Pretty much everything to say about if the Peace Prize is something other than a political statement by the European Left, or has any particular meaning other than a political statement has been said. Pretty much everything worth saying about needing to have earned an award before getting one, has been said - even by the president himself, who actually acted with great grace and humility in his response.

However...

The endless cries of affirmative action, no doubt to be followed up with an insult to the first lady, that we see from the wingnuts is nothing more or less than outright race baiting.

I have the following rejoinder to the typical person who believes this sort of evil bile:

For all your conservative talk about personal responsibilities and the need for a person to take care of himself, you seem to have a very hard time looking in the mirror. The reason that people like the Obamas go to ivy league schools and then go on to make something of themselves is that they are much smarter, more dedicated and more talented than you.

I wish to point out that this is not a racist comment at all. There are very many very smart and accomplished people who share the same pale complexion as you and me. Despising racist white trash types is not racist, as racist white trash people do not constitute a race. Rather, they are a subset of white people that come from the lowest orders of intellectual, educational and moral rungs. Unfortunately this is a point lost on ignorant folks like you.

It is only human nature - very base human nature - to feel jealous and angry when one is out competed by those you had determined were less than you. There's nothing wrong with pointing out skin color, but if you suggest that Obama's skin color is the reason he won the award, then you are playing the race card.

Of course, Erickson was joking and doesn't really think that. But then my uncle was just joking when he made that comment about Obama and watermelons last fall. It's racism that allows you think that those kind of comments are funny, even when no malice is intended.

It is affirmative action, but of a different kind.

The Nobel Committee are long standing socialists who promote a socialist agenda and Barack Obama best exemplifies that agenda. Bank and financial institution bailouts, car company bailouts, TARP and managed health care reform that more and more looks like a Euro project are what he was rewarded for.

That is not to say that none of these endeavors was not necessary- some surely were. Rather, it is in how these projects were undertaken. Mr Obama is more comfortable with European style reforms and agendas and the Nobel Committee could relate to that.

It's just come to my attention that Soldiers' Angels is desperately in need of help. They have over 4,000 care packages for US soldiers overseas, and due to the recession they don't have the funds that they need to send them out. These packages have to go out soon, due to the extended delivery time.

Some of you might recall that this is the organization that does Soldiers' Angels and Project Valour IT. My Marine has been a direct beneficiary of this outstanding volunteer organization, and I'm trying to give them a hand by getting the word out.

I agree with the sentiment, but the drop is on the order of 5 percentage points - roughly equivalent, in fact, to the drop between peak and trough shown for the Democrats, although the graph itself isn't easy to read and doesn't seem to have complete "hover" information.

More significant is the downward trend for both parties beginning mid-year, accompanied by a sharp upward trend for independents over the same period. As always, it's the middle that needs to be watched, and independents are more representative of the middle than those who strongly identify with one particular party or the other.

It's the same thing that happened to the Dems following years of irrational Bush-bashing in 2002 and 2004 - the nuts drove moderates away from the party and left them with little choice but to stay home or vote for the GOP, costing Democrats two elections which they ought to have won easily. It wasn't until Howard Dean shoved the crazies back into the closet and out of the spotlight that the middle started drifting towards the Dems again.

And you're correct that there is a real danger of exactly the same thing happening to the GOP if the crazy isn't reigned in soon. But the graph shown isn't all that convincing.

tradewind is correct that several elections next month are favoring Republicans, and in many cases this represents a significant reversal from polling done over the last several months. These are scattered special elections and local (gubernatorial and state level) contests; not all seats strictly follow the ordinary two- and six-year cycles, and states of course are free to depart from that synchronicity as they please.

Which brings up another problem with your graph: off-year, midterm and primary elections are often dominated by extremes, the ones who are fiercely motivated to get out and vote. A national polling difference of likely voters often misses this trend and mis-calls projections because they fail to account for more moderate voters finding other things to do that day.

