The current political climate looks more like a zombie apocalypse all the time. 15 jaunte  Fri, Mar 2, 2012 8:16:41pm

Cain:

"Why doesn’t economic stimulus work? When it comes in the form of federal spending, it doesn’t work because it’s based on a completely wrong notion of what spurs prosperity. In that respect, it’s much like a drug.
Consider the effects that a stimulant like caffeine has on your body, or even a stronger stimulant like amphetamines. These stimulants merely provide a very temporary boost to your energy – keeping you awake when you should probably be sleeping, or keeping you operating at a high level when you need rest. They make the body act in an unnatural way, and that doesn’t come without consequences."

Rush really is a disgusting pig

Transcript

And thus, a new welfare entitlement must be created so that society will pay for it. You know, somebody asked me, "Why are you so insulting?" Me? Can anybody understand that a whole lot of us are insulted by this? Here we are, we're minding our business one day. We're bothering nobody. We can't anyway! We can't inspect your kids' lunch box. We can't raise your taxes. We can't send your kids off to war. We can't make you buy a certain kind of car. We can't do anything. And all of a sudden we're told that people who want to have sex without consequence, sex with no responsibility, and we have pay for it! We're told we have to pay for it -- and if we object, that somehow we're Neanderthal. Just out of nowhere this comes up.

Now, that, to me, is insulting.

It's no different than if somebody that I don't know knocked on my door and said, "You know what? I'm outta money. I can't afford birth control pills and I'm supposed to have sex with three guys tonight."

"Well, why are you coming to me?"

"Well, because you've got the money."

"Well, have you ever thought maybe you shouldn't? If you can't afford it, you can't do it."

Where is it written that all of a sudden, if you want something and don't have the money for it, somebody else has to pay for it. I think the whole notion of being insulted here is misplaced. There are a lot of us insulted by this whole idea that is growing throughout the Obama administration, that the people who make this country work are somehow not doing their fair share. Not paying their fair share. We've gotta be punished even more. And here's the latest example of it. So the President has called her and asked her if she's all right. She said she was, I hope. Do we know what she said? (interruption) Oh, she told that to Andrea Mitchell? You know, I offered to pay for aspirins. I thought I'd been quite compassionate here.

If they really sought to prevent damage, I wouldn't be so hostile. But the rhetoric and behavior of too many on the environmentalist left leads me to conclude they actually just hate electricity generation.

Don't ask me for examples, they aren't forthcoming. I've drawn my conclusion and I'm sticking to it.

Yep. I also know it noy would happen if the plant that the tsunami hit was one of the modern designs about to be approved.

Other nuclear plants in Japan are now being closed down. Japan is in a state of crisis.

The perfection of nuclear energy looks good on paper, but in reality is has proven to have very long disastrous consequences, mostly because the long term costs were way underestimated.

The biggest "crisis" in nuclear power generation is people's overreaction to it.

The lesson I learned from the Japanese earthquake and Fukushima is that if there's an earthquake, it's much safer to live near a nuclear power plant than it is to live near the beach.

Fear alternative

By Michael Galazin, Broken Arrow
Published: 3/2/2012  2:27 AM
Last Modified: 3/2/2012  3:45 AM

Did all organisms evolve over time from a common ancestor, a single-celled organism? Charles Darwin said that his hypothesis of evolution would be proved or disproved by the fossil record.

Instead of housing an orderly progression of organisms in successive layers, the fossil record reveals a sudden, simultaneous explosion of life forms. Simple fungi, arthropods, dinosaurs and humans (yes, humans!) show up together in the same rock stratum in Glen Rose, Texas. [No, this is just wrong, and the footprints are a hoax.]

Meanwhile, significant transitional-life-form fossils remain undiscovered. It only takes one observation of fact to disprove a hypothesis, no matter how beloved that hypothesis might be.

Darwin's hypothesis is disproven. Flora and fauna did not evolve gradually over millions of years. Yet the intelligentsia and the local newspaper editors howl about any attempts to teach this fact to schoolchildren. Why? Because they fear the alternative?

This is America.

Chernobyl was quite a different beast, and genuinely the only true nuclear DISASTER we've ever really had. I don't downplay the dangers of nuclear power; one has to be careful with the beast. But, the payoff vs. risk (especially regarding modern reactors) is well worth it compared to other energy sources, in my opinion.

