The High school sign would read: Congratulations so and so and then something about getting your tickets for the dance and then underneath in big letters GUN SHOW FRI-SAT-SUN!

The question then is, how much do high capacity clips cost, and how much do two lower capacity ones cost?
You're assuming that it costs twice as much as a low capacity one, it might cost more (due to it being an out of the ordinary item) it might cost less (due to bullets being sold in bulk) if its the later or exactly the same then your point stands, but if its the former than it doesn't....

Figure up to 3 to 1.
10 rounds is the usual low cap number. Of course the 30 rd magazine that was used in Arizona was not really for his gun anyway, intended for the full auto military Glock pistol. Too bad it fit. In any case the money issue is not so cut and dry as Rachael seems to think. BTW the 10 rd magazines tend to be expensive. I own a bunch of them as per California law and being a guy that goes to competitions that run you through 300 rounds by the time you finish. Like this. Pure sport.

THIS. EXACTLY THIS.
I don't have an issue with guns themselves. I have an issue with idiots owning guns or keeping them improperly, like where kids can access them. There is no goddamn reason to own a gun if you don't know the first thing about how to properly shoot, clean, handle, store, and maintain a gun.
I'm absolutely in favor of mandatory gun safety training and time on a shooting range before someone gets licensed to own a gun. If we have to take driver's ed before getting behind the wheel of a car, why not require education and training before getting a gun?

I would really like to see thorough enforcement of some of the laws we already have to cut down on gun crimes. When a felon tries to buy a gun and fails the background check he or she can be arrested. That's rare. When a guy buys heavy caliber rifles one after another after another, it's reasonable to check up on those guns. Start arresting the straw men. Put a little less resources into going after illegal drug dealers and get more good investigators after illegal gun runners/dealers.
Take Californians legal example and add lots of years to the sentence if a criminal uses a gun in another criminal act like robbery and rape. Add a decade. If he shoots (even if no one is hit), add 15 years.

Very little, I imagine. But the comparisons between states of gun laws vs gun violence have always been specious and irritating. Obviously a place like Washington, an urban centre with restrictive gun laws, is going to continue to have high amounts of guns and ergo, gun violence when half an hour away are places with weak laws and high amounts of traffic in between. Obviously a sparsely populated state with lax gun laws is going to have less gun violence than a highly populated urban centre with stronger gun laws.
Increased penalties for crimes have worked in places like New York to reduce crime overall. Increased penalties for carrying guns, even if not used in the crime, have worked well in other countries, notably Britain and Australia.

America has lost the moral high ground, though. Beginning on September 11, 2001, collectively as a nation, we condemned the celebrations in the streets throughout the Muslim world. We denounced the carnival atmosphere in the Middle East as the World Trade Center collapsed. We cried for the murder of over 3000 innocent people. We said, how barbaric it was to celebrate death and destruction in that manner. Those people aren’t human, we declared.
Yet what did we do? Celebrate in the streets that Osama bin Laden was dead. We had a party. He was assassinated in his home in a raid that also killed several other men, possibly even one of bin Laden’s sons, and a woman used as a human shield. And we cheer. We dance in the streets. Who is barbaric now?
Probably shouldn't have celebrated the death of Hitler either. Pfft!

In 2000, the members of OakSpring (www.HouseOfOakSpring.org) separated from Ravenwood to go our own way. In 2006, I became the High Priestess of OakSpring, with my husband serving as High Priest. OakSpring is large by Wiccan standards, and has been blessed to own and maintain our covenstead on 38 acres of woodland in the Metro-Atlanta area.
Like most Wiccans, my mundane life is similar to anyone else’s: I go to work each day (for a large engineering firm), bear with traffic, and go home to relax with my family and pets. Living a magical life isn’t always about the spells; it’s about living in a way that is harmonious with Nature, the Universe, and ourselves. I do my best to live in accordance with Wiccan principles every day of my life. I think that is the best way to show the world what Wicca is all about.
Isn't that special!

The great thing about yellow jackets is that they retain their stinger, so they don't actually die after they sting (unlike the honey bee). So while you think the thing is too aggressive, just feel good knowing that it can sting you several times, go up to a rafter to rest for a while, then come back and sting you again later.

Our most drug ridden violent areas are still our most violent areas. Crooks got guns. Because California is so very strict as compared to say Florida, Louisiana or Texas our gun owners are pretty fierce about their rights and their skills.
We still have a ten round limit.
"Assault Guns" (a misnomer but I digress) are banned here.
No full auto guns.
No laser sights on rifles.
Possession of a high capacity magazine will likely get you jailed at least until you post bail.
We still have a ten day wait to buy a gun. Even though a background check takes mere minutes.
Guns long tested and approved approved for cops and the military are subjected to destructive "safety" testing by the state before they can be sold. The smallest change like adding a rail for alternative sights forces another round of destructive testing. Even changing the finish can cause that to happen.
Comparing gun violence in California might be interesting. Unfortunately areas with the highest gun crime rates are often areas with the strictest anti gun laws. Not always. To me the gun violence seems drug crime driven not gun density driven.

When you're talking tough to an insect, you've already lost.
We don't get a lot of them, I suspect it has something to do with the altitude, and in general Colorado doesn't seem to have the same problems with stinging insects that some other lower, wetter climates have, but the few wasps we do have are rather hearty.
East coast, especially north of NYC, you can't dine outside without inviting dozens of them to dine with you.
The lack of wasps in Colorado was one of the attractions for me 20 years ago. I put up with Texas bugs for 20 years, east coast bugs for 20 years, Colorado is a blessing compared to those other places.

