The ironic thing about CSS Zen Garden is how un-Zen-like most of the submissions truly are.
BTW, I prefer their plain-jane standard CSS layout. It seems not only more Zen-ish to me, but it is one of the few that is actually easy to read.
Which brings me to one of my hang-ups about what we refer to as the "World Wide Web" - the utter sameness of it all. The problem stems from the fact that most people use the same screen all the time, so window is fit into the same size.
That, and the proclivity for web site designs to be so dominated by the rectangle.

Trying to drum up some interest in this story....
It's mostly a linkfest, everything I could pull together regarding a story about an autistic 5th grader who's being badly mistreated by his Fort Smith school.
Cat in A Dog's World does the best job of nutshelling it:
A Sad Story, and a Call to Action
If you listen to anything autism- or disability- related today, listen to this interview with Carole Reynolds, whose 11-year old autistic grandson Zakhquerey Price is facing felony charges for allegedly injuring two staff members at Beard Elementary (Fort Smith, AK) while said staff members were trying to restrain him.
Zakh's story is really heartbreaking, and demonstrates so many problems with public education, the system of mental institutionalization, and criminal justice system.
Zakh has already faced years of forced institutionalization, including during a period in which he and his family mourn the loss of his sister. Now, he faces criminal charges without adequate legal representation. His family cannot afford a private lawyer, and the public defender assigned to his case does not know much about autism. With the current situation, there is a strong chance that Zakh will be institutionalized against the will of his familyagain. Zakh has already faced years of institutionalization due to a school system which wants to not educate him. He has also been institutionalized during a period in which he and his family are mourning for his younger sister, who died during his period of incarceration in mental institutions.
What can we do to help?
You can donate to Zakh's family so that they might obtain adequate legal representation.

Advocates say a $290,000 (euro203,180.83) speeding ticket slapped on a millionaire Ferrari driver in Switzerland was a fair and well-deserved example of the trend.
Germany, France, Austria and the Nordic countries also issue punishments based on a person's wealth. In Germany the maximum fine can be as much as $16 million compared to only $1 million in Switzerland. Only Finland regularly hands out similarly hefty fine to speeding drivers, with the current record believed to be a euro170,000 (then about $190,000) ticket in 2004.

An Iranian parliamentary committee investigating cases of torture and rape at the government's Kahrizak detention center in the weeks following a disputed June 12 presidential election has taken the unusual step of condemning government officials for what took place.
The committee report blames former Tehran prosecutor and government stalwart Saeed Mortazavi for ordering opposition protesters to be sent to the over-crowded Kahrizak facility.
The report says three detainees died as a result of violence and mediocre conditions at the prison, but it denies anyone was raped.
Several former detainees, one of whom later fled to Europe, recounted incidents of torture, brutality and rape in the weeks after they were released.
Iranian film-maker Reza Allamehzadeh, who lives in exile in Holland, interviewed detainee Ibrahim Sharify who explained how he was raped and tortured at Kahrizak. He said that Ibrahim Sharify, who says in the interview he was raped, is living proof rape and torture exist in the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Journalist Babrak Daad also detailed various incidents of torture and rape of young detainees at Kahrizak to the VOA's Persian Service. He said a number of young people were raped at the Kahrizak detention center, detailing their brutal treatment at the hands of their jailors.

Paris-based press-watchdog Reporters Without Borders blasted Iran as the "biggest prison in the world for journalists." Following recent arrests, dozens of Iranian journalists are now being detained without trial, in addition to others already serving stiff sentences.
Monday, 36 hardline members of Iran's parliament aligned with President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad and sponsored a bill to have all imprisoned opposition activists who oppose the government declared "enemies of God."
"Enemies of God," or mohareb, are to be executed within five days of their arrest, with a maximum five-day period to appeal the sentence, instead of the usual 25.

