Andrew Breitbart Totally Tweaks Out

Lying and spewing insults like a parrot on crack
Wingnuts • Views: 39,689

To kick off the week in grand style, this morning Andrew Breitbart is apoplectic with rage at being exposed:

We have UNMODERATED comments. We delete the racist ones that we are notified of. You could have asked, asshole!

See: Breitbart.com Commenters Respond to Obama Speech with Deluge of Overt Racism.

UPDATE at 9/26/11 10:29:18 am

Let’s examine Andrew Breitbart’s claim that his comments are “UNMODERATED.”

breitbart.com uses a feature-rich, modern commenting system called IntenseDebate. Here are some of the features of this system:

Moderation:
Auto-filter comments by keyword, email and IP addresses.

Blacklisting:
Auto-delete comments by keyword, email and IP addresses, or ban users from posting.

Spam Filters:
Akismet keeps the spam at bay.

Multiple Admins:
Assign additional admins to manage the same blog/website.

So Breitbart certainly does have the tools necessary to get rid of the racist comments that fill nearly every single thread at his sites. There must some other reason why he doesn’t.

Another feature that’s enabled on Breitbart’s sites: IntenseDebate Support — Comment Reporting:

One of your Comment Settings is the option to activate a “Report” button giving your readers the option to report offensive comments and help you keep the comment section clean. This option is located in your Comment Settings page.

Curious, isn’t it, that Breitbart’s readers don’t report those vile racist comments?

As a matter of fact, IntenseDebate also allows rating comments — and the ugliest remarks on Andrew Breitbart’s websites often have the highest positive ratings.

We delete the racist ones that we are notified of.

Of course when you run a site that caters to racists, no one is going to notify you because they don't see anything wrong with the comments.

Translation?:

It's not my fault my audience does not care to notify me of the rampant racism going on in the comment sections of my websites, you doofus!

Again:

One of your Comment Settings is the option to activate a “Report” button giving your readers the option to report offensive comments and help you keep the comment section clean.

This option is activated on Breitbart's websites.

The point was not only were the comments there, but the community at large was perfectly okay with him.

Either basically everyone there is a plant, or his readers don't have a problem with racist comments.

It's funny is that his excuse is that he doesn't really have an audience or following.

Kinda wonder why Breitbart doesn't just ignore Charles. That could very well work for him. His online empire of bigotry would have hardly taken a hit because frankly the truth had been laying out in the open anyway. His aggressiveness in trying to take down "lefties" doesn't really seem to serve him well all the time... It forces him to double down on the derp quite a bit, here.

18 Wozza Matter?  Mon, Sep 26, 2011 10:31:55am

I saw there was a deleted comment on the thread mentioned downstairs earlier.

The rest of the comments were of the opinion that the President is trying to mount an insurrection against "whitey" before the next election through race riots, civil wars, race wars and taxes.

Really unpleasent personally directed rhetoric and then the standard "Imam Barack Huessein Obama"/"He's a actually muslim black liberation christian" traitor sort of stuff.

Even if the overtly racist comments are eventually deleted - and if he wants to be a mainstream pundit they must be - the fact that 90% of his commentators seem clinically deranged is a whole other problem.

That's a very interesting, and if I may say so, very anglo-saxon way of looking at political discourse. The more germanic/continental philosophy is embodied by Brecht, in his book Galileo Galilei. Quoting one of the exchanges (translating on the fly, and from memory):

I don't know, political discourse seems to me to always have been guilty of "regressing to the lowest common denominator" to coin a phrase. There have been short periods where more civility and decorum has ruled, but mostly the history of politics (in any time, anywhere) is a history of dirty aggression, whether naked or cloaked.

Breitbart is just doing the standard trick of shifting the topic to something that can actually be argued about.

Charles, I wouldn't get distracted by the whole moderated/unmoderated sidetrack. Sure, that might play into showing whether or not he condones the comments, but it has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that the comments exist to start with, which was your entire point to start with.

I'm mostly OK with the Israeli stuff. I was angry at one of their attacks on Obama that seemed over the top, and there was a throwaway line that seemed to me to cater to the Balkan war denialists, which got me really unhappy.

I don't know about that. But it strikes me odd that people hold different people to different standards.

