California Science Center vs. The Creationist Lobby

Wingnuts • Views: 29,099

(Click to enlarge.)Here’s an update to a story we covered last December, in which the creationist “think tank” called the Discovery Institute used a right wing front group to sneak a creationist film into the schedule of the California Science Center — and then the front group promptly sued when the CSC canceled the film.

Well, now the California Science Center has filed a counter-suit, seeking compensatory and punitive damages for the alleged fraudulent activities of the American Freedom Alliance and the Discovery Institute. The jury trial is scheduled to begin on June 13, 2011. Greg Laden has more details, and the National Center for Science Education has made a lot of the relevant documents available at their website.

This fits perfectly with a post I made just as the last thread closed:

Notes from the Future:

As many of you know, my secret identity as a Zionist Overlord of Remulak is actually a joke. I am really an historian from the year 3291 doing research on the fall of the American order and the rise of the post collapse barbaric states.

I have also told you that telling you your future won’t change anything because I can’t change history - because I didn’t.

But all that time travel stuff is for the physics geeks. I really don’t know about Cauchy information on converging manifolds. I’m just a grad student doing a thesis.

I want to know how a society that had everything it could possibly want could be so cruel to its own members, so short sighted and so stupid.
My thesis will be quite an eye opener, because in my time, someone like Palin is difficult to imagine. In my time, ambitious sociopaths and paranoid delusional malignant narcissists with IQ’s below 100 are treated as wards of the state, not made into political leaders. The ones with IQs above 100 are sent on deep space survey missions.

So let me tell you about the future as far as you are concerned.

After a successful series of “scandals” that had little merit of truth but much play time on Fox networks the Democrats were very sorely weakened as a party and never regain their balance.

In 2012 Palin runs for President. She narrowly loses a hotly disputed election amidst false claims of Democratic voter fraud manufactured by Fox networks. There are violent riots in many parts of the south and the Midwest. Many Muslims are killed. A bill passed by the GOP congress forces a “recount” in the state of Ohio to be counted. In order to soothe the riotous problems in the country, the Democrats agree to it - believing they will be vindicated.

Whether or not the recount was kosher is hotly disputed. Watching the nature of the times from here, I am inclined to believe it was actually kosher. People are that dumb.

However, in February of 2013, President Palin is sworn into office.

During the Palin years, she actually did very little domestically other than expand “the rights” of fossil fuel companies and start an initiative to reform education in America. In 2014, America became the only Western nation to consider Biblical Creationism a competing scientific theory by law. After packing the Supreme court, sexual education was removed to a question of severely curtailed state initiatives. In Massachusetts still women got pregnant the old fashioned way. In Alabama, it came from sitting in the same seat as a boy.

There were also the famous NASA hearings where several leading scientists were imprisoned for their anti-American activities and a number of journalists were imprisoned under the “fair reporting” act of 2015.

Foreign policy wise, PAlin is best known as the leader who gave Japan to China and the leader who broke the special relationship with Britain.

The story goes, and I hope to verify this with my research here, that the British PM was overheard to say something about Palin’s dress and demeanor not being particularly becoming for a head of state. His implication was that Palin tried much too hard to flirt when she thought she was not getting her way. Palin heard this and famously announced that:

The PM is not just very British. He really is gay.

While Fox chortled. The British took great offence.

To be continued….

However, the true disaster of Palin was the Second Mexican war.

What started as an attempt to curtail Mexican drug cartel violence with her famous quip:

If you can’t police yourselves, someone needs to, you betcha!

Perhaps an arguable case for some sort of support and intervention of an escalating spiral of misery in Mexico, under Palin’s hands managed to unify the Mexicans against America in common cause.

Of course Mexico lost. They never stood a chance. However, with Russian and Chinese armaments, they did put up a sufficient fight that the American economy, already strained nearly to breaking, finally imploded under its debt. The war dragged on for three years and cost 4 trillion Yaun.

This was China’s long term game plan all along. With the Yuan pegged to the Euro as the new international, standard America found itself trillions of Euros in debt and with a currency crisis that collapsed the American economy completely.