As to your main point:
I just looked at the "Homicide Maps" for 2009, 2010, and 2011 (to date) for East Baton Rouge Parish where I live.
You can see the clusters. The biggest one is the downtown/North Baton Rouge area; then there's another to the right of it, which is actually on the eastern edge of the city; then there's another smallish cluster below the downtown one, at the southern edge of the city, this 3rd cluster is noticeable particularly in 2010, not so much in 2009 or 2011. This is the Homicide map, so not all of these are gun crimes, but most of them are. The areas where they are clustered are also our biggest drug/prostitution/burglary/theft areas.

Tiananmen is enormous, far bigger than you imagine it is. In the heart of the city where you are, there will be a lot of signs in poorly translated Chinglish, so you should get by okay. The Forbidden Palace tour is audio and in English too. It is absolutely worth it. The Summer Palace just beyond it is more beautiful, but nothing matches the history of the Forbidden Palace.
Beijing is much cleaner these days, and the days of street bargains and such are past. There are still a few markets, but you'd need a good guide to find them and a driver. Unlike Europe, people really don't speak any English, and won't really be able to help much, but you can manage with some patience. On the south end of Tiananmen there is a strip with a lot of places to eat, including naturally a KFC (ke she ji), which will have a menu different to what you expect. Around that there are a few Chinese places with good, appropriate menus, and relatively nice places too, not tourist traps.

It said Egypt released the names of 2,000 people who were wanted/denied entry to Egypt under Mubarek. The new list says "All is forgiven, you can return to Egypt and you will be free to come and go and you won't be arrested."
It was reported the name "Khalid Islamboli" the guy that shot Sadat and in Iran they named a street after him. This guy's name and two of his friends were on the list. It was reported that They were living in Iran! He and two others returned to Egypt.
I've been working and not checking things out but I don't think anything has been posted about this.

wiki says Khalid Islamboli was executed.
CAIRO - A celebrated historian recently dropped a bombshell by denying that Khaled el-Islamboli, the prime assassin of late President Anwar el-Sadat, was shot by firing squad. Prof. Gamal Shakra shocked the nation and el-Sadat's family by claiming that el-Islamboli is still alive.[...]

And then check this out:
There has been A lot of talk regarding the release of Abood el Zomor and the Media attention he got. Many people in the egyptian and international so-easy-to-frighten population took it as a sign that the Islamists are taking over and we might have another Iran on our hands. While this might have been the international message the military council intended to send to the international world to ease the pressures on them a bit , this wasn;t supposed to be the message sent for local consumption. The local consumption message was simple: Abood ElZomor was arrested in Sadat’s assassination, the same assassination that resulted in Mubarak’s take over of the presidency, the same assassination that many say Mubarak had a hand in. This coincided with a video circulating the web showing Mubarak throwing chairs on a shot Sadat “to protect him” while Sadat is trying to get up. Even Zomor during his interview regarding the Sadat assassination said that some people involved in the assassination slept in prison, and others in the presidential palace. This was a message to Mubarak: We won’t touch you for now, but don’t think we don’t also have you by the balls. And how Ironic that the Man responsible for the death of one President is becoming the weapon against the President that followed him.

re: #170 Walter L. Newton
I've mentioned it before on LGF, but I jumped out of a moving car (moving about 10 miles an hour through a trailer park) because a wasp was buzzing me... I was driving.
Had to run along side of the car and jump back, brake it, before it ran into a double wide.
Pretty agile I'd say.
A friend, who's since passed, once fell out of a moving car while drunk (he was driving and solo) before dawn one morning but couldn't stumble after it. Don't know how fast he was going. Musta been at a crawl. He watched from a distance while his car plowed into some freeway barricades. He just turned and walked home (less than a mile) and went to bed. About 9am, after showering, police knocked on his door to report finding his car. He said it musta been stolen and that it was his fault for leaving keys in ignition.
Sorry about the wordy comment but your post brought back memories.

I asked my husband but he didn't know any thing about it. I asked him that it was so long ago and how old would the father be. He replied that it said he was in his 80's. It said that their was a cousin living with them. It said the pair were go to Turkey first to get a visa. I guess that means the Iran has given them citizenship? That's all the article said.

I had my husband read me the article but he's watching a basketball game at the same time, so sorry this has taken so long. What I thought was strange the cousin's name was Khalid Islamboli too. He said there is another blog stating the same story but instead of a "father" he was an "uncle." His name was Khalid Islamboli too. I know they like to use the same name alot but that's a little much.

Saw above that someone is visiting China in the near future. Have fun!
Check your vaccinations and recommended vaccinations if you're visiting rural areas, the Great Wall is not considered rural.
Take American cigarettes if you want to completely change the way you haggle for goods at the stalls. Count them as worth $10 USD or 60-70 kuai (RMB/yuan). You can usually haggle down to 1/3 the original asking price for the usual souvenirs, then throw in a pack of cigarettes and blow up the whole deal and start haggling from a different starting point.
If you have time read 'River Town' by Peter Hessler to get a picture of China 15 years ago, he's insightful. He was a Peace Corps volunteer teaching English in a teachers college in Fuling (now underwater from the Three Gorges Dam).
Another read, if you are into historical novels, is 'Empress Orchid' by Anchee Min. Tzu Hsi was the 'Last Empress' of China. Called the 'Dragon Queen' she is much villified in China, even today (bare in mind history is written by the victors and Tzu Hsi, for whatever reason, is blamed for the collapse of Imperial China . . . it was collapsing long before she came on the scene). The novel gives you a sense of what it was like to be living in The Forbidden City and all its' paralyzing protocols.
It would be interesting to hear your opinions about China after you get back. Have Fun!