I would say that I find it somewhat disappointing, but not all that odd or surprising. Most people in general (Myself included) tend to favor or excuse more when we like someone or agree with what she is saying. It really seems to be human nature. This becomes a problem when it gets in the way of rational thought and action. It really becomes a problem when it results in all semblances of rational though and action to be tossed out the window.

Well, a lot of that will depend on who has standing to challenge it. I mean, it's clearly unconstitutional (If it's not, we're in a whole lot of trouble), but it can only have its day in court if someone can bring a valid lawsuit against it and I have no idea what rules of standing are link in the state and locality for this sort of thing. Your higher-ups need to familiarize themselves with Google:

I just told my boss it was an urban legend. He said 'Do it anyway!'.

He would fall for anything.

Breitbart wants the attention. By attacking Charles, and then attacking Charles for posting his attacks on LGF, he increases his visibility. He's like Sarah Palin on meth...craving more attention and only getting the joneses worse with every mention of his name.

I don't know if that analysis makes sense… but then again, it's Breitbart, so it might be accurate after all. His rabid bs is nonsensical more often than not.

Then you should write up an email forward explaining how doubling vacation time and salaries for employees prevents cancer and heart attacks for higher-ups :)

I have no clue where to find them, and zero interest...except when they get a bunch of free advertisement here at LGF

Pff, the Football gods are pussies.

Perhaps they'll accept a weekly attempt to answer the riddle of steel while pontificating on the merits of BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD.

Football would be infinitely more entertaining if you had Khornate bloodletters on the teams.

comment about Palin from American Thinker....

Sarah Palin is the only public figure who I believe fully understands America's problems, including our enemies abroad and at home, and has the courage to tackle them. But she has been so damaged by the media that I don't think she could get elected. Everybody else pales next to her, but do we have to nominate one of those second-raters in order to get Obama out?

good grief

Uh... wut?

George W. Bush once told a crowd in Nashua, "I know how hard it is for you to put food on your family."

This was fairly clearly a braincrash of 'put food on the table' and 'feed your family'. It's also hilarious.

That was better than his dad vomiting on the Prime Minister of Japan. I imagine he was pretty embarrassed.

re: #95 albusteve

If you came from another planet and hadn't lived in the US from 11/05/2009 forward and heard that Palin is your savior, that's about the only way you could come to that outcome.

Palin is damaged goods and I think that's being charitable. She quit her governorship to take up speaking gigs, she can't handle serious discussions of her background and her politics, and when you can pin her down on specific positions, they turn out to be out of step with much of the nation.

Where she excels is in having charisma and the looks. She comes off as feeling like a common blue collar sort, which is appealing to a significant portion of the electorate, and that's why she's still getting looks from folks who find the current crop of candidates wanting.

But it's also why you've got so much speculation about trying to get someone like Christie to jump into the race (and I hope he doesn't b/c NJ needs him more to finish out his term and to continue with the structural reforms on the budget process). The crop of GOP candidates is weak, which is why those who aren't in the race are seen as viable and crowd-pleasing alternatives.

It's on closer inspection that you understand why and how they're not in the race.

Well, a braincrash is funny.

Being sick on another head of state is just humiliating.

I felt bad about that. For everyone. And Bush Sr. is such a reserved, dignified guy.

tl;dr: The tools are there. But you have to be willing to engage and use them. There is no sensible auto-pilot technical solution to deal with what are essentially social problems.

re: #78 000G

I don't think you can clearly seperate between symptom and underlying problem here. The "symptom" feeds back into the system and makes the illness worse. It's a dynamic relation.

That's why this matters. I am not really a fan of rigid marxist "base versus superstructure" analyses.

What you quoted wasn't one. This matters as far more than an abstract exercise of "hey look! racists in comments sections on the internet!"

Part of the issue both offline and on is that the communities in which the breitbart.com comments thrive do nothing to reign them in. At least to me that's why, for somewhat obvious and probably other non-obvious reasons.

So Breitbart puts in moderators and a bunch of filters, tomorrow morning. Unless it's fought in both offline and online arenas, we'll just see a lot more of it.

And I do think we are going to see much MUCH more of it, for that reason.

A note to any SYSOP (Blog/BBS). Regardless of how many moderators you have, in the end it YOUR RESPONSIBILITY for what the hell is posted on YOUR SITE. It belongs to you and you own its content. Been there done that. Don't want it anymore.