I don't think MEMRI has to look very hard to come up with the majority of their videos. I don't think it's "cherrypicking" when the views expressed are the majority view in the ME. I've always suggested people take a variation of gods challenge to Lot. Take the opportunity to travel to Saudi and see for themselves what the average saud believes and see if they can find 50 people who don't blame the jews for the majority of the worlds problems. Although I disagree, I think there is an honest argument to be made that waterboarding is torture. I also think there is a decent argument to be made that some of the tactics used in the interrogations might not be the best methods available but to call stress positions, loud music, sleep deprivation, and turning up the AC "torture" is a major stretch.

We called it torture when the Vietnamese did it to John McCain.

Because they don't put random stuff on their site. Their clips always have a specifc political point to make, which relates to some people's views on Israel, US, Jews, democracy, etc. (Mostly controversial.)

Therefore, the clip about Assad must also be there to make some point or another in that vein. I asked what that point could be.

I really don't see what is not clear about this.

I'm trying to figure out where we're in disagreement and the only thing I can find is..."because they don't put random stuff on their site" which sounds to me like an argument that they cherrypick.

What point do you think they're trying to make re: Assad? You're the one making the implication that there has to be an ulterior motive on their part but I'm not seeing where the controversy is in that video.

Also, "don't put random stuff on their site" and "cherrypick" are related but not synonymous. One can agree with the former while disagreeing with the latter.

I really don't see how you can disagree with the former though, unless you're saying that they do just put random stuff from Arabic channels on their site, not united by an overarching theme.

re: #182 sagehen

McCain wasn't waterboarded and was left permanently disabled by his treatment. The 3 people we waterboarded were left completely healthy. When KSM gets the DP for his crimes are we going to call that torture too?

Lastly, I'll point out that waterboarding still hasn't been officially made illegal. They put a stop to it with an executive order that limits interrogations to the Army FM but contains a loophole big enough to pass a water buffalo through..."unless the Attorney General with appropriate consultation provides further guidance." In other words, "we'll never do it again.....unless it's realllly needed."

You're correct, you did and I missed it. I think you might be reading between the lines to much. 201 Lord Baron Viscount Duke Earl Count Planckton  Sat, Mar 3, 2012 6:04:29am

As for MEMRI's cherrypicking - which is a separate topic from their Assad clip - first of all, it is called "Middle East Media Research Institute", yet it doesn't provide clips and articles from Israeli media - as if Israel wasn't in the Middle East. This alone shows that yes, it is cherrypicking. Just by definition. Second, one would expect an org called Middle East Media Research Institute to give an objective look at ME media. I'm not saying that the clips they post are not bad. Some of them are good to know. But a constant barrage of hateful clips taken from any and all sources, that give the impression that this is the entirety of the Arabic/Islamic media, is not what one would expect from a real research institute. Where's any sort of analysis, as in, what percentage do hateful messages constitute in ME media, what percentage is given to neutral stuff, what percentage to positive stuff, etc. - well, the usual research. That's not what happens here. What happens is cherrypicking.

Again, not saying some of this stuff is not good to know. Just let's call it what it is.

Which is true.

and then you suggested the point could be they want Assad to remain alive and in power without supplying anything to back that assertion.

Twisting of my words. Not an assertion, but suspicion. I also explained why: "after what happened in Egypt, Libya etc.". A lot of people think that it would be better if "Israel-neutral" (so to say) dictatorial regimes stayed in place, because the void was filled by anti-Israel Islamists. Which is not far from truth either.

So wondering if MEMRI has a tongue in cheek by presenting an Egyptian Islamist calling for the killing of Assad is not only not out of bounds, it's natural.

However, there is only a preciously little number of ways to get an authoritarian leader to leave when (s)he doesn't want to and instead goes for the 3rd term, 4th term and so on until death.

And most of them are worse than such a leader dying naturally. Revolution? Blood. Assassination? Sorry, not a fan of such methods.

Just got here. Just saw this.

All I can say is WTF?

What possible reason is there to hate electricity generation beyond the environmental damage it causes? Is there really a belief environmentalists want to go back to horse and buggy because they love shovelling horse shit?

My favorite: #6. Gadrii Nombor Shulen Jongu (Tibetan)

Means:

Giving an answer that is unrelated to the question.

"Gadrii nombor shulen jongu" translates literally to "giving a green answer to a blue question," and you won't find a gushier spring of it than in political debates. It sounds like this:

Moderator: How do you respond to allegations that you funneled federal grant money into your string of underground toddler fighting arenas?