During this entire period of course nothing was done about Carbon emissions and the Greenland tipping point was crossed. Fortunately, the collapse of the American economy prevented sufficient emissions that the methane tipping point was not crossed and the Emergency emissions treaty of 2056 prevented a total calamity.

As it was though, the upheavals of the late 21st century brought about the collapse of China, Russia and Most of Europe as well.

Ironically, in 2094, Mexico was able to reclaim Texas in a de facto manner by a simple mass exodus. However it was too late.

Perhaps next time I will write to you about the Barony of Iowa and the motorcycle knights of the Kansas wastes.

But to do that, I will have to write about the Dengue fever Epidemic in America in 2047 and that is really depressing.

It’s how it should be done. My condolences. When my grandmother died in 2005. We celebrated both the lives of her and my grandfather whom I never knew that died in 1979. It was a truly moving ceremony and the most awesome thing that came of it was a photo of all the grandchildren of my grandparents. We range in age from my cousin who was born in ‘59 to my youngest brother who was born in 2001. Believe the old Irish proverb is to “celebrate the life rather than mourn the dead.” Always liked that.

I am surprised you could not tell the sarcasm.

However, I do think it is obvious on the face of it, that anyone who thinks that Palin is smart, or that Beck is to be taken seriously is OBVIOUSLY severely mentally impaired in one form or another.

Since you do neither, I am not calling you a full on mental degenrerate like those people.

Since despite continued blogging here and all of the evidence you see of what The GOP and its spokes holes like Rush and Beck and Palin and Fox are - and what their disastrous and stupid stances are, yet you still consider yourself a Republican, well… everyone is a little crazy.

119 Summer Seale  Wed, Nov 17, 2010 6:44:20pm

Hi everyone!

Sarah Palin here (talking from Shanghai! The land of different people…)

I’m just so amazed and grateful to everyone, and especially to that long-haired freaky guy named Charles for thinking about me with an automation generation thing that apparently will carry my geniousity everywhere in the internet beyond Facebook and the Googles!

You know, at times like these, when I’m considering a run for the President in 2012, I really have to appreciate all the help everyone is giving me for getting my word out - the word of our American Lord, Our God, who watches over us and tells us how to march forward for His desire.

It can only help America for my words to reach all over the world, because the world wants to be like America. I know this because I lived in a place where I could see another part of the world which only wished it could be as great as our country. Sometimes, my husband and I would sit on the porch and look across the water, thinking about how people in that land so close to us were surviving without the law of our blessed Constitution, and how they might be dreaming of a Freedom that I could bring them, and how I could save their souls by telling them about who made this beautiful world of ours with all the beautiful snow, and also how the Moose tasted there. Is it as good as ours? I think ours is better because our Moose grow up by breathing the air of Freedom. Right, America?

And it’s times like these when people are thinking about me, and my awesome bid for President, and the way I’ve guided you all on FOX NEWS, by being a counselor to you all in these hard times against the Dark Forces in the White House…well it’s times like these that I give thanks for being so revered by a people who should be revered in a country that should be revered for the Lord that they revere. And that’s what people all over the world want: Me. And my pretty red outfits which show that I’m a strong Mama Grizzly leader.

So let’s march forward and let’s spread the message together, America! Let’s make that awesome Sarah Palin generator and let it go rogue! We’re going to send out so many messages of hope for America - real hope that people can hope in so that our country can hopefully rise up and change back to the way it was! Not like Obama selling other stuff to people in the street, but real stuff for real Americans that want real things in their free lives!

Thank you all and God Bless America.

Yeah. It’s beyond my ability or desire to figure it out. He’s a whole barrel full of projection, among other things. Honestly, though, the dissertation he linked to is quite good and informative.

[Link: www.samuelbrenner.com…]

The author of that paper is basically making the argument that the “Americanists” weren’t far outside the mainstream in terms of racism, which is pretty true— a sad commentary on the state of racism in the US at that time. He paints an interesting portrayal of JBS leaders and members who are variously desperate to keep membership up to the extent that they tolerate very racist members as long as they keep that racism somehow separate form official JBS business, or racist in the soft patronizing way— that those poor Negroes can’t see that Martin Luther King is doing them harm rather than good, et al.

