This is just me nit picking but if the graboid can detect solid rock, than how come the graboids don't detect solid walls of concrete or even cliff walls? Could it be that the graboids, while in chase of a prey, can easily become too distracted by their target that they not notice the dangerous obstacles?

I'd say yes. Their blood lust is like a teen aged football player's blind lust for cheerleaders regardless of the cheerleader's state of arousal.

Thumbs up Governor:
[Link: www.sacbee.com...]
In an extraordinary court filing, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger asked Friday that gay marriages be allowed to resume immediately in California after a federal ruling that the state's voter-approved ban on gay marriage is unconstitutional. The Republican governor filed his brief with U.S. District Court Judge Vaughn R. Walker before a Friday deadline to submit arguments on whether to continue a stay of Walker's decision against Proposition 8.
"The Administration believes the public interest is best served by permitting the Court's judgment to go into effect, thereby restoring the right of same-sex couples to marry in California," wrote Kenneth C. Mennemeier, an attorney representing Schwarzenegger, in the brief. "Doing so is consistent with California's long history of treating all people and their relationships with equal dignity and respect."

I once worked out the math for the energy required for graboid locomotion through thick, rocky soil. It appears that they would require so much energy that their radiated heat would melt the rock.
They would, essentially, swim through lava of their own making.

I take a great deal of pleasure in making fun of people, friend or foe. It's my hobby. I've managed to refrain here because it's hard to do sarcasm in text and people don't know if I'm serious or not. For any of those with the opinion that the U.S. and/or NATO should up a pull out of Afghanistan - this morning comes a reminder of the type of pain and suffering that will result of our departure:
6 Americans on medical team killed in Afghanistan
[Link: news.yahoo.com...]
""This tragedy negatively impacts our ability to continue serving the Afghan people as IAM has been doing since 1966," the charity said in a statement. "We hope it will not stop our work that benefits over a quarter of a million Afghans each year."
The team, made up of doctors, nurses and logistics personnel, was attacked as it was returning to Kabul after the two-week mission in Nuristan, Frans said. They had decided to travel through Badakhshan province to return to the capital because they thought it would be the safest route, Frans said."
This is not an issue to be soft about. It's tough for not just the Military folks we have in harm's way and their families, but for all westerners trying to improve the lives of those caught in this conflict.
We must not abandon those who depend on the western world - which includes the U.N. - to help and enable the people of Afghanistan build a nation that will embrace those ideals and freedoms that all free people strive for and deserve.
And I say this with a son in ROTC who upon getting his Butter Bars next spring might well be posted there.

Yesterday I had a conversation with some concerning taking MediaMatters seriously when they do the same thing as Breitbart. I wish I had seen this yesterday:
Media Matters Gives Glenn Beck’s Co-Hosts The Shirley Sherrod Edited Audio Treatment
[Link: www.mediaite.com...]
Let’s end the week with some Shirley Sherrod-ing – editing a clip to make it sound like a person is saying something that is actually the complete opposite of what they’re saying. In this case, the offender is Media Matters, which tries to prove that Glenn Beck’s radio co-hosts were saying Keith Olbermann was responsible for the deadly Manchester workplace shooting.
To their credit they owned up to their "mistake" after they were called on it. Of course, there is no way they didn't know they were lying when they originally posted the story. There was also another Breitbart problem:
Andrew Breitbart’s Video ‘Evidence’ Of Lying Congressmen Is Anything But
[Link: www.mediaite.com...]
As long as people continue to give them any credibility and traffic this phony "gotcha" crap will continue. Stop believing one side is better than the other just because you agree politically.

No, I know why you call me cheerleader. It's because you think there actually are 'teams'.
There aren't teams. Obama is not my guy. Obama is not doing much good at all about renewable energy, which is my main concern, health care, while a tiny first step, is still screwed, and the country is still full of unadressed, systemic problems. The finance reform won't do jack because it's not algorithmically evolutionary, and the markets are.
Yet somehow to you, because I say that the right-wing is currently crazier-- which it is-- you transform that into me being a cheerleader-- and you don't even notice the irony of that.
Media matters has distorted crap before and will distort stuff in the future. However, it is really easy to compare them to Breitbart and use common sense to see that Brietbart is far more extreme than they are, and far more damaging to the national discourse.
Except, for you, somehow the magical balance fairy means that the 'sides' are always equal.
Like I said, kinda cute.