Three Occupy Oaklanders charged with hate crimes, robbery

Three Occupy Oakland protesters accused of surrounding and taunting a woman before stealing her wallet were charged on Friday with robbery and hate crimes, authorities said.
Michael Davis, 32, Nneka Crawford, 23, and Randolph Wilkins, 24, confronted the woman on the streets of Oakland in February after she told them not to riot, the Oakland Police said in a written release.
According to a report by NBC Bay Area, police said the woman was crossing the street from a Wells Fargo bank when she noticed a group of Occupy protesters calling for a riot. She allegedly told them not to riot in her neighborhood and was then surrounded.
"She was surrounded by three protesters and battered as they yelled vulgar epithets regarding their perception of her sexual orientation," Oakland Police spokeswoman Johnna Watson said.
...
"Her wallet was taken during the crime," Watson said. "The victim broke away from the group and called police, who were able to arrest one suspect near the scene."

Good News: Ahmadinejad not doing well in election results
Bad News: His replacements are worse
Ahmadinejad faces political blows as rival hard-liners surge in parliament count

Conservative rivals of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad appeared on course Saturday to gain firm control of parliament after elections that could embolden Iran's nuclear defiance and give the ruling clerics a clear path to ensure a loyalist succeeds Ahmadinejad next year.
...
The apparent setbacks for Ahmadinejad's backers, according to early results, could signal a decisive blow in the internal political conflicts and give hard-liners an even stronger voice in Iran's showdowns over its nuclear program.

The results also greatly reduce Ahmadinejad's leverage to have a protege clear the ruling clerics' election vetting process and become a candidate to succeed him in mid-2013. It now seems likely that only staunch Khamenei loyalists could be in the running.

"It appears that the era of 'Ahmadinejadism' in Iran's political history is gradually coming to an end," said prominent Tehran-based political analyst Davoud Hermidas Bavand.

If the clerics are really in charge than it lets them put up and remove figureheads as necessary in order to manipulate the populace and foreign policy. Need to loosen up for a few years to lessen dissent - bring in a "reformer". Need to crack down a bit afterwards, remove the "reformer" for corruption and bring in someone else. Same applies for pedaling hard-line or soft-line to the other ME countries, China, US, etc.

Perhaps there's a sliver of hope after all, as long as enough people wake up before it's too late. Check this out, from someone else who lives in Oklahoma:

What Many Do not Understand About Climate Change

You see it everywhere. Back to the land, have a garden. Why if things go really bad, we can live off the fat of the land. And you know that was true 100 year ago, but not any more.

Not with our new extreme weather patterns.

But Climate Change Deniers haven't made the connection yet.
...
But the real killer of crops and gardens wasn't just the high day time heat. What made this heatwave unusual is that the temperature at night didn't fall below 99 degrees. Even when it is in the mid 80s, nights like that feel hot. But in the high 90s--it was positively stifling for us, deadly for plants and animals. There was no time to recover. Even a desert gets cooler at night.

Zandar is cherry picking here because those two paragraphs are not representative of what Frum wrote. Especially the closing paragraphs:

And this is where it becomes difficult to honor the Roman injunction to speak no ill of the dead. It’s difficult for me to assess Breitbart’s impact upon American media and American politics as anything other than poisonous. When one of the leading media figures of the day achieves his success by his giddy disdain for truth and fairness—when one of our leading political figures offers to his admirers a politics inflamed by rage and devoid of ideas—how to withhold a profoundly negative judgment on his life and career?

Especially when that career was so representative of his times?

We live in a time of political and media demagoguery unparalleled since the 19th century. Many of our most important public figures have gained their influence and power by inciting and exploiting the ugliest of passions—by manipulating fears and prejudices—by serving up falsehoods as reported truth. In time these figures will one by one die. What are we to say of this cohort, this group, this generation? That their mothers loved them? That their families are bereaved? That their fans admired them and their employees treated generously by them? Public figures are inescapably judged by their public actions. When those public actions are poisonous, the obituary cannot be pleasant reading.

And this from Zandar:

Frum of course will never figure out that the only thing worse than a bigoted, racist jackass of a liar is the person who excuses that kind of behavior and enables it to happen. And in that very real way, David Frum is a much worse problem with our ass-over-teakettle media than Andrew Breitbart ever, ever will have been.

Fear the David Frum! Someone needs some decaf.

Based on all of your friendly feedback, I've had to rethink my views on various aspects of factors affecting the climate, especially CO2 buildup. So your opinions and providing facts have been effective.

364 Interesting Times  Sat, Mar 3, 2012 10:25:39am

The most amusing thing about deniers is how they cherry-pick from legitimate sources to supposedly prove their point, completely ignoring how those same sources accept the science of human-caused climate change. For example, the brain-dead troll posted tornado data from NOAA that conveniently ended at 2010. Gee, I wonder why?