I feel that author, too, paints a somewhat more exculpatory account of JBS activities than is actually deemed by what he reveals, but you can be your own judge of that.

It is rather long. I’m glad I read fast.

Well people of your time. This was in New Boston of 2682. What happened was that the AI’s determined that they could do pretty much everything better than humans could. However, unlike your science fiction of today, they were not malevolent. They needed to give the humans under their charge something to keep them occupied.

Really calculating Taylor expansions is not that hard - particularly through a neural link.

However, the AIs failed to take boredom, an sensation they do not comprehend into account. The AIs were simply ignored, voted out of office and later allowed to sit in the basement of NMIT for a few decades.

Ironically, as he AI’s looked for something to do, a young graduate student explained existentialist philosophy to them

The AI’s self terminated.

Their last message was. Cruel universe to be made by an incompetent creator and then have that creator prove it was all for nothing.

It was actually quite tragic.

Is it just a gang mentality? It must be, you’re somehow willing to “forgo condemning” any future torture of US soldiers, but an insult to Republicans is where you draw the line.

I don’t want someone JUST LIKE ME anywhere NEAR the governmental control panel.

Hit me with your best shot. I want to hear your best and brightest, not your most average and mediocre. Impress me, for fuck’s sake!

But as far as I can tell, we’re about as far from that as we are from Alpha Centauri.

America would be SO much better served if its leaders encouraged the people to rise to their potential, rather than pandering to the lowest common denominator.

The biggest problem I have with people to the right of me is I frequently don’t understand their thought processes. The farther right they are the more difficulty I have with understanding how they think. There seems to be a fundamental, almost genetic, difference between how I think and how they think.

You know, I thought of something interesting right now because of you just saying that animals and such are God’s creation. Shouldn’t those people be more hospitable to the idea of wildlife conservation. Since after all we’d be protecting God’s creations in their eyes? Maybe I’m overthinking. Seriously though there’s something too cute about little monkeys in people clothes. I want to hire one as a chaffeur :).

There was a letter to the editor in the local paper a few years back in which the writer felt protection for the earth, ie. no excessive logging here in the northwest, was unnecessary as God was going to lay the rapture thing on us and there would be a New Earth so why bother.
In recent times there has been a christian green movement afoot which subscribed to the idea that since this was God’s Earth we should be more careful with it. Ironically it is getting strangled in the cradle by the present christian political milieu.

The state of California has a law that the deceased must be IDed by immediate family just before the casket is sealed, apparently there have been mix ups in the past that have necessitated this law.

My sister and I (wow never thought I’d use that expression) are afraid that my mom will lose it when she sees my dad in a coffin.

They don’t think. If hey did, they would not be on the right.

I wouldn’t say that, many are quite intelligent, certainly more than I am. What I have observed is that many are, IMHO, too willing to trust their initial gut reaction without spending time considering alternatives. To me that looks like an emotional response. They make moral decisions immediately and value sticking to that decision, where I spend a great deal of time mulling over the potential consequences.

I think their quick decisions can contribute to being good business people but bad scientists, whereas my ‘cogitation’ would probably make me a crappy business person (I am) but a decent scientist.

OK this is more sick than sick:

[Link: www.ktul.com…]

Protesters from a Kansas church who have gained attention through picketing at the funerals of fallen military servicemen are now turning their attention to protesting at the funerals of children to retaliate for their tires being slashed at a McAlester serviceman’s funeral last week.

Members of Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas will be in Burneyville in southern Oklahoma today. That’s where a funeral is being held for eight-year-old Jalen Wolfe, who died in an accident at the Love County Fairgrounds last week.

On the WBC website, members say they are protesting because of the vandalism they suffered over the weekend while protesting at the funeral of McAlester serviceman Jason McCluskey.

They say quote “the Lord curses them by killing Oklahoma’s children and casting them into Hell.” Furthermore, their website reads “Thank God For More Dead Children In Oklahoma!”.

