Crist: ‘We Are a Country That Stands for Freedom of Religion’

US News • Views: 3,630

Finally! A Republican politician who isn’t diving into the Muslim-hating gutter: Crist backs Obama on controversial Islamic center.

Oh, wait … that’s right. Crist was purged from the Republican Party as a RINO.

Panama City, Florida (CNN) – In a boost for President Obama on a red-hot controversy, Florida Gov. Charlie Crist told CNN Saturday that he fully supports Obama’s decision to back construction of an Islamic center and mosque near New York’s ground zero.

“I think he’s right - yeah,” Crist, who was elected governor as a Republican but is now running for Senate as an independent candidate, told CNN. “We are a country in my view that stands for freedom of religion. You know, respect for others. I know there are sensitivities and I understand that, but I think Mayor Bloomberg is right and I think the President is right.”

Of course, this will only serve to make the right feel better about themselves for driving him out.

IT's terrifying that standing for the Constitution became a political strategy question for any of our politicians. There is absolutely no ambiguity here to the question.

To review - Republican politicians who support sanity and tolerance on this issue:

Charlie Crist - left the party
Mike Bloomberg - left the party

Apparently the venn diagram of tolerance/sanity and Republicans yields two entirely separate circles...

It seems like the Republicans with actual charisma and a sense of self, like Bloomberg, Schwarzenegger, and Crist all did the best they could to try and make the party semi-functional, and then just said fuck it.

Is there even one Republican politician who isn't joining the bigots on this issue?

I haven't seen any. They're ALL on board.

It's the biggest lemming brigade of ignorance we've seen in a long, long time. Once upon a time you could rely on people like McCain to add sanity to the debate but they are treading water as fast as they can and that means giving over to the vox populi.

I blame Ronald Reagan.

It was a devil's bargain when he brought Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson into the process -- they'd agree to get all their followers on board with conservative economics and foreign policy, in return for the Republican party adopting their version of Christian Values (tm) on social issues and lifestyle matters. I don't think RR anticipated that the early 80's purge of liberals from the party would advance endlessly, chipping away rightward toward the fringes until all that's left of the GOP is wild-eyed fanatics.

When your choices are saying fuck it or whoring yourself out to the racists, bigots, anti-intellectuals, and xenophobes to get votes, I think the choice is clear. I may disagree with Crist, Bloomberg, and Schwarzenegger on a variety of things, but at least on issues like these, they've been right to buck the party and piss off the wingnuts. If being a Republican means signing off on all the idiocy currently infecting the party, I'd run like hell from the party too.

I'm convinced this is why Huntsman got the hell out of Utah and agreed to be Obama's ambassador to China. He saw what was happening in the GOP and wanted no part of it at all, so he got as far away as possible.

That was compounded by Rove's 'permanent Republican majority' by appealing to the evangelical base. They stitched together social conservatives with fiscal conservatives but the wheels came off the wagon when they sold out the fiscals for the socials under W.

My constant beef about the GOP -- of which I'm still a member -- is their obsession with sex and religion. They are bordering on theocracy. They should stick with the Constitution -- especially the concept of limited government and thus maximum individual freedom -- and their traditional support for national defense and free enterprise. That's quite enough to distinguish them from the other party.

Crist is a mixed bag, in that he also supported Obama's stimulus. That indicated an abandonment of Republican principles. It's very fine to be for religious freedom, but he's still not much of a Republican -- at least not the traditional type. I can't imagine that Goldwater or Regan would endorse him.

Also, people always forget that Reagan, the hallowed saint of conservatism, was a union leader (SAG) and stayed in the house of a muslim imam (the Aga Khan) while negotiating with Gorbachev in Geneva.

24 Randall Gross  Sun, Aug 15, 2010 11:28:50am

The current crazy dissolution is simply due to the death of Weyrich, Reagan, Buckley and others in the last century leadership. That leadership realized that there was a line that the country would not cross when it comes to bigotry and they all practiced realpolitik accordingly. They kept the fringe haters outcast while still "dog whistling" and under the counter funding enough to keep them working with or for conservatism for the most part.

That leadership is now gone, and the party took serious body blows in 2006 and 2008. In desperation they opened the tent flaps to let the crazies back in, never noticing the large exodus as moderate and mainstream voters left en masse. The big tent collapsed to the small southern pup tent.

Yes he supported the stimulus and took the money. Many other GOP governors opposed the stimulus but still took the money and heralded the projects that were a result of stimulus money. Who is more honorable?

A bit hasty there, aren't you? There have to be Republicans who don't live in New York and aren't going to wade into an issue where tolerance/sanity has already won, stirring a pond they don't inhabit.

Time was, anyhow, that Republicans believed in government minding its own business and leaving people to sort out their own affairs when possible. An Oklahoma Republican has other worries than mosques in New York, and may legitimately busy himself with his own work instead of weighing in on this topic.

And while we're on the topic of Oklahoma, let's see. It's the heart of darkness, going from a number of recent posts here. It's also the home of the most successful and accomplished Indian tribe, the Cherokee. Cowboys and Indians seem to get along well enough in OK. How could that be, if in fact OK is uniquely benighted?