Such nuances are beyond the banned, though. They think that getting the Banhammer thrown at them means that any and every little difference of opinion, no matter what it may be, is frowned upon here. This despite whatever the real reason for their banning may be. Arafat was given the NPP as a vision of what might possibly come (given his recent steps). Arafat failed miserably and we all facepalm at the idea of him ever being considered for this prize, now.

President Obama's NPP was given in the same vein. I, for one, hope he lives up to the expectations.

I'm not sure how to solve the Afghanistan issues, and partnering with the Taliban seems incredibly distasteful to me but the course of using the Taliban as a partner in the Afghanistan process is interesting for the possibilities (and also for the failure possibilities).

Fair enough. But my feeling is that the mushy middle seems to vote with their wallet. If (and that's a big if) the economy turns around by Fall, 2010, then the middle could just as easily swing back.

One of my clients had an issue with bandwidth recently. When I logged into their system I found that the two main culprits were people using youtube and a handful of boneheads looking at kos and mashing the refresh button to see if anybody responded to their posts.

When I brought it up to the owner he had me block youtube and kos, resulting in one of his employees quitting (over kos being blocked). She even threatened to get a lawyer over the matter, touting that he was discriminating against her political ideology.

That too. I mean, evolution is science. It needs to taught in schools. It is dealing with this world directly, and we have evidence to prove that it happens. Saying that God started it, however, deals with spiritual matters, which we will never be able to investigate. Don't teach something you cannot back up.

It just won't happen. The Republican Party has the best chance of changing, but the only possible change (i can see) is a libertarian push (I mean tea-party libertarians) or a Sarah Palin/Michelle Bauchmann party (Christian Insanity).

The libertarian party has no leaders. No one even close to a leader in the house or senate (Ron Paul is not a leader -- he's never passed a single bill and has only had three bills ever get out of committee).

First thing is first:
get leaders in local government.
work on local policies
move leaders to house and senate

That's a ten year process.

A shorter rebirth for the Republicans is the Christian Insanity course, which will gain some support then implode quickly leaving a larger hole.

I find this all sad. I'd love to see a true conservative party balance the Democratic party.

My reasoning went like this: they gave it to Arafat, and he failed to make peace in the Middle East. I agree, but I have friends that believe in the literal translation of the Bible, and I'm cool with that faith even while not agreeing. It's those that believe their faith gives them a right to screw with my life that I have a problem with.
i.e. if we have Lizards that are creationists, but don't push it into the public arena, I may discuss the issue with them as long as we both respect each other right to practice our faith or lack thereof.
I don't particularly like either side mocking the other, since in matters of faith we have no way of knowing WTF is really going on in the long run.

Obama winning hasn't only riled up the rightnutwingocraty or whatever, but has confused the hell out a lot of us Europeans. Its not like there aren't candidates out there who would really deserve the prize - like Vaclav Havel. Reliably left leaning Helsingin Sanomat poll has a 50-50 result on whether the prize was deserved, while Swedish Dagens Nyheter has a 67% majority saying no. Martti Ahtisaari commented that he hopes the prize encourages Obama in his efforts to win peace between Israel and Palestinians, but that those efforts have so far not succeeded.

Ugh - I saw that one. What's really, colossally stupid about it that the resemblance between the Matisse work and the painting now in the White House by a different artist was noted over ten years ago in, of all things, a catalog of one of the artist's own exhibitions, where the resemblance and derivation is openly acknowledged as deliberate. Modern art is full of copied and enhanced riffs like this, in much the same way that a great deal of jazz borrows phrasings and even whole compositions from other jazz artists.

Needless to say, this argument got nothing but puzzled grunts and hostile stares from the shit-flinging monkeys over there; I left when they started reaching for their backsides.

In short: Plagiarism - not. Presidential culpability, even if it were - not, even with prolific stretching.

Meanwhile, the health care bill faces it's last hurdle in the Senate, passage through the Finance Committee, yet not a word uttered about it.

Someone linked the outline of their schedule earlier, I think in the thread downstairs. It's on the Nobel Committee's website, I'm certain. The timeline contains several months for deliberation before a final vote is held in October.