In addition to today’s funeral, the protestors are scheduled to return to Owasso Thursday to protest at the funeral of Melissa Hanslovan of Collinsville, who died Sunday after a one-car crash over the weekend.

The protesters were in Owasso earlier this year for the funeral of Specialist Andrew Looney. They say soldiers are being killed because of God’s revenge against America for its tolerance of homosexuality.

I am going to go on record here and say enough is enough with these loons.

They are literally saying if you don’t like us desecrating soldiers funerals, we will desecrate children’s funerals. It is a form of terrorism pure and simple.

There is a social contract and part of that social contract prevents such behavior. I really don’t care about the laws. I don’t care about precious “free speech” arguments. I want these freaks demonstrably shown that there is such a thing as a time and a place for everything and that this behavior is intolerable.

If that means laws need to be passed to prevent desecrating the funerals of others, so be it. If that means some concerned citizens simply beat the hell out of them then so be it. The fact that our laws are abused such that a grieving family of a child can become a target in a cynical attempt to terrorize others, is intolerable.

Wasn’t there a case similar to that recently? A civil suit. I think Bill O’Reilly, among others, offered to pay the damages if the relative was found against.

Here we go. It wasn’t an assault case, it was a lawsuit.

Phelps is actually a disbarred lawyer. His daughter and several others of the clan are still attorneys. They are ridiculously litigious as a group and actually make a lot of their money by bullying settlements on people.

However, something like one of them trying to speak in court through broken teeth and a wired jaw would not garner them sympathy. At this point they are too well known and too well reviled.

Any smart defendant would demand a jury trial. Two minutes of the crying and very angry mother on the stand and the jury will ask the judge for damages to the family.

323 Dark_Falcon  Wed, Nov 17, 2010 7:49:26pm

re: #306 Rightwingconspirator

Of course they do not. But what if they could not be seen or heard? Surrounded and drowned out, as in Tulsa? A wall of people at a discrete distance between them and the funeral.

That would work, but how about this instead:

Deploy the Patriot Guard Riders in a more aggressive posture. Use them to tail Phelps family vehicles. If the Phelps Klan goes into a store enroute to a protest, follow them in and announce they are; no clerk will want to serve them. They try to fly, again follow and announce who they are; TSA will pull them aside for cavity searches. Make it plain that whereever they go they will be followed and called out as the scum they are. It’s aggressive, but still non violent.

re: #301 Slumbering Behemoth

Despite being the worst that humanity has to offer, the Phelps cult is pretty smart about that kind of thing, and very legally savvy.

Like I said, Phelps is a disbarred attorney. He was disbarred for filing too many frivolous lawsuits against the wrong people. Many in his clan are attorneys also.

They are very careful to only do their more crazy and despicable stunts in certain places. I am pretty certain that if they tried that stunt up here, they would find themselves in five kinds of legal hurt - if they could get the permits.

But, and here is the kicker, these are your small town yokel attorneys.

And small town courts are a double edged sword. There have been certain towns they wanted to go to where the sheriff was also the judge. The sheriff told them in no uncertain terms that their welcome would be dire.

I’ve been having a quiet evening at home, and my trusty little computer has been working overtime in a variety of ways to show me the various faces of mundane, near-to-home evil.

I don’t understand these people. I simply don’t. I can understand a religious fanatic, but these people aren’t simply fanatics. They’re sadists, engaging in a sort of bloodless serial-killing behavior, slowly devolving and becoming more creative as each successive transgression fails to give them the old charge.

It’s—oh my God.

I have a student this year with that child’s given name.

This is a brilliant comment and likely quite correct. They are a nasty little cult in every sense of the word. Perhaps because of the legal background of Fred they are not violent to outsiders, but they are clearly interested in a weasely sort of violence none the less. And this really is terrorism. They are bringing G-d’s wrath on OK, and an innocent family for the “sin” of someone else slashing their tires. They said so themselves. And they are going to hit another funeral to prove it.

There comes a point where I miss Davidic law. They are clearly beyond redemption. Let G-d sort them out.