Mosque leaders also tried to discourage parents from speaking out when young Somalis began disappearing in 2007 - warning that if they talked to the FBI, their children will be incarcerated at a detention facility like Guantanamo Bay. Bihi singled out the local CAIR chapter for criticism, after the group discouraged families from cooperating with law enforcement.
"We were the first [Muslim community in the United States] to stand up to them," Bihi said regarding CAIR's objections to Somalis talking to the FBI without a lawyer. He was referring to this 2009 protest by Somali families outside a July 4 CAIR event.

It is cool, but I haven't had time to do too much with it. Right now I have it turn GPS on when I put the X in the Car Dock and I have it go to vibrate when I place my phone face down at work. It is a really powerful program, I just haven't done much with it. Lifehacker.com keeps featuring new things you can do, but I haven't implemented any yet.

The defense cuts may not cause much harm because it is money previously approved but unspent that is simply being rescinded, including $683.5 million unspent from last year’s economic stimulus package and $325 million that was supposed to pay for construction projects.
However, diverting money from the defense budget to education programs would eliminate any opportunity for the Defense Department or Congress to take unobligated money from one defense program to spend on another defense program.

Media Matters initially received "more than $2 million in donations from wealthy liberals" with ties to the Democratic party (including Peter Lewis of Progressive Insurance, Steve Bing, Marcy Carsey, Susie Tompkins Buell, Leo Hindrey, Gail Furman, and James Hormel) and "was developed with help from the newly formed Center for American Progress".[15][16][17] It also has received significant funding from Democracy Alliance (funded in large measure by George Soros), MoveOn.org, and the New Democrat Network.[17][18] Media Matters hired numerous political professionals who had worked for Democratic politicians and for other progressive groups.[19] [20] Former chief of staff to president Bill Clinton John Podesta provided office space for Media Matters early in its formation at the Center for American Progress, a Democratic think tank that he had created in 2002.[21] Hillary Clinton advised Media Matters in its early stages out of a belief that progressives should follow conservatives in forming think tanks and advocacy groups to support their political goals.[22] [23] A May 2004 article on Media Matters in the conservative National Review referred to MMfA staffers who had recently worked on the presidential campaigns of John Edwards and Wesley Clark, for Congressman Barney Frank, and for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.[24]. In July 2006, Media Matters for America opened a state chapter, Colorado Media Matters [1]. Media Matters recruited Colorado natives to run Colorado Media Matters and to analyze the local state media using the original Media Matters' research techniques. The chapter closed its doors in March 2009.[25]

Our budget for the men and women in uniform is the most bloated military budget on the planet. The article you copy/pasted from even says that most of the money comes from funds that the military never spent (i.e. They've got so much money allocated to them they can't spend it all).

On second thought, I guess in the micro-universe of the internet that Media Matters and Fox are on fairly equal footing. It's a good thing most Americans don't live on the internet (myself and present company excluded)...otherwise, this could be bad news for Murdoch.

Okay...my bad. I just didn't have the full context. Media matters is a blog, you know...like this place, or Huffpo, or dkos, or Redstate...it never hurts to cross-check a story for validity. Sadly, we have to do that with a lot of our network news these days as well.

I take it all back and I apologize. You can trust a partisan site that cuts up clips and posts them as "damaging news blurbs!" while simultaneously not trusting sites that do exactly the same thing with opposing partisanship. Not really
Rogue made a point (that as of yet hasn't been disputed)
Instead of acknowledging he was correct and leaving it at that, it was expanded to include comments that WERE made (goal post moved). Rogue never stated that Rush didn't make racist comments, only that Media Matters DID attribute other comments to him

No, I'm saying they put words in his mouth that never uttered by him. I'm saying last week someone posted another MM story about rush that turned out to be completely misleading. I am disputing that. "Worst" is, of course, subjective. A few of the most blatantly racist quotes do not have supporting audio/video. This is correct, but these quotes were found several places...so attributing them to MM may not be accurate. In any case, I personally find that some of the verified quotes are just as racist as some of the disputable ones, so yes...I dispute his point.