She eventually left him and is married to someone who is now a Maryland state trooper and wants to get into their helicopter EMT department. Much different use of dedicated work. I'll admit, the online game can be fun and engaging at times, but at other times, it feels almost like a second job. A nephew of mine was staying over once and he was listening to that rap garbage on one of my computers - one song in particular was rife with that word. When I told him to turn it off, he argued that it was okay because a black person was saying it.

I tried to teach him that it was not okay and to pick and choose when it is offensive to you is also unacceptable. It fell on deaf ears though.

I think encouraging is perhaps a bit strong. I'd say they're not doing enough to keep them out of leadership, and some are cynically exploiting these slack-jawed fools' bigotry to attempt to gain short-term political ends. Well, it is just like alcohol - some people can handle it and work, and have a life (like me) and some are alcoholics. I know I'm at risk of being an online game addict, so I stay away. I'll play offline games, because I know I'm not missing anything when I'm not playing - nothing is gong on in the game unless I have it running, so I can leave it if I don't have time.

We have a whole batch of folks at my company who play this thing. It's all they talk about at breaks and lunch. I frequently loiter nearby, because I find it endlessly amusing to hear engineers in their late 30's with families talking about what happened last night during the gaming session as if it happend to them in real life.

That's a mighty broad brush you're painting with. There may be some truth to what you say among some people in the south, but not all. Do you actually know any "southern whites"? Is it not possible in your mind for a southern white like, oh, say, myself, to be opposed to portions of Obama's stated agenda and not opposed to Obama in general because of race? Is it so hard for you to believe that people like myself exist?

You don't need to find it. I made no claim that it was a "tiny minority". I simply said there are some of us who do NOT fit the mold. I'm familiar with the poll you are looking for, and had a discussion with Iceweasel and Keith Gabreylski and someone else one day about that poll. It appeared to me the southern sample used was disproportionately high. No matter; it is true that there are many in the south who are racist.

The polling trends disagree with your premise. We'll see after the midterms, but in state and local races, there appears to be a lot of buyers' remorse affecting independents who pulled the D handle.

To be frank, I think you need to get out more. Far and away, the most racially polarized area in the country that I can think of is the metro Detroit area. Although this isn't overt racism, exactly, but de facto segregation, with a huge concentration of blacks within Detroit's city limits and an equally disparate concentration of whites in the surrounding suburbs. It is unlike any modern urban region I have visited in the country in this regard, and it will be decades before it changes significantly.

Moving into more rural areas of the state, we enter serious KKK country; the organization used to be centered here through the 70s and early 80s, until Tim McVeigh and company's frequent passages through the area drew too much attention from the FBI, and the Grand Pudyanks, or whatever the leaders are called, got a whole lot quieter or left for more private areas, mostly in the western region of the country.

Ohio is another real garden spot when it comes to rural good ol' boys with a fondness for Confederate flags plastered onto their pickups. It's the only place I've ever been accosted over my beard, despite being in late middle age, and was actually concerned enough to keep tabs on where my cell phone was until things ramped down to a more comfortable though still uneasy level.

And a friend who attended Alfred University could tell you some sickening stories about the yocals in that neck of the woods.

I've traveled all over the south and southwest, too, and I've never run across the overt racism you're referring to in anything like the degree you're attributing to the region.

I'm thinking you're seeing and hearing what you desire to see and hear. You'd be advised to apply a more objective cast to your observations and make sure you're not doing more than a little stereotyping yourself.

Martin Luther King had a relatively easy time of it (only dogs and water-hoses!!) in the South, since his appeal to Christianity and right v. wrong resonated with what people thought they believed.

He ran into real trouble in the North, and never had very much success with his message there. The Northern "Christians" were way more concerned with their property values and keeping African-Americans out of their supposedly integrated schools to give him much slack. There were no Bull Connors, but the effect he had was far less, and the South today is far more integrated than a lot of the North.

I have to disagree with you here - I grew up in rural Michigan and there was no presence of the KKK anywhere that I lived. Also, your McVeigh reference is bogus because he was very quickly kicked out of the militia group there because of his radical views. I'm not claiming there was no racism there, but it was definitely not KKK country.
