AZ Gov. Brewer Angrily Lectures President Obama

Disgraceful right wing behavior, par for the course
Wingnuts • Views: 26,348

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer’s book Scorpions for Breakfast is an exemplar of the right wing genre; i.e., incredibly disrespectful of the office of the Presidency. And yesterday, when he arrived in Arizona, President Obama let Brewer know that he wasn’t pleased with it: Jan Brewer: Obama ‘didn’t feel I treated him cordially’.

This AP picture says it all: the classic rude, angry wingnut stance, with bonus pointing finger. (Wingnut bloggers, of course, are cheering Brewer’s disgraceful behavior.)

President Obama, alighting from the stairs of Air Force One in Phoenix this afternoon, was greeted by Arizona Governor Jan Brewer, who handed him an envelope and the two exchanged what appeared to be some heated sentiments. At one point, she pointed her finger at him. …

“I said to him that I have all the respect in the world for the office of the president. The book is what the book is. I asked him if he read the book. He said he read the excerpt,” she said, according to a pool report. “He didn’t feel that I had treated him cordially. I said I was sorry he felt that way but I didn’t get my sentence finished. Anyway, we’re glad he’s here. I’ll regroup.” …

A White House official confirmed the invitation and described the encounter in more bureaucratic terms: “The President said he’d be glad to meet with her again, but did note that after their last meeting, a cordial discussion in the Oval Office, the governor inaccurately described the meeting in her book. The President looks forward to continuing taking steps to help Arizona’s economy grow.” …

The passage in Brewer’s book that the president was apparently referring to recounts a meeting at the White House when they discussed border security and immigration.

“It was [as] though President Obama thought he could lecture me, and I would learn at his knee,” she wrote, according to Capitol Media Services. “He thinks he can humor me and then get rid of me.”

UPDATE at 1/26/12 9:48:55 am

After this incident, Gov. Brewer went on right wing talk radio and called the President “thin-skinned,” then repeated the smear to the national wingnut audience on Fox News.

“He brought up my book. And he was a little tense. I asked him if he read my book, ‘Scorpions for Breakfast’ and he said he read the excerpt and he didn’t think that I was very cordial,” Brewer told radio host Mike Broomhead on KFYI radio. “He was somewhat thin-skinned and a little tense to say the least. I was trying to be very calm.”

“The book is factual, the book is true,” Brewer repeated on Fox’s Greta Van Susteren show. “I don’t know why he was surprised by my book but he evidently is and he’s very thin-skinned in regards to it.”

One of the people in the photo above does look calm, but it’s not Brewer.

UPDATE at 1/26/12 11:32:22 am

Gov. Brewer actually went even farther than this; talking to reporters, she said she “felt a little bit threatened.” Good grief.

Here’s video of the Arizona governor exploiting the right wing red meat potential of her close encounter with a black President to the fullest:

Thanks for saving me the time, I was just getting ready to Page this.

I watched the AP video. They show a long handshake, like they usually do for the press, but before it ended, the camera shot switches to the other side of the limo, and you can only see the tops of their heads. No smoke or flames.

She'll regroup? Did President Obama attack her? No. Did he insult her? No. Did he read her book? No, but he read what she wrote about him and said he didn't think she was being cordial. Her behavior on the tarmac proves he was right.

Also in Brewer's book - numerous rants against Obama ending with the phrase: "Do your job!"

Brewer: Did you read my book?
Obama: Lady, I've got the Seals hunting down OBL and hostage-taking terrorists. I don't have time to read your crappy book.

I would certainly hope Obama isn't using any valuable presidential time reading Brewer's crayon scrawl.

"Respect for the office" trenches pretty close on lèse majesté, not entirely comfortably in a democracy.

I don't have a problem with 'respect for the office.'

It's just respect for the constitutional system that we have, and the fact that individuals in those offices have responsibilities. I respect the fact that they are attempting to fill those responsibilities. Until they aren't. Then we replace them.

As the shrill teacher on Dance Moms says, "Everybody's replaceable."

Also, and I'm sure you know this--we don't have a democracy, we have a republic.

One of the reasons I use Tweetdeck is for its Global Filter feature. You add a Twitter username to the filter, and then you simply never see that person's tweets at all. Stalkers use lots of tricks to try to get you to read their moronic crap, but this shuts them out entirely.

Makes using Twitter much nicer, especially when someone like Andrew Breitbart calls out his goon squad to bury you in insults. I have a keyboard macro that lets me add a username to the Tweetdeck filter with one mouse click and one keypress, so when hundreds of right wing morons start barraging me at Breitbart's command, I just block them all as soon as they post an insult. Takes almost no effort.

re: #23 Romantic Heretic

It's something we should learn in 5th grade civics.

To have a democracy, you have to have the citizens actually making and voting on every law. We would all have to be in DC, voting on every bill. Not practical. Athens had a democracy because only they restricted who was a citizen, and they were geographically small enough to pull it off.

In a republic, we elect representatives to make the laws. Our votes are on the representatives, not the laws. Far more practical in a hurking big nation with hundreds of millions of people.

