Snow Leopard Installed

Technology • Views: 2,755

Took the plunge and installed the latest version of Mac OS X, Snow Leopard, and it went off without a hitch. I had to upgrade three utilities to the latest versions: Snapz Pro X, Default Folder X, and Little Snitch. Apart from that, everything seems to be working beautifully.

Yes, I definitely do notice a speed improvement in many functions. And my startup drive is reporting more than 20G of freed-up space after the installation, which is pretty amazing.

The optimization of Snow Leopard is actually audible. My Mac Pro desktop machine has a fan that changes its speed based on how hard the processor is working; when you launch an application that drives the CPU harder, the fan speeds up and gets louder. But with Snow Leopard installed, it is very noticeably quieter, which means the hamsters in there are working much less.

The whole upgrade process took about an hour, with another 15 minutes to upgrade the Apple Mail database the first time I launched it. All in all, a very smooth and painless upgrade. I highly recommend it to all Intel Mac users (it requires an Intel CPU).

Here’s a helpful Wiki page if you want to check to see if a particular application will work: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Compatibility List.

Charles, I upgrade on Friday and have been less-than-impressed. I upgraded my 24" iMac (2.8 GHz, 4 GB SDRAM) and did a HD-wipe install on my MacBook and both machines actually feel slower as compared to 10.5. My personal opinion is that this upgrade is not worthwhile. That said, the low cost of the upgrade does redeem it somewhat.

One thing I'm very upset about is the apparent downgrade to QuickTime. I previously used QuickTime 7 Pro to take frame-grabs of videos my company produced. No longer does that appear to be an option within QuickTime export.

A once incredibly powerful app has been nerfed with this update. Lame.

I might wait until they come out with an upgrade. For some reason, I find Parallels 4 fast the first time it is run, but if I suspend or shut down the VM and don't exit Parallels, it starts out slow, although it eventually speeds up.

I haven't been too happy with Parallels running Vista.

The emulation layer bogs the graphics down for Vista, and it's a GPU hog.
Network connections are difficult to manage, Vista seems to have wireless issues anyway.
Other connectivity, USB etc... is flaky.

Ah ha! Thanks.

Re that kind of behavoir, I switched from Norton to ESET Anti-Virus several weeks ago. While I'm happy as a clam with ESET, it drove me crazy at first. I've got a zillion self-written macros in my Word templates (absolutely safe). Every time I opened up a Word doc, ESET arbitrarily stripped out my macros. Setting up the "ignore" list was something of a pain, and I had to call their tech support to find out how to get it done.

52 Mostly sane, most of the time.  Tue, Sep 1, 2009 2:05:01pm

Okay, random rant, (I hope you will all indulge me):

When I took my daughter in to register her for high school, I noticed that Wednesdays the schedule was different. The schedule started a half-hour early, with a fifty minute period called "Academic Seminar" first.

I thought it was probably homeroom type stuff, but maybe they might sneak something valuable in there from time to time. I had been out of the public school system for a while, so I had forgotten that...

A few years ago the teacher's union had negotiated that once a week, the kids would be sent home a half-hour early, or brought in late, and it was supposed to be teacher prep.

In other words, it's late arrival. This became clear when the bus schedule arrived.

I'm not so upset about the fact that the teacher's union would deliberately bargain to take a half-hour away from instruction (while sending home notes imploring us to have our kids there on time so as not to miss instruction time). I'm upset that they would give it such a blatantly Orwellian name.

It's not Academic. There is nothing academic about letting kids sleep in. It's not a Seminar. Nobody's meeting anywhere. I have it on good authority from a teacher's aide in the grade school that the teachers go home early. (Yes, they could be doing prep elsewhere, but that's not the point.) The name is a complete lie.*

Call it late arrival. Call it teacher's prep. Call it All-powerful-NEA time. Just be honest.

*I am currently eating bean-fruit-dairy-grain snack. In other words, chocolate chocolate muffin with strawberries and whip cream. What's in a name?

I heard that there is no direct upgrade to Win 7 from XP. I may try it out on the Vista machine first and if that works out, may think about migrating my XP systems.

I've been using smcFanControl on my MacPro. I didn't think to disable it to see if the machine cools itself better. It's good to know Apple thought about it.

I've been meaning to buy LittleSnitch for a long time. I just haven't got around to it.

I've notice Aperture seems to run faster on SL. And even Finder opens directories a lot faster. I love the new scrollable stacks--and that you can browse down a directory tree within the stack.