Spend a lot or spend nothing at all, it didn't matter, the AP analysis showed: Local unemployment rates rose and fell regardless of how much stimulus money Washington poured out for transportation, raising questions about Obama's argument that more road money would address an "urgent need to accelerate job growth."
Obama wants a second stimulus bill from Congress that relies in part on more road and bridge spending, projects the president said are "at the heart of our effort to accelerate job growth."
Construction spending would be a key part of the Jobs for Main Street Act, a $75 billion second stimulus to revive the nation's lethargic unemployment rate and improve the dismal job market for construction workers. The House approved the bill 217-212 last month after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., worked the floor for an hour; the Senate is expected to consider it later in January.
AP's analysis, which was reviewed by independent economists at five universities, showed that strategy hasn't affected unemployment rates so far. And there's concern it won't work the second time. For its analysis, the AP examined the effects of road and bridge spending in communities on local unemployment; it did not try to measure results of the broader aid that also was in the first stimulus like tax cuts, unemployment benefits or money for states.

The picture emerging from the review ordered by Defense Secretary Robert Gates is one of supervisors who failed to heed their own warnings about an officer ill-suited to be an Army psychiatrist, according to information examined by investigators conducting the study.
Hasan, 39, is accused of murdering 13 people on Nov. 5 at Fort Hood, the worst killing spree on a U.S. military base.
What remains unclear is why Hasan would be advanced in spite of all the worries over his competence. That is likely to be the subject of a more detailed accounting by the department. Recent statistics show the Army rarely blocks junior officers from promotion, especially in the medical corps.
SNIP
In telling episodes from the latter stages of lengthy Hasan's medical education in the Washington, D.C., area, he gave a class presentation questioning whether the U.S.-led war on terror was actually a war on Islam. And students said he suggested that Shariah (shah-REE'-yuh), or Islamic law, trumped the Constitution and he attempted to justify suicide bombings, according to the information reviewed by The Associated Press.
Yet no one in Hasan's chain of command appears to have challenged his eligibility to hold a secret security clearance even though they could have because the statements raised doubt about his loyalty to the United States. Had they, Hasan's fitness to serve as an Army officer may have been called into question long before he reported to Fort Hood.
Instead, in July 2009, Hasan arrived in central Texas, his secret clearance intact, his reputation as a weak performer well known, and Army authorities believing that posting him at such a large facility would mask his shortcomings.

Update on the Pennsylvania judges who were accepting kickbacks to put Juvi's in detention centers:
[Link: blogs.wsj.com...]
But we recently got wind of an allegation tucked into a civil complaint concerning Ciavarella that’s really not for the faint of heart.According to this story, from the Wilkes-Barre Citizens Voice, Ciavarella sentenced one former juvenile defendant to six months at a detention facility based solely on the number of birds perched on the ledge outside his courtroom. The allegation was made by attorneys for the plaintiff, now 21, who filed a lawsuit last week.
The suit has accused Ciavarella, the juvenile court judge from 1999 to May 2008, of inexplicably ordering Raul Clark to look at the ledge outside the courtroom during sentencing. Clark, according to the suit, was told to tell Ciavarella the number of birds he saw, the attorneys said.
Clark, 14 at the time of the November 2002 hearing, counted six; Ciavarella sentenced him to six months of detention - one for each bird, according to the lawsuit. Clark had appeared in Ciavarella’s courtroom on two misdemeanor charges: violating a town curfew and possession of a small drug pipe.
“Ciavarella’s cavalier conduct demonstrates that what took place before him was nothing more than theater for (his) amusement,” Clark’s attorneys wrote in the filing (link not available).