State of the Climate Tornadoes Annual 2011

The U.S. spring and summer of 2011 will likely be remembered as one of the most destructive and deadly tornado seasons to ever impact the nation. During the time period, there were seven individual tornado and severe weather outbreaks with damages exceeding one billion U.S. dollars, and total damage from the outbreaks exceeding 28 billion U.S. dollars. This represents the most property damage from severe weather in a single year since record keeping began in 1980.

Limbaugh Attacks Help Put Chevy Volt Workers Out Of A Job

I would not over rate the ability of rush at actually affect buying decisions more than simple facts like the Volt does not hold up to a comparison with the Prius. ThinkProgress may have had a hair trigger on this one. At work we are buying a new vehicle for deliveries and such. The volt is not quite there yet market wise.

Conclusion Volt vs Prius
So after 5 years you would have spent $45,555.50 to drive a Chevy Volt. This includes the fact that you got $7500 back from the government in the form of a Tax Credit. While with the Prius you would have spent $33,945.63. This doesn't take into account the cost of tires, oil changes, or brake pads, and general maintenance. We assume they will be about equal between the two cars. Also with the Prius I was using the base model. If you added some of the fancy accessories this could add another $5,000 to $6,000 to the price.

Climate is definitely changing and has been for some time. Humans have greatly added to CO2 content in atmosphere over the past fifty years, and significantly polluted the environment. Question really is how much of a factor CO2 buildup will play toward reaching some tipping point in global climate change. And what other factors need to be better understood to forecast future climate. No one has a definitive answer right now. I certainly do not.

OK, what or where or who has is the definitive "answer" on global change/warming. Anything recent that summarizes most current findings? IPCC info is dated.

Hi, Interesting. Thanks for the latest on the January report, which is definitely interesting, but note the number of severe E-5 category tornadoes equaled the number in 1974. My link was to provide latest available big picture - the long term annual trend of "severe" tornadoes.

Should also highlight the following from the same website we used - the page providing info on The Enhanced Fujita Scale now in use to track tornadoes:
The United States today averages 1200 tornadoes a year. The number of tornadoes increased dramatically in the 1990s as the modernized National Weather Service installed the Doppler Radar network. The National Weather Service modernization also began the Warning Coordination Meteorologist program increasing partnerships with media and Emergency Management across the United States. This program also initiated the training of storm spotters across the County Warning Area of each Weather Forecast Office. With more people trained to relay information on storm activity to the Weather Forecast Office and improved communication and digital technology, more tornadoes could be reported.

Hokay...I'm back (whew, uh uh ..out of breath). Reviewed the AR4 again (soooo 2007, errors notwithstanding) as well as various recent (2010 reports) and comments in articles and comments in RealClimate. Certainly seems to be considerable differences of opinions as to what factors affect our climate to varying degrees, even among the pro-AGW crowd. Even the recent IPCC reports are hedged with "it is very likely", "there is low confidence" (or "medium confidence"), "there is limited to medium evidence available".... conclusions tend to we need to keep studying and monitoring the various climate change issues involved.

My conclusion - we don't have all the answers yet, and anyone who says we do is wrong. Shouldn't stop us from planning on how best to adjust to climate change, be it increasing temps (good or bad?), sea level change (minimal or major), ocean acidity (can't be good), ocean dead zones (bad), etc.

380 Coracle  Sat, Mar 3, 2012 1:17:38pm

Look guys, I think Brainsurfer has trolled us on climate before, but most of the things he's said in this thread are either neutral or indicate he's actually starting to pay attention to the data. If he's actually letting his brain do the work, and reading up on the facts, then the battle is more than half won, and I ask you to cut him a bit of slack if he asks what look like honest, difficult questions.

Sure, it could be a snowjob. It could be a setup for more trolling, but we get nowhere assuming that someone is completely unreachable.

I agree, with caveats. We have to learn how to deal with the damage already done and with what is inevitably coming. But we also have to put breaks on the train. It's not going to stop on a dime, and it's going to take a _lot_ of effort to reverse it.

re: #379 BrainSurfer

My conclusion - we don't have all the answers yet, and anyone who says we do is wrong.

Sure, and nobody said otherwise, to my knowledge.

The consensus among the climate experts about 1) the current GW, 2) largely anthropogenic causes of the current GW is in, however. This is separate from "what should be done", etc.

Like in any discipline, the details will always be shuffled around.

What various rabble-rouser non-experts like Watts et al. do, however, is not mere disagreement over details. It's a political campaign to undermine mainstream climate science. I don't know why anybody would listen to them, rather than the experts.
