S.C. Candidate hosts 'machine gun social,' 'AK 47 giveaway'
Gun politics are alive and well, at least in South Carolina.A candidate for Adjutant General there -- an elected office overseeing the state's National Guard -- is hosting some unconventional fundraising events.
Machinegun Social, September 26, 2009 from 1:00PM-5:00PM at Allen Arms Indoor Range, 1210 Poinsett, Greenville.AK-47 giveaway. Fill out your free entry form from Wednesday September 9, 2009 through September 25, 2009 at Allen Arms. The law forbids us from holding a raffle but we won't get mad if you buy a ticket to the machinegun social to help defray the costs.
And if you contribute, you'll be made an honorary member of Allen's Militia.

Congress and inhabitants of a bat cave have a lot in common. Neither can stand the light of day, both are blind to the issues, spend most of their day time hanging around, are most active at night, inspire fear in their community, and are maligned on a regular basis as vicious bloodsuckers. The difference is that the real bats perform a useful function when they go out at night, and their bloodsucking reputation is largely undeserved.

So naturally I have a true bat story. When I was a kid our family used to vacation in the Adirondacks. One evening a bat somehow got caught in the screened in porch. Us for kids screamed like well kids. My father, always the naturalist decided this was a good lesson. So he grabs a broom and ushers us all quivering out into the dark porch all the while explaining bat echo location to us. So Dad summarizes; "see I could wave this broom stick at the bat even in the dark and it will see it and easily get out of the way." He thus demonstrates by taking a lazy swing with the broom handle at the bat which is fluttering about in the dark and connects and knocks it dead to the ground!

The problem is that I really over exerted myself walking all over the cobblestones on Ben Yehuda street, and now I'm wearing the cast again. Tomorrow I will have to buy myself a crutch, or put a note in the Kotel.
Just off of Ben Yehuda was a kosher restaurant called the Yemeinite Step. Is that still there?

Sounds to me like he did everything right - issued a warning, then defended himself against attack.
Not sure what the laws are there, but around here that's more than good enough to justify use of deadly force. In some areas (Florida?) the bar is set even lower - the presence of an intruder in your home comes with an automatic assumption of imminent harm.
Even in areas extremely tolerant of such actions, the kid needs a lawyer and will probably wind up at least $50k or so in the hole after defending himself.

OT - the arrogance of this administration knows no bounds.
Steven Chiu - Americans are like teenage kids when it comes to energy.
When it comes to greenhouse-gas emissions, Energy Secretary Steven Chu sees Americans as unruly teenagers and the Administration as the parent that will have to teach them a few lessons. [snip] Still, Secretary Chu said he didn’t think that the public would throw the same political temper tantrum over climate legislation has has happened with the healthcare debate.
Since when has any administration thought of themselves as our parent? Creepy. And temper tantrums? The dems are the ones who called dissent patriotic not long ago. So patronizing.
Here comes the spinmasters:
An update: Energy Department spokesman Dan Leistikow added: “Secretary Chu was not comparing the public to teenagers. He was saying that we need to educate teenagers about ways to save energy. He also recognized the need to educate the broader public about how important clean energy industries are to our competitive position in the global economy. He believes public officials do have an obligation to make their case to the American people on major legislation, and that’s what he’s doing.”

Are you referring to Mojib Latif's statement?
Yes I am.
Here is the full abstract of the letter referred to in the article.
[Link: www.nature.com...]
The climate of the North Atlantic region exhibits fluctuations on decadal timescales that have large societal consequences. Prominent examples include hurricane activity in the Atlantic1, and surface-temperature and rainfall variations over North America2, Europe3 and northern Africa4. Although these multidecadal variations are potentially predictable if the current state of the ocean is known5, 6, 7, the lack of subsurface ocean observations8 that constrain this state has been a limiting factor for realizing the full skill potential of such predictions9. Here we apply a simple approach—that uses only sea surface temperature (SST) observations—to partly overcome this difficulty and perform retrospective decadal predictions with a climate model. Skill is improved significantly relative to predictions made with incomplete knowledge of the ocean state10, particularly in the North Atlantic and tropical Pacific oceans. Thus these results point towards the possibility of routine decadal climate predictions. Using this method, and by considering both internal natural climate variations and projected future anthropogenic forcing, we make the following forecast: over the next decade, the current Atlantic meridional overturning circulation will weaken to its long-term mean; moreover, North Atlantic SST and European and North American surface temperatures will cool slightly, whereas tropical Pacific SST will remain almost unchanged. Our results suggest that global surface temperature may not increase over the next decade, as natural climate variations in the North Atlantic and tropical Pacific temporarily offset the projected anthropogenic warming.
That is hardly an about face now is it?