Gaza – Ma’an – The de facto Ministry of Health confirmed on Sunday that 15,000 swine flu vaccines arrived in Gaza, which were provided by Saudi Arabia and transferred into the Strip in coordination with the World Health Organization.
Gaza Health Minister Bassem Na'im thanked and praised Saudi Arabia for its efforts and noted that H1N1 vaccines are scarce.
But....
Canada loans 5 MILLION H1N1 doses to Mexico
Canadian Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq on Wednesday announced plans for the country to loan Mexico five million doses of the H1N1 (swine flu) vaccine, Agence France-Presse reports. The loan will help Mexico meet its innoculation demand, while the country waits for H1N1 vaccine orders to be fulfilled by several manufacturers. "Mexico is expected to replenish the borrowed Canadian stock by the end of March, Aglukkaq said," according to the news service (1/6).
European countries have too many doses of H1N1
France has said it aims to cancel 50 million of the 94 million doses ordered from Sanofi-Aventis, Glaxo, Novartis and Baxter, while Germany wants to cancel half the 50 million doses ordered from Glaxo.

A statement issued late Sunday by the group said the women suffered from "various illnesses," but gave no further details. Iranian authorities have not commented on the reported detentions.
The women are part of a "mourning mothers" gathering held by women whose children have been killed or unaccounted for in unrest since the disputed presidential election in June.

Turkey's prime minister accused Israel on Monday of threatening peace in the region and using disproportionate force against Palestinians.
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan urged Israel to stop violating Lebanon's airspace and territorial waters. He also called on the UN Security Council to put same pressure on Israel regarding nuclear arms as it does on Iran.
"We can never remain silent in the face of Israel's attitude. ... It has disproportionate power and it is using that at will while refusing to abide by UN resolutions. We can never accept this picture," Erdogan said. "These steps threaten global peace."

Agreed. I would say what I think needs to be done, but parts of it would be advocating violence and that's a no-no. Of course, the regional repercussions would be bad . . . I know it's a delicate balancing act, but I believe that the attitudes of the UN and many of Israel's "neighbors" has put them in a no win situation.

The average temperature in December 2009 was 30.2 F. This was -3.2 F cooler than the 1901-2000 (20th century) average, the 14th coolest December in 115 years. The temperature trend for the period of record (1895 to present) is 0.1 degrees Fahrenheit per decade.
2.88 inches of precipitation fell in December. This was 0.65 inches more than the 1901-2000 average, the 11th wettest such month on record. The precipitation trend for the period of record (1895 to present) is 0.02 inches per decade.

An update to the personal issue some of you helped me with yesterday. I had a nice chat with my sis-in-law about her fear of the dark and managed to make my points without her running away crying. Having all the lights on, the t.v. on, sleeping with a 70lb dobermann and still being afraid is unreasonable. I offered to get her some counseling to deal with her fear issues and she took me up on the offer. Turns out she's just now coming to terms with her mortality. I guess she's just figuring out people die.

The problem I have with that article is that it makes a number of strawman claims. I don't think, for example, that any serious climatologist is saying that global warming is solely due to man-caused factors. That being said, I'd be interested to see what the other side has to say about some of the supposed facts presented in the article, like the increasing summer sea ice. It seems like some contradictory evidence is being presented on both sides of the argument.

If I'm not mistaken, summer sea ice is just that: too thin to make it through the winter. It apparently breaks up rather than adding to the existing ice caps.

From the article
Among the most prominent of the scientists is Professor Mojib Latif, a leading member of the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC),
Prof Latif, who leads a research team at the renowned Leibniz Institute at Germany’s Kiel University, has developed new methods for measuring ocean temperatures 3,000ft beneath the surface, where the cooling and warming cycles start. He and his colleagues predicted the new cooling trend in a paper published in 2008 and warned of it again at an IPCC conference in Geneva last September

I'd have to do a much deeper amount of research before I can make a fully reasonable response. My initial three opinions are:
1. An article like this pops up every initial winter cold snap ever since AGW got going in the media.
2. I'd need to know more about Prof. Latif, the depth of his research, and how his theories and data are viewed by the meteorological community. Is he part of a small contrarian group who thinks the current models have inaccuracies, or is he at this point essentially viewed as a "crank" with some serious flaws in the model and data he proposes?
3. It also seems that the article goes with Latif's claim that his model covers 50% of the warm/cold trends. How does said model account for increased atmospheric CO2, and run-on effects from that in the future? (I.E. could Latif actually think that CO2 is a threat, but that the incorrect IPCC model is giving up less time that we actually have before climate changes screw-over human civilization.
I note that the few comments I saw with that article were typical foaming at the mouth denier remarks.