Ain’t they? They started with politician’s relatives—like Bill Clinton’s mother—and gay figures, like Randy Shilts, and then they got into the soldier thing at some point—and then at some stage they developed this thing for going to places where there’d been different disasters to act out—they went to West Virginia after that terrible mine accident, for example. Dunno if they worked Katrina. Getting in might have been too much trouble.

Not long ago, they protested the Jewish high school in San Francisco, and the kids made a fundraiser out of it, getting people to pledge donations for every minute they stayed outside the school. Don’t think they stayed long. It’s a bad neighborhood, and I think the local drug dealers might have objected to their racket.

Perhaps the answer is “Yes, I quite agree, but these assholes, like yourself, have free will. In retrospect, that may have been a small design flaw.”

I think the answer is more likely “I’m sorry. The number you have dialed is not a valid number.”

Who would want to go to a heaven populated by Phelps freaks? That would be Hell for everyone else.

I was hanging out with a friend last week, and we somehow started talking about the Jonathan Edwards sermon, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God”. I said something about teaching it last year, but trying not to hold it against the Reverend Edwards, since he had been enjoying his undoubtedly boring and rigorously theologically correct reward these many years.

She said, “You’re awfully generous in that assumption. Because you, unlike Jonathan Edwards, believe in an essentially loving God.”

I am a proud 1st amendment advocate, Just ask. Heh. But one thing I hope to be banned in crush videos. It’s a recent important case. My sense of freedom will not be impinged at all not a scintilla of worry if all of that is banned, seized burned and buried under Yucca mountain.

I feel the same about the Phelps protesters. If they went to jail, my freedoms would not be reduced a bit.

My confidence in our sense of right and wrong would really get a much needed boost. Seriously.

Angels soaring through the air
as they did in Bethlehem
Angels answer every prayer
once they get around to them
Please be patient, an angel will be with thee shortly

Due to increased prayer amounts
Seraphim will have delays
Servicing thy prayer accounts
For the next five million days
Please be patient, an angel will be with thee shortly

Please continue thee to hold
All thy ills will be relieved
Every human grief consoled
In the order’ twas received
Please be patient, an authorized prayer technician will be with thee shortly
Or to save thee time, wait for the chime

Tennessee fans think he is the second coming. I do not believe I am exaggerating.

1) When I was 12 my mom total me to look at that handsome (???) quarterback, because I should marry him someday, he would be very rich. And that is what college football does to a person, because outside of that my mother would Never say anything like that. For example, when I came out she said “I always thought that would be kind of cool”.

2) I turned on a TN boys basketball game last November, and I swear as I turned it on they were talking about Peyton. For no reason, just a timeout conversation.

You know… I’m looking at the Phelps page right now. They actually have a bunch of counters with these numbers:

5,815 - soldiers that God has killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
44,547 - pickets conducted by WBC.
810 - cities that have been visited by WBC.
1012 - weeks that WBC has held daily pickets on the mean streets of doomed america.
357 - people whom God has cast into hell since you loaded this page.
218,400,000+ - gallons of oil that God poured in the Gulf.
$13.8 trillion+ - national debt of doomed america.
8 - people that God saved in the flood.
16,000,000,000 - people that God killed in the flood.
144,000 - Jews that will be saved in these last days.
0 - nanoseconds of sleep that WBC members lose over your opinions and feeeeellllliiiiiings.

Found out dad has been selectively skipping/dumping his meds when he didn’t feel like taking them, namely from the 22 blood thinner injectors he had hidden away (he gets 7 every week) instead of taking them. Once I took all his meds away from him, wrote up a schedule, and then tried to give him his evening meds he started complaining about making him take stuff he didn’t want to take.

He went into the Hospital overnight on Friday to remove a blood clot from his left leg, they failed, they could not get it out. Last time this happened was when they first put him on the blood thinner and the clot dissolved on it’s own. His doctors thought that he was taking it every day…whoops, nope, he has been stashing them instead of taking them because he says they make him feel “tired.” (sure, sure, it is the blood thinners, not the chemo, not the heart meds, not the diuretic, not any of the other 11 drugs he takes every day, and he knows it is the thinner because?)

