Keith Jarrett: Lausanne, March 20, 1973, Part 2

Music • Views: 5,029

Every few years I rediscover a monumental work of improvisation, one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever recorded: Keith Jarrett’s Solo Concerts: Bremen & Lausanne. I first heard this record in a small sushi bar in Tokyo in 1974, and it hasn’t aged; if anything, it’s more moving and profound than ever.

This four-part video playlist is the second half of the Lausanne concert, beginning with Keith going inside the piano. (The sound is slightly better if you switch the video to 480p.)

Thanks for keeping Jarrett so far to the fore, Charles. He's one of those that is electrically connected to what FZ called The Big Note, in my mind. The only other more lyrical player I ever heard was Bill Evans.

Tyner's solo work was pretty breathtaking, too.

But Jarrett is a walking conduit of wonder and beauty.

Researchers find a 'liberal gene'

Liberals may owe their political outlook partly to their genetic make-up, according to new research from the University of California, San Diego, and Harvard University. Ideology is affected not just by social factors, but also by a dopamine receptor gene called DRD4. The study's authors say this is the first research to identify a specific gene that predisposes people to certain political views.

Appearing in the latest edition of The Journal of Politics published by Cambridge University Press, the research focused on 2,000 subjects from The National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. By matching genetic information with maps of the subjects' social networks, the researchers were able to show that people with a specific variant of the DRD4 gene were more likely to be liberal as adults, but only if they had an active social life in adolescence.

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter affecting brain processes that control movement, emotional response, and ability to experience pleasure and pain. Previous research has identified a connection between a variant of this gene and novelty-seeking behavior, and this behavior has previously been associated with personality traits related to political liberalism.

Lead researcher James H. Fowler of UC San Diego and his colleagues hypothesized that people with the novelty-seeking gene variant would be more interested in learning about their friends' points of view. As a consequence, people with this genetic predisposition who have a greater-than-average number of friends would be exposed to a wider variety of social norms and lifestyles, which might make them more liberal than average. They reported that "it is the crucial interaction of two factors – the genetic predisposition and the environmental condition of having many friends in adolescence – that is associated with being more liberal." The research team also showed that this held true independent of ethnicity, culture, sex or age.

Fowler concludes that the social and institutional environment cannot entirely explain a person's political attitudes and beliefs and that the role of genes must be taken into account. "These findings suggest that political affiliation is not based solely on the kind of social environment people experience," said Fowler, professor of political science and medical genetics at UC San Diego.

There was a massacre just as big about 3 miles from El Paso a few days ago. Yesterday they closed the bridge because three federal police agents were killed just on the other side. 140 miles is relatively nice.

I think the Tea Partiers are going to just get more and more batshit crazy because once they get in, the GOP is going to try to keep them from going completely guanomanic to avoid a really bad backlash in 2012.

Once they're in power, they will be held resposible for actually getting something done. To the extent that they don't they'll be out on their ears just as fast as they came in.

How Rep. Michele Bachmann Used Mobile Ads to Turn Beer and Corn Dogs Into Votes From Fair Folk

By now, you know that political candidates are tossing ads onto mobile devices by the truckload. And you probably also know that mobile advertising gives campaigns control over the geographic reach of their ads, so that, for example, if you’re a Republican trying to get out the vote in Texas, you can configure your campaign so that the ad appears on phones in Dallas and Houston but not in Austin. But some campaigns are getting even more extreme in how they deploy ads to mobile devices by using a tactic that strategist Eric Frenchman calls “hyper-local targeting” or a “mobile surge”--candidates configure ad campaigns around specific events.

The most creative use of that tactic probably was an ad Frenchman orchestrated for Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann last summer. Bachmann’s team had prepared a television commercial lambasting her opponent’s (alleged) support for taxes on beer, corn dogs, and deep-fried bacon. (“Alleged” because the accuracy of the claims around the corn dog and bacon taxes has since been challenged.) The ad was scheduled to run while the Minnesota State Fair was taking place. Frenchman, who works for Connell Donatelli, realized it would be amazingly powerful to get that ad in front of fairgoers, while they were at the fair itself.

if they fail at any of the things they ran on (the tea party candidates who manage to get elected) there will be all kinds of hell to pay. Of course they have to get elected first. If the GOP doesn't take both the house and the senate with the way they've been predicting and the way the media has been saying it will be even worse.