Salt is also what makes food taste good, helps bread rise, acts as a preservative and is critical to brining poultry and koshering meat. It would also put bagels and lox on the chopping block since it's needed in curing fish.

I despise this. But, if the ultimate goal is to tax me to pay for everyone's health care, then I think I'd support crap like this. If we are to become an entitlement nation, I at least want assurances of accountability from the people that I'll be subsidizing.
If we're going to pay for people's health care, then the government will have to "regulate" health to ensure tax payer money is used most efficiently.

From the wikipedia page on Prof Latif. (Yes, it's a snip.)
"In 2008 Latif was joint author of a modelling study in Nature whose results suggested global surface temperature may not increase over the next decade, as natural climate variations in the North Atlantic and tropical Pacific temporarily offset the projected anthropogenic warming."
I note that term "temporarily" used. That implies to me that Latif thinks that the CO2 issue is real, but that the immediate effects might not be as dire as projected. In that case, the article to a degree is a sort of quote mine since it's not going to help us deal with the CO2 issue and will just be another arrow in the denier quiver.

Isn't this part of the whole "nutritionism" cycle where the science and food industries run from "bad nutrient" to "bad nutrient" (salt, trans-fats, etc. etc.) as the different studies come in.
I didn't really come across all that until I read Pollan's _In Defense of Food_ and in the end it didn't affect my eating that much since to a large degree I was already ignoring most of the marketing spiels and trying to eat a balanced veggie heavy diet as it was. Well, the billions spent on road construction in the stimulus package haven't created any jobs. They were never going to create jobs in any appreciable number to offset the millions of jobs lost elsewhere in the economy. Unemployment rates were unaffected by the increased spending on road construction work. So, while the road work was necessary to improve infrastructure, it didn't fulfill the Administration's goals of reducing unemployment.
Meanwhile, the NYT is pushing Colorado as some kind of example for health care claiming that they crave health care reform. Of particular note is the claim that 1/6 of Colorado residents don't have insurance, despite the state being a model for all kind of health care programs to cut costs.
Curious. Very curious. The national average for those lacking health insurance is 15%. Indeed, Gallup polls routinely find anywhere from 10-15% of respondents self identifying as not having insurance. That means that Colorado is below the national average (1/6 is 16.6%). Why is Colorado below the national average?

Pollan's pet phase in the most recent book was "only eat food that your grandmother would recognize as food". I thought that was an interesting way to get one to dodge a lot of heavily processed foodstuffs. Which are generally the items that I see with tons of excess salt or corn syrup.
I made a batch of "pecan sandies" based on a cookbook recipe. Got about 50 small cookies, and since I knew the ingredients that went in I had a decent idea what the calorie count, sugar, salt, etc. was. Looked at a package of the Keebler equivalents when in the grocery store the next day. I think I'll stick to my own, or use a local bakery from now on.

Excellent point, and those folks are going to take a big hit in the form of the IRS penalties if they opt not to take the insurance or higher costs if they decide to pay for the insurance to avoid the penalties. Those are higher costs to those individuals no matter what happens.

I take uninsured figures with a grain of salt after living with my ex-roomate. He is 25, has $90,000 of debt, bought a $28,000 car brand new with nothing down, just went on a cruise, rents a 1700 sq foot townhouse, went into grad school using nothing but loans, and eats out daily.
And yet he is one of the many clamoring for government health insurance.
I told him that if he didn't have $320 monthly car payments, that alone would let him buy isurance easilly. He didn't like that.