Scientists pull an about face on global warming
Imagine if Pope Benedict gave a speech saying the Catholic Church has had it wrong all these centuries; there is no reason priests shouldn't marry. That might generate the odd headline, no?
Or if Don Cherry claimed suddenly to like European hockey players who wear visors and float around the ice, never bodychecking opponents.
Or Jack Layton insisted that unions are ruining the economy by distorting wages and protecting unproductive workers.
Or Stephen Harper began arguing that it makes good economic sense for Ottawa to own a car company. (Oh, wait, that one happened.) But at least, the Tories-buy-GM aberration made all the papers and newscasts.
When a leading proponent for one point of view suddenly starts batting for the other side, it's usually newsworthy.
So why was a speech last week by Prof. Mojib Latif of Germany's Leibniz Institute not given more prominence?
Latif is one of the leading climate modellers in the world. He is the recipient of several international climate-study prizes and a lead author for the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). He has contributed significantly to the IPCC's last two five-year reports that have stated unequivocally that man-made greenhouse emissions are causing the planet to warm dangerously.
Yet last week in Geneva, at the UN's World Climate Conference--an annual gathering of the so-called "scientific consensus" on man-made climate change --Latif conceded the Earth has not warmed for nearly a decade and that we are likely entering "one or even two decades during which temperatures cool."
And for the record, he never did an about face, it is not scientists, but rather scientist, and he certainly never conceded the Earth has not warmed for nearly a decade. This is a series of utter lies. The article is pure bullshit.

The government's role in such cases ought to be to make the best possible information easily available for everyone, so people can judge for themselves based on objective facts. I have no problem with the government being a clearinghouse for nutritional information.

Well since it is posted right upstairs on this very site...

The government's role in such cases ought to be to make the best possible information easily available for everyone, so people can judge for themselves based on objective facts. I have no problem with the government being a clearinghouse for nutritional information.

Well, they're going to send us to bed without soda pop or candy... at least they're going to tax the hell out of it, since we can't be trusted to nourish ourselves properly.
FWIW, I thoroughly agree that the nutritional IQ of most Americans is appalling, but it is not the government's business to remove choices, even bad ones, from adults.

A well-behaved bat of a small variety could probably be fit into a jacket, would not set off metal detectors, and if you weren't patted down, could probably be brought in and released. However, if the lights were on, it would probably just go under someone's desk and go to sleep.

Robert Spencer was on a local talk radio show this morning and actually admitted to wanting to deport Muslims and stop Muslim immigration. His reasoning, there is no way to separate the peaceful Muslims from the radical ones.
No joke. This was on the Mike Rosen show this morning, 2nd hour, 10:00-11:00am mountain time, on KOA. Podcast may be on the website.

No; he's just acknowledging that science has an imperfect understanding of these topics and that reality doesn't match the models that are currently being used as a result. Acceptance via peer review makes the same acknowledgement by a wider circle of scientists in the field.

Some good news from the UN, believe it or not.
The Israel-hating candidate for head of UNESCO was defeated by a Bulgarian diplomat.
Here's more on the loser:
Egyptian Culture Minister Hosni, 71, was long considered a favorite, but his candidacy has drawn criticism from Western intellectuals and Jewish groups due to comments he made in May 2008, in which he promised to burn any Israeli books found in Egyptian libraries. The opposition to Hosni was led by Elie Wiesel, Bernard-Henri Levy and others, who blasted the candidacy of a "book-burner" and noted his 22 years as a minister in an authoritarian regime responsible, among other things, for censorship in his country. They also complained of his 2001 characterization of Israeli culture as "racist" and "inhumane."

I am very tired of the meme of bashing on modeling. We successfully model all sorts of systems all the time.
Imperfect does not mean insufficiently accurate to make make strong enough predictions to demand actions.
Apparently, the models currently being used aren't entirely successful if this paper is correct. And to miss a large-scale fluctuation of the duration and magnitude in question seems like a pretty large inaccuracy.
I'm certain that models improve with time. If you take all the data from, say, ten or twenty years ago and plug it into the best climate model available today, it seems that you don't arrive at a different overall global temperature than what is reflected in reality, by a significant margin.
And according to your original post, the departure from reality seems to be due to processes which are unknown or not fully understood at this time.
And finally, I'm not denying anything. I'm just pointing out facts in order to see what makes you bluster. It seems that the most innocuous of statements will get you there, even when I've carefully avoided making any sort of pronouncement on where I stand regarding this issue. You just leap to the conclusion that anyone questioning anything you say, no matter how small or trivial, is some sort of knuckle-dragging oaf who needs to be attacked and vilified.
Way to win friends and influence people. And you wonder why promoting GW is such an uphill battle? Maybe it's because so many of the people doing the promotion are such flaming assholes when it comes to dealing with other people in general, let alone those who disagree with them.
I guarantee that you will not win a single person over to your side who believes otherwise using such tactics. I'd go farther and suggest that you probably wind up driving many fence-sitters away by coming across as an arrogant know-it-all jerk.