Maybe the problem I'm having communicating this is because of Rush but I'm not talking about their take on him specifically. They do it to everybody, it's in their nature. Either you're on the other side of an issue or you aren't keeping with the correct dogma so therefore you're a target. We see it all the time on both sides of the aisle and yet somehow people get it in their head that they because they happen to agree with a political stance then it's ok to trust one of those sites as a source.
I don't go to newsbusters (I even had to look it up because I couldn't remember their name), I don't go to Media Matters, I don't go to Hot Air, and I don't go to DKos. We already know what slant they're going to take on an issue or a media personality. What the hell is the point?

No. I was discouraging people yesterday for taking a MediaMatters report at face value. I didn't realize that would be so controversial.
That was my post regarding Limbaugh, where he stated that talk about secession and civil war "are not the rantings of extreme kookism" (his words) that you're still taking issue with .
[Link: littlegreenfootballs.com...]
Please make a note that I link I provided includes the audio segment so you can judge for yourself whether the statement is accurate.
After you said not to trust the MM clip because "that partisan sites just might put edited clips out there that take things out of context", I replied to your accusation here:
[Link: littlegreenfootballs.com...]
with this statement:
The clip is an unedited, self-contained segment. It begins with a call taken by Limbaugh, followed by his response in monologue form (no interaction with caller outside of opening part of segment). The only way this could have been edited is if sections were taken out mid-segment, and the flow of the clip indicates there are no gaps.
There was no Brietbart-style editing here - Here's the link to the transcript taken directly from Limbaugh's own site.
[Link: www.rushlimbaugh.com...]
CALLER: I'm calling because I don't know if the election is even going to solve the problems in this country. I'm very conservative, but I don't think... You know, look at what's happening in California. Let's say that most of the conservatives win reelection in midterm elections. They don't have to accept it. There will be other judges. I think it's already too far gone.RUSH: Well, okay. If we're too far gone, then what are you going to do?
CALLER: I think the states may be be looking at secession, maybe another Civil War -- and tell you the truth, I'm ready for it because I'm so hopping mad.
RUSH: You know, this is --
CALLER: I'm mad every day.
RUSH: I know. You're mad.
CALLER: I'm mad at the --
RUSH: You are mad every day. Other people are depressed every day. Look at what people in this... This is a reasonable woman and she's talking about secession, Civil War! She's not alone, folks. This is not the rantings of extreme kookism anymore. Minorities do not... You know, if we give way to the minority every time, we got minority rule -- which is what we've got, by the way, and look where it's taking us. Minority rule. So, "The midterms aren't going to matter. We need a revolution. We need secession." She's mad. A lot of other people are mad. (interruption) Well, some might say the Civil War's already on, a nonviolent one with no arms that have been taken up, but some would say a Civil War's going on. Not started by us. If you're of the opinion that the Civil War is underway, it's been started by the American left years and years and years ago and is just now intensifying.

re: #79 Obdicut
Right on Breitbart vs MM, right on renewable energy, on finance reform, etc.
Unfortunately, Obamacare is no small step. Since the law hasn't gone into force yet, we can't be sure just how bad it'll be, but it's already added to the demoralization of business and consumer confidence.

Here's the problem with unemployment benefits... we are not marketing the concept correctly... I never realized how the British term unemployment benefits...
"Kevin Gaffney had to face up to a double setback on Friday. The 53-year-old, made redundant by the airline that employed him at London’s Heathrow airport, was obliged to sign on for jobseeker’s allowance for the first time."

I should have used sarc tags for the Sharpton/Jackson stuff. My bad. But "Barack the Magic Negro"? That is offensive.
OK, simple misunderstanding on my part regarding the Shartpon/Jackson links.
I don't find the other offensive. I think the magic negro thing is something used in movies/tv and is annoying. In regards to it use with Obama, I look at it similar to his being called the messiah. Would you agree that there is nothing racist about the opinion piece other than the headline (which I find questionable)?

We had to put one down at 15 years old
The two we have now we took from a shelter. The mixed one we got about 3 years ago. At the time they stated he was 4-6 years old
The Westie we've had almost a year. They told us he was 1 1/2 -2 when we got him
Our shepherd/collie mix came from the ASPCA shelter and she's about 11 or 12. We got the goldie from a breeder about 7 years ago. The little one is only about a year old. We got him from a friend.