When a nation's debt exceeds 60 percent of its GDP, its growth rate slows precipitously, the study found. When that ratio exceeds 90 percent, nations' economies barely grow, and can even contract.
The U.S. national debt is at roughly 84 percent of the country's GDP, and it's projected to cross the authors' 90-percent threshold late this year or early next year.

Good article. The Dems need an improved economy to re-elect Pres. Obama and keep the majority. They do not want to wreck the economy they just want to fix it "their way". Big gov, big entitlement spending. But more influenced by corporate interests than ever.
Like as in the past the recovery will be despite rather than because of DC. DC can ease the pain, but not really fix the problem. Like the flu.

They have a reading library at San Francisco's Japantown. They let you in for a certain amount of money for a half hour, and you can sit there and read all the manga. Very handy for kids who can't afford to collect the stuff!
Of course, on any given day at Borders, you'll find the same kids seated in the aisles in the manga section, doing the same thing, but it's not as profitable to the store.

Not "destroy", but I do beleive he is like many on the left in that they would like a fundamental change away from free market unregulated to highly regulated federal mandates for several reasons
They beleive it's needed to level the playing field, and to ensure that execs are reigned in, and the ever popular elimination of merit increases (for employees) and rather everyone that does job "X" gets the same compensation, regardless of productivity

A large part of the administration’s $786 billion dollar stimulus bill was devoted to green or renewable energy projects, but the rate of unemployment continues to rise, the cost of gasoline and heating oil continues to rise in the face of the coldest winter on record in decades, and real jobs in energy industries are thwarted by Obama administration restrictions on the exploration and development of our national energy reserves.

He pleaded guilty to attempting to influence a public servant after the Oct. 15 saga that captivated a national television audience. He must serve 30 days in jail before he can participate in a work-release program.
Despite pleading guilty, he has professed his innocence, saying last week that he truly believed his son was inside the balloon and entered the plea only to appease authorities and save his wife from being deported to Japan.

I'm so glad to see you. I wanted to let you know about my pledge to add a meatless day to my week to cut down on my carbon footprint. I decided to make it Fridays, so that when Lent came around, I was already in the habit of eating meatless.
As it turns out, Vatican II doesn't remove the requirement for meatless Fridays, it just made it so that it wasn't a sin, but the Church still asks Catholics to stay meat free on Fridays. So- I wanted you to know that the Catholic Church is very progressive in this matter, and I hope that any other Catholics reading will likewise considering going meatless every Friday for Jesus and Mother Earth. :)
Peace be with you all.

re: #305 Fat Bastard Vegetarian
I'm trying to get Zedushka to not eat so much meat. His favorite vegetarian food is falafel.

Speaking of practical jokes gone wrong. When the FBI shows up you know you may have crossed the line from harmless fun to terrorism suspect.
Federal agents investigating 'Unfaithful' Tiger Woods Gatorade bottlesDENVER - Federal food safety inspectors are investigating the bootleg Gatorade bottles turning up in local stores.
On Saturday night, 9NEWS reported shoppers were finding bottles with photos of Tiger Woods and his wife and the word "unfaithful."
9NEWS sent a crew to a Denver Safeway and found additional mislabeled bottles on the shelves.
A temporary worker for Gatorade says the company sent sales reps and temps into stores Saturday to remove those bottles.
Gatorade told us it has contacted local authorities.
9Wants To Know Investigator Kyle Clark has learned the Food and Drug Administration's Office of Criminal Investigations is looking at the situation as a possible tampering or adulteration case.

I'm talking about national elections. You can get these problems in states all the time. I'll use my home state as an example. The Machine Dems have all the money and clout. The state GOP, has no money or clout. While the Dems tend to run corrupt politicians, the state GOP always runs crappy candidates. A good conservative candidate wouldn't run for state-wide office because they know they will lose without any party support. This happens because one party has a strangle-hold on the power.
This is not true nationally.