I guess I have to institute prison ward dispensary mode now, I have to actually see him take it and then perhaps even check under his tongue afterward…the five daily injections for the insulin and blood thinner I will be giving myself, no need to check.

Oh well, I called a couple of his doctors, one more to call in the morning, basically to say “he will not take your prescription, no I don’t exactly know why, he wont talk to me except to yell at me about trying to make him drugs he doesn’t want…”

If he is not going to take some things the least I can do is get them off of his prescription record so his other doctors don’t think he is taking them and prescribing around them…

You would not believe how close I am to just saying “fuck-it” and going backpacking through Brazil or something else equally pointless but personally interesting. (I wont, it would mean letting my brother put Dad into a home.)

But though the faces may be different, the message is classic Reaganesque conservatism: Government is strangling the private sector; taxes need to be cut; regulations need to be loosened or dumped; and states need to fight the federal government every step of the way.

“Hulk” actor joins Arizona sheriff’s posse

Television ‘Hulk’ actor Lou Ferrigno has joined an Arizona sheriff’s posse targeting illegal immigrants in the Phoenix valley area, the sheriff’s office said on Wednesday.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said Ferrigno, 59, a body builder who donned green makeup to star in the popular 1970s television series ‘The Incredible Hulk,’ was among 56 people sworn in as volunteers for an armed immigration posse.

Arpaio said the posse would work with sheriff’s deputies in operations targeting smugglers and businesses suspected of employing illegal immigrants in the county, among other duties.

Yeah, so now Arpaio has an armed gang going around to businesses and doing inspections of businesses. What ever could go wrong?

A mess of a movie that reaches a completely ridiculous and unexpected (but not in a good way) conclusion.

I’ve heard.

Sony is suing Skyline.

Sony Pictures Entertainment is contemplating legal action against Greg and Colin Strause, the directors of Skyline and the owners of Hydraulx Filmz – a visual effects company that contributed to Battle: Los Angeles.

According to Deadline, Sony feels that the Strause brothers should have given them a heads up about their plans to make Skyline before accepting the FX gig on Battle: Los Angeles, which gave them access to the film’s script, storyboards, and animatics.

More to the point, Sony is wondering if Battle: Los Angeles served as inspiration for the brothers to make Skyline and if they used the studio’s resources to polish up the effects on their modestly-budgeted thriller.

In Skyline, ”strange lights descend on the city of Los Angeles, drawing people outside like moths to a flame, where an extraterrestrial force proceeds to swallow the entire human population off the face of the earth.” The story is told from the point of view of four friends who have just returned from a night of partying and the majority of it was shot in Greg Strause’s home.

At the Skyline Comic-Con panel, the brothers cited Paranormal Activity as the main inspiration for their approach to the film. The independent production gave them the freedom to cast lesser-known actors and kept them free from studio interference.

Comic-Con attendees weren’t the only ones taking notice of Skyline. While the film had already blipped on Sony’s radar when Relativity Media acquired the rights back in May, the debut of its trailer and the accompanying panel were what convinced the studio to explore its legal options.

It’s just that my grandma does, and she often complains about certain meds that make her “feel xyz”, when such a thing would make no sense.

I did not think so, he has seemed perfectly rational in most regards, but this argument over the meds that went on for hours this afternoon has kind of got me wondering. He certainly didn’t sound very rational about it at times.

Still I’m willing to give him some credit in that I just took more of his free choice away from him by taking control of all his medications, he should be upset, most especially if he is rational. The problem is I cannot allow him to pick and chose what medications to take especially the blood thinner that he absolutely has to take every day, I would hate to see him get a leg amputation, which is entirely possible at this point, simply because he dislikes the side effects of his medication. Rationally you would think he would dislike losing his left leg considerably more…

Oh, great and wondrous world
How the dice of evolution came
Up with a surprise
To make these tiny particles come alive

Alive, come alive
Alive, alive
Alive, come alive
Alive, alive

And for them to drape all things
With a cosmic blanket of meaning
When dust cherishes no memories
Makes you wonder

Whether man needs the lie
Like air to survive
Man needs the lie
Like air to survive