It's a bit late to complain about the GOP's emphasis on sex, religion, and social issues, considering it's been the primary focus of the party for decades now. Republicans haven't been about limited government in any capacity in at least thirty years. They just managed to string the fiscal conservatives and defense hawks along all these years by talking about their issues.

What we're seeing now is the full embrace by the GOP of the bigots, the racists, and xenophobes, the anti-intellectuals, and the social conservatives at the expense of any sort of sanity. They've decided to go full retard and as far to the right as possible, because someone convinced these imbeciles that they lost in 2008 because McCain wasn't conservative enough. They took the absolute wrong lesson from that election, and we're watching the GOP fall apart as a result.

That's my feeling as well. The Republicans have probably hurt themselves and their midterm gains will be much smaller than they should be but I'm not seeing a whole lot of hard evidence (polls, etc) showing a mass exodus from the Republican party.

As a result of Nixon's "southern strategy," the GOP has actually become the party that spouts all the views of William Jennings Bryan. And Bryan -- amusingly enough -- is the one "progressive" that Glenn Beck never mentions. I wonder why.

The Democrats may also be too dumb to point out the crazyness, it's happened before.

A lot of people forget that this house was gerrymandered quite effectively on behalf of the GOP (for the most part) in 2002, so the Dems are holding very, very, large majorities considering the nature of the districts.

Not that they know what to do with them, of course.

re: #15 erraticsphinx

I think they are just completing their transformation into the "Christian White peoples party".

It has been in the works for quite some time.

Is there a danger here in framing the issue that way? Suppose your pov is accepted universally.

Whites, if they were to vote as a bloc to the extent blacks do, and vote Republican, would sweep Republicans into office in almost every state and of course the presidency. Racial relations today are good, somewhat improved from decades ago when they were already not that bad, and much improved from the 1940s when we last saw white-on-black race riots.

This can all be lost, though it would take a lot of bad breaks. One such bad break would be if whites started thinking along us/them lines with race being the dividing line.

It's simply not true that the Republican party best represents the interests or the wants of white voters. But neither is it true that the Democratic party best represents the interests and wants of Hispanic voters, or even black voters. Class matters. Regional issues matter. Personality even plays a role. While there are correlations between voting behavior and race, they're not absolute, and if people looked to their own lives and thought for themselves, those correlations would become even weaker. The LAST thing we want is for them to become stronger.

Harry Reid, yes, I'm talking to you.

Surely, you jest.

Nearly every nontroversy the GOP signs on to has a whiff of racism, nativism, and bigotry lingering about it.

Consolidating the white vote is the ONLY way they can stay in power, since through their own actions they have long lost the black vote, and are in the process of losing the Latino vote.

There's a very simple way to tamp down on the racial resentment that is bubbling: Don't give out dogwhistles to the racist base!

Well, one Republican spoke honestly on the issue:

"Intellectually the President may be right. But this is an emotional issue and people who lost kids, brothers, sisters, fathers, do not want that mosque in New York and it's going to be a big, big issue for Democrats across this country," Ed Rollins, a Republican strategist, told CBS' "Face The Nation" program. "

I guess we need a POTUS that tosses out the constitution protections based on emotions, not reason. BTW, the emotions lead many to not want a mosque built anywhere, not just NY.

Rick Perry. Man that is tough to say. Can't stand the man.

Perry's quote:

"I'm a big believer in freedom of religion but believe it would be best for all involved to put the facility elsewhere," Perry said. "However, zoning is a local responsibility and as a staunch supporter of the 10th Amendment, I do not think the federal government should take steps to intercede or overrule the wishes of local residents. The citizens of New York City will decide the fate of this building."

That's kind of wishy washy support. It's not the Separation Clause with Perry, it's all about local control.

Unless it's imminent domain, educational policy, or anything passed by the Austin City Council. Then it's bad.

Interesting that Rick Perry's comment shows the potential conflict within Rollins' tactic:

"I'm a big believer in freedom of religion but believe it would be best for all involved to put the facility elsewhere," Perry said. "However, zoning is a local responsibility and as a staunch supporter of the 10th Amendment, I do not think the federal government should take steps to intercede or overrule the wishes of local residents. I couldn't sleep last night, and was poking around on the internet, and saw where someone posted something about LGF, one of those - well, he used to think this, now he thinks this things about Charles.

The thing they pointed to was a post where a school in some state, and Islamic school, was being looked at or shut down, and then some of the current mosque posts here.

They missed two big points:

1. In the school post - Charles' post was an informational post. There wasn't an editorial content in it, that I recall. The editorial content took place in the comments, and

2. There is a huge difference between a state looking at and possibly shutting down a school (any school) that may not be adhering to the state's curriculum standards, and looking at the building of a mosque.

I cannot understand why those folks don't seem to get it.

What are you saying there? Other races don't have the sense to look into issues? They can't think for themselves?
Here's the problem with Republicans. It's never the message when people disagree or don't vote for them, it's just that you don't understand the message.