Democrats on path to repeat housing disaster
With all the attention paid to the health care battle, ACORN, and the president's "Full Ginsburg" appearances on five Sunday talk shows, few people noticed a hearing with an exceedingly boring title -- "Proposals to Enhance the Community Reinvestment Act" -- held last week in the House Financial Services Committee. But the session marked a key moment in the ongoing battle between Republicans and Democrats over what caused our current financial woes -- and how we might best avoid getting into the same trouble again. At the hearing, and in others across Capitol Hill, Democratic majorities are pressing hard to expand some of the very policies that led to the reckless home lending that in turn helped lead to the great financial meltdown. If Chairman Barney Frank and his fellow Democrats have their way, we'll do it all again -- and more.
At issue last week was H.R. 1479, the Community Reinvestment Modernization Act of 2009, sponsored by Democratic Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson. It would expand and strengthen the 1977 Community Reinvestment Act, which required banks to make loans in low-income areas that many lenders had traditionally shunned.

New details in Hopkins samurai sword case
Police now say the confrontation occurred outside the student's garage, not inside, as first reported by authorities. And they say the student didn't react to a noise and find an intruder but in fact had been alerted by police that a suspicious man had been spotted in the neighborhood. He and officers from the city and Hopkins investigated but found nothing.
A few hours later, police now say the student grabbed the sword and went outside with friends and later found the suspect in a driveway. Police say the student was backed up to the exterior of a garage door when they said the suspect lunged and the student made a single swipe with the sword.
Still sounds like self defense to me, being backed up and lunged at.

The problem with fuel cells is that hydrogen from water is uneconomical; it takes a lot of energy to produce the hydrogen; far more than you'll get back.
Most hydrogen available today comes from natural gas, and that process takes energy, so the entire cycle isn't that efficient.
The car doesn't produce CO2, but producing hydrogen from natural gas does.
And hydrogen made with solar power is expensive; the economical source would be nuclear power. (Admittedly, the 2003 National Academy of Engineering study is a bit out of date, but I'm unaware of any breakthroughs that change its conclusions)

Funny- that's the same argument the mullah's have been using for the last 30 years.
The thing is, something like 2/3rds of Iran's current population was born after the Shah was overthrown, so they don't have any firsthand experience of how shitty life was under the Shah- just firsthand experience on how shitty life currently is under Achmedinejahd and the mullah's kleptocracy.

I just want to know the origin of the fuel cell lines///

But there are two problems some conservative pundits have with the rise of Beck, and the ongoing transformation of Fox News into a Beckian network. One is that he’s expressing a sort of old-fashioned ’50s Reds-under-the-Beds conservatism, which is by its nature isolationist. What worried Wehner, who is a “neoconservative” very much in favour of foreign intervention, is that this kind of isolationism will take root and become popular; Beck has already attracted many of the people who were Ron Paul followers last year, and many of these people hold views on foreign policy that are closer to the “left” than the right. Now, when a Republican is in office again, Fox News will switch back. (Again, this is familiar if you followed the Clinton era, when the Kosovo intervention was decried as scary imperialism by many conservative pundits and politicians who supported the Iraq invasion a few years later.) But right now they’re validating a viewpoint that many conservative pundits find dangerous and don’t want to see mainstreamed: the conservatism that is anti-intervention across the board, at home and abroad. Fox News will stop promulgating these views when they’re not convenient, but right now, for the sake of ratings, they’re helping to bring the Paulites into the mainstream of conservatism, and so-called neoconservatives hate the Paulites even more than they hate liberals.
Interesting.

"Everyone can do little things like use less electricity, litter less and so forth, "
Not that I'm pro-littering or anything, but what does it have to do with global warming?
Much electricity in America comes from coal plants. Use less juice, burn less coal. As to litter it has two big effects..
1. much of the stuff ends up in to oceans and water ways. This kkills ocean flora. That means less CO2 scrubbing.
2. Lots of litter and land fills do all sorts of toxic things to soils and it kills off terrestrial plants and hence less scrubbing.