What programs do you use to code? Coda, Textmate, BBEdit, Dreamweaver? Do you use MAMP?

Beck never addresses Patterson's eyewitness account that Van Jones did not participate in the Rodney King riots as Beck claims. Beck also never mentions that Jones was never prosecuted after his two arrests and in fact successfully won a lawsuit against San Francisco based on the illegality of one arrest.

One thing I'm very upset about is the apparent downgrade to QuickTime. I previously used QuickTime 7 Pro to take frame-grabs of videos my company produced. No longer does that appear to be an option within QuickTime export.

Wednesday 02 November 2005

Van Jones renounced his rowdy black nationalism on the way toward becoming an influential leader of the new progressive politics.

One week later, while Jones was observing the first large rally since the lifting of the city's state of emergency, he got swept up in mass arrests. It was a turning point in his life.

Jones had planned to move to Washington, DC, and had already landed a job and an apartment there. But in jail, he said, "I met all these young radical people of color - I mean really radical, communists and anarchists. And it was, like, 'This is what I need to be a part of.'" Although he already had a plane ticket, he decided to stay in San Francisco. "I spent the next ten years of my life working with a lot of those people I met in jail, trying to be a revolutionary." In the months that followed, he let go of any lingering thoughts that he might fit in with the status quo. "I was a rowdy nationalist on April 28th, and then the verdicts came down on April 29th," he said. "By August, I was a communist."

Snow Leopard is awesome, fast, and lightweight.

It's a shame it will not work with any of my applications.

I have spent most of this day deinstalling Snow and restoring my machine's OS X 10.5.8, email accounts, applications, and passwords because most of my applications crash to desktop spontaneously.

Look at the compatibility list for your applications first. If you have doubt I would wait until the 3rd party software developers have a chance to update their applications. The latest version of Firefox crashes, too.

Even the latest Apple's Mail program would crash on me when I tried to save documents.

The last remaining piece of software preventing me from this upgrade is PGP Desktop - I'm using the whole disk encryption ("WDE") feature on my laptop and the early release of Snow Leopard took PGP by surprise. No WDE support yet but coming soon.

Given my overseas travel schedule (2 trips to germany in the next 2 months) and the fact that both US and foreign governments like to claim unrestricted copy/access/snooping rights on laptops traversing borders there is simply no way I can travel on business without encrypting the laptop drive right down to the boot volume.

I'm thinking of purchasing a couple of Macbook Air laptops for my company so that we can travel cleanly with "wiped" laptops. We'd use VPN and Apple Remote Desktop to connect securely back to the systems and data we need when it's time to do work. It would be a pain but it really is the only clean way to handle the "we are going to take all your electronics into a back room for a few hours" situation at a border checkpoint without potentially putting yourself in jeopardy for an obstruction charge if you refuse to divulge your encryption key. At least all Germany can do is refuse to let me in!

re: #205 Bagua

I've been building PCs since I as like 16 years old. Most of those years installing various incantations of Windows. Yeah, it ain't the greatest OS in the World, but if it wasn't for Windows, the Internet as we know wouldn't exist. Some people just can't handle that fact for some reason.

I love Macs too, but they're just very fancy, expensive PCs so I only have one. I also love all the "Hi I'm a Mac" commercials. They're hilarious, but not very accurate.

Comparing a MAC to a "PC" is like Apples (no pun intended) vs. Oranges. Macs are machines in which the hardware and OS are designed by the same engineering team to run together. On the other hand, PCs are an operating system (Windows) running on hardware made by literally thousands of different manufacturers. It's actually a miracle that Windows can actually run rather well on almost any type of motherboard, videocard, etc. Let's see OSX do that.

Plus there's this silly urban legend that MACs are impervious to breakdowns, viruses, etc. Total bull. The motherboard of my Macbook went dead after about three months and I had to send it in for service simply because it was a MAC. I was without it for like 3 weeks. If it was a PC, I would have had fixed that shit in 15 minutes.

Also, I've been in the enterprise hosting biz since it started. Been in hundreds of data centers and I don't ever recall seeing a MAC or OSX serving up web pages. Linux, Solaris or Windows. That's it.

If you're having that many problems, you have something else going on. I seriously doubt that Snow Leopard itself is causing them.

There are some incompatible applications, but if you're having constant crashes even with Firefox and Mail, you should look elsewhere for the cause of the problem. You may have a bad kext or preference pane, or you may have a version of the Unsanity software installed. Both of those things are known to cause big problems.