When they were called on it, they owned up to the inaccurate story and retracted, and apologized for the headline.
When Limbaugh, Breitbart, FoxNews get called out for the same thing?
Ignore, deflect, accuse the accuser of "bias" , and double down on the rhetoric.

I love dogs and can hardly imagine living without at least one. My wife was more of a cat person and we've had a few of them over the years. In fact, one cat lived through the first 19 years of our marriage. I follow Media Matters primarily because of David Brock's work, because in many ways his journey away from what is defined today as mainstream conservatism parallel those of our own Mr. Johnson.
For those of you who don't recognize the name, he was one of the SoCon media's favorite footsoldiers during the 1990s, until he got fed up with the sleaze factor dominating the publications, as well as militant anti-gay sentiments espoused.
He wrote a book in 2002 called "Blinded by the Right: The Conscience of an Ex-Conservative" that I think should be required reading by anyone wanting to see how the inner workings of places like the Washington Times or American Spectator shape the right-wing mindset.

Gunmen killed five Iraqi policemen in an overnight shootout that lasted until dawn at a suspected bomb workshop in western Baghdad, security officials have said.
In the Baghdad shootings, police who trailed suspects to a house in the mostly Sunni neighborhood of Saidiya came under fire from an unknown number of gunmen.
The shooting lasted for hours until dawn, when the gunmen slipped away through a rear entrance, according to two Baghdad police officers and an interior ministry official.

This is what we've come to:
Utah polygamists star in reality TV show
[Link: www.sltrib.com...]
The makers of the hit television reality show “Jon & Kate Plus 8” are producing a new series that easily could be called “Kody & Meri & Janelle & Robyn Plus 15.”
“Sister Wives,” a seven-episode series on the TLC network, is the first reality show that follows a polygamous family. The show profiles Kody Brown and his three sister wives, a group of fundamentalist Mormons in Utah (the family does not want to reveal the city it live in).
We are all officially headed to hell.

I see that none of you have spoken to many blacks about this. This is going over big time in the black community. The black people I know are telling me they think, “you go girl, keep on spending the white man’s money”. They feel that Michelle is sticking it to the man and she should just keep spending and spending since it isn’t their money, it is the government’s money and the man never paid reparations. So they think it is great that she and Obama are taking trips and vacations They are getting satisfaction living through what Obama and Michelle are doing.
Say what you want but consider the truth. This is helping Obama big time in the black community.pwb on August 7, 2010 at 12:30 PM

You bet. The event runs all day, about 20 acts, ending up with Three Dog Night... the only reason it gets out at 7:00pm is that this road out here is a windy 2 lane country road, and no street lights... it would be a bitch trying to get all the cars out to the 4 lane interstate after dark. And the entrance to Beaver Ranch (the venue) is a small dirt road.

I used to get a little irritated by the vacations presidents went on, then I looked into it and saw that they pay for it themselves, along with the food they have every day, the chef that's kept on staff, etc etc. Surprising how much comes out of the Prez's own pockets. Not a gig that usually falls in the lap of people who can't afford it, to be sure. But it's a real blow to people who want to get all worked up about the prez spending taxpayers money on his little trips. Keep trying, guys, there's plenty of other things things the potus's blow our money on.. let's keep it real.

She can do what she wants to do, but there may be plenty of people looking at her with the stink eye because she is taking the vacation abroad at a time when domestic vacation spots can use the business. people judge well known public figures more closely (and harshly) because they can relate to planning a vacation. in judging a company's motives for its business practices, most of us see that as a decision made by some corporate committee as opposed to a single family planning where to spend their money. Human nature and all that ...

Companies outsourcing abroad is usually a good thing, because it often makes American companies more efficient and competitive. Not always; see software development as a negative case. Whine about your 401K going down, whine about jobs being outsourced, can't have it both ways. Competitive Advantage is a point rarely questioned in the world of economics.
On the other hand, if Obama is vacationing, especially in another country, he's probably not signing yet another stupid Democrat bill into law, so that's also a good thing. Enjoy, Mr and Mrs Obama, you deserve the rest for all the stupid shit you take. Please, stay a little longer.

Sure. You can say that about anything.
But the reason they have a competitive advantage is due to human rights violations, and we ought to recognize that and penalize companies that export work to them.
We have enormous power to influence human rights that we barely use.