Great question. I can only hope that making people very aware of the dangers of doing nothing on the one end, coupled with the benefits of creating jobs and building up our own domestic economy can sway them.

Senate passes successor bill
The state Senate passed a bill this afternoon that would allow Governor Deval Patrick to name an interim successor to Edward M. Kennedy, potentially paving the way for appointment of a new US senator later this week. The Senate approved the measure by a 24-to-16 vote, leaving one final procedural hurdle in both chambers before the bill heads to Patrick's desk. The House and Senate are expected to enact the bill on Wednesday, a formality unlikely to derail the effort.
Patrick has pushed for the bill and could sign it as early as Wednesday. Administration officials have been considering several possible appointees, but have declined to release the names out of concern that such a step could affect the legislative debate.
Among the names frequently mentioned by observers are Michael S. Dukakis, the former governor; Paul G. Kirk Jr., the former Democratic National Committee chairman and an aide to Kennedy; Charles J. Ogletree, Harvard Law School professor; and Evelyn Murphy, former lieutenant governor.

Scene from one of my favorite books. Hero unloads a .45 into a demonic hell beast to no effect. "OK, now that you got that out of your sys-OUCH! KNOCK THAT SHIT OFF!" as the hero throws the gun and hits him in the eye.
Which, in turn, reminds me of a great MST3K voiced-over line from Earth vs. The Spider, as a group of soldiers rush by an officer to once again direct utterly ineffective rifle fire at the giant arachnid; [Barney Fife-ish voice] "We're trying the gun thing again, Sir!".

It is kind of comical how they go back and forth on this with such obvious partisan fervor. I read some old quotes of why they needed the legislation changed a few years ago. God, motherhood and apple pie... Now that things are flipped it's a different flavor produced by the same folks that gave you the old one.

re: #338 Kragar (Proud to be Kafir)
Well, this is going to go well
President Mahmoud Abbas said on Tuesday that Israel must honour agreements on borders and Jerusalem which he says its government made in 2008 talks with the Palestinians if stalled peace negotiations are to resume.
Speaking after talks with U.S. President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Abbas also repeated Palestinian insistence that Israel halt settlement building in the occupied territories, including East Jerusalem.
...
"We are certainly not obligated to the positions of the previous government," Netanyahu said in New York.
Allow me to translate that.
Bibi is sending a message to Obama. He's telling him that since Obama did not keep the commitment that George Bush made to Israel, then Israel is certainly under no compulsion to keep a commitment...especially one that was rejected by the Palestinians outright.
More importantly, Obama had to backtrack on this issue:
Palestinians have strengthened their efforts on security, but they need to do more to stop incitement and to move forward with negotiations. Israelis have facilitated greater freedom of movement for the Palestinians and have discussed important steps to restrain settlement activity, but they need to translate these discussions into real action on this and other issues. And it remains important for the Arab states to take concrete steps to promote peace. [Emphasis mine]
No settlement freeze, in other words.
Obama lost. It was stupid of him to side with the Palestinians when they offered nothing. It was stupid of him to think Saudi Arabia would do anything. It was stupid of him to think he could force Israel into a total settlement freeze.
Bibi 2, Obama 0.

Scarborough on Beck: 'You Cannot Preach Hatred
On MSNBC's "Morning Joe" today, Joe Scarborough, as a NYTimes blog put it, "castigated some commentators and Republicans, vowing to create a 'conservative honor roll' calling out those who express over-the-top hate-filled sentiments." Chief among "those" appears to be Fox News host Glenn Beck.
Scarborough went on a lengthy tangent, saying: "You cannot say that the president of the United States hates all white people. You cannot call the President of the United States a racist. You cannot wallow in conspiracy theories as he did for about a month...You can't stir up that type of hatred -- calling the president a racist -- and then say, 'Oh, I'm just a rodeo clown.'"
It's interesting that suddenly other talking heads are speaking against Beck. What's changed?

Ohhh sorry I did miss it... If you mean full scale hydrogen power, no I do not really see that working except in special circumstances. In a place like iceland that has a tone of readily available geothermal power and a small population it may be practical.
However, splitting water takes a huge amount of power. You would have to have very large energy intensive hydrogen plants to do it. For our grid and population the numbers don't work out IMHO.
To power those plants, you would need to switch to something like nuclear anyway. At that point, why not just have an electric vehicle?
The torque on them is monstrous, you get awesome performance and you aren't carrying around a large tank of explosive gas.
In that special I linked to is a pure electric roadster that looks like a car from Star Wars, goes 0-60 in 4 secs and has a range of 250 miles. It is available today, but expensive @90K. As batteries get better and cheaper and the new batteries from ANL are developed, (these new batteries exist and have triple the energy density as ones in current production) such cars will only get cheaper and perform even better.