As for the Birchers, I've never bothered to read any of that, so I can't respond. I'm just a history major who cares about the difference. It's kind of like the difference between constitutional monarchy and absolute monarchy. It is helpful to understand the difference.

And you have to wonder how much of this is deliberate show-boating.

A lot of our cultural raising is about being polite and civil since it is essential for a lot of day-to-day interactions. Especially between equals since over-the-top belligerence gets you into fights when you're young and the sort of feuds and grudges that can prove fatal in a workplace career. And who wants to work for a yelling martinet anyways?

I've seen some people (mainly managers) get away with it for a while, but they were in all cases surviving due to a highly placed patron who had their back. And they were disliked if not outright hated by their co-workers and others who had to deal with them.

Asking for a meeting the first time was a very reasonable request. She asked for a meeting and Obama graciously granted one. So far so good. But then she absolutely can't trash him about the meeting and ever expect another.

So I can imagine her at the airport angrily asking for another meeting and he then *reminds* her of what she said in her book.

Compromise is really strong in social politics due to the spectrum of viewpoints and interests being represented and interplaying. Down into corporate structures you'll see less of it since there are a lot more exclusive OR decisions going on and a half-and-half solution can be very sub-optimal. But you do see negotiations and give and take involving budgets and time lines. But we're also not operating in this situation as a republic. ;)

Based on the video of the encounter I actually don't think the President even thought much of it. He's not animated or upset but appears to maintain a smile. He, being much taller, repeatedly leans over and turns his ear to her so he can hear her over the jet engines. He doesn't walk away from her, as the three person official greeting delegation is standing side by side. After many minutes of conversation he, still smiling, shakes the next persons hand and he continues chatting among them all.

I just get the impression that, after that pool photo was released, her team decided to milk this for all it was worth, so she went to the local press, then right wing radio, then Fox and then even did an night-time press avail on it, blowing the whole thing from a cordial greeting/exchange into the equivalence of some international incident.

This sort of seems to be her M.O. with the President. Her White House meeting turned from something she initially positively described, into the President condescendingly, pretending to honestly engage her, but she could see through him! Their friendly encounter at the shooting memorial became a snubbing in her book. Apparently this is the latest example of the President arrogantly condescending to her (almost through his very existence it seems).

Gingrich Rails Against 'Destructive' Obama, Dual Secular-Islamist Threat

...in the interview with Mefferd, Gingrich once again equated secular Americans with radical Islamists. “We are under attack from two directions: we have secularists who want to eliminate all reference to God in public life, and we have people in the radical Islamic world who want to find a way to impose on us a world that we don’t want to live in,” Gingrich said, “I think both of those are very genuine threats to us”:

Gingrich also told Mefferd that Obama has a “destructive” attitude towards Congress and is “pretty willing to capriciously break things up” because he doesn’t “respect anybody but his own judgment.” Such remarks are especially ironic coming from Gingrich, who is not known for modesty and has a long history of ethics troubles:

Mefferd: Many people think that there has been a flagrant abuse of power in the executive branch under this president, how will you conduct yourself differently if you end up being elected?

Gingrich: Well first of all I am going to try to work with Congress, not just run over it. I think that he has adopted an attitude which is very destructive. So start with that. I was in Congress for twenty years; I respect the Congress as an institution. My sense is that Obama doesn’t actually respect anybody but his own judgment and he doesn’t understand the idea of a larger system that has lasted for 230 years and that has an importance and a power beyond any one fight or beyond any one person and so he is pretty willing to capriciously break things up.

This isn't about "arbiters of reason and virtue." Arbiters of reason and virtue aren't the problem with respect to Obama. Bigotry is not based on our standards but by the standards of the bigots and racists. Regardless of this all Obama is immutably black. He can't hide that fact even if he so desired.

One of the reasons I use Tweetdeck is for its Global Filter feature. You add a Twitter username to the filter, and then you simply never see that person's tweets at all. Stalkers use lots of tricks to try to get you to read their moronic crap, but this shuts them out entirely.

HootSuite does the same thing. As soon as I block someone their tweets disappear, even if they mention me or send a message to me directly.

It's made getting rid of the stalker morans that much easier.

I think this started off by describing the advrse reaction that a lot of elderly Arizona conservatives have to Obama because of his race.

Referring not to the Talmud, which has never been a source of authority on race in the USA, but to the standards of race that were defined under slavery and jim Crow laws (some of which did apply well into the second half of the last century) he is black as the proverbial Ace of Spades...

That or just being a powerful official of the wrong Party, whose DoJ hasn't been afraid to challenge some of her State's laws and officials (ex: Sheriff Joe Arpaio). I suppose it plays to both constituencies, as both want more than anything, to see a President who is of the wrong political affiliation (or, for some, the wrong color), "put in his place".

Many states considered Native Americans blacks for the purpose of identification, including any Indian blood whatsoever. Virginia had to make 1/16 rule because the descendants of Pocahontas* were rich and influential and not about to put up with that silliness.

Not exactly. To be an "Israelite" one has to have a Jewish mother, Tribal affiliation is patrilineal.

So, let's say someone had a Jewish mother and a Roman father (like Brian son of Mandy), he is still considered an "Israelite" but could not claim an inheritance as a member of a specific tribe.