[Link: www.denverpost.com...]
People forgo pants on Denver light-rail Sunday for No Pants! Subway RideAs Denver resident Bevelee Simpson boarded a northbound light- rail car Sunday, he noticed a young woman in what he thought was a bathing suit.
Then he saw another.
Then it got strange.
Spread throughout the car were men reading newspapers, women listening to their iPods, a family of adults chatting about Denver — all in their underwear.
Nobody seemed to know one another or even acknowledge they were half-naked.
More than 30 people — including a cadre of high school girls, a Polish performance artist, collegians and software programmers — on Sunday braved stares, giggles and 40-degree temperatures to ride the rails en masse in their skivvies as part of a massive, nationwide prank.
"It was kind of cute. Better them than me. I would've got arrested," Simpson said. He said he doesn't mind the public pranks "so long as it's not really blown out of proportion and as long as it's not dangerous to everybody."
The No Pants! Subway Ride was started in 2002 by the New York City-based Improv Everywhere and has since inspired copycats in cities nationwide, including Denver.

You know American workers are in bad shape when a low-paying, no-benefits job is considered a sweet deal. Their situation isn't likely to improve soon; some economists predict it will be years, not months, before employees regain any semblance of bargaining power. That's because this recession's unusual ferocity has accelerated trends — including offshoring, automation, the decline of labor unions' influence, new management techniques, and regulatory changes — that already had been eroding workers' economic standing

Game Change also slams Palin as mentally unstable and an ignoramus who thought Saddam was ultimately behind 9/11.
"One minute, Palin would be her perky self; the next she would fall into a strange blue funk," the authors write. The morning of her ill-fated CBS interview with Katie Couric, Palin - "her eyes glassy and dead" - was unresponsive to attempts to prep her as she was being made up.
"As they were about to set off to meet Couric, Palin announced 'I hate this makeup' - smearing it off her face, messing up her hair, complaining she looked fat," the book relates.
Palin went on to give answers to Couric that were so incoherent the interview permanently damaged her.
The idea that she was suffering from post partum depression was also raised by staffers/handlers.

The book also apparently gets Scott Schmidt to admit that without Palin, the McCain campaign would have lost by an even greater margin.
Palin's spokeswoman, Meg Stapleton, has disputed the version of events presented in the reporters' book."The governor's descriptions of these events are found in her book, 'Going Rogue.' Her descriptions are accurate," Stapleton said in a statement to "60 Minutes." Stapleton added: "She was there. These reporters were not."
Schmidt conceded that had Palin not been on the ticket, "our margin of defeat would've been greater than it would've been otherwise."
That bit at the end comes as the last paragraph in the WaPo story - burying the lede as it were.
It looks like this book skewers pretty much everyone in both parties. Might make for a good read on that basis alone.

Throwing the Book at Speech Codes
One reason people assume political correctness is dead is that campus speech codes—perhaps the most reviled symbol of P.C.—were soundly defeated in every single legal challenge brought against them from 1989 to 1995. At two universities in Michigan, at the University of Wisconsin and the University of Connecticut, at Stanford, speech codes crumbled in court. And of the 13 legal challenges launched since 2003 against codes that FIRE has deemed unconstitutional, each and every one has been successful. Given the vast differences across judges and jurisdictions, a 13-0 winning streak is, to say the least, an accomplishment.Yet FIRE has determined that 71 percent of the 375 top colleges still have policies that severely restrict speech. And the problem isn’t limited to campuses that are constitutionally bound to respect free expression. The overwhelming majority of universities, public and private, promise incoming students and professors academic freedom and free speech. When such schools turn around and attempt to limit those students’ and instructors’ speech, they reveal themselves as hypocrites, susceptible not only to rightful public ridicule but also to lawsuits based on their violations of contractual promises.