Interesting, this book was peer-reviewed, and recommended for publication...
"Dr. Chris Harrison (Publishing Director of social science publishing for Cambridge University Press), anticipating the level of controversy a book like this would likely provoke, took extra care with the book's peer-review process. For example, instead of choosing candidates from the usual list of social science referees, Cambridge University Press chose from a list provided by their environmental science publishing program. Four were chosen: a climate scientist, an expert in biodiversity and sustainable development, a specialist on the economics of climate change (whose credentials include reviewing publications for the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)) and a "pure" economist. All four members of Cambridge's initial review panel agreed that the book should be published."

If you take the amount of influence they're exerting with the GOP right now, it isn't apples and oranges. Both have done a fair amount of damage, both continually embarrass themselves, yet they maintain a lot of influence within the party. Right now, for example, Gov. Rick Perry is channeling the Beck, and people within the party reliably apologize to/for Limbaugh. Perhaps Beck will burn out faster, but hes done an incredible amount of harm in the time his star has burned brightly.

Ok, I relly do have to go, but we filmed the scene by having the "victim" laid on the ground and the camera on the floor about 5 feet from his head so tht you were looking "down" at his body, i.e. saw his shoulders and the top of his "head".
The head was a plastic and latex construct on a stick so it could "waggle" by an operator out of the shot, and was filled with liver and cow brains from the butcher shop.
That way it could look like he was struggling and he could waggle his arms and legs - and then go spastic as the sander came down on his "face"
It was a delightful mess and surprisingly convincing.
My buddy, who was the victim sold it just right with the twitches and then getting very stiff.
Three people from the film class had to leave :)

Actually they address that in depth in the special. Engines are much better and more efficient, but rather than using them to build more economical cars, we build monster engines that we put in big heavy cars and actually end up loosing overall in total efficiency.

While he may not have been a conspirator he certainly had knowledge of and relations with J W Booth. As to whether he would go along with the initial kidnap plot is unknown and as to the murder of the president almost certainly not. Interesting that he was pardoned by President Johnson a mere 3 years after the assassination and returned to MD.

Right; a film which glorifies a cocaine dealer and his efforts to make one last "big score."
Lovely.
Trivia (courtesy IMDB):
The Eldorado Cadillac driven by Priest was owned by KC, the pimp who makes an appearance in the nightclub scene. The deal was that KC would get a part in the movie (in the opening credit it says "and introducing: KC") in exchange for the use of his car.
Financing for the film came from two dentists and Gordon Parks father of the film's director Gordon Parks Jr..
The script was only 45 pages long, which explains why there are so many shots of people walking, driving, etc.
Star Ron O'Neal didn't like the cocaine montage. In an E! True Hollywood Story interview, he said it so glorified drug use, the montage was akin to a "commercial for cocaine."

I look at every film for script, plot, performance--and for its subtext. Every film is a product of its own time, and every film says something about its time and about the progression of thoughts and attitudes, whether it intends to or not.
You can, for instance, trace the disillusionment of Americans with scientists and the government through monster and sci-fi movies, from the essentially benign view of scientists, and belief in the government's ability to deal with threats, in films like "The Day the Earth Stood Still," "The Thing," "Them," and the original "Invasion of the Body Snatchers," to a belief that scientists are fools and government for the most part ineffectual when it is not actively malevolent in more recent movies.
It's very interesting, and sometimes rather disheartening.

I like what Lomborg has to say a lot. I haven't read his book, but I've seen some lectures he's given (I think one is here.)
His basic argument is that AGW will cost trillions of dollars per % of CO2 to fix, so the money is better off spent on adapting to climate change, with the excess being spent on more immediate problems (like poverty and health problems). Humans should transition to cleaner energy sources over the next century.
Humans at this point of their technological progress cannot control their climate within a small window relative to the giant swings we've seen in the billions of years this planet has existed.

Sorry for the late answer. I was watching the Hannah Montana movie with my niece - her present for being a brave girl when they took out her appendix last week.
In Maryland we have something call the "duty to retreat". If someone breaks into your house, and they're armed, and you're armed, you still don't automatically get to shoot them. If you can resolve the situation by running away and leaving the field to the bad guy, you can, under certain circumstances, be held responsible for not doing so.
Sound crazy? It is. And it's reason no. 1,933,842 that I'm moving away.