And a stomp to the head, once you have someone down, is not a restraining gesture. It wasn't heat of the moment either. It's quite deliberate.

the only ones who should have "restrained" her were the police, obviously if they were there they did not perceive her as being much of a threat. What the paul-tard supporters did was nothing short of vigilante style crap that has become all too common place when they disagree with someone. Mullah Buzzy, otherwise known as Buzzsawmonkey writes some truly deranged stuff:

“Anti-gay rights” is problematic, for there are no Constitutional rights that are denied the homosexually-inclined. “Anti-gay privileges” doesn’t sound nearly so sexy, though, does it? But since “gay” is a purely political designation for a grievance constituency whose component members constantly alter under highly malleable definitions by a political lobby, it is up to you to define with specificity—as you do not—what this group consists of, and what “rights” it is being denied.

Gay is a purely political designation designed to create grievance? Who'd have thought it was a sexual preference for getting it on with partners of the same gender and something much more fundamental. As to what is being denied, we have a complete denial the denial here. So a short list. 1. The right to serve their nation in the military openly. They do already anyway and have, with distinction since ancient times. Ever hear of the Spartans? 2. The right to not be harassed in the workplace or refused adoption. 3. The right to have their long term civil unions put on the same footing as any other civil union.

KT,

They all knew her and the game was already well under way. She was there and they had already blocked her once so she ran around them once the car came to a stop.

I could see them blocking or restraining if she was a security threat, her being unknown. But she was not unknown, they knew her and she knew them. Therefore, I find that an excuse, remotely plausible, sure. They all knew she was a MoveOn plant which removes their excuse as a security threat.

She was also playing part of the game of political theater but does not deserve the throwdown nor the stomping.

The Stomper obviously is not justified or warranted, you can see him angry about it. This has no effect on his case.

It doesn't appear the police were there. Once again this forces me to side with the wingnuts. I'm pretty sure it's standard security common sense to have police at the point where the candidate exits the car. It's when they are at their most vulnerable. She should have been cuffed at least temporarily after the first time she rushed the car and searched/questioned by police. Her repeated attempts and lack of police protection made this a very dangerous situation.
If police were on the scene there's actually a decent chance she could have been shot. You just can't behave like that around elected officials or candidates.

Also, there is nothing wrong with citizens trying to restrain a potential assualter (is too a word :P), which is why we have things like "Citizen's Arrest".

What you have just said is categorically wrong. Assault-- the attempt to commit battery-- is a misdemeanor in almost all cases. To even begin a 'citizen's arrest' you have to witness a felony.

Now, the cops-- and judges, and juries-- often go easy on people who thought they were acting to prevent violence. They take an enormously dim view of people who escalate the violence. The Paulians escalated the violence twice, once when they wrestled her to the ground, and again when they stomped on her.

If the candidate, or any of his supporters, felt threatened by a girl with a poster, once they had pulled her away from the car, the threat had passed. Nothing justifies the violence of her head being stomped on the curb once she was on the ground."

I don't think there's any excuse for even throwing her down. As for the legality of cordoning her off or not, that's really a police issue. I doubt that she was deemed a real security threat because she was identified as a MoveOn prankster early on trying to get a picture with Paul and frustrations got the better of a few of them (besides Stomper Tim).

While on a literal level Ms Valle could be should to have 'contributed to the situation' and cannot agree that she deserved even a throw down or manhandling.

Is that really what you saw? What I saw was a crush of men grabbing her as she got too close for comfort, and the sign got pushed towards the window in the scuffle. Granted it wasn't very smart of her to be fucking around like that, but I caution against allegations that she intended to assault Paul when the situation was so fluid and ambiguous.

This does nothing to mitigate the fact that kicking a downed opponent in the head isn't even allowed in MMA style mutually agreed upon unarmed combat, let alone doing it to a restrained, prone woman.

Oh, just stop. Show me the tea party woman in a flag T shirt getting her head stomped.

Restrain fine. Stomp, not so good.

Restrain not fine, actually. Restrain really easy to hurt someone when you don't know what you're doing. Restrain excusable, if the heat of the moment, but not fine.

Hey! Do you still have the chimes at class? When I read that post I thought, "Man, that is so Private School."

Sure we got chimes. It goes like this:

Ding!

(talk talk talk)

Ding!