Beyond words. Newt Gingrich sharing the podium with anti-American and seditious Pam Geller alongside Geert Wilders a far-right bigot who hold office in a foreign state. When do the EDL and other Euro-fascist groups show up?

Didn't Geert recently (in the past 5-6 months) go on a clandestine-ish tour of the US and meet up with several GOP figures??

Well, they happen to have many stations up there.

Here is the full list. Just look at the coordinates.

[Link: data.giss.nasa.gov...]

This of course does not include satellite data that also goes into the models.

I mentioned in the downstairs thread that I thought where Mr. Horn got confused was where he was claiming there were no land-based stations on the Arctic Ocean. Key word there being "ocean".

I have quite a few funny stories to tell about Donato and the Tamp twit.
Right after Trajan (Rodan) failed miserably at his first few stalker sites, he hooked up with Donato and they made a disastrous troll attack on Think Progress...there were no survivors.

These guys are little more than good comedy material.

Yeah but right now let's give savage his woman abusing, due. I just love the idea of an aging, dweeby, unemployed trucker, who lives with his mom, that he screams at, going to ozz-fest to "be cool."

Actually, I got confused, because I mis read arctic, as opposed to ant-arctic. There are certainly many weather stations on the ice and continual input of data from submarines, air craft and satellites.

Gingrich, Bolton, Breitbart Team Up With Far-Right Muslim-Basher Geert Wilders For 9/11 Rally

The right-wing group Stop Islamization of America (SIOA) has announced that it will be hosting a rally against the proposed Cordoba House Islamic community center on September 11.

The confirmed list of speakers includes former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton, Andrew Breitbart, and, notably, the far-right Dutch Parliamentarian Geert Wilders. “Islam is not a religion, it’s an ideology,” Wilders told the Guardian in 2009, “the ideology of a retarded culture.”

In the past, Wilders’ extremism has been condemned by conservatives such as Bill Kristol, Charles Krauthammer, and even Glenn Beck, who called Wilders “fascist.” It’s a clear sign of how far the Republicans have shifted to the right and embraced Islamophobia as a political tool that movement figures like Gingrich, Bolton, and Breitbart now have no problem sharing a stage with Wilders.

Geert Wilders—who has publicly compared the Koran to "Mein Kampf"—is scheduled to make public appearances in Washington next week, including a Feb. 27 press conference at the National Press Club. Wilders is seeking to promote his movie "Fitna," an incendiary short documentary film that depicts Islam as a religion of terrorists.

Ohh Iron fist would love to meet me in person...

That is entertaining. The more they brag about how tough they are, the more obvious it is that they are yet another ninja in their own minds.

Just a simple rule. People who actually know martial arts minimize bragging, This is partially because they know how very serious a fight could get. It is also because they don't need to overcompensate for their lack of prowess.

Fist is either a little kid or, like Savage, another chicken legged beer gutted loser around 50.

Fist, simply watching Van Dame films does not transfer skill.

It looks like we may have a new leader in the "Which member of the Republican Party will have the most over-the-top outrageous outrage" hyperbole sweepstakes regarding President Obama's support of the right to build the Cordoba Project, and it's actually an unlikely one.

Ed Rollins, today on "Face the Nation"

Obama's comments "probably the dumbest thing that any president has said"

"This is an emotional issue," Rollins said. "Intellectually the president may be right. But this is an emotional issue. People who lost kids, brothers, sisters, fathers, what have you, do not want that mosque in New York."

Ed Gillespie, former Republican National Committee chairman, also weighed in.

"I thought it was an incredibly revealing comment by the president. You know, he basically said that the 70% of Americans who are opposed to this controversial imam building this controversial mosque at ground zero are seeking to deny the religious freedom of Muslims in this country. That's how he cast it," Gillespie said.

Has the RNC been huffing paint thinner for the past month or something?

re: #67 avanti

Well, one Republican spoke honestly on the issue:

"Intellectually the President may be right. But this is an emotional issue and people who lost kids, brothers, sisters, fathers, do not want that mosque in New York and it's going to be a big, big issue for Democrats across this country," Ed Rollins, a Republican strategist, told CBS' "Face The Nation" program. "

I guess we need a POTUS that tosses out the constitution protections based on emotions, not reason. BTW, the emotions lead many to not want a mosque built anywhere, not just NY.

That's the issue for me. How far is emotional response allowed to drive us?

Given that Manhattanites, who actually have to live with the footprint of the WTC are more positive toward the mosque than those of us farther away...I have to wonder.

Bad enough that he had to shed the name Trajan and start over as Rodan. Troll central did a clean up, they made three of his stalker blogs vanish.
How can anyone take a loser like that seriously?

Donoto was inept because he always over reached, he tried to pretend to be well educated and it wasn't difficult to tear him to pieces by exposing him as a fraud. They were so lame that I began to think they just weren't trying anymore, nobody could be that stupid.

And it is pretty typical really.

The reason I keep looking there is that they really are representative of the sorts who like Gellar and Malkin and Rush and Palin. Thsi is what happens when you allow utter losers to stew in revenge fantasies for years fueld by Fox propaganda.