He once surprised Bobby Jindal by whining about a letter Jindal had sent to Tom Vilsack regarding food stamps. Texas turns on Rick Perry

Texans didn’t think much of Rick Perry’s presidential bid either.

Gov. Perry disastrous campaign pulled his job approval down in his home state below even President Obama’s and a plurality of Texans think that his campaign hurt the state’s image, according to a poll by the Dallas Morning News.

Indeed, only 40 percent of Texans approve of Perry’s job performance - his lowest rating in over a decade - and weaker than Obama’s approval rating of 43 percent, according to the survey. An additional 40 percent disapprove of Perry’s job performance.

In addition, while 48 percent of Texans felt that their view of Perry remained unchanged, 37 percent said that they viewed him less favorably after his bid for president.

Now a majority of Texans, 53 percent, think that Perry should not run for another term as governor in 2014, compared to 34 percent who think he should.

re: #37 EmmmieGIt's something we should learn in 5th grade civics.

Hmmm. That seems to me more like 'pure democracy' vs. 'representative democracy.' By your explanation Canada and Britain are republics which they are not.

Shrugs. Not important, really. What's really important is whether the citizens are involved in the process or not. Ours is, unfortunately, increasingly, not.

A Victoria Jackson profile:
[Link: www.miaminewtimes.com...]

Victoria Jackson doesn't want to meet at her house. "The Nation of Islam wants to kill me," she explains apologetically in her inimitable shrill voice. Instead, she picks up a reporter at a Miami-area strip mall. Her weathered Honda Civic is adorned with "Nobama," Marco Rubio, and Tea Party bumper stickers, and inside, it smells like it's been fumigated with sweet incense.

...

The daffy actress — about whom the Washington Post once mused, "If you opened her head, it would be filled with cotton candy" — is now a bizarrely riveting semiregular political pundit on Fox News.

She's no Keyboard Cat. But videos uploaded of her — on cable news programs, on her online talk show, or filmed by her own erratic hand — have in just the past few months amassed more than a million page views. She has strummed a ukulele while harmonizing that Muslims "like beheadings and pedophile weddings." Even Bill O'Reilly laughed at her when she compared Barack Obama to "Castro in Cuba, or the guy in China, or Saddam Hussein." She has declared, in protest of a gay kiss on Glee, that homosexual children need to "pray the gay away" and that there's a "spiritual war in America."

But calling her the lunatic fringe is at most half right. Victoria has been invited to the office of Republican Florida congressman Bill Posey, who commiserated when she said Obama has "the fakest birth certificate I've ever seen in my life." She has gained a sympathetic audience with nearly every GOP candidate of the 2012 presidential campaign (excluding the guy she calls a "fake conservative," Mitt Romney). She rode the Tea Party Express bus with Herman Cain and joined Michele Bachmann at a D.C. rally where the crowd chanted, "There's a communist living in the White House!"

I assume that not a demand that Iran stop its nuclear program, probably a demand the Israel disarm.

Personally, I would rather that Israel dump her nukes and arrange to be under our strategic nuclear umbrella like Japan et al.

Every other county in the region has a ready made excuse to make their nukes because Israel flouts the UN resolutions on non proliferation, and we all pretend to ignore it...and then they sell that back to their own populations as evidence of Zionist conspiracies in the UN and the US blah blah blah. AS long as Israel has her 200 to 300 nukes, we will not have an actual reason to tell anybody else not to have them except for "Because we said so". They are not buying it.

My version of an agreement with Israel would entail dismantlement of her program and weapons delivery systems, in exchange that she come under our protection and if necessary, allow basing our own weapons on her territory(like we used to do in Turkey, Canada etc). We could use that to bring Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and possibly others into a loose mutual defense agreement where an NBC attack on any of them would entail a full retaliatory response from us. I would also agree with Israel some terms regarding any invasion of her territory (pretty unlikely at this point) that would bring a tactical nuclear response.

I also know that will never happen, but that would be my own take on how to deal with it.

Obama was openly advocating raising taxes on top earners for about 2 years (maybe longer) before OWS even started. White female governor feels "threatened" by tall, uppity black POTUS. News at 11.

Brewer is just trying to rationalize her irrational, disrespectful behavior to save face. Her core supporters will no doubt be aroused by her stunt, but the vast majority of her constituents are most likely ashamed of their governor right now.

226 Ming  Thu, Jan 26, 2012 8:53:06pm

Saying you have "respect for the office", when the person who holds the office is standing right there, is a clear insult to the person.

That picture, of Jan Brewer pointing her finger at President Obama, is THE DISTILLED ESSENCE of the right-wing id. An angry white woman berates a President of mixed race. A book written about the craziness of the right-wing during these years could easily have that picture on its cover. It's really a classic.

I regret that the picture was taken in Arizona, where I'm typing this comment right now. This is a beautiful state, with many wonderful people. As Alaska proved, even the most beautiful states can have an embarrassment for a governor.

Obama has taken this abuse, day after day, while working hard to rescue the economy, and to move America forward. You can't do that without real love for America. The man is an inspiration.
