as much slack, however. I'm pretty sure they still haven't announced any travel warnings or restrictions, which means that carriers or folks who are infected but not showing symptoms yet are still travelling freely from Mexico to the US.

I don't know that I would buy into the eating meat will be the death of us thing. I did however back in the mid 90's do a network install at a turkey and chicken processing plant in the UK. I was told it was 3 weeks from egg cell first splitting until it was on the shelf at the grocery store. It put me off chicken that was not free range and meat in general for a bit.

There is a lot of tech that goes into veg as well these days. It's part of trying to feed 6 billion.

Does that make it right? Small farms were and are very capable of handling world demands for food until the fast food giants came in and changed the playing field. They eliminated all the small farms in the US, and then moved on third world counties who were plied with genetically modified grains by companies like Dupont. No conspiracy, just good ole GREED. If you ask me , it all stinks. I did animal health pharmaceutical advertising back in the late 80s for about 5 years. It made me sick to my stomach as I learned the truth. It's 20 years later, I can only imagine what drug concoctions have been hatched over the past 2 decades.

We can feed 6 billion and the small farms of the early 1900s are capable. Just fast food giants bought them all out. And we the greedy out of control people want our strawberries when we want them. For small farms it was a matter of toe the line or we don't buy from you. In other words, you're out of business. Plus we fucked up 3rd world villages who were producing their own food. It was The American way, or no way.

I mean look at the past 5 years alone with one contaminated hamburger patty results in 25 million being thrown away. Bigger isn't always better. We're in for BIG TROUBLE. I don't need an Alex Jones to spin his BS. to see a predictable pattern.

By the way, up to 1000 suspected have been reported so far in Mexico alone. If within the next week the number of dead rises another 50 or so, I don't think there's much to worry about. But if by this time next Saturday 2000 people are dead from this thing. We're fucked.

From Bloomberg:

April 25 (Bloomberg) -- Mexican President Felipe Calderon declared an emergency in his country’s swine flu outbreak, giving him powers to order quarantines and suspend public events.

Authorities have canceled school at all levels in Mexico City and the state of Mexico until further notice, and the government has shut most public and government activities in the area. The emergency decree, published today in the state gazette, gives the president authority to take more action.

“The federal government under my charge will not hesitate a moment to take all, all the measures necessary to respond with efficiency and opportunity to this respiratory epidemic,” Calderon said today during a speech to inaugurate a hospital in the southern state of Oaxaca.

re: #355 So?

I live rural an hour drive from a large city. There are farms all around me animal, fruit and veg. There are of course those that are big farm industry places that supply companies like Mars with milk (20 minute drive away to the local Mars plant). There are also several farmers that have been supplying the locals like me with off the market everything. I get local eggs, local meat sometimes usually not (the big farm product is better IMO), local fruit and veg when it's season just because I like to support the local guy.

There are more organic farms and produce stores near me and in the city then ever before because the demand is there. The science is that organic is no better for safety or in vitamin content. There is some question as to the safety of growing organic based on using strictly manure for fertalizing and ecoli entering the food chain that way.

While pumping foods with science is not natural and there is the possibility of adverse side effects I don't believe anyone would do it if they actually thought it made the products unsafe. It's not just greed either. If it were not for the many advances in farming we could not feed all the people on the planet. Just look at places like India and a lot of Africa. If it was not for farming advances those people would literally be dead or starving to death. They are as it is. It's a lot easier to be picky and complain when you live in a land of abundance.

Modern farming might not be perfect. I agree with you 1 bad animal in the supply can cause huge recalls but that is often about erring on the side of safety.

re: #372 Cato

The virus is spread through contact or inhaling. It is not strictly airborne. For instance, an infected person coughs or sneezes into their hand and touches a hand railing in the subway. Along you come and you grab the hand railing then rub your eye. The sick person is sitting near you in the subway and sneezes. The particles become airborne and you then inhale a particle or two. That is why, ideally, you would wear a mask and biohazard gloves or make sure you have no cuts or hangnails on your hands and practice fastidious hygiene.

What's passing for informed discussion here is plain silly; viruses are inert until they infect a living organism (host) so their 'survival' in the environment can be (in some cases) indefinite.

Earlier pandemics had more to do with public health issues than pathogenesis or virulence of the responsible organism.

Autoimmune imbalance is not a normal event; H class virus is no more likely to initiate this phenomena than any other. Healthy immune systems can fight off any pathogen effectively if supported with the proper micro nutrients or pharmacy (in worst cases).

The scaremongering for our Imperial Obamament is bad enough.... we don't need uniformed option contaminating the discussion of FACT.

"What's passing for informed discussion here is plain silly; viruses are inert until they infect a living organism (host) so their 'survival' in the environment can be (in some cases) indefinite."

Entirely untrue... The viruses DNA (or RNA as the case may be) has a finite shelf life. Without being reproduced by hosts it will decay.
The longest lasting viruses like smallpox can last for over a decade, but most can't last anywhere near that long.

385 landivar  Mon, Apr 27, 2009 10:17:52am

Sorry about the triple posting but the amount of incorrectness in chemicalcorpse's post is annoying me.

"Autoimmune imbalance is not a normal event; H class virus is no more likely to initiate this phenomena than any other. Healthy immune systems can fight off any pathogen effectively if supported with the proper micro nutrients or pharmacy (in worst cases)."
Again, completely wrong!

The influenza epidemic in the early 1900's was a case of the influenza virus killing off people with healthy immune systems while leaving the old mostly untouched. The same thing seems to be happening with this flu. This is caused by the immune reaction known as a "cytokine storm."

This isn't the only virus to cause damage through autoimmune problems, Hep D (yes D) causes autoimmune attacks on the patient's corneas.

Flu pandemics happen when the virus mutates enough that our immune systems can't recognize it as similar to other flu viruses. This can happen from it crossing the species barrier (it mutates a while in another species then crosses over to humans again with a lot of differences from other influenzas).

They certainly mutate, but I thought that was their only mechanism for evolving.

Maybe "breeding" isn't the right word, but viruses certainly do reproduce: Viral evolution:

Viral evolution is a subfield of evolutionary biology that is specifically concerned with the evolution of viruses. Many viruses, in particular RNA viruses, have short generation times and relatively high mutation rates (on the order of one point mutation or more per genome per round of replication for RNA viruses). This elevated mutation rate, when combined with natural selection, allows viruses to quickly adapt to changes in their host environment.