It's a city where they yap about diversity non stop, but strangely, the faces all look pretty homogenous compared to my area of the country.

Same here. I've been in datacenters and colocation facilities with Apple servers and hundreds of terabytes of Xserve RAID storage. There are Mac-centric datacenters as well. I often build scientific computing clusters and grids out of Apple OS X servers although not during recent times when they let their XServe line languish.

Apple did make a strategic decision to become a consumer products company so I do expect that their presence in the datacenter will start to shrink. Mac OS X Server is a fantastic product though.

Remember how Carville said "It's the economy stupid!"?

Well, in my world "It's in the application stupid!" I can't implement collaborative apps like MS SharePoint or SAP on a Mac environment. Using the Internet for serving up web pages is sooo 2000. Now, it's all about using the web for cloud computing and SaaS (Software as a Service). I don't see Mac in that space at all. Let Apple stick with the iPods and iPhones, etc.

P.S. I have an iPod Touch and I think it's one of the coolest gadgets in the world. Zune? What the hell is a Zune?

Remember when a petabyte of disk used to cost 1-2 million and be a big deal? That was roughly what I was looking at just last year for a couple of systems we were working on.

Today on the beowulf cluster mailing list they were talking about a low end 1PB system with a retail price of $117,000. The cost will shortly drop by a lot more once they qualify those new 2 terabyte disks in all the various 48-drive SATA systems on the market. I bet I'll be able to buy a petabyte storage array for less than $60K before year end.

I've begun wondering if (in some eyes at least) the Second Amendment itself has become more important, more sacred, than the Republic which it was written to preserve.

Confederate Wankee has long been a fool. The highlight of his 'citizen journalism' career has been pleading for funds to buy him a new gas grill after his was knocked over in a storm. This sob story was illustrated with a sad little picture of said gasgrill lying on its side.

The snarkosphere was all over this, as you might imagine.
Hilarity, as they say, ensued.

For years all storage depended on Crossbar switches to direct the LUN and path.. Who ever had the best Crossbar was selling big boxes to banks and Governments..The big boys in storage...Virtualization software is almost the speed of light..There are big changes coming on us in speed and storage...

re: #252 Charles

If you're having that many problems, you have something else going on. I seriously doubt that Snow Leopard itself is causing them.

There are some incompatible applications, but if you're having constant crashes even with Firefox and Mail, you should look elsewhere for the cause of the problem. You may have a bad kext or preference pane, or you may have a version of the Unsanity software installed. Both of those things are known to cause big problems.

Charles,

Thanks for the suggestions.

One of my primary tools is a program called Vectorworks. The company that makes it states that Snow is not compatible and a fix will be forthcoming in November. I can't wait that long. :-(

Mail crashed when I tried to save a DXF file to disk. Most of my crashes were due to either saving or importing files into applications. Grab also crashed. However, I had a few spontaneous crashes as well.

The only thing that changed on my machine was installing Snow and I did update all my other software, but the fact stands; Apple caught many developers off guard by releasing Snow early and there were unintended consequences for that action.

Personally, when things worked under Snow it was great, but I earn my living with my Mac and associated tools. When compatibility issues prevented me from being productive I had to cut the cord and return to 10.5.8.

I look forward to when the issues get worked out, but for me it was a no-go situation and I would simply ask that anyone thinking of upgrading be cognitive that things may not work out as intended for them. Why else would their be a compatibility list?

Thanks again for the help and if it works for you (and others) I am sure you will enjoy the upgrades it brings.

311 mulgamutt  Wed, Sep 2, 2009 4:32:36pm

I installed Snow Leopard on Friday. There were no problems with installation.

However... big problems with QuarkXPress and Helvetica. The new Snow Leopard installs Apple's versions of Helvetica and Helvetica Neue, which conflicts with the other versions already installed. In Quark (which I only use because one of my customers use it), Helvetica Condensed and HC Bold displayed all funky, as though tracking was set at 200, text no longer fit the text boxes. I've yet to find a solution other than changing that text to another font/weight altogether (Condensed Light).

These font issues don't happen in any other application, that I know of (eg InDesign).

It doesn't like the CS1 versions of Illustrator and Photoshop too much. If I had money, I'd upgrade. There are times it takes too long to "think" something through, and the machine shuts down/restarts completely.

Based on my experience, I give this a 4 out of 10 right now.