The bitter winter afflicting much of the Northern Hemisphere is only the start of a global trend towards cooler weather that is likely to last for 20 or 30 years, say some of the world’s most eminent climate scientists.
Their predictions – based on an analysis of natural cycles in water temperatures in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans – challenge some of the global warming orthodoxy’s most deeply cherished beliefs, such as the claim that the North Pole will be free of ice in
summer by 2013.According to the US National Snow and Ice Data Centre in Colorado, Arctic summer sea ice has increased by 409,000 square miles, or 26 per cent, since 2007 – and even the most committed global warming activists do not dispute this.

Are there people around who still think the Dems health care bill will hold down costs and improve service?
[Link: www.washingtonexaminer.com...]
With Democrat Martha Coakley in trouble in the Massachusetts special election to fill Ted Kennedy's seat, Democrats could lose vote No. 60 for President Obama's health-care bill. In response, an army of lobbyists for drug companies, health insurance companies, and hospitals has teamed up to throw a high-dollar Capitol Hill fundraiser for Coakley next Tuesday night. The invitation is at right (click here for a better view).Of the 22 names on the host committee--meaning they raised $10,000 or more for Coakley--17 are federally registered lobbyists, 15 of whom have health-care clients. Of the other five hosts, one is married to a lobbyist, one was a lobbyist in Pennsylvania, another is a lawyer at a lobbying firm, and another is a corporate CEO. Oh, and of course, there's also the political action commitee for Boston Scientific Corporation.
All the leading drug companies have lobbyists on Coakley's host committee: Pfizer, Merck, Amgen, Sanofi-Aventis, Eli Lilly, Novartis, Astra-Zeneca, and more. On the insurance side of things, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Cigna, Humana, HealthSouth, and United Health all are represented on the host committee.
This bill is an excuse to line the pockets of the democrat constituents. Maybe all the money pouring in is the reason they don't give a crap what the voters think.

In the game or two leading up to the Dallas game the Saints were struggling. They even lost to the lowly Bucs at home the week after. I don't know how the Eagles scored all those points. They started the season without two of their projected starting linemen, and lost their center on week 16. The team's greatest RB ever was in uniform, but is probably done. So that offensive arsenal consisted of a decent QB, a very good receiver, a decent rookie WR and a near pro bowl TE. Anyway, nothing lasts forever. Andy Reid had never gone 1 and done in the playoffs, Dallas hadn't won a playoff game in 13 years so those things are bound to end.

Jeter is my homie...Kalamazoo...he used to wear a Yankee jersey to grade school and brag how he was gonna play for them someday...he did that for years

One person's dirtbag is another person's role model. The time has long since passed when athletes should be idolized for anything other than their performance on the field.

Well, he's only the best player in baseball.
Let's not get carried away. He's a HOFer in waiting; no 'roid connections we know of; class act; putting up HOF numbers and may play long enough to go after Rose's hit record. Having 5 rings doesn't hurt either.
But, he's not the best player in the game. ARod and Pujols are both superior hitters - particularly in power department. He might not even be the most dominant HOFer in waiting on his own team - that would go to Mariano Rivera.

I always rooted for the cowboys until they started picking up dirtbag players over the last decade.
I rooted for the Cowboys as a kid. My mom's orthopedic surgeon was the team doctor for the Cowboys back in the Staubach/Dorsett years, and he got us tickets on occasion. Hell, we even went to the Super Bowl one year when it was Dallas vs. Pittsburgh. Mom used it as an excuse to take me to Disney World at the same time. It was awesome. XD
I stopped rooting for them when Jerry Jones came around, particularly in the way he handled Tom Landry's firing. I understood why the firing happened, but the way it was done has always left a bitter taste in my mouth. The man was a damned legend and he was treated like someone who'd been busted stealing office supplies. I've never forgiven Jones for that. =P

Often, the corpse is stored in an above-ground crypt until the weather permits excavation. It just isn't worth trying to dig through soil that's frozen solid to a depth of several feet, and even if you did, you wouldn't be able to fill the hole back in without somehow pulverizing the frozen blocks you pried out.