(talk talk talk)

Ding! "Sixth grade! I need your attention!"

(talk talk talk)

Ding! "Sixth grade!"

This continues until I shout like a drill instructor.

I knew right away that this was some lefty cook that was trying to get a reaction. Any reaction.
The only part I don't agree with is the foot stomp.

I love being on the right side of something right from the get go..
It feels sooo good. :)

How are you on the right side of this exactly?

....I caution against allegations that she intended to assault Paul when the situation was so fluid and ambiguous.

This does nothing to mitigate the fact that kicking a downed opponent in the head isn't even allowed in MMA style mutually agreed upon unarmed combat, let alone doing it to a restrained, prone woman.

I'm not saying she intended to harm him but she very easily could have. She could have had a weapon and at the time of the incident nobody knew if she was armed or not. That's why the police should have restrained, questioned and searched her after the first attempt. Allowing her to run around like a maniac is a danger to the candidate and her.

That she was just out to agitate. To get a reaction.

I don't think so. She was trying to pull a stunt but the police on the scene wouldn't have known what her intentions were. She should have been arrested the first time.

175 Mad Prophet Ludwig  Wed, Oct 27, 2010 5:10:28pm

WTF is going on here? If she was such a threat, then the police should have handled it. A bunch of unlicensed hoodlums do not get to chase her down, manhandle her and stomp her head.

If we don't manhandle the Fred Phelps losers, we don't manhandle her.

I am not going to watch a party of blame the victim or any justification of the actions of the Paulians.

Anyone justifying that should be ashamed.

Cool. Can you provide or at least point me in a direction where I can find more information? Much appreciated.

Try France 24... I don't have the direct links right now, was looking on France 24, there are a lot of articles on the recent crackdown's on Roma's and Muslim immigrants... you're going to have to dig through them...

But, if you want a "general" confirmation to what you read, I can tell you that there had been some demonstrations in the suburbs, and there were Muslims that took to gathering in the street and praying.

As far as I know, unless something happened over the last three days that I was out of town, none of these incidents have happen in Paris proper.

re: #160 Slumbering Behemoth

Unstable people do unreasonable things. Not every potential shooter behaves in the same pattern. She clearly should not have been stomped on, that was over the line and I'm not even arguing that.

But I don't think simple restraint (which this wasn't, if you've read what I've actually typed) is out of the question when someone like that goes rushing at a politician.

Putting someone on the ground is not 'simple restraint'.

Look, I used to be a bouncer. In a bar, where you're acting as the agent of the owner, on his own property, you are allowed to use absolute minimum restraint to move the person off the premises, if they haven't actually taken a violent action. You are not allowed to push them down to the ground. You're not allowed, actually, to restrain them at all-- except what is necessary to move them away.

Again: it may be excusable that they put her on the ground. It doesn't make it an okay action to take. It means that it can be excused in the heat of the moment-- but it's still wrong to do, just like tackling a shoplifter is wrong to do, if you're a passerby.

And I still don't see her 'rushing'. She's not a goddamn linebacker.

Listening to NPR this morning, and a Hispanic woman called in to ask Meg Whitman's spokesman about her policy on education for undocumented people...he gave some horseshit answer about undocumented workers coming here to gain knowledge then going back to their home countries...I'm surprised he didn't complain about illegal aliens stealing federally funded public radio time.

188 BishopX  Wed, Oct 27, 2010 5:14:25pm

Going back to freetoken's OT post about liberal genetics, there was an older article in the Scientific American linking fear response to political attitudes. Namely people who expressed conservative American political views had a stronger fear reaction when startled.

It sounds like everyone here is agreeing that the goons went to far. The bigger question is what led them to do that.

Arrest her for what? Show me intent. Otherwise she was just trying to show Rand Paul the sign and probably rattle of some comments. She did not try to throw that sign in the vehicle. She was brushed aside by the man in the woolen jacket and then he stepped away.

Yes. Now I see the tie in with Friday prayers and the pork parties.

I can understand the resentment coming from non-Muslim French citizens if the streets are blocked and access to their homes is restricted due to religious ceremony.

Still kicking myself for not going to see him last time he was in Europe, although not as much as I regret not going to see Esbjorn Svensson Trio when I had the chance. Carpe diem and all that (cos you never know when a jazz pianist is going to drown!)