True. It would. But you would have to then explain what it is about Radical Islam, what they advocate, etc. And THAT, of course, will make any thinking being go "wait, haven't I heard this before? What about THESE guys? They are right next door!"

After much contemplation, weasel, I decided to give this comment a ding down, because it is not your place to tell me or anyone else what is or is not "fitting" for their profile quotes since this isn't your blog.
I'd also ask you to stop posting comments to me with your false concern and/or respect for me, since you have neither for me, and we both know this, or at least I have known this since learning you asked my friends to let me starve when I needed help.
I think it's a bad idea to have a Catholic saint as your avatar while also quoting a murderous, genocidal fuck who specialised in persecuting Irish Catholics, like me.
And Scots, like Jimmah.
I don't blame you for being embarrassed about it. Decent people would be. And you're not even a Catholic.
And as for your total distortion of events there, let's say this: I think it's a bad idea for a 'fiscal conservative' to expect to be given -- not lent -- money on a demand basis every six weeks, while refusing or being disinterested in all offers of practical help: resume writing, getting back into school, legal clinics, food pantries, and more.
But then, I also think it's a bad idea to hate someone who wanted to help you, and merely objected to the idea of giving you money all the time. Or to carry on a vendetta against them for it.
Bring on your downdings, St Sharmuta of Duh. But maybe you should be spending a little more time planning your resume or your school plans, so that you aren't in need of such 'help' (i.e. gifts of money) every few weeks, and a little less time 'seriously considering' when and where to downding me.

Sharmuta, as you know I am one of those you asked iceweasel to approach for money for you.
Both iceweasel and I were genuinely concerned about your well-being, but as a rule I do not give money to people I only 'know' from the internet, especially when it seems to me that it's not ultimately serving any purpose except allowing someone to put off making some urgent decisions and changes in their life. Iceweasel felt the same way.
To characterize iceweasel's thoughts and feelings on this as wanting to let you starve is a disgraceful lie. You should be deeply ashamed of yourself for this and the way you have behaved towards iceweasel since that time.

re: #533 Jimmah
I can't say I'm sorry she brought the real issue up. From the beginning of her vendetta against me she has been seeking ways to smear my character and pretend that this is all somehow about LGF. It is not. She has called me a liar multiple times, a narcissist, and a sociopath, and I took it all. She has been frantically emailing and IMing others, to enlist them in her campaign of hate.
It has been, and always has been, purely personally motivated, entirely by events occurring off the blog. It's been going on for months.
I would never have divulged that information about her and did not, in all this time, no matter how nasty she has been to me. Even when people here asked me what it was about. Even when her spite and malice and envy led her to sneak back to an old thread to downding our wedding video-- which was the moment when I lost all remaining sympathy for her.
Now it's out, and in future should she try to malign me again, I will be linking these posts, so people can see exactly what this is all about. What it has always been about.
And now I intend to engage in no further discussion on the matter -- or with her, ever again.

Forgiveness is the name of love practiced among people who love poorly. The hard truth is that all of us love poorly. We need to forgive and be forgiven every day, every hour -- unceasingly. That is the great work of love among the fellowship of the weak that is the human family.

Of the Seven Deadly Sins, anger is possibly the most fun. To lick your wounds, to smack your lips over grievances long past, to roll over your tongue the prospect of bitter confrontations still to come, to savor to the last toothsome morsel both the pain you are given and the pain you are giving back -- in many ways it is a feast fit for a king. The chief drawback is that what you are wolfing down is yourself. The skeleton at the feast is you.

She has, and has always had, my email. Yet she continues to choose to use LGF for her own petty and personal vendettas, and for weird forms of emotional gratification, rather than behaving like an adult.
